Select details of their life and work, from their refined designs to their innovative experiments, and even including images depicting the everyday poetic moments of their lives, and are shared here in this exhibit within a book. Inspired by Charles's immersive and original slideshows, in which he expertly selected and grouped images together that communicated information in an aesthetic, direct, and accessible way, this book strives to visually create the Eameses' life and work by taking the viewer through a delightful journey, focusing on their ""beautiful details."" The packaging design of the "Eames: Beautiful Details" slipcase is a pattern inspired by the triangles and colors of one of their most inventive, if lesser known, designs for children, simply called, ""the toy."" It also pays homage to the patterns they used on their well loved House of Cards. The Eameses brought a sense of humor and joy to everything they created, and the design and layout of the book aims to convey that spirit in a visual feast for the eyes. It is a testament to the Eameses and the lasting value of good design that their Eames lounge chair, created in 1956, endures today as perhaps the most recognizable and coveted piece of mid century furniture design. Their experiments in technological innovations, like molded plywood and fiberglass, resulted in such classic pieces as the bent plywood LCW and DCM Chairs, the Molded Plastic Chairs, and the Aluminum Group; all of which are still in production by Herman Miller. Likewise, Charles and Ray designed and built their own home in 1949 in Pacific Palisades, and it is still revered as a landmark of modern architecture. Built as part of the Case Study program in California, sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine, it was one of the earliest experiments in pre fab construction, using off the shelf industrial parts. But unlike the austerity of much of modern architectural design, their factory like shell was lovingly lived in along with their personal collections of folk art, treasures from their travels, and everyday objects refreshingly displayed with affection and without pretense. In exhibition design as well, ""Mathematica: A World of Numbers ... and Beyond, 1961,"" for IBM is considered groundbreaking as an interactive, educational, and experiential way to communicate the wonder and magic of math. Similarly, their seminal film, Powers of Ten, 1977, expresses the mathematical concept of multiplying to the tenth power, in a very direct, simple, and powerful way. Unlike any other book previously published on Charles and Ray Eames, this unique monograph is a visual celebration of their work and life, and was created in true collaboration with Charles's grandson, Eames Demetrios, and other members of the Eames family.

Author: Eames Demetrios,Charles Eames,Ray Eames
Publisher: Ammo Books
Published: 11/01/2014
Pages: 408
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 6.35lbs
Size: 12.30h x 9.10w x 1.90d
ISBN: 9781623260316

About the Author
Demetrios, Eames: - Renowned designers Charles and Ray Eames are among the greatest designers of the 20th century. Yet the weaving classes taught by Anni Albers, Trude Guermonprez, and six other faculty members are rarely mentioned or are often treated as mere craft lessons. This was far from the case: the weaving program was the school's most sophisticated and successful design program. About ten percent of all Black Mountain College students took at least one class in weaving, including specialists like textile designers Lore Kadden Lindenfeld and Else Regensteiner, as well as students from other disciplines, like artists Ray Johnson and Robert Rauschenberg and architects Don Page and Claude Stoller. Drawing upon a wealth of unpublished material and archival photographs, Weaving at Black Mountain College rewrites history to show how weaving played a much larger role in the legendary art and design curriculum than previously assumed.

The book illustrates dozens of objects from private and public collections, many of which have never been shown in this context. Essays explore connections and networks fostered by Black Mountain weavers; the ways in which weaving at the college was linked to larger discourses about weaving and craft; and Bauhaus influences transmitted by way of Anni Albers. The book also includes works by five contemporary artists that connect and respond to the legacy of weaving at Black Mountain College today.

Distributed for the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center

Exhibition Schedule

Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, Asheville, NC
(September 29, 2023-January 6, 2024)

Author: Michael Beggs,Julie J. Prized for its delicate quality and whiteness, porcelain was first imported to Europe from China in the early modern period and gained lasting associations with Chinoiserie, a style that encapsulated associations of mystery and enchantment with Asia. This book probes the collective anxieties around gender, race, and sexuality lurking under the surface of this ornate style, derided by some eighteenth-century critics as monstrous and unnatural. In interconnected essays, Iris Moon unpacks Chinoiserie's language of curiosity and exoticism. Here, close looking at garnitures, plates, teacups and saucers reveals how the desire to collect and possess porcelain created entrenched cultural myths of the Asian woman, and how it later extended into such mediums as photography and film. In addition, sixteen readings by contemporary artists and scholars, of works ranging from the sixteenth century to the present, respond to this fraught history by asking how we can engage in meaningful dialogues about Chinoiserie today.

Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art/Distributed by Yale University Press

Exhibition Schedule:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
(March 25-August 17, 2025)

Author: Iris Moon
Publisher: Metropolitan Museum of Art New York
Published: 04/29/2025
Pages: 256
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 2.00lbs
Size: 10.50h x 7.30w x 0.80d
ISBN: 9781588397928

About the Author
Iris Moon is associate curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_4c441e91-f66c-48b8-896a-de200bac2133.jpg?v=1761654178
the-complete-a-z-of-embroidery-stitches-the-definitive-guide-to-288-stitches-9781800923232
The Complete A-Z of Embroidery Stitches: The Definitive Guide to 288 Stitches
The must-have stitch dictionary for every embroiderer.

Over 280 essential embroidery stitches curated from the best-selling A-Z of Embroidery Stitches books, from the expert team at Inspirations Studios.

Learn to work over 280 embroidery stitches, for the beginner through to the advanced embroider, with this comprehensive step-by-step stitch dictionary.

The book includes:

Advice on choosing fabrics, threads, equipment, and working as a left-handed embroiderer.

2000+ step-by-step photographs and detailed instructions.

Detailed stitch index for easy navigation.

Dozens of hints throughout providing tips and historical insights.

Lay-flat binding, for easy reference while you work.

Whether you're a confident embroiderer looking for new inspiration, or a beginner who's keen to expand your repertoire, this book opens a world of creative stitching possibilities, now and for years to come.

Author: Inspirations Studio
Publisher: Search Press
Published: 06/17/2025
Pages: 304
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 2.35lbs
Size: 10.50h x 8.50w x 0.90d
ISBN: 9781800923232

About the Author
Compiled by the expert team at Inspirations, renowned Australian publishers of embroidery books and magazines, part of Inspirations Studios. Inspirations Magazine and the All Stitched Up newsletter are two of the most popular guides to embroidery for traditional and modern embroidery around the world.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_a6213783-04d4-4745-904f-1e01fd2432d7.jpg?v=1761658098
the-va-sourcebook-of-pattern-ornament-9780500298404
The V&a Sourcebook of Pattern & Ornament

This richly illustrated, easy-to-navigate sourcebook presents more than one thousand historic and contemporary examples of pattern and ornamentation from around the world, each one succinctly identified and explained. Its inspiration came from pioneering British architect and designer Owen Jones (1809-1874), who produced a comprehensive design treatise for the machine age, lavishly illustrated in vivid chromolithographic color. Jones made detailed observations of decorative arts on his travels in Europe, the Middle East, and in his native London, where he studied objects on display at the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations in 1851 and at local museums. His aim was to improve the quality of Western design by changing the habits of Victorian designers, who indiscriminately mixed elements from a wide variety of sources.

Jones's resulting study is a comprehensive analysis of styles of ornamental design, presenting key examples ranging from Maori tattoos, Egyptian columns, and Greek borders to Byzantine mosaic, Indian embroidery, and Elizabethan carvings.
