First, let me say that I do not contend
that the Dark Lady was Mary Fitton, because when the case in Mary's favor
(or against her, if you please to consider that the Dark Lady was no
better than she ought to have been) was complete, a portrait of Mary came
to light and turned out to be that of a fair lady, not of a dark one. That
settles the question, if the portrait is authentic, which I see no reason
to doubt, and the lady's hair undyed, which is perhaps less certain.
Shakespear rubbed in the lady's complexion in his sonnets mercilessly; for
in his day black hair was as unpopular as red hair was in the early days
of Queen Victoria. Any tinge lighter than raven black must be held fatal
to the strongest claim to be the Dark Lady. And so, unless it can be shewn
that Shakespear's sonnets exasperated Mary Fitton into dyeing her hair and
getting painted in false colors, I must give up all pretence that my play
is historical. The later suggestion of Mr Acheson that the Dark Lady, far
from being a maid of honor, kept a tavern in Oxford and was the mother of
Davenant the poet, is the one I should have adopted had I wished to be up
to date. Why, then, did I introduce the Dark Lady as Mistress Fitton?

Well, I had two reasons. The play was not to have been written by me at
all, but by Mrs Alfred Lyttelton; and it was she who suggested a scene of
jealousy between Queen Elizabeth and the Dark Lady at the expense of the
unfortunate Bard. Now this, if the Dark Lady was a maid of honor, was
quite easy. If she were a tavern landlady, it would have strained all
probability. So I stuck to Mary Fitton. But I had another and more
personal reason. I was, in a manner, present at the birth of the Fitton
theory. Its parent and I had become acquainted; and he used to consult me
on obscure passages in the sonnets, on which, as far as I can remember, I
never succeeded in throwing the faintest light, at a time when nobody else
thought my opinion, on that or any other subject, of the slightest
importance. I thought it would be friendly to immortalize him, as the
silly literary saying is, much as Shakespear immortalized Mr W. H., as he
said he would, simply by writing about him.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1050
Author: Shaw, Bernard
Release Date: Sep 1, 1997
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1050_1e3ff9ae-56fd-4812-b366-7b079b7c46eb.jpg?v=1671250004
a-yorkshire-tragedy-gb-4255
A Yorkshire Tragedy

A Yorkshire Tragedy

This header should be the first thing seen when anyone starts to
view the etext. As botany deals inductively
with the phenomena of vegetable life and traces the laws underlying
them, as economy reviews and systematises on inductive principles the
facts of commerce, so there is a criticism not less inductive in
character which has for its subject-matter literature.
The presumption is clearly that literary criticism should follow other
branches of thought in becoming inductive. Ultimately, science means no
more than organised thought; and amongst the methods of organisation
induction is the most practical. To begin with the observation of facts;
to advance from this through the arrangement of observed facts; to use
priori ideas, instinctive notions of the fitness of things, insight into
far probabilities, only as side-lights for suggesting convenient
arrangements, the value of which is tested only by the actual
convenience in arranging they afford; to be content with the sure
results so obtained as 'theory' in the interval of waiting for still
surer results based on a yet wider accumulation of facts: this is a
regimen for healthy science so widely established in different tracts of
thought as almost to rise to that universal acceptance which we call
common sense. Indeed the whole progress of science consists in winning
fresh fields of thought to the inductive methods.

2
Yet the great mass of literary criticism at the present
moment is of a nature widely removed from induction. The
prevailing notions of criticism are dominated by the idea of
assaying, as if its function were to test the soundness and
estimate the comparative value of literary work. Lord
Macaulay, than whom no one has a better right to be heard
on this subject, compares his office of reviewer to that of a
king-at-arms, versed in the laws of literary precedence, marshalling
authors to the exact seats to which they are entitled.
And, as a matter of fact, the bulk of literary criticism,
whether in popular conversation or in discussions by professed
critics, occupies itself with the merits of authors and
works; founding its estimates and arguments on canons of
taste, which are either assumed as having met with general
acceptance, or deduced from speculations as to fundamental
conceptions of literary beauty.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 43435
Author: Moulton, Richard G. Shakespeare, as it would appear, was utterly regardless
of literary fame; he had, as we have seen, one
sole object in view, to acquire as much money as would
enable him to quit the hurry and bustle of London, and
settle down in his native Stratford-on-Avon as a man
of independent property, and be, if possible, the founder
of a family. Pouring forth, therefore, his tragic and
comic strains, with as little apparent effort as the songsters
of the grove warble their native notes, he set no
value on them but as they filled the Globe and the
Blackfriars and thus tended to the realization of the
great object of all his ambition; and he never gave a
single one of them to the press, as was done by Jonson
and others who sought for literary fame by their dramas.
Hence, though the verse is always melodious, we must
not look in them for the finish and perfection which we
find in those of a Racine or a Molire; we must, on the
contrary, be prepared to meet with all the marks of
haste and carelessness, with contradictions and even with
absurdities. It would really dismay one to think of
their being submitted to the ordeal through which the
pieces of the great Corneille have been made to pass by
Voltaire. Corneille, by the way, like Shakespeare, valued
his plays by the money they produced.
Copies of about one-half of his plays were surreptitiously
obtained by the booksellers, who printed them
with more or less of care; but of this he took no heed:
and when he finally retired to Stratford, he left in the
hands of his fellowplayers the manuscripts of his plays,46
published and unpublished. There is not the slightest
ground for supposing that he ever had any intention of
collecting and publishing his dramatic writingsa thing
of which there had as yet been no instance. In 1616,
the very year of Shakespeare's death, Ben Jonson, who,
widely different from the great dramatist, set a high
value, and a just one, on his plays as literary compositions,
collected all he had written up to that date and
published them, with his other poetical pieces, in a folio
volume. It may have been this that induced Heminge
and Condell, two members of the company to which
Shakespeare had belonged, to make a collection of his
pieces also, and give them to the world in a folio volume.
For this purpose they used the 4to impressions of such
plays as had been printed, making some corrections and
alterations in them from the playhouse copies; and
adding to these the manuscript plays which were in the
possession of the theatre, they put the whole into the
hands of the publishers, one of whom, Edward Blount,
who was a man of some literary pretensions, is supposed,
not without probability, to have undertaken the
task of seeing the work through the press. Such was
the origin of the celebrated folio of 1623, of which it
was, in my opinion most justly, said by the late Mr.
Hunter, that "perhaps in the whole annals of English
typography there is no record of any book of any extent
and any reputation having been dismissed from the
press with less care and attention;" while Mr. Knight
(who ought to have known a good deal about such
matters) boldly declares that "perhaps, all things considered,
there never was a book so correctly printed!"
Such as it is, however, it and the previous 4to impressions
are the only authority we have for the text of these
marvellous creations of the human intellect.
Few, I should hope, will refuse to assent to the two
following postulates.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 45160
Author: Keightley, Thomas
Release Date: Mar 17, 2014
Format: eBook
Language: English

Will Shakespeare: An Invention in Four Acts

The curtain rises on the living
room of a sixteenth century cottage. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children--an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare's only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare's working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. London was alive with an interest in all things Scottish, and Shakespeare turned to Scottish history for material. He found a spectacle of violence and stories of traitors advised by witches and wizards, echoing James's belief in a connection between treason and witchcraft.

In depicting a man who murders to become king, Macbeth teases us with huge questions. Drawing on both critical and theatrical history, he shows how this fusion makes Hamlet seem a much more 'problematic' play than it was when it originally appeared in the First Folio of 1623.

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

Barbara A. The Countess Olivia, a woman with her own household, attracts Duke Orsino. Two other would-be suitors are her pretentious steward, Malvolio, and Sir Andrew Aguecheek. Onto this scene arrive the twins Viola and Sebastian; previously caught in a shipwreck, each thinks the other has drowned. Viola disguises herself as a male page and enters Orsino's service. Orsino sends her as his envoy to Olivia--only to have Olivia fall in love with the messenger. The play complicates, then wonderfully untangles, these relationships. The authoritative edition of Twelfth Night from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers, includes: -The exact text of the printed book for easy cross-reference -Hundreds of hypertext links for instant navigation -Freshly edited text based on the best early printed version of the play -Full explanatory notes conveniently linked to the text of the play -Scene-by-scene plot summaries -A key to the play's famous lines and phrases -An introduction to reading Shakespeare's language -An essay by a leading Shakespeare scholar providing a modern perspective on the play -Fresh images from the Folger Shakespeare Library's vast holdings of rare books -An annotated guide to further reading -An essay by a leading Shakespeare expert

Author: William Shakespeare
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Published: 06/18/2019
Pages: 336
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.85lbs
Size: 8.30h x 5.40w x 0.80d
ISBN: 9781982122492

About the Author
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England's Avon River. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

Barbara A.
