Only by removing Indian children from their homes for extended periods of time, policymakers reasoned, could white "civilization" take root while childhood memories of "savagism" gradually faded to the point of extinction. In the words of one official: "Kill the Indian and save the man."

This fully revised edition of Education for Extinction offers the only comprehensive account of this dispiriting effort, and incorporates the last twenty-five years of scholarship. Much more than a study of federal Indian policy, this book vividly details the day-to-day experiences of Indian youth living in a "total institution" designed to reconstruct them both psychologically and culturally. The assault on identity came in many forms: the shearing off of braids, the assignment of new names, uniformed drill routines, humiliating punishments, relentless attacks on native religious beliefs, patriotic indoctrinations, suppression of tribal languages, Victorian gender rituals, football contests, and industrial training.

Especially poignant is Adams's description of the ways in which students resisted or accommodated themselves to forced assimilation. Many converted to varying degrees, but others plotted escapes, committed arson, and devised ingenious strategies of passive resistance. Adams also argues that many of those who seemingly cooperated with the system were more than passive players in this drama, that the response of accommodation was not synonymous with cultural surrender. This is especially apparent in his analysis of students who returned to the reservation. He reveals the various ways in which graduates struggled to make sense of their lives and selectively drew upon their school experience in negotiating personal and tribal survival in a world increasingly dominated by white men.

The discussion comes full circle when Adams reviews the government's gradual retreat from the assimilationist vision. Partly because of persistent student resistance, but also partly because of a complex and sometimes contradictory set of progressive, humanitarian, and racist motivations, policymakers did eventually come to view boarding schools less enthusiastically.

Based upon extensive use of government archives, Indian and teacher autobiographies, and school newspapers, Adams's moving account is essential reading for scholars and general readers alike interested in Western history, Native American studies, American race relations, education history, and multiculturalism.

Author: David Wallace Adams
Publisher: University Press of Kansas
Published: 05/29/2020
Pages: 472
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 1.45lbs
Size: 9.00h x 5.80w x 1.20d
ISBN: 9780700629602

About the Author
Adams, David Wallace: - David Wallace Adams is professor emeritus at Cleveland State University, and author of Three Roads to Magdalena: Coming of Age in a Southwest Borderland, 1890â "1990, also from Kansas.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_f4d8f551-da9e-491f-9495-be7aa9ae37c2.jpg?v=1759931903
japanese-english-bilingual-visual-dictionary-9780744098693
Japanese - English Bilingual Visual Dictionary
With over 6,750 fully illustrated words and phrases in Japanese and English and a free bilingual audio app, DK's Japanese-English Bilingual Visual Dictionary is your essential companion to learning Japanese.

You will learn all the words and phrases you need to buy food and clothes, talk about work and education, visit the doctor, go to the bank, use public transport, and much more.

Fancy becoming an expert in the language? The wealth of classroom examples based on actual practice convincingly refutes the argument, reflected in much current practice, that EL and low-income students are incapable of benefiting from an intellectually challenging, inquiry-based curriculum.
--Jim Cummins University of Toronto Deep understanding, critical thinking, subject knowledge, and control of academic literacy are goals we have for all our students. The challenge for teachers is to find a way of teaching that helps everyone, including English learners, to reach these high expectations. In English Learners, Academic Literacy, and Thinking, Pauline Gibbons presents an action-oriented approach that gives English learners high-level support to match our high expectations. Focusing on the middle grades of school, she shows how to plan rigorous, literacy-oriented, content-based instruction and illustrates what a high-challenge, high-support curriculum looks like in practice. Gibbons (author of Scaffolding Language, Scaffolding Learning) presents and discusses in detail five broad areas that enable English learners to participate in high-quality learning across the curriculum:

engaging deeply with intellectual contexts

developing academic literacy

employing reading strategies and improving comprehension

gaining writing independence and learning content-area genres

using classroom talk to make sense of new concepts and as a bridge to writing.

Based on these areas she then presents guidelines on designing long-term, high-quality instruction that simultaneously provides explicit scaffolding for English learners. Gibbons makes these guidelines an instructional reality through dozens of examples of rich activities and tasks that can be used across the curriculum and that support the learning of all students. English Learners, Academic Literacy, and Thinking supports teachers with doable plans for instruction, reflection questions for individual or group study together, and suggestions for further reading. The authors present family-school partnerships in educational and non-educational settings across the United States, and identify frameworks, models, and practices for engaging multilingual families in schooling. This edited volume is organized into four sections. Section one, "School District Collaborations with Multilingual Families," describes how districts honor the knowledge of multilingual parents as foundational tenets in their collaborative work with them. Section two, "School Leadership Approaches to Engaging Multilingual Families," focuses on how school leaders enacted critical approaches to building relationships with multilingual families. Section three, "Educator Partnerships with Multilingual Families," explores educators' approaches to developing relationships with multilingual families. Section four, "Multilingual Families as Leaders in School Partnerships," highlights the visible and invisible ways that multilingual parents contribute to the overall success of their children. The text can be used on its own. However, the content is ideal for reinforcing the basics, and as a precursor to studying grammar or more advanced bilingual editions. Volume 1 in this series provides the language learner with a broad exposure to basic words and concepts, using visual queues to support understanding and retention. This picture dictionary takes the unconventional approach of including adjectives, verbs, adverbs and prepositions, not just nouns. In doing so, visual queues become a way to progress much deeper into the foreign language. Once a student has studied the basics, the Picture Dictionary can be a helpful language building resource. The suggestion is to progress through the dictionary as you would a normal book, rather than try and use it as a reference text. The dictionary provides the basis for a language learner to make an easy and fruitful transition to more advanced bilingual texts. If audio is an important component of your interest in languages, electronic devices that support quality text-to-speech (TTS) will likely be appealing. With a library card, TTS technology (in a device that supports the relevant content), and resources from 2Language Books (as digital content), an entire language learning system is available for not much more than a cup of coffee! There is no substantial financial outlay to get you started. Furthermore, there are no additional ongoing fees (and updates), and there are no expiry dates on 'premium' content and resources.
