The book has been written in
language as free from technical terms as is possible.
In a discussion of the methods of teaching it is necessary to consider
the ends or aims involved, as well as the process. The authors have, on
this account, included a chapter on the work of the teacher, in which is
discussed the aims of education. The success or failure of the work of a
teacher is determined by the changes which are brought to pass in the
children who are being taught. This book, therefore, includes a chapter on
the measurement of the achievements of children. Throughout the book the
discussion of the art of teaching is always modified by an acceptance upon
the part of the writers of the social purpose of education. The treatment
of each topic will be found to be based upon investigations and researches
in the fields of psychology and education which involve the measurement of
the achievements of children and of adults under varying conditions.
Wherever possible, the relation between the principle of teaching laid down
and the scientific inquiry upon which it is based is indicated.
Any careful study of the mental life and development of children reveals
at the same time the unity and the diversity of the process involved. For
the sake of definiteness and clearness, the authors have differentiated
between types of mental activity and the corresponding types of classroom
exercises. They have, at the same time, sought to make clear the
interdependence of the various aspects of teaching method and the unity
involved in mental development.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 12769
Author: Norsworthy, Naomi
Release Date: Jun 28, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Contributor (Author): Strayer, George D. The talks
now printed form the substance of that course, which has since then
been delivered at various places to various teacher-audiences. I
have found by experience that what my hearers seem least to relish
is analytical technicality, and what they most care for is concrete
practical application. So I have gradually weeded out the former,
and left the latter unreduced; and now, that I have at last written
out the lectures, they contain a minimum of what is deemed
'scientific' in psychology, and are practical and popular in the
extreme.
Some of my colleagues may possibly shake their heads at this;
but in taking my cue from what has seemed to me to be the feeling
of the audiences I believe that I am shaping my book so as to
satisfy the more genuine public need.
Teachers, of course, will miss the minute divisions,
subdivisions, and definitions, the lettered and numbered headings,
the variations of type, and all the other mechanical artifices on
which they are accustomed to prop their minds. But my main desire
has been to make them conceive, and, if possible, reproduce
sympathetically in their imagination, the mental life of their
pupil as the sort of active unity which he himself feels it to be.
He doesn't chop himself into distinct processes and
compartments; and it would have frustrated this deeper purpose of
my book to make it look, when printed, like a Baedeker's handbook
of travel or a text-book of arithmetic. So far as books printed
like this book force the fluidity of the facts upon the young
teacher's attention, so far I am sure they tend to do his intellect
a service, even though they may leave unsatisfied a craving (not
altogether without its legitimate grounds) for more nomenclature,
head-lines, and subdivisions.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 16287
Author: James, William
Release Date: Jul 13, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

Ontario Normal School Manuals: Science of Education

Value of Scientific Knowledge. In the practice of any intelligent
occupation or art, in so far as the practice attains to perfection,
there are manifested in the processes certain scientific principles and
methods to which the work of the one practising the art conforms. In the
successful practice, for example, of the art of composition, there are
manifested the principles of rhetoric; in that of housebuilding, the
principles of architecture; and in that of government, the principles of
civil polity. Assuming the existence of a science of education, it is
further evident that the student-teacher should make himself acquainted
with its leading principles, and likewise learn to apply these
principles in his practice of the art of[2] teaching. To this end,
however, it becomes necessary at the outset to determine the limits of
the subject-matter of the science. Before attempting to define psychology, it will be helpful to
make some inquiry into the nature of science in general. Science is
knowledge; it is what we know. But mere knowledge is not science. For a
bit of knowledge to become a part of science, its relation to other bits
of knowledge must be found. In botany, for example, bits of knowledge
about plants do not make a science of botany. To have a science of
botany, we must not only know about leaves, roots, flowers, seeds, etc.,
but we must know the relations of these parts and of all the parts of a
plant to one another. In other words, in science, we must not only
know, we must not only have knowledge, but we must know the
significance of the knowledge, must know its meaning. This is only
another way of saying that we must have knowledge and know its relation
to other knowledge.
A scientist is one who has learned to organize his knowledge. The main
difference between a scientist and one who is not a scientist is that
the scientist sees the significance of facts, while the non-scientific
man sees facts as more or less unrelated things. As one comes to hunt
for causes and inquire into the significance of things, one becomes a
scientist. A thing or an event always points beyond itself to something
else. This something else is what goes before it or comes after it,is
its cause or its effect. This causal relationship that exists between
events enables a scientist to prophesy. By carefully determining what
always precedes a certain event, a certain type of happening, a
scientist is able to predict the event. All that is necessary to be able
to predict an event is to have a clear knowledge of its true causes.
Whenever, beyond any doubt, these causes are found to be present, the
scientist knows the event will follow. Of course, all that he really
knows is that such results have always followed similar causes in the
past. But he has come to have faith in the uniformity and regularity of
nature. The chemist does not find sulphur, or oxygen, or any other
element acting one way one day under a certain set of conditions, and
acting another way the next day under exactly the same conditions. Nor
does the physicist find the laws of mechanics holding good one day and
not the next.
The scientist, therefore, in his thinking brings order out of chaos in
the world. If we do not know the causes and relations of things and
events, the world seems a very mixed-up, chaotic place, where anything
and everything is happening. But as we come to know causes and
relations, the world turns out to be a very orderly and systematic
place. It is a lawful world; it is not a world of chance. Everything is
related to everything else.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 18477
Author: Pyle, William Henry
Release Date: May 31, 2006
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Mind and Its Education

Authors, no doubt, are always gratified when their works find favorable
acceptance. The writer of this text has been doubly gratified, however,
at the cordial reception and widespread use accorded to the present
volume. This feeling does not arise from any narrow personal pride or
selfish interest, but rather from the fact that the warm approval of the
educational public has proved an important point; namely, that the
fundamental truths of psychology, when put simply and concretely, can be
made of interest and value to students of all ages from high school
juniors up, and to the general public as well. More encouraging still,
it has been demonstrated that the teachings of psychology can become
immediately helpful, not only in study or teaching, but also in business
or profession, in the control and guidance of the personal life, and in
the problems met in the routine of the day's work or its play.
In effecting the present revision, the salient features of the original
edition have been kept. The truths presented are the most fundamental
and important in the field of psychology. Disputed theories and
unsettled opinions are excluded. The subject matter is made concrete and
practical by the use of many illustrations and through application to
real problems. The style has been kept easy and familiar to facilitate
the reading. Aurlio da
Costa
Ferreira.

O ENSINO DA PEDOLOGIA
NA ESCOLA NORMAL PRIMRIA[1]

Minhas Senhoras e meus
Senhores:

Parafraseando o emrito
Claparde,

diagnstico e no soubesse examinar
convenientemente,
scientficamente, um doente, e
[8]
procurar as indicaes? Seria, hoje, porventura,
um mdico? No. Nem mereceria
confiana,
nem mereceria considerao e as penalidades
da lei at sbre le
recariam.

Como se poderiam considerar aqueles que
hoje se obstinassem a pretender desenvolver
a inteligncia, formar caractres, corrigir os
instintos da criana, sem nunca ter aprendido
a estud-la, a medir-lhe a inteligncia e a
examinar-lhe

geraes, capazes,
como dizia, parece-me, numa das suas clebres
lies de pedagogia, o meu querido
mestre, Dr. Bernardino Machado,
capazes no
s de transmitirem
tda a sua pureza o patrimnio
da civilizao dos antepassados, a
herclea fra atvica que
nos pode permitir
reabilitar-nos perante a
histriamas tambm
[9]
fazer-se para fomentar o progresso, melhorar
a raa, melhorar o solo, melhorar o pas; querer
que aqueles a quem compete fazer e refazer
a ptria, a faam e refaam como
noutros
to estulto como querer confiar hoje
do nosso comrcio, s antigas e gloriosas
caravelas!

Van Bierveliet, da
Universidade de
Gand,
numa das suas magistrais lies de pedagogia
scientfica, feitas para professores de
instruo
primria, exprime-se assim:

Consideremos uma classe qualquer e interroguemos
o professor; saberemos logo que
num conjunto de cincoenta alunos, por exemplo,
se encontram dois ou trs que demostram
uma grande diligncia, e aceitam com prazer
tdas as tarefas que se lhe impem. Constituem

pesada e aborrecida; constitui o grupo
dos preguiosos, dos
mandries. Estes, fazem
As classes
apresentam uma cabea, um corpo e uma cauda;
geralmente a cabea composta por dois
[10]
ou trs indivduos e a cauda, pelo
contrrio,
muitas vezes notavelmente desenvolvida; as
classes so organismos por vezes
microcfalos
(de cabea pequena) e
macrures (de cauda
grande).

A simples constatao dste
facto, basta
para demonstrar que o regimen escolar pouco
atraente para as inteligncias em
formao.

Se num jantar de cincoenta talheres se
constatasse que trs pessoas smente mostravam
bom apetite, trinta comiam com repugnncia
e o resto nada comia, concluir-se-ia, com
alguma razo, que ou o
men era
digerem. H outras, pelo contrrio, que perante
os conhecimentos apresentados, pelos mtodos
mais correntes, se comportam como disppticos
da inteligncia. Que se faz em regra a estas?
Castigam-se. Melhor fra cur-las.

Melhor fra, acrescento eu, saber conhecer
o feitio mental dos alunos, agrup-los consoante
as suas semelhanas e diferenas, e saber
administrar-lhes

No ensino sucede a mesma coisa. No se ensinam
[11]

no
pode, no deve desconhecer, ao entrar no
exerccio
No basta conhecer a
metodologia,
necessrio
a psicologia.

A metodologia dever, de resto, ajustar-se
psicologia da classe e do aluno.

Diz Claparde
num
livro, cuja leitura muito
lhes aconselho (Psychologie de
l'enfant):Muitas
pessoas supem que s a prtica do
ensino
pode formar o professor e dar-lhe a verdadeira
experincia. Seguramente, a importncia da
prtica capital para formar um especialista
numa determinada arte. Mas preciso esforar-se
por reduzir ao mnimo as experincias,
as tentativas, sobretudo quando se trata de
seres humanos.
in anima vili, e algumas vezes essas
experincias so demasiado longas e
penveis
para as geraes de alunos que as tm
de
sofrer. Sem dvida, a prtica pode, dentro de
certos limites, compensar a insuficincia dos
conhecimentos tericos, mas custa de quantos
rodeios e de quantos erros! fora de
construir pontes que abatem, ou mquinas que
estoiram e se escangalham, pode um tcnico
sem instruo terica acabar por ser
um bom
[12]
construtor e encontrar empricamente as frmulas
que le incapaz de calcular. Mas quem
quereria semelhante engenheiro?

Um professor sem educao
psicolgica

Estas parbolas devem convencer as senhoras
e os senhores normalistas da utilidade do
estudo da psicologia, do estudo das faculdades
mentais, na preparao dos professores de
instruo
primria.

Mas que psicologia?

Ser a psicologia clssica dos
compndios
de filosofia? Ser a psicologia especulativa?
Ser a psicologia, o conhecimento das faculdades
mentais pelo exame introspectivo de indivduos
excepcionais, supra-normais qusi sempre,
No.

E no entanto lagarta e
so o mesmo indivduo.

preparao
scientfica, que s em cursos superiores e
especiais
se pode adquirir, so em regra dados
perdidos, cheios de erros, falseados, qusi
inteis

numa escola normal primria, principalmente

tivesse feito estudos
especiais de antropologia, e no tivesse
suficientes conhecimentos de tcnica-pedomtrica,
que ensinasse a pedologia, scincia que
conveniente e, mais do que conveniente,
indispensvel
ensinar ao futuro professor.

No preciso exagerar como
Chaillou e
Mac-Auliffe, quando
na sua
Morfologia mdica,
dizem: A educao e
continua a ser puramente
pedaggica. Escapa ao nico
homem
que deve dirigi-la, ao mdico.
No. Mas
preciso dizer-se, porque fcil provar que o
, que necessrio que parte da
preparao
do professor primrio seja feita por mdico
especializado nas aplicaes das
scincias mdicas
pedagogia, e que o professor seja um
auxiliar do mdico.

Os exerccios que habitualmente passarei,
sero exerccios de
educao scientfica e neles
[15]
e desenvolve as faculdades da criana, mas
tambem o ensinar a estudar e a desenvolver

Instruo

possam compensar outras minhas faltas,
nome e reputao desta Escola, e finalmente

E A PSICOLOGIA EXPERIMENTAL[2]

To educate is to bring out all the
powers that are in the child and to
traim him to use them to the best
advantage of himself and indirectly of
the nation of which he is a part.

(Miss
C. Aguther,
Child Study,
June, 1917).

Minhas Senhoras e meus
Senhores:

A arte de educar fundamentalmente a
arte de regular a conduta presente e futura
dos que se tm de educar. Implica forosamente
o conhecimento da conduta, das causas
dela, do seu mecanismo e das possibilidades
que o indivduo oferece. A arte de educar assenta
[18]
educao, a pedagogia

a reger, ensinar nesse curso numa Escola Normal,

diz o educador e moralista Foerster, falando do
ensino dos animais. E quanto s ms
tendncias,
exacta idea acrca do valor e possibilidades
do livrinho Criminalidade e
Educao, do Sr.

[20]
seja arte esclarecida pela scincia, e no
simples empirismo.

Educar condicionar intencionalmente as
reaces do indivduo. Educar,
portanto, implica,
primeiro do que tudo, o saber estudar as
causas e mecanismo das reaces individuais.
E o estudo dessas reaces feito
experimentalmente
tem o maior intersse e importncia
para o educador. Muitas dessas reaces
so
de ordem interna e s o prprio
indivduo as
pode observar directamente, mas essas mesmas
so acompanhadas doutras reaces,
acessveis

Pedologia,
o meu distinto colega naquela e nesta Escola
Sr. Professor Dr. Alberto
Pimentel, cujo
livrinho de lies lhes aconselho, procurou
orientar o ensino terico da Psicologia. Eu,
por minha parte, completarei sse trabalho
ensinando-lhes a tcnica dos estudos
psicolgicos,

No
qusi se confunde, confunde-se at. Em psicologia
animal, ramo da psicologia qusi desconhecido
entre ns, a psicologia experimental
[21]
funda-se na educabilidade,
o proprio exame
da educabilidade, a propria arte da
educao

Hache-Souplet,
director do Instituto de Psicologia Zoolgica,
intitulado De l'animal
l'enfant (Bibl. de ph.
contemporaine) e que se pode considerar um
pequeno manual adoptvel na preparao
dos
professores de ensino infantil.

No se surpreendam com ste atrevido conselho
de lhes indicar um livro de psicologia
zoolgica, como meio de preparao
pedaggica.
indispensvel,
pelo menos mais necessria a prtica
dos mtodos da psicologia objectiva. Num dos
melhores e mais modernos livros de psicologia
pedaggica, o de
Thorndike,
notvel
professor
de psicologia pedaggica numa escola de mestres,
tm um livro cheio de estudos interessantes
de psicologia zoolgica sbre a
inteligncia
dos animais, estudada pelos meios da
psicologia experimental; e o afamado e emrito
psiclogo suisso, cujo nome j vai sendo
banal citar entre ns, o Professor
Claparde
educao
deveria possuir um servio anexo...,
[22]
quero dizer, um laboratrio de psicologia
animal...

Adestrar um animal, regular-lhe a conduta,
aprender muitas vezes a ensinar uma criana.
Algumas vezes, por isso, recorrerei, se as
circunstncias o permitirem, a alguns exerccios
de psicologia animal, para lhes esclarecer
uma ou outra questo psicotcnica
pedaggica.

O exame objectivo das reaces ser o
escopo
principal do meu curso. Curso prtico de
psicologia objectiva podia bem ser o ttulo a
dar-lhe. Psicologia objectiva no quere porm
dizer, que seja exclusivamente um curso de
psico-fisiologia, como muitos podem supor. A
psico-fisiologia apenas uma parte da psicologia
objectiva, aquela em que se estudam as
variaes fisiolgicas,
prpriamente ditas, que
acompanham ou condicionam os fenmenos
mentais. As reaces exteriorizam-se
tambm
por outras frmas, que no podem
smente
ser estudadas pelos mtodos da fisiologia.
O estudo das reaces provocadas por certos
reagentes mentais um verdadeiro estudo
pedaggico. Outra cousa no a maior
parte das vezes o estudo dos chamados
tests,
ouvido
falar e talvez tenham j visto descritos.

A psicologia experimental ser talvez ainda
prefervel psicologia objectiva, porque a
psicologia
experimental atinge tambm o estudo
[23]
as reaces que o aluno e a escola nele
determinam para examinar a sua aptido, e
a corrigir vcios de reaco, que
so por vezes
causa de graves perturbaes escolares.
No

intuo.

No aluno professor poder-se h com vantagem
praticar a psicologia experimental subjectiva.
A psicologia experimental no apenas
a psicologia objectiva, repito. E a propsito
lembrarei as palavras do fisiologista francs
Prof. Ch. Richet:
A
observao interior constitui

psicolgico do educando e porque minha
teno, mesmo quando se trate da
prtica da
psicologia subjectiva, recorrer a ela apenas
como um auxiliar da psicologia objectiva. A
propsito recordo os dizeres do grande
Binet:
Em nossa opinio, diz le,
no preciso procurar
[24]
limitar e simplificar as respostas do indivduo
em experincia, preciso, pelo
contrrio,
investigao
ao crculo da idea preconcebida: podem-se
constatar muitas vezes factos novos e no previstos,
que muitas vezes tambm permitem
compreender o mecanismo dum certo estado
de conscincia.

Com felicidade, pois, se chamou Curso prtico
de psicologia experimental ao curso de
tcnica psicolgica desta Escola, criado pelo
Sr. Ministro de Instruo, Prof. Dr.
Alfredo de
Magalhes, cujo nome deve merecer sempre
a
todos ns, desta Escola Normal, uma grata homenagem,
pela ateno que lhe merecemos e
pelo entusiasmo, apaixonado entusiasmo e energia,
com que procurou instalar e proteger a
nova Escola. O curso prtico, e acentuo a palavra
freqncia

no impossibilidade, do exame subjectivo no
constiti
uma frma excelente de fazer a
educao
scientfica do aluno professor, de dar-lhe
hbitos
de observao e experincia
extrospectivos
mentais
de que introspectivamente se tem menos conhecimento.

Em psicologia pedaggica o sub-consciente
vale mais que o consciente. E mesmo quando
ao educador compete regular o comportamento
do adulto, quando ao educador compete fazer
reeducao, compete-lhe principalmente examinar
o sub-consciente, porque nele que se
guarda a fra que a experincia
anterior gerou

A conduta principalmente governada
introspectivo e a fiscalizao, censura e
fomos e no ntimo somos.

[26]
j invadiu a filosofia, a medicina e a pedagogia,
que assenta tda no estudo do sub-consciente
e particularmente na pesquisa das impresses
que nele gravou a vida sexual. Refiro-me

psico-anlise, de
Freud e seus
sequazes,
j
banalizada definio de Gustavo
Le Bon: A
educao a arte de fazer passar do
consciente
para o inconsciente. Paraprofessionals provide inclusion supports to students with special needs, and act as extra staff in classrooms for students with emotional and behavioral difficulties. Paraprofessionals are often asked to monitor hallways, buses and playgrounds and perform a variety of other important duties that require skill in preventing and managing behavior. This book is designed to teach paraprofessionals important concepts and best practices for handling behaviors. This book covers the following:

The book begins with a discussion of how to understand challenging behavior. This book takes the perspective that behaviors are a result of critical skill deficits in social and emotional skills and can be understood from a perspective of their function for the student.

Next, this book covers the importance of positive, proactive and collaborative methods for addressing behavior. A central theme of this book is for staff members to move away from reactive, disciplinary methods that stress consequences and contingencies to methods that help students address the underlying needs evidenced by their behavior.

A complete review of many different types of behavior management skills, when to use them, how to use them (along with sample dialogue) is provided. In this book, James Lang presents a strategy for improving student learning with a series of small but powerful changes that make a big difference―many of which can be put into practice in a single class period. These are simple interventions that can be integrated into pre-existing techniques, along with clear descriptions of how to do so. How many students graduate from high school unprepared for careers where lifelong learning is essential to succeed? These problems stem from an educational system that uses time spent in a classroom and the results of standardized, multiple-choice tests as proxies for actual understanding. Educators Tony Wagner and Ulrik Juul Christensen call for a radical new system of learning, where students progress individually when they demonstrate that they can use what they have learned--no matter how long it takes to get there. This is called mastery learning, and it is the future of education.

This book shows how mastery learning is already being put to use in the United States and around the world, from kindergarten to college and in the workplace. Through conversations with teachers, students, parents, policymakers, and employers, Wagner and Christensen show how mastery improves motivation and prepares students for productive work, an engaged civic life, and personal growth and well-being. They also outline the challenges of adopting mastery learning and how to overcome them. Mastery is an urgent call to action to transform education for all.

Author: Tony Wagner,Ulrik Juul Christensen
Publisher: Basic Books
Published: 09/16/2025
Pages: 336
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.19lbs
Size: 9.44h x 6.35w x 1.16d
ISBN: 9781541601925

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 07/01/2025

About the Author
Tony Wagner is senior research fellow at the Learning Policy Institute and former codirector of Harvard Graduate School of Education's Change Leadership Group. Yet if karma has the final say, why would it appear that some people are luckier than others? Our own thoughts, words, choices, habits and attitudes continue to turn and empower circumstances, events and people, which in turn touch and shape our destiny. Yet we often find ourselves trapped in confusion where life no longer seems to make any sense. I believe that within the horizon of our hearts, the voice of our spirit echoes truth. We are designed to explore and discover our inmost self, the wealth of light and life within our reach. Even the sense of hopelessness in a crisis would prompt us to dig deeper to find a rock-solid foundation inside of us. I trust that this writing will challenge and stir you to the core of your being and your beliefs to remove every trace of the substitute, man-made self-image with its glorious head of golden glitter and its silvery bust and bronze body. The little stone that was cut out by no human hand is destined to strike that image of vanity and piety on its feet of iron and clay and become in its place a Rock that fills the whole earth; the true image and likeness of God, restored and revealed in ordinary human life. They pick these skills up in the course of their everyday living. In this collection of essays, developmental psychologist Peter Gray presents the evidence that this is so. He also presents evidence that teaching-especially when it is forced and comes too early-can interfere with children's learning to read and calculate. In addition, in one essay he describes the difference between Self-Directed Education and progressive education, and in another he presents evidence refuting the claim that children lose academic skills during summer vacation from school (the so-called "summer slide"). This book is especially valuable for parents who are thinking of opting out of standard schooling for their children but are concerned about their children's acquisition of academic skills.
