The following
little Essays are chiefly calculated
for the younger part of her own[p 2]
sex, who, she flatters herself, will not
esteem them the less, because they were
written immediately for their service.
She by no means pretends to have
composed a regular system of morals,
or a finished plan of conduct: she has
only endeavoured to make a few remarks
on such circumstances as seemed
to her susceptible of some improvement,
and on such subjects as she imagined
were particularly interesting to
young ladies, on their first introduction
into the world. She hopes they
will not be offended if she has occasionally
pointed out certain qualities,
and suggested certain tempers, and
dispositions, as peculiarly feminine, and
hazarded some observations which naturally
arose from the subject, on the
different characters which mark the
sexes. And here again she takes the
liberty to repeat that these distinctions[p 3]
cannot be too nicely maintained; for
besides those important qualities common
to both, each sex has its respective,
appropriated qualifications, which
would cease to be meritorious, the instant
they ceased to be appropriated.
Nature, propriety, and custom have
prescribed certain bounds to each;
bounds which the prudent and the
candid will never attempt to break
down; and indeed it would be highly
impolitic to annihilate distinctions from
which each acquires excellence, and
to attempt innovations, by which both
would be losers.
Women therefore never understand
their own interests so little, as when
they affect those qualities and accomplishments,
from the want of which
they derive their highest merit. "The
porcelain clay of human kind," says[p 4]
an admired writer, speaking of the sex.
Greater delicacy evidently implies
greater fragility; and this weakness, natural
and moral, clearly points out the
necessity of a superior degree of caution,
retirement, and reserve.
If the author may be allowed to
keep up the allusion of the poet, just
quoted, she would ask if we do not
put the finest vases, and the costliest
images in places of the greatest security,
and most remote from any probability
of accident, or destruction?
By being so situated, they find their
protection in their weakness, and their
safety in their delicacy. This metaphor
is far from being used with a design
of placing young ladies in a trivial,
unimportant light; it is only
introduced to insinuate, that where
there is more beauty, and more weak[p 5]ness,
there should be greater circumspection,
and superior prudence.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 19595
Author: More, Hannah
Release Date: Oct 21, 2006
Format: eBook
Language: English

National Bestseller

An Amazon Best of Biography/Memoir

Comedian and severe dyslexic Phil Hanley reveals his unlikely path to success in a story that is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking.

When Phil Hanley was in first grade, he realized something that would forever set him apart from his peers: he couldn't read. But recently, Nussbaum argues, thinking about the aims of education has gone disturbingly awry in the United States and abroad. We increasingly treat education as though its primary goal were to teach students to be economically productive rather than to think critically and become knowledgeable, productive, and empathetic individuals. This shortsighted focus on profitable skills has eroded our ability to criticize authority, reduced our sympathy with the marginalized and different, and damaged our competence to deal with complex global problems. And the loss of these basic capacities jeopardizes the health of democracies and the hope of a decent world.

In response to this dire situation, Nussbaum argues that we must resist efforts to reduce education to a tool of the gross national product. Rather, we must work to reconnect education to the humanities in order to give students the capacity to be true democratic citizens of their countries and the world.

Translated into twenty-five languages, Not for Profit draws on the stories of troubling--and hopeful--global educational developments. They pick these skills up in the course of their everyday living. In this collection of essays, developmental psychologist Peter Gray presents the evidence that this is so. He also presents evidence that teaching-especially when it is forced and comes too early-can interfere with children's learning to read and calculate. In addition, in one essay he describes the difference between Self-Directed Education and progressive education, and in another he presents evidence refuting the claim that children lose academic skills during summer vacation from school (the so-called "summer slide"). This book is especially valuable for parents who are thinking of opting out of standard schooling for their children but are concerned about their children's acquisition of academic skills. It is also valuable for educators who are interested in stretching their understanding of how children naturally learn the kinds of skills that schools try to teach.

Author: Peter Gray
Publisher: Alliance for Self-Directed Education
Published: 10/15/2020
Pages: 122
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.25lbs
Size: 7.00h x 5.00w x 0.26d
ISBN: 9781952837043

This title is not returnable
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_34424600-c63c-420f-b401-31a233d25557.jpg?v=1760036022
math-with-bad-drawings-illuminating-the-ideas-that-shape-our-reality-9780316509039
Math with Bad Drawings: Illuminating the Ideas That Shape Our Reality
A hilarious reeducation in mathematics-full of joy, jokes, and stick figures-that sheds light on the countless practical and wonderful ways that math structures and shapes our world.

In Math With Bad Drawings, Ben Orlin reveals to us what math actually is; its myriad uses, its strange symbols, and the wild leaps of logic and faith that define the usually impenetrable work of the mathematician.

Truth and knowledge come in multiple forms: colorful drawings, encouraging jokes, and the stories and insights of an empathetic teacher who believes that math should belong to everyone. Their natural curiosity, playfulness, sociability, willfulness, adventurousness, tendency to look ahead, and desire to do well in the world were all shaped, by natural selection, to serve the function of education. In this collection of essays, developmental psychologist Peter Gray describes, with research evidence, how these natural tendencies play themselves out in children who are not schooled but, instead, are allowed ample time and opportunity to exercise their natural educative drives. He explains, especially, how children learn from one another when allowed to play freely in settings where they are not segregated by age. In addition, he presents evidence that children come into the world with prosocial drives-to help, share, and comfort-that grow ever stronger when adults allow them to grow. He also discusses ADHD as a natural and valuable personality variation, not a disorder, which causes problems in the typical school environment but does not interfere with Self-Directed Education.

Author: Peter Gray
Publisher: Alliance for Self-Directed Education
Published: 10/15/2020
Pages: 172
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.34lbs
Size: 7.00h x 5.00w x 0.37d
ISBN: 9781952837067

This title is not returnable
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_36ef573e-901d-4d18-b6bc-ad925d76b90a.jpg?v=1761691368
letters-to-a-young-teacher-9780307393722
Letters to a Young Teacher
"This remarkable book is a testament to teachers who not only respect and advocate for children on a daily basis but who are the necessary guardians of the spirit. It offers advice about how writers can distinguish their writing from the assembly-line writing that artificial intelligence tends to generate, and how they can develop their style to stand out to their teachers, employers, and clients.

Author: John Marsh
Publisher: University of Michigan Press ELT
Published: 01/27/2026
Pages: 166
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.60lbs
Size: 9.00h x 6.00w x 0.60d
ISBN: 9780472040070

Review Citation(s):
Library Journal 10/01/2025 pg. 96

About the Author
John Marsh is Professor of English and Director of the Center for American Literary Studies at Pennsylvania State University.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_f746eb26-35e9-4bca-a1ab-901134c06c7e.jpg?v=1770748936
forced-by-circumstance-chicana-feminist-essays-1981-2024-9781951874100
Forced by Circumstance: Chicana Feminist Essays (1981-2024)
A landmark collection of the work of pioneering Chicana scholar, Norma Alarcóoacute;n.
Forced by Circumstance gathers in one volume foundational essays by, and interviews with one of the most highly esteemed intellectuals in Chicana/o, Latina/o, and Feminist Studies. Drawing on more than thirty years in the classroom, she began traveling California and documenting the stories of fellow educators and librarians who have been harassed and threatened for teaching honestly about race, gender, immigration, religion, and sexuality. Many people would be surprised to hear that it's happening in California, long considered the haven of liberals and the pinnacle of tolerance. Florida and Texas have been the canary-in-the-coalmine of nascent culture wars, but California is now the disaster siren, screaming a state of emergency.

Pushed to the Edge is a powerful and timely collection of first-person accounts from the front lines of today's escalating culture wars. Cassandra, a young, queer woman of color and an award-winning teacher, was shattered by homophobia and viciously emboldened parents, and was ultimately forced to leave the job she'd dreamed of since kindergarten. In Temecula, educators mobilized their community to try to overthrow the majority-Christian nationalist school board determined to eliminate the teaching of Black history. There are Black educators, queer teachers, targeted librarians, and vulnerable students, all with stories to tell. While rooted in California, the book's insights and urgency resonate nationwide--offering both a sobering view of what's at stake in our schools and our libraries and a hopeful testament to those who refuse to back down.

Author: Sue Granzella
Publisher: New Press
Published: 04/07/2026
Pages: 272
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.10lbs
Size: 9.00h x 5.80w x 1.20d
ISBN: 9798893850147

Review Citation(s):
Publishers Weekly 02/09/2026

About the Author

Sue Granzella is a longtime public school teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area. Tus verdades no interesan a nadie: interesan tus miserias, tus fracasos y tus debilidades. La verdad sólo se revela y se conoce cuando no tiene consecuencias emocionales. La verdad no es emocionante. No te engañes. In The Know-Nothing Campaign Against Higher Learning, literary and film critic James Chandler spotlights an American tradition of such hostility to intellectual life, especially the nativist movement of the 1850s that persecuted Catholic immigrants from Ireland and Germany. Ironically, Steve Bannon, the self-proclaimed "Know-Nothing vulgarian" who long ago recruited candidate Trump to his anti-intellectual crusade, is himself the great-grandson of an Irish immigrant who would have faced Know-Nothing backlash in that era.

Such dark ironies define our moment, Chandler argues, and they call out not only for intellectual critique but also for satire. Yet in the midst of the MAGA campaign's calamitous effects on American public discourse, even satire must confront the "kayfabe" practices imported by Trump from professional wrestling, which mix illusion and reality to turn political life into a "spectacle without thought." Drawing widely on cultural critics from Jonathan Swift and Alexis de Tocqueville to Roland Barthes, Chandler's pamphlet offers an elegant and bracing account of the MAGA campaign against higher learning and its transformative effects on criticism and democracy itself.

Author: James Chandler
Publisher: Prickly Paradigm Press
Published: 08/19/2026
Pages: 166
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.30lbs
Size: 6.90h x 4.50w x 0.50d
ISBN: 9781958846186

About the Author

James Chandler is the William B.
