This implies that its object is, on
the one hand, intellectual, not moral; and, on the other,
that it is the diffusion and extension of knowledge rather
than the advancement. If its object were scientific and
philosophical discovery, I do not see why a University
should have students; if religious training, I do not see
how it can be the seat of literature and science.

Such is a University in its essence, and independently
of its relation to the Church. From my
writings on education I have selected only those
which may have some claim to permanent interest,
and all but two have been tested by previous publication.
Those of the first group deal with questions
about which we teachers, eager about our immeasurable
art beyond most professional persons,
never cease to wonder and debate: What is teaching?
How far may it influence character? Can it be practiced
on persons too busy or too poor to come to our
class-rooms? To subjects of what scope should it be
applied? And how shall we content ourselves with
its necessary limitations? Under these diverse headings
a kind of philosophy of education is outlined.
The last two papers, having been given as lectures
and stenographically reported, I have left in their
original colloquial form. A group of papers on Harvard
follows, preceded by an explanatory note, and
the volume closes with a few papers by Mrs. Palmer.
She and I often talked of preparing together a book
on education. Now, alone, I gather up these fragments.
In America, a land of idealism, the profession of
teaching has become one of the greatest of human
employments. In 1903-04 half a million teachers
were in charge of sixteen million pupils. Stating the
same facts differently, we may say that a fifth of our
entire population is constantly at school; and that
wherever one hundred and sixty men, women, and
children are gathered, a teacher is sure to be among
them.
But figures fail to express the importance of the
work. If each year an equal number of persons
should come in contact with as many lawyers, no
such social consequences would follow. The touch
of the teacher, like that of no other person, is formative.
Our young people are for long periods associated
with those who are expected to fashion them
into men and women of an approved type. A charge
so influential is committed to nobody else in the
community, not even to the ministers; for though
these have a more searching aim, they are directly
occupied with it but one day instead of six, but one
hour instead of five. Accordingly, as the tract of
4
knowledge has widened, and the creative opportunities
involved in conducting a young person over
it have correspondingly become apparent, the profession
of teaching has risen to a notable height of
dignity and attractiveness. It has moved from a subordinate
to a central place in social influence, and
now undertakes much of the work which formerly
fell to the church. Each year divinity schools attract
fewer students, graduate and normal schools more.
On school and college instruction the community
now bestows its choicest minds, its highest hopes,
and its largest sums. During the year 1903-04
the United States spent for teaching not less than
$350,000,000.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 36774
Author: Palmer, Alice Freeman
Release Date: Jul 17, 2011
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Contributor (Author): Palmer, George Herbert, 1842-1933

An American at Oxford

By a curious coincidence, the day on which the
last proof of this book was sent to the
printer saw the publication of the will of the late
Cecil Rhodes, providing that each of the United
States is forever to be represented at Oxford by
two carefully selected undergraduate students.
That the plan will result in any speedy realization
of the ideals of the great exponent of English
power in the new worlds is perhaps not to
be expected. For the future of American education,
on the other hand, few things could be more
fortunate. Native and independent as our national
genius has always been, and seems likely to
remain, it has always been highly assimilative.
In the past, we have received much needed aliment
from the German universities. For the present,
the elements of which we have most need may best,
as I think, be assimilated from England.
Whether or not Americans at Oxford become
imbued with Mr. Rhodes's conceptions as to the
destiny of the English peoples, they can scarcely
vi
fail to observe that Oxford affords to its undergraduates
a very sensibly ordered and invigorating
life, a very sensibly ordered and invigorating education.
This, as I have endeavored to point out
in the following pages, our American universities
do not now afford, nor are they likely to afford it
until the social and the educational systems are
more perfectly organized than they have ever
been, or seem likely to be, under the dominance
of German ideals. If, however, the new Oxford-trained
Americans should ever become an important
factor in our university life, the future is
bright with hope. We have assimilated, or are
assimilating, the best spirit of German education;
and if we were to make a similar draft on the
best educational spirit in England, our universities
would become far superior as regards their organization
and ideals, and probably also as regards
what they accomplish, to any in Europe. The purpose
and result of an introduction of English
methods would of course not be to imitate foreign
custom, but to give fuller scope to our native character,
so that if the American educational ideals
in the end approximate the English more closely
than they do at present, such a result would be
merely incidental to the fact that the two countries
vii
have at bottom much the same social character and
instincts. The
earliest tangible sign of the progress of the movement was
the foundation in London of Queen's College, Bedford
College and the North London Collegiate School for Girls,
and in the provinces of the Cheltenham Ladies' College.
This inaugurated the era of public secondary education for
girls, who now have their large, well-equipped schools in
every town.
At first the education given was necessarily very simple;
but as the schoolgirls of the new age grew up, the need for
a more extended training became apparent. It was met
partly by an extension of the teaching given in certain of
the schools; partly by the establishment of a system of
lectures for older girls, notably at Queen's College, London,
and in Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester. Before long it
became clear that some more systematic higher education
must be provided, and efforts were made to enlist the
sympathies of the Universities. University professors undertook
to repeat their lectures for the benefit of girls; but the
number of girls was for some time too few to finance these
schemes, and it was apparent that either their numbers must
be increased by the provision of residence, or expenses must
be reduced by obtaining the admission of girls to the classes
held for men. Both measures were attempted. A residential
College for girls was established at Hitchin (1869), afterwards
removed to Girton, near Cambridge (1873); Newnham[Pg 4]
Hall (later "College") was founded in Cambridge in 1871;
and in Oxford, Lady Margaret Hall (1878) and Somerville
Hall (later "College") (1879). Before long residence in or
near London was provided by Bedford College, Westfield
College, and the Royal Holloway College at Englefield
Green in Surrey.
Meanwhile, a great impetus had been given in 1878 to
the higher education of women throughout England by the
opening to them of the examinations and degrees of the
University of London. This University was at that time
purely an examining body, and teaching had to be provided
locally; but the possibility of obtaining the hall-mark of a
University degree greatly increased the number of girls seeking
instruction in the provincial towns, and many institutions
gradually opened their doors, among the first being
Owens College, afterwards the University of Manchester.
At Glasgow, Queen Margaret College, availing itself largely
of the services of University lecturers, was founded in 1883.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 50840
Author: Sheavyn, Phoebe
Release Date: Jan 4, 2016
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/50840_bd9d8df1-1026-438e-a6fc-0f7b0be228bc.jpg?v=1671773870
college-prolongs-infancy-gb-68570
College prolongs infancy

College prolongs infancy

... the ideals and methods which
are dynamic in our institutions of
higher learning are false. In a world where thousands of equally qualified students vie for a fixed number of spots at elite institutions, admissions officers often make split-second decisions based on a variety of factors--like diversity, money, and, ultimately, whether a student will enroll if accepted.

One of the most insightful books ever about "getting in" and what higher education has become, Who Gets In and Why not only provides an unusually intimate look at how admissions decisions get made, but guides prospective students on how to honestly assess their strengths and match with the schools that will best serve their interests.

Author: Jeffrey Selingo
Publisher: Scribner Book Company
Published: 09/15/2020
Pages: 320
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.05lbs
Size: 9.10h x 6.10w x 1.30d
ISBN: 9781982116293

Review Citation(s):
Publishers Weekly 06/22/2020
Kirkus Reviews 07/01/2020
Booklist 08/01/2020 pg. 10
Library Journal 09/01/2020 pg. 77

About the Author
Jeffrey Selingo has written about colleges and universities for more than two and a half decades and is a New York Times bestselling author of three books. Who Gets In and Why: A Year Inside College Admissions takes readers inside the admissions offices of three selective universities and was named among the 100 Notable Books of the year by The New York Times. Dream School: Finding the College That's Right For You is based on two-plus years of research and an original survey of more than 3,000 parents. Yet, as Anne Trumbore shows in The Teacher in the Machine, the promises of today's cutting-edge technologies aren't new. Long before the excitement about the disruptive potential of generative AI-powered tutors and massive open online courses, scholars at Stanford, MIT, and the University of Illinois in the 1960s and 1970s were encouraged by the US government to experiment with computers and artificial intelligence in education. Trumbore argues that the contrast between these two eras of educational technology reveals the changing role of higher education in the United States as it shifted from a public good to a private investment.

Writing from a unique insider's perspective and drawing on interviews with key figures, historical research, and case studies, Trumbore traces today's disparate discussions about generative AI, student loan debt, and declining social trust in higher education back to their common origins at a handful of elite universities fifty years ago. Arguing that those early educational experiments have resonance today, Trumbore points the way to a more equitable and collaborative pedagogical future. Her account offers a critical lens on the history of technology in education just as universities and students seek a stronger hand in shaping the future of their institutions.

Author: Anne Trumbore
Publisher: Princeton University Press
Published: 05/27/2025
Pages: 240
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 0.90lbs
Size: 8.50h x 5.60w x 1.10d
ISBN: 9780691198767

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 04/15/2025

About the Author
Anne Trumbore is Chief Digital Learning Officer at the Sands Institute for Lifelong Learning at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. In this Little Book, Sheryl Wilson and Caitlin Morneau draw on experience in restorative justice facilitation, education, community organizing, and leadership in movement building to illuminate pathways that invite, expand, and sustain restorative justice engagement. Lunsford ask twelve well-known composition theorists to create detailed syllabi for a first-year composition course and then to explain their theoretical foundations. Each contributor to FIRST-YEAR COMPOSITION: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE, discusses the major goals and objectives for their course, its major assignments, their use of outside texts, the role of reading and responding to these texts, the nature of classroom discussion, their methods of responding to student writing, and their assessment methods. The contributors to FIRST-YEAR COMPOSITION: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE include Chris Anson, Suresh Canagarajah, Douglas Hesse, Asao Inoue, Paula Mathieu, Teresa Redd, Alexander Reid, Jody, Shipka, Howard Tinberg, Victor Villanueva, Elizabeth Wardle and Doug Downs, and Kathleen Blake Yancey. Their twelve essays provide a window into these teachers' classrooms that will help readers, teachers, and writing program administrators appreciate the strengths of unity and diversity in rhetoric and composition as a field. The examples will empower new and experienced teachers and administrators. Between attacks on DEI programming, dwindling enrollment in the humanities, questions about the value of a college education, funding cuts, and battles over woke activism and liberal indoctrination, the campus culture wars are raging. But the experience on campus is not quite what the culture warriors would have us believe.

A decade after his landmark book on faculty politics, Neil Gross decided it was time to give those with the most at stake a chance to speak for themselves. Beginning in the spring of 2024, he launched a massive investigation into how our polarized politics have remade the college experience, interviewing students across the country and polling thousands more. He looked at liberal arts colleges, state schools, faith-based institutions, and elite universities and combed through studies tracking everything from campus dating habits to changes in syllabi.

What he found was startling: Undergraduates today are choosing their schools, their friends, their partners, their activities--even their majors--on the basis of their political beliefs to a degree unimaginable ten years ago, with the goal of interacting as little as possible with anyone whose views don't line up with their own. Popular campus dating apps invite you to swipe left if you don't like someone's political profile--a metaphor for today's college experience writ large. Instead of resisting this trend, some faculty and administrators encouraged it, creating a cloistered environment where students could avoid uncomfortable disagreement.

What Happened to College? paints a picture of an educational system in crisis and ripe for change. Grounding his analysis in sorely needed data and deftly debunking overstated claims, Gross points to places where open debate and friendship across political lines still thrive. What are these campus communities doing right? Can we teach college students to disagree better? The Self-Survey for the College Bound, used by hundreds of students every week, helps you identify the traits and values that will shape where you thrive, not just where you get in. A new ranking worksheet in this edition takes that thinking further, asking you to weigh and prioritize the qualities that matter most to you - turning vague preferences into a focused, personalized college list.

This 16th edition arrives in a larger, more workable format designed around those worksheets, with bigger fonts and a layout that makes the whole process easier to navigate. It also brings new material on using AI tools to support your college planning, along with updated resources and fresh guidance on everything from finding colleges to managing costs.
