Rachel Lynde lived
just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with
alders and ladies eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source
away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an
intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods, with dark
secrets of pool and cascade; but by the time it reached Lyndes Hollow it
was a quiet, well-conducted little stream, for not even a brook could run past
Mrs. Rachel Lyndes door without due regard for decency and decorum; it
probably was conscious that Mrs. Rachel was sitting at her window, keeping a
sharp eye on everything that passed, from brooks and children up, and that if
she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had
ferreted out the whys and wherefores thereof.

There are plenty of people in Avonlea and out of it, who can attend closely to
their neighbors business by dint of neglecting their own; but Mrs.
Rachel Lynde was one of those capable creatures who can manage their own
concerns and those of other folks into the bargain. She was a notable
housewife; her work was always done and well done; she ran the
Sewing Circle, helped run the Sunday-school, and was the strongest prop of the
Church Aid Society and Foreign Missions Auxiliary. Yet with all this Mrs.
Rachel found abundant time to sit for hours at her kitchen window, knitting
cotton warp quiltsshe had knitted sixteen of them, as
Avonlea housekeepers were wont to tell in awed voicesand keeping a sharp
eye on the main road that crossed the hollow and wound up the steep red hill
beyond. Since Avonlea occupied a little triangular peninsula jutting out into
the Gulf of St. Lawrence with water on two sides of it, anybody who went out of
it or into it had to pass over that hill road and so run the unseen gauntlet of
Mrs. Rachels all-seeing eye.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 45
Author: Montgomery, L. He and I are old
friendswe grew up together in the same Nebraska townand we had
much to say to each other. While the train flashed through never-ending miles
of ripe wheat, by country towns and bright-flowered pastures and oak groves
wilting in the sun, we sat in the observation car, where the woodwork was hot
to the touch and red dust lay deep over everything. The dust and heat, the
burning wind, reminded us of many things. We were talking about what it is like
to spend ones childhood in little towns like these, buried in wheat and
corn, under stimulating extremes of climate: burning summers when the world
lies green and billowy beneath a brilliant sky, when one is fairly stifled in
vegetation, in the color and smell of strong weeds and heavy harvests; blustery
winters with little snow, when the whole country is stripped bare and gray as
sheet-iron. We agreed that no one who had not grown up in a little prairie town
could know anything about it. It was a kind of freemasonry, we said.

Although Jim Burden and I both live in New York, and are old friends, I do not
see much of him there. He is legal counsel for one of the great Western
railways, and is sometimes away from his New York office for weeks together.
That is one reason why we do not often meet. Another is that I do not like his
wife.

When Jim was still an obscure young lawyer, struggling to make his way in New
York, his career was suddenly advanced by a brilliant marriage. Genevieve
Whitney was the only daughter of a distinguished man. Her marriage with young
Burden was the subject of sharp comment at the time. It was said she had been
brutally jilted by her cousin, Rutland Whitney, and that she married this
unknown man from the West out of bravado. She was a restless, headstrong girl,
even then, who liked to astonish her friends. Later, when I knew her, she was
always doing something unexpected. She gave one of her town houses for a
Suffrage headquarters, produced one of her own plays at the Princess Theater,
was arrested for picketing during a garment-makers strike, etc. I am
never able to believe that she has much feeling for the causes to which she
lends her name and her fleeting interest. She is handsome, energetic,
executive, but to me she seems unimpressionable and temperamentally incapable
of enthusiasm. Her husbands quiet tastes irritate her, I think, and she
finds it worth while to play the patroness to a group of young poets and
painters of advanced ideas and mediocre ability. She has her own fortune and
lives her own life. For some reason, she wishes to remain Mrs. James Burden.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 242
Author: Cather, Willa
Release Date: Jul 11, 2008
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/242_f6e09e04-82c1-4f56-bcf3-dfeaec315160.jpg?v=1671247666
at-the-foot-of-the-rainbow-gb-532
At the Foot of the Rainbow

At the Foot of the Rainbow

"And the bow shall be set in the cloud; and I will look upon it,
that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and
every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth."
  GENESIS, ix-16.

For several years Doubleday, Page & Company have been receiving
repeated requests for information about the life and books of Gene
Stratton-Porter. That was because for once in your life
you had relented so far as to obey my wishes. At about eight oclock I
awoke from sleep (you know, my beloved one, that I always like to sleep
for a short hour after my work is done)I awoke, I say, and,
lighting a candle, prepared my paper to write, and trimmed my pen. Then
suddenly, for some reason or another, I raised my eyesand felt my
very heart leap within me! For you had understood what I wanted, you had
understood what my heart was craving for. Yes, I perceived that a corner
of the curtain in your window had been looped up and fastened to the
cornice as I had suggested should be done; and it seemed to me that your
dear face was glimmering at the window, and that you were looking at me
from out of the darkness of your room, and that you were thinking of me.
Yet how vexed I felt that I could not distinguish your sweet face clearly!
For there was a time when you and I could see one another without any
difficulty at all. Ah me, but old age is not always a blessing, my beloved
one! At this very moment everything is standing awry to my eyes, for a man
needs only to work late overnight in his writing of something or other
for, in the morning, his eyes to be red, and the tears to be gushing from
them in a way that makes him ashamed to be seen before strangers. By torturing the natives to whom the
secret had been entrusted, the Spaniards made two or three discoveries,
but there can be little doubt that these finds were only a small
proportion of the total amount of the missing hoards, although for years
after their occupation of the country the Spaniards spared no pains and
hesitated at no cruelty to bring to light the hidden wealth. The story of
the boat which put to sea laden with treasure is historical, and it was
generally supposed that she was lost in a storm that took place soon after
she sailed. It was also morally certain that the Peruvians who left the
country when the Spaniards became masters carried off with them a very
large amount of treasure into that part of South America lying east of
Peru. Legends are current that they founded a great city there, and that
their descendants occupy it at the present time. But the forests are so
thick, and the Indian tribes so hostile, that the country has never yet
been explored, and it may be reserved for some future traveller,
possessing the determination of my two heroes, to clear up the mystery of
this city as they penetrated that of the lost treasure-ship. It need
hardly be said that the state of confusion, misrule, and incessant civil
wars which I have described as prevailing in Peru presents a true picture
of the country at the period in which this story is laid.

      G. During that gloomy epocha
it
was difficult to find occupations which might cheat the days of
calamity of
their weary length. Society had vanished; and amidst the minute
vexations
of Jacobinical despotism, which, while it murdered in mass,
persecuted in
detail, the resources of writing, and even reading, were encompassed
with
danger. The researches of domiciliary visits had already compelled me
to
commit to the flames a manuscript volume, where I had traced the
political
scenes of which I had been a witness, with the colouring of their first
impressions on my mind, with those fresh tints that fade from
recollection;
and since my pen, accustomed to follow the impulse of my feelings,
could
only have drawn, at that fatal period, those images of desolation and
despair which haunted my imagination, and dwelt upon my heart, writing
was
forbidden employment. Even reading had its perils; for books had
sometimes
aristocratical insignia, and sometimes counter revolutionary allusions;
and
when the administrators of police happened to think the writer a
conspirator, they punished the reader as his accomplice.
In this situation I gave myself the task of employing a few hours
every day
in translating the charming little novel of Bernardin St. Pierre,
entitled
"Paul and Virginia;" and I found the most soothing relief in wandering
from
my own gloomy reflections to those enchanting scenes of the Mauritius,
which he has so admirably described. I also composed a few Sonnets
adapted
to the peculiar productions of that part of the globe, which are
interspersed in the work. Some, indeed, are lost, as well as a part of
the
translation, which I have since supplied, having been sent to the
Municipality of Paris, in order to be examined as English papers; where
they still remain, mingled with revolutionary placards, motions, and
harangues; and are not likely to be restored to my possession.
With respect to the translation, I can only hope to deserve the
humble
merit of not having deformed the beauty of the original. I have,
indeed,
taken one liberty with my author, which it is fit I should acknowledge,
that of omitting several pages of general observations, which, however
excellent in themselves, would be passed over with impatience by the
English reader, when they interrupt the pathetic narrative. In this
respect, the two nations seem to change characters; and while the
serious
and reflecting Englishman requires, in novel writing, as well as on the
theatre, a rapid succession of incidents, much bustle and stage effect,
without suffering the author to appear himself, and stop the progress
of
the story; the gay and restless Frenchman listens attentively to long
philosophical reflections, while the catastrophe of the drama hangs in
suspense.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 10859
Author: Saint-Pierre, Bernardin de
Release Date: Jan 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Translator: Williams, Helen Maria, 1762-1827

A Reputed Changeling; Or, Three Seventh Years Two Centuries Ago

I do not think I have here forced the hand of history except by giving
Portchester to two imaginary Rectors, and by a little injustice to her
whom Princess Anne termed the brick-bat woman.
The trial is not according to present rules, but precedents for its
irregularities are to be found in the doings of the seventeenth century,
notably in the trial of Spencer Cowper by the same Judge Hatsel, and
I have done my best to represent the habits of those country gentry
who were not infected by the evils of the later Stewart reigns.
There is some doubt as to the proper spelling of Portchester, but,
judging by analogy, the t ought not to be omitted.
C. My mother drew nigh to me and whispered, "My dear
Clara, your papa is dying." With a frightened cry, I threw my arms
around her neck, and begged her to tell me what had happened. I was
unable to comprehend the meaning of her words. Since my earliest
recollection, my father had never experienced a day's illness, and so
the reader may be able to form some idea of the shock occasioned by her
wordsuttered, as they were, at the hour of midnight. When my mother
had succeeded in soothing me, in some degree, to calmness, she informed
me, in a voice choked with sobs, which, for my sake, she tried to
suppress, that my father had, two hours since, been stricken with
apoplexy, in so severe a form that his life was despaired of. She
further informed me that his attending physician thought he would not
live to see the light of another [Pg2]morning. Well do I remember the nervous
terror with which I clung to my mother as we entered my father's
apartment, and the icy chill which diffused itself over my body, as I
gazed upon the fearfully changed features of my father. I had never
before seen death in any form. I believe the first view of death is more
or less terrible to every child; it certainly was terrible for me to
first view death imprinted upon the countenance of a fond father. I have
ever since thought that my father recognized me when my mother led me to
his bed-side; but power of utterance was gone. It was a fearful trial to
me, who had seen but ten years of life. After the first shock, a strange
calm took possession of me. Though many years have passed since that
period, I remember, as though it were but yesterday, how I sat during
those long hours, scarcely for an instant removing my eyes from my
father's face, but shed not a tear; for, after the first burst of grief,
tears refused to come to my relief. Just as the day began to dawn I
heard the physician say, in a whisper, to a kind neighbor who stood by,
I think he is going. At that moment my father opened his eyes, and,
looking upward with a pleasant smile, expired without a struggle. I
could never clearly remember how I passed the intervening days between
my father's death and burial. I have an indistinct recollection of the
hushed voices and soft footsteps of friends and neighbors, who kindly
came to aid in performing the last offices of love and friendship to the
remains of my departed father. I [Pg3]also remember being led by my almost
heart-broken mother into the darkened room, where lay the lifeless body
of my father, now prepared for the grave; but I have a more vivid
recollection of standing with my mother beside an open grave, and
hearing our pastor, in a solemn voice, utter the words, "Earth to
earthashes to ashesdust to dust." Oh! the falling of that first
earth upon my father's coffin, shall I ever forget the sound? Child as I
was, it seemed to me that my heart would break; but tears, the first I
had shed since my father's death, came to my relief. Those blessed
tears. I may well call them blessed, since the physician afterwards told
my mother that they saved either my reason or my life. Kind friends
besought my mother and me to allow ourselves to be conveyed home and not
await the filling up of the grave. But no. We could not leave the spot
till the last earth was thrown upon the grave, and a mound covered with
grassy sods was to be seen, where a little before was only a mournful
cavity. Then indeed we felt that he was gone, and that we must return to
our desolate homethe home which ever before his presence had filled
with joy and gladness.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 18181
Author: Caswell, Harriet S.
Release Date: Apr 15, 2006
Format: eBook
Language: English

Anne of Green Gables

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 19576
Author: Montgomery, L. He and I are old friendswe grew up together in the same
Nebraska townand we had much to say to each other. While the
train flashed through never-ending miles of ripe wheat, by country
towns and bright-flowered pastures and oak groves wilting in the sun,
we sat in the observation car, where the woodwork was hot to the touch
and red dust lay deep over everything. The dust and heat, the burning
wind, reminded us of many things. We were talking about what it is
like to spend ones childhood in little towns like these, buried
in wheat and corn, under stimulating extremes of climate: burning
summers when the world lies green and billowy beneath a brilliant sky,
when one is fairly stifled in vegetation, in the color and smell of
strong weeds and heavy harvests; blustery winters with little snow,
when the whole country is stripped bare and gray as sheet-iron. We
agreed that no one who had not grown up in a little prairie town[pg x]
could know anything about it. He is legal counsel
for one of the great Western railways, and is sometimes away from his
New York office for weeks together. That is one reason why we do not
often meet. Another is that I do not like his wife.
When Jim was still an obscure young lawyer,
struggling to make his way in New York, his career was suddenly
advanced by a brilliant marriage. Genevieve Whitney was the only
daughter of a distinguished man. Her marriage with young Burden was
the subject of sharp comment at the time. It was said she had been
brutally jilted by her cousin, Rutland Whitney, and that she married
this unknown man from the West out of bravado. She was a restless,
headstrong girl, even then, who liked to astonish her friends. Later,
when I knew her, she was always doing something unexpected. She gave
one of her town houses for a Suffrage headquarters, produced one of
her own plays at the Princess Theater, was arrested for picketing
during a garment-makers strike, etc. I am never
able to believe that she has much feeling for the causes to which she
lends her name and her fleeting interest. She is handsome, energetic,[pg xi]
executive, but to me she seems unimpressionable and temperamentally
incapable of enthusiasm. Her husbands quiet tastes irritate
her, I think, and she finds it worth while to play the patroness to a
group of young poets and painters of advanced ideas and mediocre
ability. One of our fellows who had lately taken his degree and passed as Senior Wrangler had asked it for us. He had just come down for a few hours to see the Doctor and the old place. How we cheered him! How proudly the Doctor looked at him! What a great man we thought him! He was a great man! for he had won a great victory, not only over his fellow-men, not only over his books, by compelling them to give up the knowledge they contained, but over his love of pleasure; over a tendency to indolence; over his temper and passions; and now Henry Martin was able to commence the earnest struggle of life with the consciousness, which of itself gives strength, that he had obtained the most important of all victoriesthat over self.
There he stood, surrounded by some of the bigger boys who had been at school with him; a pleasant smile on his countenance as he looked about him on the old familiar scenes. Then he shook hands with the fellows standing near him, and we all cheered again louder than ever. He thanked us, and said that he hoped he should often meet many of us in the world, and that he should always look back with pleasure to the days he had spent in that place. Chester Rand was the son of a widow, who lived in a tiny cottage about fifty rods west of the Presbyterian church, of which, by the way, Silas Tripp was senior deacon, for he was a leader in religious as well as secular affairs.
Chesters father had died of pneumonia about four years before the story commences, leaving his widow the cottage and about two hundred and fifty dollars.
vastaaville ajankohdille koko ihmiskunnan historiassa, sislsivt
Ranskan historiaan nhden harvinaisen jyrkki kehityksenknteit; ensin
vaihtuvata naamiaishuvia. Kaiken tmn kirjavan kehityksen kuvastaa
samanaikainen kirjallisuus verrattoman selviss peilikuvissa. Ludvig
silminnhtvll tarkotuksella koettaa enent "aurinkokuninkaan"
hallituksen loistoa. Vaan tmn aikakauden loppupuoliskolla, kun
luonnottomasti keskitetty hallitustapa vei maan arveluttavaan
ulkonaiseen ja sislliseen ahdinkoon, rupeaa ivan ja arvostelun
pukinjalka pistmn esiin kirjallisuudessa; Corneillen ja Racinen
sirotyylisen vaan hengettmn draaman sijalle astui porvarillinen
runous, jonka etevin edustaja Molire ruoski teennisen hovisivistyksen
pnkeit muotoja ja epsuorasti ylisti maan elinvoimaisen keskiluokan
tervett henke. Ludvig XV:nnen hallituskautena ennen alkanut
tapainturmelus hllytti kaikki yhteiskuntaa koossapitvt siteet ja
kehitti nurinpuolisuudet huippuunsa. Tm sekaannuksen aika synnytti
(Crebillon nuorempi, Gresset y. m.). Mutta toiselta puolen se
voimakkaissa hengiss hertti eloon uusia, positiivisia harrastuksia,
sijaan luomista. Valistus-filosofia katkoi kahleet kaikilla ajatuksen
aloilla, keskell Ancien Rgimen valokohdista kyh ja varjopuolista
kammottavan rikasta aikakautta se kohotti ihmisten aatokset tapailemaan
todellisuutta, luonnollisuutta ja ylev siveytt. Hertys tapahtui
Kanavan toiselta puolen; tutustuminen Englannin vapaisiin oloihin,
terveihin yhteiskuntamuotoihin ja siell silloin vallassa olevaan
herkktunteiseen, romantilliseen kirjallisuuteen (De Foen "Robinson
Crusoeen" ja Richardsonin siveysromaaneihin) mahtavasti vaikutti Ranskan
henkisiin vallankumousmiehiin, Montesquieuhn, Voltaireen, Diderot'hon
ja Rousseauhon. Molempain viimemainittujen kaunokirjalliset teokset
sislsivt vaatimuksia tunteen, luonnollisuuden ja yksilllisyyden
ylevmmyydest silloisten elmn valhemuotojen rinnalla. Ludvig XVI:nnen
aikakautena viimein purkautuvat tten synnytetyt shkiset voimat.
Tietoisuus krsityist vryyksist ja nurinpuolisuuksista synnytti
yhtll tulisinta mielenkiihkoa, salaman tavoin vlhtvi aavistuksia
mullistuksia. Kyllstyminen vallassa oleviin kulttuurimuotoihin ja
ajatustapoihin ynn hellmielinen taipumus etsimn turmelemattoman
luonnon helmasta terveit, ehji elmnmuotoja johti ranskalaisen
runouden romantillisuuden rikkaalle, usein liiaksikin rajainsa yli
riuhtovalle uralle, jonka Rousseau "Uudella Heloisellaan" ja
"milelln" oli perustanut. Romantillista harrastusta lissi Ranskan
siirtomaavallan erinomainen vaurastuminen, joka knsi haaveilijain
huomion merentakaisiin maihin, ranskalaisten miesten nin aikoina
suurella menestyksell suorittamat klassillisen muinaisuuden tutkimukset
(Pompeijin esiinkaivaminen) ja antiikin tyylin jljitteleminen kuvaavien
taiteiden alalla (Davidin maalauskoulu ja Pantonin rakentaminen).
Tyypillinen edustaja tlle kahden maailmanhistoriallisen ajanjakson
vlill seisovalle, herkkmieliselle ja ihanteelliselle sukupolvelle on
ksissmme olevan "Paul ja Virginia"-idyllin kirjottaja.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 28661
Author: Saint-Pierre, Bernardin de
Release Date: May 2, 2009
Format: eBook
Language: Finnish

Contributors

Translator: Joutsen, O. The sailors ran hither and thither, the sails were
loosed and the yards braced. The clanking of the windlass soon told
that the anchor was being raised.
Whew! I never saw so much excitement and hurry in all my
life, exclaimed a boy, who with three companions stood on the
deck of the brig and looked on at these activities without actually
taking part in them themselves. The speaker was Fred Button. He was a
tiny little fellow, known affectionately among his friends as Stub, or
Peewee or Pygmy.
Je me suis mis
n'ai donc pas me plaindre.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 33808
Author: Fromentin, Eugène
Release Date: Sep 24, 2010
Format: eBook
Language: French

The Ranch Girls and Their Great Adventure

"I don't know that I agree with you, Olive.
Of course that is what people from home
always say. Eine
Liste der vorgenommenen nderungen findet sich
am Ende des Textes.
Der Band bringt die ersten Dichtungen Dostojewskis:
den Briefroman der Armen Leute und die
Petersburger Geschichte, wie Dostojewski sie ausdrcklich
nannte, vom Doppelgnger.
Schon in
konnte. The long-boat was
comfortable and well appointed, and there was even room enough in it
for Mr. Enderton to stretch himself out and take a noonday nap. We
[Pg 8]gave him every advantage of this kind, for we had found by experience
that our party was happiest when my father-in-law was best contented.
Early in the forenoon the coxswain rigged a small sail in the bow of
the boat, and with this aid to our steady and systematic work at the
oars we reached, just before nightfall, the large island whither we
were bound, and to which, by means of the coxswain's pocket-compass,
we had steered a direct course. Our arrival on this island, which was
inhabited by some white traders and a moderate population of natives,
occasioned great surprise, for when the boats containing the crew and
passengers of our unfortunate steamer had reached the island, it was
found that Mrs. Lecks, Mrs. Aleshine, and myself were missing. There
were many suppositions as to our fate. Some persons thought we had
been afraid to leave the steamer, and, having secreted ourselves on
board, had gone down with her. Others conjectured that in the darkness
we had fallen overboard, either from the steamer or from one of the
boats; and there was even a surmise that we might have embarked in the
leaky small boatin which we really did leave the steamerand so had
been lost. At any rate, we had disappeared, and our loss was a good
deal talked about, and, in a manner, mourned. In less than a week
[Pg 9]after their arrival the people from the steamer had been taken on
board a sailing vessel and carried westward to their destination.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 35480
Author: Stockton, Frank Richard
Release Date: Mar 4, 2011
Format: eBook
Language: English

How John Norton the Trapper Kept His Christmas

A cabin. It was
difficult to recognize that May had actually
arrived; the air had a February chill in it;
and the heavy, leaden sky and ceaseless
downpour of steady rain made the few passers-by
shiver; now and then a lawyer's clerk
hurried along, uttering a sort of dumb protest
in his raised shoulders and turned-up
collar. In that quiet spot the drip of the
water from the roofs was distinctly audible,
alternating with the splash of the rain on
the stone flags of the court. Mr. Harland
glanced at the letters lying on his table, then
he walked up to the fire-place, and spread
his white, well-shaped hands over the cheerful
blaze.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 48228
Author: Carey, Rosa Nouchette
Release Date: Feb 10, 2015
Format: eBook
Language: English

Annan nuoruusvuodet

I. But it isnt short at all, for
its merely whats left of Marcus Aurelius
Fortunatus Tidd, which was what he was
christened, mostly out of Gibbons Decline and
Fall of the Roman Empire, a big book that
Mr. Tidd was so fond of reading that he never
read much of anything else except the papers.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 57165
Author: Kelland, Clarence Budington
Release Date: May 15, 2018
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Illustrator: Clarke, William Wallace

The Land of Content

It was earliest spring, and almost the close of a day
whose sunshine and warmth had coaxed into
bloom many timid roadside flowers, and sent the
white petals of farmyard cherries trembling to earth
like tiny, belated snowfalls. Already the rays of the
setting sun were gilding the open space on the top of
the mountain where ridge-road and turnpike meet.
The ridge-road was only one of the little mountain
by-ways that wind through woods and up and down
dale as the necessities of the mountain people wear
them; the turnpike was an ancient artery connecting
North and South, threading cities and villages and
farms along its length like trophies on a chain. The
shy windings of the mountain road knew nothing
more modern than the doctor's vehicle drawn by
White Rosy, nothing more exciting than the little
companies of armed, silent men who tramped over it
by night, or crossed it stealthily by day; but along the
pike coaches and motor cars pounded and rolled, and
a generation or so earlier an army had swung northward
over it in pride and hope and eagerness, to drift
southward again, a few days later, with only pride
left. If, after that, the part of the old road that led
from the plain up to the higher valley seemed to lie
in a torpor, as if stunned by the agony of that retreat,
none the less it remained one of the strong warp
threads in Fate's fabric.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 58680
Author: Delano, Edith Barnard
Release Date: Jan 13, 2019
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Illustrator: Henry, J

Legend

We ourselves have never joined in the chorus of
praise that, a decade ago, greeted the appearance
of Eden Walls and its successors, and in our
opinion Miss Serle, in her biographical enthusiasm,
uses the word genius a little too often and too
easily. Madala Grey has yet to be tried by that
subtlest of literary critics, the Man with the
Scythe. But whether or not we agree with Miss
Serles estimate of her heroine, there can be no
two questions as to the literary value of the Life
itself. It definitely places Miss Serle among the
Boswells, and as we close its fascinating pages we
find ourselves wondering whether our grandchildren
will remember Miss Serle as the biographer of
Madala Grey, or Madala Grey as the subject matter
merely, of a chronicle that has become a classic.
That is to sayLa reine est morte. Vive la
reine! Anita will certainly be pleased. Well, I
suppose shes got what she wants, what shes always
wanted. She isnt a woman to change. The new
portrait in the Bookman might have been taken
when I knew her: the mouths a trifle harder, the
hair a trifle greyer; but no real change. But it
amuses me that there should be her portrait in all
the papers, and none of Madala Grey; not even in
the Life itself.
