It is
so divinable, if not so perceptible, that its presence may usually be
recognized as a beginning of the turn in every tide which is sure, sooner
or later, to come. In reform, it is the menace of reaction; in reaction,
it is the promise of reform; we may take heart as we must lose heart from
it. A few years ago, when a movement which carried fiction to the highest
place in literature was apparently of such onward and upward sweep that
there could be no return or descent, there was a counter-current in it
which stayed it at last, and pulled it back to that lamentable level where
fiction is now sunk, and the word "novel" is again the synonym of all that
is morally false and mentally despicable. Yet that this, too, is partly
apparent, I think can be shown from some phases of actual fiction which
happen to be its very latest phases, and which are of a significance as
hopeful as it is interesting. Quite as surely as romanticism lurked at the
heart of realism, something that we may call "psychologism" has been
present in the romanticism of the last four or five years, and has now
begun to evolve itself in examples which it is the pleasure as well as the
duty of criticism to deal with.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 726
Author: Howells, William Dean
Release Date: Nov 1, 1996
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/726_67f71a0f-681a-4618-8adb-213459989102.jpg?v=1671248690
the-lock-and-key-library-the-most-interesting-stories-of-all-nations-north-europe-russian-swedish-danish-hungarian-gb-1552
The Lock and Key Library: The Most Interesting Stories of All Nations: North Europe — Russian — Swedish — Danish — Hungarian

The Lock and Key Library: The Most Interesting Stories of All Nations: North Europe — Russian — Swedish — Danish — Hungarian

Please take a look at the important information in this header.
We encourage you to keep this file on your own disk, keeping an
electronic path open for the next readers. If Baron de Tott
dauntlessly discharged an enormous piece of artillery, the Baron
Munchausen has done more; he has taken it and swam with it across the sea.
When travellers are solicitous to be the heroes of their own story, surely
they must admit to superiority, and blush at seeing themselves out-done by
the renowned Munchausen: I doubt whether any one hitherto, Pantagruel,
Gargantua, Captain Lemuel, or De Tott, has been able to out-do our Baron
in this species of excellence: and as at present our curiosity seems much
directed to the interior of Africa, it must be edifying to have the real
relation of Munchausen's adventures there before any further intelligence
arrives; for he seems to adapt himself and his exploits to the spirit of
the times, and recounts what he thinks should be most interesting to his
      auditors.

I do not say that the Baron, in the following stories, means a satire on
any political matters whatever. No; but if the reader understands them so,
      I cannot help it.

If the Baron meets with a parcel of negro ships carrying whites into
slavery to work upon their plantations in a cold climate, should we
therefore imagine that he intends a reflection on the present traffic in
human flesh? And that, if the negroes should do so, it would be simple
justice, as retaliation is the law of God! If we were to think this a
reflection on any present commercial or political matter, we should be
tempted to imagine, perhaps, some political ideas conveyed in every page,
in every sentence of the whole. It professed to be sunny, and there was
really some sort of hard glitter in the air, which, so far from being
tempered by this effulgence, seemed all the stonier for it. Blasts of
frigid wind swept the streets, and buffeted each other in a fury of
resentment when they met around the corners. Although I was passing
through a populous tenement-house quarter, my way was not hindered by the
sports of the tenement-house children, who commonly crowd one from the
sidewalks; no frowzy head looked out over the fire-escapes; there were no
peddlers carts or voices in the road-way; not above three or four
shawl-hooded women cowered out of the little shops with small purchases in
their hands; not so many tiny girls with jugs opened the doors of the beer
saloons. The butchers windows were painted with patterns of frost,
through which I could dimly see the frozen meats hanging like hideous
stalactites from the roof. When I came to the river, I ached in sympathy
with the shipping painfully atilt on the rocklike surface of the brine,
which broke against the piers, and sprayed itself over them like showers
      of powdered quartz.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 3379
Author: Howells, William Dean
Release Date: Oct 22, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/3379_c6543a9d-6046-4264-804b-eea5cd34d10e.jpg?v=1671255760
in-the-sweet-dry-and-dry-gb-4249
In the Sweet Dry and Dry

In the Sweet Dry and Dry

As far as this book is concerned, the public may Take It, or the public
may Let It Alone. Wishing you a Merry Abstinence,
and looking forward to meeting you some day in Europe,

Dunraven Bleak, the managing editor of The Evening Balloon, sat at his
desk in the center of the local-room, under a furious cone of electric
light. It was six o'clock of a warm summer afternoon: he was filling
his pipe and turning over the pages of the Final edition of the paper,
which had just come up from the press-room. After the turmoil of the
day the room had quieted, most of the reporters had left, and the
shaded lamps shone upon empty tables and a floor strewn ankle-deep with
papers. Nearby sat the city editor, checking over the list of
assignments for the next morning. Every tree and plant had been brought from foreign climes; he was
such a fellow for collecting the curiosities of Nature, this wonderful
Tartarin. His garden boasted, for instance, an example of the baobab, that
giant of the vegetable world, but Tartarin's specimen was only big enough
to occupy a mignonette pot. He was mightily proud of it, all the same.
The great sight of his place, however, was the hero's private den at the
bottom of the garden. Picture to yourself a large hall gleaming from top to
bottom with firearms and weapons of all sorts: carbines, rifles,
blunderbusses, bowie-knives, revolvers, daggers, flint-arrows--in a word,
examples of the deadly weapons of all races used by man in all parts of the
world. Everything was neatly arranged, and labelled as if it were in a
public museum. "Poisoned Arrows. Please do not touch!" was the warning on
one of the cards. "Weapons loaded. Alma Lee, the coachman's handsome young daughter, is toiling up a
steep hill overlooking Chalkburne, tired and laden with parcels from the
town. As she leans on a gate, Judkins, a fellow-servant of her father's,
drives up in a smart dog-cart, and offers her a lift home. She refuses
scornfully, to the young groom's mortification; he drives off, hurt by her
coquetry and prophesying that pride goes before a fall.
Then a sound of bells is heard--a waggon drawn by a fine bell-team
climbs the hill, and stops by Alma. She accepts the waggoner's offer of a
lift, and on reaching the gate of her home in the dusk, is distressed by
his insistence on a kiss in payment, when out of the tree-shadows steps
Cyril Maitland, the graceful and gifted son of the rector of Malbourne,
newly ordained deacon.
He rebukes the waggoner, rescues Alma, and escorts her across a field to
her father's cottage. There he is welcomed with respectful affection as the
rector's son and Alma's former playmate. Afterwards she lights him to the
gate, where a chance word of his evokes from her an innocent and
unconscious betrayal of her secret love, kindling such strong response in
him as he cannot conquer except by touching a letter in his breast-pocket.
This letter is from Marion Everard, to whom he has been a year engaged.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 10993
Author: Hammerton, J. A girl of a little more than seventeen, slight and rather
tall, with a countenance rather sensitive and melancholy, was sitting at
the tea-table in a reverie. The son of
a London glass merchant, Peacock was born at Weymouth on October 18, 1785.
Early in life he was engaged in some mercantile occupation, which, however,
he did not follow up for long. Then came a period of study, and he became
an excellent classical scholar. His first ambition was to become a poet,
and between 1804 and 1806 he published two slender volumes of verse, which
attracted little or no attention. Yet Peacock was a poet of considerable
merit, his best work in this direction being scattered at random throughout
his novels. In 1812 he contracted a friendship with Shelley, whose executor
he became with Lord Byron. Peacock's first novel, "Headlong Hall," appeared
in 1816, and is interesting not so much as a story pure and simple, but as
a study of the author's own temperament. His personalities are seldom real
live characters; they are, rather, mouthpieces created for the purposes of
discussion. Peacock died on January 23, 1866.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 11527
Author: Hammerton, J. Nello was a
little Ardennois,Patrasche was a big Fleming. They were both of the
same age by length of years, yet one was still young, and the other was
already old. They had dwelt together almost all their days; both were
orphaned and destitute, and owed their lives to the same hand. It had
been the beginning of the tie between them, their first bond of
sympathy; and it had strengthened day by day, and had grown with their
growth, firm and indissoluble, until they loved one another very greatly.
Their home was a little hut on the edge of a little village,a Flemish
village a league from Antwerp, set amidst flat breadths of pasture and
corn-lands, with long lines of poplars and of alders bending in the
breeze on the edge of the great canal which ran through it. It had about
a score of houses and homesteads, with shutters of bright green or
sky-blue, and roofs rose-red or black and white, and walls whitewashed
until they shone in the sun like snow. In the centre of the village
stood a windmill, placed on a little moss-grown slope; it was a landmark
to all the level country round. It had once been painted scarlet, sails
and all, but that had been in its infancy, half a century or more
earlier, when it had ground wheat for the soldiers of Napoleon; and it
was now a ruddy brown, tanned by wind and weather. It went queerly by
fits and starts, as though rheumatic and stiff in the joints from age,
but it served the whole neighborhood, which would have thought it almost
as impious to carry grain elsewhere, as to attend any other religious
service than the mass that was performed at the altar of the little old
gray church, with its conical steeple, which stood opposite to it, and
whose single bell rang morning, noon, and night with that strange,
subdued, hollow sadness which every bell that hangs in the Low Countries
seems to gain as an integral part of its melody.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 15933
Author: Johnson, Rossiter
Release Date: May 29, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Johnson, Rossiter, 1840-1931

Tales from Many Sources, Vol. V

Lob Lie-By-The-Firethe Lubber-fiend, as Milton calls himis a rough
kind of Brownie or House Elf, supposed to haunt some north-country
homesteads, where he does the work of the farm labourers, for no grander
wages than
It was said that a Lob Lie-by-the-fire once haunted the little old Hall
at Lingborough. Nothing, no power, will keep
a book steady and motionless before us, so that we may have time to
examine its shape and design. As quickly as we read, it melts and
shifts in the memory; even at the moment when the last page is turned,
a great part of the book, its finer detail, is already vague and
doubtful. A little later, after a few days or months, how much is
really left of it? A cluster of impressions, some clear points
emerging from a mist of uncertainty, this is all we can hope to
possess, generally speaking, in the name of a book. The experience of
reading it has left something behind, and these relics we call by the
book's name; but how can they be considered to give us the material
for judging and appraising the book? Nobody would venture to criticize
a building, a statue, a picture, with nothing before him but the
memory of a single glimpse caught in passing;[2] yet the critic of
literature, on the whole, has to found his opinion upon little more.
Sometimes it is possible to return to the book and renew the
impression; to a few books we may come back again and again, till they
do in the end become familiar sights. But of the hundreds and hundreds
of books that a critic would wish to range in his memory, in order to
scrutinize and compare them reflectively, how many can he expect to
bring into a state of reasonable stability? His
early education was acquired first at home under his father, the rector
of Birkin, then at Rugby, where he was sent at the age of fourteen. In
1855 he entered Balliol College, Oxford, and came under the influence of
Jowett, afterwards famous as Master of Balliol and translator of Plato.
Though he matured early, Green was not a brilliant student. On the
contrary, he appeared to be indolent and sluggish. "No man," wrote one
of his fellow-students in 1862, "is driven with greater difficulty to
work not to his taste.... He wrote some of the best college essays: he
never sent them in on the right day, and might generally be seen on the
Monday pondering over essays which every one else had sent in on the
Friday night." These traits, however, as it proved later, were the index
not of a vagrant mind, but of independence of thought and of
preoccupation with weightier matters. To quote again from the tribute of
a fellow-student: "On everything he said or wrote there was stamped the
impress of[Pg 10] a forcible individuality, a mind that thought for itself,
and whose thoughts had the rugged strength of an original character
wherein grimness was mingled with humor, and practical shrewdness with a
love for abstract speculation." In the end, his solid qualities of mind
and character made so strong an impression upon the University
authorities that in 1860 he was elected fellow of Balliol. At the same
time he became lecturer on ancient and modern history. Though from the
beginning of his student life he had been drawn to an academic career
and especially to the study of philosophy, he was now for a period
undecided what to make his life-work. At one time he thought of going
into journalism in India. In 1864, having accepted a place with the
Royal Commission on Middle Class Schools, he prepared a valuable report
upon the organization of high schools and their relation to the
university. Finally, however, in 1866, his indecision was brought to an
end. Obtaining an appointment in that year to a position on the teaching
staff of Balliol College, he settled down to the work of a tutor in
philosophy. When Jowett was made Master of Balliol, Green became, under
him, the responsible manager of the college, performing the manifold
small duties of the position with patience, thoroughness, and tact.
In 1871 he was married to Miss Charlotte Symonds, sister of John Addington Symonds.
[Pg 11]Twice Green was candidate for a professorship; once in 1864 when he
applied for the chair of moral philosophy at St. Andrews, and again in
1867 when the Waynflate professorship of moral and metaphysical
philosophy fell vacant at Oxford. In both cases he was unsuccessful. It
was not until 1878, by his election to the Whyte's professorship of
moral philosophy, that he obtained the position and the independence he
had long deserved. His enjoyment of the honor was brief. He died of
blood-poisoning, after an illness of only ten days, March 26, 1882.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 20843
Author: Green, Thomas Hill
Release Date: Mar 17, 2007
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Scott, Fred Newton, 1860-1931

Character Sketches of Romance, Fiction and the Drama, Vol. 3\r - A Revised American Edition of the Reader's Handbook

A number of typographical errors have been maintained
in the current version of this book. Niinp vanha Ransonin kislli, Richard Hayes hyvin
mielellns katseli mestarinsa tytrt, kuuli hnen puhuvan ja vaihti
hnen kanssansa muutamia sanoja tosiaankin paljoa mieluisemmin kuin
vanha herra ja ylipns kukaan muukaan saattoi uneksia, paitsi tytr ja
kislli itse. Mit vanha Ranson olisi tehnyt, jos hn olisi tmn
aavistanut, sit en tied. Mutta luultavasti olisi hn antanut
kisllille kelpo selksaunan ja tm kentiesi olisi yrittnyt
vastarintaa. Kuinka lieneekin, melkein varmana pidn, ettei rakkaus sen
kautta olisi sammunut, vaan pinvastoin kynyt viel kiihkemmksi.
Nmt arvelut siksens, palatkaamme kertomukseemme. Kisllin elm ei
ollut hupainen, sill vanha Ransonin ksitteet siit, miten kisllej
piti soveliaasti kohteleman, olivat perityt kuningas Elisabetin
kunnian-rikkaista ajoista ja olivat sitten kalliina perintn kulkeneet
pitkn esi-issarjan kautta, kunnes olivat sijaantuneet Ransonin
pkalloon. Hn uskoi, ett kaikissa kislleiss on auttamaton
luonnollinen taipumus korttien-lyntiin, ryyppmiseen sek
kaikenlaiseen muuhun rentustelemiseen. Hn uskoi ett, jos ei mestarien
silm ollut alituisesti heit valvomassa, he heittisivt tyns
hunningolle, rystisivt raha-laatikon ja tekisivt kaiken maailman
rosvotit. Tt satulamaakarimme lujaa uskoa eivt saattaneet mitkn
todistelemiset kumota.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 23793
Author: Various
Release Date: Dec 10, 2007
Format: eBook
Language: Finnish

Eastern Tales by Many Story Tellers

n compiling this volume of Eastern Tales, the Editor has been careful
to select only those best suited to youthful readers. They have been
gathered from both ancient and modern, French, Italian, and English
sources, and therefore offer great variety of style and subject.
In the stories taken from the Tales of the Genii, an omission of a few
words has been made, to fit them for their place in this volume.

[1]
nce upon a time there lived in the city of Bagdad a young man called
Jalaladdeen. It was not his native place; but, in his early days, his
father had taken up his abode there. He was, however, little
acquainted with the town, in which he had grown up a sturdy youth; for
his father inhabited a small house in one of the suburbs, and lived a
very retired and frugal life. They managed[2] their household affairs,
and cultivated their small garden, without the aid of any domestics.
One day the father, feeling his end approaching, called for his son
once more to his bed-side before his death, and said to him,
"Jalaladdeen, my dearest son, thou seest that I have arrived at the
bourne of my earthly career: now I should joyously quit this life,
were it not for the thought that I must leave thee here alone. After
my death, thou wilt find that thou are not so poor as thou mayest have
conceived, and that too with good reason, from our hitherto contracted
habits of life. Nevertheless, guard against the impression that thou
art in possession of inexhaustible riches. Reflect that a year has
three hundred and sixty-five days, and that the smallest expenditure,
when it occurs daily, will in the end amount to no inconsiderable sum.
Pay careful heed, therefore, to these my instructions, and be
contented with the necessaries of life. Provide that which is
indispensable to thy subsistence; but beware of purchasing
superfluities. Man's wants increase daily, if he do not accustom
himself in his early days to practise self-denial. But shouldest thou
ever be so unhappy as to neglect these my sincere cautions, and
consequently fall into poverty, I have only this piece of advice left
for thee:Take this rope, fasten it to the nail in yonder wall, and
pull stoutly three times."
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 26358
Author: Valentine, L. Alles
vollendet in dem Sinn und vollendet fr die Sinne;
rund, weil die Seele in sich ruht whrend des Handelns;
Zeiten keine Philosophie, oder, was dasselbe besagt,
alle Menschen dieser Zeiten sind Philosophen, Inhaber
des utopischen Zieles jeder Philosophie. Denn was ist
mu. The reasons for this apparently arbitrary preference on
the part of authors are perfectly easy to explain. The instinctive acts
of the dog, who is a company-loving brute, are very human; his
psychology on occasion is almost human. He often behaves as a man would
behave. It is therefore a comparatively simple matter to insert a dog
into a story about men, for he can often carry it along after the
fashion of a human character.
But, as Andrew Lang has so well observed, literature can never take a
thing simply for what it is worth. "The plain-dealing dog must be
distinctly bored by the ever-growing obligation to live up to the
anecdotes of him.... These anecdotes are not told for his sake; they are
told to save the self-respect of people who want an idol, and who are
distorting him into a figure of pure convention for their domestic
altars. He is now expected to discriminate between relations and mere
friends of the house; to wag his tail at God Save the Queen; to count
up to five in chips of fire-wood, and to seven in mutton bones; to howl
for all deaths in the family above the degree of second cousin; to post
letters, and refuse them when they have been insufficiently stamped; and
last, and most intolerable, to show a tender solicitude when tabby is
out of sorts." The[Pg x] dog, indeed, for the most part, has become as
sentimental and conventional a figure in current fiction as the ghost
who haunts the ouija board or the idealistic soldier returned from the
wars to reconstruct his own country.
Now the cat, independent, liberty-loving, graceful, strong, resourceful,
dignified, and self-respecting, has a psychology essentially feline,
which has few points of contact with human psychology. The cat does not
rescue babies from drowning or say his prayers in real life;
consequently any attempt to make him do so in fiction would be
ridiculous. He has, to be sure, his own virtues. To me these are
considerably greater than those of any other animal. But the fact
remains that the satisfactory treatment of the cat in fiction requires
not only a deep knowledge of but also a deep affection for the sphinx of
the fireside. Even then the difficulties can only be met in part, for
the novelist must devise a situation in which human and feline
psychology can be merged. The Egyptians probably could have written good
cat stories. Perhaps they did. I sometimes ponder over the possibility
of a cat room having been destroyed in the celebrated holocaust of
Alexandria. The folk and fairy tales devoted to the cat, of which there
are many, are based on an understanding, although often superficial, of
cat traits. But the moderns, speaking generally, have not been able to
do justice, in the novel or the short story, to this occult and lovable
little beast.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 30092
Author: Alden, W. But like other
parvenus it is still a little uncertain of its position in the
society in which it moves. It is a newcomer in the literary
world; and it has the self-assertiveness and the touchiness
natural to the situation. It brags of its descent,
although its origins are obscure. It has won its way to
the front and it has forced its admission into circles where
it was formerly denied access. It likes to forget that it
was once but little better than an outcast, unworthy
of recognition from those in authority. Perhaps it is
still uneasily conscious that not a few of those who were
born to good society may look at it with cold suspicion
as though it was still on sufferance.
Story-telling has always been popular, of course; and
the desire is deep-rooted in all of us to hear and to tell
some new thing and to tell again something deserving
remembrance. But the novel itself, and the short-story
also, must confess that they have only of late been able
to claim equality with the epic and the lyric, and with
comedy and tragedy, literary forms consecrated by antiquity.
There were nine muses in Greece of old, and
[pg x]
no one of these daughters of Apollo was expected to inspire
the writer of prose-fiction. Whoever had then a
story to tell, which he wished to treat artistically, never
dreamed of expressing it except in the nobler medium
of verse, in the epic, in the idyl, in the drama. Prose
seemed to the Greeks, and even to the Latins who followed
in their footsteps, as fit only for pedestrian purposes.
Even oratory and history were almost rhythmic;
and mere prose was too humble an instrument for those
whom the Muses cherished. The Alexandrian vignettes
of the gentle Theocritus may be regarded as anticipations
of the modern short-story of urban local color; but this
delicate idyllist used verse for the talk of his Tanagra
figurines.
Even when the modern languages entered into the
inheritance of Latin and Greek, verse held to its ancestral
privileges, and the brief tale took the form of the
ballad, and the longer narrative called itself a chanson
de geste. Boccaccio and Rabelais and Cervantes might
win immediate popularity and invite a host of imitators;
but it was long after their time before a tale in prose,
whether short or long, achieved recognition as worthy
of serious critical consideration. In his study of Balzac,
Brunetire recorded the significant fact that no novelist,
who was purely and simply a novelist, was elected to the
French Academy in the first two centuries of its existence.
And the same acute critic, in his "History of Classical
French Literature," pointed out that French novels were
under a cloud of suspicion even so far back as the days
of Erasmus, in 1525. It was many scores of years thereafter
before the self-appointed guardians of French
literature esteemed the novel highly enough to condescend
to discuss it.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 30776
Author: Hamilton, Clayton Meeker
Release Date: Dec 28, 2009
Format: eBook
Language: English

Devil Stories: An Anthology

Of all the myths which have come down to us from
the East, and of all the creations of Western fancy and
belief, the Personality of Evil has had the strongest
attraction for the mind of man. The Devil is the greatest
enigma that has ever confronted the human intelligence.
So large a place has Satan taken in our
imagination, and we might also say in our heart, that
his expulsion therefrom, no matter what philosophy may
teach us, must for ever remain an impossibility. As a
character in imaginative literature Lucifer has not his
equal in heaven above or on the earth beneath. In contrast
to the idea of Good, which is the more exalted in
proportion to its freedom from anthropomorphism, the
idea of Evil owes to the presence of this element its
chief value as a poetic theme. The discrowned archangel
may have been inferior to St. Michael in military
tactics, but he certainly is his superior in matters
literary. The fair angelsall frankness and goodnessare
beyond our comprehension, but the fallen
angels, with all their faults and sufferings, are kin to us.
There is a legend that the Devil has always had
literary aspirations. The German theosophist Jacob
Bhme relates that when Satan was asked to explain the
cause of Gods enmity to him and his consequent downfall,
he replied: I wanted to be an author.
Whether or not the Devil has ever written anything
over his own signature, he has certainly helped others[xii]
compose their greatest works. It is a significant fact
that the greatest imaginations have discerned an attraction
in Diabolus. What would the worlds literature be
if from it we eliminated Dantes Divine Comedy, Calderns
Marvellous Magician, Miltons Paradise Lost,
Goethes Faust, Byrons Cain, Vignys Eloa, and Lermontovs
Demon? Sorry indeed would have been the
plight of literature without a judicious admixture of the
Diabolical. Without the Devil there would simply be
no literature, because without his intervention there
would be no plot, and without a plot the story of the
world would lose its interest. Even now, when the belief
in the Devil has gone out of fashion, and when the
very mention of his name, far from causing men to cross
themselves, brings a smile to their faces, Satan has continued
to be a puissant personage in the realm of letters.
As a matter of fact, Beelzebub has perhaps received his
greatest elaboration at the hands of writers who believed
in him just as little as Shakespeare did in the
ghost of Hamlets father.
Commenting on Anatole Frances The Revolt of the
Angels, an American critic has recently written: It
is difficult to rehabilitate Beelzebub, not because people
are of one mind concerning Beelzebub, but because
they are of no mind at all. How this demon must
have laughed when he read these lines! Why, he needs
no rehabilitation. The Devil has never been absent
from the world of letters, just as he has never been
missing from the world of men. Since the days of
Job, Satan has taken a deep interest in the affairs of the
human race; and while most writers content themselves[xiii]
with recording his activities on this planet, there never
have been lacking men of sufficient courage to call upon
the prince of darkness in his proper dominions in order
to bring back to us, for our instruction and edification,
a report of his work there. The most distinguished
poet his infernal Highness has ever entertained at his
court, it will be recalled, was Dante. The mark which
the scorching fires of hell left on Dantes face, was to
his contemporaries sufficient proof of the truth of his
story.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 31754
Author: Rudwin, Maximilian J. On the approach to execution all is changed.
The artist must now step down, don his working clothes, and become the
artisan. He now resolutely commits his airy conception, his delicate
Ariel, to the touch of matter; he must decide, almost in a breath, the
scale, the style, the spirit, and the particularity of execution of his
whole design."
Thus Stevenson, in "A Note on Realism," takes it for granted that the
artist in pigments, stone, or words cannot reproduce until he first has
produced, cannot show a perfect work unless he paints, builds, or writes
along the lines of a perfected design.
One cannot dabble long at architecture or the graphic arts without
gaining keen realization of the fact that conception in its elaborative
aspects is as much a part and phase of technique as the executive
handling of materials. But the art of literature, and, more narrowly,
the art of fiction, deal with materials other than those employed in the
other arts; words, not colors or marble, nor yet sounds, are the
resource of the story teller to precipitate his conception in enduring[14]
form; and words are at once frank and mysterious things. Their primary
office is to forward the common business of life; each has some meaning
in itself, more or less definite. It results that the writer of a story
who sets out with only the merest glimmering of what he means to do in
mind can produce a superficially plausible work, a work not too
obviously misshapen, a work that means something, at any rate, although
his failure to trace a design to guide his hand almost inevitably will
prohibit his giving the basic conception most effective expression. And,
since almost any sequence of words has some significance, it also
results that the writer of fiction who works at haphazard may fail to
discover that failure in his work as a whole is due to lack of planning
rather than to defective execution. The mere grammatical coherence of a
fictionally slipshod piece of work is a shield between its writer's
inquiring eye and its essential defects.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 32092
Author: Dowst, Robert Saunders
Release Date: Apr 22, 2010
Format: eBook
Language: English

Kertoelmia ja jutelmia: Suomennoksia ja alkuperäisiä

Tmn jlkeen vietti hn vuoden ajan europalaista kuljeksiaelm,
matkusteli rautateill ja asui hotelleissa, nki kaikki mit
matkustavaisen tulee nhd, kyllstyi kaikkeen ja pyshtyi vihdoin
Kpenhaminaan, jossa hn vuokrasi itsellens komean asunnon, sisusti
sen loistavasti ja otti palveliavaimon laittamaan itsellens ruo'an ja
pitmn huoneet siivossa.
alkoi.
"Koko minun elmni on ollut yksi ainoa kemu. I desired to be plain and practical, and therefore chose the
direct and epistolary form as being most suitable for the purpose in
hand.
[vi]
[vii]
[xii]
[1]

I am setting myself a task which some people would call very ambitious;
others would call it by a name not quite so polite; and a considerable
number would say it was positively absurd, accompanying their criticism
with derisive laughter. Having discussed the possibility of teaching the
art of writing fiction with a good many different kinds of people, I
know quite intimately the opinions which are likely to be expressed
about this little book; and although I do not intend to burden the
reader with an account of their respective merits, I do intend to make
my own position as clear as possible. First of all, I will examine the
results of a recent symposium on the general question.[1:A]
[2]When asked as to the practicability of a School of Fiction, Messrs
Robert Barr, G. Manville Fenn, M. Betham Edwards, Arthur Morrison, G. B.
Burgin, C. J. C. Hyne, and "Mr" John Oliver Hobbes declared against it;
Miss Mary L. Pendered and Miss Clementina Blackwith certain
reservationsspoke in favour of such an institution. True, these names
do not include all representatives of the high places in Fiction, but
they are quite respectable enough for my purpose. It will be seen that
the vote is adverse to the object I have in view. Why? Well, here are a
few reasons. Mr Morrison affirms that writing as a trade is far too
pleasant an idea; John Oliver Hobbes is of opinion that it is impossible
to teach anyone how to produce a work of imagination; and Mr G. B.
Burgin asserts that genius is its own teachera remark characterised by
unwitting modesty. Now, with the spirit of these convictions I am not
disposed to quarrel. This is an age which imagines that everything can
be crammed into the limits of an academical curriculum; and there are
actually some people who would not hesitate to endow a chair [3]of "Ideas
and Imagination." We need to be reminded occasionally that there are
incommunicable elements in all art.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 38887
Author: Anonymous
Release Date: Feb 15, 2012
Format: eBook
Language: English

Great Ghost Stories

Ghost stories lend themselves well to fiction. They leave the
imagination entirely free. In ordinary fiction, especially of the
realistic type, we expect some concessions to be made to facts but when
it comes to a ghost story we assign no limits to the imagination. This
is because the supernatural world offers us no standards for curbing our
fancy. Icarus is given impunity in that atmosphere and there is no sun
to melt his wings. Whatever our wishes, we do not expect ghosts to be
real, and we are fancy free to invent or distort as we may. But in the
twilight of human knowledge it was not thus. The boundaries of the real
and the unreal were undefined and the belief in the supernatural, while
it allowed the imagination free reins, revealed little difference
between its creations and the ideas men held of the actual world. No
attribute or property of metal can be mentioned, hardness,
brittleness, malleability, magnetism, lustre,but some
acknowledged metal can be found which lacks it. So when
we come to define what is classic in literature, we find not a
single quality that may not be dispensed with, or that is not
lacking in some universally accepted and canonized piece of
composition. Is age a requisite? Consider Mr. Lincoln's
speech at Gettysburg, which was recognized as classic and
immortal the hour it was flashed from the wires and printed
or misprinted in the five thousand journals of the land. Is
perfection of plot or unity of design necessary? "David Copperfield"
can hardly be said to have a plot, and the "Merchant
of Venice" is notably lacking in unity. Is detailed
grammatical and idiomatic correctness indispensable? Then
how few are the absolute masters of English prose! It is
with some feeling of embarrassment at this lack of any perfect
test, that I have gathered the contents of these volumes and
ventured to call them Little Classics. And yet the genuine
lovers of literature, setting aside all attempt at conscious definition,
and following only their artistic instincts, will not seriously
differ in their opinion as to what deserves the name of
classic and bears the warrant of immortality.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 46088
Author: Johnson, Rossiter
Release Date: Jun 24, 2014
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Johnson, Rossiter, 1840-1931

The Fiction Factory\r - Being the experience of a writer who, for twenty-two years, has kept a story-mill grinding successfully

It was in 1893 that John Milton Edwards (who sets
his hand to this book of experiences and prefers using
the third person to overworking the egotistical pronoun)
turned wholly to his pen as a means of livelihood. He
was of an ancient Huguenot family, and had once been wealthy; but a
series of misfortunes had reduced him to want. To avoid the
mortification consequent upon his disasters, he left New Orleans, the
city of his forefathers, and took up his residence at Sullivan's
Island, near Charleston, South Carolina.
This island is a very singular one. It consists of little else than the
sea-sand, and is about three miles long. Its breadth at no point
exceeds a quarter of a mile. It is separated from the mainland by a
scarcely perceptible creek oozing its way through a wilderness of reeds
and slime, a favorite resort of the marsh-hen. The vegetation, as might
be supposed, is scant, or at least dwarfish. No trees of any magnitude
are to be seen. Near the western extremity, where Fort Moultrie stands,
and where are some miserable frame buildings, tenanted, during summer,
by the fugitives from Charleston dust and fever, may be found, indeed,
the bristly palmetto; but the whole island, with the exception of this
western point, and a line of hard, white beach on the sea-coast, is
covered with a dense undergrowth of the sweet myrtle, so much prized by
the horticulturists of England. The shrub here often attains the height
of fifteen or twenty feet, and forms an almost impenetrable coppice,
burdening the air with its fragrance.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 48696
Author: Johnson, Rossiter
Release Date: Apr 13, 2015
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Johnson, Rossiter, 1840-1931
