His pale grey eyes shone and twinkled, and
his usually pale face was flushed and animated. The fire burnt brightly,
and the soft radiance of the incandescent lights in the lilies of silver
caught the bubbles that flashed and passed in our glasses. Our chairs,
being his patents, embraced and caressed us rather than submitted to be sat
upon, and there was that luxurious after-dinner atmosphere, when thought
runs gracefully free of the trammels of precision. And he put it to us in
this waymarking the points with a lean forefingeras we sat
and lazily admired his earnestness over this new paradox (as we thought it)
and his fecundity.

You must follow me carefully. I shall have to controvert one or
two ideas that are almost universally accepted. The geometry, for instance,
they taught you at school is founded on a misconception.

Is not that rather a large thing to expect us to begin
upon? said Filby, an argumentative person with red hair.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 35
Author: Wells, H. I dedicate it to all who have heart enough,
brain enough, and soul enough to understand it.

What do I mean by a Hill-top Novel? Well, of late we have been flooded
with stories of evil tendencies: a Hill-top Novel is one which raises a
      protest in favour of purity.

Why have not novelists raised the protest earlier? For this reason.
Hitherto, owing to the stern necessity laid upon the modern seer for
earning his bread, and, incidentally, for finding a publisher to assist
him in promulgating his prophetic opinions, it has seldom happened that
writers of exceptional aims have been able to proclaim to the world at
large the things which they conceived to be best worth their telling it.
Especially has this been the case in the province of fiction. Let me
explain the situation. Most novels nowadays have to run as serials through
magazines or newspapers; and the editors of these periodicals are timid to
a degree which outsiders would hardly believe with regard to the fiction
they admit into their pages. Endless spells surround them. This story or
episode would annoy their Catholic readers; that one would repel their
Wesleyan Methodist subscribers; such an incident is unfit for the perusal
of the young person; such another would drive away the offended British
matron. I do not myself believe there is any real ground for this
excessive and, to be quite frank, somewhat ridiculous timidity. Incredible
as it may seem to the ordinary editor, I am of opinion that it would be
possible to tell the truth, and yet preserve the circulation. A
first-class journal does not really suffer because two or three formalists
or two or three bigots among its thousands of subscribers give it up for
six weeks in a pet of ill-temperand then take it on again. Still,
the effect remains: it is almost impossible to get a novel printed in an
English journal unless it is warranted to contain nothing at all to which
anybody, however narrow, could possibly object, on any grounds whatever,
religious, political, social, moral, or aesthetic. The romance that
appeals to the average editor must say or hint at nothing at all that is
not universally believed and received by everybody everywhere in this
realm of Britain. But literature, as Thomas Hardy says with truth, is
mainly the expression of souls in revolt. Hence the antagonism between
      literature and journalism.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4340
Author: Allen, Grant
Release Date: Aug 1, 2003
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/4340_df1306e3-b556-4f46-8cd1-9004799ebc3f.jpg?v=1671277848
the-time-machine-gb-6620
The Time Machine

The Time Machine

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 6620
Author: Wells, H. It is one of the most ambitious and least satisfactory of my
books, and I have taken the opportunity afforded by this reprinting to
make a number of excisions and alterations. Like most of my earlier work,
it was written under considerable pressure; there are marks of haste not
only in the writing of the latter part, but in the very construction of
the story. Except for certain streaks of a slovenliness which seems to be
an almost unavoidable defect in me, there is little to be ashamed of in
the writing of the opening portion; but it will be fairly manifest to the
critic that instead of being put aside and thought over through a
leisurely interlude, the ill-conceived latter part was pushed to its end.
I was at that time overworked, and badly in need of a holiday. In addition
to various necessary journalistic tasks, I had in hand another book, Love
and Mr. Lewisham, which had taken a very much stronger hold upon my
affections than this present story. My circumstances demanded that one or
other should be finished before I took any rest, and so I wound up the
Sleeper sufficiently to make it a marketable work, hoping to be able to
revise it before the book printers at any rate got hold of it. But fortune
was against me. I came back to England from Italy only to fall dangerously
ill, and I still remember the impotent rage and strain of my attempt to
put some sort of finish to my story of Mr. Lewisham, with my temperature
at a hundred and two. I couldnt endure the thought of leaving that
book a fragment. I did afterwards contrive to save it from the
consequences of that febrile spurtLove and Mr. Lewisham is
indeed one of my most carefully balanced booksbut the Sleeper
      escaped me.

It is twelve years now since the Sleeper was written, and that young man
of thirty-one is already too remote for me to attempt any very drastic
reconstruction of his work. I have played now merely the part of an
editorial elder brother: cut out relentlessly a number of long tiresome
passages that showed all too plainly the fagged, toiling brain, the heavy
sluggish driven pen, and straightened out certain indecisions at
the end. Except for that, I have done no more than hack here and there at
clumsy phrases and repetitions. The worst thing in the earlier version,
and the thing that rankled most in my mind, was the treatment of the
relations of Helen Wotton and Graham. Haste in art is almost always
vulgarisation, and I slipped into the obvious vulgarity of making what the
newspaper syndicates call a love interest out of Helen.
There was even a clumsy intimation that instead of going up in the
flying-machine to fight, Graham might have given in to Ostrog, and married
Helen. I have now removed the suggestion of these uncanny connubialities.
Not the slightest intimation of any sexual interest could in truth have
arisen between these two. They loved and kissed one another, but as a girl
and her heroic grandfather might love, and in a crisis kiss. I have found
it possible, without any very serious disarrangement, to clear all that
objectionable stuff out of the story, and so a little ease my conscience
on the score of this ungainly lapse. I have also, with a few strokes of
the pen, eliminated certain dishonest and regrettable suggestions that the
People beat Ostrog. My Graham dies, as all his kind must die, with no
certainty of either victory or defeat.

Who will winOstrog or the People? A thousand years hence that will
still be just the open question we leave to-day.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 12163
Author: Wells, H. I
arrogated a small viewing machine,
and scanned the centuries
of the past in the hope that a
sanctuary might reveal itself to
my aching eyes. Kwel tediety
that was! Back, back I went
through the ages. Back to the
Century of the Dog, back to the
Age of the Crippled Men. I
found no time better than my
own. Back and back I peered,
back as far as the Numbered
Years. The Twenty-Eighth Century
was boredom unendurable,
the Twenty-Sixth a morass of
dullness. Twenty-Fifth, Twenty-Fourthwherever
I looked, tediety
was what I found.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 22559
Author: Pohl, Frederik
Release Date: Sep 10, 2007
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Illustrator: Emshwiller, Ed, 1925-1990

No Great Magic

I dipped through the filmy curtain into the boys' half of the dressing
room and there was Sid sitting at the star's dressing table in his
threadbare yellowed undershirt, the lucky one, not making up yet but
staring sternly at himself in the bulb-framed mirror and[151]
experimentally working his features a little, as actors will, and
kneading the stubble on his fat chin.
[152]I said to him quietly, "Siddy, what are we putting on tonight? No historical fact is, however, better established than
that till nearly the end of the nineteenth century it was the general
belief that the ancient industrial system, with all its shocking
social consequences, was destined to last, with possibly a little
patching, to the end of time. How strange and wellnigh incredible does
it seem that so prodigious a moral and material transformation as has
taken place since then could have been accomplished in so brief an
interval[Pg xix]? The readiness with which men accustom themselves, as
matters of course, to improvements in their condition, which, when
anticipated, seemed to leave nothing more to be desired, could not be
more strikingly illustrated. What reflection could be better
calculated to moderate the enthusiasm of reformers who count for their
reward on the lively gratitude of future ages!
The object of this volume is to assist persons who, while desiring to
gain a more definite idea of the social contrasts between the
nineteenth and twentieth centuries, are daunted by the formal aspect
of the histories which treat the subject. Warned by a teacher's
experience that learning is accounted a weariness to the flesh, the
author has sought to alleviate the instructive quality of the book by
casting it in the form of a romantic narrative, which he would be glad
to fancy not wholly devoid of interest on its own account.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 25439
Author: Bellamy, Edward
Release Date: May 12, 2008
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Defiant Agents

Copyright 1962 by Andre Norton
All rights reserved. Then he stepped over to the control-room telewindow
and studied the three-dimensional screen. The hour was 8:00 p.m.; the
season, summer; the Year 542 A.D.
Darkness was on hand, but there was a full moon rising and he could
see trees not far awayoaks and beeches, mostly. Roving the eye of
the camera, he saw more trees of the same species. The "castle of
Yore" was safely ensconced in a forest. Satisfied, he turned away.
If his calculations were correct, the castle of Carbonek stood in the
next valley to the south, and on a silver table in a chamber of the
castle stood the object of his quest.
Mallory was not one to keep himself in suspense. Being used to such journeys, she looked calmly about with
quick gray eyes, making little flicking gestures with her hands as if
brushing the stray minutes and seconds from her plain brown coat.
The scene of Mrs. Mimms' arrival in the past was the rear of a large
supermarket, more specifically between two packing cases which had
once contained breakfast foods.
