Not to mention
rumours which agitated the maritime population and excited the public mind,
even in the interior of continents, seafaring men were particularly excited.
Merchants, common sailors, captains of vessels, skippers, both of Europe and
America, naval officers of all countries, and the Governments of several states
on the two continents, were deeply interested in the matter.

The facts relating to this apparition (entered in various log-books) agreed in
most respects as to the shape of the object or creature in question, the
untiring rapidity of its movements, its surprising power of locomotion, and the
peculiar life with which it seemed endowed. If it was a cetacean, it surpassed
in size all those hitherto classified in science. Taking into consideration the
mean of observations made at divers times, rejecting the timid estimate
of those who assigned to this object a length of two hundred feet, equally with
the exaggerated opinions which set it down as a mile in width and three in
length,we might fairly conclude that this mysterious being surpassed
greatly all dimensions admitted by the ichthyologists of the day, if it
existed at all. And that it did exist was an undeniable fact; and, with
that tendency which disposes the human mind in favour of the marvellous, we can
understand the excitement produced in the entire world by this supernatural
apparition. As to classing it in the list of fables, the idea was out of the
question.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 164
Author: Verne, Jules
Release Date: Sep 1, 1994
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/164_dd5f71e8-82c9-4217-9f89-3abdd0a87d34.jpg?v=1671247542
the-secret-sharer-gb-220
The Secret Sharer

The Secret Sharer

On my right hand there were lines of fishing stakes resembling a
mysterious system of half-submerged bamboo fences, incomprehensible in its
division of the domain of tropical fishes, and crazy of aspect as if
abandoned forever by some nomad tribe of fishermen now gone to the other
end of the ocean; for there was no sign of human habitation as far as the
eye could reach. To the left a group of barren islets, suggesting ruins of
stone walls, towers, and blockhouses, had its foundations set in a blue
sea that itself looked solid, so still and stable did it lie below my
feet; even the track of light from the westering sun shone smoothly,
without that animated glitter which tells of an imperceptible ripple. And
when I turned my head to take a parting glance at the tug which had just
left us anchored outside the bar, I saw the straight line of the flat
shore joined to the stable sea, edge to edge, with a perfect and unmarked
closeness, in one leveled floor half brown, half blue under the enormous
dome of the sky. Corresponding in their insignificance to the islets of
the sea, two small clumps of trees, one on each side of the only fault in
the impeccable joint, marked the mouth of the river Meinam we had just
left on the first preparatory stage of our homeward journey; and, far back
on the inland level, a larger and loftier mass, the grove surrounding the
great Paknam pagoda, was the only thing on which the eye could rest from
the vain task of exploring the monotonous sweep of the horizon. Here and
there gleams as of a few scattered pieces of silver marked the windings of
the great river; and on the nearest of them, just within the bar, the tug
steaming right into the land became lost to my sight, hull and funnel and
masts, as though the impassive earth had swallowed her up without an
effort, without a tremor. My eye followed the light cloud of her smoke,
now here, now there, above the plain, according to the devious curves of
the stream, but always fainter and farther away, till I lost it at last
behind the miter-shaped hill of the great pagoda. Doubtless some data
concerning his death and the destruction of his schooner might be
gathered from the report of Lieutenant Mainwaring, now filed in the
archives of the Navy Department, out beyond such bald and bloodless
narrative the author knows of nothing, unless it be the little chap-book
history published by Isaiah Thomas in Newburyport about the year
1821-22, entitled, "A True History of the Life and Death of Captain Jack
Scarfield." This lack of particularity in the history of one so notable
in his profession it is the design of the present narrative in a measure
to supply, and, if the author has seen fit to cast it in the form of a
fictional story, it is only that it may make more easy reading for those
who see fit to follow the tale from this to its conclusion.

ELEAZER COOPER, or Captain Cooper, as was his better-known title in
Philadelphia, was a prominent member of the Society of Friends. He was
an overseer of the meeting and an occasional speaker upon particular
occasions. When at home from one of his many voyages he never failed to
occupy his seat in the meeting both on First Day and Fifth Day, and he
was regarded by his fellow townsmen as a model of business integrity and
of domestic responsibility.

More incidental to this history, however, it is to be narrated that
Captain Cooper was one of those trading skippers who carried their own
merchandise in their own vessels which they sailed themselves, and on
whose decks they did their own bartering. His vessel was a swift, large
schooner, the Eliza Cooper, of Philadelphia, named for his wife. And there are still others, less pliable, less capable, less
fortunate, perhaps less base, who continue, even in these isles of plenty,
      to lack bread.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1604
Author: Osbourne, Lloyd
Release Date: Jan 1, 1999
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Contributor (Author): Stevenson, Robert Louis, 1850-1894

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1604_1d72c324-1b3d-48a7-8767-a193d8a68d1e.jpg?v=1671251287
the-survivors-of-the-chancellor-diary-of-j-r-kazallon-passenger-gb-1652
The Survivors of the Chancellor: Diary of J.R. Fort
Sumter ere long is doubled, the sweeping batteries of the mainland on our
left are soon passed, and by four oclock the rapid current of the ebbing
tide has carried us through the harbour-mouth.

But as yet we have not reached the open sea; we have still to thread our
way through the narrow channels which the surge has hollowed out amongst
the sand-banks. The captain takes a south-west course, rounding the
lighthouse at the corner of the fort; the sails are closely trimmed; the
last sandy point is safely coasted, and at length, at seven oclock in the
evening; we are out free upon the wide Atlantic.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1652
Author: Verne, Jules
Release Date: Feb 1, 1999
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1652_afdbb12f-0ab8-4575-8fbb-229fd999436b.jpg?v=1671251382
1492-gb-1692
1492

1492

THE morning was gray and I sat by the sea near Palos in a gray mood. Shipwrecks occur in
other of Verne's tales; but this is his only story devoted wholly to
such a disaster. In it the author has gathered all the tragedy, the
mystery, and the suffering possible to the sea. All the various forms
of disaster, all the possibilities of horror, the depths of shame and
agony, are heaped upon these unhappy voyagers. The accumulation is
mathematically complete and emotionally unforgettable. The tale has
well been called the "imperishable epic of shipwreck."
The idea of the book is said to have originated in the celebrated
French painting by Gericault, "the Wreck of the Medusa," now in the
Louvre gallery. The Medusa was a French frigate wrecked off the coast
of Africa in 1816. Some of the survivors, escaping on a raft, were
rescued by a passing ship after many days of torture. Verne, however,
seems also to have drawn upon the terrifying experiences of the British
ship Sarah Sands in 1857, her story being fresh in the public mind at
the time he wrote. The Sarah Sands caught fire off the African coast
while on a voyage to India carrying British troops. There was gunpowder
aboard liable to blow up at any moment. Some of it did indeed explode,
tearing a huge hole in the vessel's side. A storm added to the terror,
and the waters entering the breach caused by the explosion, combated
with the fire. After ten days of desperate struggle, the charred and
sinking vessel reached a port.
The extreme length of life which Verne allows his people in their
starving, thirsting condition is proven possible by medical science and
recent "fasting"' experiments. The dramatic climax of the tale wherein
the castaways find fresh water in the ocean is based upon a fact, one
of those odd geographical facts of which the author made such frequent,
skillful and instructive use.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1698
Author: Verne, Jules
Release Date: Apr 1, 1999
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1698_14bf0aae-522a-4cfc-99f8-b0c4f8ae250a.jpg?v=1671251468
the-rescue-a-romance-of-the-shallows-gb-1712
The Rescue: A Romance of the Shallows

The Rescue: A Romance of the Shallows

'Allas!' quod she, 'that ever this sholde happe! I say he believed, for though it was beyond question that
the danger was averted for the time, it was doubtful whether they had stirred a
foot to combat it, the secret discovered being of such a nature that mere
suspicion of it on this side was likely to destroy its efficacy.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2360
Author: Childers, Erskine
Release Date: Oct 1, 2000
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2360_f4d3f4d3-cba6-4d03-8a66-d6ce4a0af90c.jpg?v=1671253092
the-mutiny-of-the-elsinore-gb-2415
The Mutiny of the Elsinore

The Mutiny of the Elsinore

From the first the voyage was going wrong. Routed out of my hotel on a bitter
March morning, I had crossed Baltimore and reached the pier-end precisely on
time. At nine oclock the tug was to have taken me down the bay and put
me on board the Elsinore, and with growing irritation I sat frozen
inside my taxicab and waited. What goes on in those distant depths? What creatures inhabit, or could inhabit, those regions twelve or fifteen miles beneath the surface of the water? Its almost beyond conjecture.
Jules Verne (1828-1905) published the French equivalents of these words in 1869, and little has changed since. 126 years later, a Time cover story on deep-sea exploration made much the same admission: We know more about Mars than we know about the oceans. This reality begins to explain the dark power and otherworldly fascination of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas.
Born in the French river town of Nantes, Verne had a lifelong passion for the sea. First as a Paris stockbroker, later as a celebrated author and yachtsman, he went on frequent voyagesto Britain, America, the Mediterranean. But the specific stimulus for this novel was an 1865 fan letter from a fellow writer, Madame George Sand. She praised Vernes two early novels Five Weeks in a Balloon (1863) and Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), then added: Soon I hope youll take us into the ocean depths, your characters traveling in diving equipment perfected by your science and your imagination. Thus inspired, Verne created one of literatures great rebels, a freedom fighter who plunged beneath the waves to wage a unique form of guerilla warfare.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2488
Author: Verne, Jules
Release Date: Jan 1, 2001
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Illustrator: Winter, Milo, 1888-1956
Translator: Walter, Frederick Paul, 1943-

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2488_48b21188-82b8-47d1-8f15-f6533c563493.jpg?v=1671253433
moby-dick-or-the-whale-gb-2489
Moby Dick Or, The Whale

Moby Dick; Or, The Whale

Call me Ishmael. But then
his lordship is addicted to harsh judgments and his perceptions are not always
normal. He says, for instance, of Anne of Cleves, that she was the
ugliest woman that ever I saw. As far as we can glean from his
own voluminous writings it would seem to be extremely doubtful whether he ever
saw Anne of Cleves at all, and we suspect him here of being no more than a
slavish echo of the common voice, which attributed Cromwells downfall to
the ugliness of this bride he procured for his Bluebeard master. To the common
voice from the brush of Holbein, which permits us to form our own opinions and
shows us a lady who is certainly very far from deserving his lordships
harsh stricture. Similarly, I like to believe that Lord Henry was wrong in his
pronouncement upon Sir Oliver, and I am encouraged in this belief by the
pen-portrait which he himself appends to it. He was, he says,
a tall, powerful fellow of a good shape, if we except that his arms were
too long and that his feet and hands were of an uncomely bigness. The reader gratifies his curiosity in pursuing the adventures of a
person in whose favour he is prepossessed; he espouses his cause, he
sympathises with him in his distress, his indignation is heated against the
authors of his calamity: the humane passions are inflamed; the contrast between
dejected virtue and insulting vice appears with greater aggravation, and every
impression having a double force on the imagination, the memory retains the
circumstance, and the heart improves by the example. The attention is not tired
with a bare catalogue of characters, but agreeably diverted with all the
variety of invention; and the vicissitudes of life appear in their peculiar
circumstances, opening an ample field for wit and humour.

Romance, no doubt, owes its origin to ignorance, vanity, and superstition. In
the dark ages of the World, when a man had rendered himself famous for wisdom
or valour, his family and adherents availed themselves of his superior
qualities, magnified his virtues, and represented his character and person as
sacred and supernatural. The vulgar easily swallowed the bait, implored his
protection, and yielded the tribute of homage and praise, even to adoration;
his exploits were handed down to posterity with a thousand exaggerations; they
were repeated as incitements to virtue; divine honours were paid, and altars
erected to his memory, for the encouragement of those who attempted to imitate
his example; and hence arose the heathen mythology, which is no other than a
collection of extravagant romances. As learning advanced, and genius received
cultivation, these stories were embellished with the graces of poetry, that
they might the better recommend themselves to the attention; they were sung in
public, at festivals, for the instruction and delight of the audience; and
rehearsed before battle, as incentives to deeds of glory. Thus tragedy and the
epic muse were born, and, in the progress of taste, arrived at perfection. It
is no wonder that the ancients could not relish a fable in prose, after they
had seen so many remarkable events celebrated in verse by their best poets; we
therefore find no romance among them during the era of their excellence, unless
the Cyropdia of Xenophon may be so called; and it was not till arts and
sciences began to revive after the irruption of the barbarians into Europe,
that anything of this kind appeared. But when the minds of men were debauched
by the imposition of priestcraft to the most absurd pitch of credulity, the
authors of romance arose, and losing sight of probability, filled their
performances with the most monstrous hyperboles. If they could not equal the
ancient poets in point of genius they were resolved to excel them in fiction,
and apply to the wonder, rather than the judgment, of their readers.
Accordingly, they brought necromancy to their aid, and instead of supporting
the character of their heroes by dignity of sentiment and practice,
distinguished them by their bodily strength, activity, and extravagance of
behaviour. Although nothing could be more ludicrous and unnatural than the
figures they drew, they did not want patrons and admirers; and the world
actually began to be infected with the spirit of knight-errantry, when
Cervantes, by an inimitable piece of ridicule, reformed the taste of mankind,
representing chivalry in the right point of view, and converting romance to
purposes far more useful and entertaining, by making it assume the sock, and
point out the follies of ordinary life.

The same method has been practised by other Spanish and French authors, and by
none more successfully than by Monsieur Le Sage, who, in his Adventures of
Gil Blas, has described the knavery and foibles of life, with infinite
humour and sagacity. The following sheets I have modelled on his plan, taking
me liberty, however, to differ from him in the execution, where I thought his
particular situations were uncommon, extravagant, or peculiar to the country in
which the scene is laid. The disgraces of Gil Blas are, for the most part, such
as rather excite mirth than compassion; he himself laughs at them; and his
transitions from distress to happiness, or at least ease, are so sudden, that
neither the reader has time to pity him, nor himself to be acquainted with
affliction. This conduct, in my opinion, not only deviates from probability,
but prevents that generous indignation, which ought to animate the reader
against the sordid and vicious disposition of the world. I have attempted to
represent modest merit struggling with every difficulty to which a friendless
orphan is exposed, from his own want of experience, as well as from the
selfishness, envy, malice, and base indifference of mankind. To secure a
favourable prepossession, I have allowed him the advantages of birth and
education, which in the series of his misfortunes will, I hope, engage the
ingenuous more warmly in his behalf; and though I foresee, that some people
will be offended at the mean scenes in which he is involved, I persuade myself
that the judicious will not only perceive the necessity of describing those
situations to which he must of course be confined, in his low estate, but also
find entertainment in viewing those parts of life, where the humours and
passions are undisguised by affectation, ceremony, or education; and the
whimsical peculiarities of disposition appear as nature has implanted them. But
I believe I need not trouble myself in vindicating a practice authorized by the
best writers in this way, some of whom I have already named.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4085
Author: Smollett, T. Nothing
has ever shown me more plainly that truth is stranger than
fiction, for all that is most improbable here is the actual
fact.
The Comte de Bourke was really an Irish Jacobite, naturalised
in France, and married to the daughter of the Marquis de
Varennes, as well as in high favour with the Marshal Duke of
Berwick.
In 1719, just when the ambition of Elizabeth Farnese, the
second wife of Philip V. of Spain, had involved that country in a
war with England, France, and Austria, the Count was transferred
from the Spanish Embassy to that of Sweden, and sent for his wife
and two elder children to join him at a Spanish port.
This arrangement was so strange that I can only account for it
by supposing that as this was the date of a feeble Spanish
attempt on behalf of the Jacobites in Scotland, Comte de Bourke
may not have ventured by the direct route. Or it may not
have been etiquette for him to re-enter France when appointed
ambassador. At any rate, the poor Countess did take this
route to the South, and I am inclined to think the narrative must
be correct, as all the side-lights I have been able to gain
perfectly agree with it, often in an unexpected manner.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4271
Author: Yonge, Charlotte M. The change of name is solely the act of the author, and
arises from a conviction that the appellation given in this publication is
more appropriate than the one laid aside. The necessity of writing to a
name, instead of getting it from the incidents of the book itself, has
been the cause of this departure from the ordinary rules.

When this book was commenced, it was generally supposed that the Mexican
war would end, after a few months of hostilities. Such was never the
opinion of the writer. He has ever looked forward to a protracted
struggle; and, now that Congress has begun to interfere, sees as little
probability of its termination, as on the day it commenced. Whence
honourable gentlemen have derived their notions of the constitution, when
they advance the doctrine that Congress is an American Aulic council,
empowered to encumber the movements of armies, and, as old Blucher
expressed it in reference to the diplomacy of Europe, to spoil with the
pen the work achieved by the sword, it is difficult to say more than
this, that they do not get them from the constitution itself. It has
generally been supposed that the present executive was created in order to
avoid the very evils of a distracted and divided council, which this new
construction has a direct tendency to revive. But a presidential election
has ever proved, and probably will ever prove, stronger than any written
      fundamental law.

We have had occasion to refer often to Mexico in these pages. It has been
our aim to do so in a kind spirit; for, while we have never doubted that
the factions which have possessed themselves of the government in that
country have done us great wrong, wrong that would have justified a much
earlier appeal to arms, we have always regarded the class of Mexicans who
alone can properly be termed the 'people,' as mild, amiable, and disposed
to be on friendly terms with us. Providence, however, directs all to the
completion of its own wise ends. If the crust which has so long encircled
that nation, enclosing it in bigotry and ignorance, shall now be
irretrievably broken, letting in light, even Mexico herself may have cause
hereafter to rejoice in her present disasters. It was in this way that
Italy has been, in a manner, regenerated; the conquests of the French
carrying in their train the means and agencies which have, at length,
aroused that glorious portion of the earth to some of its ancient spirit.
Mexico, in certain senses, is the Italy of this continent; and war,
however ruthless and much to be deplored, may yet confer on her the
inestimable blessings of real liberty, and a religion released from feux
d'artifice, as well as all other artifices.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4796
Author: Cooper, James Fenimore
Release Date: Dec 1, 2003
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/4796_ef3eca36-4eb0-4b8f-ae22-d1052817d7a4.jpg?v=1671278933
20000-lieues-sous-les-mers-part-1-gb-5095
20000 Lieues sous les mers — Part 1

Vingt Mille Lieues Sous Les Mers — Part 1

L'anne 1866 fut marque par un vnement bizarre, un phnomne inexpliqu et inexplicable que personne n'a sans doute oubli. It is true that three generations or so ago, Defoe's
works were edited by both Sir Walter Scott and Hazlitt, and that this
masterly piece of realism, "Captain Singleton," was reprinted a few years
back in "The Camelot Classics," but it is safe to say that out of every
thousand readers of "Robinson Crusoe" only one or two will have even heard
of the "Memoirs of a Cavalier," "Colonel Jack," "Moll Flanders," or
"Captain Singleton." It is indeed distressing to think that while many
scores of thousands of copies of Lord Lytton's flashy romance, "Paul
Clifford," have been devoured by the public, "Captain Singleton" has
remained unread and almost forgotten. But the explanation is simple.
Defoe's plain and homely realism soon grew to be thought vulgar by people
who themselves aspired to be refined and genteel. The rapid spread of
popular education, in the middle of last century, was responsible for a
great many aberrations of taste, and the works of the two most English of
Englishmen, Defoe and Hogarth, were judged to be hardly fitting for polite
society, as we may see from Lamb's Essay on Hogarth, and from an early
edition of Chambers's "Cyclopaedia of English Literature" (1843), where we
are told: "Nor is it needful to show how elegant and reflective
literature, especially, tends to moralise, to soften, and to adorn the
soul and life of man." "Unfortunately the taste or circumstances of
Defoe led him mostly into low life, and his characters are such as
we cannot sympathise with. The whole arcana of roguery and villany
seems to have been open to him.... It might be thought that the good taste
which led Defoe to write in a style of such pure and unpretending English,
instead of the inflated manner of vulgar writers, would have dictated a
more careful selection of his subjects, and kept him from wandering so
frequently into the low and disgusting purlieus of vice. But this moral
and tasteful discrimination seems to have been wholly wanting," &c.
The 'forties were the days when critics still talked learnedly of the
"noble style," &c., "the vulgar," of "sinking" or "rising" with "the
subject," the days when Books of Beauty were in fashion, and Rembrandt's
choice of beggars, wrinkled faces and grey hairs, for his favourite
subjects seemed a low and reprehensible taste in "high art." Though
critics to-day still ingenuously confound an artist's subject with his
treatment of it, and prefer scenes of life to be idealised rather than
realised by writers, we have advanced a little since the days of the poet
Montgomery, and it would be difficult now to find anybody writing so
confidently"Unfortunately the taste or circumstances of Defoe led
him mostly into low life," however much the critic might believe it. But
let us glance at a few passages in "Captain Singleton," which may show us
why Defoe excels as a realist, and why his descriptions of "low life" are
artistically as perfect as any descriptions of "higher life" in the works
of the English novelists. Take the following description of kidnapping:

Now here, in a single sentence, Defoe catches for us the whole soul and
character of the situation. It seems very simple, but it sums up
marvellously an exact observation and knowledge of the arts of the gipsy
child-stealer, of her cunning flattery and brassy boldness, and we can see
the simple little girl running back to the house to tell the nurse that a
fine lady was kissing the child, and had told her to tell where they were
and she should not be frightened, &c.; and this picture again calls up
the hue and cry after the kidnappers and the fruitless hopes of the
parents. In a word, Defoe has condensed in the eight simple lines of his
little scene all that is essential to its living truth; and let the young
writer note that it is ever the sign of the master to do in three words,
or with three strokes, what the ordinary artist does in thirty. Defoe's
imagination is so extraordinarily comprehensive in picking out just those
little matter-of-fact details that suggest all the other aspects, and that
emphasise the character of the scene or situation, that he makes us
believe in the actuality of whatever he is describing. So real, so living
in every detail is this apocryphal narrative, in "Captain Singleton," of
the crossing of Africa by a body of marooned sailors from the coast of
Mozambique to the Gold Coast, that one would firmly believe Defoe was
committing to writing the verbal narrative of some adventurer in the
flesh, if it were not for certain passagessuch as the description
of the impossible desert on page 90, which proves that Defoe was piecing
together his description of an imaginary journey from the geographical
records and travellers' tales of his contemporaries, aided perhaps by the
confused yarns of some sailor friends. How substantially truthful in
spirit and in detail is Defoe's account of Madagascar is proved by the
narrative of Robert Drury's "Captivity in Madagascar," published in 1729.
The natives themselves, as described intimately by Drury, who lived
amongst them for many years, would produce just such an effect as Defoe
describes on rough sailors in their perilous position. The method by which
Defoe compels us to accept improbabilities, and lulls our critical sense
asleep, is well shown in the following passages:

Now the first passage we have quoted about the cowardice, &c., of the
Portuguese crew is not in keeping with the second passage, which shows the
men as "wishing to die with their companions"; but so actual is the scene
of the seamen "in a body coming up to the rail of the quarter-deck," that
we cannot but believe the thing happened so, just as we believe in all the
thousand little details of the imaginary narrative of "Robinson Crusoe."
This feat of the imagination Defoe strengthens in the most artful manner,
by putting in the mouths of his characters various reflections to
substantiate the narrative. For example, in the description, on page 263,
of the savages who lined the perilous channel in a half-moon, where the
European ship lay, we find the afterthoughts are added so naturally, that
they would carry conviction to any judge or jury:

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 6422
Author: Defoe, Daniel
Release Date: Sep 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

20,000 Leagues under the Sea

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 6538
Author: Verne, Jules
Release Date: Sep 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/bookcover_1aa4b49d-1cb7-42b8-8ecc-389ce97a220d.jpg?v=1671284081
captain-blood-gb-6548
Captain Blood

Captain Blood

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 6548
Author: Sabatini, Rafael
Release Date: Sep 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/bookcover_7dc97f54-8035-4e30-be77-b054a77c6d85.jpg?v=1671284111
mr-midshipman-easy-gb-6629
Mr. Midshipman Easy

Mr. Midshipman Easy

Mr Nicodemus Easy was a gentleman who lived down in Hampshire; he was a
married man, and in very easy circumstances. You see, its quite warm; fine long
skirts, stout horn buttons, and plenty of pockets.

And, Wellingborough, he added, since we are both short of
money, and you want an outfit, and I Have none to give, you may
as well take my fowling-piece along, and sell it in New York for what you can
get.Nay, take it; its of no use to me now; I cant find it
in powder any more.

I was then but a boy. Some time previous my mother had removed from New York to
a pleasant village on the Hudson River, where we lived in a small house, in a
quiet way. Sad disappointments in several plans which I had sketched for my
future life; the necessity of doing something for myself, united to a naturally
roving disposition, had now conspired within me, to send me to sea as a sailor.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 8118
Author: Melville, Herman
Release Date: May 1, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Gentleman: A Romance of the Sea

                                1908
The Sea! the Sea!

Our own home-land, the Sea!

'Tis, as it always was, and still, please God, will be,

When we are gone,

Our own,

Possessing it for Thee,

Ours, ours, and ours alone,

The Anglo-Saxon Sea.

No jerry-building here;

No scenes that once were dear

Beneath man's tawdry touch to disappear;

Always the same, the Sea,

Th' unstable-steadfast Sea.

'Tis, as it always was, and still, please God, will be,

When we are gone,

Our own,

Vice-regents under Thee,

Ours, ours, and ours alone,

The Anglo-Saxon Sea.

New suns and moons arise;

Perish old dynasties;

For ever rise and die the centuries;

Only remains the Sea,

Our right of way, the Sea.

'Tis, as it always was, and still, phase God, will be,

When we are gone,

Our own,

Our heritage from Thee,

Ours, ours, and ours alone,

The Anglo-Saxon Sea.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 8396
Author: Ollivant, Alfred
Release Date: Jun 1, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates\r - Fiction, Fact & Fancy Concerning the Buccaneers & Marooners of the Spanish Main

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 8610
Author: Pyle, Howard
Release Date: Aug 1, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/bookcover_43fc5ab7-6af0-4c1a-92a5-80354d1c1215.jpg?v=1671292429
afloat-and-ashore-a-sea-tale-gb-8647
Afloat and Ashore: A Sea Tale

Afloat and Ashore: A Sea Tale

The writer has published so much truth which the world has insisted was
fiction, and so much fiction which has been received as truth, that, in
the present instance, he is resolved to say nothing on the subject. Each
of his readers is at liberty to believe just as much, or as little, of the
matter here laid before him, or her, as may suit his, or her notions,
prejudices, knowledge of the world, or ignorance. If anybody is disposed
to swear he knows precisely where Clawbonny is, that he was well
acquainted with old Mr. Hardinge, nay, has often heard him preachlet
him make his affidavit, in welcome. Should he get a little wide of the
mark, it will not be the first document of that nature, which has
      possessed the same weakness.

It is possible that certain captious persons may be disposed to inquire
into the cui bono? of such a book. The answer is this. Everything
which can convey to the human mind distinct and accurate impressions of
events, social facts, professional peculiarities, or past history, whether
of the higher or more familiar character, is of use. All that is necessary
is, that the pictures should be true to nature, if not absolutely drawn
from living sitters. The knowledge we gain by our looser reading, often
becomes serviceable in modes and manners little anticipated in the moments
      when it is acquired.

Perhaps the greater portion of all our peculiar opinions have their
foundation in prejudices. These prejudices are produced in consequence of
its being out of the power of any one man to see, or know, every thing.
The most favoured mortal must receive far more than half of all that he
learns on his faith in others; and it may aid those who can never be
placed in positions to judge for themselves of certain phases of men and
things, to get pictures of the same, drawn in a way to give them nearer
views than they might otherwise obtain. This is the greatest benefit of
all light literature in general, it being possible to render that which is
purely fictitious even more useful than that which is strictly true, by
avoiding extravagancies, by pourtraying with fidelity, and, as our friend
Marble might say, by generalizing with discretion.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 8647
Author: Cooper, James Fenimore
Release Date: Aug 1, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Survivors of the Chancellor: Diary of J.R.
