The eight years spent in Africa, since
my last work was published, have not, I fear, improved my power of writing
English; but I hope that, whatever my descriptions want in clearness,
or literary skill, may in a measure be compensated by the novelty of
the scenes described, and the additional information afforded on that
curse of Africa, and that shame, even now, in the 19th century, of an
European nation,the slave-trade.
I took the Lady Nyassa to Bombay for the express purpose
of selling her, and might without any difficulty have done so; but with
the thought of parting with her arose, more strongly than ever, the
feeling of disinclination to abandon the East Coast of Africa to the
Portuguese and slave-trading, and I determined to run home and consult
my friends before I allowed the little vessel to pass from my hands.
After, therefore, having put two Ajawa lads, Chuma and Wakatani, to
school under the eminent missionary the Rev. Dr. Wilson, and having
provided satisfactorily for the native crew, I started homewards with
the three white sailors, and reached London July 20th, 1864. Mr.
and Mrs. Webb, my much-loved friends, wrote to Bombay inviting me, in
the event of my coming to England, to make Newstead Abbey my headquarters,
and on my arrival renewed their invitation: and though, when I accepted
it, I had no intention of remaining so long with my kind-hearted generous
friends, I stayed with them until April, 1865, and under their roof
transcribed from my own and my brothers journal the whole of
this present book. It is with heartfelt gratitude I would record
their unwearied kindness. My acquaintance with Mr. Webb began
in Africa, where he was a daring and successful hunter, and his continued
friendship is most valuable because he has seen missionary work, and
he would not accord his respect and esteem to me had he not believed
that I, and my brethren also, were to be looked on as honest men earnestly
trying to do our duty.
The Government have supported the proposal of the Royal Geographical
Society made by my friend Sir Roderick Murchison, and have united with
that body to aid me in another attempt to open Africa to civilizing
influences, and a valued private friend has given a thousand pounds
for the same object. I propose to go inland, north of the territory
which the Portuguese in Europe claim, and endeavour to commence that
system on the East which has been so eminently successful on the West
Coast; a system combining the repressive efforts of H.M. cruisers with
lawful trade and Christian Missionsthe moral and material results
of which have been so gratifying. I hope to ascend the Rovuma,
or some other river North of Cape Delgado, and, in addition to my other
work, shall strive, by passing along the Northern end of Lake Nyassa
and round the Southern end of Lake Tanganyika, to ascertain the watershed
of that part of Africa. In so doing, I have no wish to unsettle
what with so much toil and danger was accomplished by Speke and Grant,
but rather to confirm their illustrious discoveries.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2519
Author: Livingstone, David
Release Date: Feb 1, 2001
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2519_7ac6fe4c-6ab6-4a21-b54b-852288e237ff.jpg?v=1671253524
ismailia-gb-3607
Ismailia

Ismailia

An interval of five years has elapsed since the termination of my
engagement in the service of His Highness the Khedive of
Egypt, "to suppress the slave-hunters of Central Africa, and to
annex the countries constituting the Nile Basin, with the object
of opening those savage regions to legitimate commerce and
establishing a permanent government."
This volume"Ismailia"gives an accurate description of the salient
points of the expedition. My thanks are due to the public for the kind
reception of the work, and for the general appreciation of the spirit
which prompted me to undertake a mission so utterly opposed to the
Egyptian ideas of 1869-1873; at a time when no Englishman had held a
high command, when rival consulates were struggling for paramount
influence, when the native officials were jealous of foreign
interference, and it appeared that slavery and the slave trade of the
White Nile were institutions almost necessary to the existence of
Egyptian society.
It was obvious to all observers that an attack upon the slave-dealing
and slave-hunting establishments of Egypt by a foreigneran
Englishmanwould be equal to a raid upon a hornets' nest, that all
efforts to suppress the old-established traffic in negro slaves would be
encountered with a determined opposition, and that the prime agent and
leader of such an expedition must be regarded "with hatred, malice, and
all uncharitableness." At that period (1869) the highest authorities
were adverse to the attempt. An official notice was despatched from the
British Foreign Office to the Consul-General of Egypt that British
subjects belonging to Sir Samuel Baker's expedition must not expect the
support of their government in the event of complications. The
enterprise was generally regarded as chimerical in Europe, with
hostility in Egypt, but with sympathy in America.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 3607
Author: Baker, Samuel White
Release Date: Jan 1, 2003
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/3607_21013de9-5d66-4fba-82ba-c2bd3f2b3d0b.jpg?v=1671256338
how-i-found-livingstone-gb-5157
How I Found Livingstone

How I Found Livingstone\r - Travels, adventures, and discoveres in Central Africa, including an account of four months' residence with Dr. Livingstone, by Henry M. On
attentively studying the materials before me,
however, I perceived that Mr. Richardson had
written in most places with a view to publication;
and that, had he lived, he would soon
have brought what, on a cursory examination,
appeared a mere chaotic mass, into a shape
that would have accorded with his own idea
of a book of travels. Such being the case, I
thought it bestin order to leave the stamp of[vi]
authenticity on this singular record of enterpriseto
do little more than the author would himself
have done. In the form of a diary, thereforewritten
sometimes with Oriental navetthe
reader will here find what may be called the
domestic history of one of the most successful
expeditions undertaken for the exploration of
Central Africa. I believe it would have been
possible to get up a work of more temporary
interest from the same materials; but this could
only have been done by sacrificing truthfulness
of detail. In the present form, Mr. Richardson's
journal will always remain as an authority on
the geography and present condition of a large
portion of the Saharan desert, hitherto unvisited,
at any rate undescribed.
As will be seen, the Mission was accompanied
by two German gentlemen, Drs. Barth and Overwegthe
former, of whom I had the pleasure of
meeting in Egypt, after his enterprising ride
along the coast of Libya. They are still in
Central Africa, pushing their excursions on all
sides, from Bornou into unknown tracts; and
the accounts they may publish on their return
will be anxiously looked for. The great traverse
of the Saharan desert, however, with all its vicissitudes[vii]
and dangers, the physical aspect of that
wonderful region, and the manners of the various
tribes that inhabit it, will, in the present volume,
be found to be fully describednot, it is true,
with much attempt at literary ornament, but in
the vivid though simple language in which a
man sets down impressions which he has just
received. I have endeavoured to remove all the
faults which may be supposed to have arisen
from haste or carelessness, and have necessarily
re-written several passages, and passed a correcting
pen over the whole manuscript. But I think
I may say with confidence, that there is no observation
or statement in the following pages which
cannot be justified by a reference to the original
journals and scattered memoranda.
To me this simple record of daily occurrences
seems highly interesting. It divides
itself, naturally, into a succession of parts of
unequal importance. First comes an account
of the journey to Mourzuk, the capital of Fezzan,
containing the traverse of the frightful Hamadah
or plateau which separates that province from
the regency of Tripoli. Then we have a residence
at Mourzuk itself, Mr. Richardson being
obliged to wait the arrival from Ght of an[viii]
escort of Tuarick chieftains, with whom he had
partly made acquaintance during a former trip
in the desert. This escort appeared after some
delay; and the Mission proceeded across the
Fezzan plains to the independent state of Ght,
through a very wild and picturesque country.
At this point began, if not the most arduous, at
any rate the most dangerous, and at the same
time the most novel, part of the journey. Mr.
Richardson had undertaken, on his way to Soudan
Proper (his first destination), to pass by the
hitherto unexplored kingdom of Aheer or Asben,
situated towards the southern limits of the Sahara.
The march of the Mission across the
deserts that lie between Ght and that territory
was rendered exciting by continual reports of
danger from pursuing freebooters of the Haghar
and Azgher tribes; but the enemy were outstripped,
and no actual attack took place until
the first inhabited districts of Aheer were reached.
Here some lawless tribes levied black-mail,
on the caravan, which was then permitted to
proceed, though in doubt and alarm, until it
arrived under the long-expected protection of
Sheikh En-Noor, one of the great chiefs of the
Kailouee tribes, at his town, or rather encampment,[ix]
of Tintalous. Mr. Richardson's residence
at this place was long and tedious. He suffered,
besides, from the extortionate disposition of the
Sheikh or Sultan, who, however, after considerable
exactions, became his friend. This Saharan
character is brought out by a succession of
amusing touches. But our traveller was impatient
to proceed, and seems to have hailed
with delight the announcement that the great
Salt-Caravan, which annually transports the necessary
condiment from Bilma vi Aheer to
the south, was about to start, and that the
Sheikh and the Christians were to accompany
it. Some further disappointments occurred,
but at length the Mission proceeded to Damerghou,
whence Drs. Barth and Overweg went,
one to Maradee and the other to Kanou, whilst
Mr. Richardson proceeded alone to Zinder,
situated in the province of Damagram. Here
he was well received by the Sarkee, or Governor,
and he dilates with well-founded exultation
on his escape from the insolent and
rapacious Tuaricks. Sad sights, however, connected
with the slave-trade, checked his delight.
During his stay the Sarkee went out in person
to hunt down the subjects of his own sovereign,[x]
that he might pay his debts by selling them
into captivity. After another considerable delay
Mr. Richardson was enabled to start once more,
and being obliged to change his original plan
proceeded to Kuka, the capital of Bornou, by
way of Minyo. Shortly after leaving Gurai,
the chief town of that province, the unfortunate
traveller found his strength to be gradually
giving way. He had already previously
complained of the heat and fatigue, but did
not seem to have felt any great alarm. Now,
however, the climate seems to have told upon
him with sudden and fatal violence. His last
moments are described in a letter from his
fellow-traveller, Dr. Barth, who hastened to the
spot with laudable energy as soon as he heard
of the melancholy catastrophe that had taken
place. Mr. Richardson died at Ungurutua,
about six days' journey from Kuka, the capital
of Bornou, on the 4th of March, 1851, eleven
months after his departure from Tripoli.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 17164
Author: Richardson, James
Release Date: Nov 27, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 17528
Author: Stanley, Henry M. Stanley into the Heart of the Dark Continent

For centuries Africa has been "the dark continent" of our globe. The
sea-washed edges of this immense tract have been known time immemorial.
Egypt, at its northeastern corner, is the oldest of the governments of
the earth; while the nations skirting the Red and the Mediterranean seas
were actors in the earliest recorded history. But Africa as a whole has
been an unknown land.
That it was a fertile land, was demonstrated by the treasures brought
from its depths by those mighty rivers, the Nile, the Niger and the
Congo. That it was populous, was proven by the fact that its native
tribes had furnished to the world without, forty millions of slaves in
the period of two centuries. Both the slave-hunter and the slave told
wondrous tales of the inner depths of the land, but these were mere
hints as to the actual facts of the case. Africa remained a mystery and
a riddle, that seemingly were never to be penetrated.
For many years explorations in Africa were made simply to gratify
curiosity, or from a desire to penetrate beyond lines reached by other
men. All the results desired or expected were amusement or fame. But in
later years African explorations have assumed an entirely different
aspect. From Livingstone, who first began to open up "the dark
continent," to Cameron and Stanley who pierced its very heart, all
explorations have tended to one great endthe civilization and
Christianization of the vast population that inhabits it. No[Pg viii] matter
what the ruling motive may have been in each case, whether, as in
Livingstone, to introduce Christianity; or, in Baker, to put a stop to
the slave trade; or, in Stanley, to unlock the mystery of ages, still
the tendency has been the same: to bring Africa into the family of
continents instead of being the earth's "pariah;" to throw light on this
black spot of our planet, and make those who inhabit it practically and
morally, what they are really, a portion of the human race.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 38389
Author: Headley, Joel Tyler
Release Date: Dec 23, 2011
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Contributor (Author): Johnson, Willis Fletcher, 1857-1931

During this brief interval, our
knowledge of the geography of the country and the
distribution of its waterways has been considerably
extended; important political events have transpired
on both the eastern and western boundaries
of the Congo Free State; commerce has seriously
undertaken the task of exploiting the resources of
the interior; and missions also have been moving
onward, and at the same time have succeeded in
strengthening their old positions.
The length of navigable waterway accessible from
Stanley Pool has already been proved to be more
than 5,000 miles; and there are several important
rivers which flow into the Congo, still to be traced
to their ultimate points, besides tributaries of8
which we know nothing, save that their volumes
promise long navigable channels into the interior.
These unvisited waterways at a very moderate
estimate will add another 1,000 or 1,500 miles to
that wonderful system of natural canals which is
destined to prove such an important factor in the
civilization of this portion of Central Africa. So
important are the facilities afforded by the Congo
water system that, notwithstanding the increased
distance involved, Mr. Stanley has taken advantage
of them in making his attempt to relieve
Emin Pasha, who is encamped at Wadelai on
the Upper Nile; and if the proposed railway
for connecting the Upper with the Lower Congo
does but become an accomplished fact, these waterways
will be the usual routes for communicating
with the Central Soudan, Lakes Albert, Muata
Nzige, and Tanganika, as well as with Nyangwe
and the empire of the Muata Yamvo.
The political event of importance which has
transpired on the western boundary has been the
delimitation of the frontier between the French
territory and that of the Congo Free State, extending
between to sea-coast and Manyanga, and
also the bringing of the dividing line between the
two from 17 East longitude to the right bank of
the Mobangi. These disputed boundaries were9
matters with grave possibilities in their wake till
the signing of the treaty settled the questions involved
and removed all uneasiness. On the eastern
side the loss of Stanley Falls Station and its occupation
by the Arabs was for some time the source
of great anxiety, but a treaty has been entered into
with the principal Arab chief, and if its stipulations
are but observed (and it will be to the interest of
the Arabs to observe them), the result will by no
means be so disastrous as was feared.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 59348
Author: Bentley, W. Till then the country had been little less than a
sealed book to the outside world, and the student of geography
only knew its face as a blank and unknown void. History also stood
silent, giving little information or evidence of what these hidden
recesses in the Dark Continent might contain. What knowledge
the world did have was limited to the coasts, and that only obtained
through the prominence given it by the atrocious slave tradeat
that time the leading feature of its commerce. But what a mighty
change has been wrought since then! To-day, thanks to the missionary
spirit, labors and exploits of Livingstone, who first planted
the germs of Civilization and Christianity within her borders, as well
as to the patient and persevering spirit of the bold and intrepid
Stanley, upon whose shoulders so fitly fell the mantle of the dead
Livingstone, we are in possession of a more comprehensive map of
Africa. History, too, is no longer silent. Her pages now teem
with marvellous accounts of the wonderful regions developed by
these and other daring explorerswith the still more remarkable
tales of the immeasurable wealth lying dormant and quietly awaiting
the developing arms of Commerce. Geography and Science
have also received a mighty impetus through the discoveries made
by these fearless adventurers into the wilds of the Dark Continent;
and to-day we are enabled to record the fact that a satisfactory
solution to the great problems, which for ages have so much mystified
the world, has been arrived at. The return of Stanley and his
followers, with the fruits of their experiences and the light which
they are able to throw upon the subject, will give to the literature
of the world an addition of almost incalculable value. The expedition
will take historic rank with the famous retreat of the ten[vi]
thousand under Xenophon. As the tale unfolds, of the arduous
toils and dangers encountered in the vast African wilderness, wonder
at its success increases.
Though much has been done since Livingstones time to fill up
the blanks of Central Africas physical geography, no expedition
has ever returned with a richer harvest of discoveries than Stanleys
last. The almost impenetrable forest of the Aruwimi, probably the
largest of African forestsextending over four hundred miles of
latitude and longitudewith a dense jungle in all stages of decay,
resounding with the murmurs of monkeys and chimpanzees, strange
noises of birds and animals, and the crashes of troops of elephants
rushing through the dark and tangled copse, is an obstacle that,
once surmounted, gives us the hydrography of the greatest lake-system
of the globe, adds to the giant mountains of geography the
stately and snow-clad Ruwenzori, whose rocky peak towers eighteen
or nineteen thousand feet above sea-level, and to the lakes the
Albert Edward Nyanza, whence issues the mysterious stream which
fertilizes Egypt and makes the valley of the Nile the most marvellous
seat of human culture, art and science.
In Stanleys Story the reader has presented a most thrilling
narrative of the terrible experiences encountered, as well as a
graphic account of these wonderful discoveries and the amazing
achievements accomplished by Mr. Stanley during his career in
Africa. The subjectone of unparalleled interestis presented in
the characteristic style of the writer, from thoroughly reliable information,
data, and the official reports of Mr. Stanley himself. It
favorably commends itself to every lover of geographical science,
as well as to the admirer of the marvellous in life and nature. It
has been prepared in a popular form, and at a price much lower
than books of like character and value, and very much lower than
others which claim to give the story of Stanley in Africa, but are
simply compilations from the writings of the different explorers who
have in times past essayed to traverse its vast interior, and failed.
Stanley, however, has not failed. Fate has decreed otherwise. His
story has been told. It is the only authentic story, as recorded in
these pages, and the reader will find it not only interesting but
highly entertaining and thoroughly instructive throughout.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 61496
Author: Feather, A. Native caravans, if
lightly laden, can accomplish it in twenty-five days,
including four halts. The maximum altitude observed
by B. P. therm. was 4050 feet, the minimum 2850.
This region contains the two great divisions of Unyamwezi
and Uvinza.
The name of Unyamwezi was first heard by the
Portuguese, according to Giovanni Botero, towards the
end of the sixteenth century, or about 1589. Pigafetta,
who, in 1591, systematised the discoveries of the
earlier Portuguese, placed the empire of Monemugi
or Munimigi in a vast triangular area, whose limits
were Monomotapa, Congo, and Abyssinia: from his
pages it appears that the people of this central kingdom
were closely connected by commerce with the towns on
the eastern coast of Africa. According to Dapper, the
Dutch historian, (1671,) whose work has been the great
mine of information to subsequent writers upon Africa
south of the equator, about sixty days journey from
the Atlantic is the kingdom of Monemugi, which others
call Nimeamaye, a name still retained under the corrupted
form Nimeaye in our atlases. M. Malte-Brun,
senior, mentioning Mounemugi, adds, ou, selon
une autographe plus authentique, Mou-nimougi. All
the Portuguese authors call the people Monemugi or
Mono-emugi; Mr. Cooley prefers Monomoezi, which he
derives from Munha Munge, or lord of the world, the
title of a great African king in the interior, commemorated
by the historian De Barros. Mr. Macqueen (Geography
of Central Africa), who also gives Manmoise,
declares that Mueno-muge, Mueno-muize, Monomoise,
[3]
and Uniamese, relate to the same place and people,
comprehending a large extent of country in the interior
of Africa: he explains the word erroneously to mean
the great Moises or Movisas. The Rev. Mr. Erhardt
asserts that for facility of pronunciation the coast merchants
have turned the name Wanamesi into Waniamesi,
which also leads his readers into error. The
Rev. Mr. Livingstone thus endorses the mistake of
Messrs. Macqueen and Erhardt: The names Monomoizes,
spelt also Monemuigis and Monomuizes, and
Monomotapistas, when applied to the tribes, are exactly
the same as if we should call the Scotch the Lord
Douglases.... Monomoizes was formed from Moiza or
Muiza, the singular of the word Babisa or Aiza, the
proper name of a large tribe to the north. In these
sentences there is a confusion between the lands of the
Wanyamwezi, lying under the parallel of the Tanganyika
Lake, and the Wabisa (in the singular Mbs, the
Wavisa of the Rev. Mr. Rebmann), a well-known commercial
tribe dwelling about the Maravi or Nyassa Lake,
S.W. of Kilwa, whose name in times of old was corrupted
by the Portuguese to Movizas or Movisas.
Finally M. Guillain, in a work already alluded to, states
correctly the name of the people to be Oua-nyamouczi,
but in designating the country pays de Nyamouezi,
he shows little knowledge of the Zangian dialects.
M. V. A. Malte-Brun, junior (Bulletin de Gographie,
Paris, 1856, Part II. p. 295) correctly writes
Wanyamwezi.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 66813
Author: Burton, Richard Francis
Release Date: Nov 24, 2021
Format: eBook
Language: English

Now in paperback: the powerful, revelatory New York Times and Publishers Weekly bestseller, shortlisted for the Financial Times Best Business Book of the Year Award.

An unflinching investigation reveals the human rights abuses behind the Congo's cobalt mining operation--and the moral implications that affect us all.

Cobalt Red is the searing, first-ever exposé of the immense toll taken on the people and environment of the Democratic Republic of the Congo by cobalt mining, as told through the testimonies of the Congolese people themselves. Activist and researcher Siddharth Kara has traveled deep into cobalt territory to document the testimonies of the people living, working, and dying for cobalt. To uncover the truth about brutal mining practices, Kara investigated militia-controlled mining areas, traced the supply chain of child-mined cobalt from toxic pit to consumer-facing tech giants, and gathered shocking testimonies of people who endure immense suffering and even die mining cobalt.

Cobalt is an essential component to every lithium-ion rechargeable battery made today, the batteries that power our smartphones, tablets, laptops, and electric vehicles. Roughly 75 percent of the world's supply of cobalt is mined in the Congo, often by peasants and children in sub-human conditions. The Congo was at last being set free from Belgium--one of seventeen countries to gain independence in 1960 from ruling European powers. At the helm as prime minister was charismatic nationalist Patrice Lumumba. Just days after the handover, however, the Congo's new army mutinied, Belgian forces intervened, and Lumumba turned to the United Nations for help in saving his newborn nation from what the press was already calling "the Congo crisis." Dag Hammarskjöld, the tidy Swede serving as UN secretary-general, quickly arranged the organization's biggest peacekeeping mission in history. But chaos was still spreading. Frustrated with the fecklessness of the UN and spurned by the United States, Lumumba then approached the Soviets for help--an appeal that set off alarm bells at the CIA. To forestall the spread of Communism in Africa, the CIA sent word to its station chief in the Congo, Larry Devlin: Lumumba had to go.

Within a year, everything would unravel. The CIA plot to murder Lumumba would fizzle out, but he would be deposed in a CIA-backed coup, transferred to enemy territory in a CIA-approved operation, and shot dead by Congolese assassins. Hammarskjöld, too, would die, in a mysterious plane crash en route to negotiate a cease-fire with the Congo's rebellious southeast. And a young, ambitious military officer named Joseph Mobutu, who had once sworn fealty to Lumumba, would seize power with U.S. help and misrule the country for more than three decades. For the Congolese people, the events of 1960-61 represented the opening chapter of a long horror story. For the U.S. government, however, they provided a playbook for future interventions.

Author: Stuart A. Though the killing was low-tech--largely by machete--it was carried out at shocking speed: some 800,000 people were exterminated in a hundred days. A Tutsi pastor, in a letter to his church president, a Hutu, used the chilling phrase that gives Gourevitch his title.

With keen dramatic intensity, Gourevitch frames the genesis and horror of Rwanda's "genocidal logic" in the anguish of its aftermath: the mass displacements, the temptations of revenge and the quest for justice, the impossibly crowded prisons and refugee camps. Through intimate portraits of Rwandans in all walks of life, he focuses on the psychological and political challenges of survival and on how the new leaders of postcolonial Africa went to war in the Congo when resurgent genocidal forces threatened to overrun central Africa.

Can a country composed largely of perpetrators and victims create a cohesive national society?
