If my
account should not entirely harmonise with preconceived notions as to
primitive races, I cannot help it. I profess accurately to describe native
AfricaAfrica in those places where it has not received the
slightest impulse, whether for good or evil, from European civilisation.
If the picture be a dark one, we should, when contemplating these sons of
Noah, try and carry our mind back to that time when our poor elder brother
Ham was cursed by his father, and condemned to be the slave of both Shem
and Japheth; for as they were then, so they appear to be nowa
strikingly existing proof of the Holy Scriptures. But one thing must be
remembered: Whilst the people of Europe and Asia were blessed by communion
with God through the medium of His prophets, and obtained divine laws to
regulate their ways and keep them in mind of Him who made them, the
Africans were excluded from this dispensation, and consequently have no
idea of an overruling Providence or a future state; they therefore trust
to luck and to charms, and think only of self-preservation in this world.
Whatever, then, may be said against them for being too avaricious or too
destitute of fellow-feeling, should rather reflect on ourselves, who have
been so much better favoured, yet have neglected to teach them, than on
those who, whilst they are sinning, know not what they are doing. To say a
negro is incapable of instruction, is a mere absurdity; for those few boys
who have been educated in our schools have proved themselves even quicker
than our own at learning; whilst, amongst themselves, the deepness of
their cunning and their power of repartee are quite surprising, and are
especially shown in their proficiency for telling lies most appropriately
in preference to truth, and with an off-handed manner that makes them most
      amusing.

With these remarks, I now give, as an appropriate introduction to my
narrative(1.) An account of the general geographical features of
the countries we are about to travel in, leaving the details to be treated
under each as we successively pass through them; (2.) A general view of
the atmospheric agents which wear down and so continually help to reduce
      the continent, yet at the same time assist to clothe it with vegetation;
(3.) A general view of the Flora; and, lastly, that which consumes it,
(4.) Its Fauna; ending with a few special remarks on the Wanguana, or men
      freed from slavery.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 3284
Author: Speke, John Hanning
Release Date: Jun 1, 2002
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/3284_f40848e6-3437-45e0-bb2f-56fc9a4bd73f.jpg?v=1671255510
sketches-of-the-east-africa-campaign-gb-10362
Sketches of the East Africa Campaign

Sketches of the East Africa Campaign

These sketches of General Smuts' campaign of 1916 in German East
Africa, do not presume to give an accurate account of the tactical
or strategical events of this war. The actual knowledge of the
happenings of war and of the considerations that persuade an Army
Commander to any course of military conduct must, of necessity, be
a closed book to the individual soldier. To the fighting man
himself and to the man on the lines of communication, who helps to
feed and clothe and arm and doctor him, the history of his
particular war is very meagre. War, to the soldier, is limited to
the very narrow horizon of his front, the daily work of his
regiment, or, at the most, of his brigade. Rarely does news from
the rest of one brigade spread to the troops of another in the
field. Only in the hospital that serves the division are the events
of his bit of war correlated and reduced to a comprehensive whole.
Even then the resulting knowledge is usually wrong. For the
imagination of officers, and of men in particular, is wonderful,
and rumour has its birthplace in the hospital ward. One may take it
as an established fact that the ordinary regimental officer or
soldier knows little or nothing about events other than his
particular bit of country. Only the Staff know, and they will not
tell. Sometimes we have thought that all the real news lives in the
cloistered brain of the General and his Chief of Staff. Be this as
it may, we always got fuller and better correlated and co-ordinated
news of the German East African Campaign from "Reuter" or from
The Times weekly edition.
But if the soldier in the forward division knows nothing of the
strategical events of his war, there are many things of which he
does know, and so well too that they eclipse the greater
strategical considerations of the war. He does know the food he
eats and the food that he would like to eat; moreover, he knew, in
German East Africa, what his rations ought to be, and how to do
without them. He learnt how to fight and march and carry heavy
equipment on a very empty stomach. He learnt to eke out his meagre
supplies by living on the wild game of the country, the native
flour, bananas and mangoes. He knew what it meant to have dysentery
and malaria. He had marched under a broiling sun by day and
shivered in the tropic dews at night. He knew what it was to sleep
upon the ground; to hunt for shade from the vertical sun. These and
many other things did he know, and herein lies the chief interest
of this or of any other campaign.
For, strange as it may seem, the soldier in East Africa was more
concerned about his food and clothing, the tea he thirsted for, the
blisters that tormented his weary feet, the equipment that was so
heavy, the sleep that drugged his footsteps on the march, the lion
that sniffed around his drowsy head at night, than about the actual
fighting. These are the real points of personal interest in any
campaign, and if these sketches bear upon the questions of food,
the matter of transport, the manner of the soldier's illness, the
hospitals he stayed in, the tsetse fly that bit him by day, the
mosquitoes that made his nights a perfect torment, they are the
more true to life. For fights are few, and, in this thick bush
country, frequently degenerate into blind firing into a blinder
bush; but the "jigger" flea is with the soldier always.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 10362
Author: Dolbey, Robert Valentine
Release Date: Dec 1, 2003
Format: eBook
Language: English

In Africa: Hunting Adventures in the Big Game Country

This collection of African stories has no pretentious
purpose. So much has been written,
so many facts are upon record about every
country, even the most remote, that a
judicious and persevering study of existing
materials would no doubt enable a reader to
fill himself with knowledge almost to repletion
without leaving his chair. But for the formation
of opinion, for the stirring and enlivenment
of thought, and for the discernment of colour
and proportion, the gifts of travel, especially
of travel on foot, are priceless. It was with
the design and in the hope of securing such
prizes, that I undertook last year the pilgrimage
of which these pages give account. I cannot
tell whether I have succeeded in winning
vi
them; and still less whether, if won, they are
transferable. I therefore view these letters with
a modest eye. They were written mainly in
long hot Uganda afternoons, after the day's
march was done. The larger portion has
already appeared in the Strand Magazine, and
what has been added was necessary to complete
the story.
They present a continuous narrative of the
lighter side of what was to me a very delightful
and inspiring journey; and it is in the hope
that they may vivify and fortify the interest of
the British people in the wonderful estates
they have recently acquired in the northeastern
quarter of Africa, that I offer them in
a connected form to the indulgence of the
public.

Winston Spencer Churchill
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 43035
Author: Churchill, Winston
Release Date: Jun 25, 2013
Format: eBook
Language: English

A White King in East Africa\r - The Remarkable Adventures of John Boyes, Trader and Soldier of Fortune, Who Became King of the Savage Wa-Kikuyu

The following pages describe a life of
adventure in the more remote parts of
Africaadventures such as the explorer
and sportsmen do not generally encounter. This is
the daybook, the diary, the narrative, the incident, and the adventure
of an African sculptor and an African biographer, whose observations
we hope may be preserved in imperishable form, so that when the animal
life of Africa has vanished, future generations may realize in some
degree the beauty and grandeur which the world has lost.
Sculptor and Biographer of the vanishing wild life of AfricaI do not
feel that I can adequately and truthfully characterize Carl E. The sculptor is a biographer and an historian.
Without sculpture we should know far less of the vanished greatness of
Greece than we do. Through sculpture Carl E. Akeley is recording the
vanishing greatness of the natural world of Africa. The ultimate aim was to establish a training school for African elephants.

Following in the footsteps of the four elephants, Roberts pieces together the story of this long-forgotten expedition, in travels that take her to Belgium, Iraq, India, Tanzania, and Congo. He soon expelled Uganda's Indian minority in hopes of fostering a nation for Black Ugandans. The plan backfired. Amin was followed by Yoweri Museveni, who has now ruled for nearly four decades. Whereas Amin tried to create a Black nation out of the majority, Museveni sought to fragment this majority into multiple ethnic minorities, re-creating a version of colonial indirect rule.

Slow Poison is Mamdani's firsthand report on the tragic unraveling of his country's struggle for decolonialization. A witness to East Africa's endlessly intricate power plays, and one of the most insightful political philosophers of his generation, Mamdani casts a learned and wary eye on Amin, internationally depicted as a buffoon; the radical scholar Museveni; and the global heavyweights that exploited and manipulated Uganda before and after its independence.

Each leader made violence central to his project, but Mamdani sees a signal difference between Amin, who retained popular support to the end, and Museveni, who has not. The Asian expulsion made Amin a monster in the eyes of the West. In contrast, Museveni was hailed as standard bearer of the "war on terror" in Africa and was protected from accountability for far greater crimes. In exchange for adopting the package of neoliberal reforms known as the Washington Consensus, he became Africa's poster child. Amin, who aimed to create a nation of Black millionaires, never became one himself. Meanwhile, Uganda's surrender to privatization has brought Museveni's family immense wealth, even as the country remains one of the world's poorest.

Author: Mahmood Mamdani
Publisher: Belknap Press
Published: 10/14/2025
Pages: 352
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.40lbs
Size: 9.30h x 6.30w x 1.30d
ISBN: 9780674299870

About the Author
Mamdani, Mahmood: - Mahmood Mamdani is Herbert Lehman Professor of Government and Professor of Anthropology and Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies at Columbia University. So I want to invite you on a pilgrimage. Rwanda is often held up as a model of evangelization in Africa. Yet in 1994, beginning on the Thursday of Easter week, Christians killed other Christians, often in the same churches where they had worshiped together. The most Christianized country in Africa became the site of its worst genocide. With a mother who was a Hutu and a father who was a Tutsi, author Emmanuel Katongole is uniquely qualified to point out that the tragedy in Rwanda is also a mirror reflecting the deep brokenness of the church in the West. Rwanda brings us to a cry of lament on our knees where together we learn that we must interrupt these patterns of brokenness But Rwanda also brings us to a place of hope. Indeed, the only hope for our world after Rwanda's genocide is a new kind of Christian identity for the global body of Christ--a people on pilgrimage together, a mixed group, bearing witness to a new identity made possible by the Gospel.

Author: Emmanuel M. He explains how the conflict in Darfur began as a civil war between nomadic and peasant tribes over fertile land in the south, triggered by a severe drought that had expanded the Sahara Desert by more than sixty miles in forty years; how British colonial officials had artificially tribalized Darfur, dividing its population; and how the war intensified in the 1990s when the Sudanese government tried unsuccessfully to address the problem by creating homelands for tribes without any. The involvement of opposition parties gave rise in 2003 to two rebel movements, leading to a brutal insurgency and a horrific counterinsurgency--but not to genocide, as the West declared.

Mamdani also shows how the Cold War exacerbated the twenty-year civil war in neighboring Chad, creating a confrontation between Libya's Muammar al-Qaddafi and the Reagan administration that spilled over into Darfur and militarized the fighting. By 2003, the war involved national, regional, and global forces, including the powerful Western lobby, who now saw it as part of the War on Terror.

Incisive and authoritative, Saviors and Survivors will radically alter our understanding of the crisis in Darfur.

Author: Mahmood Mamdani
Publisher: Crown Publishing Group (NY)
Published: 05/25/2010
Pages: 416
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 1.00lbs
Size: 8.00h x 5.20w x 0.90d
ISBN: 9780385525961

Review Citation(s):
New York Times Book Review 07/18/2010 pg. 24
Reference and Research Bk News 08/01/2010 pg. 58

About the Author
Mahmood Mamdani is Herbert Lehman Professor of Government and a member of the departments of anthropology, political science, and Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures (MEALAC) at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. In the first pan-imperial history of the early French Empire in the English language, Mélanie Lamotte shows how an increasingly cohesive legal culture came to govern the lives of enslaved and free people of African, Malagasy, South Asian, and Native American descent. She also illuminates the important role played by these populations in the development of the empire, from Louisiana to Guadeloupe, Senegambia, Madagascar, Isle Bourbon, and India.

The early French Empire has often been portrayed as a fragmented conglomerate of isolated colonies or regions. Yet Lamotte shows that racial policies issued by the metropole, as well as by officials in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, significantly influenced one another. Rather than focusing on the actions of administrators, however, Lamotte also reveals the extensive influence of people on the ground--especially those of non-European descent. Through their sexuality and their labor, along with their socio-economic and political endeavors, they played a critical role in building the empire and setting its limits. As they sought justice for themselves, strove to protect their kin, and aimed to improve their social conditions, these individuals also pushed against the advancement of white dominion in unexpected ways.

Archivally rich and rigorously documented, By Flesh and Toil illuminates the transoceanic connections that united the French colonial world--and recasts people of African, Malagasy, South Asian, and Native American descent as key actors in the story of empire-building.

Author: Mélanie Lamotte
Publisher: Harvard University Press
Published: 01/27/2026
Pages: 368
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.43lbs
Size: 9.58h x 6.42w x 1.21d
ISBN: 9780674272835

About the Author
Lamotte, Mélanie: - Mélanie Lamotte is Assistant Professor of History at Duke University.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_c8891ef5-937e-42ba-a5d8-96490fcc1c27.jpg?v=1775555732
the-kebra-negast-the-book-of-the-glory-of-kings-with-15-original-illustrations-aziloth-books-9781909735019
The Kebra Negast (the Book of the Glory of Kings), with 15 original illustrations (Aziloth Books)

The 'Kebra Nagast' (Glory of Kings) was written at least one thousand years ago, and takes its theme from much older sources, some going back to the first century AD. Written originally in the African classical language Ge'ez, the book tells the history of a Davidic line of African monarchs, descended from King Solomon of Israel and Maqeda, Queen of Sheba (Saba), who journeyed to the Levant specifically to visit the wise and far-famed monarch. It was a successful meeting of minds, and Maqeda proved the equal of Solomon the Wise in a series of long philosophical discussions. But the Hebrew monarch was not merely attracted to the African Queen's intellect - by means of a ploy, he seduced Maqeda, who gave birth to a son, Ebna-Lahakim. But this seduction proved to be Solomon's undoing. While in Israel, Prince Ebna-Lahakim gathered around him a group of royal nobles and together they seized the two most powerful symbols of Israel's compact with the Almighty - the Ark of the Covenant and the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments. These trophies were carried back to Abyssinia where, it is said, they remain to this day.

Author: E. a. Written as both a participant in Sudan's 2018-19 uprising and a working psychotherapist, Khougali weaves together a history of the Sudanese Left, an account of the current war and the racialized financialization that informed the various factions, alongside the development of a new clinical modality he calls "praxis psychotherapy."

Refusing the reductive binaries of international media coverage and the moral puritanism he sees paralyzing contemporary leftist thought, Khougali argues that Sudan cannot be understood apart from a longer "irrational revolution" linking Khartoum to Darfur, and Sudan to Palestine, through the same circuits of imperial accumulation and waste.
