In the case of a ship this excitement is shared by many thousands,
who have assembled to acclaim the birth of a perfected product of the
industry of man; the emotion is shared by all those who are present. It is
very different when a book has been completed. The launching has been
arranged for and completed by expert hands; she like the ship gathers way
and slides forth into an ocean: but, unlike the ship which is certain to
float, the waters may close over and engulf her, or perchance she may be
towed back to that haven of obscurity from which she emerged, to rust there
in silence and neglect. There is excitement in the breast of one man
aloneto wit, the author. If his book possesses one supreme qualification
she will escape the fate mentioned, and this qualification isinterest. As
the weeks lengthened into months, andviii these multiplied themselves to the
tale of something like twenty-four, the conviction was strengthened that
that which had so profoundly interested the writer, would not be altogether
indifferent to others. For some inscrutable reason the deeds of sea-robbers
have always possessed a fascination denied to those of their more numerous
brethren of the land; and in the case of the Sea-wolves of the sixteenth
century we are dealing with the very aristocrats of the profession.
Circumstances over which they had no control flung the Moslem population of
Southern Spain on to the shores of Northern Africa: to revenge themselves
upon the Christian foe by whom this expropriation had been accomplished was
natural to a warrior race; and those who heretofore had been land-folk pure
and simple took to piracy as a means of livelihood. It is of the deeds of
these men that this book treats; of their marvellous triumphs, of their
apparently hopeless defeats, of the manner in which they audaciously
maintained themselves against the principalities and the powers of
Christendom always hungering for their destruction.
The quality which Napoleon is said to have ascribed to the British
Infantry, of never knowing when they were beaten, seems to have also
characterised the Sea-wolves; as witness the marvellous recuperation of
Kheyr-ed-Din Barbarossaix when expelled from Tunis by Charles V.; and the
escape of Dragut from the island of Jerba when apparently hopelessly
trapped by the Genoese admiral, Andrea Doria. All through their history the
leaders of the Sea-wolves show the resourcefulness of the real seamen that
they had become by force of circumstances, and it was they who in the age
in which they dwelt showed what sea power really meant. Sailing through the
Mediterranean on my way to Malta in the spring of this year, as the good
ship fared onwards I passed in succession all those lurking-places from
which the Moslem Corsairs were wont to burst out upon their prey. Truly it
seemed as if
and in imagination one pictured the rush of the pirate galley, with its
naked slaves straining at the oar of their taskmasters, its fierce,
reckless, beturbaned crew clustered on the rambades at the bow and stern.
It might be that they would capture some hapless round-ship, a
merchantman lumbering slowly along the coast; or again they might meet with
a galley of the terrible Knights of St. John or of the ever-redoubtable
Doria. In either case the Sea-wolves were equal to their fortune, to
plunder or to fight in the name of Allah and his prophet.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 13689
Author: Currey, E. On
attentively studying the materials before me,
however, I perceived that Mr. Richardson had
written in most places with a view to publication;
and that, had he lived, he would soon
have brought what, on a cursory examination,
appeared a mere chaotic mass, into a shape
that would have accorded with his own idea
of a book of travels. Such being the case, I
thought it bestin order to leave the stamp of[vi]
authenticity on this singular record of enterpriseto
do little more than the author would himself
have done. In the form of a diary, thereforewritten
sometimes with Oriental navetthe
reader will here find what may be called the
domestic history of one of the most successful
expeditions undertaken for the exploration of
Central Africa. I believe it would have been
possible to get up a work of more temporary
interest from the same materials; but this could
only have been done by sacrificing truthfulness
of detail. In the present form, Mr. Richardson's
journal will always remain as an authority on
the geography and present condition of a large
portion of the Saharan desert, hitherto unvisited,
at any rate undescribed.
As will be seen, the Mission was accompanied
by two German gentlemen, Drs. Barth and Overwegthe
former, of whom I had the pleasure of
meeting in Egypt, after his enterprising ride
along the coast of Libya. They are still in
Central Africa, pushing their excursions on all
sides, from Bornou into unknown tracts; and
the accounts they may publish on their return
will be anxiously looked for. The great traverse
of the Saharan desert, however, with all its vicissitudes[vii]
and dangers, the physical aspect of that
wonderful region, and the manners of the various
tribes that inhabit it, will, in the present volume,
be found to be fully describednot, it is true,
with much attempt at literary ornament, but in
the vivid though simple language in which a
man sets down impressions which he has just
received. I have endeavoured to remove all the
faults which may be supposed to have arisen
from haste or carelessness, and have necessarily
re-written several passages, and passed a correcting
pen over the whole manuscript. But I think
I may say with confidence, that there is no observation
or statement in the following pages which
cannot be justified by a reference to the original
journals and scattered memoranda.
To me this simple record of daily occurrences
seems highly interesting. It divides
itself, naturally, into a succession of parts of
unequal importance. First comes an account
of the journey to Mourzuk, the capital of Fezzan,
containing the traverse of the frightful Hamadah
or plateau which separates that province from
the regency of Tripoli. Then we have a residence
at Mourzuk itself, Mr. Richardson being
obliged to wait the arrival from Ght of an[viii]
escort of Tuarick chieftains, with whom he had
partly made acquaintance during a former trip
in the desert. This escort appeared after some
delay; and the Mission proceeded across the
Fezzan plains to the independent state of Ght,
through a very wild and picturesque country.
At this point began, if not the most arduous, at
any rate the most dangerous, and at the same
time the most novel, part of the journey. Mr.
Richardson had undertaken, on his way to Soudan
Proper (his first destination), to pass by the
hitherto unexplored kingdom of Aheer or Asben,
situated towards the southern limits of the Sahara.
The march of the Mission across the
deserts that lie between Ght and that territory
was rendered exciting by continual reports of
danger from pursuing freebooters of the Haghar
and Azgher tribes; but the enemy were outstripped,
and no actual attack took place until
the first inhabited districts of Aheer were reached.
Here some lawless tribes levied black-mail,
on the caravan, which was then permitted to
proceed, though in doubt and alarm, until it
arrived under the long-expected protection of
Sheikh En-Noor, one of the great chiefs of the
Kailouee tribes, at his town, or rather encampment,[ix]
of Tintalous. Mr. Richardson's residence
at this place was long and tedious. He suffered,
besides, from the extortionate disposition of the
Sheikh or Sultan, who, however, after considerable
exactions, became his friend. This Saharan
character is brought out by a succession of
amusing touches. But our traveller was impatient
to proceed, and seems to have hailed
with delight the announcement that the great
Salt-Caravan, which annually transports the necessary
condiment from Bilma vi Aheer to
the south, was about to start, and that the
Sheikh and the Christians were to accompany
it. Some further disappointments occurred,
but at length the Mission proceeded to Damerghou,
whence Drs. Barth and Overweg went,
one to Maradee and the other to Kanou, whilst
Mr. Richardson proceeded alone to Zinder,
situated in the province of Damagram. Here
he was well received by the Sarkee, or Governor,
and he dilates with well-founded exultation
on his escape from the insolent and
rapacious Tuaricks. Sad sights, however, connected
with the slave-trade, checked his delight.
During his stay the Sarkee went out in person
to hunt down the subjects of his own sovereign,[x]
that he might pay his debts by selling them
into captivity. After another considerable delay
Mr. Richardson was enabled to start once more,
and being obliged to change his original plan
proceeded to Kuka, the capital of Bornou, by
way of Minyo. Shortly after leaving Gurai,
the chief town of that province, the unfortunate
traveller found his strength to be gradually
giving way. He had already previously
complained of the heat and fatigue, but did
not seem to have felt any great alarm. Now,
however, the climate seems to have told upon
him with sudden and fatal violence. His last
moments are described in a letter from his
fellow-traveller, Dr. Barth, who hastened to the
spot with laudable energy as soon as he heard
of the melancholy catastrophe that had taken
place. Mr. Richardson died at Ungurutua,
about six days' journey from Kuka, the capital
of Bornou, on the 4th of March, 1851, eleven
months after his departure from Tripoli.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 17164
Author: Richardson, James
Release Date: Nov 27, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

Von Tripolis nach Alexandrien - 1. From the days when Barbarossa defied the
whole strength of the Emperor Charles V., to the
early part of the present century, when prizes were
taken by Algerine rovers under the guns, so to say,
of all the fleets of Europe, the Corsairs were masters
of the narrow seas, and dictated their own terms to
all comers. Nothing but the creation of the large
standing navies of the present age crippled them;
nothing less than the conquest of their too convenient
coasts could have thoroughly suppressed
them. During those three centuries they levied
blackmail upon all who had any trading interest in
the Mediterranean. The Venetians, Genoese, Pisans
in older days; the English, French, Dutch, Danish,
Swedish, and American Governments in modern
times, purchased security by the payment of a[Pg4]
regular tribute, or by the periodical presentation of
costly gifts. The penalty of resistance was too well
known to need exemplification; thousands of Christian
slaves in the bagnios at Algiers bore witness
to the consequences of an independent policy. So
long as the nations of Europe continued to quarrel
among themselves, instead of presenting a united line
of battle to the enemy, such humiliations had to be
endured; so long as a Corsair raid upon Spain suited
the policy of France; so long as the Dutch, in their
jealousy of other states, could declare that Algiers
was necessary to them; there was no chance of the
plague subsiding; and it was not till the close of
the great Napoleonic wars that the Powers agreed,
at the Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1818, to act
together, and do away with the scourge of Christendom.
And even then little was accomplished till
France combined territorial aggrandizement with the
rle of a civilizing influence.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 22169
Author: Kelley, J. The noble king, the subtle Roman, Verus, the gallant
warrior, Zazo, Hilda, the beautiful, fearless Ostrogoth Princess, the
wily Justinian, his unscrupulous Empress, Theodora, and their brave,
impetuous general, Belisarius, are clearly portrayed; and, underlying
the whole drama, surges the fierce warfare between Roman Catholic and
Arian, while the place and the period in which the scenes of the
romance are laid, both comparatively little known, lend a peculiar
charm and freshness to the gifted author's narrative.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 32461
Author: Dahn, Felix
Release Date: May 20, 2010
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Translator: Safford, Mary J.

N, merc
[viii]
la bont vostra, rester vana,
o Madama, la nostra intenzione.

Nell'autunno scorso noi abbiamo conosciuto
qui di persona un Principe Mammelucco
egiziano, di nome Ali Bey di Solimano.
Era egli uno de' ventiquattro Bey,
ossieno Principi, che formavano l'aristocrazia
militare straniera imperante in Egitto
prima che alle invasioni francese ed inglese
succedesse in quella s celebre ed importante
Provincia lo stabilimento del dominio assoluto
del Gran Signore. Il nostro Ali Bey dagli avvenimenti
condotto in Europa, ha avuto campo
d'apprenderne varie lingue, di erudirsi negli
[x]
elementi di varie scienze, e sopra tutto
di conoscere e ben meditare sui nostri costumi,
sulle arti e leggi nostre. N v'ha
dubbio che se la fortuna avesse a restituirlo
allo stato, in cui trovossi quando l'ultima
volta l'armata turca pose piede in Egitto,
e fu tra il Visire e i Mammelucchi stipulato
accordo, essendo allora egli capo de' Mammelucchi,
e signore del Cairo, non adoperasse
gli acquistati lumi per introdurre in
quel paese utili istituzioni, e fondare,
com'egli diceva, sulla base della civilt
de' Cofti, e della libert pubblica, un imperio
benefico.
paesi dell'Oriente, avendo in quella occasione
vedute parecchie citt poste sul mar
[xi]

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 47664
Author: Ali Bey, 1766-1818
Release Date: Dec 14, 2014
Format: eBook
Language: Italian

Once the vanguard leader, the Parisian avant-garde now considered him passé. His important early collectors, including Gertrude and Leo Stein, had stopped buying his work and were fully championing Picasso, and he had exhibited little in the last few years. In the face of Cubism that was now dominating the art scene, Matisse needed to get away from Paris in order to advance his distinctive artistic vision.

Almost on a whim, he went to Tangier. Matisse had already been profoundly inspired by Islamic art, and was primed for his arrival in the Moroccan city where such art was integrated into everyday life. Despite the challenges of rain, insomnia, depression, and finding models, the sojourn was such a success he returned the following winter, which would lead to even greater artistic triumph.

Matisse in Morocco tells the story of the artist's groundbreaking time in Tangier and how it altered Matisse's development as a painter and indelibly marked his work for the next four decades. Through Koehler's research and travel, we experience Matisse's time in Tangier, the paintings and their subjects, his relationships with his wife Amélie and his two important collectiors, and then come to understand the impact Morocco--its light, colors, culture, and artistic traditions--had on his art. In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern reader can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. That first year of the Allied war was a pivotal point in American history, the moment when the United States began to act like a great power.

Beginning with the daring amphibious invasion in November 1942, An Army at Dawn follows the American and British armies as they fight the French in Morocco and Algeria, and then take on the Germans and Italians in Tunisia. Central to the tale are the extraordinary but fallible commanders who come to dominate the battlefield: Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, Montgomery, and Rommel.

Brilliantly researched, rich with new material and vivid insights, Atkinson's narrative provides the definitive history of the war in North Africa.

Author: Rick Atkinson
Publisher: Holt Paperbacks
Published: 05/15/2007
Pages: 736
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 1.25lbs
Size: 8.20h x 5.50w x 1.50d
ISBN: 9780805087246

About the Author

Rick Atkinson, recipient of the 2010 Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing, is the bestselling author of The Day Of Battle, The Long Gray Line, and In the Company of Soldiers. Hannibal, a daring African general from the city of Carthage, led an army of warriors and battle elephants over the snowy Alps to invade the very heart of Rome's growing empire. But what kind of person would dare to face the most relentless imperial power of the ancient world? How could Hannibal, consistently outnumbered and always deep in enemy territory, win battle after battle until he held the very fate of Rome within his grasp?

Hannibal appeals to many as the ultimate underdog-a Carthaginian David against the Goliath of Rome-but it wasn't just his genius on the battlefield that set him apart. As a military leader, like Alexander the Great before him and Julius Caesar after, he understood the hearts of men and had an uncanny ability to read the unseen weaknesses of his enemy. As a commander in war, Hannibal has few equals in history and has long been held as a model of strategic and tactical genius. But Hannibal was much more than just a great general. The conquered territory was larger than the Roman Empire at its greatest expansion, and it was claimed for the Arabs in roughly half the time. How they were able to engulf so many empires, states, and armies in such a short period of time is a question which has engaged historians since at least the ninth century. Most recent popular accounts have been based almost solely on the early Muslim sources, which were, in short, salvation history, composed for the purpose of demonstrating that God had chosen the Arabs as his vehicle for spreading Islam throughout the world.
While exploiting the rich biographical and geographical information of the early Muslim sources, this groundbreaking work delivers a fresh account of the Arab conquests and the establishment of an Islamic Empire by incorporating different approaches and different bodies of evidence. Robert G. Hoyland, a leading Late Antique scholar, accomplishes this by first examining the wider world from which Mohammed and his followers emerged. For Muslim sources, the revelation of Islam to Muhammad is the starting point for their history, and modern university departments have tended to reinforce this approach. Late Antique studies have done us the service of shedding much needed light on the 4th to 6th centuries, thus giving us a better view of the nature of Middle Eastern society in the decades before the Arab conquests. In particular, Hoyland narrates the emergence of a distinct Arab identity in the region of the Roman province Arabia and western (Saudi) Arabia, which is at least as important for explaining the Arab conquests as Muhammad's revelation. The Arabs are the principal, almost sole, focus of the Muslim conquest narratives, and this is the norm for modern works on this subject. Yet, in the same period the Khazars, Bulgars, Avars and Turks established polities on the edges of the superpowers of Byzantium and Iran; in fact, the Khazars and Turks continued to be major rivals of the Arabs in the seventh and eighth centuries. On a narrow plain near the Southern Italian town of Cannae, despite outnumbering their opponents almost two to one, a massive Roman army was crushed by the heterogeneous forces of Hannibal, the Carthaginian general who had spectacularly crossed the Alps into Italy two years earlier. The scale of the losses at Cannae -- 50,000 Roman men killed -- was unrivaled until the industrialized slaughter of the First World War. Although the Romans eventually recovered and Carthage lost the war, the Battle of Cannae became Romans' point of reference for all later military catastrophes. Ever since, military commanders confronting a superior force have attempted, and usually failed, to reproduce Hannibal's tactics and their overwhelming success. In Cannae, the celebrated historian Adrian Goldsworthy offers a concise and enthralling history of one of the most famous battles ever waged, setting Cannae within the larger contexts of the Second Punic War and the nature of warfare in the third century BC.

Hannibal appeals to many as the ultimate underdog--a Carthaginian David against the Goliath of Rome--but it wasn't just his genius on the battlefield that set him apart. As a boy and then a man, his self-discipline and determination were legendary. Can we search beneath the accounts of Roman writers who were eager to portray Hannibal as a monster and find a more human figure? Can we use the life of Hannibal to look at the Romans themselves in an unfamiliar way-- not as the noble and benign defenders of civilization but as ruthless conquerors motivated by greed and conquest?

Author: Philip Freeman
Publisher: Pegasus Books
Published: 01/10/2023
Pages: 240
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.48lbs
Size: 8.19h x 5.43w x 0.79d
ISBN: 9781639363650

About the Author
Philip Freeman earned his Ph.D. at Harvard University and has taught at Boston University, Washington University, and Luther College. By tracing how French generals, officers, and civil officials sought to counter Algerian independence with their own project of radical social transformation, Terrence G. Peterson reveals that the conflict also helped to transform the nature of modern warfare.

The French war effort was never defined solely by repression. As Peterson details, it also sought to fashion new forms of surveillance and social control that could capture the loyalty of Algerians and transform Algerian society. Hygiene and medical aid efforts, youth sports and education programs, and psychological warfare campaigns all attempted to remake Algerian social structures and bind them more closely to the French state. In tracing the emergence of such programs, Peterson reframes the French war effort as a project of armed social reform that sought not to preserve colonial rule unchanged, but to revolutionize it in order to preserve it against the global challenges of decolonization.

Revolutionary Warfare demonstrates how French officers' efforts to transform warfare into an exercise in social engineering not only shaped how the Algerian War unfolded from its earliest months, but also helped to forge a paradigm of warfare that dominated strategic thinking during the Cold War and after: counterinsurgency.

Author: Terrence G. Founded in the ninth century BCE as a small colonial outpost, by the third, it had grown into the area's largest, richest empire. When, inevitably, it clashed with Rome for supremacy over the region, the conflict spanned over one century, three wars, and forty-three years of active fighting. After Carthage fell at last, the city was razed, and the tale of its defeat became a mere foundation stone in Rome's legend. But in this landmark new history--the first in over a decade--rising-star ancient historian Eve MacDonald restores the story of Carthage and its people to its rightful place in the history of the ancient world, reclaiming a lost culture long overshadowed by Roman mythmaking.

Drawing on brand-new archaeological analysis to uncover the history behind the legend, MacDonald takes readers on a journey from the Phoenician Levant of the early Iron Age to the Atlantic and all along the shores of Africa. She reveals ancient Carthage as a cosmopolitan city not only of extraordinary wealth and brave warriors, but also of staggering beauty and technological sophistication. Home to Hannibal and Dido, to war elephants and vast fleets, at its height Carthage commanded one of the ancient world's greatest navies and controlled territory spanning the coast of northwestern Africa to modern-day Spain, Sardinia, Sicily, and beyond. In gripping narrative, MacDonald shows how and why the Romans came to so fear Carthage, as one of the few rivals ever to inflict multiple defeats upon them--and what the world lost when it was finally gone.

Reclaimed from the Romans, Carthage is a dramatic tale from the other side of history--revealing that, without Carthage, there would be no Rome, and no modern world as we know it.

Author: Eve MacDonald
Publisher: W. He explains how the conflict in Darfur began as a civil war between nomadic and peasant tribes over fertile land in the south, triggered by a severe drought that had expanded the Sahara Desert by more than sixty miles in forty years; how British colonial officials had artificially tribalized Darfur, dividing its population; and how the war intensified in the 1990s when the Sudanese government tried unsuccessfully to address the problem by creating homelands for tribes without any. The involvement of opposition parties gave rise in 2003 to two rebel movements, leading to a brutal insurgency and a horrific counterinsurgency--but not to genocide, as the West declared.

Mamdani also shows how the Cold War exacerbated the twenty-year civil war in neighboring Chad, creating a confrontation between Libya's Muammar al-Qaddafi and the Reagan administration that spilled over into Darfur and militarized the fighting. By 2003, the war involved national, regional, and global forces, including the powerful Western lobby, who now saw it as part of the War on Terror.

Incisive and authoritative, Saviors and Survivors will radically alter our understanding of the crisis in Darfur.

Author: Mahmood Mamdani
Publisher: Crown Publishing Group (NY)
Published: 05/25/2010
Pages: 416
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 1.00lbs
Size: 8.00h x 5.20w x 0.90d
ISBN: 9780385525961

Review Citation(s):
New York Times Book Review 07/18/2010 pg. 24
Reference and Research Bk News 08/01/2010 pg. 58

About the Author
Mahmood Mamdani is Herbert Lehman Professor of Government and a member of the departments of anthropology, political science, and Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures (MEALAC) at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. But his adolescence is anything but typical. Born to a Syrian father and a French mother, Riad spent much of his early childhood in Libya, rural Syria, and France--moving through contrasting worlds, political ideologies, and daily absurdities. Years earlier, his father--charismatic, authoritarian, and obsessed with dictators and with building a utopian Arab society--abducted Riad's second younger brother, Fadi, and returned to Syria, leaving behind a fractured family.
At 14, Riad navigates puberty, isolation, and the pressures of French society, while haunted by the absence of his father and brother, and the sadness of his mother.
