Leisure and opportunity have now offered themselves, and I
avail myself of them in the hope that the publication will be found useful
to more than one class of readers. The many who take an interest in the
life of barbarous peoples may not be displeased to hear more about the
Fn; and the few who would try a fall with Mister Gorilla can learn from
me how to equip themselves, whence to set out and whither to go for the
best chance. Travelling with M. Paul B. du Chaillu's "First Expedition" in
my hand, I jealously looked into every statement, and his numerous friends
will be pleased to see how many of his assertions are confirmed by my
      experience.

The second part is devoted to the Nzadi or lower Congo River, from the
mouth to the Yellala or main rapids, the gate by which the mighty stream,
emerging from the plateau of Inner Africa, goes to its long home, the
Atlantic. Some time must elapse before the second expedition, which left
Ambriz early in 1873, under Lieutenant Grandy, R. N., can submit its
labours to the public: meanwhile these pages will, I trust, form a
suitable introduction to the gallant explorer's travel in the interior. It
would be preposterous to publish descriptions of any European country from
information gathered ten years ago. But Africa moves slowly, and thus we
see that the results of an Abyssinian journey (M. Antoine d'Abbadie's
"Godsic d'Ethiopie," which took place about 1845, are not considered
      obsolete in 1873.

After a languid conviction during the last half century of owning some
ground upon the West Coast of Africa, England has been rudely aroused by a
little war which will have large consequences. The causes that led to the
"Ashantee Campaign," a negro copy of the negroid Abyssinian, may be
broadly laid down as general incuriousness, local mismanagement, and the
      operation of unprincipled journalism.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 5760
Author: Burton, Richard Francis
Release Date: May 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/5760_3bc5e134-34af-4cb7-8e09-9510e43c4933.jpg?v=1671281332
two-trips-to-gorilla-land-and-the-cataracts-of-the-congo-volume-2-gb-5761
Two Trips to Gorilla Land and the Cataracts of the Congo, Volume 2

Two Trips to Gorilla Land and the Cataracts of the Congo, Volume 2

During the hot season of 1863, "Nanny Po," as the civilized African calls
this "lofty and beautiful island," had become a charnel-house, a "dark and
dismal tomb of Europeans." The yellow fever of the last year, which wiped
out in two months one-third of the white colonymore exactly, 78 out
of 250had not reappeared, but the conditions for its re-appearance
      were highly favourable. Go
and learn your tropics, said Science. Where on earth am
I to go? I wondered, for tropics are tropics wherever found, so I got
down an atlas and saw that either South America or West Africa must
be my destination, for the Malayan region was too far off and too expensive.
Then I got Wallaces Geographical Distribution and after
reading that masters article on the Ethiopian region I hardened
my heart and closed with West Africa. I did this the more readily
because while I knew nothing of the practical condition of it, I knew
a good deal both by tradition and report of South East America, and
remembered that Yellow Jack was endemic, and that a certain naturalist,
my superior physically and mentally, had come very near getting starved
to death in the depressing society of an expedition slowly perishing
of want and miscellaneous fevers up the Parana.
My ignorance regarding West Africa was soon removed. And although
the vast cavity in my mind that it occupied is not even yet half filled
up, there is a great deal of very curious information in its place.
I use the word curious advisedly, for I think many seemed to translate
my request for practical hints and advice into an advertisement that
Rubbish may be shot here. He now offers them to the
public, after some labor bestowed in correction and amendment, but
retaining their original form, that of a daily Journal, which better
suited his lack of literary practice and constructive skill, and was in
fitter keeping with the humble pretensions of the work, than a
re-arrangement on artistic principles. At various points of the narrative,
however, he has introduced observations or disquisitions from two or three
common-place books, which he kept simultaneously with the Journal; and
thus, in a few instances, remarks are inserted as having been made early
in the cruise, while, in reality, they were perhaps the ultimate result of
his reflection and judgment upon the topics discussed.

If, in any portion of the book, the author may hope to engage the
attention of the public, it will probably be in those pages which treat of
Liberia. The value of his evidence, as to the condition and prospects of
that colony, must depend, not upon any singular acuteness of observation
or depth of reflection, but upon his freedom from partizan bias, and his
consequent ability to perceive a certain degree of truth, and inclination
to express it frankly. A northern man, but not unacquainted with the slave
institutions of our own and other countriesneither an Abolitionist
nor a Colonizationistwithout prejudice, as without prepossessionhe
felt himself thus far qualified to examine the great enterprise which he
beheld in progress. He enjoyed, moreover, the advantage of comparing
Liberia, as he now saw it, with a personal observation of its condition
three years before, and could therefore mark its onward or retreating
footsteps, and the better judge what was permanent, and what merely
temporary or accidental. With these qualifications, he may at least hope
to have spoken so much of truth as entirely to gratify neither the friends
nor enemies of this interesting colony.

The West Coast of Africa is a fresher field for the scribbling tourist,
than most other parts of the world. Few visit it, unless driven by stern
necessity; and still fewer are disposed to struggle against the enervating
influence of the climate, and keep up even so much of intellectual
activity as may suffice to fill a diurnal page of Journal or Commonplace
Book. In his descriptions of the settlements of the various nations of
Europe, along that coast, and of the native tribes, and their trade and
intercourse with the whites, the writer indulges the idea that he may add
a trifle to the general information of the public. He puts forth his work,
however, with no higher claims than as a collection of desultory sketches,
in which he felt himself nowise bound to tell all that it might be
desirable to know, but only to be accurate in what he does tell. On such
terms, there is perhaps no very reprehensible audacity in undertaking the
history of a voyage; and he smiles to find himself, so simply and with so
little labor, acquiring a title to be enrolled among the authors of books!

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 7937
Author: Bridge, Horatio
Release Date: Apr 1, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Hawthorne, Nathaniel, 1804-1864

Observations Upon the Windward Coast of Africa\r - The religion, character, customs, &c. of the natives; with a system upon which they may be civilized, and a knowledge attained of the interior of this extraordinary quarter of the globe; and upon the natural and commercial resources of the country; made in the years 1805 and 1806; with an appendix, containing a letter to Lord Howick, on the most simple and effectual means of abolishing the slave trade

With becoming deference, I shall endeavour to illustrate in the
following pages, the observations I have personally made upon the Coast of
Africa, and to give the information I have obtained from an extended circle
of Chiefs, and native Tribes, relative to its Inhabitants, their Religion,
Habits and Customs, the natural productions and commercial resources, &c.
and attempt to delineate the most eligible grounds upon which the condition
of the African may be effectually improved, and our commercial relations be
preserved with that important quarter of the globe.
Though deeply impressed with the importance of the subject, and my own
incompetency, I obtrude myself upon Public notice, governed by this
reflection, that I am stimulated by an ardent zeal for the prosperity of my
Country, and am animated by a philanthropic solicitude for the effectual
manumission of the African, from his enslaved customs, his superstitious
idolatry, and for the enlargement of his intellectual powers.
I shall guard against the sacrifice of truth to abstracted principles;
and if in the most remote degree, I excite the interference of my
countrymen in behalf of the African, extend our commerce, and enlarge the
circle of civilized and Christian Society, I shall think that I have
neither travelled, nor written in vain.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 12539
Author: Corry, Joseph
Release Date: Jun 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

travels-of-richard-and-john-lander-into-the-interior-of-africa-for-the-discovery-of-the-course-and-termination-of-the-niger-gb-12667
Travels of Richard and John Lander into the interior of Africa, for the discovery of the course and termination of the Niger

Travels of Richard and John Lander into the interior of Africa, for the discovery of the course and termination of the Niger\r - From unpublished documents in the possession of the late Capt. M. le Comte
de Cardi possesses an unrivalled knowledge of the natives of the Niger
Delta, gained, as all West Coasters know, by personal experience, and
gained in a way whereby he had to test the truth of his ideas about
these natives, not against things said concerning them in books, but
against the facts themselves, for years; and depending on the accuracy
of his knowledge was not a theory, but his own life and property. I have
always wished that men having this kind of first-hand, well-tested
knowledge regarding West Africa could be induced to publish it for the
benefit of students, and for the foundation of a true knowledge
concerning the natives of West Africa in the minds of the general
public, feeling assured that if we had this class of knowledge
available, the student of ethnology would be saved from many fantastic
theories, and the general public enabled to[Pg viii] bring its influence to bear
in the cause of justice, instead of in the cause of fads. I need say
nothing more regarding Appendix I.; it is a mine of knowledge concerning
a highly developed set of natives of the true Negro stem, particularly
valuable because, during recent years, we have been singularly badly off
for information on the true Negro. It would not be too much to say that,
with the exception of the important series of works by the late Sir A.
B. Ellis, and a few others, so few that you can count them on the
fingers of one hand, and Dr. Freemans Ashanti and Jaman, published
this year, we have practically had no reliable information on these, the
most important of the races of Africa, since the eighteenth century. The
general public have been dependent on the work of great East and Central
African geographical explorers, like Dr. Livingstone, Mr. H. M. Stanley,
Dr. Gregory, Mr. Scott Elliott, and Sir H. H. Johnston, men whose work
we cannot value too highly, and whom we cannot sufficiently admire; but
who, nevertheless, were not when describing Africans describing Negroes,
but that great mixture of races existing in Central and East Africa
whose main ingredient is Bantu. To argue from what you know about Bantus
when you are dealing with Negroes is about as safe and sound as to argue
from what you may know about Eastern Europeans when you are dealing with
Western Europeans. Nevertheless, this fallacious method has been
followed in the domain of ethnology and politics with, as might be
expected, bad results. I am, therefore, very proud at being permitted by
M. le Comte de Cardi to publish his statements on true Negroes; and I
need not say I have in no way altered them, and that he is in no way
responsible for any errors that there may be in the portions of this
book written by me.
[Pg ix]
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 38870
Author: Kingsley, Mary Henrietta
Release Date: Feb 13, 2012
Format: eBook
Language: English

Langs de kust van Afrika\r - De Aarde en haar Volken, 1875

Ik houd u omvat Afrika! After two days steaming from the latter place we passed Cape
Bald, with the two queer little Bijjals Islands in front of it, and
sighted Cape St. Mary at the entrance of the river. On the high ground,
at the point, could be seen the long low white building of the deserted
barracks, and the tops of mangrove trees could be faintly distinguished
above the level of the sea in the distance to the right and left as we
entered the estuary; while, making a long sweep of two or three miles,
we reached the Fairway buoy, picked up a pilot, and steamed up the
river.
Bathurst, St. Marys Island, does not appear to advantage from the
anchorage. The prospect was not inviting, but, hoping that it
might prove better than it looked, I hailed a boat, and was pulled
to the shore. On the way several curious Shiriree canoes, fashioned
like crocodiles, and full of men, passed down the river. I had, at a very early
period, a strong predilection for a military life, being of robust
health and an athletic frame. In 1822 I therefore enlisted in the First
Regiment of Life Guards, the discipline and appearance of which are, I
may say, universally admired. During the hours not devoted[Pg iv] to military
duties, I applied myself to the cultivation of the art of drawing and
painting, in which I attained some proficiency, and acquired also
considerable knowledge of mechanics, all of which I found of great
service to me when I afterwards became a traveller.
After serving sixteen years in this distinguished regiment, I felt
anxious for a field of greater enterprise, and therefore obtained my
discharge, on the conditions of the late good conduct warrant, early in
1839. In consequence of meritorious service, I obtained the appointment
of master-at-arms in the late expedition to the Niger. In this
unfortunate enterprise, I narrowly escaped the melancholy fate of so
many of my brave and talented countrymen. Of upwards of three hundred,
not more than five escaped! When at Egga, on the Niger, I volunteered
to proceed up that river, with a few natives only; but, on account of
the increasing sickness of the Europeans, the project was abandoned.
Before the Albert, indeed, had descended the[Pg v] Niger nearly all
of them were either attacked by the fever or were dead! The season was
declared by the natives themselves to be particularly fatal, even to
them.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 68617
Author: Duncan, John
Release Date: Jul 28, 2022
Format: eBook
Language: English
Publisher: Richard Bentley
Publication Date: 1847
Publisher Country: United Kingdom

observations-on-the-slave-trade-and-a-description-of-some-part-of-the-coast-of-guinea-during-a-voyage-made-in-1787-and-1788-in-company-with-doctor-a-sparrman-and-captain-arrehenius-gb-69156
Observations on the slave trade and a description of some part of the coast of Guinea, during a voyage, made in 1787, and 1788, in company with Doctor A. These mountains form
the western extremity of a range, running as far to the eastward as
the eye can reach. The path led directly to these mountains, and the
surrounding country was of a beautiful champaign character, studded at
considerable intervals with trees of various descriptions.
About half a mile from Setta, and journeying N.E., we crossed a fine
brook with a waterfall. The bed of the brook was of granite or quartz,
in immense detached blocks, the brook running eastward. Close to this
ford is a small kroom, called Zoogah; and although we had come so
short a distance the old patriarch or caboceer had provided plenty of
provisions for myself and private servants, with water and peto. The
poor man also presented me with several fowls. He told me that the
people of his small town had made a subscription and purchased these
fowls to offer to me, but were ashamed to make so trifling a present,
although they were anxious to show their good feeling towards the
Kings white stranger. Nowhere is French's consummate style more vivid than in Nkrumah's early years in Depression-era America, especially in his mesmerizing portrait of a culturally effervescent Harlem that Nkrumah encountered in 1935 before heading to college. During his student years in Pennsylvania and later as an activist in London, Nkrumah became steeped in a renowned international Black intellectual milieu--including Du Bois, Garvey, Fanon, Padmore, and C.L.R. James, who called him "one of the greatest political leaders of our century"--and formed an ideology that readied him for an extraordinarily swift and peaceful rise to power upon his return to Ghana in 1947.

Four years later, in a political landslide he engineered while imprisoned, Nkrumah stunned Britain by winning the first general election under universal franchise in Africa, becoming Ghana's first independent prime minister in 1957. As leader of a sovereign nation, Nkrumah wielded his influence to promote the liberation of the entire continent, pushing unity as the only pathway to recover from the damages of enslavement and subjugation. By the time national military and police forces, aided by the CIA, overthrew him in 1966, Nkrumah's radical belief in pan-African liberation had both galvanized dozens of nascent African states and fired a global agenda of Black power.

In its dramatic recasting of the American civil rights story and in its tragic depiction of a continent that once exuded all the promise of a newly won freedom, The Second Emancipation becomes a generational work that positions Africa at the forefront of modern-day history.

Author: Howard W. We wish to be the heirs of all the revolutions of the world, of all the liberation struggles of the peoples of the Third World. We draw the lessons of the American revolution. The French revolution taught us the rights of man. The great October revolution brought victory to the proletariat and made possible the realization of the Paris Commune's dreams of justice. --Thomas Sankara, October 1984. Thomas Sankara led the revolution of 1983 to 1987 in Burkina Faso. In the five speeches contained in this pamphlet, he explains how the peasants and workers of this West African country established a popular revolutionary government and began to fight the hunger, illiteracy and economic backwardness imposed by imperialist domination, and the oppression of women inherited from millennia of class society. In so doing, they have provided an example not only to the workers and small farmers of Africa, but to those of the entire world.

Author: Thomas Sankara
Publisher: Pathfinder
Published: 01/01/2007
Pages: 111
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.39lbs
Size: 8.40h x 5.50w x 0.30d
ISBN: 9780873489898
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_23218748-2769-49a6-92e2-0afc3ace324a.jpg?v=1759943879
the-jew-who-would-be-king-a-true-story-of-shipwreck-survival-and-scandal-in-victorian-africa-9780520403000
The Jew Who Would Be King: A True Story of Shipwreck, Survival, and Scandal in Victorian Africa
"Brings the nineteenth century to life, with its attendant disease, violence, and colonial machinations."--Jewish Book Council
"In Rovner's deeply researched biography, the adventurer's swashbuckling memoirs are. . . . a crowbar of sorts, used to pry open a window onto an era of possibility, prejudice and burgeoning colonial avarice."--NPR

This vivid reconstruction of one man's life reveals the harsh realities and moral ambiguities of colonial power.

The Jew Who Would Be King tells the story of Nathaniel Isaacs--a nineteenth-century British Jew who helped establish the Zulu kingdom only to become a ruthless warlord and slaveholder. The ship was scuttled and burned on arrival to hide the wealthy perpetrators to escape prosecution. Despite numerous efforts to find the sunken wreck, Clotilda remained hidden for the next 160 years. But in 2019, journalist Ben Raines made international news when he successfully concluded his obsessive quest through the swamps of Alabama to uncover one of our nation's most important historical artifacts.

Traveling from Alabama to the ancient African kingdom of Dahomey in modern-day Benin, Raines recounts the ship's perilous journey, the story of its rediscovery, and its complex legacy. Against all odds, Africatown, the Alabama community founded by the captives of the Clotilda, prospered in the Jim Crow South. Zora Neale Hurston visited in 1927 to interview Cudjo Lewis, telling the story of his enslavement in the New York Times bestseller Barracoon. And yet the haunting memory of bondage has been passed on through generations. Clotilda is a ghost haunting three communities--the descendants of those transported into slavery, the descendants of their fellow Africans who sold them, and the descendants of their fellow American enslavers. This connection binds these groups together to this day. At the turn of the century, descendants of the captain who financed the Clotilda's journey lived nearby--where, as significant players in the local real estate market, they disenfranchised and impoverished residents of Africatown.

From these parallel stories emerges a profound depiction of America as it struggles to grapple with the traumatic past of slavery and the ways in which racial oppression continues to this day. And yet, at its heart, The Last Slave Ship remains optimistic--an epic tale of one community's triumphs over great adversity and a celebration of the power of human curiosity to uncover the truth about our past and heal its wounds.

Author: Ben Raines
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Published: 01/24/2023
Pages: 304
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.55lbs
Size: 8.30h x 5.30w x 0.80d
ISBN: 9781982136154

About the Author
Ben Raines is an award-winning environmental journalist, filmmaker, and charter captain. With a population of nearly 40 million spread across Western Africa - and diaspora communities in Europe, the Caribbean, Latin America, and North America - Yoruba are one of the most researched groups emanating from Africa. Yet, to date, very few have grappled fully with the historical foundations and development of this group which has contributed to shaping the way African communities are analyzed from prehistoric to modern times. A love for the Kebra Negast, holy book of Ethiopian Christians and Jamaican Rastafarians. Contemporary scholars date the Kebra Negast to the 14th century, but it retells the stories of much earlier Biblical times, one very important story in particular. According to the Kebra Negast, the Israelites' Ark of the Covenant was spirited away to the ancient kingdom of Ethiopia by wise King Solomon's own son, offspring of the union between Solomon and the exotic Queen Makeda of Ethiopia (a.k.a. the Queen of Sheba). Gerald Hausman, a consummate storyteller of native traditions, presents the core narrative of the Kebra Negast, from Adam to the rise of the Ethiopian Solomonid dynasty. On top of this, he injects his own encounters with Rastafarians during his travels in Jamaica--dreadlocked Rastas as modern-day Samsons, their unwavering faith in Jah, and a rare outsider's glimpse at the Nyabinghi ceremony. The Kebra Nagast, or the Book of the Glory of Kings, is an account written in Ge'ez of the origins of the Solomonic line of the Emperors of Ethiopia. The text, in its existing form, is at least seven hundred years old, and is considered by many Ethiopian Christians and Rastafarians to be an inspired and a reliable account. Not only does it contain an account of how the Queen of Sheba met Solomon, and about how the Ark of the Covenant came to Ethiopia with Menelik I, but contains an account of the conversion of the Ethiopians from the worship of the sun, moon, and stars to that of the "Lord God of Israel". As Edward Ullendorff explained in the 1967 Schweich Lectures, "The Kebra Nagast is not merely a literary work, but it is the repository of Ethiopian national and religious feelings." According to the colophon attached to most of the existing copies, the Kebra Nagast originally was written in Coptic, then translated into Arabic in the Year of Mercy 409 (dated to AD 1225) by a team of Ethiopian clerics during the office of Abuna Abba Giyorgis, and finally into Ge'ez at the command of the governor of Enderta province Ya'ibika Igzi'. Based on the testimony of this colophon, "Conti Rossini, Littmann, and Cerulli, inter alios, have marked off the period 1314 to 1321-1322 for the composition of the book.". Marcus, (1994), indicated that the religious epic story was conflated in the fourteenth century by six Tigrayan scribes. Other sources put it as a work of the fourteenth century Nebura'ed Yeshaq of Aksum. Careful study of the text has revealed traces of Arabic, possibly pointing to an Arabic vorlage, but no clear evidence of a previous Coptic version. Many scholars doubt that a Coptic version ever existed, and that the history of the text goes back no further than the Arabic vorlage. On the other hand, the numerous quotations in the text from the Bible were not translated from this hypothetical Arabic vorlage, but were copied from the Ethiopian translation of the Bible, either directly or from memory, and in their use and interpretation shows the influence of patristic sources such as Gregory of Nyssa. Hubbard details the many sources that the compiler of the Kebra Nagast drew on in creating this work. They include not only both Testaments of the Bible (although heavier use is made of the Old Testament than the New), but he detects evidence of Rabbinical sources, influence from apocryphal works (especially the Book of Enoch and Book of Jubilees, and such Syriac works as the Book of the Cave of Treasures, and its derivatives the Book of Adam and Eve and the Book of the Bee. Marcus thus describes it as "a pastiche of legends ... [that] blended local and regional oral traditions and style and substance derived from the Old and New Testaments, various apocryphal texts, Jewish and Islamic commentaries, and Patristic writings"

Author: E. a. In Writing Timbuktu, Shamil Jeppie offers a history of the book as a handwritten, handmade object in West Africa. Centering his account in the historic city of Timbuktu, Jeppie explores the culture of the "manuscript-book"--unbound pages, often held together by carefully crafted leather covers. He describes the most important and most prolific scholars and their works, the subjects they covered, and ways these books were circulated, collected, and preserved.

The authors of the manuscript-books wrote to demonstrate their knowledge to their peers, expound theological and legal opinions, and engage in scholarly disputation. After beginning his account in Timbuktu, Jeppie traces the literary connections among places as distant as Marrakesh in the north and Sokoto in the south, and smaller settlements in between. He chronicles the work of Ahmad Baba in late sixteenth-century Timbuktu and his students in early seventeenth-century Marrakesh; the emergence of writers in the eighteenth century in what today is Mauritania; the writings of the scholar-rulers of Sokoto, northern Nigeria, in the nineteenth century; and the eventual discovery of the manuscript-book world of West Africa by European travelers and French colonial officials. Finally, Jeppie finds that the handwritten text persisted even after the advent of the printed book, and even among writers whose books were in print, including the famous Malian novelist Amadou Hampâté Bâ.

Author: Shamil Jeppie
Publisher: Princeton University Press
Published: 01/20/2026
Pages: 240
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.10lbs
Size: 9.21h x 6.22w x 1.18d
ISBN: 9780691273853

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 10/01/2025

About the Author
Shamil Jeppie is associate professor of history at the University of Cape Town, where he founded the Tombouctou Manuscripts Project.
