A broad blossom
terminates it at its upper end; a button of a bud projects from the
stalk a little below the blossom, on the left-hand side. The broad
blossom is the Delta, extending from Aboosir to Tineh, a direct distance
of a hundred and eighty miles, which the projection of the coastthe
graceful swell of the petalsenlarges to two hundred and thirty. The
bud is the Fayoum, a natural depression in the hills that shut in the
Nile valley on the west, which has been rendered cultivable for many
thousands of years by the introduction into it of the Nile water,
through a canal known as the "Bahr Yousouf." The long stalk of the lily
is the Nile valley itself, which is a ravine scooped in the rocky soil
for seven hundred miles from the First Cataract to the apex of the
Delta, sometimes not more than a mile broad, never more than eight or
ten miles. It is in no sense a connected and continuous
history of these countries, for that has already been written by Prof.
Maspero, but is rather intended as an appendix or addendum to his work,
briefly recapitulating and describing the discoveries made since its
appearance. On this account we have followed a geographical rather than a
chronological system of arrangement, but at the same time the attempt has
been made to suggest to the mind of the reader the historical sequence of
      events.

At no period have excavations been pursued with more energy and activity,
both in Egypt and Western Asia, than at the present time, and every
seasons work obliges us to modify former theories, and extends our
knowledge of periods of history which even ten years ago were unknown to
the historian. For instance, a whole chapter has been added to Egyptian
history by the discovery of the Neolithic culture of the primitive
Egyptians, while the recent excavations at Susa are revealing a hitherto
totally unsuspected epoch of proto-Elamite civilization. Further than
this, we have discovered the relics of the oldest historical kings of
Egypt, and we are now enabled to reconstitute from material as yet
unpublished the inter-relations of the early dynasties of Babylon.
Important discoveries have also been made with regard to isolated points
in the later historical periods. We have therefore attempted to include
the most important of these in our survey of recent excavations and their
results. We would again remind the reader that Prof. Masperos great work
must be consulted for the complete history of the period, the present
volume being, not a connected history of Egypt and Western Asia, but a
description and discussion of the manner in which recent discovery and
research have added to and modified our conceptions of ancient Egyptian
      and Mesopotamian civilization.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 17321
Author: Hall, H. In the time
when the gods were not created, not one as yet, when they had neither been
called by their names, nor had their destinies been assigned to them by
fate, gods manifested themselves. Lakhmu and Lakhamu were the first to
appear, and waxed great for ages; then Anshar and Kishar were produced
after them. Days were added to days, and years were heaped upon years:
Anu, Inlil, and Ea were born in their turn, for Anshar and Kishar had
given them birth. As the generations emanated one from the other, their
vitality increased, and the personality of each became more clearly
defined; the last generation included none but beings of an original
character and clearly marked individuality. Anu, the sunlit sky by day,
the starlit firmament by night; Inlil-Bel, the king of the earth; Ea, the
sovereign of the waters and the personification of wisdom.*** Each of them
duplicated himself, Anu into Anat, Bel into Belit, Ea into Damkina, and
united himself to the spouse whom he had deduced from himself. Other
divinities sprang from these fruitful pairs, and the impulse once given,
the world was rapidly peopled by their descendants. Sin, Shamash, and
Kamman, who presided respectively over the moon, the sun, and the air,
were all three of equal rank; next came the lords of the planets, Ninib,
Merodach, Nergal, the warrior-goddess Ishtar, and Nebo; then a whole army
of lesser deities, who ranged themselves around Anu as round a supreme
master. Timat, finding her domain becoming more and more restricted owing
to the activity of the others, desired to raise battalion against
battalion, and set herself to create unceasingly; but her offspring, made
in her own image, appeared like those incongruous phantoms which men see
in dreams, and which are made up of members borrowed from a score of
different animals. They appeared in the form of bulls with human heads, of
horses with the snouts of dogs, of dogs with quadruple bodies springing
from a single fish-like tail. Some of them had the beak of an eagle or a
hawk; others, four wings and two faces; others, the legs and horns of a
goat; others, again, the hind quarters of a horse and the whole body of a
man. Timat furnished them with terrible weapons, placed them under the
command of her husband Kingu, and set out to war against the gods.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 17323
Author: Maspero, G. But after Palestine, I think that
Egypt would come next. For one thing, it is linked very closely to
Palestine by all those beautiful stories of the Old Testament, which
tell us of Joseph, the slave-boy who became Viceroy of Egypt; of Moses,
the Hebrew child who became a Prince of Pharaoh's household; and of the
wonderful exodus of the Children of Israel.
But besides that, it is a land which has a most strange and wonderful
story of its own. No other country has so long a history of great Kings,
and wise men, and brave soldiers; and in no other country can you see
anything to compare with the great buildings, some of them most
beautiful, all of them most wonderful, of which Egypt has so many. We
have some old and interesting buildings in this country, and people go
far to see cathedrals and castles that are perhaps five or[Pg 2] six hundred
years old, or even more; but in Egypt, buildings of that age are looked
upon as almost new, and nobody pays very much attention to them. The German
originals have been appearing during the last eighteen
months. The English translations made by Miss Jane
Hutchison have been submitted in each case to the Authors,
and embody their latest views. Short, helpful bibliographies
are added. Each study consists of some 64 to 80 pages,
crown 8vo, and costs 1s. sewed, or 1s. 6d.
cloth.

As early as 1820 it was known in Europe that in
Middle Egypt, on the east bank of the Nile, in
the district between Minieh and Siut, there lay the
remains of a great city of Ancient Egypt. The
Prussian exploration expedition of 1842-45 gave
special attention to this site, where indeed were
found, about sixty miles south of Minieh, extensive
ruins, beginning at the village of Haggi
Kandil and covering the floor of a rock-bound
valley named after the fellahin village, El Amarna.
At that time the ground-plan of the city was still
easy to distinguish; the regular lines of the streets
could be traced, and enough could be seen of the
great design of the principal temple to excite the
admiration of the discoverers. This example of the
laying out of an ancient Egyptian town still remains
almost unique, for of old, as now, private buildings
were constructed of flimsy material. It is intended to supplement the books already in the hands
of tourists and students, and to put before them just that
information which either is not readily accessible or else forms part
of larger and cumbrous works. The travels of Herodotos in Egypt are
followed for the first time in the light of recent discoveries, and
the history of the intercourse between the Egyptians and the Jews is
brought down to the age of the Roman Empire. As the ordinary
histories of Egypt used by travellers end with the extinction of the
native Pharaohs, I have further given a sketch of the Ptolemaic
period. I have moreover specially noted the results of the recent
excavations and discoveries made by the Egypt [pg viii] Exploration Fund and by
Professor Flinders Petrie, at all events where they bear upon the
subject-matter of the book. Those who have not the publications of
the Fund or of Professor Petrie, or who do not care to carry them
into Egypt, will, I believe, be glad to have the essence of them thus
extracted in a convenient shape. Lastly, in the Appendices I have put
together information which the visitor to the Nile often wishes to
obtain, but which he can find in none of his guide-books. The
Appendix on the nomes embodies the results of the latest researches,
and the list will therefore be found to differ here and there from
the lists which have been published elsewhere. Those who desire the
assistance of maps should procure the very handy and complete
        Atlas of
Ancient Egypt, published by the Egypt Exploration Fund
(price 3s. 6d.). It makes the addition of maps to this or any future
        work on Ancient Egypt superfluous.
Discoveries follow
so thickly one upon the other in these days of active exploration
that [pg ix] it is impossible for an
author to keep pace with them. Since my manuscript was ready for the
press Dr. Naville, on behalf of the Egypt Exploration Fund, has
practically cleared the magnificent temple of Queen Hatshepsu at Dr
el-Bhari, and has discovered beneath it the unfinished sepulchre in
which the queen fondly hoped that her body would be laid; Professor
Petrie has excavated in the desert behind Zawdeh and opposite Qoft
the tombs of barbarous tribes, probably of Libyan origin, who settled
in the valley of the Nile between the fall of the sixth and the rise
of the eleventh dynasty; Mr. de Morgan has disinterred more jewellery
of exquisite workmanship from the tombs of the princesses of the
twelfth dynasty at Dahshr; and Dr. Botti has discovered the site of
the Serapeum at Alexandria, thus obtaining for the first time a point
of importance for determining the topography of the ancient city.
The people whose
remains have been found by Professor Petrie buried their dead in open
[pg x] situated in the central court. But
his most interesting discovery is that of long subterranean passages,
once faced with masonry, and furnished with niches for lamps, where
the mysteries of Serapis were celebrated. At the entrance of one of
them pious visitors to the shrine have scratched their vows on the
wall of rock. Those who are interested in the discovery should
consult Dr. Botti's memoir on L'Acropole d'Alexandrie et le
Srapeum, presented to the Archological Society of
        Alexandria, 17th August 1895.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 38843
Author: Sayce, A. They carve primitive spears and go hunting, then knap their own obsidian blades to skin the game. Now, in Egyptian Mythology, Geraldine Pinch offers a comprehensive introduction that untangles the mystery of Egyptian Myth.

Spanning Ancient Egyptian culture--from 3200 BC to AD 400--Pinch opens a door to this hidden world and casts light on its often misunderstood belief system. She discusses the nature of myths and the history of Egypt, from the predynastic to the postpharaonic period. She explains how Egyptian culture developed around the flooding of the Nile, or the "inundation," a phenomenon on which the whole welfare of the country depended, and how aspects of the inundation were personified as deities. She explains that the usually cloudless skies made for a preoccupation with the stars and planets. Indeed, much early Egyptian mythology may have developed to explain the movement of these celestial bodies. She provides a timeline covering the seven stages in the mythical history of Egypt and outlining the major events of each stage, such as the reign of the sun God. A substantial A to Z section covers the principal themes and concepts of Egyptian mythology as well as the most important deities, demons, and other characters. Wilkinson describes the extraordinary cultural reach displayed at the height of their power: how they founded new cities, including Alexandria, their great seaside residence and commercial capital; mined gold in the furthest reaches of Nubia; built spectacular new temples that are among the foremost architectural wonders of the Nile Valley; and created a dazzling civilization that produced astonishing works of sculpture, architecture, and literature. Stunningly, he also shows how such expansionist ambitions led to the era's downfall. This was a special teaching describing the secret wisdom about the nature of the universe and of the soul as well as a path to make the journey, through varied phases of spiritual evolution, from mortal to immortal and from earth to heaven and beyond. The goal is to regain ones divine stature and transcendental place. In its earliest form, originated in Ancient Egypt, it was related to theurgical religious system developed in the priests and priestesses of the Ancient Egyptian city of Anu and the Tree was seen as the source of life. This book explains that teaching, which has been available to all, but missed by those who did not possess the keys to unlock its mystic formula. In this volume the Creation teaching of Anu, the TREE OF LIFE metaphysical teachings, disciplines and techniques, from the hieroglyphic texts, are given. This new expanded edition contains original translations of the texts whereby the teachings, that are discussed, originate from. Thus, the avid student of the Ancient Egyptian Mysteries may see the source of the mystic wisdom for themselves directly.

The manuscript "The Kemetic Tree of Life" by Dr. Muata Ashby is a profound exploration of ancient Egyptian spirituality and philosophy. Drawing upon forty years of archaeological research, award-winning scholar Toby Wilkinson takes us inside a tribal society with a pre-monetary economy and decadent, divine kings who ruled with all-too-recognizable human emotions. Here are the legendary leaders: Akhenaten, the "heretic king," who with his wife Nefertiti brought about a revolution with a bold new religion; Tutankhamun, whose dazzling tomb would remain hidden for three millennia; and eleven pharaohs called Ramesses, the last of whom presided over the militarism, lawlessness, and corruption that caused a political and societal decline. Middle Egyptian is especially important because it is the language in which many important literary works were written. Moreover, when it was no longer spoken, Middle Egyptian continued to be taught in temples and schools as a vehicle of literary and liturgical expression.
This compact handbook, by a noted German Egyptologist, was specially designed for beginning students who wish to acquire enough basic knowledge to enable them to read the easier hieroglyphic texts. Toward that end, the author begins with a general discussion of Middle Egyptian and its script, followed by concise, accessible lessons in phonology, formation and usage of nouns and other parts of speech, and syntax. With careful study, the student should be able, even after the first lesson, to translate simple sentences independently. Above all else, Cleopatra was a shrewd strategist and an ingenious negotiator.

Though her life spanned fewer than forty years, it reshaped the contours of the ancient world. She was married twice, each time to a brother. She waged a brutal civil war against the first when both were teenagers. She poisoned the second. Ultimately she dispensed with an ambitious sister as well; incest and assassination were family specialties. Cleopatra appears to have had sex with only two men. They happen, however, to have been Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, among the most prominent Romans of the day. Both were married to other women. Cleopatra had a child with Caesar and -- after his murder -- three more with his protégé. Already she was the wealthiest ruler in the Mediterranean; the relationship with Antony confirmed her status as the most influential woman of the age. The two would together attempt to forge a new empire, in an alliance that spelled their ends. Cleopatra has lodged herself in our imaginations ever since.

Famous long before she was notorious, Cleopatra has gone down in history for all the wrong reasons. Shakespeare and Shaw put words in her mouth. Michelangelo, Tiepolo, and Elizabeth Taylor put a face to her name. Along the way, Cleopatra's supple personality and the drama of her circumstances have been lost. Hermes Trismegistus may be associated with the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth. Greeks in the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt recognized the equivalence of Hermes and Thoth through the interpretatio graeca. Consequently, the two gods were worshiped as one, in what had been the Temple of Thoth in Khemenu, which was known in the Hellenistic period as Hermopolis. Hermes, the Greek god of interpretive communication, was combined with Thoth, the Egyptian god of wisdom. The Egyptian priest and polymath Imhotep had been deified long after his death and therefore assimilated to Thoth in the classical and Hellenistic periods. The renowned scribe Amenhotep and a wise man named Teôs were coequal deities of wisdom, science, and medicine; and, thus, they were placed alongside Imhotep in shrines dedicated to Thoth-Hermes during the Ptolemaic Kingdom. Some authorities regard Hermes Trismegistus as a contemporary of Abraham, and claim that Abraham acquired a portion of his mystical knowledge from Hermes himself. Christian writers considered Hermes to be a wise pagan prophet who foresaw the coming of Christianity. They believed in the existence of a single theology that threads through all religions. It was given by God to man in antiquity and passed through a series of prophets, which included Zoroaster and Plato. In order to demonstrate the verity of this thesis, Christians appropriated the Hermetic teachings for their own purposes. By this account, Hermes Trismegistus was either a contemporary of Moses, or the third in a line of men named Hermes.

This title is not returnable
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_788bee36-8cc6-483b-97e4-3f4e25f44ae1.jpg?v=1759977025
where-are-the-great-pyramids-9780448484099
Where Are the Great Pyramids?
The Great Pyramids of Egypt--all kids over the age of five recognize them instantly. Regularly, repeatedly, and with impunity, queens like Hatshepsut, Nefertiti, and Cleopatra controlled the totalitarian state as power-brokers and rulers. But that is only half of the story. During the so-called Golden Age of Exploration, there were women working and exploring before Howard Carter discovered the tomb of King Tut. Before men even conceived of claiming the story for themselves, women were working in Egypt to lay the groundwork for all future exploration.

In Women in the Valley of the Kings: The Untold Story of Women Egyptologists in the Gilded Age, Kathleen Sheppard brings the untold stories of these women back into this narrative. Sheppard begins with some of the earliest European women who ventured to Egypt as travelers: Amelia Edwards, Jenny Lane, and Marianne Brocklehurst. Their travelogues, diaries and maps chronicled a new world for the curious. In the vast desert, Maggie Benson, the first woman granted permission to excavate in Egypt, met Nettie Gourlay, the woman who became her lifelong companion. They battled issues of oppression and exclusion and, ultimately, are credited with excavating the Temple of Mut.

As each woman scored a success in the desert, she set up the women who came later for their own struggles and successes. Emma Andrews' success as a patron and archaeologist helped to pave the way for Margaret Murray to teach. Margaret's work in the university led to the artists Amice Calverley's and Myrtle Broome's ability to work on site at Abydos, creating brilliant reproductions of tomb art, and to Kate Bradbury's and Caroline Ransom's leadership in critical Egyptological institutions. Women in the Valley of the Kings upends the grand male narrative of Egyptian exploration and shows how a group of courageous women charted unknown territory and changed the field of Egyptology forever.

Author: Kathleen Sheppard
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Published: 07/16/2024
Pages: 320
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.10lbs
Size: 9.29h x 6.38w x 1.10d
ISBN: 9781250284358

Review Citation(s):
Library Journal Prepub Alert 02/01/2024 pg. 11
Booklist 06/01/2024 pg. 25
Shelf Awareness 08/01/2024

About the Author
Kathleen Sheppard was born and raised in the Midwestern United States, where she has now settled after years away. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Massey was one of the first Egyptologists in modern times to suggest that with the final eclipse of the old Land of Kam [a.k.a. ancient Egypt], a brilliant light had been extinguished in world civilization. There was a small compensation in the often meteoric rise of other cultures subsequently, but the luminance of these later cultures was, Massey suggests, a paler reflection of the Nile Valley sun that had set. In this, the most philosophical of his works on ancient Egypt, Massey leads a tour through thousands of years of sociological, cultural, and spiritual development, all the while pointing, with dazzling reason and persuasive prose, to a distant, common, Egyptian origin. In the first volume Massey was primarily interested in elaborating how the first humans emerging in Africa created thought. What had been evident to him from the outset was that the myths, rituals and religion of ancient Egypt--or Old Kam--had preserved virtually intact a record of the psycho-mythic evolution of humanity. In the second volume Massey examines the celestial phenomenon known as the Precession of the Equinoxes. He believed that only by understanding this phenomenon was it possible to fathom Nile Valley history. The last half of the second volume is devoted to the Kamite sources of Christianity. Massey sought to demonstrate the manner in which New Testament Christianity evolved directly out of Osirian mysteries. One of the more important aspects of Massey's writings were his assertions that there were parallels between Jesus and the Egyptian god Horus. Massey, for example, argued that: both Horus and Jesus were born of virgins on 25 December, raised men from the dead (Massey speculates that the biblical Lazarus, raised from the dead by Jesus, has a parallel in El-Asar-Us, a title of Osiris), died by crucifixion and were resurrected three days later. These assertions have influenced various later writers such as Alvin Boyd Kuhn, Tom Harpur, Yosef Ben-Jochannan, and D.M. Is the Giza Pyramid a remnant of their technology? Then, what was the power source that fueled such a civilization? The technology of harmonic resonance, claims renowned master craftsman and engineer Christopher Dunn. In a brilliant piece of reverse engineering based on twenty years of research, Dunn reveals that the Great Pyramid of Giza was actually a large acoustical device! By its size and dimensions, this crystal edifice created a harmonic resonance with the Earth and converted Earth's vibrational energies to microwave radiation. The author shows how the pyramid's numerous chambers and passageways were positioned with the deliberate precision to maximize its acoustical qualities. Following the story from the Egyptians' prehistoric origins to their conquest by the Persians, Greeks, and Romans, this book resurrects a fascinating society replete with remarkable historical information. It investigates such subjects as the changing nature of life and death in the Nile valley to some of the earliest masterpieces of art, architecture, and literature in the ancient world. The authors--an international team of experts working at the cutting edge of their particular fields--outline the principal sequence of political events, including detailed examinations of the three so-called 'intermediate periods' which were previously regarded as 'dark ages' and are only now beginning to be better understood. They also examine cultural and social patterns, including stylistic developments in art and literature.
