In the meantime those of the Persians who had been left behind in
Europe by Dareios, of whom Megabazos was the commander, had subdued the
people of Perinthos first of the Hellespontians, since they refused to be
subject to Dareios. These had in former times also been hardly dealt with
by the Paionians: for the Paionians from the Strymon had been commanded by
an oracle of their god to march against the Perinthians; and if the
Perinthians, when encamped opposite to them, should shout aloud and call
to them by their name, they were to attack them; but if they should not
shout to them, they were not to attack them: and thus the Paionians
proceeded to do. Now when the Perinthians were encamped opposite to them
in the suburb of their city, a challenge was made and a single combat took
place in three different forms; for they matched a man against a man, and
a horse against a horse, and a dog against a dog. Then, as the Perinthians
were getting the better in two of the three, in their exultation they
raised a shout of paion, 1 and the Paionians conjectured that this was the
very thing which was spoken of in the oracle, and said doubtless to one
another, "Now surely the oracle is being accomplished for us, now it is
time for us to act." So the Paionians attacked the Perinthians when they
had raised the shout of paion, and they had much the better in the fight,
and left but few of them alive.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2456
Author: Herodotus, 480? The proud city, after many years of supremacy over
the whole of Central Greece, has passed her zenith, and is surely
on the decline. She has never recovered from the blow received
at Coronea. The year has been one of gloom and foreboding.
The coming spring will bring the end of the five years' truce; and
an invasion from the Peloponnesus is imminent. But, as the centre
of learning, refinement, and the arts, the lustre of her fame is yet
undimmed, and men of education throughout the world deem their
lives incomplete until they have sought and reached this intellectual
Mecca. During this year a stranger from Halicarnassus, in
Asia Minor, after many years of travel in Asia, Scythia, Libya,
Egypt, and Magna Grcia, has taken up his abode at Athens. He
is still a young man, hardly thirty-seven, yet his fame is that of the
first and greatest of historians. Dramatists and poets immortal
there have been, but never man has written such exquisite prose.
Twenty centuries and more shall wear away, and his history will
be read in a hundred different tongues, as well as in the beautiful
and simple Greek that he wrote. His name will grow into a
household word; the school-boy will revel in his delightful tales,
and wise men will call him the Father of History! For weeks the
people of Athens have listened entranced to the public reading of
his great work, and now the Assembly has passed a decree tendering
to him the city's thanks, together with a most substantial gift in
recognition of his talentsa purse of money equal to twelve
thousand American dollars.
{iv}
Such is the account which Eusebius gives, and others to whom
we may fairly accord belief; and it adds no slight tinge of romance
to the picture to discover among the listening throng the figure of
the boy Thucydides, moved to tears by the recital, who then and
there received the impulse that made of him also a great student
and writer of history. Herodotus, noticing how intensely his
reading had affected the youth, turned to Olorus, the father of
Thucydides, who was standing near, and said: "Olorus, thy son's
soul yearns after knowledge."
Herodotus was born at Halicarnassus, 484 B.C., and died
at Thurium in Italy, about the year 425. As in the case of
Plutarch, our knowledge of his personal history is very meagre,
aside from the little we glean from his own writings. His parents,
Lyxes and Rho, appear to have been of high rank and consideration
in Halicarnassus, and possessed of ample means; and his
acquaintance both at home and in Athens was of the best. A
lover of poetry and a poet by nature, the whole plan of his work,
the tone and character of his thoughts, and a multitude of words
and expressions, show him to have been perfectly familiar with the
Homeric writings. There is scarcely an author previous to his time
with whose works he does not appear to have been thoroughly
acquainted. Hecatus, to be sure, was almost the only writer of
prose who had attained any distinction, for prose composition was
practically in its infancy; but from him and from several others, too
obscure even to be named, he freely quotes, while the poets,
Hesiod, Olen, Musus, Archilochus, the authors of the "Cypria" and
the "Epigoni," Alcus, Sappho, Solon, sop, Aristeas, Simonides
of Ceos, Phrynichus, schylus, and Pindar, are referred to, or
quoted, in such a way as to show an intimate acquaintance with
their works.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 55758
Author: Herodotus, 480? No doubt the greatest
final achievements of the Greek race belong to the
two centuries that followed. But practically all that is meant by the
Greek spirit and the Greek genius had its birth in the earlier period.
Literature and art, philosophy and science are at this present day
largely following the lines that were then laid down for them, and
this is equally the case with commerce. |(a) of the first known metal coins,|
It was at the opening of
this epoch that the Greeks or their half hellenized
neighbours the Lydians brought about perhaps the
most epoch-making revolution in the whole history
of commerce by the invention of a metal coinage like those that
are still in circulation throughout the civilized world.
It was no accident that the invention was made precisely at this
time. Industry and commerce were simultaneously making enormous
strides. About the beginning of the seventh century the new
Lydian Dynasty of the Mermnadae made Sardis one of the most
important trading centres that have arisen in the worlds history.
The Lydian merchants became middlemen between Greece and the
Far East. Egypt recovered its prosperity and began rapidly to develop
commercial and other relations with its neighbours, including
the Greeks. Greek traders were pushing their goods by sea in all
directions from Spain to the Crimea. Concrete evidence of this
activity is still to be seen in the Corinthian and Milesian pottery
of the period that has been so abundantly unearthed as far afield as
Northern Italy and Southern Russia. It was a time of extraordinary
intellectual alertness. Thales and the numerous other philosophers
of the Ionian School were in close touch with the merchants and
manufacturers of their age. They were in fact men of science rather
than philosophers in the narrow modern sense of the latter word,
2and most of them were ready to apply their science to practical and
commercial ends, as for example Thales, who is said to have made a
fortune by buying up all the oil presses in advance when his agricultural
observations had led him to expect a particularly plentiful
harvest[1]. A corner in oil sounds very modern, and in fact the whole
of the evidence shows that in many ways this ancient epoch curiously
anticipated the present age.
Politically these two centuries are generally known as the age of
tyrants. The view that the prevalence of tyranny was
in some way connected with the invention of coinage
has been occasionally expressed[2]. Radet has even
gone so far as to suggest that the first tyrant was
also the first coiner[3]. He does not however go further than to suggest
that the tyrant started a mint and coinage when already on
the throne.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 62364
Author: Ure, P. He is known for the brilliant dialogues in which he depicted his teacher, Socrates, discussing ethical truths with prominent citizens of Athens. Yet the image we have of Plato--an ethereal figure far removed from society and politics, who conjured abstract ideas in peaceful groves--is a fiction, created by Plato's admirers and built up over centuries. In fact, Plato was very much a man of the world.

In Plato and the Tyrant, acclaimed historian and classicist James Romm draws on personal letters of Plato--documents that have long been kept in obscurity--to show how a philosopher helped topple the leading Greek power of the era: the opulent city of Syracuse. There, Plato encountered two authoritarian rulers, a father and son both named Dionysius, and tried to steer them toward philosophy. At the same time, he worked on his masterpiece, Republic, in which he conceived a ruler who unites perfect wisdom with absolute power. That dream has echoed down through the ages and given rise to a famous term, one that Plato himself didn't actually use: philosopher-king.

As Romm reveals, Plato's time in Syracuse helped shape Republic--and also had disastrous results for Plato himself and for all of Greek Sicily. The younger Dionysius, emotionally unstable but intellectually curious, welcomed Plato with open arms, but soon the relationship soured. Plato's close friendship with Dionysius's uncle, Dion--possibly a bond of romantic love--created a rift in the ruling family that led to a chaotic civil war.

Combining thrilling political drama with explorations of Plato's most cherished ideas, Romm takes us into the heart of Greece's late classical age, a time when many believed that democracy had failed. Plato's search for solutions led him to write his fervent plea for a new political order, and also led him to a place where he believed his theories might be put into practice. But Plato and the Tyrant demonstrates how Plato's experiment with enlightened autocracy spiraled into catastrophe, and also gives us nothing less than a new account of the origins of Western political thought.

Author: James Romm
Publisher: W. The author of six books which together have exerted the profoundest and most far-reaching influence outside as well as inside academia, for years Peter Kingsley has lectured very widely -- speaking to professional scholars, psychologists and followers of different spiritual traditions, healers and medical practitioners as well as people who very simply are aware of the need to wake up to a reality greater than the one we are used to. When they do take a larger role, women are often portrayed as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil--like Pandora, the woman of eternal scorn and damnation whose curiosity is tasked with causing all the world's suffering and wickedness when she opened that forbidden box. But, as Natalie Haynes reveals, in ancient Greek myths there was no box. With wit, humor, and savvy, Haynes revolutionizes our understanding of epic poems, stories, and plays, resurrecting them from a woman's perspective and tracing the origins of their mythic female characters. She looks at women such as Jocasta, Oedipus' mother-turned-lover-and-wife (turned Freudian sticking point), at once the cleverest person in the story and yet often unnoticed. She considers Helen of Troy, whose marriage to Paris "caused" the Trojan war--a somewhat uneven response to her decision to leave her husband for another man. She demonstrates how the vilified Medea was like an ancient Beyonce--getting her revenge on the man who hurt and betrayed her, if by extreme measures. And she turns her eye to Medusa, the original monstered woman, whose stare turned men to stone, but who wasn't always a monster, and had her hair turned to snakes as punishment for being raped.

Pandora's Jar brings nuance and care to the millennia-old myths and legends and asks the question: Why are we so quick to villainize these women in the first place--and so eager to accept the stories we've been told?

Author: Natalie Haynes
Publisher: Harper Perennial
Published: 03/29/2022
Pages: 320
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.50lbs
Size: 8.00h x 5.20w x 0.90d
ISBN: 9780063139466

Review Citation(s):
Library Journal Prepub Alert 10/01/2021 pg. 19
Booklist 01/01/2022 pg. 19
Publishers Weekly 01/31/2022
Kirkus Reviews 03/15/2022

About the Author
Haynes, Natalie: -
Natalie Haynes is the author of eight books, including the nonfiction work Pandora's Jar, which was a New York Times bestseller, and the novels A Thousand Ships, which was a national bestseller and short-listed for the 2020 Women's Prize for Fiction, and Stone Blind. She has written and recorded eleven series of Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics for the BBC. In these four dialogues, Plato develops the Socratic belief in responsibility for one's self and shows Socrates living and dying under his philosophy. In Euthyphro, Socrates debates goodness outside the courthouse; Apology sees him in court, rebutting all charges of impiety; in Crito, he refuses an entreaty to escape from prison; and in Phaedo, Socrates faces his impending death with calmness and skilful discussion of immortality. But in reality, five determined people had an overwhelming impact on making those things come about. And the rich details of their lives give us a deep and satisfying look into how the fabulous Golden Age of Athens came into being. Socrates, of course, was one of those people. But how did he rise from working as a stonemason to being one of the world's greatest philosophers? Why did the early tyrant Peisistratos create prestigious prizes for theatre plays, motivating Aeschylus, Euripides and others to spend their lives producing masterful works? What childhood experiences caused Pericles, the most famous leader of Athens, to erect monumental buildings such as the Parthenon even though he was already struggling to preserve the city's innovative democracy? How did Aspasia manage to make her way into the highest echelons of Athenian society and influence the work of Pericles and Socrates? How close did the Athenian general Alcibiades come to winning the devastating Peloponnesian War, before he was forced out by the city's demagogues? Other remarkable people certainly contributed to the life of Athens, and we see many of them here. But these five Athenians raised their city to a higher level than those around them, and became some of the brightest stars illuminating the Golden Age of Greece.

Author: Sanford Holst
Publisher: Santorini Publishing
Published: 10/28/2016
Pages: 272
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.89lbs
Size: 9.02h x 5.98w x 0.61d
ISBN: 9781945199011

About the Author
Sanford Holst is a historian whose books bring the ancient Mediterranean to life. In four superb dialogues, Plato provides the classic account. Euthyphro finds Socrates outside the court-house, debating the nature of piety, while the Apology is his robust rebuttal of the charges of impiety and a defence of the philosopher's life. In the Crito, while awaiting execution in prison, Socrates counters the arguments of friends urging him to escape. Finally, in the Phaedo, he is shown calmly confident in the face of death, skilfully arguing the case for the immortality of the soul.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. AD 46 - c. 120), later named, upon becoming a Roman citizen, Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus, was a Greek biographer and essayist, known primarily for his Parallel Lives and Moralia. Plutarch was born to a prominent family in the small town of Chaeronea, about 80 kilometres (50 mi) east of Delphi, in the Greek region of Boeotia. Plutarch studied mathematics and philosophy at the Academy of Athens under Ammonius. Plutarch lived most of his life at Chaeronea, and was initiated into the mysteries of the Greek god Apollo. For many years Plutarch served as one of the two priests at the temple of Apollo at Delphi, the site of the famous Delphic Oracle, twenty miles from his home. He probably took part in the Eleusinian Mysteries. By his writings and lectures Plutarch became a celebrity in the Roman Empire, yet he continued to reside where he was born, and actively participated in local affairs, even serving as mayor. At his country estate, guests from all over the empire congregated for serious conversation, presided over by Plutarch in his marble chair. Plutarch was also a magistrate at Chaeronea and he represented his home town on various missions to foreign countries during his early adult years. A sojourn in Athens is part of the traditional biography, and there he is said to have given public readings of his work and been friends with the playwright Sophocles. He is said also to have taken part in the founding of the colony of Thurii in Italy in 443 BC. He probably died at some time between 415 and 410 BC. How should we love? What constitutes a good society? Is there a soul that outlasts the body and a truth that transcends appearance? What do we know and how do we know it? Plato's inquiries were all the more resonant because he couched them in the form of dramatic and often highly comic dialogues, whose principal personage was the ironic, teasing, and relentlessly searching philosopher Socrates.
In this splendid collection, Scott Buchanan brings together the most important of Plato's dialogues, including Protagoras, The Symposium, with its barbed conjectures about the relation between love and madness, Phaedo and The Republic, his monumental work of political philosophy.
