I have attempted to describe the manners and
customs of the people as accurately as possible from the impressions
which my visit to their country left upon me, but of course I do not
claim that these personal opinions expressed are absolutely infallible.
My sojourn extended over several months, and I never during all that time
neglected any opportunity of studying the natives, giving my observations
as they were made a permanent form by the aid both of pen and of brush. I
was afforded specially favourable chances for this kind of work through
the kind hospitality shown me by the Vice-Minister of Home Affairs and
Adviser to the King, Mr. C.R. Greathouse, to whom I feel greatly indebted
for my prolonged and delightful stay in the country, as well as for the
amiable and valuable assistance which he and General Le Gendre, Foreign
Adviser to His Corean Majesty, gave me in my observations and studies
among the upper classes of Corea. I am also under great obligations to
Mr. Seradin Sabatin, Architect to His Majesty the King, and to Mr. Krien,
German Consul at Seoul, for the kindness and hospitality with which they
treated me on my first arrival at their city.
The illustrations in this book are reproductions of sketches taken by me
while in the country, and though, perhaps, they want much in artistic
merit, I venture to hope that they will be found characteristic.
For literary style I hope my readers will not look. Official records are
carefully kept in the government archives and when the
dynasty closes these are published by the new dynasty.
There is an official record which is published under the
name of the Kuk-cho Po-gam but it can in no sense be
called a history, for it can contain nothing that is not
complimentary to the ruling house and, moreover, it has
not been brought down even to the opening of the 19th
century. It has been necessary therefore to find private
iimanuscript histories of the dynasty and by uniting and
comparing them secure as accurate a delineation as possible
of the salient features of modern Korean history.
In this I have enjoyed the services of a Korean scholar
who has made the history of this dynasty a special study
for the past twenty-five years and who has had access
to a large number of private manuscripts. I withhold
his name by special request. By special courtesy I have
also been granted access to one of the largest and most
complete private libraries in the capital. Japanese records
have also been consulted in regard to special points
bearing on the relations between Korea and Japan.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 52127
Author: Hulbert, Homer B. The thing that we must always reckon with is
the ancient feeling of enmity aroused, in the first place,
by the devastating raids of Japanese freebooters during
the tenth, eleventh and twelfth centuries. At that time
the Koreans suffered so severely that the very name of
Japanese became the synonym of all that was dreadful
and to be hated. This was further intensified by the
great invasion of 1592 when the Koreans suffered untold
things at the hands of the temporary conquerors. The
result of these things are clearly seen in Korean character
today. It would be very hard to find a Korean child
who does not drink in, almost with his mothers milk, a
feeling of dislike against the Japanese. On the other
hand the Japanese seem to have imbibed as strong a feeling
toward the Korean. Like
the Saxon shore of early Britain, the coast of Echizen had been in primeval times
the landing-place of rovers, immigrants, and adventurers from the continental shore
opposite. Here, at Tsuruga, Corean envoys had landed on their way to the mikados
court. New mother Chŏn Sukhŭi marveled at the news, envisioning her son growing up free in an independent Korea. Yi Ilchae, who only days before had been drafted into the Japanese army, threw himself into union activism. An electrifying excitement jolted Koreans into action everywhere. Peasants occupied Japanese-owned farmlands, workers seized control of factories, and women demanded political and economic equality.

A Fractured Liberation brings to vivid life the brief but intense moment in postwar Korea when anything seemed possible, but nothing was guaranteed. The country had been abruptly split into US and Soviet military occupation zones, but, as Kornel Chang shows, ordinary people threw themselves into achieving self-governance throughout a unified Korea. The mostly left-leaning efforts were bolstered by an eclectic group of American supporters, including New Deal liberals, Christian socialists, and trade unionists.

The Koreans' greatest obstacle, however, proved to be the US military government in the south and its rigidly anti-communist leadership. Despite promising liberation from the hated Japanese-imposed institutions, the US occupation government under General John R. Hodge hired back Koreans who had worked for the Japanese to do the dirty work of curbing protests and muzzling reformers. Without you, there is no us. It is a chilling scene, but gradually Suki Kim, too, learns the tune and, without noticing, begins to hum it. It is 2011, and all universities in North Korea have been shut down for an entire year, the students sent to construction fields--except for the 270 students at the all-male Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), a walled compound where portraits of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il look on impassively from the walls of every room, and where Suki has gone undercover as a missionary and a teacher. Over the next six months, she will eat three meals a day with her young charges and struggle to teach them English, all under the watchful eye of the regime.

Life at PUST is lonely and claustrophobic, especially for Suki, whose letters are read by censors and who must hide her notes and photographs not only from her minders but from her colleagues--evangelical Christian missionaries who don't know or choose to ignore that Suki doesn't share their faith. As the weeks pass, she is mystified by how easily her students lie, unnerved by their obedience to the regime. At the same time, they offer Suki tantalizing glimpses of their private selves--their boyish enthusiasm, their eagerness to please, the flashes of curiosity that have not yet been extinguished. She in turn begins to hint at the existence of a world beyond their own--at such exotic activities as surfing the Internet or traveling freely and, more dangerously, at electoral democracy and other ideas forbidden in a country where defectors risk torture and execution. Wit also offers an unparalleled portrait of Kim Jong Un that refutes his caricature as impulsive and illogical. Like his father and his grandfather, Kim is a ruthless despot but also a canny and informed negotiator determined to secure his dictatorship's future by exploring diplomacy or, failing that, by building a nuclear arsenal.

Author: Joel S. Then disaster struck: the first wave of the Great Famine, a long, terrible ordeal that killed millions, including his father, and sent others, like his mother and only sister, on desperate escape routes into China. Alone on the streets, Joseph learned to beg and steal. He had nothing but a street-hardened survival instinct. Finally, in desperation, he too crossed a frozen river to escape to China. There a kindly Christian woman took him in, kept him hidden from the authorities, and gave him hope. Soon, through an underground network of activists, he was spirited to the American consulate, and became one of just a handful of North Koreans to be brought to the U.S. as refugees. Joseph knew no English barely had an education. Yet the kindness of his foster family changed his life. South Korean feminists know that the revolution has been a long time coming, between battles against its own patriarchal society as well as challenging stereotypes of docile Asian women in the Western imagination.

Now, author Hawon Jung will show the rest of the world that these women are no delicate flowers--they are trailblazing flames. Flowers of Fire takes the reader into the trenches of this fight for equality, following along as South Korean activists march on the streets, navigate public and private spaces where spycam porn crimes are rampant, and share tips and tricks with each other as they learn how to protect themselves from harassment and how to push authorities to act.

Jung, the former Seoul correspondent for the AFP, draws on her on-the-ground reporting and interviews with many women who became activists and leaders, from the elite prosecutor who ignited the country's #MeToo movement to the young women who led the war against non-consensual photography. Their stories, though long overlooked in the West, mirror realities that women across the world are all too familiar with: threats of defamation lawsuits to silence victims of assault, tech-based sexual abuse, and criminal justice systems where victims' voices are often met with suspicion and abusers' downfalls are met with sympathy. These are the issues at the heart of their #MeToo movement, and South Korean women have fought against them vigorously--and with extraordinary success. In Flowers of Fire, Jung illuminates the strength and tenacity of these women, too often sidelined in global conversations about feminism and gender equality.

Author: Hawon Jung
Publisher: Benbella Books
Published: 03/07/2023
Pages: 304
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 1.01lbs
Size: 8.90h x 5.98w x 1.18d
ISBN: 9781637742419

Review Citation(s):
Publishers Weekly 01/23/2023

About the Author
Hawon Jung is a journalist and former Seoul correspondent for the AFP news agency with more than a decade of experience writing about the two Koreas. By focusing on the experience of rural-to-urban migrants who built and lived in Seoul's shantytowns, Burge historicizes national development as a site of struggle with the urban poor at its center. What would a society of postcolonial abundance look like? Who was this society built for, and how would access to the city that formed its economic center be claimed and defended? These were the questions at stake in the urban struggles of the 1960s and 1970s, an era when authorities found themselves caught between a mandate to create well-disciplined cities and the promise of broad uplift that legitimated their leadership. Utilizing memoirs, interviews, newspapers, journals, photographs, literature, anthropological records, and critical as well as official sources, Burge reconstructs a not-altogether-vanished world and provides historical background of conflicts over urban access and inequality that continue to enrage and resonate to this day.

Author: Russell Burge
Publisher: Harvard University Press
Published: 06/02/2026
Pages: 360
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.51lbs
Size: 9.27h x 6.29w x 1.30d
ISBN: 9780674304819

About the Author
Burge, Russell: - Russell Burge is Korea Foundation Assistant Professor of Korean History at Indiana University Bloomington.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_dd3c252a-97df-401b-8b54-e8c86d0429c6.jpg?v=1785313629
gwangju-uprising-the-rebellion-for-democracy-in-south-korea-9781788737142
Gwangju Uprising: The Rebellion for Democracy in South Korea
The essential account of the South Korean 1980 pro-democracy rebellion

On May 18, 1980, student activists gathered in the South Korean city of Gwangju to protest the coup d'état and the martial law government of General Chun Doo-hwan.
