The whole period extends from the age of Trajan and the Antonines,
to the taking of Constantinople by Mahomet the Second; and includes a
review of the Crusades, and the state of Rome during the middle ages.
      Since the publication of the first volume, twelve years have elapsed;
twelve years, according to my wish, of health, of leisure, and of
perseverance. I may now congratulate my deliverance from a long and
laborious service, and my satisfaction will be pure and perfect, if the
public favor should be extended to the conclusion of my work.

It was my first intention to have collected, under one view, the numerous
authors, of every age and language, from whom I have derived the materials
of this history; and I am still convinced that the apparent ostentation
would be more than compensated by real use. If I have renounced this idea,
if I have declined an undertaking which had obtained the approbation of a
master-artist,4 my excuse may be found in the extreme difficulty
of assigning a proper measure to such a catalogue. A naked list of names
and editions would not be satisfactory either to myself or my readers: the
characters of the principal Authors of the Roman and Byzantine History
have been occasionally connected with the events which they describe; a
more copious and critical inquiry might indeed deserve, but it would
demand, an elaborate volume, which might swell by degrees into a general
library of historical writers. For the present, I shall content myself
with renewing my serious protestation, that I have always endeavored to
draw from the fountain-head; that my curiosity, as well as a sense of
duty, has always urged me to study the originals; and that, if they have
sometimes eluded my search, I have carefully marked the secondary
evidence, on whose faith a passage or a fact were reduced to depend.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 731
Author: Gibbon, Edward
Release Date: Jun 7, 2008
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/731_f5038220-0db3-473a-b1b9-5cf25ccd6b80.jpg?v=1671248700
history-of-the-decline-and-fall-of-the-roman-empire-volume-2-gb-732
History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire — Volume 2

History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire — Volume 2

The Government And Death Of Jovian.Election Of
Valentinian, Who Associates His Brother Valens, And Makes
The Final Division Of The Eastern And Western Empires.
Revolt Of Procopius.Civil And Ecclesiastical
Administration.Germany.Britain.Africa.The East.
The Danube.Death Of Valentinian. His Two Sons, Gratian
And Valentinian II., Succeed To The Western Empire.

Manners Of The Pastoral Nations.Progress Of The Huns, From
China To Europe.Flight Of The Goths. They Pass The
Danube.Gothic War.Defeat And Death Of Valens.Gratian
Invests Theodosius With The Eastern Empire. His Character
And Success.Peace And Settlement Of The Goths.

1111 (return) [ The sixteenth chapter
I cannot help considering as a very ingenious and specious, but very
disgraceful extenuation of the cruelties perpetrated by the Roman
magistrates against the Christians. It is written in the most contemptibly
factious spirit of prejudice against the sufferers; it is unworthy of a
philosopher and of humanity. Let the narrative of Cyprians death be
examined. He had to relate the murder of an innocent man of advanced age,
and in a station deemed venerable by a considerable body of the
provincials of Africa, put to death because he refused to sacrifice to
Jupiter. Instead of pointing the indignation of posterity against such an
atrocious act of tyranny, he dwells, with visible art, on the small
circumstances of decorum and politeness which attended this murder, and
which he relates with as much parade as if they were the most important
particulars of the event. Dr. Robertson has been the subject of much blame
for his real or supposed lenity towards the Spanish murderers and tyrants
in America. That the sixteenth chapter of Mr. G. did not excite the same
or greater disapprobation, is a proof of the unphilosophical and indeed
fanatical animosity against Christianity, which was so prevalent during
the latter part of the eighteenth century.Mackintosh: see Life, i.
      p. 244, 245.]

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 732
Author: Gibbon, Edward
Release Date: Jun 7, 2008
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/732_bf861b5e-2922-42f4-87f8-957b63d22648.jpg?v=1671248701
history-of-the-decline-and-fall-of-the-roman-empire-volume-3-gb-733
History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire — Volume 3

History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire — Volume 3

Invasion Of Italy By Alaric.Manners Of The Roman Senate
And People.Rome Is Thrice Besieged, And At Length
Pillaged, By The Goths.Death Of Alaric. The Goths
Evacuate Italy.Fall Of Constantine.Gaul And Spain Are
Occupied By The Barbarians. His gentle and
amiable disposition endeared him to his private friends, the graceful
affability of his manners engaged the affection of the people: the men of
letters, who enjoyed the liberality, acknowledged the taste and eloquence,
of their sovereign; his valor and dexterity in arms were equally applauded
by the soldiers; and the clergy considered the humble piety of Gratian as
the first and most useful of his virtues. The victory of Colmar had
delivered the West from a formidable invasion; and the grateful provinces
of the East ascribed the merits of Theodosius to the author of his
greatness, and of the public safety. Gratian survived those memorable
events only four or five years; but he survived his reputation; and,
before he fell a victim to rebellion, he had lost, in a great measure, the
respect and confidence of the Roman world.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 733
Author: Gibbon, Edward
Release Date: Jun 7, 2008
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/733_39df341b-2b99-4d4c-929f-57bef4dbce80.jpg?v=1671248703
history-of-the-decline-and-fall-of-the-roman-empire-volume-4-gb-734
History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire — Volume 4

History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire — Volume 4

Zeno And Anastasius, Emperors Of The East.Birth, Education, And First
Exploits Of Theodoric The Ostrogoth. His Invasion And Conquest Of
Italy. The Gothic Kingdom Of Italy.State Of The
West.Military And Civil Government.The Senator
Boethius.Last Acts And Death Of Theodoric.

Elevation Of Justin The Elder.Reign Of Justinian.I. Whatever had been his fears and
toils in the passage of the first crusade, they were amply recompensed by
the subsequent benefits which he derived from the exploits of the Franks.
His dexterity and vigilance secured their first conquest of Nice; and from
this threatening station the Turks were compelled to evacuate the
neighborhood of Constantinople. While the crusaders, with blind valor,
advanced into the midland countries of Asia, the crafty Greek improved the
favorable occasion when the emirs of the sea-coast were recalled to the
standard of the sultan. The Turks were driven from the Isles of Rhodes and
Chios: the cities of Ephesus and Smyrna, of Sardes, Philadelphia, and
Laodicea, were restored to the empire, which Alexius enlarged from the
Hellespont to the banks of the Mander, and the rocky shores of Pamphylia.
      The churches resumed their splendor: the towns were rebuilt and fortified;
and the desert country was peopled with colonies of Christians, who were
gently removed from the more distant and dangerous frontier. In these
paternal cares, we may forgive Alexius, if he forgot the deliverance of
the holy sepulchre; but, by the Latins, he was stigmatized with the foul
reproach of treason and desertion. They had sworn fidelity and obedience
to his throne; but he had promised to assist their enterprise in
person, or, at least, with his troops and treasures: his base retreat
dissolved their obligations; and the sword, which had been the instrument
of their victory, was the pledge and title of their just independence. It
does not appear that the emperor attempted to revive his obsolete claims
over the kingdom of Jerusalem; 2 but the borders of Cilicia and Syria were more
recent in his possession, and more accessible to his arms. The great army
of the crusaders was annihilated or dispersed; the principality of Antioch
was left without a head, by the surprise and captivity of Bohemond; his
ransom had oppressed him with a heavy debt; and his Norman followers were
insufficient to repel the hostilities of the Greeks and Turks. In this
distress, Bohemond embraced a magnanimous resolution, of leaving the
defence of Antioch to his kinsman, the faithful Tancred; of arming the
West against the Byzantine empire; and of executing the design which he
inherited from the lessons and example of his father Guiscard. His
embarkation was clandestine: and, if we may credit a tale of the princess
Anne, he passed the hostile sea closely secreted in a coffin. 3 But his
reception in France was dignified by the public applause, and his marriage
with the kings daughter: his return was glorious, since the bravest
spirits of the age enlisted under his veteran command; and he repassed the
Adriatic at the head of five thousand horse and forty thousand foot,
assembled from the most remote climates of Europe. 4 The strength of Durazzo, and
prudence of Alexius, the progress of famine and approach of winter, eluded
his ambitious hopes; and the venal confederates were seduced from his
standard. A treaty of peace 5 suspended the fears of the Greeks; and they were
finally delivered by the death of an adversary, whom neither oaths could
bind, nor dangers could appal, nor prosperity could satiate. His children
succeeded to the principality of Antioch; but the boundaries were strictly
defined, the homage was clearly stipulated, and the cities of Tarsus and
Malmistra were restored to the Byzantine emperors. Of the coast of
Anatolia, they possessed the entire circuit from Trebizond to the Syrian
gates. The Seljukian dynasty of Roum 6 was separated on all sides
from the sea and their Mussulman brethren; the power of the sultan was
shaken by the victories and even the defeats of the Franks; and after the
loss of Nice, they removed their throne to Cogni or Iconium, an obscure
and in land town above three hundred miles from Constantinople. 7 Instead
of trembling for their capital, the Comnenian princes waged an offensive
war against the Turks, and the first crusade prevented the fall of the
      declining empire.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 736
Author: Gibbon, Edward
Release Date: Nov 1, 1996
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/736_d7603194-4c5b-4d1c-ac15-83950cb55ce3.jpg?v=1671248709
history-of-the-decline-and-fall-of-the-roman-empire-volume-1-gb-890
History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire — Volume 1

History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire — Volume 1

The great work of Gibbon is indispensable to the student of history. The
literature of Europe offers no substitute for The Decline and Fall of the
Roman Empire. It has obtained undisputed possession, as rightful
occupant, of the vast period which it comprehends. However some subjects,
which it embraces, may have undergone more complete investigation, on the
general view of the whole period, this history is the sole undisputed
authority to which all defer, and from which few appeal to the original
writers, or to more modern compilers. The inherent interest of the
subject, the inexhaustible labor employed upon it; the immense
      condensation of matter; the luminous arrangement; the general accuracy;
the style, which, however monotonous from its uniform stateliness, and
sometimes wearisome from its elaborate art, is throughout vigorous,
animated, often picturesque, always commands attention, always conveys its
meaning with emphatic energy, describes with singular breadth and
fidelity, and generalizes with unrivalled felicity of expression; all
these high qualifications have secured, and seem likely to secure, its
      permanent place in historic literature.

This vast design of Gibbon, the magnificent whole into which he has cast
the decay and ruin of the ancient civilization, the formation and birth of
the new order of things, will of itself, independent of the laborious
execution of his immense plan, render The Decline and Fall of the Roman
Empire an unapproachable subject to the future historian:* in the
eloquent language of his recent French editor, M. And
afterwards the Pope sent a cardinal of his, Master Peter of Capua, who himself
had taken the cross, to proclaim the Indulgence of which I now tell you, viz.,
that all who should take the cross and serve in the host for one year, would be
delivered from all the sins they had committed, and acknowledged in confession.
And because this indulgence was so great, the hearts of men were much moved,
and many took the cross for the greatness of the pardon.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 6032
Author: Villehardouin, Geoffroi de
Release Date: Jul 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/6032_2a102c16-3b55-4ce7-8685-fb44bb33627c.jpg?v=1671282066
the-secret-history-of-the-court-of-justinian-gb-12916
The Secret History of the Court of Justinian

The Secret History of the Court of Justinian

I have thus described the fortunes of the Romans in their wars up to
the present day, as far as possible assigning the description of
events to their proper times and places. What follows will not be
arranged with the same exactness, but everything shall be written down
as it took place throughout the whole extent of the Roman empire. My
reason for this is, that it would not have been expedient for me to
describe these events fully while those who were their authors were
still alive; for, had I done so, I could neither have escaped the
notice of the multitude of spies, nor, had I been detected, could I
have avoided a most horrible death; for I could not even have relied
upon my nearest relatives with confidence. Indeed, I have been forced
to conceal the real causes of many of the events recounted in my
former books. It will now be my duty, in this part of my history, to
tell what has hitherto remained untold, and to state the real motives
and origin of the actions which I have already recounted. But, when
undertaking this new task, how painful and hard will it be, to be
obliged to falter and contradict myself as to what I have said about
the lives of Justinian and Theodora: and particularly so, when I
reflect that what I am about to write will not appear to future
generations either credible or probable, especially when a long lapse
of years shall have made them old stories; for which reason I fear
that I may be looked upon as a romancer, and reckoned among
playwrights. However, I shall have the courage not to shrink from this
important work, because my story will not lack witnesses; for the men
of to-day, who are the best informed witnesses of these facts, will
hand on trustworthy testimony of their truth to posterity. Yet, when I
was about to undertake this work, another objection often presented
itself to my mind, and for a long time held me in suspense.
I doubted whether it would be right to hand down these events to
posterity; for the wickedest actions had better remain unknown to
future times than come to the ears of tyrants, and be imitated by
them. For most rulers are easily led by lack of knowledge into
imitating the evil deeds of their predecessors, and find it their
easiest plan to walk in the evil ways of their forefathers.
Later, however, I was urged to record these matters, by the reflection
that those who hereafter may wish to play the tyrant will clearly see,
in the first place, that it is probable that retribution will fall
upon them for the evil that they may do, seeing that this was what
befell these people; and, secondly, that their actions and habits of
life will be published abroad for all time, and therefore they will
perhaps be less ready to transgress. Who, among posterity, would have
known of the licentious life of Semiramis, or of the madness of
Sardanapalus or Nero, if no memorials of them had been left to us by
contemporary writers? The description of such things, too, will not be
entirely without value to such as hereafter may be so treated by
tyrants; for unhappy people are wont to console themselves by the
thought that they are not the only persons who have so suffered. For
these reasons, I shall first give a description of the evil wrought by
Belisarius, and afterwards I shall describe the misdeeds of Justinian
and Theodora.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 12916
Author: Procopius
Release Date: Jul 16, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

Expedición de Catalanes y Aragoneses al Oriente

Por obedecer V.S. The whole period extends from the age of Trajan and the Antonines,
to the taking of Constantinople by Mahomet the Second; and includes a
review of the Crusades, and the state of Rome during the middle ages.
      Since the publication of the first volume, twelve years have elapsed;
twelve years, according to my wish, of health, of leisure, and of
perseverance.

Ebook Number: 25717
Author: Gibbon, Edward
Release Date: Jun 7, 2008
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Widger, David, 1932-

Taistelu Roomasta I - Historiallinen romaani

Raskaana pilveili paksu sumu tummapintaisen Adrian pll, jonka rannat
salamat loivat silloin tllin vrjvn valon hiljaiseen Ravennaan.
jljettmsti kadonnut Neptunuksen temppeli.
peitten melkein kokonaan vanhuksen leven rinnan.
Soihtu valaisi apollomaisen kauniit kasvot, joita hymyilevt
vaaleansiniset silmt kaunistivat; keskell otsaa jakautui
kullankeltainen tukka kahteen pitkn, pehmen suortuva-aaltoon, jotka
hykyivt molemmilla puolin hartioille saakka; suu ja nen olivat
melkein hennoista piirteistn huolimatta muodoltaan tydelliset, hieno
vaaleankeltainen parranalku peitti ystvllisesti hymyilevt huulet ja
hiukan halkonaisen leuan. From reasons easily understood, it was necessary to
shorten, or at least to disguise, this long interval.
The character of the Roman hero of the story, Cethegus
Csarius, is a
pure invention. That such a person existed is, however, known.
The work was begun at Munich in 1859, continued at Ravenna,
Italy, and
concluded at Knigsberg in 1876.
FELIX DAHN.
Knigsberg: January, 1876.
"Dietericus de Berne, de quo cantant rustici usque hodie."
It was a sultry summer night of the year five hundred and
twenty-six,
A.D.
Thick clouds lay low over the dark surface of the Adrea, whose
shores
and waters were melted together in undistinguishable gloom; only now
and then a flash of distant lightning lit up the silent city of
Ravenna. At unequal intervals the wind swept through the ilexes and
pines on the range of hills which rise at some distance to the west of
the town, and which were once crowned by a temple of Neptune.

[6]
opinioni, colle passioni, e cogl'interessi della presente
generazione.

L'istorico
Zosimo asserisce maliziosamente, ch'esso aveva
Conviene concedere a Costantino
[8]
s'avanz con un placido, sebbene accelerato moto;
Fu permesso a' suoi Ministri
che pi si accomodava a' respettivi loro principj[7];
ed egli artificiosamente bilanci le speranze ed
i timori de' propri sudditi, pubblicando nel medesimo
[9]
la regolar consultazione degli Aruspici[9]. Mentre
stava tuttavia sospesa quest'importante rivoluzione, i

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 45218
Author: Gibbon, Edward
Release Date: Mar 26, 2014
Format: eBook
Language: Italian

Contributors

Translator: Bertolotti, Davide, 1784-1860

Storia della decadenza e rovina dell'impero romano, volume 05

Governo e morte di Gioviano. I due suoi figli Graziano e Valentiniano II
succedono all'Impero Occidentale.

I Cristiani avean dimenticato
de' Romani si trovavano in seno al loro paese;
Gioviano era stato educato nella professione del Cristianesimo;
Furono aboliti gl'insidiosi
editti di Giuliano, le immunit Ecclesiastiche furono
restituite ed ampliate; e Gioviano condiscese sino a
[7]
Cristiani eran tutti concordi nell'alto e sincero applauso,
assalite, e forse rendute attonite pel singolar mescuglio
osservare i rigorosi precetti dell'Evangelo, e talvolta
Essi rinunziarono
l'uso del vino, della carne e del matrimonio;
prezzo dell'eterna felicit.
sesso, e d'uniforme disposizione; e presero i nomi
volontari associati[6].

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 45221
Author: Gibbon, Edward
Release Date: Mar 26, 2014
Format: eBook
Language: Italian

Contributors

Translator: Bertolotti, Davide, 1784-1860

Storia della decadenza e rovina dell'impero romano, volume 08

Stato del Mondo Barbaro. Leonida,
[6]
e dell'uomo avea preparato, e quasi assicurato
sarebbero stati egualmente capaci[1].
egli comandava erano state formate dalla consuetudine
della conquista e dalla disciplina dei secoli. Riguardato
erano snervate dal lusso, dal dispotismo e dalla superstizione;
Spagna e nell'Italia, nell'Affrica e nell'Egitto, sulle
Esausti erano i cittadini, eppure i
colla precaria fede e coll'indisciplinato servizio
I generali, moltiplicati
e colla sua pazienza e liberalit pareva invitarli
a replicare gli oltraggi[6]. Le chiavi di Cartagine,
di Roma e di Ravenna, venivano ossequiosamente presentate
[9]
al loro conquistatore, nel tempo che Antiochia
era distrutta dai Persiani, e tremava Giustiniano
per la salvezza di Costantinopoli.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 45222
Author: Gibbon, Edward
Release Date: Mar 26, 2014
Format: eBook
Language: Italian

Contributors

Translator: Bertolotti, Davide, 1784-1860

Storia della decadenza e rovina dell'impero romano, volume 09

Storia Teologica della dottrina dell'Incarnazione.
Natura umana e divina di Ges Cristo. In vece
spirituali turbarono la pace e l'unit della Chiesa;
incominciamento dell'ottavo secolo, e fino agli ultimi
scelsero cattivo istante, e temperamenti aspri anzi
alcuni proseliti[2], molto maggior numero l'interesse,
restaurazione, qual festa trionfale, dell'Ortodossia fu
vantaggi della tolleranza all'ombra dell'arabo califfato[3].
spirituale elesse a vittime i Paoliziani[4], la
[8]
inimicando i pi utili confederati, irritando
i pi pericolosi nemici, l'invilimento e la
caduta dell'Impero romano d'Oriente affrett.

i Latini.
In tutti i tempi,
barbari,[3] immersi nelle tenebre
[7]
degli Orientali, autori di tutte le eresie, disprezzavano;
attributo divino, veniva considerato dai Cattolici come
una sostanza, una persona, un Dio. Comunque
Condannavano
[9]
della sua temporale politica naturalmente cedettero;
furono d'allora in poi riguardati come parte
della Fede cattolica, indispensabilmente necessaria all'eterna
salute, e tutti i Cristiani d'Occidente, sieno
chiese lontane e independenti, a variazioni debbono
[11]
men sensibile per essi dagli anni.
col lievito o senza lievito.
scagliati contro i Latini, i quali lungo tempo
o strozzati: praticavano ogni sabbato il digiuno mosaico;
degli animali, talvolta alla mancanza d'olio suppliva;
riserbavasi all'Ordine episcopale l'amministrazione
[12]

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 45226
Author: Gibbon, Edward
Release Date: Mar 26, 2014
Format: eBook
Language: Italian

Contributors

Translator: Bertolotti, Davide, 1784-1860

I monumenti de' Consoli e de' Cesari, de' Martiri
magnificando poi ancora i men saldi
men rilevante, e potendosi introdurre nelle sue fosse
[8]
fervore de' successori di Costantino. A questa grande
fabbrica somministrarono i marmi le isole addiacenti
che ne erano provvedutissime; gli altri materiali
vennero trasportati dal fondo dell'Europa e dell'Asia;
e dell'Asia; onde i dintorni di Bisanzo fino all'Eussino,
all'Ellesponto e al gran Muraglione somigliano
I pi
Dispersi
vedeansi sul suolo i frantumi delle tombe degl'Imperatori;
e i turbini e i tremuoti avevano aiutato
monumenti favolosi d'oro o d'argento. Per Manuele
[9]
S. I believe there is such an "audiobook"
edition available commercially, but it isn't free. Experimenting
some years ago with the text-to-speech software then available, I
thought it would be very funny, the private joke of a modern American
barbarian, to have the "little stuffed voices" rendering, in their
innocent and patient way, the imposing yet effervescent bulk of
Gibbon's magnificent and immortal marble-pillared prose. To my
amazement, if not to the credit of my taste, I've found this shotgun
wedding of sound and sense quite harmonious, vital, and durable
through many years of repeated listening. I find that the voices,
unembodied and wooden at first audit, but softer, incarnate,
personalized by acclimatization, pack more expression and clarity
of diction into a few megabytes of software than is exhibited by
most humans I hear these days, except for trained entertainment
professionals and seasoned barroom raconteurs. I propose that the
relentless yet measured deadpan delivery, the ironic contrast of
unwitting voice and worldly wise content, is a plausible fit to the
objective, slightly distant facade of Gibbon's dense and rational,
waste-no-word, 18th century style; a foil to his balanced tone,
restrained despite dudgeon, covering a tale that is, face it, in its
majority, a mordant chronicle, incarnadinedmy favorite period
bon motby battle, gore, and treachery. In order to make the story intelligible and to
explain its significance I have given a summary of the
history of the empire between the Latin conquest in 1204
and the capture of the city in 1453, and have traced the
progress during the same period of the race which succeeded
in destroying the empire and in replacing the Greeks as
the possessors of New Rome.
It may be objected that the task which I have set before
me has already been accomplished by Gibbon, and that, as
his chapter on the last siege of the city is carefully compiled
and written with a brilliancy of style which he has nowhere
surpassed, there is no need for any further study of the
subject. My answer is twofold: first, that an important
mass of new material is now at the disposal of any one who
wishes to retell the story, and second, that Gibbon told it
with a bias which makes it desirable that it should be retold.
The historian of the Decline and Fall had less than
half the material before him which is now available, and the
story of the siege deserves telling with more accuracy and
completeness than either the authorities available to him or
the scope of his monumental work permitted. It is true
that Professor J. B. Bury, the latest editor of Gibbon, has,
by the aid of scholarly notes and of careful research, enabled
the reader to become possessed of many of the details
vi
regarding the siege which have recently become known, but
he would be the first to admit that there is ample room for
a fuller history of the siege than that given in the Decline
and Fall even with the aid of his valuable notes.1 Gibbon
himself regretted the poverty of his materials and especially
that he had not been able to obtain any Turkish accounts
of the siege.2 The only eye-witnesses whose narratives
were before him were Phrantzes, Archbishop Leonard, and
Cardinal Isidore. If we add to their narratives the accounts
given by Ducas and Chalcondylas together with what Gibbon
himself calls short hints of Cantemir and Leunclavius, we
have substantially all the sources of information which were
available when the Decline and Fall was written.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 58119
Author: Pears, Edwin
Release Date: Oct 17, 2018
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Empresses of Constantinople

In concluding an earlier volume on the mistresses of
the western Roman Empire I observed that, as the
gallery of fair and frail ladies closed, we stood at
the door of the long, quaint gallery of the Byzantine
Empresses. It seemed natural and desirable to pass on
to this more interesting and less familiar series of the
mistresses of the eastern Roman Empire, and the present
volume will therefore tell the story of the Empresses, or
Queens, as they preferred to be called, who occupied the
throne set up by Constantine in New Rome, or ancient
Byzantium, until the victorious Turk thrust it disdainfully
aside to make way for his more spacious harem.
The eastern or Byzantine Empire has long been
regarded in Europe as a world of far less interest than
that which centred on the banks of the Tiber: a world
of monotonous piety and little adventure or spirit, almost
Chinese in its placid and unchanging adherence to traditional
and very conventional forms. One is tempted to
attribute this error, not merely to the longer concealment
of Byzantine antiquities from our fathers and the superior
attractiveness of Italy, but, in some measure, to the
disproportion of Gibbons work. By the time the great
historian has advanced only one or two centuries in the
life of the East he finds that the superb generosity of his
plan has committed him to an unachievable task, and he
begins to compress whole chapters of the most vivid
and adventurous history into a few disdainful pages;
and as Finlay, the proper historian of the Greek civilization,
not only lacks the charm which draws each generavition
with fresh wonder to the volumes of Gibbon, but
shares and expresses the same disdain for his subject,
his work has not tended to redeem the Byzantine Empire
from neglect. Of late years there has been some quickening
of interest in the eastern Empire. Professor Bury
in this country,1 M. Diehl in France, Schlumberger in
Germany, and other historians, have done much to draw
attention to the extraordinary interest and the very lively
character of Byzantine life.
When we confine our attention, as we do in this
volume, to the Court life and the personality of the
imperial women, the interest rises to the pitch of
romance, and is often sustained at that height for many
chapters. Few Courts in the world have, in their
thousand years of history, witnessed so much adventure,
intrigue, comedy and tragedy, as that of the Byzantine
Empresses. From all quarters of the Empire, in the
most varied ways, all sorts of women, from princesses
to village girls, tavern girls or circus girls, make their
way to the bronze-roofed palace and wear for a season
the prodigious jewels and the glittering robes of an
Empress of Constantinople; and, as there is no law or
method of succession to the throne, the rise and fall of
Emperors and Empresses gives a dramatic movement to
the story. The notion that the eastern Empresses are
enwrapped in a rigid piety and formalism, as they are
in their stiff tunics of gold-cloth, is a ludicrous mistake.
Their piety is usually external and superficial, and often
they make not the least pretence of it; while, even whenvii
it is obviously sincere, it is associated with a skill in
casuistry which allows a free play of their ambitions,
their passions, and even their criminal impulses. Indeed,
it is only fair to say at the outset that if a reader passes
from the gallery of the pagan Empresses into that
of the Empresses of Constantinople in the hope of
encountering more restful, more virtuous and more
domestic types of womanhood, he will be grievously
disappointed. We may not find a Messalina among
them, but irregularity of life is more evenly distributed
than among the Roman Empresses, ambition and intrigue
are far more cultivated, and there is a strain
of barbaric cruelty running through the greater part of
the story which it would have been more pleasant, had
it been consistent with truthfulness, to omit. But the
biographer should not be a moralist. My simple purpose
is to depict, as far as it is possible, the very varied types
of womanhood which come into the fierce light that
beats about a throne in that strange world where
Greek and Roman and Syrian blood blend to produce a
new character.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 60938
Author: McCabe, Joseph
Release Date: Dec 16, 2019
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Age of Justinian and Theodora: A History of the Sixth Century A.D., Volume 1 (of 2)

Although the age of Justinian is the most interesting
and important in the whole series of the Byzantine
annals, no comprehensive work has hitherto been devoted to
the subject. His tutors in the art of autocracy were dead or
superannuated, and his present subordinates owed their
elevation to his favour and judgment. The new Emperor
was a man of middle stature, spare rather than stout, and on
the verge of becoming bald and gray. His features were
sufficiently regular, his face was round, his complexion
florid, and he wore neither beard nor moustache.[1] Those
{366}
whom he impressed unfavourably were fond of pointing out
that he bore a striking resemblance to Domitian.[2] He
affected a pleasant demeanour, appeared always with a set
smile,[3] and was so studious of personal popularity that even
the meanest of his subjects might hope for an audience of
his sovereign. With an unbounded belief in his own capacity
for discrimination, he was always ready to listen, but
never to be convinced. His assurance communicated itself
to those with whom he came in contact, and his associates
rarely ventured to dispute his opinions.[4] His mode of life
{367}
tended strongly towards asceticism, and he yielded no indulgence
to his natural appetites. In his diet he restricted
himself to the barest necessaries, he seemed to exist almost
without sleep, and there is no evidence that he was ever attracted
sexually by any woman except Theodora. Without
commanding abilities, his mental activity was incessant, and
he was perpetually busy in every department of the state.[5]
He plunged into politics, law, and theology, with the conviction
that he could master every detail and deal effectively
with all questions which might arise for decision. Yet he
was credulous and lent a willing ear to those who brought
in doubtful reports, which he was generally prone to act
upon without due inquiry as to their authenticity.[6]
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 65717
Author: Holmes, William Gordon
Release Date: Jun 27, 2021
Format: eBook
Language: English

Arethusa: Konstantinopolin orjatar

Carlo Zeno, venetsialainen aatelismies, entinen kirjuri, entinen
peluri, entinen onnenonkija, entinen Patrasin palkkapitjn
maallikkohaltija, entinen kaksintaistelija ja entinen kreikkalainen
kenraali, noin yhdeksnkolmatta vuoden ikinen ja sitkess ruumiissaan
arvet puolestakymmenest haavasta, jotka olisivat tuottaneet kuoleman
tavalliselle miehelle, oli pttnyt knt uuden lehden, ruvennut
tukkukauppiaaksi ja asui Konstantinopolissa vuonna 1376.
Hn oli ostanut talon itse kaupungista, koska genualaiset kauppiaat
asuivat kaikki Peran kaupunginosassa Kultaisen Sarven toisella
puolen.
genualaisen ruoanlaiton haju olivat kaikki yht inhottavia laguunien
rannalla kasvaneelle. Genuaa ei sopinut mainita sivistyneitten
venetsialaiskorvien kuullen, sen pelkk nimikin oli mahdoton
sdyllisten venetsialaishuulten nnettvksi; ja noiden tavujen
lausuminen liikeasioissakin oli kamalan pahaonnista.
Siit syyst Carlo Zeno ja hnen ystvns olivat asettuneet vanhaan
kaupunkiin, kreikkalaisten, bukaralaisten, juutalaisten ja tsherkessien
joukkoon, ja jttneet genualaiset Peraan yksikseen, ollen iknkuin
ei heit olisi ollut olemassakaan. Tt kuvittelua ei tosin aina ollut
helppo pit yll, sill Zenolla oli erittin hyvt silmt eik hn
voinut olla nkemtt noita ihmiskunnan mtmunia Kultaisen Sarven
vastarannalta, istuessaan parvekkeellaan kevtiltoina; ja hnen
ainoana lohtunaan oli haaveilla, kuinka tuhoaisi heit tukuttain,
hakkaisi heit kappaleiksi sadoittain ja tuhansittain ja pinoisi
pyramiideja heidn rumista irvistvist pistn. Mitvarten he
olivat genualaisia? Carlo Zeno olisi kernaammin ottanut korvapuustin
turkkilaiselta Amurad-sulttaanilta, joka asui salmen toisella puolen
Vhss-Aasiassa, kuin kohteliaan sanan vhimmn vastenmieliselt
noista vihoviimeisist genualais-kuvatuksista. "Katsokaa", sanoi
Tertullianus kerran ivallisesti, "kuinka nuo kristityt rakastavat
toisiaan." Asiat eivt olleet parantuneet yhdesstoista vuosisadassa
senjlkeenkuin tuo oppinut kirkon tohtori oli lhtenyt tst elmst,
arvatenkin hellsydmisempn maailmaan.
