Wu Tingfang
shows evidence of having thought through many issues of relevance to
the United States, and while some of his thoughts are rather oddsuch
as his suggestion that the title of President be replaced by the title
of Emperor; and others are unfortunately wrongsuch as his hopes for
peace, written on the eve of the First World War; they are all
well-considered and sometimes show remarkable insight into American
culture.

Even so, it should be remarked that he makes some errors, including
some misunderstandings of American and Western ideas and an
idealization of Chinese culture, and humanity in general, in some
pointswhile I do not wish to refute his claims about China, I would
simply point out that many of the things he praises have been seen
differently by many outside observers, just as Wu Tingfang sometimes
looks critically at things in America which he does not fully
understand (and, unfortunately, he is sometimes all too correct)in
all these cases (on both sides) some leeway must be given to account
for mutual misunderstandings. I had to choose between a
royalist or a republican, a democrat or a conservative, a socialist or a
bonapartist; as I was neither one nor the other, nor even anything, I
often envied those around me who were so fortunate as to have arrived at
definite conclusions. After listening to various doctrines, I acknowledged
that there undoubtedly was something wrong with my head. The motives that
influenced others did not influence me; I could not comprehend how, in
political matters, a man could be governed by preferences. My assertive
countrymen planned a constitution just like a house, according to the
latest, simplest, and most attractive plan; and there were several under
considerationthe mansion of a marquis, the house of a common
citizen, the tenement of a laborer, the barracks of a soldier, the kibbutz
of a socialist, and even the camp of savages. Each claimed that his was
"the true habitation for Man, the only one in which a sensible person
could live." In my opinion, the argument was weak; personal taste could
not be valid for everyone. It seemed to me that a house should not be
built for the architect alone, or for itself, but for the owner who was to
live in it. Referring to the owner for his advice, that is submitting to
the French people the plans of its future habitation, would evidently be
either for show or just to deceive them; since the question, obviously,
was put in such a manner that it provided the answer in advance. Besides,
had the people been allowed to reply in all liberty, their response was in
any case not of much value since France was scarcely more competent than I
was; the combined ignorance of ten millions is not the equivalent of one
man's wisdom. A people may be consulted and, in an extreme case, may
declare what form of government it would like best, but not that which it
most needs. Nothing but experience can determine this; it must have time
to ascertain whether the political structure is convenient, substantial,
able to withstand inclemency, and adapted to customs, habits, occupations,
characters, peculiarities and caprices. For example, the one we have tried
has never satisfied us; we have during eighty years demolished it thirteen
times, each time setting it up anew, and always in vain, for never have we
found one that suited us. If other nations have been more fortunate, or if
various political structures abroad have proved stable and enduring, it is
because these have been erected in a special way. Founded on some
primitive, massive pile, supported by an old central edifice, often
restored but always preserved, gradually enlarged, and, after numerous
trials and additions, they have been adapted to the wants of its
occupants. It is well to admit, perhaps, that there is no other way of
erecting a permanent building. Never has one been put up instantaneously,
after an entirely new design, and according to the measurements of pure
Reason. A sudden contrivance of a new, suitable, and enduring constitution
is an enterprise beyond the forces of the human mind.

In any event, I came to the conclusion that if we should ever discover the
one we need it would not be through some fashionable theory. The point is,
if it exists, to discover it, and not to put it to a vote. To do that
would not only be pretentious it would be useless; history and nature will
do it for us; it is for us to adapt ourselves to them, as it is certain
they will not accommodate themselves to us. The social and political mold,
into which a nation may enter and remain, is not subject to its will, but
determined by its character and its past. It is essential that, even in
its least traits, it should be shaped on the living material to which it
is applied; otherwise it will burst and fall to pieces. Hence, if we
should succeed in finding ours, it will only be through a study of
ourselves, while the more we understand exactly what we are, the more
certainly shall we distinguish what best suits us. We ought, therefore, to
reverse the ordinary methods, and form some conception of the nation
before formulating its constitution. Doubtless the first operation is much
more tedious and difficult than the second. How much time, how much study,
how many observations rectified one by the other, how many researches in
the past and the present, over all the domains of thought and of action,
what manifold and age-long labors before we can obtain an accurate and
complete idea of a great people. A people which has lived a people's age,
and which still lives! But it is the only way to avoid the unsound
construction based on a meaningless planning. I promised myself that, for
my own part, if I should some day undertake to form a political opinion,
it would be only after having studied France.

What is contemporary France? To answer this question we must know how this
France is formed, or, what is still better, to act as spectator at its
formation. At the end of the last century (in 1789), like a molting
insect, it underwent a metamorphosis. Its ancient organization is
dissolved; it tears away its most precious tissues and falls into
convulsions, which seem mortal. Then, after multiplied throes and a
painful lethargy, it re-establishes itself. But its organization is no
longer the same: by silent interior travail a new being is substituted for
the old. In 1808, its leading characteristics are decreed and defined:
departments, arondissements, cantons and communes, no change have since
taken place in its exterior divisions and functions. Concordat, Code,
Tribunals, University, Institute, Prefects, Council of State, Taxes,
Collectors, Cours des Comptes, a uniform and centralized administration,
its principal organs, are still the same. Nobility, commoners, artisans,
peasants, each class has henceforth the position, the sentiments, the
traditions which we see at the present day (1875). Thus the new creature
is at once stable and complete; consequently its structure, its instincts
and its faculties mark in advance the circle within which its thought and
its action will be stimulated. Around it, other nations, some more
advanced, others less developed, all with greater caution, some with
better results, attempt similarly a transformation from a feudal to a
modern state; the process takes place everywhere and all but
simultaneously. But, under this new system as beneath the ancient, the
weak is always the prey of the strong. Woe to those (nations) whose
retarded evolution exposes them to the neighbor suddenly emancipated from
his chrysalis state, and is the first to go forth fully armed! Woe
likewise to him whose too violent and too abrupt evolution has badly
balanced his internal economy. Who, through the exaggeration of his
governing forces, through the deterioration of his deep-seated organs,
through the gradual impoverishment of his vital tissues is condemned to
commit inconsiderate acts, to debility, to impotency, amidst sounder and
better-balanced neighbors! In the organization, which France effected for
herself at the beginning of the (19th) century, all the general lines of
her contemporary history were traced. Her political revolutions, social
Utopias, division of classes, role of the church, conduct of the nobility,
of the middle class, and of the people, the development, the direction, or
deviation of philosophy, of letters and of the arts. That is why, should
we wish to understand our present condition our attention always reverts
to the terrible and fruitful crisis by which the ancient regime produced
the Revolution, and the Revolution the new regime.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2577
Author: Rom, Svend [Annotator]
Release Date: Jun 22, 2008
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Contributor (Author): Taine, Hippolyte, 1828-1893

Translator: Durand, John, 1822-1908

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2577_72d5912e-31b3-4a79-8d5a-c53a51249f4e.jpg?v=1671253678
the-modern-regime-volume-1-gb-2581
The Modern Regime, Volume 1

The Modern Regime, Volume 1

Neither lips nor heart are capable of pronouncing the above invigorating
and conclusive phrase after a silence of 30 years. That local society
ought to be a private association, does not interest those who are
concerned, while the legislator does not permit it. Indeed, after the year
VIII (1799), the State (Napoleon) introduces into the machine the new
motivation described above. After the revolution of 1830,4201
the municipal and general councilors become elective and are appointed by
a limited suffrage; after the revolution of 1848, they are elected by
universal suffrage.4202 After the revolution of
      1870,4203
each municipal council elects its own mayor, while the council-general,
whose powers are enlarged, leaves in its place, during its vacations, a
standing committee who arrange with, and govern along with, the prefect.
Here, in local society, is a superadded internal motor, working from
below, whilst the first one is external and works from above; from now on,
both are to work together and in accord. But, in reality, the second
(the council-general) remains subordinate; moreover, it does not suit the
machine4204 and the machine does not
suit it; it is only a superfluity, an inconvenient and cumbersome
intruder, nearly always useless, and often mischievous. Its influence is
feeble and of little effect; too many brakes are attached to it; its force
diminishes through the complexity of its numerous wheels; it fails in
giving action; it cannot but little more than impede or moderate other
impulses, those of the external motor, sometimes as it should, and
sometimes the contrary. Most frequently, even nowadays (1889), it is of no
efficiency whatever. Three-quarters of the municipal councils, for
three-fourths of their business, hold sessions only to give signatures.
Their pretended deliberations are simply a parade formality; the incentive
and direction continue to come from without, and from above; under the
third Republic, as under the Restoration and the first Empire, it is
always the central State which governs the local society; amid all the
wrangling and disputes, in spite of passing conflicts it is, and remains,
the initiator, mover, leader, controller, accountant, and executor of
every undertaking, the preponderating power in the department as well as
in the commune, and with what deplorable results we all know. There
is still another and more serious result. Nowadays, its interference is an
advantage, for should it renounce its preponderance this would pass over
to the other power which, since this has become vested in a numerical
majority, is mere blind and brutal force; abandoned to itself and without
any counter-weight, its ascendancy would be disastrous, we would see
reappearing along with the blunders of 1789, the outrages, usurpations,
      and distress of 1790, 1791 and 1792.4205In
any event, there is this advantage in despotic centralization, that it
still preserves us from democratic autonomy. In the present state of
institutions and minds, the former system, objectionable as it may be, is
our last retreat against the greater evil of the latter.

In effect, direct universal suffrage, counted by heads, is in local
society a discordant element, a monstrous system, to which it is adverse.
Constituted as this is, not by human judgment, but by the preponderance of
numbers and their force, its mechanism is determined beforehand; it
excludes certain wheels and connections.4206 That
is why the legislator must write laws which reflect the nature of our
existence, or, at least, translate this as closely as he can, without any
gross contradiction. Nature herself presents him with ready-made statutes.4207
His business is to read these properly; he has already transcribed the
apportionment of burdens; he can now transcribe the apportionment of
      rights.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2581
Author: Rom, Svend [Annotator]
Release Date: Jun 22, 2008
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Contributor (Author): Taine, Hippolyte, 1828-1893

Translator: Durand, John, 1822-1908

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2581_dcaffa8c-c545-4ed7-9610-49bb74f46635.jpg?v=1671253687
the-modern-regime-volume-2-gb-2582
The Modern Regime, Volume 2

The Modern Regime, Volume 2

"To treat of the Church, the School, and the Family, describe the modern
milieu and note the facilities and obstacles which a society like our own
encounters in this milieu, such was the program of the last5101
section of the "Origins of Contemporary France." The preceding volume is a
continuation of the first part of this program; after the commune and the
department, after local societies, the author was to study moral and
intellectual bodies in France as organized by Napoleon. This study
completed, this last step taken, he was about to reach the summit. He was
about to view France as a whole, to comprehend it no longer through a
      detail of its organs, in a state of formation, but its actual existence;
no longer isolated, but plunged, along with other occidental nations, into
the modern milieu, experiencing with them the effects of one general cause
which changed the physical and intellectual condition of men; which
dissolved sentiments formerly grouping them together, more or less capable
at length of adapting themselves to new circumstances and of organizing
according to a new type suited to the coming age that now opens before us.

Only a part of this last volume was written, that which relates to the
Church and to public instruction. Death intervened and suddenly arrested
the pen. M. Taine, at this moment, was about completing his analysis of
subordinate societies in France. For those who have followed him
thus far it is already clear that the great defect of the French community
is the fragmentation of the individuals, who isolated, dwindling, and
prostrate at the feet of the all-powerful State, who, due to remote
historical causes, and yet more so by modern legislation, have been made
incapable of "spontaneously grouping around a common interest." Very
probablyand of this we may judge by two sketches of a plan,
undoubtedly provisional, but the ideas of which were long settled in his
mindM. Taine would have first described this legislation and
defined its principles and general characteristics. He meant to show it
more and more systematic, deliberately hostile to collective enterprise,
considering secondary bodies not as "distinct, special organs," endowed
with a life of their own, "maintained and stimulated by private
initiation," but as agents of the State "which fashions them after a
common pattern, imposes on them their form and prescribes their work."This
done, this defect pointed out, the author was to enumerate the
consequences flowing from it, the social body entirely changed, "not only
in its proportions but in its innermost texture," every tendency weakened
by which individuals form groups that are to last longer than themselves,
each man reduced to his own self, the egoistic instinct enhanced while the
social instinct wastes away for want of nourishment, his daily imagination
solely concerned with life-long aims, incapacitated for politics as he is
"lacking spheres of action in which he may train himself according to his
experiences and faculties", his mind weakening in idleness and boredom or
in a thirst for pleasure and personal success,in short, an organic
impoverishment of all faculties of cohesion, leading to the destruction of
the natural centers of grouping and, consequently, to political
      instability.5102

One association of special import remains, the most spontaneous, the
deepest rooted, so old that all others derive from it, so essential that
in any attack upon it we see even the substance of the social body
decaying and diminishing. On the nature of the Family; on its profound
physiological origins; on its necessary role in the prolongation and
"perpetuation of the individual" by affording him "the sole remedy for
death"; on its primitive constitution among men of our own race; on its
historic organization and development "around the family home"; on the
necessity of its subsistence and continuance in order to insure the
duration of this home; on its other needs, M. Taine, with his knowledge of
man and of his history, had given a good deal of thought to fundamental
ideas analogous to those which he has consecrated to the classic spirit,
to the origin of honor and conscience, to the essence of local society, so
many stones, as it were, shaped by him from time to time and deeply
implanted as the foundations of his criticism of institutions. Having set
forth the proper character and permanent wants of the Family he was able
to study the legislation affecting it, and, first, "the Jacobin laws on
marriage, divorce, paternal authority and on the compulsory public
education of children; next, the Napoleonic laws, those which still govern
us, the Civil Code" with that portion of it in which the equality and
leveling spirit is preserved, along with "its tendency to regard property
as a means of enjoyment" instead of the starting-point and support of "an
enduring institution."Having exposed the system, M. Taine meant to
consider its effects, those of surrounding institutions, and to describe
the French family as it now exists. He had first studied the "tendency to
marriage"; he had considered the motives which, in general, weaken or
fortify it, and appreciated those now absent and now active in France.
According to him, "the healthy ideal of every young man is to found a
family, a house of infinite duration, to create and to rule." Why in
modern France does he give his thoughts to "pleasure and of excelling in
his career"? Why does he regard marriage "without enthusiasm, as a last
measure, as a 'settling-down,' and not as a beginning, the commencement of
a veritable career, subordinating all others to it and regarding these,
pecuniary and professional, as auxiliary and as means?"After the
tendency to marriage, "the tendency to paternity." How does the shrunken
family come to live only for itself? In what way, in default of other
interests, homestead, domain, workshop, lasting local undertakings, how
does the heart, now deprived of its food by the lack of invisible
posterity, fall back on affection for visible progeny?5103
In a country where there are few openings, where careers are overcrowded,
what are the effects of this paid idolatry5104,
and, to sum up in one phrase, in what way does the French system of to-day
tend to develop the most fatal of results, the decline in the birth rate?

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2582
Author: Rom, Svend [Annotator]
Release Date: Jun 22, 2008
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Contributor (Author): Taine, Hippolyte, 1828-1893

Translator: Durand, John, 1822-1908

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2582_191d5c29-8632-4545-9b5d-9b48477f0cc6.jpg?v=1671253689
mont-saint-michel-and-chartres-gb-4584
Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres

Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres

This header should be the first thing seen when anyone starts to
view the eBook. This fact is due to the immense difficulty
of perceiving and comprehending what underlies the surface of
Japanese life. No work fully interpreting that life,no work
picturing Japan within and without, historically and socially,
psychologically and ethically, can be written for at least another
fifty years. So vast and intricate the subject that the united labour
of a generation of scholars could not exhaust it, and so difficult
that the number of scholars willing to devote their time to it must
always be small. Even among the Japanese themselves, no scientific
knowledge of their own history is yet possible; because the means of
obtaining that knowledge have not yet been prepared, though
mountains of material have been collected. The want of any good
history upon a modern plan is but one of many discouraging wants.
Data for the study of sociology [2] are still inaccessible to the
Western investigator. Its early struggles simply arrest
the attention, and excite the jealousy, of the neighboring nations. The
citizens of this little state are warriors, and, either for defense or
glory, they subdue one after another the cities of Latium and Etruria,
then the whole of Italy, and finally the old monarchies and empires of
the world. In two hundred and fifty years the citizens have become
nobles, and a great aristocracy is founded, which lasts eight hundred
years. Their aggressive policy and unbounded ambition involve the whole
world in war, which does not cease until all the nations known to the
Greeks acknowledge their sway. Everywhere Roman laws, language, and
institutions spread. A vast empire arises, larger than the Assyrian and
the Macedonian combined,a universal empire,a great wonder and
mystery, having all the grandeur of a providential event. It becomes too
great to be governed by an oligarchy of nobles. Civil wars create an
imperator, who, uniting in himself all the great offices of state, and
sustained by the conquering legions, rules from East to West and from
North to South, with absolute and undivided sovereignty. The Caesars
reach the summit of human greatness and power, and the city of Romulus
becomes the haughty mistress of the world. The emperor is worshiped as a
deity, and the proud metropolis calls herself eternal. An empire is
established by force of arms and by a uniform policy, such as this world
has not seen before or since.
Early Roman history is chiefly the detail of successful wars, aggressive
and uncompromising, in which we see a fierce and selfish patriotism, an
indomitable will, a hard unpitying temper, great practical sagacity,
patience, and perseverance, superiority to adverse fortune, faith in
national destinies, heroic sentiments, and grand ambition. We see a
nation of citizen soldiers, an iron race of conquerors, bent on
conquest, on glory, on self-exaltation, attaching but little value to
the individual man, but exalting the integrity and unity of the state.
We see no fitful policy, no abandonment to the enjoyment of the fruits
of victory, no rest, no repose, no love of art or literature, but an
unbounded passion for domination. The Romans toiled, and suffered, and
died, never wearied, never discouraged, never satisfied, until their
mission was accomplished and the world lay bleeding and prostrate at
their feet.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 6839
Author: Lord, John
Release Date: Nov 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Mind in the Making: The Relation of Intelligence to Social Reform

Author of "PETRARCH, THE FIRST MODERN SCHOLAR"
            "MEDIAEVAL AND MODERN TIMES"
            "THE NEW HISTORY", ETC.
       *       *       *       *       *
This is an essaynot a treatiseon the most important of all matters
of human concern. Hence there came to us
the thought of placing on record, in an accessible, comprehensive, and
permanent form, an outline of the whole range of Irish achievement
during the last two thousand years.
In undertaking this task we had a twofold motive. In the first
place, we wished to give to people of Irish birth or descent
substantial reason for that pride of race which we know is in them, by
placing in their hands an authoritative and unassailable array of
facts as telling as any nation in the world can show. The style adopted has therefore been the
opposite of the pedantic, utilizing any vivacities of method which are
consistent with truth of fact." The same principles have guided me in
the present equally unpretentious treatise. I agree entirely with Mr.
Warde Fowler when he says: "I firmly believe that the one great hope
for classical learning and education lies in the interest which the
unlearned public may be brought to feel in ancient life and thought."
For the general reader there is perhaps no period in the history of
the ancient world which is more interesting than the one here chosen.
Yet, so far as I know, there exists no sufficiently popular work
dealing with this period alone and presenting in moderate compass a
clear general view of the matters of most moment. My endeavour has
been to represent as faithfully as possible the Age of Nero, and
nowhere in the book is it implied that what is true for that age is
necessarily as true for any other. The reader who is not a special
student of history or antiquities is perhaps as often confused by
descriptions of ancient life which cover too many generations as by
thoseoften otherwise excellentwhich include too much detail.
I have necessarily consulted not only the Latin and Greek writers who
throw light upon the time, but also all the best-known Standard works
of modern date. It is perhaps scarcely necessary to state that in
matters of contemporary government, administration, and public life my
guides have been chiefly Mommsen, Arnold, and Greenidge; for social
life Marquardt, Friedlnder, and Becker-Gll; for topography and
buildings Jordan, Hlsen, Lanciani, and Middleton; nor that the
Dictionaries of Smith and of Daremberg and Saglio have been always at
hand, as well as Baumeister's Denkmler, and Guhl and Koner's Life
of the Greeks and Romans. The admirable Pompeii of Mau-Kelsey has
been, of course, indispensable. I have also derived profit from the
writings of Prof. Sir W. M. Ramsay in connexion with St. Paul, and
from Conybeare and Howson's Life and Epistles of the Apostle. Useful
hints have been found in Mr. Warde Fowler's Social Life in Rome in
the Age of Cicero, and in Prof. Dill's Roman_ Society from Nero to
Marcus Aurelius_. A personal study of ancient sites, monuments, and
objects of antiquity at Rome, Pompeii, and elsewhere has naturally
been of prime value. Those intimately acquainted with the immense
amount of the available material will best realize the difficulty
there has been in deciding how much to say and how much to "leave in
the inkstand."
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 12875
Author: Tucker, T. Streaks of color across a mangled
landscape: the gentle concealment of shell hole and trench. This is what
one saw, even in the summer of 1919. For the sap was running, and a new
invasion was occurring. Legions of tender blades pushed over the haggard
No Man's Land, while reckless poppies scattered through the ranks of
green, to be followed by the shyer starry sisters in blue and white.
Irrepressibly these floral throngs advanced over the shell torn spaces,
crowding, mingling and bending together in a rainbow riot beneath the
winds that blew them. They were the vanguard.
In the midst of the reviving fields lay Noyon: Noyon, that gem of the
Oise, whose delicate outline of spires and soft tinted roofs had graced
the wide valley for centuries. Today the little city lay blanched and
shapeless between the hills, as all towns were left that stood in the
path of the armies. The cathedral alone reared its battered bulk in the
midst; a resisting pile, its two grim and blunted towers frowning into
the sky. Nobly Gothic through all the shattering, the great church rose
out of the wreckage, with flying buttresses still outspread like
brooding wings to the dead houses that had sunk about her.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 13048
Author: Shortall, Katherine
Release Date: Jul 29, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

    Raspail,
    Courbet,
    Victor Manuel,
    Jos de Alencar,
    Augusto Soromenho.A
    senhora portuense e as Farpas.
    O libello d'aquella dama.
    A nossa resposta. Of these
essays only one, "The Precursors", had been written out in full
before she died; and it has now been added to the present edition.
In its published form it is not in every respect identical with the
author's original text.
The essay was taking shape as Munich came and went and as the
war itself was drawing near. No historian writing at that time
about Rome menaced by the barbarians--and least of all an historian
as sensitive to the extra-mural world as Eileen Power was--could
have helped noting the similarities between the Roman Empire in the
fifth or sixth centuries and Europe in the nineteen-thirties. In
the end, having finished the essay, she decided to withold it from
publication for the time being and to present it instead to a
friendly audience as a tract for the times. This she did at a
meeting of the Cambridge History Club in the winter of 1938: and
for that occasion she replaced the opening and concluding pages of
the original essay with passages, or rather notes for passages,
more suited to the purpose.
I am sure that she never intended these passages to be
perpetuated in her Medieval People and I have therefore done
what I could to replace them with a reconstructed version of her
first draft. The reconstruction had to be done from somewhat
disjointed notes and cannot therefore be word-faithful. The readers
must therefore bear in mind that the first two and the last page of
the essay are mere approximations to what Eileen Power in fact
wrote.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 13144
Author: Power, Eileen
Release Date: Aug 9, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

    politicaA moralA
Herbert Spencer, Wechniakoff, Auguste Comte, Michel Chevalier, e
    Baixa.Secularisao do jesuitismo
    na pessa do mesmo MarquezA
estatua de Sebastio e o monumento do Terreiro do PaoParallelo do
cavallo e do cavalleiroPede-se
o esquecimento para um e uma charrua para o outro.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 13630
Author: Ortigão, Ramalho
Release Date: Oct 6, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: Portuguese

Contributors

Editor: Ortigão, Ramalho, 1836-1915 , Queirós, Eça de, 1845-1900

Evolution Of The Japanese, Social And Psychic

The tragedy enacted in China during the closing year of the
nineteenth century marks an epoch in the history of China and
of the world. Two world-views, two types of civilization met in
deadly conflict, and the inherent weakness of isolated,
belated, superstitious and corrupt paganism was revealed.
Moreover, during this, China's crisis, Japan for the first time
stepped out upon the world's stage of political and military
activity. She was recognized as a civilized nation, worthy to
share with the great nations of the earth the responsibility of
ruling the lawless and backward races.
The correctness of any interpretation as to the significance
of this conflict between the opposing civilizations turns,
ultimately, on the question as to what is the real nature of
man and of society. If it be true, as maintained by Prof. Le
Bon and his school, that the mental and moral character of a
people is as fixed as its physiological characteristics, then
the conflict in China is at bottom a conflict of races, not of
    civilizations.
The inadequacy of the physiological theory of national
character may be seen almost at a glance by a look at Japan.
Were an Oriental necessarily and unchangeably Oriental, it
would have been impossible for Japan to have come into such
close and sympathetic touch with the West.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 13831
Author: Gulick, Sidney Lewis
Release Date: Oct 22, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Problem of China

The Ruler of the Southern Ocean was Sh (Heedless), the Ruler of
the Northern Ocean was H (Sudden), and the Ruler of the Centre
was Chaos. Russian problems, it is true, have important
affinities with those of China, but they have also important
differences; moreover they are decidedly less complex. Chinese problems,
even if they affected no one outside China, would be of vast importance,
since the Chinese are estimated to constitute about a quarter of the
human race. In fact, however, all the world will be vitally affected by
the development of Chinese affairs, which may well prove a decisive
factor, for good or evil, during the next two centuries. This makes it
important, to Europe and America almost as much as to Asia, that there
should be an intelligent understanding of the questions raised by China,
even if, as yet, definite answers are difficult to give.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 13940
Author: Russell, Bertrand
Release Date: Nov 3, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

New Ideas in India During the Nineteenth Century - A Study of Social, Political, and Religious Developments

The substance of the following volume was delivered in the form of
lectures in the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh during Session
1904-5. As "Alexander Robertson" lecturer in the University of Glasgow,
the writer dealt with the new religious ideas that have been impressing
themselves upon India during the British period of her history. As
"Gunning" lecturer in the University of Edinburgh, the writer dwelt more
upon the new social and political ideas. The popular belief of Hindu India
is, that there are no new ideas in India, that nought in India suffers
change, and that as things are, so they have always been. Even educated
Indians are reluctant to admit that things have changed and that their
community has had to submit to education and improvementthat
suttee, for example, was ever an honoured institution in the province now
most advanced. But to the observant student of the Indian people, the
evolution of India is almost as noteworthy as the more apparent
rigidity. There is a flowering plant common in Northern India, and chiefly
notable for the marvel of bearing flowers of different colours upon the
same root. The Hindus call it "the sport of Krishna"; Mahomedans, "the
flower of Abbas"; for the plant is now incorporate with both the great
religions of India, and even with their far-back beginnings. Yet it is a
comparatively recent importation into India; it is only the flower known
in Britain as "the marvel of Peru," and cannot have been introduced into
India more than three hundred years ago. It was then that the Portuguese
of India and the Spaniards of Peru were first in touch within the home
lands in Europe. In our own day may be seen the potato and the cauliflower
from Europe establishing themselves upon the dietary of Hindus in defiance
of the punctiliously orthodox. fortioristrange that
we should reason thus from the trifling to the fundamental, yet not
strange to the Anglo-Indian and the Indian,
fortiori, we shall not be surprised to find novel and alien ideas
taking root in Indian soil.
Seeds, we are told, may be transported to a new soil, either wind-borne
or water-borne, carried in the stomachs of birds, or clinging by their
burs to the fur of animals. In the cocoa-nut, botanists point out, the
cocoa-nut palms possess a most serviceable ark wherein the seed may be
floated in safety over the sea to other shores. It is thus that the
cocoa-nut palm is one of the first of the larger plants to show themselves
upon a new coral reef or a bare volcano-born island. Into India itself, it
is declared, the cocoa-nut tree has thus come over-sea, nor is yet found
growing freely much farther than seventy miles from the shore. One of the
chief interests of the subject before us is that the seeds of the new
ideas in India during the past century are so clearly water-borne. They
are the outcome of British influence, direct or indirect.
Here are true test and evidence of the character of British influence
and effort, if we can distil from modern India some of the new ideas
prevailing, particularly in the new middle class. Where shall we find
evidence reliable of what British influence has been? Government Reports,
largely statistical, of "The Moral and Material Progress of India," are so
far serviceable, but only as crude material from which the answer
is to be distilled. Members of the Indian Civil Service, and others
belonging to the British Government of India, may volunteer as expert
witnesses regarding British influence, but they are interested parties;
they really stand with others at the bar. The testimony of the missionary
is not infrequently heard, less exactly informed, perhaps, than the Civil
Servant's, but more sympathetic, and affording better testimony where
personal acquaintance with the life of the people is needed. But of him
too, like the Civil Servant, there is some suspicion that in one sphere he
holds a brief. This, indeed, may be said in favour of the missionary's
testimony, that while the Anglo-Indian identifies the missionary's
standpoint with that of the native, the native identifies him with the
Anglo-Indian, so that probably enough he occupies the mean of impartiality
and truth. The British merchant in India may also offer as evidence, and
indeed is "on the spot," and apparently qualified by reason of his
independence. But the interest of his class is professedly limited to
India's material progress; and of his general views, we recall what
Chaucer said of the politics of his "merchant,"
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 14294
Author: Morrison, John
Release Date: Dec 7, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

Congressos catholicos e ideias clericaesAnjos e reprobosAs
influencias e eclesiasticas na sociedade portuguezaA egreja e as
mulheresOs nossos padres, padre de misses, padre d'aldeia e padre de
salaOs clubs e as sacristiasO jogo, a batota, o rei dos lusos e o
rei de copas, a rusga, a
vaccaDoutor Jardim, sabio, e Rosalia, dama
illustreNovas applicaes da mobilia critica litterariaA moderna
    arte portugueza e as
    SantidadeA urna e a
corveta StephaniaOs commendadores e os ces de
    faiana-Milagrosa reappario de
Nossa Senhora Apparecida.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 14296
Author: Ortigão, Ramalho
Release Date: Nov 26, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: Portuguese

Contributors

As idas no parlamento e a immobilidade egypcia. The general purpose of the course will be apparent from the
essays themselves. No forced or mechanical uniformity of view was aimed
at. The writers will be found, very naturally and properly, to differ in
detail and in the stress they lay on different aspects of the case. But
they agree in thinking that while our country's cause and the cause of
our Allies is just and necessary and must be prosecuted with the utmost
vigour, it is not inopportune to reflect on those common and
ineradicable elements in the civilization of the West which tend to form
a real commonwealth of nations and will survive even the most shattering
of conflicts. That we on the Allied side stand fundamentally for this
ideal is one of our most valuable assets.
The fact that the lectures were delivered at a settlement for training
persons for social work in a religious spirit, suggested to more than
one of those who took part in the course, how similar is the task which
now lies before us in international affairs to that which Canon Barnett
initiated thirty years ago for the treatment of the social question at
home. We need in both cases to associate ourselves mentally with others
in order to realize the common elements which underlie the seeming
diversity in the civilization of the West.
The method of the course was primarily historical, though certain essays
have been added of a more idealist type. It is hoped that the point of
view suggested, though prompted by current events, may be found to have
some permanent value. It could obviously be applied to many other
aspects of European life, e.g. morality and politics, to which
conditions of space have only permitted indirect reference to be made in
this volume.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 15030
Author: Marvin, Francis Sydney
Release Date: Feb 12, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Marvin, Francis Sydney, 1863-1943

Recent Developments in European Thought

This volume, like its two predecessors, arises from a course of lectures
delivered at a Summer School at Woodbrooke, near Birmingham, in August,
1919. The first, in 1915, dealt with 'The Unity of Western Civilization'
generally, the second, in 1916, with 'Progress'. In this book an attempt
has been made to trace the same ideas in the last period of European
history, broadly speaking since 1870.
It was felt at the conclusion of the course that the point of view was
so enlightening and offered so many opportunities of useful further
study that it should, if possible, be resumed in future years. A large
number of subjects were suggested'The Relations of East and West,'
'The Duty of Advanced to Backward Peoples,' 'The Rle of Science in
Civilization,' &c.all containing the same elements of 'progress in
unity' which have inspired the previous volumes. It was thought that
possibly for the next session 'World Reconstructions Past and Present'
might be most appropriate.
If any reader feels moved by interest or sympathy with the general idea
to send suggestions, either as to possible places of meeting, or topics
for treatment or any other kindred matter, they would be welcomed either
by the Editor or by Edwin Gilbert, Woodbrooke, Selly Oak, Birmingham.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 15084
Author: Marvin, Francis Sydney
Release Date: Feb 16, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Marvin, Francis Sydney, 1863-1943

Kansallista itsetutkistelua: Suomalaisia kulttuuri-ääriviivoja

Tten lasken julkisuuteen teoksen, jonka alkuainekset
jo ehk pari vuosikymment ovat kehilleet
mielessni. De blik is bij het schrijven van dit boek gericht
geweest als in de diepten van een avondhemel, maar van een hemel vol
bloedig rood, zwaar en woest van dreigend loodgrijs, vol valschen
koperen schijn.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 16829
Author: Huizinga, Johan
Release Date: Oct 8, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: Dutch

History of Egypt, Chaldæa, Syria, Babylonia, and Assyria, Volume 2 (of 12)

The cemeteries of Gizeh and Saqqra: the Great Sphinx; the mastabas,
their chapel and its decoration, the statues of the double, the sepulchral
vaultImportance of the wall-paintings and texts of the mastabas in
determining the history of the Memphite dynasties.

The king and the royal familyDouble nature and titles of the
sovereign: his Horus-names, and the progressive formation of the Pharaonic
ProtocolRoyal etiquette an actual divine worship; the insignia and
prophetic statues of Pharaoh, Pharaoh the mediator between the gods and
his subjectsPharaoh in family life; his amusements, his
occupations, his caresHis harem: the women, the queen, her origin,
      her duties to the kingHis children: their position in the State;
      rivalry among them during the old age and at the death of their father;
succession to the throne, consequent revolutions.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 17322
Author: Maspero, G. In the time
when the gods were not created, not one as yet, when they had neither been
called by their names, nor had their destinies been assigned to them by
fate, gods manifested themselves. Lakhmu and Lakhamu were the first to
appear, and waxed great for ages; then Anshar and Kishar were produced
after them. Days were added to days, and years were heaped upon years:
Anu, Inlil, and Ea were born in their turn, for Anshar and Kishar had
given them birth. As the generations emanated one from the other, their
vitality increased, and the personality of each became more clearly
defined; the last generation included none but beings of an original
character and clearly marked individuality. Anu, the sunlit sky by day,
the starlit firmament by night; Inlil-Bel, the king of the earth; Ea, the
sovereign of the waters and the personification of wisdom.*** Each of them
duplicated himself, Anu into Anat, Bel into Belit, Ea into Damkina, and
united himself to the spouse whom he had deduced from himself. Other
divinities sprang from these fruitful pairs, and the impulse once given,
the world was rapidly peopled by their descendants. Sin, Shamash, and
Kamman, who presided respectively over the moon, the sun, and the air,
were all three of equal rank; next came the lords of the planets, Ninib,
Merodach, Nergal, the warrior-goddess Ishtar, and Nebo; then a whole army
of lesser deities, who ranged themselves around Anu as round a supreme
master. Timat, finding her domain becoming more and more restricted owing
to the activity of the others, desired to raise battalion against
battalion, and set herself to create unceasingly; but her offspring, made
in her own image, appeared like those incongruous phantoms which men see
in dreams, and which are made up of members borrowed from a score of
different animals. They appeared in the form of bulls with human heads, of
horses with the snouts of dogs, of dogs with quadruple bodies springing
from a single fish-like tail. Some of them had the beak of an eagle or a
hawk; others, four wings and two faces; others, the legs and horns of a
goat; others, again, the hind quarters of a horse and the whole body of a
man. Timat furnished them with terrible weapons, placed them under the
command of her husband Kingu, and set out to war against the gods.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 17323
Author: Maspero, G.
