A
Prefatory introduction to a work like this, can hope little better usage
from the Public than they had; it proclaims the approach of what has
often passed by before, adorned most certainly with greater splendour,
perhaps conducted too with greater regularity and skill: Yet will I not
despair of giving at least a momentary amusement to my countrymen in
general, while their entertainment shall serve as a vehicle for
conveying expressions of particular kindness to those foreign
individuals, whose tenderness softened the sorrows of absence, and who
eagerly endeavoured by unmerited attentions to supply the loss of their
company on whom nature and habit had given me stronger claims.
That I should make some reflections, or write down some observations, in
the course of a long journey, is not strange; that I should present them
before the Public is I hope not too daring: the presumption grew up out
of their acknowledged favour, and if too kind culture has encouraged a
coarse plant till it runs to seed, a little coldness from the same
quarter will soon prove sufficient to kill it. The flattering partiality
of private partisans sometimes induces authors to venture forth, and
stand a public decision; but it is often found to betray them too; not
to be tossed by waves of perpetual contention, but rather to sink in the
silence of total neglect. What wonder! He who swims in oil must be
buoyant indeed, if he escapes falling certainly, though gently, to the
bottom; while he who commits his safety to the bosom of the
wide-embracing ocean, is sure to be strongly supported, or at worst
thrown upon the shore.
On this principle it has been still my study to obtain from a humane and
generous Public that shelter their protection best affords from the
poisoned arrows of private malignity; for though it is not difficult to
despise the attempts of petty malice, I will not say with the
Philosopher, that I mean to build a monument to my fame with the stones
thrown at me to break my bones; nor yet pretend to the art of Swift's
German Wonder-doer, who promised to make them fall about his head like
so many pillows. Ink, as it resembles Styx in its colour, should
resemble it a little in its operation too; whoever has been once dipt
should become invulnerable: But it is not so; the irritability of
authors has long been enrolled among the comforts of ill-nature, and the
triumphs of stupidity; such let it long remain! Let me at least take
care in the worst storms that may arise in public or in private life, to
say with Lear,
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 16445
Author: Piozzi, Hester Lynch
Release Date: Aug 5, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

In the evening my son Alexander, my son-in-law and
Pauline gave us some music. They sang vaudevilles and
mimicked characters with a vivacity which delighted me, as I
am always afraid that they may be bored here, though I admit
that their frame of mind was in complete contrast to my own.
On the stroke of midnight punch was served; some tears fell
into my glass when I thought of those with whom I had so
often spent this anniversary.
Rochecotte, January 2, 1841.M. de Salvandy writes to
me as follows concerning the reception of M. Mol at the
Academy: "M. Mol spoke to a magnificent audience. He
was seated between M. de Royer Collard and M. de Chateaubriand;
on this occasion the latter broke his usual custom
of avoiding public appearances. It was a special honour,
either to M. Mol or to the memory of the late archbishop.
The highest society from the Faubourg Saint Germain were
there, in fact all the special friends of M. Mol and everybody
who can be called anybody nowadays. M. Mol was
continually applauded, and his cleverness, his taste and
courageous speaking well deserved this reward. He gave a
2
fair and respectful account of this pure and noble character
and spoke of M. de Qulen without concessions or reticence
or consideration for his own position. His ambition seems
to have burnt its boats, with such enthusiasm did he speak of
old time manners and society and so warmly did he emphasise
the ideas and principles of good order. He only touched
upon present times to utter a eulogy upon the King, and
you know that present times are not agreeable to him. I
was especially struck by the vigorous approval of the audience;
it was a public rehabilitation of the persecuted Prelate and
the canonisation of his memory by a layman before a public
which was not entirely sympathetic or legitimist; for there
was a lively manifestation of approval at certain passages in
Dupin's reply, opposing the Restoration and the Englishman.
Dupin's answer was quite characteristic, and I need say no
more of it. M. Guizot and M. Thiers seem to have foreseen
the success of M. Mol, for they did not appear and their
absence was widely commented upon. In short, this session
has greatly raised M. Mol in the opinion and esteem of
right-minded people, but it has been in particular a great day
for the memory of the Archbishop, for his family and his
friends, and for those who felt his blessing as he was at the
point of death. For this reason I hasten, Madame, to give
you an account of it, as by this means I can realise its
meaning more exactly and more deeply than if I had merely
listened.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 48076
Author: Dino, Dorothée
Release Date: Jan 25, 2015
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

beaucoup M. In the number, the count de la Marche was ordered into the
Orleanois, to subject it to the king's obedience, in company with the
lord de Hambre.[Pg 2]
Aym de Vitry, Fierbourd, and others were sent against the duke of
Bourbon, who had done much mischief to the country of Charolois; and
having a large force with them, they despoiled the Bourbonois and
Beaujolois. They advanced with displayed banners before the town of
Villefranche, in which was the duke of Bourbon and his bastard-brother,
sir Hector, a very valiant knight and renowned in war. There was with
them a large company of knights and esquires, vassals to the duke, who,
seeing the enemy thus boldly advancing, drew up in handsome array and
sallied forth to meet them, and the duke himself joined them in their
intent to offer battle. A severe skirmish ensued, in which many gallant
deeds were done on each side. The bastard of Bourbon distinguished
himself much in the command of the light troops, and fought most
chivalrously. He was, however, so far intermixed with the enemy that
the duke was fearful of his being slain or taken, and, sticking spurs
into his horse, cried out to his people, 'Push forward! for my brother
will be made prisoner unless speedily succoured.' Great part of his
battalion followed him on the gallop toward the enemy,[Pg 3] and the battle
was renewed with more energy: many men at arms were unhorsed, wounded
and slain: at length, the van of the Burgundians, under the command
of Aym de Vitry, was forced to fall back on the main army, which was
at a short distance off. We read of campaigns
that his mind has traced out, of battles which his plans
have won; and we forget, in our admiration of his skill and
power, those by whom the heroic deeds were done, the victory
gained. Generals, says one author, often calculate upon
men as though they were blocks of wood, or movable machines.
Yet every one of these nameless soldiers has feelings
as acutely alive to suffering and to honor as those who
look upon them thus.
It is well sometimes to turn away from the glare and tinsel
of rank, from the glitter of arms and the pageantry of war, to
follow the common soldier in his partings and wanderings, to
cast the glance of pity upon his sufferings, and allow the
heart to be moved with compassion while regarding the temptations
which must ever beset his path. It is only thus that
a true knowledge of the evils and miseries of war can be
obtained; and only when this knowledge is spread far and[IV]
wide, that we may hope to see the banner of peace unfurled,
and the olive-branch waving in quiet, where now the sword
spreads its desolation, and the vulture feasts on the unburied
dead.
Thoughts like these may, perhaps, lend interest to the unpretending
narrative of one who now presents himself and the
scenes of his times before an indulgent public, with none of the
advantages of rank, or birth, or fame, to recommend him to
its notice. The questions which occupied the attention
of the French and the British governments at that
period have now passed into the domain of history.
The resentment evoked by the Egyptian crisis of 1840
and the controversies raised by the Spanish marriages
has died away. The attitude towards the Liberal
and national movements in Europe, adopted, on the
one side, by Louis Philippe and M. Guizot and, on
the other, by Lord Palmerston, can, at this distance
of time, be reviewed dispassionately. In the light of
the knowledge of to-day, the difficulties which beset
the Citizen King may be estimated, and the injustice
of many of the attacks made upon the policy
    of Palmerston can be demonstrated.
Researches in the diplomatic correspondence of the
period, both in London and in Paris, have enabled
me to place in print, for the first time, many documents
bearing upon the part played by Talleyrand in
the Belgian question and upon the secret policy of
Louis Philippe in the same affair.

It is bounded on the
north by Syria and the river Euphrates, on the east by the
Persian Gulf, on the south by the Indian Ocean, on the
west by the Red Sea, or Arabian Gulf. Including the
north-eastern desert, it occupies an area ten times the extent
of that of Great Britain and Ireland. The connecting link
between Asia and Africa, to which latter continent it is
joined by the Isthmus of Suez, it presents in its natural
features, a faithful copy of its colossal tropical neighbour,
modified, however, by the imprint of a strongly marked
individual character, the result of its peculiar isolated position.
The attempted derivation of the name of the country
from Eber[1], the common progenitor of the Joctanites and
Ismaelitesthe two races which are assumed to constitute
the great bulk of the native population of Arabiais, at the
best, but very problematical; that from the word Araba, the[2]
name of a district of the province of Tehama, and which
signifies a level desert, would seem to rest on a safer and
more rational foundation, the far greater part of the country
being indeed a dreary waste, a boundless level of sand,
destitute of rivers, intersected by naked mountains, and
barely relieved here and there by a shady grove or a green
sward of aromatic herbs. The date-palm is often the
solitary representative of vegetable life in these sterile tracts,
which are scorched by a tropical sun, and hardly ever refreshed
by a grateful shower. There are, however, some more
favored districts, where the fertile soil produces dates and
other palms, tamarinds, vines, rice, sugar, figs, tobacco,
indigo, cotton, durra,[2] coffee, gum, benzoin, frankincense,
manna, balsam, aloe, myrrh, spices, &c. The high lands in
the south-west, that border on the Indian Ocean, are
distinguished in this respect, above all other parts of
Arabia, by a more temperate air, superior fertility, and comparative
abundance of wood and water. No wonder, then,
that the appellation happy, bestowed upon this blessed
region by Ptolemy, should have been generally adopted,
although originating in a mistranslation of the word Yemen,
the Arabian name of this part of the peninsula, and which
does not signify happy, but is simply meant to designate the
land lying, with respect to the East, to the right of Mecca,
just as Al-Sham (Syria) means the land to the left of that
city. Ptolemys division of the country into the sandy, the
petraie, and the happy (Arabia Deserta, Petra, and Felix),
is, however, unknown to the Arabians themselves, who speak
only of high land and low land. The epithet stony, so
generally applied by geographers to the petraic division, is
founded in error: Ptolemy derived the word from Petra,
the name of the then flourishing capital of the Nabathans,
and not from the Greek word petra, a rock or stone.
Ptolemys Arabia Petra forms now part of the province of
Hejaz, along the coast of the Red Sea. Yemen, as we
have seen, occupies the south-western coast. On the south-eastern
coast lies the maritime district of Oman; on the[3]
Persian Gulf, the district of Lahsa: the inland space bears
the name of Neged, or Naged.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 63390
Author: Strauss, G. Although he afterwards made another entry, as shall be more
fully detailed, he, however, showed himself this day the true king and
potent[Pg 2] lord of Naples, and went thence to the castle of Capua.
As some of the partisans of king Alphonso still held the citadel of
Naples, the Castel Nuovo, and the Castel del Ovo, king Charles ordered
them to be instantly attacked, although one side of the citadel was
washed by the sea. But just as importantly, these women's lives revealed the power of the Club itself, and the way that having a safe home for single women of ambition allowed them to grow as teachers, artists, suffragists, and people.

For readers interested in women's lives as captured in books like The Barbizon, art history buffs who loved Ninth Street Women, and armchair travelers longing to visit Belle Époque Paris, The Club is a captivating, colorful new history.

Author: Jennifer Dasal
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
Published: 07/15/2025
Pages: 336
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.27lbs
Size: 9.41h x 6.42w x 1.18d
ISBN: 9781639731305

Review Citation(s):
Library Journal 04/01/2025 pg. 99
Kirkus Reviews 04/15/2025
Publishers Weekly 05/05/2025
Shelf Awareness 07/12/2025
Booklist 07/01/2025 pg. 11

About the Author
Jennifer Dasal is the creator and host of the ArtCurious podcast, which has been featured in multiple local and national publications and websites, including O, the Oprah Magazine, PC Magazine, ArtDaily, NPR, Salon and more. Édouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, and Edgar Degas were trapped in Paris during the siege and deeply enmeshed in its politics. Others, including Pierre-August Renoir and Frédéric Bazille, joined regiments outside of the capital, while Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro fled the country just in time. In the aftermath, these artists developed a newfound sense of the fragility of life. The voice we recognize as the author's continually dissolves and re-emerges. Ernaux makes the passage of time palpable. A new kind of autobiography emerges, at once subjective and impersonal, private and collective.

On its 2008 publication in France, The Years came as a surprise. Though Ernaux had for years been hailed as a beloved, bestselling and award-winning author, The Years was in many ways a departure: both an intimate memoir "written" by entire generations, and a story of generations telling a very personal story. Like the generation before hers, the narrator eschews the "I" for the "we" (or "they", or "one") as if collective life were inextricably intertwined with a private life that in her parents' generation ceased to exist. She writes of her parents' generation (and could be writing of her own book): "From a common fund of hunger and fear, everything was told in the "we" and impersonal pronouns."

Co-winner of the 2018 French-American Foundation Translation Prize in Nonfiction
Winner of the 2017 Marguerite Yourcenar Prize for her entire body of work
Winner of the 2016 Strega European Prize

Author: Annie Ernaux
Publisher: Seven Stories Press
Published: 11/21/2017
Pages: 240
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.60lbs
Size: 8.20h x 5.50w x 0.80d
ISBN: 9781609807870

Award: Man Booker International Prize - Nominee

About the Author
Born in 1940, ANNIE ERNAUX grew up in Normandy, studied at Rouen University, and later taught high school. Where prior thinkers sketched out a deterministic, predictable universe, he asserted the transformative power of consciousness and creativity. An international celebrity, he made headlines around the world debating luminaries like Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein about free will and time. The vision of creative evolution and freedom he presented was so disruptive that the New York Times branded him "the most dangerous man in the world."

In Herald of a Restless World, Emily Herring recovers how Bergson captivated a society in flux. She shows how his celebration of the time-bending uniqueness of individual experience struck a chord with those shaken by modern technological and social change. Long after he faded from public view, his insights into memory, time, laughter, and creativity continue to shape how we see the world around us.

Herald of a Restless World is an electrifying portrait of a singular intellect.
