Franz, the elder, was born in
1711, the son of an Austrian general; and Frederick, whose
adventures are here told, was the son of a Prussian
major-general. Franz, at the age of seventeen, fought
duels, and cut off the head of a man who refused to lend him
money. He stood six feet three inches in his shoes, knocked
down his commanding officer, was put under arrest, offered to pay
for his release by bringing in three Turks heads within an
hour, was released on that condition, and actually brought in
four Turks heads. When afterwards cashiered, he
settled on his estates in Croatia, and drilled a thousand of his
tenantry to act as Pandours against the
banditti. In 1740, he served with his Pandours under Maria
Theresa, and behaved himself as one of the more brutal sort of
banditti. He offered to capture Frederick of Prussia, and
did capture his tent. Many more of his adventures are
vaingloriously recounted by himself in the Mmoires du
Baron Franz de Trenck, published at Paris in 1787. This
Trenck took poison when imprisoned at Grtz, and died in
October, 1747, at the age of thirty-six.
His cousin Frederick is the Trenck who here tells a story of
himself that abounds in lively illustration of the days of
Frederick the Great. He professes that Frederick the King
owed him a grudge, because Frederick the Trenck had, when
eighteen years old, fascinated the Princess Amalie at a
ball. But as Frederick the Greater was in correspondence
with his cousin Franz at the time when that redoubtable personage
was planning the seizure of Frederick the Great, there may have
been better ground for the Trencks arrest than he allows
us to imagine. Mr. Carlyle shows that Frederick von der
Trenck had been three months in prison, and was still in prison,
at the time of the battle of the Sohr, in which he professes to
have been engaged. Frederick von der Trenck, after his
release from imprisonment in 1763, married a burgomasters
daughter, and went into business as a wine merchant. Then
he became adventurous again. His adventures, published in
German in 1786-7, and in his own French version in 1788, formed
one of the most popular books of its time. Seven plays were
founded on them, and ladies in Paris wore their bonnets
la Trenck. But the French finally guillotined the author,
when within a year of threescore and ten, on the 26th of July,
1794. He had gone to Paris in 1792, and joined there in the
strife of parties. At the guillotine he struggled with the
executioner.
H.M.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2668
Author: Trenck, Friedrich
Release Date: Jun 1, 2001
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Morley, Henry, 1822-1894

Translator: Holcroft, Thomas, 1745-1809

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2668_bbbf6345-72f7-4b08-b53b-e66694298dba.jpg?v=1671253910
the-life-and-adventures-of-baron-trenck-volume-2-gb-2669
The Life and Adventures of Baron Trenck, Volume 2

The Life and Adventures of Baron Trenck, Volume 2

Thomas Holcroft, the translator of these Memoirs of Baron
Trenck, was the author of about thirty plays, among which one,
The Road to Ruin, produced in 1792, has kept its place
upon the stage. He produced also four novels, the first in 1780, the
last in 1807. He was three times married, and lost his
first wife in 1790. In 1794, his sympathy with ideals of
the French revolutionists caused him to be involved with Hardy,
Horne Tooke, and Thelwall, in a charge of high treason; but when
these were acquitted, Holcroft and eight others were discharged
without trial.
Holcroft earned also by translation. They were first translated into
French by Baron Bock (Metz, 1787); more fully by Letourneur
(Paris, 1788); and again by himself (Strasbourg, 1788), with
considerable additions. A
Prefatory introduction to a work like this, can hope little better usage
from the Public than they had; it proclaims the approach of what has
often passed by before, adorned most certainly with greater splendour,
perhaps conducted too with greater regularity and skill: Yet will I not
despair of giving at least a momentary amusement to my countrymen in
general, while their entertainment shall serve as a vehicle for
conveying expressions of particular kindness to those foreign
individuals, whose tenderness softened the sorrows of absence, and who
eagerly endeavoured by unmerited attentions to supply the loss of their
company on whom nature and habit had given me stronger claims.
That I should make some reflections, or write down some observations, in
the course of a long journey, is not strange; that I should present them
before the Public is I hope not too daring: the presumption grew up out
of their acknowledged favour, and if too kind culture has encouraged a
coarse plant till it runs to seed, a little coldness from the same
quarter will soon prove sufficient to kill it. The flattering partiality
of private partisans sometimes induces authors to venture forth, and
stand a public decision; but it is often found to betray them too; not
to be tossed by waves of perpetual contention, but rather to sink in the
silence of total neglect. What wonder! He who swims in oil must be
buoyant indeed, if he escapes falling certainly, though gently, to the
bottom; while he who commits his safety to the bosom of the
wide-embracing ocean, is sure to be strongly supported, or at worst
thrown upon the shore.
On this principle it has been still my study to obtain from a humane and
generous Public that shelter their protection best affords from the
poisoned arrows of private malignity; for though it is not difficult to
despise the attempts of petty malice, I will not say with the
Philosopher, that I mean to build a monument to my fame with the stones
thrown at me to break my bones; nor yet pretend to the art of Swift's
German Wonder-doer, who promised to make them fall about his head like
so many pillows. Ink, as it resembles Styx in its colour, should
resemble it a little in its operation too; whoever has been once dipt
should become invulnerable: But it is not so; the irritability of
authors has long been enrolled among the comforts of ill-nature, and the
triumphs of stupidity; such let it long remain! He's right about the critics: the book was a finalist for the National Book Award in 1956. General readers may have been slower to take notice, but over time they did--what we've seen over decades is that any time people, across the political spectrum, start to feel that freedom is threatened, the book experiences a ripple of word-of-mouth interest.

They Thought They Were Free is an eloquent and provocative examination of the development of fascism in Germany. Mayer's book is a study of ten Germans and their lives from 1933-45, based on interviews he conducted after the war when he lived in Germany. Mayer had a position as a research professor at the University of Frankfurt and lived in a nearby small Hessian town which he disguised with the name "Kronenberg." "These ten men were not men of distinction," Mayer noted, but they had been members of the Nazi Party; Mayer wanted to discover what had made them Nazis. His discussions with them of Nazism, the rise of the Reich, and mass complicity with evil became the backbone of this book, an indictment of the ordinary German that is all the more powerful for its refusal to let the rest of us pretend that our moment, our society, our country are fundamentally immune.

A new foreword to this edition by eminent historian of the Reich Richard J. It demonstrates both Hitler's ability to persuade and his ability to instill a sense of heroic destiny. When most people hear the title, Mein Kampf, their first reaction is a growing emotional outburst that finally erupts in a yell of anti-Semitism; however anyone who has read Mein Kampf knows there is much more to the work. It is a retrospective on history, politics, and a guide to achieving power from the point of view of Adolf Hitler. It has become a dictators' manual, which has been read by all major dictators since World War II including Sadam Hussein who patterned his political movement, the Ba'ath party, after the Nazi party. It is read by corporate CEO's and politicians who seek to use the lessons for both good and bad ends. The accuracy of the political parts of Mein Kampf was proven by Hitler's successful rise to power and by the rise of those who have followed his formula. Many people think Mein Kampf is a long diatribe against Jews and other races. The truth is that only a small part of Mein Kampf is anti-Semitic. The majority of the book involves Hitler's discussion of the German people's difficult times after the First World War, his political theories and his organization of the Nazi Party, and it includes an especially large number of attacks against his enemies. Mein Kampf covers a wide-scope that offers an interesting interpretation of politics, business, people, and foreign policy matters. To characterize it as simply a racist work is to oversimplify its message. Germany did not follow Hitler because he was a racist, they followed him because he promised a great future, and Mein Kampf is where he promised that great future. Though the war's victors portrayed the uprising as naive and inchoate, Roper reveals a mass movement that sought to make good on the radical potential of the Protestant Reformation. By recovering what the people themselves felt and believed, Summer of Fire and Blood reconstructs the thrilling, tragic story of the peasants' fight to change the world.

Author: Lyndal Roper
Publisher: Basic Books
Published: 02/11/2025
Pages: 544
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.70lbs
Size: 9.60h x 6.50w x 1.90d
ISBN: 9781541647053

Review Citation(s):
Library Journal 12/20/2024 pg. 1
Kirkus Reviews 01/15/2025

About the Author
Lyndal Roper is Regius Professor of History at the University of Oxford. It is doubtful that there is any nation on earth that is not familiar with his colossal and provocative reputation. Adolf Hitler rose from the ranks as an unknown soldier, through the political chaos of the Weimar period, to take command of Germany and embark on a twelve-year odyssey of both great triumphs and great tragedy. Time magazine named him Man of the Year in 1938, but in terms of personal impact on the course of history, he may have been Man of the Century.
In the popular imagination, it is impossible to disassociate the man from his emphatic and passionate public addresses. As a result, Hitler's oratory is often credited with his victory in the competition for political influence in the early years of the NSDAP's struggle for power. And yet, competent translations of many of his influential speeches have largely been neglected, and those that do exist often do not do justice to the original material.
In His Own Words is not only a collection of new and improved translations of some of Hitler's most important speeches, but also includes original research to provide historical context and information about the speeches themselves. While not a complete collection of every speech he ever made-such a collection would span thousands of pages at minimum-the essential speeches translated in this edition will provide the English reader with an unparalleled understanding of how Hitler used his oratory to become the most recognizable political figure of the modern age.

Antelope Hill is proud to present In His Own Words, translated, compiled, and with commentary by C.J. Older translations altered passages, omitted passages, mistranslated Hitler's words, made some parts more sensational while concealing the true meaning in other parts of the book. If you have read one of these older translations of Mein Kampf, then you have not read the REAL Mein Kampf which is found only in this new special edition hardcover Ford Translation. Mein Kampf is often portrayed as nothing more than an Anti-Semitic work, however only 6% of it even talks about the Jews. The rest contains Hitler's ideas and beliefs for a greater nation plus his plan on how to accomplish that goal. The majority of the work involves Hitler's discussion of the German people's difficult times after the First World War, his political theories and his organization of the Nazi Party, as well as many attacks against his enemies which makes it a very interesting and moving story. Mein Kampf offers an interesting interpretation of politics, people, and foreign policy matters. To characterize it as simply a racist work is to oversimplify its message. Germany did not follow Hitler because he was a racist, they followed him because he promised a great future, and Mein Kampf is where he promised that great future. This Ford Translation offers: The most accurate translation ever produced. Phrases that are translated with precision and with no translator's bias. Uncommon words are replaced with more common and more meaningful terms. Any references to unfamiliar people, or places are explained in the text. This version is complete with all original passages and references restored, including passages omitted from other popular versions and passages censored by the Nazi government during the print history of the book. **This translation has corrected over 1000 errors which were present in past translations.** No English reader has been able to appreciate these subtleties in any previous English translation, not until the Ford Translation. In Waste Land, Robert D. Kaplan, geopolitical expert and author of more than twenty books on world affairs, incisively explains how we got here and where we are going. Kaplan makes a novel argument that the current geopolitical landscape must be considered alongside contemporary social phenomena such as urbanization and digital news media, grounding his ideas in foundational modern works of philosophy, politics, and literature, including the poem from which the title is borrowed, and celebrating a canon of traditionally conservative thinkers, including Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Jeane Kirkpatrick, and many others.

As in many of his books, Kaplan looks to history and literature to inform the present, drawing particular comparisons between today's challenges and the Weimar Republic, the post-World War I democratic German government that fell to Nazism in the 1930s. Just as in Weimar, which faced myriad crises inextricably bound up with global systems, the singular dilemmas of the twenty-first century--pandemic disease, recession, mass migration, the destabilizing effects of large-scale democracy and great power conflicts, and the intimate bonds created by technology--mean that every disaster in one country has the potential to become a global crisis, too. According to Kaplan, the solutions lie in prioritizing order in governing systems, arguing that stability and historic liberalism rather than mass democracy per se will save global populations from an anarchic future.

Waste Land is a bracing glimpse into a future defined by the connections afforded by technology but with remarkable parallels to the past. This hardcover book is also the first translation available in an English language audio format. Older translations altered passages, omitted passages, mistranslated Hitler's words, made some parts more sensational while concealing the true meaning in other parts of the book. If you have read one of these older translations of Mein Kampf, then you have not read the REAL Mein Kampf which is found only in the Ford Translation. Mein Kampf is often portrayed as nothing more than an Anti-Semitic work, however only 6% of it even talks about the Jews. The rest contains Hitler's ideas and beliefs for a greater nation plus his plan on how to accomplish that goal. He outlines his plans for not only world conquest, but the conquest of the universe. This edition is the only accurate and complete English translation of Mein Kampf ever made. This Ford Translation offers: * The most accurate translation ever produced. * Phrases that are translated with precision and with no translator's bias. * Uncommon words are replaced with more common and more meaningful terms. * Any references to unfamiliar people, or places are explained in the text. * This version is complete with all original passages and references restored, including passages omitted from other popular versions. This translation has corrected over 1000 errors which were present in past translations. No English reader has been able to appreciate these subtleties in any previous English translation, not until the Ford Translation. Includes Photos and Illustrations of events and people in Mein Kampf Volume I and II Click the order button to receive the book so many people wish to disparage and see why they will do anything to have the printing of this book outlawed. They have already tried... This is the only edition that was so thoroughly researched and verified that it required a separate book(Mein Kampf: A Translation Controversy) to document the changes and corrections made which prove the dynamic style of the Ford translation is superior to all past mechanical translations. It was recently rediscovered after all copies were thought to have been destroyed. This is one of the rarest Mein Kampf editions ever made and it passed from hand to hand without the owners knowing what it truly was or the value for 65 years. Finally, in 2009, the full story has not only been revealed but the text is available for the world to read. The Nazi Propaganda Ministry wanted to produce an English language version of Mein Kampf. However, they were also leery about revealing too much. In spite of this, they decided to go ahead and hired a British man to create a translation for the Nazi government which would later become the Official Nazi Translation written in 1936-37. The man was James Murphy and he had some sympathies for Nazi politics which made them trust him enough to begin a translation. This edition was translated while he was living in Germany. Over time, Murphy's opinions about the Nazi government changed. The Nazi government decided they no longer cared for him after he made some critical remarks and told him he had to leave. He left quickly without his translation into English. The Nazi government completed the translation and it was printed within Germany from the presses of the Nazi printing office. It is unknown exactly when the book was published but it was found in a prison camp which opened in 1938 and was liberated in 1945 so the book must have been published sometime during those dates. This is a very rare historical version which has previously been unknown. If you have already read Mein Kampf then you will find the differences fascinating. If you have not yet read it, then this version can quickly spark your curiosity. The edition using his translation was first published as a two volume set in the UK in 1939 and also in 22 weekly parts by Hutchison and Co Ltd. This authentic paperback brings together both of the original volumes complete with Murphy's 1939 introduction and a new introduction by Emmy Award winning historian Bob Carruthers. Murphy's was the only translation which was officially endorsed by the Nazi party during Hitler's lifetime and as such represents an opportunity to approach the work as it was presented to contemporary readers. This was the version of 'Mein Kampf' which the Nazi party hoped would spread the gospel of National Socialism throughout the UK, but by the time publication was underway World War II had commenced. Somewhat surprisingly, publication of the weekly illustrated edition was allowed to continue although all proceeds from the sale were diverted to the British Red Cross. This new publication of the entire primary source provides the reader with access to the complete historical document and provides a unique insight into the past by reproducing 'Mein Kampf' as it was presented to British readers in the thirties.

Author: Adolf Hitler
Publisher: Classic Rock Agency Ltd
Published: 11/16/2011
Pages: 430
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.73lbs
Size: 9.00h x 6.00w x 1.13d
ISBN: 9781908538697

This title is not returnable
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_98a7d8b0-8c4e-46e5-9586-318cd7641de7.jpg?v=1759975162
hitlers-american-model-the-united-states-and-the-making-of-nazi-race-law-9780691183060
Hitler's American Model: The United States and the Making of Nazi Race Law

How American race law provided a blueprint for Nazi Germany

Nazism triumphed in Germany during the high era of Jim Crow laws in the United States. Did the American regime of racial oppression in any way inspire the Nazis? The unsettling answer is yes. In Hitler's American Model, James Whitman presents a detailed investigation of the American impact on the notorious Nuremberg Laws, the centerpiece anti-Jewish legislation of the Nazi regime. Contrary to those who have insisted otherwise, Whitman demonstrates that the Nazis took a real, sustained, significant, and revealing interest in American race policies. He looks at the ultimate, ugly irony that when Nazis rejected American practices, it was sometimes not because they found them too enlightened but too harsh. It was written in Germany in the late 1930s and completed in the United States in 1940, where Fraenkel lived after fleeing the Nazis in 1938. The title derives from Fraenkel's thesis that National Socialism divided the law into two co-existing areas. The first of these, The Normative State, protects the legal order as expressed in statutes, decisions of courts and the activities of administrative agencies. Its counterpart is the Prerogative State, which is governed by the party. It exercised "unlimited arbitrariness and violence unchecked by any legal guarantees" (xiii). As a detailed record of what has happened to the Rechtstaat under totalitarian auspices, this book is without rival.--Fritz Morstein Marx, Harvard Law Review 54 (1940-1941), 1267 Several scholars have published authoritative descriptions of the German political and legal system. Dodd becomes America's first ambassador to Hitler's Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.

A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the "New Germany," she has one affair after another, including with the suprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance--and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler's true character and ruthless ambition.

Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. He would never have come to power if Germany's leading politicians had not responded to a spate of populist insurgencies by trying to co-opt him, a strategy that backed them into a corner from which the only way out was to bring the Nazis in. Hett lays bare the misguided confidence of conservative politicians who believed that Hitler and his followers would willingly support them, not recognizing that their efforts to use the Nazis actually played into Hitler's hands. In the nineteenth century, he was widely regarded as one of the most important thinkers of modern Europe. In this important and ambitious work, Matthew Bell offers a wide-ranging intellectual biography of Goethe, tracing the evolution of his thought and reassessing its value. Bell offers an original and illuminating explanation for the paradox of Goethe's thought, exploring how a radical individualist who espoused liberal and innovative ideas in some areas--in particular, religion, sexuality and science--could remain consistently conservative and authoritarian in his political outlook. Rereading Goethe through this new lens, Bell shows, reveals new dimensions of work we thought we knew well.

Author: Matthew Bell
Publisher: Princeton University Press
Published: 09/09/2025
Pages: 776
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 2.55lbs
Size: 9.40h x 6.20w x 2.10d
ISBN: 9780691153957

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 08/15/2025

About the Author
Matthew Bell is professor of German and comparative literature at King's College London. The Red Army battled to learn how to fight and win, while involved in a struggle for its very survival. But by 1944 it had a leadership that was able to wield it with lethal effect and with far more effective equipment than before. By contrast, the Wehrmacht had commenced a slow process of decline after the invasion of the Soviet Union. Hitler became increasingly unwilling to delegate decision-making to commanders in the field, which had been crucial to earlier success. The long years of fighting had also taken a heavy toll. Thousands of irreplaceable junior officers and NCOs were dead, wounded or prisoners.

Renowned Eastern Front expert Prit Buttar expertly brings these contrasting fortunes to life, trends which culminated in the huge battles of Bagration. As this masterful study conclusively shows, in 1944 the Red Army finally put together a campaign that utterly destroyed the German Army Group Centre. The Wehrmacht suffered the loss of over 300,000 men killed, wounded or taken prisoner and the Red Army rolled forward across Belarus to the outskirts of Warsaw. With lightning speed and devastating success, the German army tore through Soviet territory and rolled over the Red Army, scoring some of the most dramatic victories in military history--until the blitzkrieg bogged down during the approach on Moscow. At the spearhead of the attack was General Heinz Guderian, one of the most celebrated and controversial commanders of the war, who commanded a tank group in the center of the German front that stretched from the Baltic to the Black Sea.

Guderian's Panzers reconstructs Barbarossa from the perspective of Generaloberst Guderian and his 2nd Panzer Group. With the German war machine at the height of its martial prowess in June 1941, Guderian's group of 250,000 men and 900 tanks rapidly broke through the Soviet frontier defenses and thrust some 600 kilometers into Soviet Russia in a matter of weeks--in doing so playing an integral part in the successful encirclement (cauldron) battles of Belostok-Minsk (June/July 1941) and Smolensk (July/August 1941); each of these battles resulting in the loss of several Soviet armies and hundreds of thousands of prisoners. Despite having sustained alarming losses of personal and equipment in these opening battles, Guderian pushed his men, and himself, to even greater achievements, culminating in the triumphant cauldron Battle of Kiev in the Ukraine (September 1941) that obliterated Soviet Southwestern Front and resulted in the capture of over 600,000 Red Army POWs. It was, perhaps, Germany's greatest victory in WWII, and Guderian had made it happen.

In October/November 1941, the German Ostheer (Eastern Army) launched a desperate attempt to seize Moscow; and, once again, Heinz Guderian and his tank troops were at the forward edge of battle. Yet, by the end of November, the entire German offensive--exhausted, stretched thin, dangerously reduced in strength, and suddenly largely paralyzed by the fall rain and snow--had ground to a halt.

Meanwhile, in early December, the resurgent Red Army launched a major counteroffensive that, in the weeks ahead, not only threatened Guderian's forces with annihilation, but those German Army Group Center writ large. Guderian, and the Ostheer as a whole, were now trapped in a remorseless war of attrition they could never win. Refusing his superiors' orders to stand fast in the face to the advancing Soviet juggernaut, Guderian continued to jerk back in retreat with the remnants of his forces and, thus, was relieved of his command on 26 December 1941.

Military historian and Eastern Front expert, Craig Luther, draws on new material, from letters to diaries, to tell the story of Guderian's armored force during Operation Barbarossa and fleshes out the story with vivid firsthand accounts from the soldiers who slugged it out with the Red Army on the Eastern Front. The book traces the ups and downs of Guderian and his panzer group during six pivotal months of World War II and explains why and how the Germans, especially its panzers, achieved such impressive successes, only to be defeated on Moscow's doorstep.

Author: Craig W.
