Some of these have
never been brought to light since their publication more than three hundred
years ago, or been mentioned by the few writers who have interested
themselves in the literature of this subject. In the collections of voyages
and explorations, so often garnered, these have found no place. Most of
them are very rare, and have never been reprinted. Yet they do not deserve
to be thus overlooked, and in several ways this survey of them will, I
think, be useful for students of literature.
They reveal a widespread custom among Elizabethan and Jacobean
gentlemen, of completing their education by travel. There are scattered
allusions to this practice, in contemporary social documents: Anthony
Wood frequently explains how such an Oxonian "travelled beyond
seas and returned a compleat Person,"--but nowhere is this ideal of a
cosmopolitan education so explicitly set forth as it is in these essays.
Addressed to the intending tourist, they are in no sense to be confused
with guide-books or itineraries. They are
discussions of the benefits of travel, admonitions and warnings, arranged
to put the traveller in the proper attitude of mind towards his great task
of self-development. Taken in chronological order they outline for us the
life of the travelling student.
Beginning with the end of the sixteenth century when travel became the
fashion, as the only means of acquiring modern languages and modern
history, as well as those physical accomplishments and social graces by
which a young man won his way at Court, they trace his evolution up to the
time when it had no longer any serious motive; that is, when the chairs of
modern history and modern languages were founded at the English
universities, and when, with the fall of the Stuarts, the Court ceased to
be the arbiter of men's fortunes. In the course of this evolution they show
us many phases of continental influence in England; how Italian immorality
infected young imaginations, how the Jesuits won travellers to their
religion, how France became the model of deportment, what were the origins
of the Grand Tour, and so forth.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 13403
Author: Howard, Clare
Release Date: Sep 9, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

Christian Schools and Scholars\r - or, Sketches of Education from the Christian Era to the Council of Trent

The following pages have been written with the view
of presenting a general and connected sketch of the
history of Christian Education down to the period
of the Council of Trent, illustrated from the lives of
those who have, in successive ages, taken part in that
great work. A subject extending over so wide a field
could of necessity be only partially treated, and it
seems desirable, therefore, to explain certain omissions
which might otherwise cause disappointment. It was
believed that the object aimed at would, in most cases,
be better accomplished by introducing the reader to
the teachers themselves, than by undertaking to give
a complete account and critical examination of their
writings. Such an examination would properly enter
into a history of Christian Literature, a grand desideratum
indeed, but one which the present volumes
makes no pretensions to supply. Again, for obvious
reasons, the philosophical and theological controversies
connected with the lives of the great men
who form the subjects of the following studies, have[Pg vi]
been designedly touched on with the greatest possible
brevity: the history of such controversies seeming to
belong to Ecclesiastical History, and to be unsuitable
in a work like the present.
It has been the wish of the writer to treat the
subject from a purely historical point of view, and
to increase the value of the narrative by, as far as
possible, preserving the colouring, and sometimes
even the very language, of the original historians.
The notes appended to the text will give a general
idea of the authorities whence the matter has been
derived. The Ecclesiastical Histories of Fleury and
Rohrbacher have furnished the groundwork of the
general narrative. In the account of the Irish schools,
the chronology and the main facts have been drawn
from Lanigans Ecclesiastical History of Ireland.
The sketch of the restoration of letters under
Charlemagne has been chiefly taken from Creviers
Histoire de lUniversit de Paris, Launoys Treatise
De Scholis Celebrioribus, and the various lives, both
ancient and modern, of Charlemagne. In the chapters
referring to the subsequent history of the Dark Ages,
constant use has been made of the Acta Sanctorum
Ord. S. Benedicti, by DAchery and Mabillon, and of
the collections of the Lives of the Saints by Surius
and the Bollandists; also of the Vetera Analecta of
Mabillon, the Spicilegium of DAchery, the Amplissima
Collectio of Martene, and the Histoire Litteraire de la
France, by the Benedictines of St. Maur. Much[vii]
valuable matter has also been derived from the Monumenta
Germani Historica of Pertz, and the collection
of ancient German Chronicles by Meibomius; the
account of the school and scholars of St. Galls being
taken from Ekkehards History De Casibus S. Galli,
printed in the first volume of Goldastis collection, and
from the Benedictine Life of B. Notker. The notices
of the foreign universities are chiefly drawn from
Crevier, and from Tiraboschis Storia della Letteratura
Italiana, which latter work has been almost
exclusively used in the chapters on the Renaissance
in Italy. The chapter on the Dominicans and the
Universities is compiled from a considerable number
of authorities; chiefly, Tourons Vies des Hommes
Illustres, the Scriptores Ordinis Prdicatorum by
Echard and Quetil, the French translation of Dr.
Sigharts Life of Albert the Great, and the Constitutions
of the Order.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 63929
Author: Drane, Augusta Theodosia
Release Date: Dec 1, 2020
Format: eBook
Language: English

In repressive Elizabethan England, artists are frightened into dull conventionality; foreigners are suspect; popular entertainment largely consists of coarse spectacles, animal fights, and hangings. Why then and not earlier? Why there and not elsewhere? In The World at First Light, historian Bernd Roeck explores the cultural and historical preconditions that enabled the European Renaissance. Roeck shows that the rediscovery of ancient knowledge, including the science of the medieval Arab world, played a critical role in shaping the beginnings of Western modernity. He explains that the Renaissance emerged in a part of Europe where competing states and cities formed relatively open societies. Most of the era's creative minds--from Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo to Copernicus and Galileo--came from the middle classes. The art of arguing flowered, the basso continuo to intellectual and cultural breakthroughs.

Roeck argues that two revolutions shaped the Renaissance: a media revolution, triggered by Gutenberg's invention of movable type--which itself was a driving force behind the scientific revolution--and the advent of modern science. He also reports on the dark side of the era--hatred of Jews, witch panic, religious wars, and the atrocities of colonialism. In a series of meditative counterfactuals, Roeck considers other cultural rebirths throughout the first millennium, from the Islamic empire to the Carolingians, examining why the epic developments of the Renaissance took place in the West and not elsewhere. The complicated legacy of the Renaissance, he shows, encompasses the art of critical thinking as learned from the ancients, the emergence of the modern state, and the genesis of democracy.

Author: Bernd Roeck
Publisher: Princeton University Press
Published: 06/03/2025
Pages: 1184
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 3.85lbs
Size: 9.40h x 6.10w x 2.90d
ISBN: 9780691183831

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 04/15/2025
Library Journal 04/18/2025 pg. 1

About the Author
Bernd Roeck has been professor of modern history at the University of Zurich and director of the German Centre for Venetian Studies in Venice. This was a revolutionary period that saw great advances in areas such as art, science, philosophy, political theory, and economics. However, all this was accomplished against a background of extreme political turbulence on a continental scale, in the form of internal conflicts and international wars. Indeed, the Age of Reason itself was born at the same time as the Thirty Years' War, which would devastate central Europe to an extent that would not be experienced again until World War I. This period also saw the development of European empires across the world, as well as a lucrative new transatlantic commerce that brought transformative riches to Western European society. However, there was a dark underside to this brilliant wealth: it was dependent upon human slavery. By exploring all the key events and bringing to life some of the most influential characters of the era--including Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Newton, Descartes, Spinoza, Louis XIV, and Charles I--acclaimed historian Paul Strathern tells the vivid story of this paradoxical age, while also exploring the painful cost of creating the progress and modernity upon which the Western world was built.

Author: Paul Strathern
Publisher: Pegasus Books
Published: 01/07/2025
Pages: 400
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.20lbs
Size: 9.10h x 6.10w x 1.60d
ISBN: 9781639367979

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 11/15/2024
Publishers Weekly 12/09/2024
Choice 06/01/2025

About the Author
Strathern, Paul: - Paul Strathern's narrative nonfiction includes The Other Renaissance, The Venetians, Death in Florence, The Medici, Mendeleyev's Dream, The Florentines, Empire, and The Borgias, all available from Pegasus Books. But, in a historical document of great importance today, King Charles I of Anjou admitted he did not control his own city, that the true rulers of Naples were the "family."

The purpose of this book is not to retrace the birth of the Camorra through the traditional roads of ethnology, anthropology, sociology, or even folklore for the umpteenth time. Amedeo Feniello takes a new route through a number of previously unstudied elements and makes a unique observation: that these "families" of Naples were in power at the time of the birth of the Angevin Kingdom of Naples--one of the first European nation states. They would have been leaders of the new state, actively participating in the business of the royal family and serving as a new class of directors, officers, and bureaucrats.

Author: Amedeo Feniello
Publisher: Other Press (NY)
Published: 11/26/2024
Pages: 336
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.25lbs
Size: 9.37h x 6.34w x 1.09d
ISBN: 9781590511039

Review Citation(s):
Library Journal 08/30/2024 pg. 1
Kirkus Reviews 10/15/2024
Foreword 10/14/2024

About the Author
Amedeo Feniello teaches Medieval History in the Department of Social Science at the University of L'Aquila in Italy. Diverse voices spill out from these chapters as di Robilant recounts how Ramusio pursued the sources, and how he understood both the darker episodes of "exploration" involving colonial violence and the voyage stories which included accounts of people from African and Asian lands, who had a great deal to share about their cultures. The result is a far-flung and delightful homage to one of the founding fathers of modern geography.

Author: Andrea Di Robilant
Publisher: Knopf Publishing Group
Published: 06/18/2024
Pages: 272
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.18lbs
Size: 9.61h x 6.48w x 1.02d
ISBN: 9780307597076

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 05/15/2024
Booklist 06/01/2024 pg. 24
Shelf Awareness 06/20/2024

About the Author
ANDREA DI ROBILANT was born in Italy and educated in the United States at Columbia University, where he specialized in international affairs. The dome would literally need to be erected over thin air.

Of the many plans submitted, one stood out--a daring and unorthodox solution to vaulting what is still the largest dome in the world. It was offered not by a master mason or carpenter, but by a goldsmith and clockmaker named Filippo Brunelleschi, then forty-one, who would dedicate the next twenty-eight years to solving the puzzles of the dome's construction. An early traveller to the Americas who sailed on one of Columbus's voyages, Las Casas was so horrified by the wholesale massacre he witnessed that he dedicated his life to protecting the Indian community. He wrote A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies in 1542, a shocking catalogue of mass slaughter, torture and slavery, which showed that the evangelizing vision of Columbus had descended under later conquistadors into genocide. The historical Faustus, however, was something quite different: a magus--a learned magician fully embedded in the scholarly currents and public life of his time. And he was hardly the only one. Anthony Grafton argues that the magus in Renaissance Europe was a distinctive intellectual type, indebted to medieval counterparts as well as contemporaries like the engineer, artist, Christian humanist, and religious reformer. Alongside these better-known figures, the magus had a transformative impact on his social world.

Magus details the arts and experiences of learned magicians including Marsilio Ficino, Pico della Mirandola, Johannes Trithemius, and Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa. These erudite men were at the center of debates concerning licit and illicit magic, the divine and the diabolical. Over time, they turned magic into a complex art, which drew on contemporary engineering as well as classical astrology, probed the limits of what was acceptable in a changing society, and promised new ways to explore the self and the cosmos.

Resituating the magus in the cultural and intellectual order of Renaissance Europe, Grafton sheds new light on both the recesses of the learned magician's mind and the world he helped to build.

Author: Anthony Grafton
Publisher: Belknap Press
Published: 11/18/2025
Pages: 304
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.70lbs
Size: 8.20h x 5.50w x 1.00d
ISBN: 9780674301610

About the Author
Grafton, Anthony: - Anthony Grafton is the author of The Footnote, Defenders of the Text, Forgers and Critics, and Inky Fingers, among other books. It then turns to the rise of imperial powers that swiftly circled the globe, and to the explosion of intellectual, economic, and technological advancements sparked by the Enlightenment.

These were moments of flourishing in Western civilization, but also moments of uncertainty, as they portended the violent political upheavals that shook continental Europe and the Americas during the American, French and Bolivarian Revolutions as well as the Napoleonic Wars. The Industrial Revolution, the Romantic revolt against the Enlightenment, and a second wave of scientific advancement in the nineteenth century challenged any attempt to restore the classical unity of the West. Learned and self-effacing, he gathered a vast array of both popular and closely guarded narratives, from the journals of Marco Polo (he fact-checked them!) to detailed reports on Northern African cultures from the Muslim scholar and diplomat al-Hasan ibn Mohammad al-Wazzan (later known as Leo Africanus). Diverse voices spill out from these chapters as di Robilant recounts how Ramusio pursued the sources, and how he understood both the darker episodes
of "exploration" involving colonial violence and the voyage stories that included accounts of people from African and Asian lands, who had a great deal to share about their cultures. The defendants were all accused of the same heresy: claiming that Adam and Eve's original sin had been committing sodomy, a "celestial" pleasure reserved for God alone. Such claims were not merely subversive sexual innuendo. Rather, they were the most radical expressions of a much broader critique--one that not only targeted repressive sexual taboos but also denounced the corruption of the Church, questioned the authority of the pope, and suggested that organized religion itself was a hoax designed to maintain elite power.

As Umberto Grassi shows, these dissenters' beliefs about sexual freedom came to play a crucial role in the development of skeptical and atheistic positions. Many of the accused argued that, by violating God's exclusive right to engage in sodomy, Adam and Eve dared to make themselves like gods. This view, which led to charges of atheism, radicalized a more widely held belief that the ruling classes banned sodomy to prevent the masses from enjoying it. In turn, such heresies fueled indictments of Christian morality as an all-too-human invention, whose purpose was to reinforce a social order in which the ruling classes controlled both sexuality and religious truth.

Tracing a radical tradition of thought on trial, What God Kept for Himself establishes the firm relationship between sexual nonconformity and religious dissent in the early modern Mediterranean world.

Author: Umberto Grassi
Publisher: Harvard University Press
Published: 02/17/2026
Pages: 240
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.00lbs
Size: 9.30h x 6.20w x 1.10d
ISBN: 9780674302860

Review Citation(s):
Publishers Weekly 12/15/2025

About the Author
Grassi, Umberto: - Umberto Grassi is an independent scholar based in Pisa, Italy. Guns were in use on the battlefield by 1440; later in that century Leonardo da Vinci sketched a design for a faster-firing, more portable handgun that could be hidden beneath a cloak. As the gun proliferated in society, it became both a means of self-defence and a threat to civic order. In The Firearm Revolution, historian Catherine Fletcher explores the emergence of firearms in Renaissance Italy and beyond, describing the social transformations that accompanied the evolution of the handgun from innovative military technology to widely used personal accessory.

Fletcher shows that as guns became smaller and the new wheellock mechanism made concealed carry possible, Italian states increasingly tried to control their use--even as they viewed firearms as necessary for their militias. In the end, Fletcher reports, the importance of civic defence trumped the concern for social order. As guns became ever more acceptable, stories of how firearms aided Europeans' overseas conquests created a new and more positive image for a weapon once considered the devil's work. Debates over the regulation of firearms five centuries ago--which included arguments over the restriction of gun ownership, the use of guns for self-defence and the regulation of an armed militia--in many ways anticipate discussions about gun control today. Fletcher's groundbreaking account sheds new light on how governments weighed the competing priorities of defence and social order as they set out to build empires.

Author: Catherine Fletcher
Publisher: Princeton University Press
Published: 04/14/2026
Pages: 352
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.60lbs
Size: 9.40h x 6.40w x 1.40d
ISBN: 9780691272672

About the Author
Catherine Fletcher is professor of history at Manchester Metropolitan University. Meet lesser known (yet no less influential) figures like Christine de Pizan, a medieval proto-feminist, and Paulette Nardal, who took Paris's overwhelmingly white, male literary establishment by storm.
