With pick and shovel they are letting the rays of the April sun
into the great ice barrier which binds together the modern quays and the
old granite fortress where lie the bones of the Romanoff Czars.

This barrier is already weakened; it is widely decayed, in many places
thin, and everywhere treacherous; but it is, as a whole, so broad, so
crystallized about old boulders, so imbedded in shallows, so wedged into
crannies on either shore, that it is a great danger. The waters from
thousands of swollen streamlets above are pressing behind it; wreckage and
refuse are piling up against it; every one knows that it must yield. But
there is danger that it may resist the pressure too long and break
suddenly, wrenching even the granite quays from their foundations,
bringing desolation to a vast population, and leaving, after the
subsidence of the flood, a widespread residue of slime, a fertile
breeding-bed for the germs of disease.

But the patient mujiks are doing the right thing. The barrier, exposed
more and more to the warmth of spring by the scores of channels they are
making, will break away gradually, and the river will flow on beneficent
      and beautiful.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 505
Author: White, Andrew Dickson
Release Date: Apr 1, 1996
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/505_63507d26-844a-4f83-a944-7a8ad943ccc2.jpg?v=1671248241
history-of-the-conflict-between-religion-and-science-gb-1185
History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science

History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science

WHOEVER has had an opportunity of becoming acquainted with the mental
condition of the intelligent classes in Europe and America, must have
perceived that there is a great and rapidly-increasing departure from the
public religious faith, and that, while among the more frank this
divergence is not concealed, there is a far more extensive and far more
      dangerous secession, private and unacknowledged.

So wide-spread and so powerful is this secession, that it can neither be
treated with contempt nor with punishment. The working of his mind is
limited only by the bounds of his experience
and the power of his imagination. But this
natural liberty of private thinking is of little
value. It is unsatisfactory and even painful
to the thinker himself, if he is not permitted to
communicate his thoughts to others, and it
is obviously of no value to his neighbours.
Moreover it is extremely difficult to hide
thoughts that have any power over the
mind. If a mans thinking leads him to call
in question ideas and customs which regulate
the behaviour of those about him, to reject
beliefs which they hold, to see better ways of
life than those they follow, it is almost

[8]
impossible for him, if he is convinced of the
truth of his own reasoning, not to betray
by silence, chance words, or general attitude
that he is different from them and does not
share their opinions. Some have preferred,
like Socrates, some would prefer to-day, to
face death rather than conceal their thoughts.
Thus freedom of thought, in any valuable
sense, includes freedom of speech.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 10684
Author: Bury, J. I have not pretended to set forth
anew a formal and complete History of the Stage; it has rather been my
object to traverse by-paths connected with the subjectto collect and
record certain details and curiosities of histrionic life and
character, past and present, which have escaped or seemed unworthy the
notice of more ambitious and absolute chroniclers. At most I would
have these pages considered as but portions of the story of the
British Theatre whispered from the side-wings.
Necessarily, the work is derived from many sources, owes much to
previous labours, is the result of considerable searching here and
there, collation, and selection. I have endeavoured to make
acknowledgment, as opportunity occurred, of the authorities I stand
indebted to, for this fact or that story. I desire, however, to make
express mention of the frequent aid I have received from Mr. J. Payne
Collier's admirable "History of English Dramatic Poetry" (1831),
containing Annals of the Stage to the Restoration. Mr. Collier, having
enjoyed access to many public and private collections of the greatest
value, has much enriched the store of information concerning our
Dramatic Literature amassed by Malone, Stevens, Reed, and Chalmers.
Referring to numberless published and unpublished papers, to sources
both familiar and rare, Mr. Collier has been enabled, moreover, to
increase in an important degree our knowledge of the Elizabethan
Theatre, its manners and customs, ways and means. I feel that I owe
to his archological studies many apt quotations and illustrative
passages I could scarcely have supplied from my own unassisted
resources.
Some additions to the text I have deemed expedient. The few
errorsthey were very few and unimportantdiscovered in the first
edition I have corrected in the present publication; certain
redundancies I have suppressed; here and there I have ventured upon
condensation, and generally I have endeavoured to bring my statements
into harmony with the condition of the stage at the present moment.
Substantially, however, the "Book of the Play" remains what it was at
the date of its original issue, when it was received by the reading
public with a kindness and cordiality I am not likely to forget.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 15151
Author: Cook, Dutton
Release Date: Feb 22, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

Essays on the work entitled "Supernatural Religion"

This republication of Essays which were written several years ago has
no reference to any present controversies. Its justification is the
fact that strangers and friends in England and America alike had urged
me from time to time to gather them together, that they might be had in
a more convenient form, believing that they contained some elements of
permanent value which deserved to be rescued from the past numbers of
a Review not easily procurable, and thus rendered more accessible to
students. I had long resisted these solicitations for reasons which
I shall explain presently; but a few months ago, when I was prostrated
by sickness and my life was hanging on a slender thread, it became
necessary to give a final answer to the advice tendered to me. This
volume is the result. The kind offices of my chaplain the Rev. J.R.
Harmer, who undertook the troublesome task of verifying the references,
correcting the press, and adding the indices, when I was far too ill to
attend to such matters myself, have enabled me to bring it out sooner
than I had hoped.
When I first took up the book entitled 'Supernatural Religion,' I felt,
whether rightly or wrongly, that its criticisms were too loose and
pretentious, and too full of errors, to produce any permanent effect;
and for the most part attacks of this kind on the records of the Divine
Life are best left alone. But I found that a cruel and unjustifiable
assault was made on a very dear friend to whom I was attached by the
most sacred personal and theological ties; and that the book which
contained this attack was from causes which need not be specified
obtaining a notoriety unforeseen by me. Thus I was forced to break
silence; and, as I advanced with my work, I seemed to see that, though
undertaken to redress a personal injustice, it might be made subservient
to the wider interests of the truth.
Paper succeeded upon paper, and I had hoped ultimately to cover the
whole ground, so far as regards the testimony of the first two centuries
to the New Testament Scriptures. But my time was not my own, as I was
necessarily interrupted by other literary and professional duties which
claimed the first place; and meanwhile I was transferred to another and
more arduous sphere of practical work, being thus obliged to postpone
indefinitely my intention of giving something like completeness to the
work.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 18191
Author: Lightfoot, J. For at least thirty years it
has been a considerable part of the constant occupation of the author to
observe and to record the life of the contemporary stage. Since 1860 he
has written intermittently in various periodicals, and since the summer
of 1865 he has written continuously in the New York Tribune, upon actors
and their art; and in that way he has accumulated a great mass of
historical commentary upon the drama. These were usually painted on both
sides and folded together like a screen. Several of these codices are
still in existence from the Nahua and Zapotec areas in Mexico, but only
three have come down to us from the Maya region which is included in the
peninsula of Yucatan, the states of Tabasco and Chiapas in Mexico, and
portions of Guatemala and Honduras. These three manuscripts are the
Dresden Codex in the Royal Public Library at Dresden, the
Tro-Cortesianus (formerly considered to have been two, the Troano and
the Cortesianus) in the National Archaeological Museum at Madrid, and
the Peresianus in the National Library at Paris. These pre-Columbian
manuscripts have all been published in facsimile. (See bibliography.)
These remains of a once extensive literature show evidence not only of
considerable intellectual attainments on the part of their authors but
also of a high degree of artistic skill in the drawings and
hieroglyphics. The frequent occurrence in these manuscripts of
representations of animals showing various degrees of elaboration and
conventionalization has led us to undertake the task of identifying
these figures as far as possible and studying the uses and significance
of the several species, a[284] field practically untouched.284-*
Frstemann in his various commentaries on the Maya codices (1902, 1903,
1906), Brinton (1895), and deRosny (1876) have only commented briefly
upon this side of the study of the manuscripts. Seler (1904a) and some
others have written short papers on special animals. During the
preparation of this paper there has appeared a brief account by Stempell
(1908) of the animals in the Maya codices. The author has, however,
omitted a number of species and, as we believe, misidentified others. In
making our identifications we have given the reasons for our
determinations in some detail and have stated the characteristics
employed to denote the several species.
We have not limited ourselves entirely to the Maya manuscripts as we
have drawn upon the vast amount of material available in the stone
carvings, the stucco figures, and the frescoes found throughout the Maya
area. This material has by no means been exhausted in the present paper.
In addition to the figures from the Maya codices and a comparatively few
from other sources in the Maya region, we have introduced for comparison
in a number of cases figures from a few of the ancient manuscripts of
the Nahuas and the Zapotecs to the north. The calendar of these two
peoples is fundamentally the same as that of the Mayas. The year is made
up in the same way being composed of eighteen months of twenty days each
with five days additional at the end of the year. There is therefore a
more or less close connection as regards subject matter in all the
pre-Columbian codices of Mexico and Central America but the manner of
presentation differs among the different peoples of this region.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 19042
Author: Allen, Glover M. Volume I.

Through the whole process of my inquiries, it has been my endeavour,
from some plain and determinate principles, to open the way to many
interesting truths. And as I have shewn the certainty of an universal
Deluge from the evidences of most nations, to which we can gain access, I
come now to give an history of the persons who survived that event; and
of the families which were immediately descended from them. After having
mentioned their residence in the region of Ararat, and their migration
from it, I shall give an account of the roving of the Cuthites, and of
their coming to the plains of Shinar, from whence they were at last
expelled. To this are added observations upon the histories of Chaldea
and Egypt; also of Hellas, and Ionia; and of every other country which
was in any degree occupied by the sons of Chus. There have been men of
learning who have denominated their works from the families, of which
they treated; and have accordingly sent them into the world under the
title of Phaleg, Japhet, and Javan. I might, in like manner, have
prefixed to mine the name either of Cuth, or Cuthim; for, upon the
history of this people my system chiefly turns. It may be asked, if there
were no other great families upon earth, besides that of the Cuthites,
worthy of record: if no other people ever performed great actions, and
made themselves respectable to posterity. Such there possibly may have
been; and the field is open to any who may choose to make inquiry. My
taking this particular path does not in the least abridge others from
prosecuting different views, wherever they may see an opening.
As my researches are deep, and remote, I shall sometimes take the
liberty of repeating what has preceded; that the truths which I maintain
may more readily be perceived. We are oftentimes, by the importunity of a
persevering writer, teazed into an unsatisfactory compliance, and yield a
painful assent; but, upon closing the book, our scruples return, and we
lapse at once into doubt and darkness. It has therefore been my rule to
bring vouchers for every thing, which I maintain; and though I might upon
the renewal of my argument refer to another volume, and a distant page,
yet I many times choose to repeat my evidence, and bring it again under
immediate inspection. And if I do not scruple labour and expense, I hope
the reader will not be disgusted by this seeming redundancy in my
arrangement. What I have now to present to the public, contains matter of
great moment, and should I be found to be in the right, it will afford a
sure basis for the future history of the world. None can well judge
either of the labour, or utility of the work, but those who have been
conversant in the writings of chronologers, and other learned men, upon
these subjects, and seen the difficulties with which they were
embarrassed. Great, undoubtedly, must have been the learning and
  perspicuity of a Petavius, Perizonius, Scaliger, Grotius, and Le Clerc;
also of an Usher, Pearson, Marsham, and Newton. Yet it may possibly be
found at the close, that a feeble arm has effected what those prodigies
  in science have overlooked.
Many, who have finished their progress, and are determined in their
principles, will not perhaps so readily be brought over to my opinion.
But they who are beginning their studies, and passing through a process
of Grecian literature, will find continual evidences arise; almost every
step will afford fresh proofs in favour of my system. As the desolation
of the world by a deluge, and the renewal of it in one person, are points
in these days particularly controverted; many, who are enemies to
Revelation, upon seeing these truths ascertained, may be led to a more
intimate acquaintance with the Scriptures: and such an insight cannot but
be productive of good. For our faith depends upon historical experience:
and it is mere ignorance, that makes infidels. Hence it is possible, that
some may be won over by historical evidence, whom a refined theological
argument cannot reach. An illness, which some time ago confined me to my
bed, and afterwards to my chamber, afforded me, during its recess, an
opportunity of making some versions from the poets whom I quote, when I
was little able to do any thing of more consequence. We purpose to show its historical
position, and to present, as faithfully as possible, its antagonism to
evangelical Christianity. The guardians of the interests of the church
cannot excuse themselves from effort toward the eradication of this
error by saying that it is one which will soon decay by the force of its
natural autumn. Posterity will not hesitate to charge us with gross
negligence if we fail to appreciate the magnitude of Rationalism, and
only deal with it as the growth of a day. We have half conquered an
enemy when we have gained a full knowledge of his strength.
There was a time when Rationalism was a theme of interest to the
Protestant church of Germany alone. But that day is now past. Having
well nigh run its race in the land of Luther, it has crossed the Rhine
into France and the Netherlands, invaded England, and [Pg 2]now threatens the
integrity of the domain of Anglo-Saxon theology. Thus it has assumed an
importance which should not be overlooked by British and American
thinkers who love those dearly-bought treasures of truth that they have
received as a sacred legacy from the martyrs and reformers of the
English church. The recent writings of the exegetical Rationalists of
England are sufficient to induce us to gather up our armor and adjust it
for immediate defence. Delay will entail evil. The reason why skepticism
has wrought such fearful ravages at various stages during the career of
the church has been the tardiness of the church in watching the sure and
steady approach, and then in underrating the real strength of her
adversary. The present History will be written for the specific purpose
of awakening an interest in the danger that now threatens us. We have no
ambition to deal with the past, further than to enable it to minister to
the immediate demands of the present. We all belong to this generation;
it calls for our energies; it has its great wants; and we shall be held
justly responsible if we neglect to contribute our share toward the
progress of our contemporaries.
The three principles which have influenced us to undertake a discussion
of the present themeand of the truth of which we are profoundly
convincedare the following:
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 19397
Author: Hurst, J. HARRIS.
As there has been much uncertainty about the purport and extent of
  these terms; and they are of great consequence in the course of history;
I will endeavour to state their true meaning. Phoinic, or Poinic, was an
Egyptian and Canaanitish term of honour; from whence were formed ,
  ,

of the Greeks, and Phoinic, Poinicus, Poinicius of the Romans; which were
afterwards changed to Phnix, Punicus, and [1]Puniceus. It was originally a title,
which the Greeks made use of as a provincial name: but it was never
admitted as such by the people, to whom it was thus appropriated, till
the Greeks were in possession of the country. And even then it was but
partially received: for though mention is made of the coast of
Phnice, yet we find the natives called Sidonians, Tyrians, and [2]Canaanites, as
late as the days of the Apostles. It was an honorary term, compounded of
Anac with the Egyptian prefix; and rendered at times both Phoinic and
Poinic. It signified a lord or prince: and was particularly assumed by
the sons of Chus and Canaan. The Mysians seem to have kept nearest to the
original pronunciation, who gave this title to the God Dionusus, and
  called him Ph'anac.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 19584
Author: Bryant, Jacob
Release Date: Oct 18, 2006
Format: eBook
Language: English

A Museum for Young Gentlemen and Ladies\r - Or, a Private Tutor for Little Masters and Misses

The Chinese are masters of the South and East parts of Tartary. Hardly a man living whom
I suspected of having worked for Punch, but I have communicated with
him; scarce one but has afforded all the information within his
knowledge in response to my application. Editor and members of the
Punch Staff, past and present"outsiders," equally with those
belonging to "the Table"the relations and friends of such as are dead,
all have given their help, and have shown an interest in the work which
I hope the result may be thought to justify. All this mass of
materialall the evidence, published and unpublished, that was adduced
in order to establish certain points and refute othershad to be
carefully sifted and collated, contrary testimony weighed, and the truth
determined. Especially was this the case in dealing with the valuable
reminiscences imparted by Punch's earliest collaborators, still or
till lately living. Of undoubted contributors and their work, it may be
stated, more than two hundred and fifty are here dealt with. A further
number cheerfully submitted to cross-examination on one or other of the
many subjects touched upon; and probably as many more were approached
with only negative results.
My special thanks are due to Mrs. Chaplin, the daughter of the late Mr.
Ebenezer Landells, who unreservedly placed in my hands all the Punch
documents, legal and otherwise, accounts, and letters, concerning the
origin and early editorships of Punch, which have been preserved in
the family; and to Messrs. Bradbury and Agnew, who have supplemented
these with similar assistance, as well as with books of the Firm
establishing points of literary interest not hitherto suspected,
together with the letters of Thackeray which illustrate his early
connection with and final secession from the Staff. Apart from their
general interest, these documents, taken together, establish the facts
of such very vexed questions as the origin and the early editorships of
Punch. This is the more satisfactory, perhaps, by reason of the
numerous unfounded claimsor founded chiefly on family tradition or
filial pride and affectionwhich are still being made on behalf of
supposed originators of the Paper. Even these partisan historians, it is
believed, will hardly be able to resist the proofs here set forth;
although attested fact does not, with them, necessarily carry
conviction. A list of these
errors is found at the end of this book.
In presenting this Commentary on the Codex Perez to students of American
Archaeology, the Peabody Museum adds another paper to its series
relating to the study of the hieroglyphic writing of the ancient peoples
of Mexico and Central America.
The Museum is fortunate in adding to its collaborators Mr. William E.
Gates, of Point Loma, California, who for more than ten years has been
an earnest student of American hieroglyphs. From his lifelong studies in
linguistics in connection with his research in the motifs of
civilizations and cultures, he comes well-equipped to take up the
difficult and all-absorbing study of American hieroglyphic writing. Mr.
Gates has materially advanced this study by his reproduction of the
glyphs in type. These type-forms he has used first in his reproduction
of the Codex Perez, and now in this Commentary they are used for the
first time in printing. The method used in the construction of this font
of type is explained by Mr. Gates in the following pages. It appears probable that primitive men endowed with their
own qualities every seemingly active object in the world. Experience
forced them to take note of the relations of all objects to themselves
and to one another. The knowledge of the sequences of phenomena,
so far as the latter are not regarded as acting intentionally on him,
constitutes man's science and philosophy; so far as they are held
to act on him intentionally, the knowledge of them constitutes his
theory of religion, and his sense of relation with them is his religious
sentiment. Science and religion are coeval in man's history,
and both are independently continuous and progressive. At first
science is in the background because most objects, since they are
believed to be alive and active, are naturally supposed by man to
affect him purposely; it grows slowly, keeping pace with observation,
and constantly abstracting phenomena from the domain of religion.1
Religion is man's attitude toward the universe regarded as a social
and ethical force; it is the sense of social solidarity with objects regarded
as Powers, and the institution of social relations with them.
2. These Powers are thought of in general as mysterious, and
as mightier than ordinary living men.2 Ordinarily the feeling toward
them on man's part is one of dependencehe is conscious of his
2inferiority. In some forms of philosophic thought the man regards
himself as part of the one universal personal Power, or as part of
the impersonal Whole, and his attitude toward the Power or the
Whole is like that of a member of a composite political body toward
the whole body; such a position is possible, however, only in a
period of very advanced culture.
3. There being no records of initial humanity, it is hardly possible
for us to know certainly what the earliest men's feeling was
toward the animate and inanimate forces around them. Not improbably
it was simply fear, the result of ignorance of their nature
and absence of social relations with them. But in the human
communities known to us, even the lowest, the relations with extrahuman
beings appear to be in general of a mixed nature, sometimes
friendly, sometimes unfriendly, but neither pure love nor
pure hatred. So refined a feeling as love for a deity is not found
among savages. As religion springs from the human demand for
safety and happiness as the gift of the extrahuman Powers, hostility
to them has been generally felt to be opposed to common sense.3
Coercion there has been, as in magical procedures, or to bring a
stubborn deity to terms; and occasional antagonism (for example,
toward foreign gods); but not hatred proper as a dogma, except
in the great ethical religions toward evil spirits, and in certain elaborate
philosophic systemsas, for example, in the Gnostic conception
of an imperfect Demiurge, or in the assumption of an original
blind Chance or blind Will whose products and laws are regarded
as not entitled to respect and obedience.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 27829
Author: Toy, Crawford Howell
Release Date: Jan 18, 2009
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Jastrow, Morris, 1861-1921

Atheism in Pagan Antiquity

The present inquiry is the outcome of a
request to write an article on Atheism
for a projected dictionary of the religious
history of classical antiquity. On going through
the sources I found that the subject might well
deserve a more comprehensive treatment than the
scope of a dictionary would allow. It is such a
treatment that I have attempted in the following
pages.

A difficulty that occurred at the very beginning
of the inquiry was how to define the notion of
atheism. Nowadays the term is taken to designate
the attitude which denies every idea of God. Even
antiquity sometimes referred to atheism in this
sense; but an inquiry dealing with the history of
religion could not start from a definition of that
kind. It would have to keep in view, not the
philosophical notion of God, but the conceptions of
the gods as they appear in the religion of antiquity.
Hence I came to define atheism in Pagan antiquity
as the point of view which denies the existence of the
ancient gods. It is in this sense that the word will
be used in the following inquiry.

Even though we disregard philosophical atheism,
[pg 002]
the definition is somewhat narrow; for
in antiquity mere denial of the existence of the
gods of popular belief was not the only attitude
which was designated as atheism. But it has the
advantage of starting from the conception of the
ancient gods that may be said to have finally prevailed.
In the sense in which the word is used
here we are nowadays all of us atheists. We do
not believe that the gods whom the Greeks and the
Romans worshipped and believed in exist or have
ever existed; we hold them to be productions of
the human imagination to which nothing real corresponds.
This view has nowadays become so ingrained
in us and appears so self-evident, that we
find it difficult to imagine that it has not been
prevalent through long ages; nay, it is perhaps a
widely diffused assumption that even in antiquity
educated and unbiased persons held the same
view of the religion of their people as we do. In
reality both assumptions are erroneous: our
atheism in regard to ancient paganism is of
recent date, and in antiquity itself downright denial
of the existence of the gods was a comparatively
rare phenomenon. The demonstration of this fact,
rather than a consideration of the various intermediate
positions taken up by the thinkers of
antiquity in their desire to avoid a complete rupture
with the traditional ideas of the gods, has been one
of the chief purposes of this inquiry.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 28312
Author: Drachmann, A. The indestructible
beauty of Greek art, whereof Helen was an emblem, became, through the
discovery of classic poetry and sculpture, the possession of the modern world.
Medivalism took this Helen to wife, and their offspring, the Euphorion of
Goethe's drama, is the spirit of the modern world.J.A. Symonds, "Renaissance
In Italy," vol. ii. p. 54.
Euphorion is the name given by Goethe to the
marvellous child born of the mystic marriage of Faust
and Helena. Who Faust is, and who Helena, we all
know. Faust, of whom no man can remember the
youth or childhood, seems to have come into the
world by some evil spell, already old and with the
faintness of body and of mind which are the heritage
of age; and every additional year of mysterious study
and abortive effort has made him more vacillating of
step and uncertain of sight, but only more hungry of
soul. Postponed and repressed by reclusion from the
world, and desperate tension over insoluble problems;
diverted into the channels of mere thought and vision;
there boils within him the energy, the passion, of
retarded youth: its appetites and curiosities, which,
cramped by the intolerant will, and foiled by many a
sudden palsy of limb and mind, torment him with
mad visions of unreal worlds, mock him with dreams
of superhuman powers, from which he awakes in
impotent and apathetic anguish. But these often-
withstood and often-baffled cravings are not those
merely of scholar or wizard, they are those of soldier
and poet and monk, of the mere man: lawless desires
which he seeks to divert, but fails, from the things of
the flesh and of the world to the things of the reason;
supersensuous desires for the beautiful and intangible,
which he strives to crush, but in vain, with the cynical
scepticism of science, which derides the things it cannot
grasp. In this strange Faustus, made up of so many
and conflicting instincts; in this old man with ever-
budding and ever-nipped feelings of youthfulness,
muddling the hard-won secrets of nature in search
after impossibilities; in him so all-sided, and yet so
wilfully narrowed, so restlessly active, yet so often palsied
and apathetic; in this Faustus, who has laboured
so much and succeeded in so little, feeling himself at
the end, when he has summed up all his studies, as
foolish as beforewhich of us has not learned to
recognize the impersonated Middle Ages? And
Helena, we know her also, she is the spirit of Antiquity.
Personified, but we dare scarcely say, embodied;
for she is a ghost raised by the spells of
Faustus, a simulacrum of a thing long dead; yet with
such continuing semblance of life, nay, with all life's
real powers, that she seems the real, vital, living one,
and Faustus yonder, thing as he is of the present,
little better than a spectre. Yet Helena has been
ages before Faust ever was; nay, by an awful mystery
like those which involve the birth of Pagan gods,
she whom he has evoked to be the mother of his only
son has given, centuries before, somewhat of her life
to make this self-same Faust. A strange mystery of
Fate's necromancy this, and with strange anomalies.
For opposite this living, decrepit Faust, Helena, the
long dead, is young; and she is all that which Faust
is not. Knowing much less than he, who has plunged
his thoughts like his scalpel into all the mysteries of
life and death, she yet knows much more, can tell
him of the objects and aims of men and things; nay,
with little more than the unconscious faithfulness to
instinct of the clean-limbed, placid brute, she can
give peace to his tormented conscience; and, while
he has suffered and struggled and lashed himself for
every seeming baseness of desire, and loathed himself
for every imagined microscopic soiling, she has
walked through good and evil, letting the vileness of
sin trickle off her unhidden soul, so quietly and
majestically that all thought of evil vanishes; and
the self-tormenting wretch, with macerated flesh hidden
beneath the heavy garments of mysticism and
philosophy, suddenly feels, in the presence of her unabashed
nakedness, that he, like herself, is chaste.
Such are the parents, Faustus and Helena; we know
them; but who is this son Euphorion? To me it
seems as if there could be but one answerthe Renaissance.
Goethe indeed has told us (though, with his
rejuvenation of Faustus, unknown to the old German
legend and to our Marlowe, in how bungling a manner!)
the tale of that mystic marriage; but Goethe could
not tell us rightly, even had he attempted, the real
name of its offspring. For even so short a time ago,
the Middle Ages were only beginning to be more
than a mere historical expression, Antiquity was being
only then critically discovered; and the Renaissance,
but vaguely seen and quite unformulated by the
first men, Gibbon and Roscoe, who perceived it at
all, was still virtually unknown. To Goethe, therefore,
it might easily have seemed as if the antique
Helena had only just been evoked, and as if of her
union with the worn-out century of his birth, a real
Euphorion, the age in which ourselves are living,
might have been born. But, at the distance of additional
time, and from the undreamed-of height upon
which recent historical science has enabled us to stand,
we can easily see that in this he would have been
mistaken. Not only is our modern culture no child of
Faustus and Helena, but it is the complex descendant,
strangely featured by atavism from various sides, of
many and various civilizations; and the eighteenth
century, so far from being a Faustus evoking as his
bride the long dead Helen of Antiquity, was in itself a
curiously varied grandchild or great-grandchild of such
a marriage, its every moral feature, its every intellectual
movement proclaiming how much of its being was inherited
from Antiquity. No allegory, I well know,
and least of all no historical allegory, can ever be
strained to fit quite tightthe lives of individuals and
those of centuries, their modes of intermixture, genesis,
and inheritance are far different; but if an allegory is
to possess any meaning at all, we must surely apply it
wherever it will fit most easily and completely; and
the beautiful allegory prepared by the tradition of the
sixteenth century for the elaborating genius of Goethe,
can have a real meaning only if we explain Faust as representing
the Middle Ages, Helena as Antiquity, and
Euphorion as that child of the Middle Ages, taking
life and reality from them, but born of and curiously
nurtured by the spirit of Antiquity, to which significant
accident has given the name of Renaissance.
After Euphorion I have therefore christened this
book; and this not from any irrational conceit of
knowing more (when I am fully aware that I know
infinitely less) than other writers about the life and
character of this wonderful child of Helena and Faustus,
but merely because it is more particularly as the offspring
of this miraculous marriage, and with reference
to the harmonies and anomalies which therefrom
resulted, that Euphorion has exercised my thoughts.
The Renaissance has interested and interests me, not
merely for what it is, but even more for what it sprang
from, and for the manner in which the many things
inherited from both Middle Ages and Renaissance, the
tendencies and necessities inherent in every special
civilization, acted and reacted upon each other, united
in concord or antagonism; forming, like the gases of
the chemist, new things, sometimes like and sometimes
unlike themselves and each other; producing now
some unknown substance of excellence and utility, at
other times some baneful element, known but too well
elsewhere, but unexpected here. But not the watching
of the often tragic meeting of these great fatalities
of inherited spirit and habit only: for equally fascinating
almost has been the watching of the elaboration
by this double-natured period of things of little
weight, mere trifles of artistic material bequeathed to
it by one or by the other of its spiritual parents. The
charm for mea charm sometimes pleasurable, but
sometimes also painful, like the imperious necessity
which we sometimes feel to see again and examine,
seemingly uselessly, some horrible evilthe charm, I
mean the involuntary compulsion of attention, has
often been as great in following the vicissitudes of a
mere artistic item, like the Carolingian stories or the
bucolic element, as it has been in looking on at the
dissolution of moral and social elements. And in
this, that I have tried to understand only where my
curiosity was awakened, tried to reconstruct only
where my fancy was taken; in short, studied of this
Renaissance civilization only as much or as little as I
cared, depends all the incompleteness and irrelevancy
and unsatisfactoriness of this book, and depends also
whatever addition to knowledge or pleasure it may
afford; Were I desirous of giving a complete, clear
notion of the very complex civilization of the Renaissance,
a kind of encyclopdic atlas of that period,
where (by a double power which history alone possesses)
you could see at once the whole extent and
shape of this historical territory, and at the same time,
with all its bosses of mountain and furrows of valley,
the exact composition of all its various earths and
waters, the exact actual colour and shape of all its
different vegetations, not to speak of its big towns
and dotting villages;were I desirous of doing this, I
should not merely be attempting a work completely
beyond my faculties, but a work moreover already
carried out with all the perfection due to specially
adapted gifts, to infinite patience and ingenuity, occasionally
amounting almost to genius. Such is not
at all within my wishes, as it assuredly would be
totally without my powers.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 31303
Author: Lee, Vernon
Release Date: Feb 17, 2010
Format: eBook
Language: English

Euphorion - Vol. II\r - Being Studies of the Antique and the Mediaeval in the Renaissance

Real and Idealthese are the handy terms, admiring
or disapproving, which criticism claps with random
facility on to every imaginable school. This artist
or group of artists goes in for the realthe upright,
noble, trumpery, filthy real; that other artist or group
of artists seeks after the idealthe ideal which may
mean sublimity or platitude. We summon every
living artist to state whether he is a realist or an
idealist; we classify all dead artists as realists or
idealists; we treat the matter as if it were one of
almost moral importance. Now the fact of the case
is that the question of realism and idealism, which
we calmly assume as already settled or easy to settle
by our own sense of right and wrong, is one of the
tangled questions of art-philosophy; and one, moreover,
which no amount of theory, but only historic
fact, can ever set right. For, to begin with, we find
realism and idealism coming before us in different
ways and with different meaning and importance.
All art which is not addressing (as decrepit art is
forced to do) faculties to which it does not spontaneously
and properly appealall art is decorative, ornamental,
idealistic therefore, since it consciously or
unconsciously aims, not merely at reproducing the
already existing, but at producing something which
shall repay the looking at it, something which shall ornament,
if not a place, at least our lives; and such making
of the ornamental, of the worth looking at, necessarily
implies selection and arrangementthat is to say
idealism. At the same time, while art aims definitely
at being in this sense decorative, art may very possibly
aim more immediately at merely reproducing, without,
selection or arrangement, the actually existing things
of the world; and this in order to obtain the mere
power of representation. In short, art which is idealistic
as a master will yet be realistic as a scholar: it
decorates when it achieves, it copies when it studies.
But this is only half the question. Certain whole
schools may be described as idealistic, others as
realistic, in tendency; and this, not in their study, but
in their achievement. One school will obviously be
contented with forms the most unselected and vulgar;
others will go but little out of their way in search of
form-superiority; while yet others, and these we must
emphatically call idealistic, are squeamish to the last
degree in the choice and adaptation of form, anxious,
to get the very best, and make the very best of it.
Yet, on thinking over it, we shall find that realistic.
and idealistic schools are all, in their achievements,
equally striving after something which is not the mere
reproduction of the already existing as suchstriving,
in short, after decoration. The pupil of Perugino
will, indeed, wait patiently to begin his work until he
can find a model fit for a god or goddess; while the
fellow-craftsman of Rembrandt will be satisfied with
the first dirty old Jew or besotten barmaid that comes
to hand. But the realistic Dutchman is not, therefore,
any the less smitten with beauty, any the less eager
to be ornamental, than the idealistic Italian: his man
and woman he takes indeed with off-hand indifference,
but he places them in that of which the Italian shall
perhaps never have dreamed, in that on which he has
expended all his science, his skill, his fancy, in that
which he gives as his addition to the beautiful things
of artin atmosphere, in light, which are to the everyday
atmosphere and light what the patiently sought
for, carefully perfected god or goddess model of
Raphael is to the everyday Jew, to the everyday
barmaid, of Rembrandt.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 31304
Author: Lee, Vernon
Release Date: Feb 17, 2010
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Next Step in Religion: An Essay toward the Coming Renaissance

The purpose of this book is positive and constructive, although it may
not at first appear such to the reader whose inherited beliefs are
freely challenged. But let the reader ponder the fact that the deepest
spiritual life has always concerned itself with the appreciation and
maintenance of values. He who acknowledges, and wishes to further,
human values cannot be said to be irreligious or unspiritual.

The center of gravity of religion has been openly changing for some
time now from supernaturalism to what may best be called a humanistic
naturalism. The history of this change is traced in many of the
chapters of the book. There have been many steps forward in the past,
for every age must possess its own religion, a religion concordant with
its knowledge and expressive of its problems and aims. The sincerity
and adequacy with which this necessary task is done measures the
spiritual greatness of the particular age.

I have called the book The Next Step in Religion because the time is
ripe for one of the great steps forward. So much is this
the case that Friday evening of each week during the amusement season
is set apart by them in all the settlements throughout Mormondom for
their dance night. Their dances are generally under the supervision of
the presiding bishop and are invariably opened with prayer or
invocation, and closed or dismissed in the same manner, with a brief
return of thanks to the Almighty for the good time they have enjoyed.
It is scarcely to be wondered at that Salt Lake has the enviable
distinction of being the best show town of its population in the
United States, and when we say that, we may as well say in the whole
world. It is a well established fact that Salt Lake spends more money
per capita in the theatre than any city in our country.
Such a social condition among a strictly religious people is not
little peculiar, and is due, largely, to the fact that Brigham Young
was himself fond of the dance and also of the theatre. He could "shake
a leg" with the best of them, and loved to lead the fair matrons and
maidens of his flock forth into its giddy, bewildering mazes. Certain
round dances, the waltz and polka, were always barred at dances
Brigham Young attended, and only the old-fashioned quadrilles and
cotillions and an occasional reel like Sir Roger de Coverly or the
Money Musk were tolerated by the great Mormon leader.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 35565
Author: Lindsay, John S. What is the reason that it hears
nothing, or next to nothing, about the English drama? Your first impulse
is, perhaps, to make answerBecause there is no such thing! A
conclusive reason, and one dispensing with the need of any other, were it
true. But is it true? As it seems to me, it was true some thirty years
ago, but is true no longer.
And, indeed, were there no English drama at the moment at which I write,
this in itself would be a phenomenon well worth studying, a problem that
it would be interesting to solve. The understanding of the miscarriages of
the mind, of the ineffectual but not wholly vain endeavours, the
frustrated efforts of Life, contains for the critic, just as it does for
the follower of any other science, the most fruitful of lessons, the most
strangely suggestive of all spectacles. Were there no English drama, we
should have to seek for the reasonspsychological, social, stheticwhy
the Anglo-Saxon race, which produced a Shakespeare at a time when it
counted a bare three millions and covered a mere patch of ground, should
now be able to produce but[Pg 32] clowns and dancers, when it is forty times as
numerous, and has spread itself throughout the world.
But, as a matter of fact, these premises would be false. There is an
English drama. The demand for it has been felt, and the supply is
forthcoming. Or, rather, it has come. It is a strenuous youngster,
determined to keep alive, bearing up pluckily, if with trouble, against
all the maladies of childhood, against the dangers of evil influencesthe
brutal roughness of some, and the undue tenderness of others. Its growth
is slow and laborious; it recalls in no way that marvellous development of
the early drama, which, towards the end of the sixteenth century, passed
almost in a breath from the hesitating and halting speech of youth into
the rich utterance of full maturity. Here we still see doubt, uncertainty,
confusion. The struggle slackens at times. Improvement is followed by
lamentable relapse. To youth succeeds manhood, with
its worldly prudence: then we are taught to take nothing, not even
happiness, upon trust; to investigate until we are lost in the intricacies
of detail; and to credit our judgment for what is due only to our coldness
and apathy. We lose all sympathy for the past; the future is the subject
      of our anxious speculation; caution and re serve are our guardian angels;
and if the heart still throb with a fond emotion, we stifle it with what
speed we may, as detrimental to our interests, and unworthy our new-born
intelligence and philosophy. A short acquaintance with the world will
convince the most sanguine that this stage is not the happiest; that
ambition and mercenary cares make up the tumultuous scene; and though
necessity compel a temporary submission, it is good to escape from the
toils, and breathe a purer air. This brings us to another period, when
reflection has taught us self-knowledge, and we are no longer overwise in
our own esteem. Then returns something of the simplicity that
characterised our early days. We welcome old friends; have recourse to old
amusements, and the fictions that enchained our youthful fancy resume
      their wonted spell.

We remember the time when just emerging from boyhood, we affected a
disdain for the past. We had put on the man, and no urchin that put on for
the first time his holiday suit, felt more inexpressible self-complacency.
We had roared at pantomime, and gaped with delight at the mysteries of
melodramebut now becoming too sober to be amused, puerile!

ridiculous! were the critical anathemas that fulminated from our
newly-imbibed absolute wisdom! It might be presumption to say that we have
since grown wiser; certain it is, we are become less pleased with
ourselves, and consequently more willing to be pleased.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 46331
Author: Daniel, George
Release Date: Jul 19, 2014
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Illustrator: Cruikshank, Robert, 1789-1856 , Leech, John, 1817-1864

Merrie England in the Olden Time, Vol. 2

My friends,continued
Mr. Bosky, after an approving smack of the lips, and Thanks, my
kind mistress! many happy returns of St. Bartlemy! had testified the
ballad-singer's hearty relish and gratitude for the refreshing draught
over which he had just suspended his well-seasoned nose, *never
      may the mouths be stopped

(except with a cup of good liquor) of these musical itinerants,
from whose doggrel a curious history of men and manners might be gleaned,
to humour the anti-social disciples of those pious publicans who
      substituted their nasal twang for the solemn harmony of cathedral music;
who altered St. Peter's phrase, 'the Bishop of your souls,' into 'the
Elder (!!) of your souls;' for 'thy kingdom come,' brayed 'thy
Commonwealth come!' and smuggled the water into their rum-puncheons, which
they called wrestling with the spirit, and making the enemy
      weaker! The two editions
already published have been for many years out of
print, and the first is so rare that copies of it bring a
high price whenever they occur for sale. And this
demand is not a mere bibliographical accident, for
the book has held for many years a recognised position
as the standard popular history of the English
stage. The admirable work of Genest, indispensable
as it is to every writer on theatrical history, and to
every serious student of the stage, is in no sense a
popular work, and is, indeed, rather a collection of
facts towards a history than a history itself.
In preparing this new edition every effort has
been made to add to its interest by the introduction
of portraits and other illustrations, and to its
authority as a book of reference, by correcting
those errors which are scarcely to be avoided by[vi]
a writer working among the confused, inaccurate,
and contradictory documents of theatrical history.
No one who has not ventured into this maze can
conceive the difficulty of keeping the true path, and
I can imagine nothing better calculated to sap one's
self-confidence than the task of noting the false
turnings made by such a writer as Dr. Doran. I
can hardly hope that my own work, light as it is
in comparison with his, will be found free from
sins of omission, and even of commission.
My principle has been to pass no error, however
trifling; but, at the same time, I have not thought
myself entitled to discuss matters of opinion, or to
criticise, either directly or indirectly, Dr. Doran's
treatment of his subject. Thus it would be easy to
supplement the information regarding the ancient
theatres and the theatre of Shakspeare's time contained
in the first and second chapters; but, as Dr.
Doran obviously intended that his real work should
begin with the Restoration Theatres, I have not
interfered with his scheme.
