It
has been delayed by a crowd of causes, by a temporary
loss of strength, by enforced absence from England, by
other occupations and interruptions of various kinds.
I mention this only because of the effect which I fear
it has had on the book itself. It has been impossible
to make it, what a book should, if possible, be, the
result of one continuous effort. The mere fact that the
kindness of the publishers allowed the early part to be
printed some years back has, I fear, led to some
repetition and even contradiction. A certain change
of plan was found unavoidable. It proved impossible
to go through the whole volume according
to the method of the earlier chapters. Instead of
treating Europe as a whole, I found it needful to divide
it into several large geographical groups. The result
is that each of the later chapters has had to go over
again some small amount of ground which had been
already gone over in the earlier chapters. In some
cases later lights have led to some changes of view
or expression. I have marked these, as far as I{i}
could, in the Additions and Corrections. If in any
case I have failed to do so, the later statement is the
one which should be relied on.
I hope that I have made the object of the work
clear in the Introductory Chapter. It is really a very
humble one. It aims at little more than tracing out
the extent of various states at different times, and at
attempting to place the various changes in their due
relation to one another and to their causes. I am not,
strictly speaking, writing history. I have little to do
with the internal affairs of any country. I have looked
at events mainly with reference to their effect on the
European map. This has led to a reversal of what to
many will seem the natural order of things. In a
constitutional history of Europe, our own island would
claim the very first place. In my strictly geographical
point of view, I believe I am right in giving it the last.
I of course assume in the reader a certain elementary
knowledge of European history, at least as
much as may be learned from my own General Sketch.
Names and things which have been explained there I
have not thought it needful to explain again. I need
hardly say that I found myself far more competent to
deal with some parts of the work than with others.
No one can take an equal interest in, or have an
equal knowledge of, all branches of so wide a subject.
Some parts of the book will represent real original
research; others must be dealt with in a far less{ii}
thorough way, and will represent only knowledge got
up for the occasion. In such cases the reader will
doubtless find out the difference for himself. But
I have felt my own deficiencies most keenly in the
German part. No part of European history is to me
more attractive than the early history of the German
kingdom as such. No part is to me less attractive than
the endless family divisions and unions of the smaller
German states.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 61375
Author: Freeman, Edward A. In this fascinating New York Times bestseller--fully revised to reflect the events of our current world--award-winning journalist Tim Marshall uses ten maps of crucial regions to explain how physical landscapes influence geopolitical strategies of world leaders, showing "how geography shapes not just history but destiny" (Newsweek).

Maps have always captivated us, offering insights not only into our destinations but also into the broader world. Yet, when it comes to understanding geopolitics, many overlook the fundamental role of geography. All leaders of nations are constrained by geography--their choices limited by mountains, rivers, deserts, and seas. Now in "one of the best books about geopolitics" (The Evening Standard)--journalist Tim Marshall reveals the profound influence of geography on global politics, offering a compelling lens through which to understand the seismic shifts reshaping international relations.

Through ten up-to-date maps, Marshall explores the landscapes and climates that constrain and empower nations across key parts of the globe, from Russia's vast tundras to China's mountainous borders, Africa's deserts to the Arctic's shifting ice. Taking a deep dive into the key flashpoints defining our world today--including the Russia-Ukraine war and the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict--Marshall unpacks the shifting dynamics of the New Middle East, China's bold moves to expand its global influence, including its growing interest in Taiwan, and how America's pivot to the Pacific is reshaping alliances. And Europe's tilt towards extreme politics, increased defense spending, and the future role of NATO, paint a dramatic picture of a continent in flux.

An essential read for anyone interested in the interplay between geography and global politics, this fully revised edition of Prisoners of Geography offers a vivid look at the forces driving our increasingly complex world.

Author: Tim Marshall
Publisher: Scribner Book Company
Published: 10/11/2016
Pages: 464
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.70lbs
Size: 8.90h x 5.90w x 1.10d
ISBN: 9781501121470

About the Author
Tim Marshall is a leading authority on foreign affairs with more than thirty years of reporting experience. For millennia, these four directions have been foundational to our travel, navigation, and exploration, and are central to the imaginative, moral, and political geography of virtually every culture in the world. Yet they are far more subjective--and sometimes contradictory--than we might realize.

Four Points of the Compass leads us on a journey of directional discovery. Societies have understood and defined directions in very different ways based on their locations in time and space. Historian Jerry Brotton reveals why Hebrew culture privileges east; why Renaissance Europeans began drawing north at the top of their maps; why early Islam revered the south; why the Aztecs used five color-coded cardinal directions; and why no societies, primitive or modern, have ever orientated themselves westwards. In doing so, politically-loaded but widely used terms such as the "Middle East," the "Global South," the "West Indies," the "Orient," and even the "western world" take on new meanings. Who decided on these terms and what do they mean for geopolitics? How have directions like "east" and "west" taken on the status of cultural identities--or more accurately stereotypes?

Yet today, because of GPS capability, cardinal points are less relevant. Online, we place ourselves at the center of the map as little blue dots moving across geospatial apps; we have become the most important compass point, though in the process we've disconnected ourselves from the natural world. Imagining what future changes technology may impose, Jerry Brotton skillfully reminds us how crucial the four cardinal directions have been to everyone who has ever walked our planet. For anyone interested in history, geography, or surprising new ways to think about the world at large, Four Points of the Compass will be a stimulating experience.

Author: Jerry Brotton
Publisher: Atlantic Monthly Press
Published: 11/12/2024
Pages: 224
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 0.95lbs
Size: 8.40h x 5.50w x 1.10d
ISBN: 9780802163684

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 08/01/2024
Booklist 11/01/2024 pg. 19

About the Author
Jerry Brotton is a professor of English and History at the University of London. In this, his fifth book, Macfarlane brilliantly explores the linguistic and literary terrain of the British archipelago, from the Shetlands to Cornwall and from Cumbria to Suffolk, offering themed glossaries of hundreds of these rare, deeply local, poetical terms, organized by such geographical terrains as flatlands, uplands, waterlands, coastlands, woodlands, and underlands. Interspersed with this archive of place words are biographical essays in which Macfarlane writes of his favorite authors who have paid close attention to the natural world and who embody in their own work the huge richness of place language--from Barry Lopez and John Muir to Nan Shepard, J. Jackson III focuses on the stretch of coast from Mobile Bay and Gulf Shores, Alabama, east to Panama City, Florida--an area known as the "Redneck Riviera." Jackson explores the rise of this area as a vacation destination for the lower South's middle- and working-class families following World War II, the building boom of the 1950s and 1960s, and the emergence of the Spring Break "season." From the late sixties through 1979, severe hurricanes destroyed many small motels, cafes, bars, and early cottages that gave the small beach towns their essential character. A second building boom ensued in the 1980s dominated by high-rise condominiums and large resort hotels. Jackson traces the tensions surrounding the gentrification of the late 1980s and 1990s and the collapse of the housing market in 2008. It has long been seen as the frontier between Western Civilization and the rest, but never definitively part of either. Despite being conquered by empires--Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Hapsburg Spain--it remains uniquely apart. The island's story maps a mosaic that mixes the story of myth and wars, maritime empires and reckless crusades, and a people who refuse to be ruled.

In this riveting, rich history Jamie Mackay peels away the layers of this most mysterious of islands. This story finds its origins in ancient myth but has been reinventing itself across centuries: in conquest and resistance. Inseparable from these political and social developments are the artefacts of the nation's cultural patrimony--ancient amphitheaters, Arab gardens, Baroque Cathedrals, as well as great literature such as Giuseppe di Lampedusa's masterpiece The Leopard, and the novels and plays of Luigi Pirandello. Orange County is more than the well-known images on orange crate labels, the high-profile amusement parks of Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm, or the beaches. It is also a unique site of agricultural and suburban history, political conservatism in a liberal state, and more diversity and discordance than its pop-cultural images show. It is a space of important agricultural labor disputes, segregation and resistance to segregation, privatization and the struggle for public space, politicized religions, Cold War global migrations, vibrant youth cultures, and efforts for environmental justice. Memorably, Ronald Reagan called Orange County the place "where all the good Republicans go to die," but it is also the place where many working-class immigrants have come to live and work in its agricultural, military-industrial, and tourist service economies.

Orange County is the fifth-most populous county in America. If it were a city, it would be the nation's third-largest city; if it were a state, its population would make it larger than twenty-one other states. It attracts 42 million tourists annually. Yet Orange County tends to be a chapter or two squeezed into guidebooks to Los Angeles or Disneyland. Mainstream guidebooks focus on Orange County's amusement parks and wealthy coastal communities, with side trips to palatial shopping malls. These guides skip over Orange County's most heterogeneous half--the inland space, where most of its oranges were grown alongside oil derricks that kept the orange groves heated. Existing guidebooks render invisible the diverse people who have labored there. A People's Guide to Orange County questions who gets to claim Orange County's image, exposing the extraordinary stories embedded in the ordinary landscape.

Author: Elaine Lewinnek,Gustavo Arellano,Thuy Vo Dang
Publisher: University of California Press
Published: 01/25/2022
Pages: 256
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 1.05lbs
Size: 8.90h x 5.91w x 0.87d
ISBN: 9780520299955

About the Author
Elaine Lewinnek is professor of American Studies at California State University, Fullerton, and author of The Working Man's Reward: Chicago's Early Suburbs and the Roots of American Sprawl.

Gustavo Arellano is a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, former editor of OC Weekly, and author of the books Orange County: A Personal History, Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America, and ¡Ask A Mexican!

Thuy Vo Dang is curator for the Southeast Asian Archive at University of California, Irvine, and coauthor of Vietnamese in Orange County.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_7ac6e847-9daf-4699-bc99-f8be2c802596.jpg?v=1760020226
too-high-and-too-steep-reshaping-seattles-topography-9780295999401
Too High and Too Steep: Reshaping Seattle's Topography

Residents and visitors in today's Seattle would barely recognize the landscape that its founding settlers first encountered. Each of us, too, is a landscape inscribed by memory and loss. One life-defining lesson Lauret Savoy learned as a young girl was this: the American land did not hate. This edition contains more than 40 maps and illustrations, reproduced based on Ptolemy's original manuscript. It remains a fascinating read for students of scientific history and Greek influence. CLAUDIUS PTOLEMY (A.D. 90- A.D. 168) was a poet, mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, and geographer who wrote in Greek, though he was a Roman citizen. He is most well-known for three scientific treatises he wrote on astronomy, astrology, and geography, respectively titled Almagest, Apotelesmatika, and Geographia. But even residents on this idyllic California coast may not realize its full history. Monterey began as a natural paradise, but became the poster child for industrial devastation in John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, and is now one of the most celebrated shorelines in the world.

It is a remarkable story of life, death, and revival--told here for the first time in all its stunning color and bleak grays. The Death and Life of Monterey Bay begins in the eighteenth century when Spanish and French explorers encountered a rocky shoreline brimming with life--raucous sea birds, abundant sea otters, barking sea lions, halibut the size of wagon wheels, waters thick with whales. A century and a half later, many of the sea creatures had disappeared, replaced by sardine canneries that sickened residents with their stench but kept the money flowing. When the fish ran out and the climate turned, the factories emptied and the community crumbled. But today, both Monterey's economy and wildlife are resplendent. How did it happen?

The answer is deceptively simple: through the extraordinary acts of ordinary people. The Death and Life of Monterey Bay is the biography of a place, but also of the residents who reclaimed it. Monterey is thriving because of an eccentric mayor who wasn't afraid to use pistols, axes, or the force of law to protect her coasts. A prospector who had been swept up in the Klondike Gold Rush, Darrell later made his name as an expert guide, trapper, and restless wanderer who ventured where few others dared. At a time when travel by dogsled in the North was the norm, Darrell became legendary for traversing thousands of kilometres alone and on foot; ranging over mountains and across windswept tundra from Alaska to Hudson Bay. During his epic journeys, he helped rescue sailors trapped in sea ice, led Mounties on their patrols, and even guided some of the era's most famous explorers. Roald Amundsen, the first person to reach the South Pole, held Darrell in awe, remarking once that with men like him, he could go to the moon. Contemporaries regarded Darrell as the hardiest, most competent explorer of his day. Despite clues reported by Inuit trappers and Mounted Police inquiries, his fate remains a mystery. While his disappearance sparked headlines around the world, Darrell's name would soon also vanish from the history books, ironically, just as surely as he had in the wild.

Yet Darrell left behind a trail of letters, journals, and hand-drawn maps. With these faded clues and his zeal for adventure, Adam Shoalts retraces Darrell's forgotten routes through the wilderness, searching for cabin ruins and old campsites. He unearths water-stained records and tracks down elderly individuals in the hopes that they might remember someone who'd known Darrell.
