We must learn what these are, in other words, we must begin
with a bibliography of the various documents. Then we must divide them
into their various classes, for different classes of inscriptions are
of varying degrees of accuracy. Finally, we must study in detail for
each reign the sources, discover which of the various documents or
groups of documents are the most nearly contemporaneous with the
events they narrate, and on these, and on these alone, base our
history of the period.
To the less narrowly technical reader, the development of the
historical sense in one of the earlier culture peoples has an interest
all its own. The historical writings of the Assyrians form one of the
most important branches of their literature. Indeed, it may be claimed
with much truth that it is the most characteristically Assyrian of
them all. [Footnote: This study is a source investigation and not a
bibliography. The only royal inscriptions studied in detail are those
presenting source problems. Minor inscriptions of these rulers are
accorded no more space than is absolutely necessary, and rulers who
have not given us strictly historical inscriptions are generally
passed in silence. The bibliographical notes are condensed as much as
possible and make no pretense of completeness, though they will
probably be found the most complete yet printed. Every possible care
has been taken to make the references accurate, but the fact that many
were consulted in the libraries of Cornell University, University of
Chicago, Columbia University, and the University of Pennsylvania, and
are thus inaccessible at the time when the work is passing through the
press, leaves some possibility of error. Dr. B. B. Charles, Instructor
in Semitics in the University of Pennsylvania, has kindly verified
those where error has seemed at all likely. For the English speaking
reader, practically all the inscriptions for the earlier half of the
history are found in Budge-Kjing, Annals of the Kings of
Assyria. 1. For the remainder, Harper, Assyrian and Babylonian
Literature, is adequate, though somewhat out of date. Rogers,
Cuneiform Parallels to the, Old Testament, gives an up to date
translation of those passages which throw light on the Biblical
writings. Other works cited are generally of interest only to
specialists and the most common are cited by abbreviations which will
be found at the close of the study.]
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 6559
Author: Olmstead, A. Documents are the traces which have
been left by the thoughts and actions of men of former times. Of these
thoughts and actions, however, very few leave any visible traces, and
these traces, when there are any, are seldom durable; an accident is
enough to efface them. Now every thought and every action that has left
no visible traces, or none but what have since disappeared, is lost for
history; is as though it had never been. For want of documents the
history of immense periods in the past of humanity is destined to remain
for ever unknown. For there is no substitute for documents: no
documents, no history.
In order to draw legitimate inferences from a document to the fact of
which it is the trace, numerous precautions are requisite which will be
indicated in18 the sequel. But it is clear that, prior to any critical
examination or interpretation of documents, the question presents itself
whether there are any documents at all, how many there are, and where
they are. If I undertake to deal with a point of history,[22] of
whatever nature, my first step will be to ascertain the place or places
where the documents necessary for its treatment, if any such exist, are
to be found. The search for and the collection of documents is thus a
part, logically the first and most important part, of the historian's
craft. In Germany it has received the convenient, because short, name of
Heuristik. Is there any need to prove the capital importance of
Heuristic? Assuredly not. It is obvious that if it is neglected, if the
student does not, before he sets to work on a point of history, place
himself in a position to command all accessible sources of information,
his risk (no small one at the best) of working upon insufficient data is
quite unnecessarily increased: works of erudition or history constructed
in accordance with the rules of the most exact method have been
vitiated, or even rendered worthless, by the accidental circumstance
that the author was unacquainted with the documents by which those which
he had within reach, and with which he was content, might have been
illustrated, supplemented, or discredited. The scholars and historians
of to-day, standing, as they19 do, in other respects on an equality with
their predecessors of the last few centuries, are only enabled to
surpass them by their possession of more abundant means of
information.[23] Heuristic is, in fact, easier to-day than it used to
be, although the honest Wagner has still good grounds for saying:
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 29637
Author: Langlois, Charles Victor
Release Date: Aug 8, 2009
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Contributor (Author): Seignobos, Charles, 1854-1942

Translator: Berry, George Godfrey, 1867-

Problems in Greek history

Even since the following sheets were printed, the researches into
prehistoric Greek life, and its relation both to the East, to the
Homeric poems, and to the Greece we know in the 7th century B.C., have
progressed, and we are beginning to see some light through the mist. I
can refer the reader to two books, of which one has just been published
in English. The other, the second edition of Busolt's History of
Greece, though still in the press, will be accessible to those that
read German in a few weeks. I prefer to cite the formerSchuchardt's
account of Schliemann's Excavationsin its English form, as it is
there enriched with an Introduction, and apparently a revision of the
text, by Mr. Walter Leaf. This is the first systematic attempt to bring
into a short compass, with the illustrations, and with some regard to
chronology, the great body of facts discovered and hastily consigned to
many large volumes by the gifted discoverer. There is, moreover, a
separate chapter (vi.) which gathers these facts under a theory, not to
speak of the acute and cautious criticism of Mr. Leaf, which will be
found in the [vi]Introduction to the volume. The Introduction to Busolt's
History, of which (by the author's courtesy) I have seen some 130
pages, contains a complete critical discussion of the same evidence.
Here is the general result in Busolt's own exposition (G. G. 2nd ed.
pp. 113 sq.): 'The Homeric culture is younger than the Mykenan, it is
also simpler and in better proportion. The former had come to use iron
for arms and tools, the latter is strictly in the age of bronze[vi:1].
If the culture of the Epics does show a lower stage of technical
development, we perceive also a decline of oriental influences. In many
respects, in matters of interment, dress and armour, the epic age
contrasts with the Mykenan, but in many points we find transitions and
threads which unite the two civilizations. The Homeric palace shows
remarkable agreements with those of Myken and Tiryns. The Homeric
heroes fight with sword, spear, and bow, like the Mykenan. Splendid
vases, too, and furniture, such as occur [vii]within the range of the
Mykenan culture, agree even in details with the descriptions of the
Epos. The Epos, too, knows Myken "rich in gold," and the "wealthy"
Odeomenos. In general the homes of the Mykenan culture are prominent in
the Iliad. The splendour of the Mykenan epoch was therefore still fresh
in the memory of the olians and Ionians when the Epos arose.
'If the life thus pictured in the Epos thus shows many kindred features
to that of Myken, the Doric life of the Peloponnesus stands in harsh
contrast. Not in strong fortresses, but in open camps, do we find the
Dorian conquerors. The nobles do not fight on chariots in the van, but
serried infantry decides the combat[vii:1].
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 36354
Author: Mahaffy, J. Since they formed part of a general scheme, their
collection in book form presented no difficulties. This volume has
appeared in German under the title Zur Theorie und Geschichte der
Historiographie (Tbingen, Mohr, 1915).
The description of the volume as forming the fourth of my Philosophy
of the Spirit requires some explanation; for it does not really form
a new systematic part of the philosophy, and is rather to be looked
upon as a deepening and amplification of the theory of historiography,
already outlined in certain chapters of the second part, namely the
Logic. But the problem of historical comprehension is that toward
which pointed all my investigations as to the modes of the spirit,
their distinction and unity, their truly concrete life, which is
development and history, and as to historical thought, which is the
self-consciousness of this life. In a certain sense, therefore, this
resumption of the treatment of historiography on the completion of the
wide circle, this drawing forth of it from the limits of the first
treatment[Pg 6] of the subject, was the most natural conclusion that could
be given to the whole work. He wrote, indeed, nearly two thousand years
ago; but he wrote, not of times then long past, but of things which were
done under his own eyes, and of his own deeds. And he wrote of countries
with which we are familiar,of our Britain, for instance, which he
twice invaded, of peoples not so far remote but that we can identify
them with our neighbours and ourselves; and he so wrote as to make us
feel that we are reading actual history, and not romance. The simplicity
of the narratives which he has left is their chief characteristic, if
not their greatest charm. We feel sure that the circumstances which he
tells us did occur, and that they occurred very nearly as he tells them.
He deals with those great movements in Europe from which have{2} sprung,
and to which we can trace, the present political condition of the
nations. Interested as the scholar, or the reader of general literature,
may be in the great deeds of the heroes of Greece, and in the burning
words of Greek orators, it is almost impossible for him to connect to
any intimate and thoroughly-trusted link the fortunes of Athens, or
Sparta, or Macedonia, with our own times and our own position. It is
almost equally difficult to do so in regard to the events of Rome and
the Roman power before the time of Csar. We cannot realise and bring
home to ourselves the Punic Wars or the Social War, the Scipios and the
Gracchi, or even the contest for power between Marius and Sulla, as we
do the Gallic Wars and the invasion of Britain, by which the
civilisation of Rome was first carried westwards, or the great civil
wars, the Bellum Civile,by which was commenced a line of emperors
continued almost down to our own days, and to which in some degree may
be traced the origin and formation of almost every existing European
nation. It is no doubt true that if we did but know the facts correctly,
we could refer back every political and social condition of the present
day to the remotest period of mans existence; but the interest fails us
when the facts become doubtful, and when the mind begins to fear that
history is mixed with romance. Herodotus is so mythic that what delight
we have in his writings comes in a very slight degree from any desire on
our part to form a continuous chain from the days of which he wrote down
to our own. Between the marvels of Herodotus and the facts of Csar
there is a great interval,{3} from which have come down to us the works of
various noble historians; but with Csar it seems that that certainty
commences which we would wish to regard as the distinguishing
characteristic of modern history.
It must be remembered from the beginning that Csar wrote only of what
he did or of what he caused to be done himself. At least he only so
wrote in the two works of his which remain to us. We are told that he
produced much besides his Commentaries, among other works, a poem, but
the two Commentaries are all of his that we have. The former, in seven
books, relates the facts of his seven first campaigns in Gaul for seven
consecutive years; those campaigns in which he reduced the nations
living between the Rhine, the Rhone, the Mediterranean, the Pyrenees,
and the sea which we now call the British Channel.[1] The latter
Commentary relates the circumstances of the civil war in which he
contended for power against Pompey, his former colleague, with Crassus,
in the first triumvirate, and established that empire to which Augustus
succeeded after a second short-lived triumvirate between himself and
Lepidus and Antony.
It is the object of this little volume to describe Csars Commentaries
for the aid of those who do not read Latin, and not to write Roman
history; but it may be well to say something, in a few introductory
lines, of the life and character of our author. We are all more or less
familiar with the name of Julius Csar. In our early days we learned
that he{4} was the first of those twelve Roman emperors with whose names
it was thought right to burden our young memories; and we were taught to
understand that when he began to reign there ceased to exist that form
of republican government in which two consuls elected annually did in
truth preside over the fortunes of the empire. There had first been
seven kings, whose names have also been made familiar to us,then the
consuls, and after them the twelve Csars, of whom the great Julius was
the first. So much we all know of him; and we know, too, that he was
killed in the Capitol by conspirators just as he was going to become
emperor, although this latter scrap of knowledge seems to be
paradoxically at variance with the former. In addition to this we know
that he was a great commander and conqueror and writer, who did things
and wrote of them in the veni, vidi, vici stylesaying of himself, I
came, I saw, I conquered. We know that a great Roman army was intrusted
to him, and that he used this army for the purpose of establishing his
own power in Rome by taking a portion of it over the Rubicon, which
little river separated the province which he had been appointed to
govern from the actual Roman territory within which, as a military
servant of the magistrates of the republic, he had no business to appear
as a general at the head of his army. So much we know; and in the
following very short memoir of the great commander and historian, no
effort shall be made,as has been so frequently and so painfully done
for us in late years,to upset the teachings of our youth, and to{5}
prove that the old lessons were wrong. They were all fairly accurate,
and shall now only be supplemented by a few further circumstances which
were doubtless once learned by all school-boys and school-girls, but
which some may perhaps have forgotten since those happy days.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 55926
Author: Trollope, Anthony
Release Date: Nov 9, 2017
Format: eBook
Language: English

Le cronache italiane nel Medio Evo

Inteso a far noti popolarmente i cronisti italiani
del Medio Evo, io ho cercato di togliere
ogni ingombro di erudizione da questo libro e
presentarlo ai lettori il pi semplice e spedito di
citazioni che si potesse. The second
of themthe Process of Historical Proof, was, in fact, a sequel to
the firstthe History of the Transmission of Ancient Books to Modern
Times. In now reprinting the two, as one, it has not been difficult
to give continuity to the whole: this has been effected, partly by
removing from each volume portions which seemed to be of secondary
importance, and to be not closely related to the principal intention
of the work; and partly by introducing several entire chapters of new
material; and by the insertion of additional paragraphs throughout.
What is new in this volume occurs chiefly in the mid portions of it,
and at the end.
In the course of this thirty years, the labours of critics, combined
with the researches of learned travellers,[Pg iv] have thrown much light upon
all parts of the subject which is compendiously treated in this volume.
No reader who is fully informed in this department will need to be told
that, within the limits of a volume such as this, nothing more than the
most concise mention of these recent labours and researches could be
attempted: they are referred to only in the way of suggestion and of
sample. At the first, the two books above mentioned were intended to
find a place in a course of general educational reading; and it is only
as coming within the range of a purpose such as this, that the Reprint
is now offered to the public.
In excluding from the Reprint some chapters of the two volumes which
related expressly to the Biblical argument, or Christian Evidences,
I have been influenced by several reasonssuch as these: The first
of them is this, that what may be regarded as the religious
aspect of the general subject has no direct claim to be included in
the treatment of it. In the next place, I have believedand think
so decisivelythat, for the very purpose of bringing the Biblical
argument home, with the greatest force, to the convictions of
intelligent young persons, the subject should be fully understood
in its broadest aspect. When it is thus[Pg v] presented, and when it is
thus understood, well-informed and ingenuous persons will see and
feel, irresistibly, that, as compared with any other mass of facts
belonging to literary antiquarianism, and to historic evidence, the
Biblical evidence is many times more ample, and various, and is more
unquestionably certain, than even the best and the surest of those
masses of facts.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 67778
Author: Taylor, Isaac
Release Date: Apr 5, 2022
Format: eBook
Language: English
Publisher: Jackson and Walford
Publication Date: 1859
Publisher Country: United Kingdom

How to write the history of a parish

Some of the Clergy of the Diocese of Lincoln are
responsible for the issue of this booklet. Du Bois and Annette Gordon-Reed, to trace how generations of Americans have wrestled with the paradox of slavery in a country founded on principles of liberty and equality.

As the debate over the place of slavery in our history rages on, Making Sense of Slavery shows that what is truly central to American history is this very debate itself.

Author: Scott Spillman
Publisher: Basic Books
Published: 03/04/2025
Pages: 448
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.45lbs
Size: 9.30h x 6.30w x 1.60d
ISBN: 9781541602090

Review Citation(s):
Library Journal 02/01/2025 pg. 80
Kirkus Reviews 02/01/2025

About the Author
Scott Spillman received his PhD in history from Stanford University. The critics have no evidence for their claims, he asserts. The case for colonialism is robust no matter which colonizer or colonized area one examines. She snorted and said, "Prove it!" Up to then, I had never doubted this. While all Christian churches claim their spiritual beliefs began with Jesus over 2000 years ago-this church claims they also historically began circa 2000 years ago. Further, they assert their church is God's only true/right church on earth and all others are false churches. When the church leadership was unable to prove this line of succession, I decided to independently investigate. This was no easy task since the church intentionally publishes no records and rarely assumes any official name. However, the church has been identified with various nicknames by the press and in publications. Currently, the moniker most frequently applied, that of Two by Twos (aka 2x2s), is used by the US Library of Congress and Wikipedia. Despite the scarcity of written material and academic research, I eventually located its deeply buried roots in Ireland. To my surprise, it turned out to be a little more than 100 years old and was founded at the turn of the 20th century by William Irvine. Over the next 25 years, my husband and I made two visits to the UK and Ireland where we unearthed numerous historical documents spanning over a century, including letters, testimonials, accounts, journals, newspaper articles, court cases, photographs, family trees, etc. Currently, my book is the only book in print that explores this exclusive ahistorical church from its inception to the present. It provides insight into its development, evolution, pivotal events, key figures, traditions, teachings, and the adoption of the Living Witness Doctrine. Hidden scandals, excommunications, exoduses, tragedies, betrayals, riots, and the expelling of the founder, Wm. Irvine, his right-hand man, Edward Cooney, and their accompanying divisions are presented. I am dedicated to protecting, preserving and sharing the facts surrounding the obscure past of this church and its founder. My hope is that my book will pave the way to its physical history becoming common knowledge, as well as the basis for lessons learned. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it (Sir Winston Churchill).I am passionate about Truth and Justice. The original question that started my investigation was "Who started your church?" Other churches are open about their history and founders. My purpose in writing this book is to empower others by sharing the knowledge I wish I had known. Truth never damages a cause that is just (Mahatma Gandhi).I grew up living on the Jackson, Mississippi convention grounds, a facility used for annual church conferences. In 1990, after 40 years involvement, I disassociated from this church. Currently, I reside in North Texas, am married, have three children and four grandchildren. I enjoy cooking, flower gardening and have been a voracious reader all my life. My husband (and soulmate), Chester Ehrig, has wholeheartedly supported me and contributed to this book, along with countless other valuable volunteers and sources. He was born around 490 BC in Halicarnassus, on the south-west coast of Asia Minor. He seems to have travelled widely throughout the Mediterranean world, including Egypt, Africa, the area around the Black Sea and throughout many Greek city-states, of both the mainland and the islands. A sojourn in Athens is part of the traditional biography, and there he is said to have given public readings of his work and been friends with the playwright Sophocles. He is said also to have taken part in the founding of the colony of Thurii in Italy in 443 BC. He probably died at some time between 415 and 410 BC. His reputation has varied greatly, but for the ancients and many moderns he well deserves the title (first given to him by Cicero) of 'the Father of History'.

John Marincola was born in Philadelphia in 1954, and was educated at Swarthmore College, the University of Pennsylvania, and Brown University. Lee. From his southern childhood to his service in the U.S. Army, every part of his life reinforced the Lost Cause myth: that Lee was the greatest man who ever lived, and that the Confederates were underdogs who lost the Civil War with honor. Now, as a retired brigadier general and Professor Emeritus of History at West Point, his view has radically changed. From a soldier, a scholar, and a southerner, Ty Seidule believes that American history demands a reckoning.

In a unique blend of history and reflection, Seidule deconstructs the truth about the Confederacy--that its undisputed primary goal was the subjugation and enslavement of Black Americans--and directly challenges the idea of honoring those who labored to preserve that system and committed treason in their failed attempt to achieve it. Through the arc of Seidule's own life, as well as the culture that formed him, he seeks a path to understanding why the facts of the Civil War have remained buried beneath layers of myth and even outright lies--and how they embody a cultural gulf that separates millions of Americans to this day.

Part history lecture, part meditation on the Civil War and its fallout, and part memoir, Robert E. It outlines the enormous cultural changes that took place - from literacy to living standards, inequality and even the developing sense of self - thereby correcting misconceptions and presenting the period as a revolutionary age of fundamental importance in the development of the Western world.

Author: Ian Mortimer
Publisher: RosettaBooks
Published: 03/12/2024
Pages: 254
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.65lbs
Size: 8.00h x 5.25w x 1.00d
ISBN: 9780795301094
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_303a5560-1bf0-4c61-91c5-a72c7ff1d81b.jpg?v=1759995536
shakespeare-was-a-woman-and-other-heresies-how-doubting-the-bard-became-the-biggest-taboo-in-literature-9781982171278
Shakespeare Was a Woman and Other Heresies: How Doubting the Bard Became the Biggest Taboo in Literature
An "extraordinarily brilliant" and "pleasurably naughty" (André Aciman) investigation into the Shakespeare authorship question, exploring how doubting that William Shakespeare wrote his plays became an act of blasphemy...and who the Bard might really be.

The theory that Shakespeare may not have written the works that bear his name is the most horrible, unspeakable subject in the history of English literature. Whisking you from London to Stratford-Upon-Avon to Washington, DC, she pulls back the curtain to show how the forces of nationalism and empire, religion and mythmaking, gender and class have shaped our admiration for Shakespeare across the centuries. As she considers the writers and thinkers--from Walt Whitman to Sigmund Freud to Supreme Court justices--who have grappled with the riddle of the plays' origins, she explores who may perhaps have been hiding behind his name. A forgotten woman? A disgraced aristocrat? A government spy? In What Is Ancient History?, Walter Scheidel presents a compelling case for a new kind of ancient history--a global history that captures antiquity's pivotal role as a decisive phase in human development, one that provided the shared foundation of our world and continues to shape our lives today.

For Scheidel, ancient history is when the earliest versions of today's ways of life were created and spread--from farming, mining, and engineering to housing and transportation, cities and government, writing and belief systems. Transforming the planet, this process unfolded all over the world, in Eurasia, Africa, and the Americas, often at different times, sometimes haltingly but ultimately unstoppably. Yet it's rarely studied or taught that way. Since the eighteenth century, Western intellectuals have dismembered the ancient world, driven not only by their quest for professional expertise but also by nationalism, colonialism, racism, and the idealization of Greece and Rome. Specialized scholarship has fractured into numerous academic niches, obscuring broader patterns and dynamics and keeping us from understanding just how much humanity has long had in common.

The time has come, Scheidel argues, to put the ancient world back together--by moving beyond the limitations of Greco-Roman "classics," by systematically comparing ancient societies, and by exploring early exchanges and connections between them. With this work, he created the history of philosophy as a scientific study. He reveals philosophical theory as neither an accident nor an artificial construct, but as an exemplar of its age, fashioned by its antecedents and contemporary circumstances, and serving as a model for the future. The author himself appears to have regarded this book as a popular introduction to his philosophy as a whole, and it remains the most readable and accessible of all his philosophical writings.
Eschewing the methods of original history (written during the period in question) and reflective history (written after the period has passed), Hegel embraces philosophic history, which employs a priori philosophical thought to interpret history as a rational process. Reason rules history, he asserts, through its infinite freedom (being self-sufficient, it depends on nothing beyond its own laws and conclusions) and power (through which it forms its own laws). Hegel argues that all of history is caused and guided by a rational process, and God's seemingly unknowable plan is rendered intelligible through philosophy. Although his education was frequently interrupted by ill health, his knowledge was far-reaching. His brief career as an undergraduate at Magdalen College, Oxford, ended when he joined the Catholic Church. His father sent him to Lausanne, in Switzerland, where, while studying Greek and French for the next five years, he re-joined the Protestant Church. In 1761 he published his Essai sur l'étude de la Littérature; the English version appeared in 1764. Meanwhile, Gibbon served as a captain in the Hampshire Militia until 1763, when he returned to the Continent. It was while he was in Rome in 1764 that he first conceived the work that was eventually to become The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

In 1774, after the death of his father, Gibbon settled in London and was elected to Parliament where he sat for the next eight years, although he never once spoke in the Commons. He also took his place among the literary circles of London. The first volume of his famous History was published in 1776; it was highly praised for its learning and style but incurred some censure for its treatment of the early Christians. The second and third volumes appeared in 1781 and the final three, which were written in Lausanne, in 1788. Is there such a thing as historical truth? Is history a science? One of the most accomplished historians at work today, John Lewis Gaddis, answers these and other questions in this short, witty, and humane book. The Landscape of History provides a searching look at the historian's craft, as well as a strong argument for why a historical consciousness should matter to us today.

Gaddis points out that while the historical method is more sophisticated than most historians realize, it doesn't require unintelligible prose to explain. Like cartographers mapping landscapes, historians represent what they can never replicate. In doing so, they combine the techniques of artists, geologists, paleontologists, and evolutionary biologists. Their approaches parallel, in intriguing ways, the new sciences of chaos, complexity, and criticality. They don't much resemble what happens in the social sciences, where the pursuit of independent variables functioning with static systems seems increasingly divorced from the world as we know it. So who's really being scientific and who isn't? This question too is one Gaddis explores, in ways that are certain to spark interdisciplinary controversy.

Written in the tradition of Marc Bloch and E.H. Carr, The Landscape of History is at once an engaging introduction to the historical method for beginners, a powerful reaffirmation of it for practitioners, a startling challenge to social scientists, and an effective skewering of post-modernist claims that we can't know anything at all about the past. Working against prevailing attitudes that see history merely as the arena of texts, discourses, ideologies, and metaphors, De Landa traces the concrete movements and interplays of matter and energy through human populations in the last millennium. The result is an entirely novel approach to the study of human societies and their always mobile, semi-stable forms, cities, economies, technologies, and languages.

De Landa attacks three domains that have given shape to human societies: economics, biology, and linguistics. In each case, De Landa discloses the self-directed processes of matter and energy interacting with the whim and will of human history itself to form a panoramic vision of the West free of rigid teleology and naive notions of progress and, even more important, free of any deterministic source for its urban, institutional, and technological forms. The source of all concrete forms in the West's history, rather, is shown to derive from internal morphogenetic capabilities that lie within the flow of matter--energy itself.

A Swerve Edition.

Author: Manuel De Landa
Publisher: Zone Books
Published: 01/11/2000
Pages: 336
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 1.20lbs
Size: 8.90h x 6.00w x 1.10d
ISBN: 9780942299328
Audience: Young Adult
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_b51a4312-97c2-4d93-942a-dae788043985.jpg?v=1760039867
nothing-ever-dies-vietnam-and-the-memory-of-war-9780674979840
Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War

Finalist, National Book Critics Circle Award
Finalist, National Book Award in Nonfiction
A New York Times Book Review "The Year in Reading" Selection

All wars are fought twice, the first time on the battlefield, the second time in memory. Jake Newsome provides an overview of the Nazis' targeted violence against LGBTQ+ people and details queer survivors' fraught and ongoing fight for the acknowledgement, compensation, and memorialization of LGBTQ+ victims. Within this context, a new generation of queer activists has used the pink triangle--a reminder of Germany's fascist past--as the visual marker of gay liberation, seeking to end queer people's status as second-class citizens by asserting their right to express their identity openly.

The reclamation of the pink triangle occurred first in West Germany, but soon activists in the United States adopted this chapter from German history as their own. As gay activists on opposite sides of the Atlantic grafted pink triangle memories onto new contexts, they connected two national communities and helped form the basis of a shared gay history, indeed a new gay identity, that transcended national borders.

Pink Triangle Legacies illustrates the dangerous consequences of historical silencing and how the incorporation of hidden histories into the mainstream understanding of the past can contribute to a more inclusive experience of belonging in the present. But what are the effects of this celebratory storytelling? What happens when a living revolt against injustice becomes an embalmed museum piece?

In this innovative work, Brandon Terry develops a novel theory of interpretation to show how competing accounts of the civil rights movement circulate through politics and political philosophy. The dominant narrative is romantic. This "arc of justice" narrative is found in popular histories, the speeches of Barack Obama, and even the writings of the liberal philosopher John Rawls. Despite being public orthodoxy, these romantic visions are exhausted and unpersuasive on their own terms. The breakdown of the authority of this history of justice has created space for a rival ironic mode, embodied in the political ideas of Afropessimism. While offering a sympathetic critique, Terry ultimately finds Afropessimist thought self-undermining and unworkable.

Instead, he argues, the civil rights movement is best understood in tragic terms. By challenging the attachment to triumphant pasts, Terry demonstrates that tragedy exemplifies what the civil rights movement has been and can still be. Rather, she locates the roots of the modern West in everything from the law codes of Babylon, Assyrian irrigation, and the Phoenician art of sail to Indian literature, Arabic scholarship, and the metalworking riders of the Steppe, to name just a few examples.

According to Quinn, reducing the backstory of the modern West to a narrative that focuses on Greece and Rome impoverishes our view of the past. This understanding of history would have made no sense to the ancient Greeks and Romans themselves, who understood and discussed their own connections to and borrowings from others. They consistently presented their own culture as the result of contact and exchange. Quinn builds on the writings they left behind with rich analyses of other ancient literary sources like the epic of Gilgamesh, holy texts, and newly discovered records revealing details of everyday life. A work of breathtaking scholarship, How the World Made the West also draws on the material culture of the times in art and artifacts as well as findings from the latest scientific advances in carbon dating and human genetics to thoroughly debunk the myth of the modern West as a self-made miracle.

In lively prose and with bracing clarity, as well as through vivid maps and color illustrations, How the World Made the West challenges the stories the West continues to tell about itself. Illiberal nationalism, however, emerged in the United States after the Civil War--resulting in the failure of Reconstruction, the rise of Jim Crow, and the restriction of immigration. Much of American history, Lepore argues, has been a battle between these two forms of nationalism, liberal and illiberal, all the way down to the nation's latest, bitter struggles over immigration.

Defending liberalism, as This America demonstrates, requires making the case for the nation. But American historians largely abandoned that defense in the 1960s when they stopped writing national history. By the 1980s they'd stopped studying the nation-state altogether and embraced globalism instead. "When serious historians abandon the study of the nation," Lepore tellingly writes, "nationalism doesn't die. John Arnold's addition to Oxford's popular Very Short Introductions series is a stimulating essay about how people study and understand history. The book begins by inviting us to think about various questions provoked by our investigation of history, and then explores the ways in which these questions have been answered in the past. Such key concepts as causation, interpretation, and periodization are introduced by way of concrete examples of how historians work, thus giving the reader a sense of the excitement implicit in discovering the past--and ourselves.

The aim throughout History: A Very Short Introduction is to discuss theories of history in a general, pithy, and accessible manner, rather than delve into specific periods. Not simply a textbook of definitions, each volume in this series provides trenchant and provocative--yet always balanced and complete--discussions of the central issues in a given discipline or field. Every Very Short Introduction gives a readable evolution of the subject in question, demonstrating how the subject has developed and how it has influenced society. Eventually, the series will encompass every major academic discipline, offering all students an accessible and abundant reference library.
