K. C. to the Court of Persia

The history of Persia from the death of Nadir Shah to the
accession of the present King, comprehending a period of fifty-one
years, presents little else than a catalogue of the names of tyrants
and usurpers, and a succession of murders, treacheries and scenes
of misery.
After the assassination of Nadir, one of the most formidable of
the competitors for the vacant throne, was Mahomed Hassan
Khan, the head of the Cadjar tribe, and a person of high rank
among the nobles of Shah Thamas, the last king of the Seffi race.3xii
Mahomed Hassan Khan had several sons: Hossein Kooli
Khan, the eldest, was father to the present King of Persia, and
was killed in a battle with the Turcomans: Aga Mahomed Khan, the
second son, was the immediate predecessor of his nephew on the
throne.
Mahomed Hassan Khan had not long assumed the crown, when
he was opposed by Kerim Khan, a native of Courdistan; who,
under pretence of protecting the rights of Ismael,4 a lineal descendant
of the Seffi family, and then a child, secured to himself so large
a share of influence and authority in the state, that he very soon
supplanted virtually the pageant that he had erected; and, while he
still concealed his ambition under the name of Vakeel or Regent, exercised
all the real powers of the sovereign of Persia. The birth of
Kerim Khan was obscure; but the habits of his early years qualified
him for the times in which he lived, and the destiny to which hexiii
aspired. His family, indeed, was a low branch of an obscure tribe in
Courdistan, that of the Zunds, from which his dynasty has been denominated;
and his profession was the single occupation of all his countrymen,
robbery,5 which, when it thus becomes a national object, loses
in reputation all its grossness. Here he acquired the talents and
hardihood of a soldier; and was renowned for an effectual spirit of
enterprise, and for great personal skill in the exercise of the sword, a
qualification of much value among his people. The long revolutions
of Persia called forth every talent and every passion; and the hopes of
Kerim Khan were excited by the partial successes of others, and
by the consciousness of his own resources. He entered the field; and
eventually overcame Mahomed Hassan Khan, his principal competitor,
who fled and was killed in Mazanderan. The conqueror having
seized and confined the children of his rival, proceeded to quell the
several inferior chiefs, who, in their turns, had aspired to the succession.
His superior activity and talents finally secured the dominion:
and having, in 1755, settled at Shiraz, he made that city the seat of
his government. He beautified it by many public buildings, both of
use and luxury; and their present state attests the solid magnificence of
his taste. His memory is much lamented in Persia; as his reign, a
reign of dissipation and splendor, was congenial to the character of the
people. In his time prostitutes were publicly protected; their calling was
classed among the professions; and the chief, or representative, of theirxiv
numbers, attended by all the state and parade of the most respected
of the Khans and Mirzas, used daily to stand before the Sovereign at
his Durbar.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 51819
Author: Morier, James Justinian
Release Date: Apr 21, 2016
Format: eBook
Language: English

La Perse, la Chaldée et la Susiane

Les gravures contenues dans ce volume ont t dessines sur bois
d'aprs les photographies de l'auteur par MM.
A. de Bar,Barclay,. Construction cranes dotted the skyline of its booming capital, Tehran. The regime's feared secret police force SAVAK had crushed communist opposition, and the Shah had bought off the conservative Muslim clergy inside the country. He seemed invulnerable, and invaluable to the United States as an ally in the Cold War. Fourteen months later the Shah fled Iran into exile, forced from the throne by a volcanic religious revolution led by a fiery cleric named Ayatollah Khomeini. The ensuing hostage crisis forever damaged America's standing in the world. How could the United States, which had one of the largest CIA stations in the world and thousands of military personnel in Iran, have been so blind?

The spellbinding story Scott Anderson weaves is one of a dictator blind to the disdain of his subjects and a superpower blundering into disaster. Scott Anderson tells this astonishing tale with the narrative brio, mordant wit, and keen analysis that made his bestselling Lawrence of Arabia one of the key texts in understanding the modern Middle East. The Iranian Revolution, Anderson convincingly argues, was as world-shattering an event as the French and Russian revolutions. In the Middle East, in India, in Southeast Asia, in Europe, and now in the United States, the hatred of economically-marginalized, religiously-fervent masses for a wealthy secular elite has led to violence and upheaval - and Iran was the template. King of Kings is a bravura work of history, and a warning.

Author: Scott Anderson
Publisher: Doubleday Books
Published: 08/05/2025
Pages: 512
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.85lbs
Size: 9.40h x 6.00w x 1.50d
ISBN: 9780385548076

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 05/15/2025
Booklist 06/01/2025 pg. 20
Publishers Weekly 06/16/2025

About the Author
SCOTT ANDERSON is the author of two novels and five works of nonfiction, including Lawrence of Arabia, an international bestseller which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and a New York Times Notable Book. Nasr reveals how these experiences have shaped a geopolitical outlook driven by pervasive fear of America and its plans for the Middle East.

Challenging the notion that Iran's foreign policy simply reflects its revolutionary values or theocratic government, Iran's Grand Strategy provides invaluable new insights into what Iran wants and why, explaining the country's resistance to the United States, its nuclear ambitions, and its pursuit of influence and proxies across the Middle East.

Author: Vali Nasr
Publisher: Princeton University Press
Published: 05/27/2025
Pages: 408
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.55lbs
Size: 9.40h x 6.30w x 1.50d
ISBN: 9780691268927

About the Author
Vali Nasr is the Majid Khadduri Professor of International Affairs and Middle East Studies at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies. At eighteen she witnessed the civil unrest of the 1979 Iranian revolution and continued to live in the Islamic Republic during its most volatile times, including the Iran-Iraq War. In a deeply intimate and personal story, Saper recounts her privileged childhood in prerevolutionary Iran and how she gradually became aware of the paradoxes in her life and community--primarily the disparate religions and cultures.

In 1979 under the Ayatollah regime, Iran became increasingly unfamiliar and hostile to Saper. Seemingly overnight she went from living a carefree life of wearing miniskirts and attending high school to listening to fanatic diatribes, forced to wear the hijab, and hiding in the basement as Iraqi bombs fell over the city. She eventually fled to the United States in 1987 with her husband and children after, in part, witnessing her six-year-old daughter's indoctrination into radical Islamic politics at school. Axworthy explains how that outpouring of support for an end to tyranny in Iran paused and then moved on to other areas in the region like Egypt and Libya, leaving Iran's leadership unchanged.

The Iranian Revolution of 1979 was a defining moment of the modern era. Its success unleashed a wave of Islamist fervor across the Middle East and signaled a sharp decline in the appeal of Western ideologies in the Islamic world. Axworthy takes readers through the major periods in Iranian history over the last thirty years: the overthrow of the old regime and the creation of the new one; the Iran-Iraq war; the reconstruction era following the war; the reformist wave led by Mohammed Khatami; and the present day, in which reactionaries have re-established control. Throughout, he emphasizes that the Iranian revolution was centrally important in modern history because it provided the world with a clear model of development that was not rooted in Western ideologies. Whereas the world's major revolutions of the previous two centuries had been fuelled by Western, secular ideologies, the Iranian Revolution drew its inspiration from Islam.

Revolutionary Iran is both richly textured and from one of the leading authorities on the region; combining an expansive scope with the most accessible and definitive account of this epoch in all its humanity.

Author: Michael Axworthy
Publisher: Oxford University Press
Published: 04/01/2016
Pages: 544
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 1.60lbs
Size: 9.20h x 6.10w x 1.40d
ISBN: 9780190468965

About the Author
Michael Axworthy is Former Head of the Iran Section of the British Foreign Office from 1998-2000. Momentous geopolitical shifts, changing leaderships, and evolving domestic priorities have not fundamentally altered this antagonistic relationship. Standard explanations pin the blame for this enduring hostility on Iran and its leaders' revolutionary ideology and policies at odds with the United States and the West. While Iran bears significant blame for a deeply adversarial relationship--the country often engages in dangerous and repressive activities--this book demonstrates that "it's them, not us" accounts cannot alone explain America's posture toward this complicated but critically important country. Drawing on original interviews with former government officials, oral histories, memoirs, congressional hearings, archival material, and the author's own participation in dozens of Iran-related track two meetings, Dalia Dassa Kaye deftly explores how America's Iran policy is made, the people who make it, and the underlying ideas and perceptions that inform it. Dassa Kaye looks back at US policy toward Iran over the past four decades to help us look ahead, offering wider lessons for understanding American foreign policymaking and providing critical insights at a pivotal time of heightened military tensions in and around the Middle East.

Author: Dalia Dassa Kaye
Publisher: Stanford University Press
Published: 12/02/2025
Pages: 236
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.75lbs
Size: 8.82h x 5.98w x 0.63d
ISBN: 9781503644595

About the Author
Dalia Dassa Kaye is a Senior Fellow at the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations and former Senior Political Scientist and Director of the RAND Center for Middle East Public Policy. He had direct operational responsibility for the strikes on Qassem Soleimani and two successive leaders of ISIS, the many months of deterrence operations against Iran and its proxies, and the methodical drawdown in Iraq. He directed the noncombatant evacuation operation in Afghanistan, and our final withdrawal from that tortured country.

The Melting Point has three themes. The first one is the importance of the primacy of civilian control of the military. It has become a widely perceived truth that this control has been eroded over the past few years. General McKenzie doesn't believe that to be the case, and he speaks with some authority on the matter arguing that the civ-mil relationship isn't perfect or frictionless, but it doesn't have to be, and probably shouldn't be. It is, however, more durable than many believe, and is supported and embraced by the military to a degree that some critics do not choose to recognize.

The second theme is the uniqueness of being a combatant commander. Combatant commanders participate in the development of policy, although as junior partners. They are also responsible for the execution of policy once civilian leaders have formulated their decision, a unique position, and very different than the role of a service chief, or even the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. None of these officers are in the chain of command, and they have no ultimate, mortal responsibility or authority for execution. Only the combatant commander stands astride the boundary of decision-making and execution.

Finally, the third theme that McKenzie argues is that leaders matter, and the decisions they make have a profound effect on what happens on the battlefield. McKenzie provides an honest assessment of his time in command--describing decisions that were sound, as well as some outcomes he wishes were different. He offers a vivid portrait of leadership in action in one of the most volatile regions of the world.

Author: Kenneth F. Its name evokes images of almost superhuman courage, endurance, and fighting spirit. In this eye-opening book, military analyst James Lacey takes a fresh look at Marathon and reveals why the battle happened, how it was fought, and whether, in fact, it saved Western civilization. Lacey brilliantly reconstructs the world of the fifth century B.C. leading up to the astonishing military defeat of the Persian Empire by the vastly undermanned Greek defenders. With the kind of vivid detail that characterizes the best modern war reportage, he shows how the heavily armed Persian army was shocked and demoralized by the relentless assault of the Athenian phalanx. He reveals the fascinating aftermath of Marathon, how its fighters became the equivalent of our "Greatest Generation," and challenges the legacy and lessons that have often been misunderstood--perhaps, now more than ever, at our own peril.

Immediate, visceral, and full of new analyses that defy decades of conventional wisdom, The First Clash is a superb interpretation of a conflict that indeed made the world safe for Aristotle, Plato, and our own modern democracy.

"With a fresh eye to tactics, strategy, and military organization, and with his text grounded in direct experience of the troops on the battlefield, James Lacey gives us not only new understanding of how the Athenians managed to win but also a greater appreciation of the beginning of a long tradition of Western military dynamism that we take for granted today."--Victor Davis Hanson, author of Carnage and Culture

"Lacey's swords-and-shields approach will absorb readers ever fascinated by the famous battles of antiquity."--Booklist

"A lively and rewarding read."--Charleston Post and Courier

"Exemplary . . . The attackers called themselves the "Muslim Students of the Imam Khomeini Line" and claimed the backing of Iran's fiercely anti-American revolutionary leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Their central demand: that the United States extradite the former Shah to stand trial in Iran-or they would execute their American hostages. This book is my story as one of the 52 Americans held captive for 444 days. It is based on a secret daily journal I kept during my imprisonment and smuggled out of Iran. At more than thousand pages, it is the most detailed account maintained by any hostage. For nearly forty years, the journal sat in a safe deposit box, waiting for its story to be told. It is a day-by-day chronicle of emotion, heartbreak, dark humor, endurance-and quiet acts of defiance. It is also a record of resistance, covert communication, and espionage, carried out under the eyes of our captors. This is a true account drawn from one of the most dramatic episodes in modern American history, when the most powerful nation on earth stood paralyzed before a wave of revolutionary extremism.

Author: Michael H.
