We are in one of
those phases of experience which become cardinal
in history. A series of immense and tragic events
have shattered the self-complacency and challenged
the will and intelligence of mankind. That easy
general forward movement of human affairs which
for several generations had seemed to justify the
persuasion of a necessary and invincible progress,
progress towards greater powers, greater happiness,
and a continual enlargement of life, has been
checked violently and perhaps arrested altogether.
The spectacular catastrophe of the Great War has
revealed an accumulation of destructive forces in
our outwardly prosperous society, of which few of
us had dreamt; and it has also revealed a profound
incapacity to deal with and restrain these forces.
The two years of want, confusion, and indecision
[Pg 2]that have followed the Great War in Europe and
Asia, and the uncertainties that have disturbed life
even in the comparatively untouched American
world, seem to many watchful minds even more
ominous to our social order than the war itself.
What is happening to our race? they ask. Did
the prosperities and confident hopes with which the
twentieth century opened, mark nothing more than
a culmination of fortuitous good luck? Has the
cycle of prosperity and progress closed? To what
will this staggering and blundering, the hatreds
and mischievous adventures of the present time,
bring us? Is the world in the opening of long
centuries of confusion and disaster such as ended
the Western Roman Empire in Europe or the
Han prosperity in China? And if so, will the
debacle extend to America? Even in the roughest mining camps a woman is absolutely safe, and is treated with a
consideration unknown in many more civilized centres. This remarkable story illustrates the
Westerners innate chivalry in a very striking fashion. Sooner than drag the name of a young
schoolmistress into a quarrel, a resident of Three Corners, Montana, allowed himself to be made an
outlaw, and for weeks defied the population of a whole county to arrest him, even when a field gun
was brought out to shell his fastness. How in his extremity the girl he had befriended came to his
rescue and put an end to this extraordinary war is graphically told in the narrative.
In the extreme western part of the
State of Montana, U.S.A., in the
County of Beulah, lies a little town
called Three Corners. At first only
a junction on the Rio Grande Railway,
from which point countless thousands of
cattle were shipped to all parts of the world,
Three Corners grew to be a flourishing place.
The wooden shanties, gambling joints, and
dance halls gave way to brick buildings, several
banks, a school, and other signs of progress, as
respectable settlers moved farther toward the
Golden West. Of course, a part of the old town
remained, and with it a few of the characters
typical of a Western cow town. Among
these was a tall, raw-boned man who had drifted
West in the eighties, settling at Three Corners
and opening a gambling-house. His name was
Jim Cutler. He was a man of very few
words, but with one great failinghe would
shoot first and argue afterwards. Yet this gambler,
who was known and feared far and wide as a
gun-fighter, was at heart the mildest of men,
beloved by all the children in the town, to whom
he gave coppers galore. Furthermore, Cutler
would put up with all manner of insult from a
man under the influence of liquor, or from
Tenderfeet who did not know their danger.
Cutlers shooting propensities were directed
solely toward avowed bad men or those who
delighted in being known as bullies. In the
course of his altercations with such characters
this tall, raw-boned manwho could, and did,
pull his gun like a streak of lightningadded
to the population of the local cemetery with a
score of six.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 50608
Author: Various
Release Date: Dec 4, 2015
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/50608_7075d4ee-c490-4e25-bc7a-eb321bf3dbda.jpg?v=1671773389
the-wide-world-magazine-vol-22-no-131-february-1909-gb-51061
The Wide World Magazine, Vol. 22, No. 131, February, 1909

The Wide World Magazine, Vol. 22, No. 131, February, 1909

Another instalment of a fascinating budget of adventure narratives. Dropping their tools and
staring towards the east, they beheld such a sight
as it falls to the lot of few people to witness.
There, not five hundred yards from the shore,
was being waged a battle to the deatha fight
between the great cow whale previously seen
and a school of thresher sharks. Many of them may
not have the opportunity to read the larger volumes of
histories; and, indeed, even if they had, they would find
their choice of books very much restricted when they
came to the more recent period of European and world
history, although in the last year or so the gap has to some
extent been filled up by several interesting studies of international
politics in the nineteenth century. Some knowledge
of this period is essential if we are to understand
the full significance of the events of to-day, and if we are
to form any helpful opinion of the course to be pursued
in future.
Historians often take for granted that their readers
already have some general knowledge of the groundwork
of events and they build up their structure of criticism,
their delineation of policy and tendencies, and their survey
of international problems on the assumption that the
scaffolding has been erected. But often it has not, and
then history, more especially the complex tangle of international
history, becomes difficult to grasp. It may
therefore serve some useful purpose if a few poles of scaffolding
representing the dates and outline of conflicts
and agreements between nations can be supplied in a very
brief and easily intelligible form, a presentment of the
bare record of facts which may be useful for reference.
During the last hundred years war has been a more
common occurrence in international intercourse than most
people realize. The forty-two records of wars tabled in
these pages do not cover the whole ground. They are8
the chief conflicts, or the conflicts fraught with the most
serious consequences, but they are by no means the
only occasions on which there was fighting in the world.
Revolutions, unless they led to international war, are
not mentioned, neither are expeditions such as the advance
on Llassa, the Chitral expedition, the Indian frontier wars,
the Kaffir wars, the Somaliland expeditions, the revolt of
the Herreroes in German West Africa or the French
expeditions in Morocco: the wars between the states
of South America, with two exceptions, have also been
omitted. But the list as it stands, is striking enough and
may suffice to make the student inquire further into the
circumstances which produced this almost unceasing strife.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 60026
Author: Ponsonby, Arthur Ponsonby
Release Date: Jul 31, 2019
Format: eBook
Language: English

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - A "bracing" (Vox) guide for surviving and resisting America's turn towards authoritarianism, from "a rising public intellectual unafraid to make bold connections between past and present" (The New York Times)

"Timothy Snyder reasons with unparalleled clarity, throwing the past and future into sharp relief. As a public intellectual, he has turned that knowledge toward counsel and prediction, working against authoritarianism here and abroad. His book On Tyranny has inspired millions around the world to fight for freedom. Now, in this tour de force of political philosophy, he helps us see exactly what we're fighting for.

Freedom is the great American commitment, but as Snyder argues, we have lost sight of what it means--and this is leading us into crisis. Too many of us look at freedom as the absence of state power: We think we're free if we can do and say as we please, and protect ourselves from government overreach. But true freedom isn't so much freedom from as freedom to--the freedom to thrive, to take risks for futures we choose by working together. Drawing on the work of philosophers and political dissidents, conversations with contemporary thinkers, and his own experiences coming of age in a time of American exceptionalism, Snyder identifies the practices and attitudes--the habits of mind--that will allow us to design a government in which we and future generations can flourish. We come to appreciate the importance of traditions (championed by the right) but also the role of institutions (the purview of the left). Intimate yet ambitious, this book helps forge a new consensus rooted in a politics of abundance, generosity, and grace.

Author: Timothy Snyder
Publisher: Crown Publishing Group (NY)
Published: 09/17/2024
Pages: 368
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.45lbs
Size: 9.30h x 6.30w x 1.40d
ISBN: 9780593728727

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 08/01/2024
Booklist 08/01/2024 pg. 3
Publishers Weekly 10/21/2024

About the Author
Timothy Snyder holds the Temerty Chair in Modern European History at the Munk School, University of Toronto, and is a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the "Secret Annex" of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. The country is now under the control of a military junta, with army chief Jorge Rafael Videla at the helm. With quiet support from the United States and tacit approval from much of Argentina's people, who are tired of constant bombings and gunfights, the junta swiftly launches the National Reorganization Process or El Proceso--a bland name masking their ruthless campaign to crush the political left and instill the country with "Western, Christian" values. The junta holds power until 1983 and decimates a generation.

One of the military's most diabolical acts is kidnapping hundreds of pregnant women. After giving birth in captivity, the women are "disappeared," and their babies secretly given to other families--many of them headed by police or military officers. For mothers of pregnant daughters and daughters-in-law, the source of their grief is twofold--the disappearances of their children, and the theft of their grandchildren. A group of fierce grandmothers forms the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, dedicated to finding the stolen infants and seeking justice from a nation that betrayed them. At a time when speaking out could mean death, the Abuelas confront military officers and launch protests to reach international diplomats and journalists. They become detectives, adopting disguises to observe suspected grandchildren, and even work alongside a renowned American scientist to pioneer groundbreaking genetic tests.

A Flower Traveled in My Blood is the rarest of nonfiction that reads like a novel and puts your heart in your throat. Browning argues that most of the men of RPB 101 were not fanatical Nazis but, rather, ordinary middle-aged, working-class men who committed these atrocities out of a mixture of motives, including the group dynamics of conformity, deference to authority, role adaptation, and the altering of moral norms to justify their actions. Very quickly three groups emerged within the battalion: a core of eager killers, a plurality who carried out their duties reliably but without initiative, and a small minority who evaded participation in the acts of killing without diminishing the murderous efficiency of the battalion whatsoever.

While this book discusses a specific Reserve Unit during WWII, the general argument Browning makes is that most people succumb to the pressures of a group setting and commit actions they would never do of their own volition.

Ordinary Men is a powerful, chilling, and important work with themes and arguments that continue to resonate today.

Author: Christopher R. That event became the benchmark for atrocity, and, in the Western imagination, the paradigmatic genocide. Its memory orients so much of our thinking, and crucially, forms the basic justification for Israel's right first to establish itself and then to defend itself. But in many parts of the world, ravaged by other conflicts and experiences of mass slaughter, the Holocaust's singularity is not always taken for granted, even when its hideous atrocity is. Outside of the West, Pankaj Mishra argues, the dominant story of the twentieth century is that of decolonization.

The World After Gaza takes the current war, and the polarized reaction to it, as the starting point for a broad reevaluation of two competing narratives of the last century: the Global North's triumphant account of victory over totalitarianism and the spread of liberal capitalism, and the Global South's hopeful vision of racial equality and freedom from colonial rule. At a moment when the world's balance of power is shifting, and the Global North no longer commands ultimate authority, it is critically important that we understand how and why the two halves of the world are failing to talk to each other.

As old touchstones and landmarks crumble, only a new history with a sharply different emphasis can reorient us to the world and worldviews now emerging into the light. In this concise, powerful, and pointed treatise, Mishra reckons with the fundamental questions posed by our present crisis -- about whether some lives matter more than others, how identity is constructed, and what the role of the nation-state ought to be. The World After Gaza is an indispensable moral guide to our past, present, and future.

Author: Pankaj Mishra
Publisher: Penguin Press
Published: 02/11/2025
Pages: 304
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 0.85lbs
Size: 8.50h x 6.00w x 1.20d
ISBN: 9798217058891

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 02/15/2025

About the Author
Pankaj Mishra is the author of Age of Anger: A History of the Present, From the Ruins of Empire: The Intellectuals Who Remade Asia, and several other books of nonfiction and fiction. Czech Milena was Kafka's first translator and epistolary lover, and a journalist opposed to fascism. A non-conformist, bi-sexual feminist, she was way ahead of her time. With the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, her home became a central meeting place for Jewish refugees. German Margarete, born to a middle-class family, married the son of the Jewish philosopher Martin Buber. But soon swept up in the fervor of the Bolshevik Revolution, she met her second partner, the Communist Heinz Neumann. Called to Moscow for his "political deviations," he fell victim to Stalin's purges while Margarete was exiled to the hell of the Soviet gulag. Two years later, traded by Stalin to Hitler, she ended up outside Berlin in Ravensbrück, the only concentration camp built for women.

Milena and Margarete loved each other at the risk of their lives. Ypres did.

The final months of 1914 were the bloodiest interval in a famously bloody war, a killing season. They ended with the First Battle of Ypres, a struggle in West Flanders, Belgium, whose importance has been too long overlooked--until now. Robert Cowley's fresh, novelistic account of this crucial period describes how German armies in France were poised to sweep north to capture the Channel ports and knock England out of the war--and were only held back by a brilliant improvisation from a cobbled-together handful of desperate British, French, and Belgian troops.

In a re-examination of events that have too long seemed set in stone, Cowley combines a wide array of source materials with sharp portrayals both of military leaders and of the men they led. We follow Albert of Belgium, the world's last warrior king; French General Ferdinand Foch, a former professor of military science; and Hendrik Geeraert, an alcoholic barge keeper, who pulled off Albert's literal last-ditch effort. Many other memorable characters emerge, including Sir John French, a British commander, who displayed his greatest talent for maneuver in the bedroom; along with both a young Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill.

The vast brawl of four armies in Flanders was a turning point that irrevocably changed the nature of modern warfare. In this visceral account, based on thirty years of research and picking up where Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August left off, Cowley details the crucial decisions that determined the outcome of the Great War--which may have been decided by a single, extraordinary afternoon.

Author: Robert Cowley
Publisher: Random House
Published: 09/02/2025
Pages: 752
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 2.35lbs
Size: 9.30h x 6.00w x 1.60d
ISBN: 9781400068524

Review Citation(s):
Library Journal Prepub Alert 07/01/2023 pg. 6
Library Journal 07/01/2025 pg. 10

About the Author
Robert Cowley is an authority on American and European military history whose writing spans the Civil War to World War II. Desperate to keep the circle of trust close, MI6 never revealed Gordievsky's name to its counterparts in the CIA, which in turn grew obsessed with figuring out the identity of Britain's obviously top-level source. Demanding that the Kremlin obey its own laws, an improbable band of Soviet citizens held unauthorized public gatherings, petitioned in support of arrested intellectuals, and circulated banned samizdat texts. Soviet authorities arrested dissidents, subjected them to bogus trials and vicious press campaigns, sentenced them to psychiatric hospitals and labor camps, sent them into exile--and transformed them into martyred heroes. Hank and Gene navigated the ambitions and eccentricities of legends Anita Ekberg, Ava Gardner, Anna Magnani and Simone Signoret, they calmed a furious Marlon Brando, faced down domineering Italian producers with an impromptu actors' strike, and struck a secret deal with Charlie Chaplin. Incredibly, after the war her heroism, like that of many others, was suppressed by communist Poland and remained virtually unknown for 60 years. Unknown, that is, until three high school girls from an economically depressed, rural school district in southeast Kansas stumbled upon a tantalizing reference to Sendler's rescues, which they fashioned into a history project, a play they called Life in a Jar. Their innocent drama was first seen in Kansas, then the Midwest, then New York, Los Angeles, Montreal, and finally Poland, where they elevated Irena Sendler to a national hero, championing her legacy of tolerance and respect for all people. Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project is a Holocaust history and more. It is the inspirational story of Protestant students from Kansas, each carrying her own painful burden, each called in her own complex way to the history of a Catholic woman who knocked on Jewish doors in the Warsaw ghetto and, in Sendler's own words, "tried to talk the mothers out of their children." Inspired by Irena Sendler, they are living examples of the power of one person to change the world and models for young people everywhere.

Author: Jack Mayer
Publisher: Long Trail Press
Published: 03/28/2011
Pages: 396
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 1.20lbs
Size: 8.90h x 5.90w x 0.70d
ISBN: 9780984111312

Review Citation(s):
Foreword 06/18/2013

This title is not returnable
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_bbc371c9-0d0a-473e-b167-c93eb7365a2e.jpg?v=1759919408
parallel-lives-a-love-story-from-a-lost-continent-9781324073772
Parallel Lives: A Love Story from a Lost Continent

Best-selling novelist and art historian Iain Pears enchants readers with the real-life romance between Larissa Salmina, a Russian art curator, and Francis Haskell, a British art historian. Writing alongside Anne rather than over her, Franklin explores the day-to-day perils of the Holocaust in the Netherlands as well as Anne's ultimate fate, restoring her humanity and agency in all their messiness, heroism, and complexity.

With antisemitism once again in the news, The Many Lives of Anne Frank takes a fresh and timely look at the debates around Anne's life and work, including the controversial adaptations of the diary, Anne's evolution as a fictional character, and the ways her story and image have been politically exploited. Franklin reveals how Anne has been understood and misunderstood, both as a person and as an idea, and opens up new avenues for interpreting her life and writing in today's hyperpolarized world.

Author: Ruth Franklin
Publisher: Yale University Press
Published: 01/27/2025
Pages: 440
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.45lbs
Size: 8.40h x 6.10w x 1.50d
ISBN: 9780300248128

Review Citation(s):
Publishers Weekly 11/25/2024
Kirkus Reviews 12/01/2024
BookPage 02/01/2025

About the Author
Ruth Franklin is the author of A Thousand Darknesses: Lies and Truth in Holocaust Fiction, a finalist for the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature, and of Shirley Jackson: A Rather Haunted Life, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography.
