The Emperor, the Empress Dowager, and the
court ladies were shut up within the Forbidden City, away from a world
they were anxious to see, and which was equally anxious to see them.
Then the Emperor instituted reform, the Empress Dowager came out from
behind the screen, and the court entered into social relations with
Europeans.

For twenty years and more Mrs. Headland has been physician to the
family of the Empress Dowager's mother, the Empress' sister, and many
of the princesses and high official ladies in Peking. She has visited
them in a social as well as a professional way, has taken with her her
friends, to whom the princesses have shown many favours, and they have
themselves been constant callers at our home. It is to my wife,
therefore, that I am indebted for much of the information contained in
this book.

There are many who have thought that the Empress Dowager has been
misrepresented. The world has based its judgment of her character upon
her greatest mistake, her participation in the Boxer movement, which
seems unjust, and has closed its eyes to the tremendous reforms which
only her mind could conceive and her hand carry out. The great Chinese
officials to a man recognized in her a mistress of every situation; the
foreigners who have come into most intimate contact with her, voice her
praise; while her hostile critics are confined for the most part to
those who have never known her. It might with equal truth be asserted that the
greatest Russian woman who ever lived was in reality a German. Napoleon, though Italian in blood and lineage, made
himself so French in sympathy and understanding as to be able to play
upon the imagination of all France as a great musician plays upon a
splendid instrument, with absolute sureness of touch and an ability to
extract from it every one of its varied harmonies. So the Empress
Catharine of Russiaperhaps the greatest woman who ever ruled a
nationthough born of German parents, became Russian to the core and
made herself the embodiment of Russian feeling and Russian aspiration.

At the middle of the eighteenth century Russia was governed by the
Empress Elizabeth, daughter of Peter the Great. In her own time, and
for a long while afterward, her real capacity was obscured by her
apparent indolence, her fondness for display, and her seeming
vacillation; but now a very high place is accorded her in the history
of Russian rulers. By
writing Gulliver's Travels he made himself immortal. The external facts
of his singular relations with two charming women are sufficiently well
known; but a definite explanation of these facts has never yet been
given. Swift held his tongue with a repellent taciturnity. No one ever
dared to question him. Whether the true solution belongs to the sphere
of psychology or of physiology is a question that remains unanswered.

But, as the case is one of the most puzzling in the annals of love, it
may be well to set forth the circumstances very briefly, to weigh the
theories that have already been advanced, and to suggest another.

Jonathan Swift was of Yorkshire stock, though he happened to be born in
Dublin, and thus is often spoken of as "the great Irish satirist," or
"the Irish dean." It was, in truth, his fate to spend much of his life
in Ireland, and to die there, near the cathedral where his remains now
rest; but in truth he hated Ireland and everything connected with it,
just as he hated Scotland and everything that was Scottish. Cold-blooded statesmen, such as Parnell, have lost
the leadership of their party and have gone down in history with a clouded
name because of the fascination exercised upon them by some woman, often
far from beautiful, and yet possessing the mysterious power which makes
the triumphs of statesmanship seem slight in comparison with the swiftly
      flying hours of pleasure.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4693
Author: Orr, Lyndon
Release Date: Nov 1, 2003
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/4693_72d9029d-e086-430a-a7f8-4b9cdace7691.jpg?v=1671278647
the-log-cabin-lady-an-anonymous-autobiography-gb-6500
The Log-Cabin Lady — An Anonymous Autobiography

The Log-Cabin Lady — An Anonymous Autobiography

The story of The Log-Cabin Lady is one of the annals of America. There were, at that table, a group of important
      women.

When I had finished the story of the great scientist, whose service to
humanity was halted by lack of laboratory equipment, and of the very
radium which she had herself discovered, one guest asked: Why do you
spend your life with a woman's magazine when you could do big work like
serving Madame Curie? It is in compliance with wishes expressed from many
quarters that it is prepared for publication in its present form.

Objections having been made to the former title, as not sufficiently
easy to be understood, the present has been substituted as
expressive of the main purpose of the essay; though, by myself, the
other is preferred, partly for the reason others do not like
it,that is, that it requires some thought to see what it
means, and might thus prepare the reader to meet me on my own
ground. Besides, it offers a larger scope, and is, in that way, more
just to my desire. I meant by that title to intimate the fact that,
while it is the destiny of Man, in the course of the ages, to
ascertain and fulfil the law of his being, so that his life shall be
seen, as a whole, to be that of an angel or messenger, the action of
prejudices and passions which attend, in the day, the growth of the
individual, is continually obstructing the holy work that is to make
the earth a part of heaven. By Man I mean both man and woman; these
are the two halves of one thought. I lay no especial stress on the
welfare of either. I believe that the development of the one cannot
be effected without that of the other. Christian
civilization has exalted her almost infinitely above the position
to which either paganism or Mohammedanism assigned her. This
elevation is the natural outgrowth of the example and teaching of
Jesus of Nazareth. Unlike other ancient great instructors, he did
not repel women from discipleship, but cordially welcomed her
presence wherever he taught. His lessons of wisdom, and his
precious promises of life everlasting, were in all their fullness
addressed to her as freely as to the most honored of men. His
illustrations of sweeping the house to find the lost piece of
silver, and of the leaven hid in three measures of meal, were
drawn from her employments, and were probably suggested by her
presence. To the cry of the poor Syro-Phenician woman, no less
than to that of the centurion or nobleman, did he give his
attention and sympathy, and with equal speed did he answer the
agonizing prayer. Rising far above the trammels of Jewish
prejudice, while he sat weary at the mouth of Jacob's well, he
taught the beauty of spiritual worship to the astonished woman of
Samaria. She became his first missionary to the people of her
city, to whom she told the story of his wonderful wisdom, and
said, "Is not this the Christ?" How kind must have been his
spirit, how tender his words, to the sisters at Bethany, to cause
the exclamation, "If thou hadst been here, my brother had not
died!" How consoling must have been his accents, which drew the
fair penitent to his feet, and which led her, in loving
adoration, to wash them with her tears and to wipe them with the
hairs of her head! How wonderful the manifestation of that Divine
condescension and love which elicited that gratitude which still
lingers in the rich perfumes of the alabaster-box of precious
ointment! No marvel that women "followed him from Galilee," stood
sorrowfully beholding his crucifixion, and when he was taken from
the cross, "followed after and beheld the sepulcher, and how his
body was laid." Their devotion was rewarded, on the morning of
his resurrection, by their being made the first messengers of his
glorious triumph. On such perfect equality were men and women
placed by the blessed Savior as to terms of salvation and Gospel
privileges, that the apostle exclaims, "In Christ Jesus there is
neither male nor female." All are members of his body, and in him
  all become one.
As Christian influences more fully control society, and as the
spirit of Christ permeates the masses, the position of woman
becomes more elevated. She is no longer considered as a slave,
and compelled to bear every burden, as in savage life; nor is she
a mere attendant, or minister to sensual pleasure, as among the
Mohammedans. The bars are removed from the doors of the harem,
and the veil is taken from her face. She sits with the family at
the table, entertains her guests, and enjoys their society. She
studies with her brothers in the same school, recites to the same
teachers, and reads the same books. With her friends, she joins
in the service and song and worship of, the sanctuary, converses
in the social assembly, and listens to distinguished speakers as
they discuss topics of literature, art, science, or
statesmanship. The cry of suffering humanity touches her heart,
and she is deeply interested in the great movements toward the
elevation of the race. In this ascent, every step she has taken
has been in opposition to the protest of the spirit of other
civilizations, which yet lurks in many a breast. To be seen by
strangers, to have her face unveiled, to sit in public
assemblies, to study sciences and arts, is contrary to nature, is
an offense against purity, and tends to destroy her
loveliness, said these inveterate croakers. Yet society
recognized her influence and power, and believed she had both
rights and duties. Step by step, odious laws have been repealed,
her right to her own property has been in great measure secured,
doors of usefulness have been opened before her, her voice is
welcomed from the platform, and her writings from the press. She
visits the sick and the prisoner, and pleads for the suffering,
until hospitals and asylums are founded in their behalf. She
soothes the sorrows of the aged, takes the hand of the orphan to
lead him in paths of safety, and in the tumult of war ministers
  to the wounded and dying.
Amidst her general activity, many questions arise as to what
further avenues of usefulness may properly open. How far may she
engage in business, and in what branches? what is her proper work
in the Church, and to what extent may she perform public
religious services? is she properly a citizen, and what
privileges or rights should she enjoy?are inquiries which
are considered and discussed. The greatest interest is at present
excited by the question, "Should women have the ballot?" and both
in this country and in England it has able advocates and strong
  opponents.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 11632
Author: Webster, Thomas
Release Date: Mar 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

Eighty Years and More; Reminiscences 1815-1897

The psychical growth of a child is not influenced by
days and years, but by the impressions passing events
make on its mind. My idea in going was not to
gratify my curiosity but to do what I could for the cause of France as
well as for my own country by studying specifically the war-time work
of its women and to make them better known to the women of America.
The average American woman who never has traveled in Europe, or only
as a flitting tourist, is firm in the belief that all Frenchwomen are
permanently occupied with fashions or intrigue. If it is impossible to
eradicate this impression, at least the new impression I hope to
create by a recital at first hand of what a number of Frenchwomen (who
are merely carefully selected types) are doing for their country in
its present ordeal, should be all the deeper.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 14197
Author: Atherton, Gertrude Franklin Horn
Release Date: Nov 28, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

Notable Women of Modern China

During a stay of some months in China in the year of 1909, I had an
opportunity to see something of the educational work for women, and to meet
several of the educated women of that interesting country. I was greatly
impressed, both by the excellent work done by the students in the schools,
and by the useful, efficient lives of those who had completed their course
of study. When I returned to America, and spoke of some of the things which
the educated women of China were doing, I found that many people were
greatly surprised to learn that Chinese women were capable of such
achievements. It occurred to me, therefore, that it might be worth while to
put the stories of a few of these women into a form which would make them
accessible to the public.
It will be noted that the majority of the women of whose work I have
written received a part of their education in America. My reason for
selecting these women is not because those whose training has been received
wholly in China are not doing equally good work, but because it is
difficult to gather definite information in regard to the women whose
lives have been spent entirely in their native country. The fact that most
of the biographies in this book are of women in professional life is due to
the same cause. The great aim of the girls' schools in China is, rightly,
to furnish such training as shall prepare their students to be worthy wives
and mothers, and the large majority of those who attend the schools find
their highest subsequent usefulness in the home. But in China, as in other
countries, the life of the woman in the home remains, for the most part,
unwritten.
I have therefore told the stories of the women concerning whose work I have
been able to obtain definite information, believing that they fairly
represent the educated women of China who, wherever their education has
been received, and in whatever sphere it is being used, are ably and
bravely playing an important part in the moulding of the great new China.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 14492
Author: Burton, Margaret E. Through such an attempt perhaps we can more nearly understand
how and why the American woman is what she is to-day.
For a long time to come, one of the principal reasons for the study of
the writings of America will lie, not in their intrinsic merit alone,
but in their revelations of American life, ideals, aspirations, and
social and intellectual endeavors. We Americans need what Professor
Shorey has called "the controlling consciousness of tradition." We have
not sufficiently regarded the bond that connects our present
institutions with their origins in the days of our forefathers. That is
one of the main purposes of this study, and the author believes that
through contributions of such a character he can render the national
intellectual spirit at least as valuable a service as he could through a
study of some legend of ancient Britain or some epic of an extinct race.
As Mr. Percy Boynton has said, "To foster in a whole generation some
clear recognition of other qualities in America than its bigness, and of
other distinctions between the past and the present than that they are
far apart is to contribute towards the consciousness of a national
individuality which is the first essential of national life.... We
must put our minds upon ourselves, we must look to our past and to our
present, and then intelligently to our future."
The author has endeavored to follow such advice by bringing forward
those qualities of colonial womanhood which have made for the
refinement, the intellectuality, the spirit, the aggressiveness, and
withal the genuine womanliness of the present-day American woman. As the
book is not intended for scholars alone, the author has felt free when
he had not original source material before him to quote now and then
from the studies of writers on other phases of colonial lifesuch as
the valuable books by Dr. Philip Alexander Bruce, Dr. John Bassett, Dr.
George Sydney Fisher, Charles C. Tt tapausta vlttkseen oli
Kaarlo VI jo huhtikuussa v. 1713 julkaissut n. k. *pragmatisen
sanktionin*, joka valtakunnan perustuslakina osaksi vahvisti
keisarikunnan jakamattomuuden, osaksi oikeutti perinnllisyyden
siirtymisen naispuolelle miehisen sammuttua, jolloin perintoikeus ensi
kdess oli joutuva keisarin omille, toisessa hnen veli vainajansa
keisari Josefin tyttrille. Nobody but a woman, an
Englishwoman of warm heart, strong brain, and vivid power of
observation, could possibly have written these letters which reflect the
very soul of England since this wicked and cruel war began. She has
unfolded and interpreted to us, as no one else, I think, has even
attempted to do, the development and absolute transformation of English
men and women, which, has enabled them, living and dying, to secure for
their proud nation under God that "new birth of freedom" which Lincoln
at Gettysburg prophesied for his own countrymen. Really the cause is the
same, to secure the selfsame thing, "that government of the people, by
the people, and for the people may not perish from the earth";and if
any American wishes to know how this has been accomplished, he must read
these letters, which were written expressly for our enlightenment.
Mrs. Ward had marvellous qualifications for this patriotic task. The
granddaughter of Doctor Arnold and the niece of Matthew Arnold, from
childhood up she has been as deeply interested in politics and in public
affairs as she has been in literature, by which she has attained such
world-wide fame, and next to English politics, in American politics and
American opinion. She has been a staunch believer in the greatness of
America's future, and has maintained close friendship with leaders of
public thought on both sides of the water. She
devoted herself to the relief of her suffering fellow-beings with the
ardor of a Saint Vincent de Paul, and in return she was considered by
them a moral scourge of God. Because she had the courage to express
opinions new to her generation, and the independence to live according to
her own standard of right and wrong, she was denounced as another
Messalina. The young were bidden not to read her books, and the more
mature warned not to follow her example, the miseries she endured being
declared the just retribution of her actions. Indeed, the infamy attached
to her name is almost incredible in the present age, when new theories
are more patiently criticised, and when purity of motive has been
accepted as the vindication of at least one well-known breach of social
laws. The malignant attacks made upon her character since her death have
been too great to be ignored. They had best be stated here, that the life
which follows may serve as their refutation.

As a rule, the notices which were published after she was dead were
harsher and more uncompromising than those written during her lifetime.
There were happily one or two exceptions. The writer of her obituary
notice in the Monthly Magazine for September, 1797, speaks of her in
terms of unlimited admiration.
This extraordinary woman, he writes, no less distinguished by
admirable talents and a masculine tone of understanding, than by active
humanity, exquisite sensibility, and endearing qualities of heart,
commanding the respect and winning the affections of all who were favored
with her friendship or confidence, or who were within the sphere of her
influence, may justly be considered as a public loss. Quick to feel, and
indignant to resist, the iron hand of despotism, whether civil or
intellectual, her exertions to awaken in the minds of her oppressed sex a
sense of their degradation, and to restore them to the dignity of reason
and virtue, were active and incessant; by her impassioned reasoning and
glowing eloquence, the fabric of voluptuous prejudice has been shaken to
its foundation and totters towards its fall; while her philosophic mind,
taking a wider range, perceived and lamented in the defects of civil
institutions interwoven in their texture and inseparable from them the
causes of those partial evils, destructive to virtue and happiness, which
poison social intercourse and deform domestic life. The State papers of Milan and Venice, of Ferrara and Modena,
have yielded up their treasures; the correspondence of Isabella d'Este,
in the Gonzaga archives at Mantua, has proved a source of inexhaustible
wealth and knowledge. A flood of light has been thrown on the history of
Italy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; public events and
personages have been placed in a new aspect; the judgments of posterity
have been modified and, in some instances, reversed.
We see now, more clearly than ever before, what manner of men and women
these Estes and Gonzagas, these Sforzas and Viscontis, were. We gain
fresh insight into their characters and aims, their secret motives and
private wishes. We see them in their daily occupations and amusements,
at their work and at their play. We follow them from the battle-field
and council chamber, from the chase and tournament, to the privacy of
domestic life and the intimate scenes of the family circle. And we
realize how, in spite of the tragic stories or bloodshed and strife that
darkened their lives, in spite, too, of the low standard of morals and
of the crimes and vices that we are accustomed to associate with
Renaissance princes, there was a rare measure of beauty and goodness, of
culture and refinement, of love of justice and zeal for truth, among
them. As the latest historian of the Papacy, Dr. Pastor, has wisely
remarked, we must take care not to paint the state of morals during the
Italian Renaissance blacker than it really was. Virtue goes quietly on
[Pg vi]her way, while vice is noisy and uproarious; the criminal forces
himself upon the public attention, while the honest man does his duty in
silence, and no one hears of him. This is especially the case with the
women of the Renaissance. They had their faults and their weaknesses,
but the great majority among them led pure and irreproachable lives, and
trained their children in the paths of truth and duty. Even Lucrezia
Borgia, although she may not have been altogether immaculate, was not
the foul creature that we once believed. And the more closely we study
these newly discovered documents, the more we become convinced that this
age produced some of the most admirable types of womanhood that the
world has ever seen. When Castiglione painted his ideal woman in the
pages of the "Cortigiano," he had no need to draw on his imagination.
Elizabeth Gonzaga, Duchess of Urbino, and Isabella d'Este, Marchioness
of Mantua, were both of them women of great intellect and stainless
virtue, whose genuine love of art and letters attracted the choicest
spirits to their court, and exerted the most beneficial influence on the
thought of the day. Isabella, whose vast correspondence with the
foremost painters and scholars of the age has been preserved almost
intact, was probably the most remarkable lady of the Renaissance. The
story of her long and eventful lifea theme of absorbing interestyet
remains to be written. The present work is devoted to the history of her
younger sister, Beatrice, Duchess of Milan, who, as the wife of Lodovico
Sforza, reigned during six years over the most splendid court of Italy.
The charm of her personality, the important part which she played in
political life at a critical moment of Italian history, her love of
music and poetry, and the fine taste which she inherited, in common with
every princess of the house of Este, all help to make Beatrice
singularly attractive, while the interest which she inspires is deepened
by the pathos of her sudden and early death.
If in Isabella we have the supreme representative of Renaissance culture
in its highest and most intellectual phase, Beatrice is the type of that
new-found joy in life, that intoxicating rapture in the actual sense of
existence, that was the heritage [Pg vii]of her generation, and found expression
in the words of a contemporary novelist, Matteo Bandellohimself of
Lombard birthwhen with his last breath he bade his companions live
joyously, "Vivete lieti!" We see this bride of sixteen summers
flinging herself with passionate delight into every amusement, singing
gay songs with her courtiers, dancing and hunting through the livelong
day, outstripping all her companions in the chase, and laughing in the
face of danger. We see her holding her court in the famous Castello of
Porta Giovia or in the summer palaces of Vigevano and Cussago, in these
golden days when Milan was called the new Athens, when Leonardo and
Bramante decorated palaces or arranged masquerades at the duke's bidding,
when Gaspare Visconti wrote sonnets in illuminated books, and Lorenzo da
Pavia constructed organs or viols as perfect and beautiful to see as to
hear, for the pleasure of the youthful duchess. Scholars and poets,
painters and writers, gallant soldiers and accomplished cavaliers, we
see them all at Beatrice's feet, striving how best they may gratify her
fancies and win her smiles. Young and old, they were alike devoted to
her service, from Galeazzo di Sanseverino, the valiant captain who
became her willing slave and chosen companion, to Niccolo da Correggio,
that all-accomplished gentleman who laid down his pen and sword to design
elaborate devices for his mistress's new gowns. We read her merry letters
to her husband and sister, letters sparkling with wit and gaiety and
overflowing with simple and natural affection. We see her rejoicing with
all a young mother's proud delight over her first-born son, repeating, as
mothers will, marvellous tales of his size and growth, and framing tender
phrases for his infant lips. And we catch glimpses of her, too, in sadder
moods, mourning her mother's loss or wounded by neglect and unkindness.
We note how keenly her proud spirit resents wrong and injustice, and how
in her turn she is not always careful of the rights and feelings of her
rivals. But whatever her faults and mistakes may have been, she is always
kindly and generous, human and lovable. A year or two passes, and we see
her, royally arrayed in brocade and jewels, standing up in the great
council hall of Venice, to plead her husband's cause before the [Pg viii]Doge and
Senate. Later on we find her sharing her lord's counsels in court and
camp, receiving king and emperor at Pavia or Vigevano, fascinating the
susceptible heart of Charles VIII. by her charms, and amazing Kaiser
Maximilian by her wisdom and judgment in affairs of state. And then
suddenly the music and dancing, the feasting and travelling, cease, and
the richly coloured and animated pageant is brought to an abrupt close.
Beatrice dies, without a moment's warning, in the flower of youth and
beauty, and the young duchess is borne to her grave in S. Maria delle
Grazie amid the tears and lamentations of all Milan. And with her death,
the whole Milanese state, that fabric which Lodovico Sforza had built up
at such infinite cost and pains, crumbles into ruin. It is as if the
immaterial manifestations of life that formerly emanated
from her body were dying one by one. Her face is
entirely changed. Her expression is not the same,
her gestures are not the same; and she seems to me
as if she were putting off every day more and more
of that something, humanly speaking indefinable, which
makes the personality of a living being. Disease, before
making an end of its victim, introduces into
his body something strange, unfamiliar, something that
is not he, makes of him a new being, so to speak,
in whom we must seek to find the former beinghe,
whose joyous, affectionate features have already ceased
to exist.
July 31.Doctor Simon is to tell me very soon
whether our dear old Rose will live or die. I am waiting
to hear his ring, which to me, is equivalent to that[10]
of a jury at the assizes, announcing their return to the
court room with their verdict. "It is all over, there is
no hope, it is simply a question of time. The disease
has progressed very rapidly. One lung is entirely gone
and the other substantially." And we must return to
the invalid, restore her serenity with a smile, give her
reason to hope for convalescence in every line of our
faces. Then we feel an unconquerable longing to rush
from the room and from the poor creature. We leave
the house, we wander at random through the streets;
at last, overdone with fatigue, we sit down at a table in
a caf. We mechanically take up a copy of L'Illustration
and our eyes fall at once upon the solution of its
last riddle: Against death, there is no appeal!
Monday, August 11.The disease of the lungs is
complicated with peritonitis. She has terrible pains in
the bowels, she cannot move without assistance, she cannot
lie on her back or her left side. In God's name, is
not death enough? must she also endure suffering, aye,
torture, as the final implacable breaking-up of the
human organism? And she suffers thus, poor wretch! in
one of the servant's rooms, where the sun, shining in
through a window in the sloping roof, makes the air
as stifling as in a hothouse, and where there is so little
room that the doctor has to put his hat on the bed.
We struggled to the last to keep her, but finally we had
to make up our minds to let her go away. She was
unwilling to go to Maison Dubois, where we proposed to[11]
take her; it seems that twenty-five years ago, when she
first came to us, she went there to see the nurse in charge
of Edmond, who died there, and so that particular hospital
represents to her the place where people die. I
am waiting for Simon who is to bring her a permit to
go to Lariboisire. She passed almost a good night.
She is all ready, in high spirits, in fact. We have covered
everything up from her as well as we could. She
longs to be gone. She is in a great hurry. She feels
that she is going to get well there. At two o'clock
Simon arrives: "Here it is, all right." She refuses to
have a litter: "I should think I was dead!" she says.
She is dressed. As soon as she leaves her bed, all the
signs of life to be seen upon her face disappear. It is
as if the earth had risen under her skin. She comes
down into our apartments. Sitting in the dining-room,
with a trembling hand, the knuckles of which knock
against one another, she draws her stockings on over
a pair of legs like broomsticks, consumptive legs.
Then, for a long moment, she looks about at the
familiar objects with dying eyes that seem desirous to
take away with them the memory of the places they are
leavingand the door of the apartment closes upon her
with a noise as of farewell. She reaches the foot of the
stairs, where she rests for an instant on a chair. The
concierge, in a bantering tone, assures her that she will
be well in six weeks. She bows and says "yes," an
inaudible "yes." The cab drives up to the door. She[12]
rests her hand on the concierge's wife. I hold her
against the pillow she has behind her back. With wide
open, vacant eyes she vaguely watches the houses pass,
but she does not speak. At the door of the hospital
she tries to alight without assistance. "Can you walk
so far?" the concierge asks. She makes an affirmative
gesture and walks on. Really I cannot imagine where
she procured the strength to walk as she does. Here
we are at last in the great hall, a high, cold, bare,
clean place with a litter standing, all ready for use, in
the centre. I seat her in a straw armchair by a door
with a glazed wicket. A young man opens the wicket,
asks my name and age and writes busily for quarter of
an hour, covering ten or more sheets of paper with
a religious figure at the head. At last, everything is
ready, and I embrace her. A boy takes one arm, the
housekeeper the other. After that, I saw nothing
more.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 27711
Author: Goncourt, Edmond de
Release Date: Jan 5, 2009
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Contributor (Author): Goncourt, Jules de, 1830-1870

History of Woman Suffrage, Volume I

The prolonged slavery of woman is the darkest page in human history. A
survey of the condition of the race through those barbarous periods,
when physical force governed the world, when the motto, "might makes
right," was the law, enables one to account, for the origin of woman's
subjection to man without referring the fact to the general
inferiority of the sex, or Nature's law.
Writers on this question differ as to the cause of the universal
degradation of woman in all periods and nations.
One of the greatest minds of the century has thrown a ray of light on
this gloomy picture by tracing the origin of woman's slavery to the
same principle of selfishness and love of power in man that has thus
far dominated all weaker nations and classes. This brings hope of
final emancipation, for as all nations and classes are gradually, one
after another, asserting and maintaining their independence, the path
is clear for woman to follow. The slavish instinct of an oppressed
class has led her to toil patiently through the ages, giving all and
asking little, cheerfully sharing with man all perils and privations
by land and sea, that husband and sons might attain honor and success.
Justice and freedom for herself is her latest and highest demand.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 28020
Author: Anthony, Susan B. The words of cordial approval from a large
circle of friends, and especially from women well known in periodical
literature, have been to us a constant stimulus during the toilsome
months we have spent in gathering material for these pages. It was our
purpose to have condensed the records of the last twenty years in a
second volume, but so many new questions in regard to Citizenship,
State rights, and National power, indirectly bearing on the political
rights of women, grew out of the civil war, that the arguments and
decisions in Congress and the Supreme Courts have combined to swell
these pages beyond our most liberal calculations, with much valuable
material that can not be condensed nor ignored, making a third volume
inevitable.
By their active labors all through the great conflict, women learned
that they had many interests outside the home. In the camp and
hospital, and the vacant places at their firesides, they saw how
intimately the interests of the State and the home were intertwined;
that as war and all its concomitants were subjects of legislation, it
was only through a voice in the laws that their efforts for peace
could command consideration.
The political significance of the war, and the prolonged discussions
on the vital principles of government involved in the reconstruction,
threw new light on the status of woman in a republic. Under a liberal
interpretation of the XIV. Amendment, women, believing their rights of
citizenship secured, made several attempts to vote in different
States. Those who succeeded were arrested, tried, and convicted. Those
who were denied the right to register their names and deposit their
votes, sued the Inspectors of Election. Others[Pg iv] attempting to practice
law, being denied that right in the States, took their cases up to the
Supreme Court of the United States for adjudication. Others invaded
the pulpit, asking to be ordained, which brought the question of
woman's right to preach before ecclesiastical assemblies. These
various attempts to secure her political and civil rights have called
forth endless discussions on woman's true position in the State, the
church, and the world of work.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 28039
Author: Anthony, Susan B. After faithfully collecting material
for several years, and making the best selections our judgment has
dictated, we are painfully conscious of many imperfections the
critical reader will perceive. But since stereotype plates will not
reflect our growing sense of perfection, the lavish praise of
friends as to the merits of these pages will have its antidote in
the defects we ourselves discover. We may however without egotism
express the belief that this volume will prove specially
interesting in having a large number of contributors from England,
France, Canada and the United States, giving personal experiences
and the progress of legislation in their respective localities.
Into younger hands we must soon resign our work; but as long as
health and vigor remain, we hope to publish a pamphlet report at
the close of each congressional term, containing whatever may be
accomplished by State and National legislation, which can be
readily bound in volumes similar to these, thus keeping a full
record of the prolonged battle until the final victory shall be
achieved. To what extent these publications may be multiplied
depends on when the day of woman's emancipation shall dawn.
For the completion of this work we are indebted to Eliza Jackson
[Pg iv]Eddy, the worthy daughter of that noble philanthropist, Francis
Jackson. He and Charles F. Hovey are the only men who have ever
left a generous bequest to the woman suffrage movement. To Mrs.
Eddy, who bequeathed to our cause two-thirds of her large fortune,
belong all honor and praise as the first woman who has given alike
her sympathy and her wealth to this momentous and far-reaching
reform. This heralds a turn in the tide of benevolence, when,
instead of building churches and monuments to great men, and
endowing colleges for boys, women will make the education and
enfranchisement of their own sex the chief object of their lives.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 28556
Author: Anthony, Susan B. They do far more than
this, for seeds sown in the early days which they describe would have
fallen upon ground so stony that if they had sprung up they would soon
have withered away. The pioneers in the work for the redemption of
women found an unbroken field, not fallow from lying idle, but arid
and barren, filled with the unyielding rocks of prejudice and choked
with the thorns of conservatism. It required many years of labor as
hard as that endured by the forefathers in wresting their lands from
undisturbed nature, before the ground was even broken to receive the
seed. Then followed the long period of persistent tilling and sowing
which brought no reaping until the last quarter of the century, when
the scanty harvest began to be gathered. The yield has seemed small
indeed at the end of each twelvemonth and it is only when viewed in
the aggregate that its size can be appreciated. The condition of woman
to-day compared with that of last year seems unchanged, but contrasted
with that of fifty years ago it presents as great a revolution as the
world has ever witnessed in this length of time.
If the first organized demand for the rights of womanmade at the
memorable convention of Seneca Falls, N. Y., in 1848had omitted the
one for the franchise, those who made it would have lived to see all
granted. It asked for woman the right to have personal freedom, to
acquire an education, to earn a living, to claim her wages, to own
property, to make contracts, to bring suit, to testify in court, to
obtain a divorce for just cause, to possess her children, to claim a
fair share of the accumulations during marriage. An examination of
Chap. XXIV and the following chapters in this volume will show that in
many of the States[Pg xiv] all these privileges are now accorded, and in not
one are all refused, but when this declaration was framed all were
denied by every State. For the past half century there has been a
steady advance in the direction of equal rights for women. In many
instances these have been granted in response to the direct efforts of
women themselves; in others without exertion on their part but through
the example of neighboring States and as a result of the general trend
toward a long-delayed justice. Enough has been accomplished in all of
the above lines to make it absolutely certain that within a few years
women everywhere in the United States will enjoy entire equality of
legal, civil and social rights.
Behind all of these has been the persistent demand for political
rights, and the question naturally arises, "Why do these continue to
be denied? Educated, property-owning, self-reliant and
public-spirited, why are women still refused a voice in the
Government? Citizens in the fullest sense of the word, why are they
deprived of the suffrage in a country whose institutions rest upon
individual representation?"
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 29870
Author: Anthony, Susan B. It is only within the
last century and a half that a constitutional form of government has
been secured by any countries and in the most of those where it now
exists, not excepting the United States, it was won through war and
bloodshed. Largely for this reason its principal advantage was
monopolized by men, who made and carried on war, and who held that
such government must be maintained by physical force and only those
should have a voice in it who could fight for it if necessary. There
were many other reasons why those who had thus secured their right to
a vote should use their new power to withhold it from women, which was
done in every country. Women then had to begin their own contest for
what by the law of justice was theirs as much as men's when government
by constitution was established.
Their struggle lasted for nearly three-quarters of a century in the
United States and half a century in Great Britain, the two largest
constitutional governments, and a shorter time in other countries, but
it was a peaceful revolution. Not a drop of blood was spilled and
toward the end of it, when in Great Britain the only "militancy"
occurred, its leaders gave the strictest orders that human life must
be held sacred. Although at the last the women of Central Europe were
enfranchised as the result of war it was not of their making and their
part in it was not on the battlefield. This was the most unequal
contest that ever was waged, for one side had to fight without
weapons. It was held against women that they were not educated, but
the doors of all institutions of learning were closed against them;[Pg xvi]
that they were not taxpayers, although money-earning occupations were
barred to them and if married they were not allowed to own property.
They were kept in subjection by authority of the Scriptures and were
not permitted to expound them from the woman's point of view, and they
were prevented from pleading their cause on the public platform. When
they had largely overcome these handicaps they found themselves facing
a political fight without political power.
The long story of the early period of this contest will be found in
the preceding volumes of this History and it is one without parallel.
No class of men ever strove seventy or even fifty years for the
suffrage. In every other reform which had to be won through
legislative bodies those who were working for it had the power of the
vote over these bodies. In the Introduction to Volume IV is an
extended review of the helpless position of woman when in 1848 the
first demand for equality of rights was made and her gradual emergence
from its bondage. No sudden revolution could have gained it but only
the slow processes of evolution. The founding of the public school
system with its high schools, from which girls could not be excluded,
solved the question of their education and inevitably led to the
opening of the colleges. In the causes of temperance and anti-slavery
women made their way to the platform and remained to speak for their
own. During the Civil War they entered by thousands the places vacated
by men and retained them partly from necessity and partly from choice.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 29878
Author: Harper, Ida Husted
Release Date: Aug 31, 2009
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Harper, Ida Husted, 1851-1931
