None the less, it is quite
unlike his other writings. All his life long his pen was busy
interpreting nature and pictures and architecture, or persuading to
better views those whom he believed to be in error, or arousing, with
the white heat of a prophet's zeal, those whom he knew to be
unawakened. There is indeed a good deal of the prophet about John
Ruskin. Though essentially an interpreter with a singularly fine
appreciation of beauty, no man of the nineteenth century felt more
keenly that he had a mission, and none was more loyal to what he
believed that mission to be.

While still in college, what seemed a chance incident gave occasion and
direction to this mission. A certain English reviewer had ridiculed the
work of the artist Turner. Now Ruskin held Turner to be the greatest
landscape painter the world had seen, and he immediately wrote a
notable article in his defense. Slowly this article grew into a
pamphlet, and the pamphlet into a book, the first volume of "Modern
Painters." The young man awoke to find himself famous. In the next
few years four more volumes were added to "Modern Painters," and the
other notable series upon art, "The Stones of Venice" and "The Seven
Lamps of Architecture," were sent forth.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 701
Author: Ruskin, John
Release Date: Oct 1, 1996
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/701_6cc18aaf-7a07-4c41-a717-b476fd9d1732.jpg?v=1671248643
murad-the-unlucky-and-other-tales-gb-2129
Murad the Unlucky, and Other Tales

Murad the Unlucky, and Other Tales

Maria Edgeworth came of a lively family which had settled in Ireland
in the latter part of the sixteenth century. Her father at the
age of five-and-twenty inherited the family estates at Edgeworthstown
in 1769. He had snatched an early marriage, which did not prove
happy. He had a little son, whom he was educating upon the principles
set forth in Rousseaus Emile, and a daughter Maria,
who was born on the 1st of January, 1767. He was then living at
Hare Hatch, near Maidenhead. In March, 1773, his first wife died
after giving birth to a daughter named Anna. In July, 1773, he
married again, Honora Sneyd, and went to live in Ireland, taking with
him his daughter Maria, who was then about six years old. Two
years afterwards she was sent from Ireland to a school at Derby.
In April, 1780, her fathers second wife died, and advised him
upon her death-bed to marry her sister Elizabeth. He married his
deceased wifes sister on the next following Christmas Day.
Maria Edgeworth was in that year removed to a school in London, and
her holidays were often spent with her fathers friend Thomas
Day, the author of Sandford and Merton, an eccentric enthusiast
who lived then at Anningsley, in Surrey.
Maria Edgeworthalways a little bodywas conspicuous
among her schoolfellows for quick wit, and was apt alike for study and
invention. She was story-teller general to the community.
In 1782, at the age of fifteen, she left school and went home with her
father and his third wife, who then settled finally at Edgeworthstown.
At Edgeworthstown Richard Lovell Edgeworth now became active in the
direct training of his children, in the improvement of his estate, and
in schemes for the improvement of the country. His eldest daughter,
Maria, showing skill with the pen, he made her more and more his companion
and fellow-worker to good ends. She kept household accounts, had
entrusted to her the whole education of a little brother, wrote stories
on a slate and read them to the family, wiped them off when not approved,
and copied them in ink if they proved popular with the home public.
Miss Edgeworths first printed book was a plea for the education
of women, Letters to Literary Ladies, published in 1795,
when her age was eight-and-twenty. Next year, 1796, working with
her father, she produced the first volume of the Parents
Assistant. In November, 1797, when Miss Edgeworths
age was nearly thirty-one, her father, then aged fifty-three, lost his
third wife, and he married a fourth in the following May. The
fourth wife, at first objected to, was young enough to be a companion
and friend, and between her and Maria Edgeworth a fast friendship came
to be established. Cicely Leeds's head ached as she bent over
the ruffles she was hemming. She was the youngest seamstress in the
room, and wore her hair hanging in two long braids.
It seemed a pity that such girlish shoulders should be learning to
stoop, and that her eyes had to bear such a constant strain. The light
was particularly bad this afternoon. Every curtain was rolled to the
top of its big window, but the dull December sky was as gray as a fog.
Even the snow on the surrounding housetops looked gray and dirty in
the smoky haze.
Now and then Cicely looked up from her work and glanced out of the
window. The cold grayness of the outdoor world made her shiver. It was
a world of sooty chimney-tops as she [14]saw it, with a few chilly
sparrows huddled in a disconsolate row along the eaves. It would soon
be time to be going home, and the only home Cicely had now was a
cheerless little back bedroom in a cheap boarding-house. She dreaded
going back to it. The others were written earlier for juvenile periodicals of wide repute in their timeperiodicals that have now gone the way of almost all young people's magazines, to the land of forgetfulness. Although I recall with pleasure the fact that these little tales enjoyed a considerable popularity when they first appeared, I might just as well as not have called them "The Unlucky Stories." In two or three forms some of the stories that form this collection have appeared in book covers in years past, but always to meet with disaster that was no fault of theirs. Two little books that contained a part of the stories herein reprinted were burned upplates, cuts and allin the Chicago fire of 1871. Another book, with some of these stories in it, was issued by a publisher in Boston, who almost immediately failed, leaving the plates in pawn. These fell into the hands of a man who issued a surreptitious edition, and then into the possession of another, to whom at length I was forced to pay a round sum for the plates, in order to extricate my unfortunate tales from the hands of freebooters. This is therefore the first fair and square issue in book form that these stories have had. For this they have been revised by the author, and printed from plates wholly new by the liberality of the present publisher.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 19896
Author: Eggleston, Edward
Release Date: Nov 22, 2006
Format: eBook
Language: English

Good Cheer Stories Every Child Should Know

The Publishers desire to acknowledge the kindness of the Century
Company, Ginn & Co., the J. W
Winchester, Sept. 29, 1840.
I saw in my dream a rough rocky island rising straight out of
the midst of a roaring sea. In the midst of the island rose
a black steep mountain; dark clouds rested gloomily upon its top;
and into the midst of the clouds it cast forth ever and anon red
flames, which lit them up like the thick curling smoke at the top
of a furnace-chimney. Peals of loud thunder sounded
constantly from these thick clouds; and now and then angry
lightning shot its forked tongue, white, and red, and blue, from
the midst of them, and fell upon the rocks, or the few trees
which just clung to their sides, splitting them violently down,
and scattering the broken and shivered pieces on all sides.
p.
2It was a sad, dreary-looking island at the first view,
and I thought that no one could dwell in it; but as I looked
closer at its shores, I saw that they were covered with children
at play. A soft white sand formed its beach, and there
these children played. I saw no grown people among them;
but the children were all busysome picking up shells; some
playing with the bright-coloured berries of a prickly dwarf-plant
which grew upon those sands; some watching the waves as they ran
up and then fell back again on that shore; some running after the
sea-birds, which ran with quick light feet along the wet sand,
and ever flew off, skimming just along the wave-top, and uttering
a quick sharp note as the children came close upon them:so
some sported in one way, and some in another, but all were busily
at play. He was industrious, but, as his abilities were small, his reward was proportioned thereto. His skill went but little beyond half-soles, heel-taps, and patches. Those who, willing to encourage Thomas, ventured to order from him a new pair of boots or shoes, never repeated the order. That would have been carrying their good wishes for his prosperity rather too far.

As intimated, the income of Thomas Claire was not large. Industrious though he was, the amount earned proved so small that his frugal wife always found it insufficient for an adequate supply of the wants of the family, which consisted of her husband, herself, and three children. It cannot be denied, however, that if Thomas had cared less about his pipe and mug of ale, the supply of bread would have been more liberal. But he had to work hard, and must have some little self-indulgence. At least, so he very unwisely argued. He had also gained the
dogs confidence towards himself.
Edwys mother felt that she must not let
him keep on hoping for the impossible. They
could not take a dog to a city home while
they were building the camp on the lake. It
was equally out of the question either, to
carry him back and forth on the cars, or to
leave him at home with servants while all
the family were away.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 67255
Author: Smith, Jeanie Oliver Davidson
Release Date: Jan 26, 2022
Format: eBook
Language: English
Publisher: Anonymous
Publication Date: 1917
Publisher Country: United States

The Wreck of the Mail Steamer

The Northwest coast of Newfoundland is no favorite with our seafarers
in the fall of the year. The long, straight, rock-bound shore line for
eighty miles in one stretch, offers no shelter whatever even to the
small vessels that ply to and fro along it in pursuit of their
calling. Yet, as great shoals of codfish frequent the cold waters of
the north shore of the Gulf, just as soon as the frozen sea permits it
in spring, swarms of fishing craft, of all sizes, from all the
Newfoundland coasts, and even from as far south as Gloucester, push
their way down North in pursuit of the finny harvest. On the
Newfoundland vessels women and children often come, the women helping
to cure the fish and cook for the men, the children because they cant
be left behind.
Uncle Joe Halfmast had not been North for some years, for he had never
liked the sea and, like many another of our handy fishermen, he had
developed great talents as a carpenter. But this year the people of
Wild Bight were building a church, and had induced Uncle Joe to come
down and lead them. It was a late season; the fall weather had been so
wet and blustersome that the men found it impossible to dry their
fish for shipment as usual, and were consequently late getting ready
for the return South. Moreover the church had to be sheathed in before
Christmas, so that, when spring came round, the work would not have to
be done over again.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 67489
Author: Grenfell, Wilfred Thomason
Release Date: Feb 24, 2022
Format: eBook
Language: English
Publisher: The Sprague Publishing Company
Publication Date: 1923
Publisher Country: United States

Contributors

Illustrator: Fischer, Anton Otto, 1882-1962

Deeds of Daring Done by Girls

Do not think, dear girls,
that because you are girls you may not
have as much courage as your brothers.
I believe that quite as stout hearts beat beneath
muslin frocks as under stuff jackets. If you train up a
youth in this way, he will go into reporting
with too full a knowledge of the newspaper
business, with no illusions concerning it,
and with no ignorant enthusiasms, but with
a keen and justifiable impression that he is[2]
not paid enough for what he does. And he
will only do what he is paid to do. Now,
you cannot pay a good reporter for what he
does, because he does not work for pay. He
works for his paper. He gives his time, his
health, his brains, his sleeping hours, and his
eating hours, and life sometimes, to get news
for it. He thinks the sun rises only that men
may have light by which to read it. But if
he has been in a newspaper office from his
youth up, he finds out before he becomes a
reporter that this is not so, and loses his real
value. He should come right out of the
University where he has been doing campus
notes for the college weekly, and be pitchforked
out into city work without knowing
whether the Battery is at Harlem or Hunters
Point, and with the idea that he is a Moulder
of Public Opinion and that the Power of the
Press is greater than the Power of Money,
and that the few lines he writes are of more
value in the Editors eyes than the column
of advertising on the last page, which they
are not.
