Oh dear! I shall be late! It was
true, too. She had a little thin face and a little thin body, thin light hair
and a sour expression. Her hair was yellow, and her face was yellow because she
had been born in India and had always been ill in one way or another. Her
father had held a position under the English Government and had always been
busy and ill himself, and her mother had been a great beauty who cared only to
go to parties and amuse herself with gay people. She had not wanted a little
girl at all, and when Mary was born she handed her over to the care of an Ayah,
who was made to understand that if she wished to please the Mem Sahib she must
keep the child out of sight as much as possible. Her home was a large,
dull, tall one, in a large, dull square, where all the houses were alike,
and all the sparrows were alike, and where all the door-knockers made the
same heavy sound, and on still daysand nearly all the days were
stillseemed to resound through the entire row in which the knock
was knocked. On Miss Minchin's door there was a brass plate. On the brass
plate there was inscribed in black letters,

Little Sara Crewe never went in or out of the house without reading that
door-plate and reflecting upon it. By the time she was twelve, she had
decided that all her trouble arose because, in the first place, she was
not Select, and in the second she was not a Young Lady. When she was
eight years old, she had been brought to Miss Minchin as a pupil, and left
with her. Her papa had brought her all the way from India. Her mamma had
died when she was a baby, and her papa had kept her with him as long as he
could. And then, finding the hot climate was making her very delicate, he
had brought her to England and left her with Miss Minchin, to be part of
the Select Seminary for Young Ladies. Sara, who had always been a sharp
little child, who remembered things, recollected hearing him say that he
had not a relative in the world whom he knew of, and so he was obliged to
place her at a boarding-school, and he had heard Miss Minchin's
establishment spoken of very highly. The same day, he took Sara out and
bought her a great many beautiful clothesclothes so grand and rich
that only a very young and inexperienced man would have bought them for a
mite of a child who was to be brought up in a boarding-school. But the
fact was that he was a rash, innocent young man, and very sad at the
thought of parting with his little girl, who was all he had left to remind
him of her beautiful mother, whom he had dearly loved. And he wished her
to have everything the most fortunate little girl could have; and so, when
the polite saleswomen in the shops said, Here is our very latest thing in
hats, the plumes are exactly the same as those we sold to Lady Diana
Sinclair yesterday, he immediately bought what was offered to him, and
paid whatever was asked. The consequence was that Sara had a most
extraordinary wardrobe. Her dresses were silk and velvet and India
cashmere, her hats and bonnets were covered with bows and plumes, her
small undergarments were adorned with real lace, and she returned in the
cab to Miss Minchin's with a doll almost as large as herself, dressed
quite as grandly as herself, too.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 137
Author: Burnett, Frances Hodgson
Release Date: Mar 8, 2006
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/137_758d68db-5cdd-4601-9dc6-e3825d0031a9.jpg?v=1671247479
a-little-princess-gb-146
A Little Princess

A Little Princess\r - Being the whole story of Sara Crewe now told for the first time

Once on a dark winter's day, when the yellow fog hung so thick and
heavy in the streets of London that the lamps were lighted and the shop
windows blazed with gas as they do at night, an odd-looking little girl
sat in a cab with her father and was driven rather slowly through the
big thoroughfares.

She sat with her feet tucked under her, and leaned against her father,
who held her in his arm, as she stared out of the window at the passing
people with a queer old-fashioned thoughtfulness in her big eyes.

She was such a little girl that one did not expect to see such a look
on her small face. I
say written for children because the new psychological
business of writing about them as though
they were small pills or hatched in some especially
scientific method is extremely popular to-day.
Writing for children rather than about
them is very difficult as everybody who has tried
it knows. It can only be done, I am convinced,
by somebody having a great deal of the child
in his own outlook and sensibilities. Such was
the author of The Little Duke and The
Dove in the Eagles Nest, such the author of
A Flatiron for a Farthing, and The Story
of a Short Life. Such, above all, the author of
Alice in Wonderland. Grownups imagine
that they can do the trick by adopting baby[viii]
language and talking down to their very critical
audience. There never was a greater mistake.
The imagination of the author must be a childs
imagination and yet maturely consistent, so that
the White Queen in Alice, for instance, is
seen just as a child would see her, but she continues
always herself through all her distressing
adventures. The supreme touch of the white
rabbit pulling on his white gloves as he hastens
is again absolutely the childs vision, but the
white rabbit as guide and introducer of Alices
adventures belongs to mature grown insight.
Geniuses are rare and, without being at all
an undue praiser of times past, one can say without
hesitation that until the appearance of Hugh
Lofting, the successor of Miss Yonge, Mrs.
Ewing, Mrs. Gatty and Lewis Carroll had not
appeared. I remember the delight with which
some six months ago I picked up the first Dolittle
book in the Hampshire bookshop at
Smith College in Northampton. One of Mr.
Loftings pictures was quite enough for me.
The picture that I lighted upon when I first
opened the book was the one of the monkeys[ix]
making a chain with their arms across the gulf.
Then I looked further and discovered Bumpo
reading fairy stories to himself. And then
looked again and there was a picture of John
Dolittles house.
But pictures are not enough although most
authors draw so badly that if one of them happens
to have the genius for line that Mr. Lofting
shows there must be, one feels, something in his
writing as well. There is. You cannot read the
first paragraph of the book, which begins in the
right way Once upon a time without knowing
that Mr. Lofting believes in his story quite
as much as he expects you to. That is the first
essential for a story teller. Then you discover
as you read on that he has the right eye for the
right detail. What child-inquiring mind could
resist this intriguing sentence to be found on the
second page of the book:
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 501
Author: Lofting, Hugh
Release Date: Apr 1, 1996
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/501_cf139542-0ef3-44b8-a969-72cff37b4958.jpg?v=1671248233
the-emerald-city-of-oz-gb-517
The Emerald City of Oz

The Emerald City of Oz

Perhaps I should admit on the title page that this book is "By L.
Frank Baum and his correspondents," for I have used many suggestions
conveyed to me in letters from children. They are also logical and interesting.
So I have used them whenever I could find an opportunity, and it is but
just that I acknowledge my indebtedness to my little friends.

My, what imaginations these children have developed! Sometimes I am
fairly astounded by their daring and genius. There will be no lack of
fairy-tale authors in the future, I am sure. My readers have told me
what to do with Dorothy, and Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, and I have obeyed
their mandates. Children love these stories because
children have helped to create them. My readers know what they want
and realize that I try to please them. Perhaps you
wonder why it is that so many stories are told of "once on a time", and
so few of these days in which we live; but that is easily explained.

In the old days, when the world was young, there were no automobiles
nor flying-machines to make one wonder; nor were there railway trains,
nor telephones, nor mechanical inventions of any sort to keep people
keyed up to a high pitch of excitement. Men and women lived simply and
quietly. They were Nature's children, and breathed fresh air into
their lungs instead of smoke and coal gas; and tramped through green
meadows and deep forests instead of riding in street cars; and went to
bed when it grew dark and rose with the sun--which is vastly different
from the present custom. They become Americanized less easily than children of other
nationalities, and both in dress and outward appearance retain their
foreign look, while few, even after several years residence, acquire even
a passable knowledge of the English language.

In undertaking, therefore, to describe this phase of street life, I found,
at the outset, unusual difficulty on account of my inadequate information.
But I was fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of two prominent
Italian gentlemen, long resident in New YorkMr. A. E. Cerqua,
superintendent of the Italian school at the Five Points, and through his
introduction, of Mr. G. F. Secchi de Casale, editor of the well-known Eco
dItaliafrom whom I obtained full and trustworthy information. A
series of articles contributed by Mr. De Casale to his paper, on the
Italian street children, in whom he has long felt a patriotic and
sympathetic interest, I have found of great service, and I freely
acknowledge that, but for the information thus acquired, I should have
been unable to write the present volume.

My readers will learn with surprise, probably, of the hard life led by
these children, and the inhuman treatment which they receive from the
speculators who buy them from their parents in Italy. It is not without
reason that Mr. De Casale speaks of them as the White Slaves of New
York. I may add, in passing, that they are quite distinct from the Italian
bootblacks and newsboys who are to be found in Chatham Street and the
vicinity of the City Hall Park. These last are the children of resident
Italians of the poorer class, and are much better off than the musicians.
It is from their ranks that the Italian school, before referred to, draws
      its pupils.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 671
Author: Alger, Horatio
Release Date: Mar 18, 2006
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/671_2dae05b5-acf0-4ed7-8b40-d1e1cfc6d2ca.jpg?v=1671248587
the-king-of-the-golden-river-gb-701
The King of the Golden River

The King of the Golden River

"The King of the Golden River" is a delightful fairy tale told with all
Ruskin's charm of style, his appreciation of mountain scenery, and with
his usual insistence upon drawing a moral. None the less, it is quite
unlike his other writings. All his life long his pen was busy
interpreting nature and pictures and architecture, or persuading to
better views those whom he believed to be in error, or arousing, with
the white heat of a prophet's zeal, those whom he knew to be
unawakened. There is indeed a good deal of the prophet about John
Ruskin. Though essentially an interpreter with a singularly fine
appreciation of beauty, no man of the nineteenth century felt more
keenly that he had a mission, and none was more loyal to what he
believed that mission to be.

While still in college, what seemed a chance incident gave occasion and
direction to this mission. A certain English reviewer had ridiculed the
work of the artist Turner. Now Ruskin held Turner to be the greatest
landscape painter the world had seen, and he immediately wrote a
notable article in his defense. Slowly this article grew into a
pamphlet, and the pamphlet into a book, the first volume of "Modern
Painters." The young man awoke to find himself famous. In the next
few years four more volumes were added to "Modern Painters," and the
other notable series upon art, "The Stones of Venice" and "The Seven
Lamps of Architecture," were sent forth.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 701
Author: Ruskin, John
Release Date: Oct 1, 1996
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/701_6cc18aaf-7a07-4c41-a717-b476fd9d1732.jpg?v=1671248643
somebody-s-little-girl-gb-702
Somebody's Little Girl

Somebody's Little Girl

If I were just to tell the things that Bessie Bell remembered I should
tell you some very strange things. One day they had the good
fortune to find in the sandpit a strange creature. Its eyes were on long horns
like snails eyes, and it could move them in and out like telescopes. It
had ears like a bats ears, and its tubby body was shaped like a
spiders and covered with thick soft furand it had hands and feet
like a monkeys. It told the childrenwhose names were Cyril,
Robert, Anthea, and Janethat it was a Psammead or sand-fairy. (Psammead
is pronounced Sammy-ad.) It was old, old, old, and its birthday was almost at
the very beginning of everything. And it had been buried in the sand for
thousands of years. But it still kept its fairylikeness, and part of this
fairylikeness was its power to give people whatever they wished for. You know
fairies have always been able to do this. Cyril, Robert, Anthea, and Jane now
found their wishes come true; but, somehow, they never could think of just the
right things to wish for, and their wishes sometimes turned out very oddly
indeed. In the end their unwise wishings landed them in what Robert called
a very tight place indeed, and the Psammead consented to help
them out of it in return for their promise never never to ask it to grant them
any more wishes, and never to tell anyone about it, because it did not want to
be bothered to give wishes to anyone ever any more.
