I offer it to those enthusiastic admirers of Wagner who are unable
to follow his ideas, and do not in the least understand the dilemma of
Wotan, though they are filled with indignation at the irreverence of the
Philistines who frankly avow that they find the remarks of the god too
often tedious and nonsensical. Now to be devoted to Wagner merely as a dog
is devoted to his master, sharing a few elementary ideas, appetites and
emotions with him, and, for the rest, reverencing his superiority without
understanding it, is no true Wagnerism. Yet nothing better is possible
without a stock of ideas common to master and disciple. Unfortunately, the
ideas of the revolutionary Wagner of 1848 are taught neither by the
education nor the experience of English and American gentlemen-amateurs,
who are almost always political mugwumps, and hardly ever associate with
revolutionists. The earlier attempts to translate his numerous pamphlets
and essays into English, resulted in ludicrous mixtures of pure nonsense
with the absurdest distorsions of his ideas into the ideas of the
translators. We now have a translation which is a masterpiece of
interpretation and an eminent addition to our literature; but that is not
because its author, Mr. Ashton Ellis, knows the German dictionary better
than his predecessors. He is simply in possession of Wagner's ideas, which
      were to them inconceivable.

All I pretend to do in this book is to impart the ideas which are most
likely to be lacking in the conventional Englishman's equipment. I came by
them myself much as Wagner did, having learnt more about music than about
anything else in my youth, and sown my political wild oats subsequently in
the revolutionary school. This combination is not common in England; and
as I seem, so far, to be the only publicly articulate result of it, I
venture to add my commentary to what has already been written by musicians
who are no revolutionists, and revolutionists who are no musicians. The Muses, contrary to all other Ladies, pay no
Distinction to Dress, and never partially mistake the Pertness of
Embroidery for Wit, nor the Modesty of Want for Dulness. The author
had devoted himself for a long time to the study of Beethoven and
carefully scrutinized all manner of books, publications, manuscripts,
etc., in order to derive the greatest possible information about the hero.
He can say confidently that he conned every existing publication of value.
His notes made during his readings grew voluminous, and also his amazement
at the wealth of Beethovens observations comparatively unknown to his
admirers because hidden away, like concealed violets, in books which have
been long out of print and for whose reproduction there is no urgent call.
These observations are of the utmost importance for the understanding of
Beethoven, in whom man and artist are inseparably united. Within the pages
of this little book are included all of them which seemed to possess
value, either as expressions of universal truths or as evidence of the
character of Beethoven or his compositions. Beethoven is brought more
directly before our knowledge by these his own words than by the diffuse
books which have been written about him. For this reason the compiler has
added only the necessary explanatory notes, and (on the advice of
professional friends) the remarks introductory to the various subdivisions
of the book. He dispensed with a biographical introduction; there are
plenty of succinct biographies, which set forth the circumstances of the
masters life easily to be had. Those who wish to penetrate farther into
the subject would do well to read the great work by Thayer, the foundation
of all Beethoven biography (in the new revision now making by Deiters), or
the critical biography by Marx, as revised by Behncke. In sifting the
material it was found that it fell naturally into thirteen subdivisions.
In arranging the succession of utterances care was had to group related
subjects. By this means unnecessary interruptions in the train of thought
were avoided and interesting comparisons made possible. To this end it was
important that time, place and circumstances of every word should be
      conscientiously set down.

Concerning the selection of material let it be said that in all cases of
doubt the authenticity of every utterance was proved; Beethoven is easily
recognizable in the form and contents of his sayings. Attention must be
directed to two matters in particular: after considerable reflection the
compiler decided to include in the collection a few quotations which
Beethoven copied from books which he read. From the fact that he took the
trouble to write them down, we may assume that they had a fascination for
him, and were greeted with lively emotion as being admirable expressions
of thoughts which had moved him. They are very few, and the fact that they
are quotations is plainly indicated. By copying them into his note-books
Beethoven as much as stored them away in the thesaurus of his thoughts,
and so they may well have a place here. A word touching the use of the
three famous letters to Bettina von Arnim, the peculiarities of which
differentiate them from the entire mass of Beethovens correspondence and
compel an inquiry into their genuineness: As a correspondent Bettina von
Arnim has a poor reputation since the discovery of her pretty forgery,
Goethes Briefwechsel mit einem Kinde (Goethes Correspondence with a
Child). In this alleged Correspondence she made use of fragmentary
material which was genuine, pieced it out with her own inventions, and
even went so far as to turn into letters poems written by Goethe to her
and other women. The genuineness of a poem by Beethoven to Bettina is
indubitable; it will be found in the chapter entitled Concerning Texts.
Doubt was thrown on the letters immediately on their appearance in 1839.

Bettina could have dissipated all suspicion had she produced the originals
and remained silent. One letter, however, that dated February 10, 1811,
afterward came to light. Bettina had given it to Philipp von Nathusius. It
      had always been thought the most likely one, of the set to be authentic;
the compiler has therefore, used it without hesitation. From the other
letters, in which a mixture of the genuine and the fictitious must be
assumed so long as the originals are not produced, passages have been
taken which might have been thus constructed by Beethoven. On the
contrary, the voluminous communications of Bettina to Goethe, in which she
relates her conversations with Beethoven, were scarcely used. It is
significant, so far as these are concerned, that, according to Bettinas
own statement, when she read the letter to him before sending it off,
Beethoven cried out, Did I really say that? If so I must have had a
      raptus.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 3528
Author: Beethoven, Ludwig van
Release Date: Nov 1, 2002
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Kerst, Friedrich, 1870-1961 , Krehbiel, Henry Edward, 1854-1923

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/3528_7df103a0-c2a0-49df-b98c-e98cee220f46.jpg?v=1671256145
essays-before-a-sonata-gb-3673
Essays Before a Sonata

Essays Before a Sonata

Charles Ives (1874-1954) was probably one of the most
psycho-intellectually brilliant, imaginative and flexible Americans to
ever "walk the land of freedom." A graduate of Yale, he became a
multi-millionaire in the American insurance industry, introducing
brilliant innovations within that industry. At the time of its composition, Ives' music was
probably the most radically modern in history, and by itself had enough
material to serve as the foundation of modern 20th century music. For
example, at the turn of the century, this eccentric composer created
band works featuring multiple melodies of multiple time signatures
opposing and complimenting each other within the same piece. Ives was
also a revolutionary atonal composer, who created, essentially without
precedent, many atonal works that not only pre-date those of
Schoenberg, but are just as sophisticated, and arguably even more so,
than those of the 12-tone serialist.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 3673
Author: Ives, Charles
Release Date: Jan 1, 2003
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/3673_98a6fcc0-c12e-4409-8bed-701d9777aeaf.jpg?v=1671256497
letters-of-franz-liszt-volume-1-gb-3689
Letters of Franz Liszt -- Volume 1

Letters of Franz Liszt -- Volume 1\r - from Paris to Rome: Years of Travel as a Virtuoso

This should be the first thing seen when anyone opens the book.
Do not change or edit it without written permission. It is a short, glowing, and generous sketch,
from the hand of Franz Liszt, (who, considered in the double light of
composer and performer, has no living equal,) of the original and romantic
Chopin; the most ethereal, subtle, and delicate among our modern
tone-poets. It is a rare thing for a great artist to write on art, to
leave the passionate worlds of sounds or colors for the colder realm of
words; rarer still for him to abdicate, even temporarily, his own throne,
to stand patiently and hold aloft the blazing torch of his own genius, to
illume the gloomy grave of another: yet this has Liszt done through love
      for Chopin.

It is a matter of considerable interest to note how the nervous and agile
fingers, accustomed to sovereign rule over the keys, handle the pen; how
the musician feels as a man; how he estimates art and artists. Liszt is a
man of extensive culture, vivid imagination, and great knowledge of the
world; and, in addition to their high artistic value, his lines glow with
poetic fervor, with impassioned eloquence. His musical criticisms are
refined and acute, but without repulsive technicalities or scientific
terms, ever sparkling with the poetic ardor of the generous soul through
which the discriminating, yet appreciative awards were poured. Ah! in
these days of degenerate rivalries and bitter jealousies, let us welcome a
proof of affection so tender as his "Life of Chopin"!

It would be impossible for the reader of this book to remain ignorant of
the exactions of art. While, through its eloquence and subtle analysis of
character, it appeals to the cultivated literary tastes of our people, it
opens for them a dazzling perspective into that strange world of tones, of
whose magical realm they know, comparatively speaking, so little. It is
intelligible to all who think or feel; requiring no knowledge of music for
      its comprehension.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4386
Author: Liszt, Franz
Release Date: Aug 1, 2003
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Translator: Cook, Martha Walker, 1806-1874

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/4386_0abee515-8b05-45fa-9466-38e6a96fb94e.jpg?v=1671277953
on-conducting-ueber-das-dirigiren-a-treatise-on-style-in-the-execution-of-classical-music-gb-4523
On Conducting (Üeber Das Dirigiren) : A Treatise on Style in the Execution of Classical Music

On Conducting (Üeber Das Dirigiren) : A Treatise on Style in the Execution of Classical Music

You provide, in accordance with paragraph 1.F.3, a full refund of
any money paid for a work or a replacement copy, if a defect in the
electronic work is discovered and reported to you within 90 days of
        receipt of the work.

1.F.3. The former may
hopefully pursue an ideal, the latter must rest satisfied with a
compromise between the desirable and the necessary. No doubt, it
is possible to thoroughly digest all the requisite material, and
then present it in a perfect, beautiful form. But this can only
be done at a terrible loss, at a sacrifice of truth and
trustworthiness. My guiding principle has been to place before
the reader the facts collected by me as well as the conclusions
at which I arrived. This will enable him to see the subject in
all its bearings, with all its pros and cons, and to draw his own
conclusions, should mine not obtain his approval. Unless an
author proceeds in this way, the reader never knows how far he
may trust him, how far the evidence justifies his judgment. For
not to speak of cheats and foolsthe best informed are apt to
make assertions unsupported or insufficiently supported by facts,
and the wisest cannot help seeing things through the coloured
spectacles of their individuality. The foregoing remarks are
intended to explain my method, not to excuse carelessness of
literary workmanship. Chopin's violence was psychic, a travailing and groaning of
the spirit; the bright roughness of adventure was missing from his
quotidian existence. The tragedy was within. One recalls Maurice
Maeterlinck: "Whereas most of our life is passed far from blood, cries
and swords, and the tears of men have become silent, invisible and
almost spiritual." Chopin went from Poland to Francefrom Warsaw to
Pariswhere, finally, he was borne to his grave in Pere la Chaise. He
lived, loved and died; and not for him were the perils, prizes and
fascinations of a hero's career. He fought his battles within the walls
of his soulwe may note and enjoy them in his music. His outward state
was not niggardly of incident though his inner life was richer,
nourished as it was in the silence and the profound unrest of a being
that irritably resented every intrusion. There were events that left
ineradicable impressions upon his nature, upon his work: his early
love, his sorrow at parting from parents and home, the shock of the
Warsaw revolt, his passion for George Sand, the death of his father and
of his friend Matuszynski, and the rupture with Madame Sandthese were
crises of his history. All else was but an indeterminate factor in the
scheme of his earthly sojourn. Chopin though not an anchorite resembled
Flaubert, being both proud and timid; he led a detached life, hence his
art was bold and violent. Unlike Liszt he seldom sought the glamor of
the theatre, and was never in such public view as his maternal admirer,
Sand. He was Frederic Francois Chopin, composer, teacher of piano and a
lyric genius of the highest range.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4939
Author: Huneker, James
Release Date: Jan 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/4939_90c4099b-f70f-4cff-b65b-e7ad8432876d.jpg?v=1671279295
brandenburg-concerto-no-2-in-f-major-bwv-1047-gb-4949
Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F Major, BWV 1047

Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F Major, BWV 1047

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4949
Author: Bach, Johann Sebastian
Release Date: Jan 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/bookcover_802a9513-93cf-4466-b1df-cbcc2db28168.jpg?v=1671279316
string-quartet-no-02-in-g-major-opus-18-gb-4950
String Quartet No. 02 in G major Opus 18

String Quartet No. 02 in G major Opus 18

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4950
Author: Beethoven, Ludwig van
Release Date: Jan 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/bookcover_0988f84c-3f10-42ed-a629-2fb5cfdeea62.jpg?v=1671279319
string-quartet-no-17-in-b-flat-major-hunt-k-458-gb-4951
String Quartet No. 17 in B flat major, "Hunt", K. 458

String Quartet No. 17 in B flat major, "Hunt", K. 458

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4951
Author: Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus
Release Date: Jan 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/bookcover_7670e126-198e-4278-95d9-1c37386ed3c7.jpg?v=1671279321
frederick-chopin-as-a-man-and-musician-volume-2-gb-4972
Frederick Chopin, as a Man and Musician — Volume 2

Frederick Chopin, as a Man and Musician — Volume 2

THE loves of famous men and women, especially of those connected
with literature and the fine arts, have always excited much
curiosity. In the majority of cases the poet's and artist's
choice of a partner falls on a person who is incapable of
comprehending his aims and sometimes even of sympathising with
his striving. The question "why poets are so apt to choose their
mates, not for any similarity of poetical endowment, but for
qualities which might make the happiness of the rudest
handicrafts-man as well as that of the ideal craftsman" has
perhaps never been better answered than by Nathaniel Hawthorne,
who remarks that "at his highest elevation the poet needs no
human intercourse; but he finds it dreary to descend, and be a
stranger." Still, this is by no means a complete solution of the
problem which again and again presents itself and challenges our
ingenuity. Chopin and George Sand's case belongs to the small
minority of loves where both parties are distinguished
practitioners of ideal crafts. Great would be the mistake,
however, were we to assume that the elective affinities of such
lovers are easily discoverable On the contrary, we have here
another problem, one which, owing to the higher, finer, and more
varied factors that come into play, is much more difficult to
solve than the first. But before we can engage in solving the
problem, it must be properly propounded. Now, to ascertain facts
about the love-affairs of poets and artists is the very reverse
of an easy task; and this is so partly because the parties
naturally do not let outsiders into all their secrets, and partly
because romantic minds and imaginative litterateurs are always
busy developing plain facts and unfounded rumours into wonderful
myths. The picturesqueness of the story, the piquancy of the
anecdote, is generally in inverse proportion to the narrator's
knowledge of the matter in question. In short, truth is only too
often most unconscionably sacrificed to effect. Accounts, for
instance, such as L. Enault and Karasowski have given of Chopin's
first meeting with George Sand can be recommended only to those
who care for amusing gossip about the world of art, and do not
mind whether what they read is the simple truth or not, nay, do
not mind even whether it has any verisimilitude. Nevertheless, we
will give these gentlemen a hearing, and then try if we cannot
find some firmer ground to stand on.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4972
Author: Niecks, Frederick
Release Date: Jan 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/4972_4ba511cc-16e8-415c-8b25-cee70862bcba.jpg?v=1671279378
frederick-chopin-as-a-man-and-musician-complete-gb-4973
Frederick Chopin, as a Man and Musician — Complete

Frederick Chopin, as a Man and Musician — Complete

BESIDES minor corrections, the present edition contains the correction of
the day and year of Frederick Francis Chopin's birth, which have been
discovered since the publication of the second edition of this work.
According to the baptismal entry in the register of the Brochow parish
church, he who became the great pianist and immortal composer was born on
February 22, 1810. This date has been generally accepted in Poland, and is
to be found on the medal struck on the occasion of the semi-centenary
celebration of the master's death. Owing to a misreading of musicus for
magnificus in the published copy of the document, its trustworthiness has
been doubted elsewhere, but, I believe, without sufficient cause. The
strongest argument that could be urged against the acceptance of the date
would be the long interval between birth and baptism, which did not take
place till late in April, and the consequent possibility of an error in
the registration. This, however, could only affect the day, and perhaps
the month, not the year. It is certainly a very curious circumstance that
Fontana, a friend of Chopin's in his youth and manhood, Karasowski, at
least an acquaintance, if not an intimate friend, of the family (from whom
he derived much information), Fetis, a contemporary lexicographer, and
apparently Chopin's family, and even Chopin himself, did not know the date
      of the latter's birth.

Where the character of persons and works of art are concerned, nothing is
more natural than differences of opinion. Bias and inequality of knowledge
sufficiently account for them. For my reading of the character of George
Sand, I have been held up as a monster of moral depravity; for my daring
to question the exactitude of Liszt's biographical facts, I have been
severely sermonised; for my inability to regard Chopin as one of the great
composers of songs, and continue uninterruptedly in a state of ecstatic
admiration, I have been told that the publication of my biography of the
master is a much to be deplored calamity. Of course, the moral monster and
author of the calamity cannot pretend to be an unbiassed judge in the
case; but it seems to him that there may be some exaggeration and perhaps
even some misconception in these accusations.

As to George Sand, I have not merely made assertions, but have earnestly
laboured to prove the conclusions at which I reluctantly arrived. Are
George Sand's pretentions to self-sacrificing saintliness, and to purely
maternal feelings for Musset, Chopin, and others to be accepted in spite
of the fairy-tale nature of her "Histoire," and the misrepresentations of
her "Lettres d'un Voyageur" and her novels "Elle et lui" and "Lucrezia
Floriani"; in spite of the adverse indirect testimony of some of her other
novels, and the adverse direct testimony of her "Correspondance"; and in
spite of the experiences and firm beliefs of her friends, Liszt included?
Let us not overlook that charitableness towards George Sand implies
uncharitableness towards Chopin, place. Need I say anything on the
extraordinary charge made against menamely, that in some cases I
have preferred the testimony of less famous men to that of Liszt? Are
genius, greatness, and fame the measures of trustworthiness?

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4973
Author: Niecks, Frederick
Release Date: Jan 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/4973_71a02b51-9da1-4472-aa52-11830776de2e.jpg?v=1671279379
my-life-volume-2-gb-5144
My Life — Volume 2

My Life — Volume 2

MINNA had been lucky enough to find quarters near Zurich which
corresponded very closely with the wishes I had so emphatically
expressed before leaving. The house was situated in the parish of Enge,
a good fifteen minutes' walk from the town, on a site overlooking the
lake, and was an old-fashioned hostelry called 'Zum Abendstern,'
belonging to a certain Frau Hirel, who was a pleasant old lady. The
second floor, which was quite self-contained and very quiet, offered us
humble but adequate accommodations for a modest rent.
I arrived early in the morning and found Minna still in bed. She was
anxious to know whether I had returned simply out of pity; but I
quickly succeeded in obtaining her promise that she would never again
refer to what had taken place. She was soon quite herself again when
she began to show me the progress she had made in arranging the rooms.
Our position had for some years been growing more comfortable, in spite
of the fact that at this time various difficulties again arose, and our
domestic happiness seemed tolerably secure. It was the desire of both
of us that these details of my life should be accessible to our family
and to our sincere and trusted friends; and we decided therefore, in
order to provide against a possible destruction of the one manuscript,
to have a small number of copies printed at our own expense. It was only possible to restore, and to enable others
to enjoy this charma charm so novel, even to those already
conversant with Mozart's life, that the most familiar incidents acquire
fresh zest from itby an ungarbled edition of these letters. This is
what I now offer, feeling convinced that it will be welcome not only to
the mass of Mozart's admirers, but also to professional musicians; for in
them alone is strikingly set forth how Mozart lived and labored, enjoyed
and suffered, and this with a degree of vivid and graphic reality which no
biography, however complete, could ever succeed in giving. Who does not
know the varied riches of Mozart's life? All that agitated the minds of
men in that daynay, all that now moves, and ever will move, the
heart of manvibrated with fresh pulsation, and under the most
manifold forms, in his sensitive soul, and mirrored itself in a series of
letters, which indeed rather resemble a journal than a correspondence.

This artist, Nature had gifted in all respects with the most clear and
vigorous intellect that ever man possessed. Even in a language which he
had not so fully mastered as to acquire the facility of giving expression
to his ideas, he contrived to relate to others all that he saw and heard,
and felt and thought, with surprising clearness and the most charming
sprightliness, combined with talent and good feeling. Above all, in his
letters to his father when travelling, we meet with the most minute
delineations of countries and people, of the progress of the fine arts,
especially in the theatres and in music; we also see the impulses of his
own heart and a hundred other things which, in fascination, and universal
as well as artistic interest, have scarcely a parallel in our literature.
The style may fail to a certain degree in polish, that is, in definite
purpose in expressing what he wished to say in an attractive or congenial
form,an art, however, which Mozart so thoroughly understood in his
music. His mode of writing, especially in the later letters from Vienna,
is often very slovenly, evidencing how averse the Maestro was to the task.
Still these letters are manifestly the unconstrained, natural, and simple
outpourings of his heart, delightfully recalling to our minds all the
sweetness and pathos, the spirit and grace, which have a thousand times
enchanted us in the music of Mozart. The accounts of his visit to Paris
may, indeed, lay claim to a certain aesthetic value, for they are written
throughout with visible zest in his own descriptions, and also with wit,
and charm, and characteristic energy. As these combined merits can only
become apparent by an ungarbled series of the letters, I have resolved,
after many long years of zealous research in collecting them, to undertake
the work, that is, to publish the letters entire that have come to
      my knowledge.

It now only remains for me to give some words of explanation as to the
method I have pursued in editing them.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product existence
of twenty-five years. Through all this period at public representations
I have occupied stall D-15 on the ground floor as reviewer of musical
affairs for The New York Tribune newspaper. I have, therefore, been a
witness of the vicissitudes through which the institution has passed
in a quarter-century, and a chronicler of all significant musical
things which were done within its walls. I have seen the failure of
the artistic policy to promote which the magnificent theater was built;
the revolution accomplished by the stockholders under the leadership
of Leopold Damrosch; the progress of a German rgime, which did much
to develop tastes and create ideals which, till its coming, were
little-known quantities in American art and life; the overthrow of that
rgime in obedience to the command of fashion; the subsequent dawn and
development of the liberal and comprehensive policy which marked the
climax of the career of Maurice Grau as an operatic director, I have
witnessed since then, many of the fruits of wise endeavor and astute
management frittered away by managerial incapacity and greed, and fad
and fashion come to rule again, where for a brief, but eventful period,
serious artistic interest and endeavor had been dominant.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 5995
Author: Krehbiel, Henry Edward
Release Date: May 29, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/5995_d1bc12f8-e677-4d1d-bd8f-20f72f980601.jpg?v=1671281973
quartet-in-a-minor-op-41-no-1-gb-6084
Quartet in a minor, op. 41, no. 1

Quartet in a minor, op. 41, no. 1

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 6084
Author: Schumann, Robert
Release Date: Jul 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/bookcover_3581a7ec-960c-4e9a-8942-14c6cba16892.jpg?v=1671282262
the-wagner-story-book-firelight-tales-of-the-great-music-dramas-gb-6443
The Wagner Story Book: Firelight Tales of the Great Music Dramas

The Wagner Story Book: Firelight Tales of the Great Music Dramas

There is a certain little girl who sometimes tries to find out when I
am not over busy, so that she may ask me to tell her a story. She is
kind enough to say that she likes my stories, and this so flatters my
vanity that I like nothing better than telling them to her. For we shall be gainers, I take it, if this can be proved.'
Aristotle certainly knew the passage, and it looks as if his treatise on
poetry was an answer to Plato's challenge.

Few of the great works of ancient Greek literature are easy reading. They
nearly all need study and comment, and at times help from a good teacher,
before they yield up their secret. And the Poetics cannot be
accounted an exception. For one thing the treatise is fragmentary. It
originally consisted of two books, one dealing with Tragedy and Epic, the
other with Comedy and other subjects. We possess only the first. For
another, even the book we have seems to be unrevised and unfinished. The
style, though luminous, vivid, and in its broader division systematic, is
not that of a book intended for publication. Like most of Aristotle's
extant writing, it suggests the MS. of an experienced lecturer, full of
jottings and adscripts, with occasional phrases written carefully out, but
never revised as a whole for the general reader. Even to accomplished
scholars the meaning is often obscure, as may be seen by a comparison of
the three editions recently published in England, all the work of savants
of the first eminence, (1) or, still more strikingly, by a study of the
long series of misunderstandings and overstatements and corrections which
form the history of the Poetics since the Renaissance.

      (1) Prof. Butcher, 1895 and 1898; Prof. Bywater, 1909; and Prof.
      Margoliouth, 1911.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 6763
Author: Aristotle, 384 BCE-322 BCE
Release Date: Oct 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Translator: Bywater, Ingram, 1840-1914

String Quartet No. 09 in C major Opus 59

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 6871
Author: Beethoven, Ludwig van
Release Date: Nov 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/bookcover_f3636584-5165-47e7-b5f1-8f6c1020a676.jpg?v=1671285400
