I
wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make an emphatic one, for there
are enough champions of civilization: the minister and the school committee and
every one of you will take care of that.

I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood
the art of Walking, that is, of taking walkswho had a genius, so to
speak, for sauntering, which word is beautifully derived from
idle people who roved about the country, in the Middle Ages, and asked charity,
under pretense of going la Sainte Terre, to the Holy Land, till
the children exclaimed, There goes a Sainte-Terrer, a
Saunterer, a Holy-Lander. They who never go to the Holy Land in their walks, as
they pretend, are indeed mere idlers and vagabonds; but they who do go there
are saunterers in the good sense, such as I mean. Some, however, would derive
the word from sans terre without land or a home, which, therefore, in
the good sense, will mean, having no particular home, but equally at home
everywhere. For this is the secret of successful sauntering. He who sits still
in a house all the time may be the greatest vagrant of all; but the saunterer,
in the good sense, is no more vagrant than the meandering river, which is all
the while sedulously seeking the shortest course to the sea. But I prefer the
first, which, indeed, is the most probable derivation. For every walk is a sort
of crusade, preached by some Peter the Hermit in us, to go forth and reconquer
this Holy Land from the hands of the Infidels.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1022
Author: Thoreau, Henry David
Release Date: Aug 1, 1997
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1022_c0063c43-6e27-4a0a-a8a1-ab42692981c0.jpg?v=1671249946
god-s-country-the-trail-to-happiness-gb-53073
God's Country: The Trail to Happiness

God's Country: The Trail to Happiness

To-night I am in a little cabin in the
heart of a great wilderness. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most? Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry's relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity, interconnectedness, and gratitude. The tree distributes its wealth--its abundance of sweet, juicy berries--to meet the needs of its natural community. And this distribution ensures its own survival. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on "a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise" (Elizabeth Gilbert).

Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings--asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass--offer us gifts and lessons, even if we've forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth, and learn to give our own gifts in return.

Author: Robin Wall Kimmerer
Publisher: Milkweed Editions
Published: 08/11/2015
Pages: 408
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 1.15lbs
Size: 8.40h x 5.50w x 1.10d
ISBN: 9781571313560

About the Author
Robin Wall Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. As we move through the seasons--from a crow spied on New Year's Day, its resourcefulness and sense of community setting a theme for the year, to the lingering bluebirds of December, revisiting the nest box they used in spring--what develops is a portrait of joy and grief: joy in the ongoing pleasures of the natural world, and grief over winters that end too soon and songbirds that grow fewer and fewer.

Along the way, we also glimpse the changing rhythms of a human life. Grown children, unexpectedly home during the pandemic, prepare to depart once more. Birdsong and night-blooming flowers evoke generations past. The city and the country where Renkl raised her family transform a little more with each passing day. And the natural world, now in visible flux, requires every ounce of hope and commitment from the author--and from us. In doing so, he explores not only what neurologically triggers our wary fascination with these limbless creatures, but also how the current generation of snake scientists is using cutting-edge technologies to discover new truths about these evolutionarily ancient creatures--truths that may ultimately affect and enhance human health.

Author: Stephen S. With masterful insight into the spiritual and economic roots of techno-capitalism, Kingsnorth reveals how the Machine, in the name of progress, has choked Western civilization, is destroying the Earth itself, and is reshaping us in its image. By opening himself to the personal and mytho-poetic meanings of dragonfly, and patiently courting an understanding of these creatures that is built upon, but also transcends, a naturalist's observation, Brooke has come to believe in the importance of 're-enchantment.'

Throughout much of human history, we lived in an enchanted world in which myth and magic, ritual, stories, and spirits informed every aspect of our lives, defining the relationships between psyche, Earth and cosmos. For Brooke Williams the message of the dragonfly is to ask questions about synchronicity, awe and the collective unconscious, and how to engage with a world increasingly out of balance. What are the implications of following a path toward greater enchantment? In a time where the stakes have never been higher, nor the political and biological imperatives of climate change and environmental degradation more urgent, can we afford to choose such a path? Why do some improve over time while others fade? What makes us follow or strike off on our own? Over the course of seven years, Moor traveled the globe, exploring trails of all kinds, from the miniscule to the massive. He learned the tricks of master trail-builders, hunted down long-lost Cherokee trails, and traced the origins of our road networks and the Internet. In each chapter, Moor interweaves his adventures with findings from science, history, philosophy, and nature writing. Throughout, Moor reveals how this single topic--the oft-overlooked trail--sheds new light on a wealth of age-old questions: How does order emerge out of chaos? How did animals first crawl forth from the seas and spread across continents? How has humanity's relationship with nature and technology shaped world around us? And, ultimately, how does each of us pick a path through life? Moor has the essayist's gift for making new connections, the adventurer's love for paths untaken, and the philosopher's knack for asking big questions. With a breathtaking arc that spans from the dawn of animal life to the digital era, On Trails is a book that makes us see our world, our history, our species, and our ways of life anew.

Author: Robert Moor
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Published: 07/04/2017
Pages: 352
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.70lbs
Size: 8.30h x 5.60w x 1.00d
ISBN: 9781476739236

About the Author
Hailed by The Wall Street Journal as a "philosopher on foot," Robert Moor is the bestselling author of On Trails and In Trees. Burnside, located in Newfoundland's rugged northeast, seemed like a good place to heal. The coastal village was home to just fifty year-round residents, and accessible only by a hundred-mile ferry crossing. She describes her desire to memorialize something that is in the process of being lost--a landscape, a species, birdsong. How do we mourn the abstracted casualties of what's to come? In a dazzling synthesis of reporting, memoir, and essay, Markham reflects on the design and function of memorials, from the traditional to the speculative--the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC, a converted prison in Ljubljana, a "ghost forest" of dead cedar trees in a Manhattan park--in an attempt to reckon with the grief of climate catastrophe. Her quest drew her to a landscape unlike any other: the Driftless area of Wisconsin, a region untouched by glaciers, marked by steep hills and deeply carved valleys, capped with forests and laced with cold, spring-fed streams. There, she confronted, in ways large and small, the challenges of meeting basic needs while facing the ravages of climate change--an experience at once soul-stirring and practical that she recounts in Shelter and Storm.

Dean's boundless curiosity and gift for storytelling imbue these essays with urgency and a sense of adventure. For fans of Margaret Renkl and Lisa Wells, World Without End considers the ways religion shapes how we understand and interact with the world--and how faith can compel us all to work to save the places we love.

Author: Martha Park
Publisher: Hub City Press
Published: 05/06/2025
Pages: 240
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.01lbs
Size: 8.50h x 5.60w x 1.10d
ISBN: 9798885740487

Review Citation(s):
Library Journal 04/01/2025 pg. 108
Booklist 04/01/2025 pg. 18
Foreword 04/21/2025

About the Author

Martha Park is a writer and illustrator from Memphis, Tennessee.
