Many critics
complained of the book called "Heretics" because it merely criticised
current philosophies without offering any alternative philosophy.
This book is an attempt to answer the challenge. It is unavoidably
affirmative and therefore unavoidably autobiographical. The writer has
been driven back upon somewhat the same difficulty as that which beset
Newman in writing his Apologia; he has been forced to be egotistical
only in order to be sincere. While everything else may be different
the motive in both cases is the same. It is the purpose of the writer
to attempt an explanation, not of whether the Christian Faith can
be believed, but of how he personally has come to believe it.
The book is therefore arranged upon the positive principle of a riddle
and its answer. It deals first with all the writer's own solitary
and sincere speculations and then with all the startling style in
which they were all suddenly satisfied by the Christian Theology.
The writer regards it as amounting to a convincing creed. But if
it is not that it is at least a repeated and surprising coincidence.
                                           Gilbert K. Chesterton.
I. I
wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make an emphatic one, for there
are enough champions of civilization: the minister and the school committee and
every one of you will take care of that.

I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood
the art of Walking, that is, of taking walkswho had a genius, so to
speak, for sauntering, which word is beautifully derived from
idle people who roved about the country, in the Middle Ages, and asked charity,
under pretense of going la Sainte Terre, to the Holy Land, till
the children exclaimed, There goes a Sainte-Terrer, a
Saunterer, a Holy-Lander. They who never go to the Holy Land in their walks, as
they pretend, are indeed mere idlers and vagabonds; but they who do go there
are saunterers in the good sense, such as I mean. Some, however, would derive
the word from sans terre without land or a home, which, therefore, in
the good sense, will mean, having no particular home, but equally at home
everywhere. For this is the secret of successful sauntering. He who sits still
in a house all the time may be the greatest vagrant of all; but the saunterer,
in the good sense, is no more vagrant than the meandering river, which is all
the while sedulously seeking the shortest course to the sea. But I prefer the
first, which, indeed, is the most probable derivation. For every walk is a sort
of crusade, preached by some Peter the Hermit in us, to go forth and reconquer
this Holy Land from the hands of the Infidels.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1022
Author: Thoreau, Henry David
Release Date: Aug 1, 1997
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1022_c0063c43-6e27-4a0a-a8a1-ab42692981c0.jpg?v=1671249946
the-kingdom-of-god-is-within-you-gb-4602
"The Kingdom of God Is Within You"

"The Kingdom of God Is Within You"\r - Christianity Not as a Mystic Religion but as a New Theory of Life

In the year 1884 I wrote a book under the title "What I Believe,"
in which I did in fact make a sincere statement of my beliefs.
In affirming my belief in Christ's teaching, I could not help
explaining why I do not believe, and consider as mistaken, the
Church's doctrine, which is usually called Christianity.
Among the many points in which this doctrine falls short of the
doctrine of Christ I pointed out as the principal one the absence
of any commandment of non-resistance to evil by force. Green and thick and sappy to the touch, they felt like
summer, soft and elastic, as if full of life, mere rushes though they
were. On the fingers they left a green scent; rushes have a separate
scent of green, so, too, have ferns, very different to that of grass or
leaves. Rising from brown sheaths, the tall stems enlarged a little in
the middle, like classical columns, and heavy with their sap and
freshness, leaned against the hawthorn sprays. From the earth they had
drawn its moisture, and made the ditch dry; some of the sweetness of
the air had entered into their fibres, and the rushesthe common
rusheswere full of beautiful summer. The white pollen of early
grasses growing on the edge was dusted from them each time the hawthorn
boughs were shaken by a thrush. These lower sprays came down in among
the grass, and leaves and grass-blades touched. Smooth round stems of
angelica, big as a gun-barrel, hollow and strong, stood on the slope of
the mound, their tiers of well-balanced branches rising like those of a
tree. Such a sturdy growth pushed back the ranks of hedge parsley in
full white flower, which blocked every avenue and winding bird's-path
of the bank. But the "gix," or wild parsnip, reached already high above
both, and would rear its fluted stalk, joint on joint, till it could
face a man. Trees they were to the lesser birds, not even bending if
perched on; but though so stout, the birds did not place their nests on
or against them. Something in the odour of these umbelliferous plants,
perhaps, is not quite liked; if brushed or bruised they give out a
bitter greenish scent. Under their cover, well shaded and hidden, birds
build, but not against or on the stems, though they will affix their
nests to much less certain supports. There is so much to be done,
so many different things to do, so many trades! Shepherds, soldiers,
sailors, ploughmen, cartersone could go on all day naming without
getting to the end of them. For myself, boy and man, I have been
many things, working for a living, and sometimes doing things just
for pleasure; but somehow, whatever I did, it never seemed quite the
right and proper thing to doit never quite satisfied me. I always
wanted to do something elseI wanted to be a carpenter. It seemed
to me that to stand among wood-shavings and sawdust, making things
at a bench with bright beautiful tools out of nice-smelling wood,
was the cleanest, healthiest, prettiest work that any man can do.
Now all this has nothing, or very little, to do with my story: I
only spoke of it because I had to begin somehow, and it struck me
that I would make a start that way. And for another reason, too.
His father was a carpenter. I mean Martin's fatherMartin, the
Little Boy Lost. His father's name was John, and he was a very good
man and a good carpenter, and he loved to do his carpentering better
than anything else; in fact as much as I should have loved it if I
had been taught that trade. He lived in a seaside town, named
Southampton, where there is a great harbour, where he saw great
ships coming and going to and from all parts of the world. Now, no
strong, brave man can live in a place like that, seeing the ships
and often talking to the people who voyaged in them about the
distant lands where they had been, without wishing to go and see
those distant countries for himself. When it is winter in England,
and it rains and rains, and the east wind blows, and it is grey and
cold and the trees are bare, who does not think how nice it would be
to fly away like the summer birds to some distant country where the
sky is always blue and the sun shines bright and warm every day? And
so it came to pass that John, at last, when he was an old man, sold
his shop, and went abroad. They went to a country many thousands of
miles awayfor you must know that Mrs. John went too; and when the
sea voyage ended, they travelled many days and weeks in a wagon
until they came to the place where they wanted to live; and there,
in that lonely country, they built a house, and made a garden, and
planted an orchard. It was a desert, and they had no neighbours, but
they were happy enough because they had as much land as they wanted,
and the weather was always bright and beautiful; John, too, had his
carpenter's tools to work with when he felt inclined; and, best of
all, they had little Martin to love and think about.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 10101
Author: Hudson, W. Their
delectable heights and valleys have engaged his deepest affections
as far as locality is concerned, and however widely he journeys and
whatever charms he discovers in nature elsewhere, still the
loveliness of those pastoral boyhood uplands is unsurpassed.

The ancestral farm is in Roxbury among the western Catskills, where
the mountains are comparatively gentle in type and always graceful
in contour. Cultivated fields and sunny pastures cling to their
mighty slopes far up toward the summits, there are patches of
woodland including frequent groves of sugar maples, and there are
apple orchards and winding roadways, and endless lines of rude stone
fences, and scattered dwellings. In every hollow runs a clear trout
brook, with its pools and swift shallows and silvery falls. Birds
and other wild creatures abound; for the stony earth and the ledges
that crop out along the hillsides, the thickets and forest patches,
the sheltered glens and windy heights offer great variety in
domicile to animal life. The creatures of the outdoor world are much
in evidence, and at no time do their numbers impress one more than
when in winter one sees the hand-writing of their tracks on the
snow.

The work on the farm and the workers are genuinely rustic, but not
nearly so primitive as in the times that Mr. Burroughs most enjoys
recalling. Oxen are of the past, the mowing-machine goes over the
fields where formerly he labored with his scythe, stacks at which
the cattle pull in the winter time are a rarity, and the gray old
barns have given place to modern red ones. It is a dairy country,
and on every farm is found a large herd of cows; but the milk goes
to the creameries. The women, however, still share in the milking,
and there is much of unaffected simplicity in the ways of the
household. On days when work is not pushing, the men are likely to
go hunting or fishing, and they are always alert to observe chances
to take advantage of those little gratuities which nature in the
remoter rural regions is constantly offering, both in the matter of
game and in that of herbs and roots, berries and nuts.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 14108
Author: Burroughs, John
Release Date: Nov 21, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Illustrator: Johnson, Clifton, 1865-1940

Orthodoxy

The only possible excuse for this book is that it is an answer to a
challenge. Even a bad shot is dignified when he accepts a duel. When
some time ago I published a series of hasty but sincere papers, under
the name of "Heretics," several critics for whose intellect I have a
warm respect (I may mention specially Mr. G.S. Street) said that it was
all very well for me to tell everybody to affirm his cosmic theory, but
that I had carefully avoided supporting my precepts with example. "I
will begin to worry about my philosophy," said Mr. Street, "when Mr.
Chesterton has given us his." It was perhaps an incautious suggestion to
make to a person only too ready to write books upon the feeblest
provocation. But after all, though Mr. Street has inspired and created
this book, he need not read it. If he does read it, he will find that in
its pages I have attempted in a vague and personal way, in a set of
mental pictures rather than in a series of deductions, to state the
philosophy in which I have come to believe. I will not call it my
philosophy; for I did not make it. God and humanity made it; and it made
me.
I have often had a fancy for writing a romance about an English
yachtsman who slightly miscalculated his course and discovered England
under the impression that it was a new island in the South Seas. I
always find, however, that I am either too busy or too lazy to write
this fine work, so I may as well give it away for the purposes of
philosophical illustration. There will probably be a general impression
that the man who landed (armed to the teeth and talking by signs) to
plant the British flag on that barbaric temple which turned out to be
the Pavilion at Brighton, felt rather a fool. I am not here concerned to
deny that he looked a fool. But if you imagine that he felt a fool, or
at any rate that the sense of folly was his sole or his dominant
emotion, then you have not studied with sufficient delicacy the rich
romantic nature of the hero of this tale. His mistake was really a most
enviable mistake; and he knew it, if he was the man I take him for. What
could be more delightful than to have in the same few minutes all the
fascinating terrors of going abroad combined with all the humane
security of coming home again? What could be better than to have all
the fun of discovering South Africa without the disgusting necessity of
landing there? What could be more glorious than to brace one's self up
to discover New South Wales and then realize, with a gush of happy
tears, that it was really old South Wales. This at least seems to me the
main problem for philosophers, and is in a manner the main problem of
this book. How can we contrive to be at once astonished at the world and
yet at home in it? How can this queer cosmic town, with its many-legged
citizens, with its monstrous and ancient lamps, how can this world give
us at once the fascination of a strange town and the comfort and honour
of being our own town? To show that a faith or a philosophy is true from
every standpoint would be too big an undertaking even for a much bigger
book than this; it is necessary to follow one path of argument; and this
is the path that I here propose to follow. I wish to set forth my faith
as particularly answering this double spiritual need, the need for that
mixture of the familiar and the unfamiliar which Christendom has rightly
named romance. For the very word "romance" has in it the mystery and
ancient meaning of Rome. Any one setting out to dispute anything ought
always to begin by saying what he does not dispute. Beyond stating what
he proposes to prove he should always state what he does not propose to
prove. The thing I do not propose to prove, the thing I propose to take
as common ground between myself and any average reader, is this
desirability of an active and imaginative life, picturesque and full of
a poetical curiosity, a life such as western man at any rate always
seems to have desired. If a man says that extinction is better than
existence or blank existence better than variety and adventure, then he
is not one of the ordinary people to whom I am talking. If a man prefers
nothing I can give him nothing. But nearly all people I have ever met in
this western society in which I live would agree to the general
proposition that we need this life of practical romance; the combination
of something that is strange with something that is secure. We need so
to view the world as to combine an idea of wonder and an idea of
welcome. We need to be happy in this wonderland without once being
merely comfortable. It is this achievement of my creed that I shall
chiefly pursue in these pages.
But I have a peculiar reason for mentioning the man in a yacht, who
discovered England. For I am that man in a yacht. I discovered England.
I do not see how this book can avoid being egotistical; and I do not
quite see (to tell the truth) how it can avoid being dull. Dullness
will, however, free me from the charge which I most lament; the charge
of being flippant. Mere light sophistry is the thing that I happen to
despise most of all things, and it is perhaps a wholesome fact that this
is the thing of which I am generally accused. I know nothing so
contemptible as a mere paradox; a mere ingenious defence of the
indefensible. If it were true (as has been said) that Mr. Bernard Shaw
lived upon paradox, then he ought to be a mere common millionaire; for a
man of his mental activity could invent a sophistry every six minutes.
It is as easy as lying; because it is lying. The truth is, of course,
that Mr. Shaw is cruelly hampered by the fact that he cannot tell any
lie unless he thinks it is the truth. I find myself under the same
intolerable bondage. I never in my life said anything merely because I
thought it funny; though, of course, I have had ordinary human
vain-glory, and may have thought it funny because I had said it. It is
one thing to describe an interview with a gorgon or a griffin, a
creature who does not exist. It is another thing to discover that the
rhinoceros does exist and then take pleasure in the fact that he looks
as if he didn't. One searches for truth, but it may be that one pursues
instinctively the more extraordinary truths. And I offer this book with
the heartiest sentiments to all the jolly people who hate what I write,
and regard it (very justly, for all I know), as a piece of poor clowning
or a single tiresome joke.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 16769
Author: Chesterton, G. It may be said, by way of special preface, that the nature mystic here
portrayed is essentially a "modern." He is assumed to have accepted the
fundamentals of the hypothesis of evolution. Accordingly, his sympathy with the
past is profound: so also is his sense of the reality and continuity of human
development, physical, psychic, and mystical. Moreover, he tries to be abreast
of the latest critical and scientific conclusions. Imperfections manifold will
be discovered in the pages that follow; but the author asks that a percentage of
them may be attributed to the difficulties of writing in Tasmania and publishing
at the antipodes.
A wave of Mysticism is passing over the civilised nations. It is
welcomed by many: by more it is mistrusted. Even the minds to which it would
naturally appeal are often restrained from sympathy by fears of vague
speculative driftings and of transcendental emotionalism. Nor can it be doubted
that such an attitude of aloofness is at once reasonable and inevitable. For a
systematic exaltation of formless ecstasies, at the expense of sense and
intellect, has a tendency to become an infirmity if it does not always betoken
loss of mental balance. The
Tarner lectureship is an occasional office founded by the liberality of
Mr Edward Tarner. The duty of each of the successive holders of the post
will be to deliver a course on the Philosophy of the Sciences and the
Relations or Want of Relations between the different Departments of
Knowledge. The present book embodies the endeavour of the first
lecturer of the series to fulfil his task.
The chapters retain their original lecture form and remain as delivered
with the exception of minor changes designed to remove obscurities of
expression. The lecture form has the advantage of suggesting an audience
with a definite mental background which it is the purpose of the lecture
to modify in a specific way. In the presentation of a novel outlook with
wide ramifications a single line of communications from premises to
conclusions is not sufficient for intelligibility. Your audience will
construe whatever you say into conformity with their pre-existing
outlook. For this reason the first two chapters and the last two
chapters are essential for intelligibility though they hardly add to the
formal completeness of the exposition. Their function is to prevent the
reader from bolting up side tracks in pursuit of misunderstandings. The
same reason dictates my avoidance of the existing technical terminology
of philosophy. The modern natural philosophy is shot through and
through with the fallacy of bifurcation which is discussed in the second
chapter of this work. Accordingly all its technical terms in some subtle
way presuppose a misunderstanding of my thesis. It is perhaps as well to
state explicitly that if the reader indulges in the facile vice of
bifurcation not a word of what I have here written will be intelligible.
The last two chapters do not properly belong to the special course.
ChapterVIII is a lecture delivered in the spring of 1920 before the
Chemical Society of the students of the Imperial College of Science and
Technology. It has been appended here as conveniently summing up and
applying the doctrine of the book for an audience with one definite type
of outlook.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 18835
Author: Whitehead, Alfred North
Release Date: Jul 16, 2006
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Book of Nature Myths

In preparing the Book of Nature Myths the desire has been to make a
second reader which would be adapted to the child's interest, ability,
and progress.
The subject-matter is of permanent value, culled from the folk-lore of
the primitive races; the vocabulary, based upon that of the Hiawatha
Primer, is increased gradually, and the new words and phrases will add
to the child's power of expression. There is so
much to be done, so many different things to do,
so many trades! Shepherds, soldiers, sailors, ploughmen,
cartersone could go on all day naming without getting
to the end of them. For myself, boy and man, I have
been many things, working for a living, and sometimes doing
things just for pleasure; but somehow, whatever I did,
it never seemed quite the right and proper thing to doit never
quite satisfied me. I always wanted to do something elseI
wanted to be a carpenter. It seemed to me that to stand among
wood-shavings and sawdust, making things at a bench with
bright beautiful tools out of nice-smelling wood, was the cleanest,
healthiest, prettiest work that any man can do. Now all
this has nothing, or very little, to do with my story: I only spoke[14]
of it because I had to begin somehow, and it struck me that
would make a start that way. And for another reason, too.
His father was a carpenter. I mean Martin's fatherMartin,
the Little Boy Lost. His father's name was John, and
he was a very good man and a good carpenter, and he loved
to do his carpentering better than anything else; in fact
as much as I should have loved it if I had been taught
that trade. He lived in a seaside town, named Southampton,
where there is a great harbour, where he saw
great ships coming and going to and from all parts of the
world. Now, no strong, brave man can live in a place like that,
seeing the ships and often talking to the people who voyaged
in them about the distant lands where they had been, without
wishing to go and see those distant countries for himself.
When it is winter in England, and it rains and rains, and the
east wind blows, and it is grey and cold and the trees are bare,
who does not think how nice it would be to fly away like the
summer birds to some distant country where the sky is always
blue and the sun shines bright and warm every day? And so
it came to pass that John, at last, when he was an old man, sold
his shop, and went abroad. They went to a country many
thousands of miles awayfor you must know that Mrs. John
went too; and when the sea voyage ended, they travelled many
days and weeks in a wagon until they came to the place where
they wanted to live; and there, in that lonely country, they
built a house, and made a garden, and planted an orchard. It[15]
was a desert, and they had no neighbours, but they were happy
enough because they had as much land as they wanted, and the
weather was always bright and beautiful; John, too, had his
carpenter's tools to work with when he felt inclined; and, best
of all, they had little Martin to love and think about.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 38421
Author: Hudson, W. More than one
edition has already been issued in Russia, but in each
case it has been so mutilated by the "Censor," that I
request all who are interested in my views on art only
to judge of them by the work in its present shape. The
causes which led to the publication of the bookwith
my name attached to itin a mutilated form were the
following: In accordance with a decision I arrived at
long ago,not to submit my writings to the "Censorship"
(which I consider to be an immoral and irrational
institution), but to print them only in the shape in which
they were written,I intended not to attempt to print
this work in Russia. However, my good acquaintance,
Professor Grote, editor of a Moscow psychological magazine,
having heard of the contents of my work, asked me
to print it in his magazine, and promised me that he
would get the book through the "Censor's" office unmutilated
if I would but agree to a few very unimportant
alterations, merely toning down certain expressions. I
was weak enough to agree to this, and it has resulted in
a book appearing under my name, from which not only
have some essential thoughts been excluded, but into
which the thoughts of other meneven thoughts utterly
opposed to my own convictionshave been introduced.
The thing occurred in this way. First, Grote softened
my expressions, and in some cases weakened them. For
instance, he replaced the words: always by sometimes,
all by some, Church religion by Roman Catholic religion,
"Mother of God" by Madonna, patriotism by pseudo-patriotism,
palaces by palatii,[37] etc., and I did not consider[342]
it necessary to protest. But when the book was already
in type, the Censor required that whole sentences should
be altered, and that instead of what I said about the evil
of landed property, a remark should be substituted on
the evils of a landless proletariate.[38] I agreed to this
also, and to some further alterations. It seemed not
worth while to upset the whole affair for the sake of
one sentence, and when one alteration had been agreed
to it seemed not worth while to protest against a second
and a third. So, little by little, expressions crept into
the book which altered the sense and attributed things
to me that I could not have wished to say. So that by
the time the book was printed it had been deprived of
some part of its integrity and sincerity. But there was
consolation in the thought that the book, even in this
form, if it contains something that is good, would be of
use to Russian readers whom it would otherwise not have
reached. Things, however, turned out otherwise. Nous
comptions sans notre hte. After the legal term of four
days had already elapsed, the book was seized, and, on
instructions received from Petersburg, it was handed
over to the "Spiritual Censor." Then Grote declined
all further participation in the affair, and the "Spiritual
Censor" proceeded to do what he would with the book.
The "Spiritual Censorship" is one of the most ignorant,
venal, stupid, and despotic institutions in Russia. Books
which disagree in any way with the recognized state religion
of Russia, if once it gets hold of them, are almost
always totally suppressed and burnt; which is what
happened to all my religious works when attempts were
made to print them in Russia. Probably a similar fate
would have overtaken this work also, had not the editors[343]
of the magazine employed all means to save it. The result
of their efforts was that the "Spiritual Censor," a
priest who probably understands art and is interested in
art as much as I understand or am interested in church
services, but who gets a good salary for destroying whatever
is likely to displease his superiors, struck out all that
seemed to him to endanger his position, and substituted
his thoughts for mine wherever he considered it necessary
to do so. For instance, where I speak of Christ
going to the Cross for the sake of the truth He professed,
the "Censor" substituted a statement that Christ died
for mankind, i.e. he attributed to me an assertion of the
dogma of the Redemption, which I consider to be one of
the most untrue and harmful of Church dogmas. After
correcting the book in this way, the "Spiritual Censor"
allowed it to be printed.
To protest in Russia is impossibleno newspaper
would publish such a protest; and to withdraw my book
from the magazine, and place the editor in an awkward
position with the public, was also not possible.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 43409
Author: Tolstoy, Leo
Release Date: Aug 7, 2013
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Translator: Delano, Aline, 1845-

Natural Wonders

No small part of our fundamental knowledge
concerning the world of nature has been put into
shape for comprehension by children, time out of
    mind. Many of them
were printed by him, in whole or in part, among his early contributions
to Emersons Dial, or in his own two volumes, The Week and Walden,
which were all that were issued in his lifetime. Others were given to
Mr. Sanborn for publication, by Sophia Thoreau, the year after her
brothers death (several appeared in the Boston Commonwealth in 1863);
or have been furnished from time to time by Mr. Blake, his literary
executor.
Most of Thoreaus poems were composed early in his life, before his
twenty-sixth year, Just now he wrote in the autumn of 1841, I am in
the mid-sea of verses, and they actually rustle round me, as the leaves
would round the head of Autumnus himself, should he thrust it{xii} up
through some vales which I know; but, alas! many of them are but crisped
and yellow leaves like his, I fear, and will deserve no better fate than
to make mould for new harvests. After 1843 he seems to have written but
few poems, and had destroyed perhaps as many as he had retained, because
they did not meet the exacting requirements of his friend Emerson, upon
whose opinion at that time he placed great reliance. This loss was
regretted by Thoreau in after years, when the poetical habit had left
him, for he fancied that some of the verses were better than his friend
had supposed. But Emerson, who seldom changed his mind, adhered to his
verdict, and while praising some of the poems highly, perhaps
extravagantly, would admit but a small number of them to the slight
selection which he appended to the posthumous edition of Thoreaus
Letters, edited by him in 1865; and even these were printed, in some
instances, in an abbreviated and imperfect form.[1] A few other
poems,{xiii} with some translations from the Greek, have lately been included
by Thoreaus Boston publishers in their volume of Miscellanies (vol.
x. of the Riverside Edition, 1894). But no collection so full as the
present one has ever been offered to the public.
It has not been attempted to make this a complete collection of
Thoreaus poems, because, as has been well said, many of them seem to
be merely pendants to his prose discourse, dropped in as forcible
epigrams where they are brief, and in other instances made ancillary to
the idea just expressed, or to perpetuate a distinct conception that has
some vital connection with the point from which it was poured forth. It
is, therefore, almost an injustice to treat them separately at all.[2]
After the discontinuance of The Dial, Thoreau ceased to publish his
verses as separate poems, but interpolated them, in the manner
described, in his prose essays, where they form a sort of accompaniment
to the thought, and from which it is in many cases impossible to detach
them. That he{xiv} himself set some value on them in this connection may be
gathered from a sentence in the last of his published letters, in which
he writes to a correspondent: I am pleased when you say that in The
Week you like especially those little snatches of poetry interspersed
through the book, for these I suppose are the least attractive to most
readers.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 59988
Author: Thoreau, Henry David
Release Date: Jul 27, 2019
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Salt, Henry S., 1851-1939 , Sanborn, F. Of these
attacks, some have been more violent, but none more serious than
that of which it is, in these days, the object.

For eighteen hundred years Christians were in turn persecutors
and persecuted; Christians persecuted as Christians, Christians
persecutors of every one who was not ChristianChristians
mutually persecuting each other. This persecution varied, it is
true, in degree of cruelty with the age and the country, as it
also did in the degree of inflexibility evinced and success
attained in the prosecution of its object; but whatever the
diversity of state, church, or punishment, whatever the degree of
severity or laxity in the application of the principle, this
principle was ever the same.
{viii}
After having had to endure proscription and martyrdom under the
imperial government of Paganism, the Christian religion lived, in
its turn, under the guard of the civil law, defended by the arms
of secular power.

In these days it exists in the very presence of Liberty. It has
to deal with free thought, with free discussion. It is called
upon to defend, to guard itself, to prove incessantly and against
every comer its moral and historical veracity, to vindicate its
claims upon man's intelligence and man's soul. Roman Catholics,
Protestants, or Jews, Christians or philosophers, all, at least
in our country, are sheltered from every persecution; for no one
without incurring the risk of ridicule could characterise as
persecution the sacrifices or the inconveniences to which the
expression of his opinion may occasionally subject him. To every
man such expression of opinion is permitted, and can never lead
to the forfeiture, on the part of any single individual, of any
of his political rights or privileges.
{ix}
Religious Libertythat is to say, the liberty of believing; of
believing differently or of disbelievingmay be but imperfectly
accepted and guaranteed as a principle in certain states; but it
still is evident that it is becoming so every day more and more,
and that it will eventually become the Common Law of the
civilised world.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 60488
Author: Guizot, François
Release Date: Oct 13, 2019
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Kernel and the Husk: Letters on Spiritual Christianity

The time is not perhaps far distant when few will
believe in miracles who do not also believe in an
infallible Church; and then, such books as the present
will appeal to a larger circle. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most? Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry's relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity, interconnectedness, and gratitude. The tree distributes its wealth--its abundance of sweet, juicy berries--to meet the needs of its natural community. And this distribution ensures its own survival. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on "a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise" (Elizabeth Gilbert).

Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings--asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass--offer us gifts and lessons, even if we've forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth, and learn to give our own gifts in return.

Author: Robin Wall Kimmerer
Publisher: Milkweed Editions
Published: 08/11/2015
Pages: 408
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 1.15lbs
Size: 8.40h x 5.50w x 1.10d
ISBN: 9781571313560

About the Author
Robin Wall Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Imagine that it lived under your roof and bounded around your bedroom at night, drumming on the duvet cover when it wanted your attention. Imagine that, more than two years later, it still ran in from the fields when you called it and slept in your house for hours on end. For political advisor and speechwriter Chloe Dalton, who spent lockdown deep in the English countryside, far away from her usual busy London life, this became her unexpected reality.

In February 2021, Dalton stumbles upon a newborn hare--a leveret--that had been chased by a dog. Fearing for its life, she brings it home, only to discover how difficult it is to rear a wild hare, most of whom perish in captivity from either shock or starvation. Through trial and error, she learns to feed and care for the leveret with every intention of returning it to the wilderness. Instead, it becomes her constant companion, wandering the fields and woods at night and returning to Dalton's house by day. Though Dalton feared that the hare would be preyed upon by foxes, weasels, feral cats, raptors, or even people, she never tried to restrict it to the house. Each time the hare leaves, Chloe knows she may never see it again. Yet she also understands that to confine it would be its own kind of death.

Raising Hare chronicles their journey together while also taking a deep dive into the lives and nature of hares, and the way they have been viewed historically in art, literature, and folklore. To survive and thrive while rooted in a single spot, plants have adapted ingenious methods of survival. In recent years, scientists have learned about their ability to communicate, recognize their kin and behave socially, hear sounds, morph their bodies to blend into their surroundings, store useful memories that inform their life cycle, and trick animals into behaving to their benefit, to name just a few remarkable talents.

The Light Eaters is a deep immersion into the drama of green life and the complexity of this wild and awe-inspiring world that challenges our very understanding of agency, consciousness, and intelligence. In looking closely, we see that plants, rather than imitate human intelligence, have perhaps formed a parallel system. What is intelligent life if not a vine that grows leaves to blend into the shrub on which it climbs, a flower that shapes its bloom to fit exactly the beak of its pollinator, a pea seedling that can hear water flowing and make its way toward it? Zoë Schlanger takes us across the globe, digging into her own memories and into the soil with the scientists who have spent their waking days studying these amazing entities up close.

What can we learn about life on Earth from the living things that thrive, adapt, consume, and accommodate simultaneously? More important, what do we owe these life forms once we come to understand their rich and varied abilities? Examining the latest epiphanies in botanical research, Schlanger spotlights the intellectual struggles among the researchers conceiving a wholly new view of their subject, offering a glimpse of a field in turmoil as plant scientists debate the tenets of ongoing discoveries and how they influence our understanding of what a plant is.

We need plants to survive. As we move through the seasons--from a crow spied on New Year's Day, its resourcefulness and sense of community setting a theme for the year, to the lingering bluebirds of December, revisiting the nest box they used in spring--what develops is a portrait of joy and grief: joy in the ongoing pleasures of the natural world, and grief over winters that end too soon and songbirds that grow fewer and fewer.

Along the way, we also glimpse the changing rhythms of a human life. Grown children, unexpectedly home during the pandemic, prepare to depart once more. Birdsong and night-blooming flowers evoke generations past. The city and the country where Renkl raised her family transform a little more with each passing day.
