Many critics
complained of the book called "Heretics" because it merely criticised
current philosophies without offering any alternative philosophy.
This book is an attempt to answer the challenge. It is unavoidably
affirmative and therefore unavoidably autobiographical. The writer has
been driven back upon somewhat the same difficulty as that which beset
Newman in writing his Apologia; he has been forced to be egotistical
only in order to be sincere. While everything else may be different
the motive in both cases is the same. It is the purpose of the writer
to attempt an explanation, not of whether the Christian Faith can
be believed, but of how he personally has come to believe it.
The book is therefore arranged upon the positive principle of a riddle
and its answer. It deals first with all the writer's own solitary
and sincere speculations and then with all the startling style in
which they were all suddenly satisfied by the Christian Theology.
The writer regards it as amounting to a convincing creed. But if
it is not that it is at least a repeated and surprising coincidence.
                                           Gilbert K. Chesterton.
I. But there is a blessing on those who sell it."
This verse speaks truly concerning all that can serve the common
good or the well-being of Christendom. This is the reason the
master in the gospel reprimands the unfaithful servant like a lazy
scoundrel for having hidden and buried his money in the ground.
So that this curse of the Lord and the entire Church might be
avoided, I must publish this letter which came into my possession
through a good friend. I could not withhold it, as there has been
much discussion about the translating of the Old and New
Testaments. It has been charged by the despisers of truth that
the text has been modified and even falsified in many places,
which has shocked and startled many simple Christians, even among
the educated who do not know any Hebrew or Greek. It is devoutly
hoped that with this publication the slander of the godless will
be stopped and the scruples of the devout removed, at least in
part. It may even give rise to more writing on such matters and
questions such as these. So I ask all friends of the Truth to
seriously take this work to heart and faithfully pray to God for a
proper understanding of the divine Scriptures towards the
improvement and increase of our common Christendom. Although considered to be pseudepigraphic by some, it carries
significant meaning and insight into events of that time. It is
doubtful that these writings could have survived all the many centuries
if there were no substance to them.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 398
Author: Platt, Rutherford Hayes
Release Date: Jan 1, 1996
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/398_3dc88ddc-6b69-4fb9-ba25-0c1893e6e9a7.jpg?v=1671248014
dr-martin-luther-s-deutsche-geistliche-lieder-gb-417
Dr. Martin Luther's Deutsche Geistliche Lieder

Dr. Martin Luther's Deutsche Geistliche Lieder\r - The Hymns of Martin Luther Set to Their Original Melodies, With an English Version

Please take a look at the important information in this header.
We encourage you to keep this file on your own disk, keeping an
electronic path open for the next readers. The Occasion of the Work.Luther did not impose himself as reformer
upon the Church. In the course of a conscientious performance of the
duties of his office, to which he had been regularly and divinely
called, and without any urging on his part, he attained to this
position by inward necessity. In 1515 he received his appointment as
the standing substitute for the sickly city pastor, Simon Heinse, from
the city council of Wittenberg. Before this time he was obliged to
preach only occasionally in the convent, apart from his activity as
teacher in the University and convent. Through this appointment he was
in duty bound, by divine and human right, to lead and direct the
congregation at Wittenberg on the true way to life, and it would have
been a denial of the knowledge of salvation which God had led him to
acquire, by way of ardent inner struggles, if he had led the
congregation on any other way than the one God had revealed to him in
His Word. He could not deny before the congregation which had been
intrusted to his care, what up to this time he had taught with ever
increasing clearness in his lectures at the Universityfor in the
lectures on the Psalms, which he began to deliver in 1513, he declares
his conviction that faith alone justifies, as can be seen from the
complete manuscript, published since 1885, and with still greater
clearness from his Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans (1515-1516),
which is accessible since 1908; nor what he had urged as spiritual
adviser of his convent brethren when in deep distresscompare the
charming letter to Georg Spenlein, dated April 8, 1516.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 418
Author: Luther, Martin
Release Date: Feb 1, 1996
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Translator: Reu, Johann Michael, 1869-1943

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/418_768add68-40d4-4843-840d-ff3c5d35f0d6.jpg?v=1671248057
the-vital-message-gb-439
The Vital Message

The Vital Message

In "The New Revelation" the first dawn of the coming change has been
described. In "The Vital Message" the sun has risen higher, and one sees
more clearly and broadly what our new relations with the Unseen may be. As
I look into the future of the human race I am reminded of how once, from
amid the bleak chaos of rock and snow at the head of an Alpine pass, I
looked down upon the far stretching view of Lombardy, shimmering in the
sunshine and extending in one splendid panorama of blue lakes and green
rolling hills until it melted into the golden haze which draped the far
horizon. Such a promised land is at our very feet which, when we attain
it, will make our present civilisation seem barren and uncouth. Already
our vanguard is well over the pass. Nothing can now prevent us from
reaching that wonderful land which stretches so clearly before those eyes
which are opened to see it.

That stimulating writer, V. C. Desertis, has remarked that the Second
Coming, which has always been timed to follow Armageddon, may be fulfilled
not by a descent of the spiritual to us, but by the ascent of our material
plane to the spiritual, and the blending of the two phases of existence.
It is, at least, a fascinating speculation. But without so complete an
overthrow of the partition walls as this would imply we know enough
already to assure ourselves of such a close approximation as will surely
deeply modify all our views of science, of religion and of life. What form
these changes may take and what the evidence is upon which they will be
founded are briefly set forth in this volume.

      July, 1919.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 439
Author: Doyle, Arthur Conan
Release Date: Feb 1, 1996
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/439_dda4a700-b7f1-46b3-9bfc-ca4876f852a6.jpg?v=1671248105
the-psychology-of-revolution-gb-448
The Psychology of Revolution

The Psychology of Revolution

Please take a look at the important information in this header.
We encourage you to keep this file on your own disk, keeping an
electronic path open for the next readers. With pick and shovel they are letting the rays of the April sun
into the great ice barrier which binds together the modern quays and the
old granite fortress where lie the bones of the Romanoff Czars.

This barrier is already weakened; it is widely decayed, in many places
thin, and everywhere treacherous; but it is, as a whole, so broad, so
crystallized about old boulders, so imbedded in shallows, so wedged into
crannies on either shore, that it is a great danger. The waters from
thousands of swollen streamlets above are pressing behind it; wreckage and
refuse are piling up against it; every one knows that it must yield. But
there is danger that it may resist the pressure too long and break
suddenly, wrenching even the granite quays from their foundations,
bringing desolation to a vast population, and leaving, after the
subsidence of the flood, a widespread residue of slime, a fertile
breeding-bed for the germs of disease.

But the patient mujiks are doing the right thing. The barrier, exposed
more and more to the warmth of spring by the scores of channels they are
making, will break away gradually, and the river will flow on beneficent
      and beautiful.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 505
Author: White, Andrew Dickson
Release Date: Apr 1, 1996
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/505_63507d26-844a-4f83-a944-7a8ad943ccc2.jpg?v=1671248241
the-planet-mars-and-its-inhabitants-a-psychic-revelation-gb-563
The Planet Mars and Its Inhabitants, a Psychic Revelation

The Planet Mars and Its Inhabitants, a Psychic Revelation

To the millions of God's children on
this earth enthralled in darkness, for whom
the solicitude of the Father is now in
  evidence, this book is dedicated.

One hemisphere of Mars showing the North Polar Cap and the main Canal
System covering the planet. On the morning of
June 17th, 1775, a force of British soldiers attacked a small body of raw,
ill-equipped American volunteers, who had fortified a hill near Boston,
and quickly drove them from their position. By whom then was the Bunker
Hill Monument erected? By the victors in that first engagement of the
Revolution? No, but by proud descendants of the vanquished, whose broader
view showed them the incalculable benefits arising from that seeming
defeat, which precipitated the great struggle, forcing every man in the
Colonies to take a position squarely for or against the American Cause,
convinced the timid that only proper equipment would be needed to enable
the American army to hold its own against the foe, and taught the British
that they were dealing, not with hot-headed rebels who would run at first
sight of the dreaded red coats, but with patriots who would stand their
ground so long as a charge of powder remained, or gunstocks could be
      handled as clubs.

Very much the same line of argument may be applied to the first attempt of
the Moravian Church to establish a settlement on the American Continent.
The story is usually passed over by historians in a few short paragraphs,
and yet without the colony in Georgia, the whole history of the Renewed
Church of the Unitas Fratrum would have been very different. Without that
movement the Moravian Church might never have been established in England,
without it the great Methodist denomination might never have come into
being, without it the American Moravian provinces, North or South, might
not have been planned. Of course Providence might have provided other
means for the accomplishment of these ends, but certain it is that in the
actual development of all these things the unsuccessful attempt in
Georgia, 1735 to 1740, played a most important part.

In preparing this history a number of private libraries, the collections
of the Georgia Historical Society, the Congressional Library, the British
Museum, were searched for data, but so little was found that the story, in
so far as it relates to the Moravian settlement, has been drawn entirely
from the original manuscripts in the Archives of the Unitas Fratrum at
Herrnhut, Germany, with some additions from the Archives at Bethlehem,
Pa., and Salem, N. But the unexpected growth of the
psychological matter as I came to write it out has resulted in the
second subject being postponed entirely, and the description of man's
religious constitution now fills the twenty lectures. In Lecture
        XX I have suggested
rather than stated my own philosophic conclusions, and the reader who
desires immediately to know them should turn to pages 511-519, and to the Postscript of the book. I hope to be able at
some later day to express them in more explicit form.
In my belief that
a large acquaintance with particulars often makes us wiser than the
possession of abstract formulas, however deep, I have loaded the
lectures with concrete examples, and I have chosen these among the
extremer expressions of the religious temperament. To some readers I
may consequently seem, before they get beyond the middle of the book,
to offer a caricature of [pg
        vi] the
subject. Such convulsions of piety, they will say, are not sane. If,
however, they will have the patience to read to the end, I believe
that this unfavorable impression will disappear; for I there combine
the religious impulses with other principles of common sense which
serve as correctives of exaggeration, and allow the individual reader
to draw as moderate conclusions as he will.
My thanks for help
in writing these lectures are due to Edwin D. Starbuck, of Stanford
University, who made over to me his large collection of manuscript
material; to Henry W. Rankin, of East Northfield, a friend unseen but
proved, to whom I owe precious information; to Theodore Flournoy, of
Geneva, to Canning Schiller, of Oxford, and to my colleague Benjamin
Rand, for documents; to my colleague Dickinson S. The numberless figures
and sacred emblems which appear carved in imperishable stone in the
earliest cave temples; the huge towers, monoliths, and rocking stones
found in nearly every country of the globe, and which are known to be
closely connected with primitive belief and worship, and the records found
on tablets which are being unearthed in various parts of the world, are,
with the unravelling of extinct tongues, proving an almost inexhaustible
source for obtaining information bearing upon the early history of the
human race, and, together, furnish indisputable evidence of the origin,
development, and unity of religious faiths.

By comparing the languages used by the earlier races to express their
religious conceptions; by observing the similarity in the mythoses and
sacred appellations among all tribes and nations, and through the discovery
of the fact that the legends extant in the various countries of the globe
are identical, or have the same foundation, it is probable that a clue has
already been obtained whereby an outline of the religious history of the
human family from a period even as remote as the "first dispersion," or
from a time when one race comprehended the entire population of the globe,
maybe traced. Humboldt in his Researches observes: "In every part of the
globe, on the ridge of the Cordilleras as well as in the Isle of
Samothrace, in the Aegean Sea, fragments of primitive languages are
      preserved in religious rites."

Regarding the identity of the fundamental ideas contained in the various
systems of religion, both past and present, Hargrave Jennings, in
referring to a parallel drawn by Sir William Jones, between the deities of
      Meru and Olympus, observes:

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 639
Author: Gamble, Eliza Burt
Release Date: Aug 1, 1996
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/639_7dd7502b-2ff2-4c07-82b6-29625303898b.jpg?v=1671248525
thoughts-on-man-his-nature-productions-and-discoveries-gb-743
Thoughts on Man, His Nature, Productions and Discoveries

Thoughts on Man, His Nature, Productions and Discoveries\r - Interspersed with Some Particulars Respecting the Author

In the ensuing volume I have attempted to give a defined and permanent
form to a variety of thoughts, which have occurred to my mind in the
course of thirty-four years, it being so long since I published a volume,
entitled, the Enquirer, thoughts, which, if they have presented
themselves to other men, have, at least so far as I am aware, never been
given to the public through the medium of the press. August 3, 1530.

As His Worshipful Imperial Majesty received several days since a
Confession of Faith presented by the Elector the duke of Saxony and
several princes and two cities, to which their names were affixed, with
his characteristic zeal for the glory of God, the salvation of souls,
Christian harmony and the public peace, he not only himself read the
Confession, but also, in order that in a matter of such moment he might
proceed the more thoroughly and seasonably, he referred the aforesaid
Confession to several learned, mature, approved and honorable men of
different nations for their inspection and examination, and earnestly
directed and enjoined them to praise and approve what in the Confession
was said aright and in accord with Catholic doctrine, but, on the other
hand, to note that wherein it differed from the Catholic Church, and,
together with their reply, to present and explain their judgment on each
      topic. Their first
meetings were held in the room of a cottage in which one of the
members lived; and, as others shortly joined them, the place soon
became inconveniently filled. When the
weather was fine, the youths might be seen, until a late hour,
hanging round the door of the hut like a cluster of bees; but
sometimes a sudden shower of rain would dash the sums from their
slates, and disperse them for the evening unsatisfied.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 935
Author: Smiles, Samuel
Release Date: Jun 1, 1997
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/935_5b56d112-d621-4739-9d7a-d058546b42da.jpg?v=1671249104
ethics-part-3-gb-948
Ethics — Part 3

Ethics — Part 3

Most writers on the emotions and on human conduct seem
to be treating rather of matters outside nature than of natural
phenomena following nature's general laws. They appear to
conceive man to be situated in nature as a kingdom within a
kingdom: for they believe that he disturbs rather than follows
nature's order, that he has absolute control over his actions,
and that he is determined solely by himself. But, before I begin, it would be well
to make a few prefatory observations on perfection and imperfection,
good and evil.
When a man has purposed to make a given thing, and has brought it
to perfection, his work will be pronounced perfect, not only by
himself, but by everyone who rightly knows, or thinks that he knows,
the intention and aim of its author. For instance, suppose anyone sees a
work (which I assume to be not yet completed), and knows that the aim
of the author of that work is to build a house, he will call the work
imperfect; he will, on the other hand, call it perfect, as soon as he
sees that it is carried through to the end, which its author had purposed
for it. But if a man sees a work, the like whereof he has never seen
before, and if he knows not the intention of the artificer, he plainly
cannot know, whether that work be perfect or imperfect. Such seems to
be the primary meaning of these terms.
But, after men began to form general ideas, to think out types of
houses, buildings, towers, &c., and to prefer certain types to others,
it came about, that each man called perfect that which he saw agree
with the general idea he had formed of the thing in question, and called
imperfect that which he saw agree less with his own preconceived type,
even though it had evidently been completed in accordance with the idea
of its artificer. This seems to be the only reason for calling natural
phenomena, which, indeed, are not made with human hands, perfect or
imperfect: for men are wont to form general ideas of things natural, no
less than of things artificial, and such ideas they hold as types,
believing that Nature (who they think does nothing without an object)
has them in view, and has set them as types before herself. Therefore,
when they behold something in Nature, which does not wholly conform to
the preconceived type which they have formed of the thing in question,
they say that Nature has fallen short or has blundered, and has left
her work incomplete. Thus we see that men are wont to style natural
phenomena perfect or imperfect rather from their own prejudices, than
from true knowledge of what they pronounce upon.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 971
Author: Spinoza, Benedictus de
Release Date: Jul 1, 1997
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Translator: Elwes, R. I shall therefore treat therein of the
power of the reason, showing how far the reason can control the emotions,
and what is the nature of Mental Freedom or Blessedness; we shall then be
able to see, how much more powerful the wise man is than the ignorant.
It is no part of my design to point out the method and means whereby the
understanding may be perfected, nor to show the skill whereby the body may
be so tended, as to be capable of the due performance of its functions. The
latter question lies in the province of Medicine, the former in the province
of Logic. Here, therefore, I repeat, I shall treat only of the power of the
mind, or of reason; and I shall mainly show the extent and nature of its
dominion over the emotions, for their control and moderation. That we do
not possess absolute dominion over them, I have already shown. Yet the
Stoics have thought, that the emotions depended absolutely on our will, and
that we could absolutely govern them. But these philosophers were compelled,
by the protest of experience, not from their own principles, to confess,
that no slight practice and zeal is needed to control and moderate them:
and this someone endeavoured to illustrate by the example (if I remember
rightly) of two dogs, the one a house-dog and the other a hunting-dog. For
by long training it could be brought about, that the house-dog should become
accustomed to hunt, and the hunting-dog to cease from running after hares.
To this opinion Descartes not a little inclines. For he maintained, that the
soul or mind is specially united to a particular part of the brain, namely,
to that part called the pineal gland, by the aid of which the mind is
enabled to feel all the movements which are set going in the body, and also
external objects, and which the mind by a simple act of volition can put in
motion in various ways. He asserted, that this gland is so suspended in the
midst of the brain, that it could be moved by the slightest motion of the
animal spirits: further, that this gland is suspended in the midst of the
brain in as many different manners, as the animal spirits can impinge
thereon; and, again, that as many different marks are impressed on the said
gland, as there are different external objects which impel the animal
spirits towards it; whence it follows, that if the will of the soul suspends
the gland in a position, wherein it has already been suspended once before
by the animal spirits driven in one way or another, the gland in its turn
reacts on the said spirits, driving and determining them to the condition
wherein they were, when repulsed before by a similar position of the gland.
He further asserted, that every act of mental volition is united in nature
to a certain given motion of the gland. For instance, whenever anyone
desires to look at a remote object, the act of volition causes the pupil of
the eye to dilate, whereas, if the person in question had only thought of
the dilatation of the pupil, the mere wish to dilate it would not have
brought about the result, inasmuch as the motion of the gland, which serves
to impel the animal spirits towards the optic nerve in a way which would
dilate or contract the pupil, is not associated in nature with the wish to
dilate or contract the pupil, but with the wish to look at remote or very
near objects. Lastly, he maintained that, although every motion of the
aforesaid gland seems to have been united by nature to one particular
thought out of the whole number of our thoughts from the very beginning of
our life, yet it can nevertheless become through habituation associated with
other thoughts; this he endeavours to prove in the Passions de l'ame, I. 50.
He thence concludes, that there is no soul so weak, that it cannot, under
proper direction, acquire absolute power over its passions. For passions as
defined by him are "perceptions, or feelings, or disturbances of the soul,
which are referred to the soul as species, and which (mark the expression)
are produced, preserved, and strengthened through some movement of the
spirits." (Passion del l'ame,I.27.) But, seeing that we can join any motion
of the gland, or consequently of the spirits, to any volition, the
determination of the will depends entirely on our own powers; if, therefore,
we determine our will with sure and firm decisions in the direction to which
we wish our actions to tend, and associate the motions of the passions which
we wish to acquire with the said decisions, we shall acquire an absolute
dominion over our passions. Such is the doctrine of this illustrious
philosopher (in so far as I gather it from his own words); it is one
which, had it been less ingenious, I could hardly believe to have proceeded
from so great a man. Indeed, I am lost in wonder, that a philosopher, who
had stoutly asserted, that he would draw no conclusions which do not follow
from self-evident premisses, and would affirm nothing which he did not
clearly and distinctly perceive, and who had so often taken to task the
scholastics for wishing to explain obscurities through occult qualities,
could maintain a hypothesis, beside which occult qualities are commonplace.
What does he understand, I ask, by the union of the mind and the body? What
clear and distinct conception has he got of thought in most intimate union
with a certain particle of extended matter? Truly I should like him to
explain this union through its proximate cause. What clear and distinct
conception has he got of thought in most intimate union with a certain
particle of extended matter? What clear and distinct conception has he got
of thought in most intimate union with a certain particle of extended
matter? But he had so distinct a conception of mind being distinct from
body, that he could not assign any particular cause of the union between the
two, or of the mind itself, but was obliged to have recourse to the cause of
the whole universe, that is to God. Further, I should much like to know,
what degree of motion the mind can impart to this pineal gland, and with
what force can it hold it suspended? For I am in ignorance, whether this
gland can be agitated more slowly or more quickly by the mind than by the
animal spirits, and whether the motions of the passions, which we have
closely united with firm decisions, cannot be again disjoined therefrom by
physical causes; in which case it would follow that, although the mind
firmly intended to face a given danger, and had united to this decision the
motions of boldness, yet at the sight of the danger the gland might become
suspended in a way, which would preclude the mind thinking of anything
except running away. In truth, as there is no common standard of volition
and motion, so is there no comparison possible between the powers of the
mind and the power or strength of the body; consequently the strength of one
cannot in any wise be determined by the strength of the other. We may also
add, that there is no gland discoverable in the midst of the brain, so
placed that it can thus easily be set in motion in so many ways, and also
that all the nerves are not prolonged so far as the cavities of the brain.
Lastly, I omit all the assertions which he makes concerning the will and its
freedom, inasmuch as I have abundantly proved that his premisses are false.
Therefore, since the power of the mind, as I have shown above, is defined by
the understanding only, we shall determine solely by the knowledge of the
mind the remedies against the emotions, which I believe all have had
experience of, but do not accurately observe or distinctly see, and from the
same basis we shall deduce all those conclusions, which have regard to the
mind's blessedness.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 975
Author: Spinoza, Benedictus de
Release Date: Jul 1, 1997
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Translator: Elwes, R. That belief is not orthodox Christianity; it is not,
indeed, Christianity at all; its core nevertheless is a profound belief in
a personal and intimate God. There is nothing in its statements that need
shock or offend anyone who is prepared for the expression of a faith
different from and perhaps in several particulars opposed to his own. The
writer will be found to be sympathetic with all sincere religious feeling.
Nevertheless it is well to prepare the prospective reader for statements
that may jar harshly against deeply rooted mental habits. It is well to
warn him at the outset that the departure from accepted beliefs is here no
vague scepticism, but a quite sharply defined objection to dogmas very
widely revered. Let the writer state the most probable occasion of trouble
forthwith. An issue upon which this book will be found particularly
uncompromising is the dogma of the Trinity. The writer is of opinion that
the Council of Nicaea, which forcibly crystallised the controversies of
two centuries and formulated the creed upon which all the existing
Christian churches are based, was one of the most disastrous and one of
the least venerable of all religious gatherings, and he holds that the
Alexandrine speculations which were then conclusively imposed upon
Christianity merit only disrespectful attention at the present time. There
you have a chief possibility of offence. He is quite unable to pretend any
awe for what he considers the spiritual monstrosities established by that
undignified gathering. He makes no attempt to be obscure or propitiatory
in this connection. He criticises the creeds explicitly and frankly,
because he believes it is particularly necessary to clear them out of the
way of those who are seeking religious consolation at this present time of
exceptional religious need. He does little to conceal his indignation at
the role played by these dogmas in obscuring, perverting, and preventing
the religious life of mankind. After this warning such readers from among
the various Christian churches and sects as are accessible to storms of
theological fear or passion to whom the Trinity is an ineffable mystery
and the name of God almost unspeakably awful, read on at their own risk.
This is a religious book written by a believer, but so far as their
beliefs and religion go it may seem to them more sceptical and more
antagonistic than blank atheism. That the writer cannot tell. He is not
simply denying their God. He is declaring that there is a living God,
different altogether from that Triune God and nearer to the heart of man.
The spirit of this book is like that of a missionary who would only too
gladly overthrow and smash some Polynesian divinity of sharks teeth and
painted wood and mother-of-pearl. To the writer such elaborations as
begotten of the Father before all worlds are no better than intellectual
sharks teeth and oyster shells. His purpose, like the purpose of that
missionary, is not primarily to shock and insult; but he is zealous to
liberate, and he is impatient with a reverence that stands between man and
God. He gives this fair warning and proceeds with his matter.

His matter is modern religion as he sees it. It is only incidentally and
because it is unavoidable that he attacks doctrinal Christianity.

In a previous book, First and Last Things (Constable and Co.), he has
stated his convictions upon certain general ideas of life and thought as
clearly as he could. All of philosophy, all of metaphysics that is, seems
to him to be a discussion of the relations of class and individual. The
antagonism of the Nominalist and the Realist, the opposition of the One
and the Many, the contrast of the Ideal and the Actual, all these
oppositions express a certain structural and essential duality in the
activity of the human mind. From an imperfect recognition of that duality
ensue great masses of misconception. That was the substance of First and
Last Things. In this present book there is no further attack on
philosophical or metaphysical questions. Here we work at a less
fundamental level and deal with religious feeling and religious ideas. But
just as the writer was inclined to attribute a whole world of disputation
and inexactitudes to confused thinking about the exact value of classes
and terms, so here he is disposed to think that interminable controversies
and conflicts arise out of a confusion of intention due to a double
meaning of the word God; that the word God conveys not one idea or set
of ideas, but several essentially different ideas, incompatible one with
another, and falling mainly into one or other of two divergent groups; and
that people slip carelessly from one to the other of these groups of ideas
and so get into ultimately inextricable confusions.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1046
Author: Wells, H. In treating of popular legends and superstitions, the paths of
inquiry are circuitous enough, and seldom can we reach a satisfactory
conclusion until we have travelled all the way around Robin Hood's barn
and back again. I am sure that the reader would not have thanked me for
obstructing these crooked lanes with the thorns and brambles of
philological and antiquarian discussion, to such an extent as perhaps to
make him despair of ever reaching the high road. I have not attempted to
review, otherwise than incidentally, the works of Grimm, Muller, Kuhn,
Breal, Dasent, and Tylor; nor can I pretend to have added anything of
consequence, save now and then some bit of explanatory comment, to the
results obtained by the labour of these scholars; but it has rather been
my aim to present these results in such a way as to awaken general
interest in them. And accordingly, in dealing with a subject which depends
upon philology almost as much as astronomy depends upon mathematics, I
have omitted philological considerations wherever it has been possible to
do so. Nevertheless, I believe that nothing has been advanced as
established which is not now generally admitted by scholars, and that
nothing has been advanced as probable for which due evidence cannot be
produced. Yet among many points which are proved, and many others which
are probable, there must always remain many other facts of which we cannot
feel sure that our own explanation is the true one; and the student who
endeavours to fathom the primitive thoughts of mankind, as enshrined in
mythology, will do well to bear in mind the modest words of Jacob Grimm, himself
the greatest scholar and thinker who has ever dealt with this class of
subjects,"I shall indeed interpret all that I can, but I cannot
interpret all that I should like."

      PETERSHAM, September 6, 1872.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1061
Author: Fiske, John
Release Date: Oct 1, 1997
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1061_6a74d541-bae9-4e6d-9618-1ccaf8a4540a.jpg?v=1671250028
the-memorabilia-gb-1177
The Memorabilia

The Memorabilia

I have often wondered by what arguments those who indicted (1) Socrates
could have persuaded the Athenians that his life was justly forfeit to the
state. The indictment was to this effect: "Socrates is guilty of crime in
refusing to recognise the gods acknowledged by the state, and importing
strange divinities of his own; he is further guilty of corrupting the
      young."

In the first place, what evidence did they produce that Socrates refused
to recognise the gods acknowledged by the state? Was it that he did not
sacrifice? or that he dispensed with divination? On the contrary, he was
often to be seen engaged in sacrifice, at home or at the common altars of
the state. Nor was his dependence on divination less manifest. Indeed that
saying of his, "A divinity (2) gives me a sign," was on everybody's lips.
So much so that, if I am not mistaken, it lay at the root of the
imputation that he imported novel divinities; though there was no greater
novelty in his case than in that of other believers in oracular help, who
commonly rely on omens of all sorts: the flight or cry of birds, the
utterances of man, chance meetings, (3) or a victim's entrails. Even
according to the popular conception, it is not the mere fowl, it is not
the chance individual one meets, who knows what things are profitable for
a man, but it is the gods who vouchsafe by such instruments to signify the
same. This was also the tenet of Socrates. Only, whereas men ordinarily
speak of being turned aside, or urged onwards by birds, or other creatures
encountered on the path, Socrates suited his language to his conviction.
"The divinity," said he, "gives me a sign." Further, he would constantly
advise his associates to do this, or beware of doing that, upon the
authority of this same divine voice; and, as a matter of fact, those who
listened to his warnings prospered, whilst he who turned a deaf ear to
them repented afterwards. (4) Yet, it will be readily conceded, he would
hardly desire to present himself to his everyday companions in the
character of either knave or fool. Whereas he would have appeared to be
both, supposing (5) the God-given revelations had but revealed his own
proneness to deception. It is plain he would not have ventured on forecast
at all, but for his belief that the words he spoke would in fact be
verified. Then on whom, or what, was the assurance rooted, if not upon
God? And if he had faith in the gods, how could he fail to recognise them?

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1177
Author: Xenophon, 431 BCE-350?
