There are many books on the subject,
histories written under the auspices of the Mormon church, which are
hopelessly biased as well as incomplete; more trustworthy works which
cover only certain periods; and books in the nature of "exposures" by
former members of the church, which the Mormons attack as untruthful, and
which rest, in the minds of the general reader, under a suspicion of
personal bias. Mormonism, therefore, to-day suggests to most persons only
one doctrinepolygamyand only one leaderBrigham Young,
who made his name familiar to the present generations. Joseph Smith, Jr.,
is known, where known at all, only in the most general way as the founder
of the sect, while the real originator of the whole scheme for a new
church and of its doctrines and government, Sidney Rigdon, is known to few
      persons even by name.

The object of the present work is to present a consecutive history of the
Mormons, from the day of their origin to the present writing, and as a
secular, not as a religious, narrative. The search has been for facts, not
for moral deductions, except as these present themselves in the course of
the story. Since the usual weapon which the heads of the Mormon church use
to meet anything unfavorable regarding their organization or leaders is a
general denial, this narrative has been made to rest largely on Mormon
sources of information. It has been possible to follow this plan a long
way because many of the original Mormons left sketches that have been
preserved. Thus we have Mother Smith's picture of her family and of the
early days of the church; the Prophet's own account of the revelation to
him of the golden plates, of his followers' early experiences, and of his
own doings, almost day by day, to the date of his death, written with an
egotist's appreciation of his own part in the play; other autobiographies,
like Parley P. Pratt's and Lorenzo Snow's; and, finally, the periodicals
which the church issued in Ohio, in Missouri, in Illinois, and in England,
and the official reports of the discourses preached in Utah, all
showing up, as in a mirror, the character of the persons who gave this
Church of Latter Day Saints its being and its growth.

In regard to no period of Mormon history is there such a lack of accurate
information as concerning that which covers their moves to Ohio, thence to
Missouri, thence to Illinois, and thence to Utah. Their own excuse for all
these moves is covered by the one word "persecution" (meaning persecution
on account of their religious belief), and so little has the non-Mormon
world known about the subject that this explanation has scarcely been
challenged. Much space is given to these early migrations, as in this way
alone can a knowledge be acquired of the real character of the
constituency built up by Smith in Ohio, and led by him from place to place
until his death, and then to Utah by Brigham Young.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2443
Author: Linn, William Alexander
Release Date: Dec 1, 2000
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2443_a84a9480-ff57-4ecd-a4ee-99e0afc30967.jpg?v=1671253304
history-of-the-catholic-church-from-the-renaissance-to-the-french-revolution-volume-2-gb-2455
History of the Catholic Church from the Renaissance to the French Revolution — Volume 2

History of the Catholic Church from the Renaissance to the French Revolution — Volume 2

Please take a look at the important information in this header.
We encourage you to keep this file on your own disk, keeping an
electronic path open for the next readers. The Bridegroom is
our Lord Jesus Christ, and human nature is the bride, whom God has
made in His own image and likeness. He placed her at first in the
most exalted, the most beautiful, the richest and most fertile place
on earthin paradise. He subjected to her all the creatures; He
adorned her with graces; and He laid a prohibition upon her, in
order that by obedience she might deserve to be established in an
eternal union with her Bridegroom, and never more fall into any
affliction, trouble, or guilt. Then came a deceiverthe infernal,
envious foe, under the guise of a cunning serpent. He deceived the
woman, and the two together deceived the man, who possessed the
essence of human nature. So the enemy despoiled human nature, the
bride of God, by his deceitful counsels, and she was driven into a
strange country; poor and miserable, a prisoner and oppressed,
persecuted by her enemies, as if she could never more return to her
country and the grace of reconciliation. But when God saw that the
time was come, and took pity on the sufferings of His beloved, He
sent His only Son to earth, in a rich abode and a glorious
templethat is to say, in the body of the Virgin Mary. There he
married His bride, our nature, and united it to His Person, by means
of the pure blood of the noble Virgin. The priest who joined the
Bride and Bridegroom was the Holy Spirit; the angel Gabriel
announced the marriage, and the blessed Virgin gave her consent. So
Christ, our faithful Bridegroom, united our nature to His, and
visited us in a strange land, and taught us the manners of heaven
and perfect fidelity. And He laboured and fought like a champion
against our enemy, and He broke the prison and gained the victory,
and His death slew our death, and His blood delivered us, and He set
us free in baptism under the life-giving waters, and enriched us by
His sacraments and gifts, that we might go forth, as He said,
adorned with all virtues, and might meet Him in the abode of His
glory, to enjoy Him throughout all eternity.
Now the Master of truth, Christ, saith: "See, the Bridegroom
cometh, go forth to meet Him." In these words Jesus, our Lover,
teaches us four things. In the first word He gives a command, for He
says, "See." Those who remain blind, and those who resist this
command are condemned without exception. In the next word He shows
us what we shall seethat is to say, the coming of the Bridegroom,
when He says, "The Bridegroom cometh." In the third place, He
teaches us and commands us what we ought to do, when He says, "Go
forth." In the fourth place, when He says, "to meet Him," He shows
us the reward of all our works and of all our life, for that must be
a loving "going forth," by which we meet our Bridegroom.
We shall explain and analyse these words in three ways, first,
according to the ordinary mode of the beginner's lifethat is to
say, the active life, which is necessary to all who would be saved.
In the second place, we shall analyse these words by applying them
to the inner life, exalted and loving, to which many men arrive by
the virtues and by the grace of God. Thirdly, we shall explain them
by applying them to the superessential and contemplative life, to
which few attain and which few can taste, because of the supreme
sublimity of this life.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4664
Author: Inge, William Ralph
Release Date: Nov 1, 2003
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/4664_c83b51f3-e8c6-4309-a876-91eb3b7b5d9e.jpg?v=1671278575
the-life-of-the-venerable-mother-mary-of-the-incarnation-gb-6486
The Life of the Venerable Mother Mary of the Incarnation

The Life of the Venerable Mother Mary of the Incarnation

The materials for the following Biography have been gathered principally
from "The Life of the Mother Mary of the Incarnation" by her son, and
from "The History of the Ursuline Monastery at Quebec," by a member of
that community, the former published in 1677; the latter in 1863.
The Life of the Venerable Mother by her son, is founded partly on her own
communications regarding the graces with which she had been favoured, and
partly on her correspondence with himself extending over the thirty years
which she passed in Canada. As Mr. Bastow has taken the proper steps to obtain
correct information, all that I shall ask at his hands is that he
publish the account entire, ungarnished, and without
misrepresentation.

I was born in the town of Sharon, Windsor co., Vermont, on the
23d of December, A.D. 1805. When ten years old my parents removed
to Palmyra, New York, where we resided about four years, and from
thence we removed to the town of Manchester.

My father was a farmer and taught me the art of husbandry. When
about fourteen years of age I began to reflect upon the importance
of being prepared for a future state, and upon enquiring [of] the
plan of salvation I found that there was a great clash in
religious sentiment; if I went to one society they referred me to
one plan, and another to another, each one pointing to his own
particular creed as the summum bonum of perfection: considering
that all could not be right, and that God could not be the author
of so much confusion I determined to investigate the subject more
fully, believing that if God had a church it would not be split up
into factions, and that if he taught one society to worship one
way, and administer in one set of ordinances, He would not teach
another, principles which were diametrically opposed. Believing
the word of God I had confidence in the declaration of James; "If
any man lack wisdom let him ask of God who giveth to all men
liberally and upbraideth not and it shall be given him," I retired
to a secret place in a grove and began to call upon the Lord,
while fervently engaged in supplication my mind was taken away
from the objects with which I was surrounded, and I was enwrapped
in a heavenly vision and saw two glorious personages who exactly
resembled each other in features and likeness, surrounded with a
brilliant light which eclipsed the sun at noon-day. They told me
that all religious denominations were believing in incorrect
doctrines and that none of them was acknowledged of God as His
Church and kingdom. And I was expressly commanded to "go not after
them," at the same time receiving a promise that the fullness of
the gospel should at some future time be made known unto me.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 6720
Author: Smith, Joseph
Release Date: Oct 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

Memoir of Father Vincent de Paul; religious of La Trappe

The reply of Maximilian to the wealthy courtier who tendered him a
goodly purse of gold for a title of nobility, was worthy of that
emperor: "I can enrich thee," he said, "but only thy own virtue can
enoble thee" All true grandeur, excellence, and dignity, are the
offspring of virtue. Even the most renowned oracles of paganism
proclaim this, and the very persecutors of holiness are often
constrained to pay homage to their victim. No wonder, then, that
whenever we are privileged to find one of those rare mortals, whom
virtue has unmistakably marked as her own, we lovingly attach an
exceptional importance to everything connected with his history. Such
assuredly was he whose "account of what befel" him during his first
ten years in America, is now for the first time published in English.
A brief sketch of the religious Order to which he belonged, of the
life he led, and of the Monastery he founded, may give added interest
to his own simple and edifying narrative.
What Scripture terms "the world," and so emphatically denounces as
such, is the poisonous source of the mother-evils described by St.
John as "the concupiscence of the flesh, and the concupiscence of the
eyes, and the pride of life." Flight from the contamination of this
threefold inordinate love of pleasures, riches and honors, being
essential to salvation, is most easily, most surely and most
meritoriously achieved by those who, in answer to a Divine call,
consecrate and give themselves wholly to God, by the practice of the
evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty and obedience. Those who
embrace this angelic profession form the choice portion of the fold
of Christ. They rank as His spouses, and, by the holy ambition of
their virgin love, console Him for the craven defections or the cold
indifference of so many Christians.
All Christians animated by the spirit of Jesus are religious, just
as they are holy, and kings and priests (I Peter 2,9). Such is the
unity of the marvellous body of Christ, the Church, whose soul is
infinite love, that her every member shares, in some sense and
measure, all her sublime prerogatives. But as God willed that in His
family some goods should be common to all, so He likewise decreed
that other goods should be reserved to comparatively few, and through
these chosen and privileged ones benefit the rest. Hence, as besides
this elementary royalty and priesthood conferred by baptism, there
are, according to the express order of God superior and official
royalties and priesthoods, in like manner besides the fundamental
religion, which is the vital breath of every soul in a state of
grace, there is a religion more eminent, more definite, more perfect.
Thus as there is here below a sacerdotal and royal state, so likewise
is there a religious state which is confined to those only who bind
themselves by vows to a monastic life. It is evident, therefore, that
when Catholics use the expression "religious Order," or term a monk
or nun "a religious," they are perfectly justified in doing so, the
cavillings of Dr. Trench to the contrary notwithstanding.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 6733
Author: Vincent de Paul, Father
Release Date: Oct 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Origin and Permanent Value of the Old Testament

During the past generation the Old Testament has commanded equally with
the New the enthusiastic and devoted study of the great body of biblical
scholars throughout the world. Two out of every three graduate students
in our universities who specialize in the general field of biblical
literature choose the Old as the special centre of their work. At the
same time the tendency of the rank and file of the Christian church
within the past decade has undoubtedly been to neglect the older
Testament. Preachers as a rule select less than a fourth of their texts
from it; the prevailing courses of Bible study devote proportionately
less time to it; and teachers and scholars in the great majority of
cases turn to the Old Testament with much less enthusiasm than they
do to the New. Why are these two great currents setting in opposite
directions, and what are the causes of the present popular neglect of
the Old Testament? If the Old Testament should be relegated to a second
place in our working canon of the Bible, let us frankly and carefully
define our reasons. If, on the other hand, the prevailing apathy and
neglect are due to ignorance of the real character and value of the Old
Testament, let as lose no time in setting ourselves right.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 8566
Author: Kent, Charles Foster
Release Date: Jul 1, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

A Visit to the Monastery of La Trappe in 1817\r - With Notes Taken During a Tour Through Le Perche, Normandy, Bretagne, Poitou, Anjou, Le Bocage, Touraine, Orleanois, and the Environs of Paris.\r

*[NOTE: Suitable reproductions of the illustrations were not available at the time this document was prepared. I had no other aim in writing but to occupy as
rationally as I could the hours of travel, and no other object in
publishing but to impart to others as plainly as I could a portion of
the pleasure I myself experienced. It has somewhere been remarked to
this effect, that if every man of common understanding were to put
down the daily thoughts and occurrences of his life, candidly and
unaffectedly as he experienced them, he must necessarily produce
something of interest to his fellow men, and make a book, which,
though not enlivened by wit, dignified by profundity of reasoning, nor
valuable by extent of research, yet no man perhaps should throw aside
with either weariness or disgust.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 10864
Author: Fellowes, W. He is
familiar with the ordinary places of worship, at least as features in,
the picture of town or village. Here is the parish church where the
English episcopal order has succeeded to the Roman; yonder is the more
modern dissenting chapel, homely or ornate. But, now and then, among the
non-episcopal buildings we find what is called distinctively a 'Meeting
House,' or more briefly a 'Meeting,' which may perhaps be styled 'Old,'
'New,' or 'Great'. Its architecture usually corresponds with the
simplicity of its name. Plain almost to ugliness, yet not without some
degree of severe dignity, stand these old barn-like structures of
brickoccasionally of stone; bearing the mellowing touch of time,
surrounded by a little overshadowed graveyard, they often add a peculiar
quaintness and solemnity to the scene. Mrs. Gaskell has described one
such in her novel Ruth, and admirers of her art should know well that
her own grave lies beside the little sanctuary she pictured so lovingly.
Sometimes, however, the surroundings of the ancient chapel are less
attractive. It stands, it may be, in some poverty-stricken corner or
court of a town or city. Whatever picturesqueness it may have had once
has long since vanished. Unlovely decay, an air of desolation, symptoms
of neglect, present a mournful sight, and one wonders how much longer
the poor relic will remain. Many places of the kind have already been
swept away; others have been renovated, enlarged, and kept more worthy
of their use. Not all the Meeting Houses are of one kind. Independents,
Baptists, and Friends, each possess some of them. Now and again the
notice-board tells us that this is a 'Presbyterian' place of worship,
but a loyal Scot who yearns for an echo of the kirk would be greatly
surprised on finding, as he would if he entered, that the doctrine and
worship there is not Calvinistic in any shape whatever,
butUnitarian.
A similar surprise awaits the visitor to New England, it may be even a
greater. For if he should tread In the footsteps of the Pilgrim Fathers
and find the 'lineal descendants' of their original places of worship at
Plymouth, Salem, or Boston, he will find Unitarians in possession. So
it is in many of the oldest towns founded by the American colonists of
the seventeenth century. In their centres the parish churches, 'First,'
'Second,' or otherwise, stand forth challenging everybody's attention.
There is no lack of self-assertion here, nothing at all like the
shrinking of the Old English Presbyterian into obscure alleys and
corners. Spacious, well appointed, and secure, these Unitarian parish
churches, in the words of a popular Unitarian poet, 'look the whole
world in the face, and fear not any man.'
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 11142
Author: Tarrant, W. And
although the presbytery, few in number, were thus diminished, yet, being
still resolved to prosecute their former design, they renewed their
appointment upon another brother, who, in consequence of his
undertaking, was allowed a cessation from his other public work, in
order to expedite the proposed draft: and now, when nothing was expected
that should retard the finishing of such a necessary work, the
lamentable fire of division, that had long been smothered, unhappily
broke forth into a violent flame, whereby the presbytery was rent
asunder, and that brother, on whom the appointment was formerly laid,
happening to be of the separating party, a second stop was not only put
to the publication of this testimony, but the presbytery, from the
absence of a brother removed to a distant part of the world, together
with the paucity of their number, were almost wholly discouraged from
attempting again what they had been oftener than once disappointed in.
But notwithstanding of the above, with many other difficulties which we
shall not at present take notice of, the presbytery, still considering,
that, even in their present circumstances, when their number is few and
despicable, their adversaries many, and such as are in repute in the
world, whereby the opposition made to them, and the conspiracy formed
against the covenanted testimony of the church of Scotland maintained by
them, must needs be strong; there is yet a gracious door of opportunity
left open for them to attempt, in their judicative capacity, the
prosecution and accomplishment of the necessary work formerly proposed;
and which they could not but judge the Lord still called them unto,
while after all the above-mentioned breaches made upon them, he still
continued to give them a nail in his holy place, and a wall in Judah and
Jerusalem, Ezra ix, 8, 9, they therefore again laid their appointments
upon some others to prepare a draft of An Act, Declaration, and
Testimony, &c., and which, under the favor of Divine Providence, has at
length been finished and laid before the presbytery. We only need to
observe further with reference to this, that the long delay of what is
now agreed upon did not proceed from any design in the presbytery, of
depriving either the people of their particular inspection, or the
generation, of any benefit that might be obtained by a work of this
nature, but partly from the fewness of their number, and great extent of
their charge, and partly from the great distance of members' residence
from each other, whereby they can seldom have access to meet all
together, for expediting this or any other work of public concern they
have in hand.
It is, therefore, with an eye to the Wonderful Counselor (when Zion's
faithful counselors are so few) for light and direction in the
management of this great and important work, that the presbytery have
resolved upon the publication hereof at this time, for the reasons which
follow:
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 13200
Author: Reformed Presbytery of North America
Release Date: Aug 17, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

A Short History of Monks and Monasteries

The aim of this volume is to sketch the history of the monastic
institution from its origin to its overthrow in the Reformation
period, for although the institution is by no means now extinct,
its power was practically broken in the sixteenth century, and no
new orders of importance or new types have arisen since that
time.
A little reflection will enable one to understand the great
difficulties in the execution of so broad a purpose. It was
impracticable in the majority of instances to consult original
sources, although intermediate authorities have been studied as
widely as possible and the greatest caution has been exercised to
avoid those errors which naturally arise from the use of such
avenues of information. It was also deemed unadvisable to burden
the work with numerous notes and citations. Such notes as were
necessary to a true unfolding of the subject will be found in the
appendix.
A presentation of the salient features of the [pg 6] whole history was
essential to a proper conception of the orderly development of the
ascetic ideal. To understand the monastic institution one must not
only study the isolated anchorite seeking a victory over a sinful
self in the Egyptian desert or the monk in the secluded cloister,
but he must also trace the fortunes of ascetic organizations,
involving multitudes of men, vast aggregations of wealth, and
surviving the rise and fall of empires. Almost every phase of human
life is encountered in such an undertaking. Attention is divided
between hermits, beggars, diplomatists, statesmen, professors,
missionaries and pontiffs. It is hoped the critical or literary
student will appreciate the immense difficulties of an attempt to
paint so vast a scene on so small a canvas. Instead of being drawn together as brethren by the cords
of that one faith which all Catholics hold dear, their sentiments
of sympathy and affection have been absorbed by the abhorrence with
which each body has regarded the characteristic tenets of its
adversary; whilst the terms "heretic" on the one side, and
"idolater" on the opposite, have rendered any attempt to bring
about a free and friendly discussion of each other's views almost
hopeless.
Every Christian must wish that such animosities, always
ill-becoming the servants and children of the God of love, should
cease for ever. Especially, the author desires to treat the literature of
the social question and of the modernist movement with a fulness
which has not been possible within the limits of this sketch. The
philosophy of religion and the history of religions should have
place, as also that estimate of the essence of Christianity which
is suggested by the contact of Christianity with the living
religions of the Orient.
The Protestant Reformation marked an era both in life and
thought for the modern world. It ushered in a revolution in Europe.
It established distinctions and initiated tendencies which are
still significant. These distinctions have been significant not for
Europe alone. They have had influence also upon those continents
which since the Reformation have come under the dominion of
Europeans. Yet few would now regard the Reformation as epoch-making
in the sense in which that pre-eminence has been claimed. No one
now esteems that it separates the modern from the medival
and ancient world in the manner once supposed. The perspective of
history makes it evident that large areas of life and thought
remained then untouched by the new spirit. Assumptions which had
their origin in feudal or even in classical culture continued
unquestioned. More than this, impulses in rational life and in the
interpretation of religion, which showed themselves with clearness
in one and another of the reformers themselves, were lost sight of,
if not actually repudiated, by their successors. It is possible to
view many things in the intellectual and religious life of the
nineteenth century, even some which Protestants have passionately
reprobated, as but the taking up again of clues which the reformers
had let fall, the carrying out of purposes of their movement which
were partly hidden from themselves.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 15780
Author: Moore, Edward Caldwell
Release Date: May 7, 2005
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Record of a Quaker Conscience, Cyrus Pringle's Diary - With an Introduction by Rufus M. Jones

The body of this little book consists of the personal diary of a young
Quaker named Cyrus Guernsey Pringle of Charlotte, Vermont. He was
drafted for service in the Union Army, July 13th, 1863. Under the
existing draft law a person who had religious scruples against engaging
in war was given the privilege of paying a commutation fine of three
hundred dollars. This commutation money Pringle's conscience would not
allow him to pay. A prosperous uncle proposed to pay it surreptitiously
for him, but the honest-minded youth discovered the plan and refused to
accept the well meant kindness, since he believed, no doubt rightly,
that this money would be used to pay for an army substitute in his
place. The Diary relates in simple, nave style the experiences which
befell the narrator as he followed his hard path of duty, and
incidentally it reveals a fine and sensitive type of character, not
unlike that which comes so beautifully to light in the Journal of John
Woolman.
This is plainly not the psychological moment to study the highly complex
and delicate problem of conscience. The strain and tension of world
issues disturb our judgment. We cannot if we would turn away from the
events and movements that affect the destiny of nations to dwell calmly
and securely upon our own inner, private actions. It is never easy, even
when the world is most normal and peaceful, to mark off with sharp lines
the area of individual freedom. No person ever lives unto himself or is
sufficient to himself. He is inextricably woven into the tissue of the
social group. His privileges, his responsibilities, his obligations are
forever over-individual and come from beyond his narrow isolated life.
If he is to be a rational being at all he must relate his life to
others and share in some measure their triumphs and their tragedies.
But at the same time the most precious thing in the universe is that
mysterious thing we call individual liberty and which even God himself
guards and respects. Up to some point, difficult certainly to delimit, a
man must be captain of his soul. He cannot be a person if he does not
have a sphere of power over his own act. To treat him as a puppet of
external forces, or a mere cog in a vast social mechanism, is to wipe
out the unique distinction between person and thing. Somewhere the free
spirit must take its stand and claim its God-given distinction. If life
is to be at all worth while there must be some boundary within which the
soul holds its own august and ultimate tribunal. That Sanctuary domain
within the soul the Quakers, ever since their origin in the period of
the English Commonwealth, have always guarded as the most sacred
possession a man can have.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 16088
Author: Pringle, Cyrus G. If the ground is no longer so unoccupied as
it was then, it appears to them that there is still abundant room for
the book which they now lay before the public. Their main subject is
expressly the English Church, and they write as English Churchmen,
taking, however, no narrower basis than that of the National Church
itself.
They desire to be responsible each for his own opinions only, and
therefore the initials of the writer are attached to each chapter he has
written.

The claim which the intellectual and religious life of England in the
eighteenth century has upon our interest has been much more generally
acknowledged of late years than was the case heretofore. There had been,
for the most part, a disposition to pass it over somewhat slightly, as
though the whole period were a prosaic and uninteresting one. Every
generation is apt to depreciate the age which has so long preceded it as
to have no direct bearing on present modes of life, but is yet not
sufficiently distant as to have emerged into the full dignity of
history. Besides, it cannot be denied that the records of the eighteenth
century are, with two or three striking exceptions, not of a kind to
stir the imagination. It was not a pictorial age; neither was it one of
ardent feeling or energetic movement. Its special merits were not very
obvious, and its prevailing faults had nothing dazzling in them, nothing
that could be in any way called splendid; on the contrary, in its weaker
points there was a distinctly ignoble element. The mainsprings of the
religious, as well as of the political, life of the country were
relaxed. In both one and the other the high feeling of faith was
enervated; and this deficiency was sensibly felt in a lowering of
general tone, both in the domain of intellect and in that of practice.
The spirit of feudalism and of the old chivalry had all but departed,
but had left a vacuum which was not yet supplied. As for loyalty, the
half-hearted feeling of necessity or expedience, which for more than
half the century was the main support of the German dynasty, was
something different not in degree only, but in kind, from that which had
upheld the throne in time past. Jacobitism, on the other hand, was not
strong enough to be more than a faction; and the Republican party, who
had once been equal to the Royalists in fervour of enthusiasm, and
superior to them in intensity of purpose, were now wholly extinct. The
country increased rapidly in strength and in material prosperity; its
growth was uninterrupted; its resources continued to develop; its
political constitution gained in power and consolidation. But there was
a deficiency of disinterested principle. There was an open field for the
operation of such sordid motives and debasing tactics as those which
disgraced Walpole's lengthened administration.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 16791
Author: Abbey, Charles J. It will be found
that Father Hecker has three words in this book to my one, though all
my words I tried to make his. His journals, letters, and recorded
sayings are the edifice into which I introduce the reader, and my
words are the hinges and latchets of its doors. I am glad of this,
for it pleases me to dedicate my good will and my poor work to
swinging open the doors of that new House of God that Isaac Hecker
was to me, and that I trust he will be to many.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 18283
Author: Elliott, Walter
Release Date: Apr 29, 2006
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Covenants And The Covenanters - Covenants, Sermons, and Documents of the Covenanted Reformation

The Covenants, Sermons, and Papers in this volume
carry the readers back to some of the brightest periods
of Scottish history. They mark important events in that
great struggle by which these three kingdoms were
emancipated from the despotisms of Pope, Prince, and
Prelate, and an inheritance of liberty secured for these
Islands of the Sea. The whole achievements of the
heroes of the battlefields are comprehended under that
phrase of Reformers and Martyrs, "The Covenanted
Work of Reformation." The attainments of those stirring
times were bound together by the Covenants, as by rings
of gold.
The Sermons here were the product of the ripe thought
of the main actors in the various scenesmen of piety,
learning, and renown. In the old world the
intimate and organic union of the church with the State left little
liberty in this respect. When, therefore, the early Lutheran immigrants
in this country were disposed to form themselves into congregations, to
adopt regulations for their own government, to settle their relations to
other Lutheran congregations, to determine the order of worship to be
observed, they had to feel their way in the dark. No little time passed
before all these matters became settled on a permanent basis. To follow
them in their efforts to obtain a satisfactory organization of the
congregation, is what I propose now to do.
There is grave reason to doubt whether, prior to the arrival in
Pennsylvania of Henry Melchior Muehlenberg, any of the German Lutheran
congregations in Pennsylvania had a well-developed, clearly defined,
written constitution. I have carefully examined all the written records
of nearly all the congregations which were in existence at that time,
and have failed to find evidence of any such constitution. The first
known written constitution of the church at Philadelphia was introduced
in 1746 by Brunnholtz and Muehlenberg, and it was brief and rudimentary.
The congregation at the Swamp, New Hanover, was the earliest German
congregation in America, begun in 1703 by Justus Falckner, but whatever
the form of organization which it may have received from him, or his
immediate successor, no record of it is known to exist, and the first
written constitution now known is in the hand-writing Muehlenberg. The
Tulpehocken congregations were established by Palatinates from the
Hudson and Mohawk, who came to Pennsylvania in 1723 and 1729. They were
familiar with the congregational organizations in New York under
Kocherthal and Falckner, which were formed under the counsel of Court
Preacher Boehm, probably after the similitude of the Savoy Church in
London, and under the influence of the long established Dutch Lutheran
constitution in New York, based on that at Amsterdam. But no written
constitution is now known in Tulpehocken earlier than that introduced by
Muehlenberg. In all the old congregations the case is the same, so far
as any known evidence proves.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 19422
Author: Schmucker, B. Thornton, and the Online
Distributed Proofreading Team at http://www.pgdp.net

In boundless mercy, the Redeemer left,
The bosom of his Father, and assumed
A servant's form, though he had reigned a king,
In realms of glory, ere the worlds were made,
Or the creating words, "Let there be light"
In heaven were uttered. But though veiled in flesh,
His Deity and his Omnipotence,
Were manifest in miracles. Disease
Fled at his bidding, and the buried dead
Rose from the sepulchre, reanimate,
At his command, or, on the passing bier
Sat upright, when he touched it. But he came,
Not for this only, but to introduce
A glorious dispensation, in the place
Of types and shadows of the Jewish code.
Upon the mount, and round Jerusalem,
He taught a purer, and a holier law,
His everlasting Gospel, which is yet
To fill the earth with gladness; for all climes
Shall feel its influence, and shall own its power.
He came to suffer, as a sacrifice
Acceptable to God. The sins of all
Were laid upon Him, when in agony
He bowed upon the cross. The temple's veil
Was rent asunder, and the mighty rocks,
Trembled, as the incarnate Deity,
By his atoning blood, opened that door,
Through which the soul, can have communion with
Its great Creator; and when purified,
From all defilements, find acceptance too,
Where it can finally partake of all
The joys of His salvation.
But the pure Church he planted, the pure Church
Which his apostles watered, and for which,
The blood of countless martyrs freely flowed,
In Roman Amphitheatres,on racks,
And in the dungeon's gloom, this blessed Church,
Which grew in suffering, when it overspread
Surrounding nations, lost its purity.
Its truth was hidden, and its light obscured
By gross corruption, and idolatry.
As things of worship, it had images,
And even painted canvas was adored.
It had a head and bishop, but this head
Was not the Saviour, but the Pope of Rome.
Religion was a traffic. Men defiled,
Professed to pardon sin, and even sell,
The joys of heaven for money, and to raise
Souls out of darkness to eternal light,
For paltry silver lavished upon them.
And thus thick darkness, overspread the Church
As with a mantle.
At length the midnight of apostacy
Passed by, and in the horizon appeared,
Day dawning upon Christendom. The light,
Grew stronger, as the Reformation spread.
For Luther, and Melancthon, could not be
Silenced by papal bulls, nor by decrees
Of excommunication thundered forth
Out of the Vatican. And yet the light,
Of Luther's reformation, never reached
Beyond the morning's dawn. The noontide blaze
Of Truth's unclouded day, he never saw.
Yet after him, its rising sun displayed
More and more light upon the horizon.
Though thus enlightened, the professing Church,
Was far from many of the precious truths
Of the Redeemer's gospel; and as yet,
Owned not his Spirit's government therein.
But now the time approached, when he would pour
A larger measure of his light below;
And as he chose unlearned fishermen
To spread his gospel when first introduced,
So now he passed mere human learning by,
And chose an instrument, comparable
To the small stone the youthful David used,
To smite the champion who defied the Lord.
Apart from human dwellings, in a green
Rich pasturage of England, sat a youth,
Who seemed a shepherd, for around him there
A flock was feeding, and the sportive lambs
Gambolled amid the herbage. But his face
Bore evidence of sadness. On his knee
The sacred book lay open, upon which
The youth looked long and earnestly, and then,
Closing the book, gazed upward, in deep thought
This was the instrument by whom the Lord
Designed to spread a clearer light below
And fuller reformation. He appeared,
Like ancient Samuel, to be set apart
For the Lord's service from his very birth.
Even in early childhood, he refrained
From youthful follies, and his mind was turned
To things of highest moment. He was filled
With awful feelings, by the wickedness
He saw around him. As he grew in years,
Horror of sin grew stronger; and his mind
Became so clothed with sadness, and so full
Of soul-felt longings, for the healing streams
Of heavenly consolation, that he left
His earthly kindred, seeking quietude
In solitary places, where he read
The book of inspiration, and in prayer,
Sought heavenly counsel.
In this deep-proving season he was told,
Of priests, whose reputation had spread wide
For sanctity and wisdom; and from these
He sought for consolation, but in vain.
One of these ministers became enraged,
Because the youth had inadvertently
Misstepped within his garden; and a priest
Of greater reputation, counselled him
To use tobacco, and sing holy psalms!
And the inquirer found a third to be
But as an empty, hollow cask at best.
Finding no help in man, the youthful Fox,
Turned to a higher and a holier source,
For light and knowledge. In his Saviour's school,
He sat a scholar, and was clearly shown
The deep corruption, that had overspread
Professing Christendom. And one by one,
The doctrines of the Gospel, were unveiled,
To the attentive student,doctrines, which,
Though clearly written on the sacred page,
Had long been hidden, by the rubbish man's
Perversions and inventions heaped thereon.
He saw that colleges, could not confer,
A saving knowledge of the way of Truth,
Nor qualify a minister to preach
The everlasting Gospel; but that Christ,
Is the true Teacher, and that he alone
Has power to call, anoint, and qualify,
And send a Gospel minister to preach
Glad tidings of salvation. He was shown,
No outward building, made of wood and stone
Could be a holy place, and that the Church
The only true and living Churchmust be
A holy people gathered to the Lord,
And to his teaching. He was clearly taught,
The nature of baptism, by which souls
Are purified and fitted for this Church;
That this was not, by being dipped into,
Or sprinkled with clear water, but it was
The one baptism of the Holy Ghost.
He saw the Supper was no outward food,
Made and administered by human hands,
But the Lord's Table was within the heart;
Where in communion with him, holy bread
Was blessed and broken, and the heavenly wine,
Which cheers the fainting spirit, handed forth.
The Saviour showed him that all outward wars,
Are now forbidden, that the warfare here,
Is to be waged within. Its weapons too,
Though mighty, even to the pulling down,
Of the strong holds of Satan, are yet all
The Spirit's weapons. He was shown, that oaths
Judicial or profane, are banished from
The Christian dispensation, which commands,
"Swear not at all." He saw the compliments,
Hat honour, and lip service of the world,
Sprang from pride's evil root, and were opposed
To the pure spirit of Christ's holy law.
And by His inward Light, was clearly seen
The perfect purity of heart and life
For which that Saviour calls, who never asked,
Things unattainable.
These truths and others, being thus revealed,
Fox was prepared and qualified to preach,
The unveiled Gospel, to the sons of men.
Clothed with divine authority, he went
Abroad through Britain, and proclaimed that Light,
Which Christ's illuminating Spirit sheds,
In the dark heart of man. Some heard of this,
Who seemed prepared and waiting, to receive
His Gospel message, and were turned to Him,
Whose Holy Spirit sealed it on their hearts.
And not a few of these, were called upon,
To take the message, and themselves declare
The way of Truth to others. But the Priests,
Carnal professors, and some magistrates,
Heard of the inward light, and purity,
With indignation, and they seized upon,
And thrust the Preacher within prison walls.
Not once alone, but often was he found,
Amid the very dregs of wickedness
With robbers, and with blood-stained criminals,
Locked up in loathsome jails. And when abroad
Upon his Master's service, he was still
Reviled and buffeted, and spit upon.
But none of these things moved him, for within
He felt that soul-sustaining evidence,
Which bore his spirit high above the waves,
Of bitter persecution.
But now the time approached, for his release
From suffering and from labour. He had spent,
Long years in travel for the cause of Truth,
Not all in Britain, for he preached its light,
And power in Holland, the West Indian isles,
And North America. Far through the wild,
And trackless wilderness, this faithful man,
Carried his Master's message; he lived,
To see Truth's banner fearlessly displayed
Upon both continents. He lived to see,
Pure hearted men and women gathered to
The inward teaching of the Saviour's will,
Banded together in the covenant,
Of light and life. But his allotted work,
Was now accomplished, and his soul prepared,
For an inheritance with saints in light,
And with his loins all girded, he put off
His earthly shackles, triumphing in death,
That the Seed reigned, and Truth was over all!
Where the dark waters of the Delaware,
Roll onward to the ocean, sweeping by,
Primeval forests, where the red man still,
Built his rude wigwam, and the timid deer
Fled for concealment from the Indian's eye,
And the unerring arrow of his bow;
There, in the shadow of these ancient woods,
A sea-worn ship has anchored. On her deck,
Men of grave mien are gathered. One of whom,
Of noble figure, and quick searching eyes,
Surveys the scene, wrapt in the deepest thought.
And this is William Penn. He stands among,
Fellow believers, who have sought a home,
And place of refuge, in this wilderness.
Born of an ancient family, his sire
An English Admiral, the youthful Penn,
Might, with his talents, have soon ranked among
The proudest subjects of the British throne.
He chose the better partto serve that King
Who is immortal and invisible.
While yet a student within college halls,
He heard Truth's message, and his heart was reached,
And fully owned it, though it came through one
Of that despised and persecuted class,
Called in derision Quakers. Thus convinced,
He left the college worship, to commune
In spirit with his Maker. And for this,
He was expelled from Oxford; and was soon
Maltreated by his father, who, enraged,
Because his only son, had turned away
From brilliant prospects, to pursue the path
Of self-denial, drove him harshly forth
From the paternal roof. But William Penn,
Had still a Father, who supported him,
With strength and courage to perform his will;
And he was called and qualified to preach,
And to bear witness of that blessed Light
Which shines within. He suffered in the cause,
His share of trial. He was dragged before
Judges and juries, and was shut within
The walls of prisons.
Looking abroad through England, he was filled
With deep commiseration, for the jails
The loathsome, filthy jailswere crowded with
His brethren in the Truth. For their relief,
He sought the ear of royalty, and plead
Their cruel sufferings; and their innocence;
And thus became the instrument through which
Some prison doors were opened. But he sought
A place of refuge from oppression's power,
That Friends might worship the Creator there,
Free from imprisonment and penalties.
And such a place soon opened to his view,
Far in the Western Wilderness, beyond
The Atlantic's wave.
And here is William Penn, and here a band
Of weary emigrants, who now behold
The promised land before them; but it is
The Indian's country, and the Indian's home.
Penn had indeed, received a royal grant,
To occupy it; but a grant from one
Who had no rightful ownership therein;
He therefore buys it honestly from those
Whose claims are aboriginal, and just.
With these inhabitants, behold, he stands
Beneath an ancient elm, whose spreading limbs
O'erhang the Delaware. The forest chiefs
Sit in grave silence, while the pipe of peace
Goes round the circle. They have made a league
With faithful Onasa perpetual league,
And treaty of true friendship, to endure
While the sun shines, and while the waters run.
And here was founded in the wilderness,
A refuge from oppression, where all creeds
Found toleration, and where truth and right
Were the foundation of its government,
And its protection. In that early day,
The infant colony sought no defence
But that of justice and of righteousness;
The only guarantees of peace on earth,
Because they ever breathe, good will to men.
His colony thus planted, William Penn
Sought his old field of labour, and again,
Both through the press and vocally, he plead
The right of conscience, and the rights of man;
And frequently, and forcibly he preached
Christ's universal and inshining Light.
His labour was incessant; and the cares,
And the perplexities connected with
His distant province, which he visited
A second time, bore heavily upon
His burdened spirit, which demanded rest;
That rest was granted. In the midst of all
His labour and his trials, there was drawn
A veil, in mercy, round his active mind,
Which dimmed all outward things; but he still saw
The beauty and the loveliness of Truth,
And found sweet access to the Source of good.
And thus, shut out from the perplexities
And sorrows of the world, he was prepared
To hear the final summons, to put off
His tattered garments, and be clothed upon
With heavenly raiment.
Scotland, thou hadst a noble citizen,
In him of Ury! Born amid thy hills,
Though educated where enticing scenes,
Crowd giddy Paris, he rejected all
The world's allurements, and unlike the youth
Who talked with Jesus, Barclay turned away
From great possessions, and embraced the Truth.
He early dedicated all the powers
Of a well cultivated intellect
To the Redeemer and His holy cause.
He was a herald, to proclaim aloud,
Glad tidings of salvation; and his life
Preached a loud sermon by its purity.
Not only were his lips made eloquent,
By the live coal that touched them, but his pen,
Moved by a force from the same altar, poured
Light, truth, and wisdom. From it issued forth
The great Apology, which yet remains
One of the best expositors of Truth
That man has published, since that sacred book
Anciently written. Seekers are still led
By its direction, to that blessed Light,
And inward Teacher, who is Jesus Christ.
But now, this noble servant of the Lord,
Rests from his faithful labour, while his works
Yet follow him.
Early believers in the light of Truth,
Dwelt not at ease in Zion. They endured
Conflicts and trials, and imprisonments.
Even the humble Penington, whose mind
Seemed purged and purified from all the dross
Of human naturewho appeared as meek
And harmless as an infantwas compelled
To dwell in loathsome prisons. But he had,
Though in the midst of wickedness, sublime
And holy visions of the purity,
And the true nature of Christ's living Church.
While Edmundson, the faithful pioneer
Of Truth in Ireland, was compelled to drink
Deeply of suffering for the blessed cause.
Dragged from his home, half naked, by a mob
Who laid that home in ashes, he endured
Heart-rending cruelties. But all of these,
Stars of the morning, felt oppression's hand,
And some endured it to the closing scene.
Burroughs, a noble servant of the Lord,
Whose lips and pen were eloquent for Truth,
Drew his last breath in prison. Parnel, too,
A young and valiant soldier of the Lamb,
Died, a true martyr in a dungeon's gloom.
Howgill and Hubberthorn, both ministers
Of Christ's ordaining, were released from all
Their earthly trials within prison walls.
And beside these, there was a multitude
Of faithful men, and noble women too,
Who past from scenes of conflict, to the joys
Of the Redeemer's kingdom, within jails,
And some in dungeons. But amid it all,
Light spread in Britain, and a living Church
Was greatly multiplied. The tender minds,
Even of children, felt the power of Truth,
And showed the fruit and firmness it affords.
When persecution, rioted within
The town of Bristol, and all older Friends
Were locked in prison, little children met,
Within their place of worship, by themselves,
To offer praises, in the very place
From which their parents had been dragged to jail.
But let us turn from Britain, and look down,
Upon an inland sea whose swelling waves
Encircle Malta. There a cloudless sun,
In Eastern beauty, pours its light upon
The Inquisition. All without its walls
Seems calm and peaceful, let us look within.
There, stretched upon the floor, within a close,
Dark, narrow cell, inhaling from a crack
A breath of purer air, two women lie.
But who are these, and wherefore are they here?
These are two ministers of Christ, who left
Their homes in England, faithfully to bear,
The Saviour's message into eastern lands.
And here at Malta they were seized upon
By bigotted intolerance, and shut
Within this fearful engine of the Pope.
Priests and Inquisitor assail them here,
And urge the claims of popery. The rack,
And cruel deaths are threatened; and again
Sweet liberty is offered, as the price
Of their apostacy. All, all in vain!
For years these tender women have been thus,
Victims of cruelty. At times apart,
Confined in gloomy, solitary cells.
But all these efforts to convert them failed:
The Inquisition had not power enough
To shake their faith and confidence in Him,
Whose holy presence was seen anciently
To save his children from devouring flames;
He, from this furnace of affliction, brought
These persecuted women, who came forth
Out of the burning, with no smell of fire
Upon their garments, and again they trod,
Their native land rejoicing.
In Hungary, two ministers of Christ,
Were stretched upon the rack. Their tortured limbs
Were almost torn asunder, but no force
Could tear them from their Master, and they came
Out of the furnace, well refined gold.
Nor were these all who suffered for the cause
Of truth and righteousness, in foreign lands.
For at Mequinez and Algiers, some toiled,
And died in slavery. But nothing could
Discourage faithful messengers of Christ
From his required service. They were found
Preaching repentance where the Israelites
Once toiled in Egypt, and the ancient Nile
Still rolls its waters. And the holy light
Of the eternal Gospel was proclaimed,
Where its great Author had first published it
Where the rich temple of King Solomon,
Stood in its ancient glory. Even there,
The haughty Musselmen, were told of Him,
The one great Prophet, who now speaks within.
For their refusing to participate
In carnal warfare, many early Friends,
Were made to suffer. On a ship of war
Equipped for battle, Richard Sellers bore,
With a meek, Christian spirit, cruelties
The most atrocious, for obeying Him
Who was his heavenly Captain, and by whom,
War is forbidden. Sellers would not touch,
The instruments of carnage, nor could all
The cruelties inflicted, move his soul
From a reliance on that holy Arm,
Which had sustained him in the midst of all
His complicated trials; and he gained
A peaceful, but a greater victory
Than that of battle, for he wearied out
Oppression, by his constancy, and left
A holy savor, with that vessel's crew.
But let us turn from persecuting scenes,
That stain the annals of the older world,
To young America, whose virgin shores
Offer a refuge from oppression's power.
Here lies a harbour in the noble bay
Of Massachusetts. Many little isles
Dot its expanding waters, and Nahant
Spreads its long beach and eminence beyond,
A barrier to the ocean. The whole scene,
Looks beautiful, in the clear northern air,
And loveliness of morning. On the heights
That overlook the harbour, there is seen
An infant settlement. Let us approach,
And anchor where the Puritans have sought,
For liberty of conscience. But there seems,
Disquietude in Boston. Men appear
Urged on by stormy passions, and some wear
A look of unrelenting bitterness.
But what is that now rising into view,
Where crowds are gathered on an eminence?
These are the Puritans. They now surround
A common gallows. On its platform, stands
A lovely woman in the simple garb
Worn by the early Quakers. Of the throng,
She only seems unmoved, although her blood
They madly thirst for.
The first professors of Christ's inward Light,
Who brought this message into Boston bay,
Were inoffensive women. They were searched
For signs of witchcraft, and their books were burned.
The captain who had brought them, was compelled
To carry them away. But others came,
Both men and women, zealous for the Truth.
These were received with varied cruelties
By frequent whippings and imprisonments.
Law after law was made excluding them;
But all in vain, for still these faithful ones
Carried their Master's message undismayed
Among the Puritans, and still they found
Those who received it, and embraced the Truth,
And steadily maintained it, in the midst
Of whipping posts, and pillories, and jails!
A law was then enacted, by which all
The banished Quakers, who were found again
Within the province, were to suffer death.
But these, though ever ready to obey
All just enactments, when laws trespassed on
The rights of conscience, and on God's command,
Could never for a moment hesitate,
Which to obey. And soon there stood upon
A scaffold of New England, faithful friends,
Who, in obeying Christ, offended man!
Of these was Mary Dyer, who exclaimed,
While passing to this instrument of death,
"No eye can witness, and no ear can hear,
No tongue can utter, nor heart understand
The incomes and refreshings from the Lord
Which now I feel." And in the spirit which
These words a little pictured, Robinson,
Past to the presence of that Holy One
For whom he laboured, and in whom he died.
Then Stevenson, another faithful steward
And servant of the Lamb, was ushered from
Deep scenes of suffering into scenes of joy.
But Mary Dyer, who was all prepared,
To join these martyrs in their heavenward flight,
Was left a little longer upon earth.
But a few fleeting months had rolled away,
Ere this devoted woman felt constrained,
Again to go among the Puritans,
In Massachusetts, and in Boston too.
And here she stands! the second time, upon
A gallows of New England. No reprieve
Arrests her sentence now. But still she feels
The same sweet incomes, and refreshing streams
From the Lord's Holy Spirit. In the midst
Of that excited multitude, she seems
The most resigned and peaceful. But the deed
Is now accomplished, and the scene is closed!
Among the faithful martyrs of the Lamb,
Gathered forever round His Holy Throne,
She doubtless wears a pure and spotless robe,
And bears the palm of victory.
The blood of Leddra was soon after shed,
Which closed the scene of martyrdom among
The early Quakers in this colony,
But not the scene of suffering. Women were
Dragged through its towns half-naked, tied to carts,
While the lash fell upon their unclothed backs,
And bloody streets, showed where they past along.
And such inhuman treatment was bestowed
On the first female minister of Christ,
Who preached the doctrine of his inward Light.
But in New England, there was really found
A refuge from oppression, justice reigned
Upon Rhode Island. In that early day,
The rights of conscience were held sacred there,
And persecution was a thing unknown.
A bright example, as a governor,
Was William Coddington. He loved the law
The perfect law of righteousnessand strove
To govern by it; and all faithful Friends
Felt him a brother in the blessed Truth.
In North America, the Puritans
Stood not alone in efforts to prevent
The introduction and the spread of light.
The Dutch plantation of New Amsterdam,
Sustained a measure of the evil work.
The savage cruelties inflicted on
The faithful Hodgson, have few parallels
In any age or country; but the Lord
Was with His servant in the midst of all,
And healed his tortured and his mangled frame.
The early Friends were bright and shining stars,
For they reflected the clear holy light
The Sun of Righteousness bestowed on them.
They followed no deceiving, transient glare
No ignis fatuus of bewildered minds;
They followed Jesus in the holiness
Of His unchanging Gospel. They endured
Stripes and imprisonment and pillories,
Torture and slavery and banishment,
And even death; but they would not forsake
Their Holy Leader, or His blessed cause.
Their patient suffering, and firm steadfastness,
Secured a rich inheritance for those
Who have succeeded them. Do these now feel
That firm devotion to the cause of TruthThat
singleheartedness their fathers felt?
Do they appreciate the price and worth
Of the great legacy and precious trust
Held for their children? The great cruelties
Borne by the fathers, have not been entailed
On their descendants, who now dwell at ease.
The world does not revile them. Do not some
Love it the more for this? and do they not
Make more alliance with it, and partake
More and more freely of its tempting baits,
Its fashions and its spirit? but are these
More pure and holy than they were of old,
When in the light of Truth, their fathers saw
That deep corruption overspread the world?
Other professors latterly have learned
To speak of Quakers with less bitterness
Than when the name reproachfully was cast
In ridicule upon them. Has not this
Drawn watchmen from the citadel of Truth?
Has it not opened doors that had been closed,
And should have been forever? And by these,
Has not an enemy been stealing in,
To spoil the goods of many; to assail,
And strive in secrecy to gather strength,
To overcome the citadel at last?
Is it not thought illiberal to refuse
Alliances with those who now profess
Respect and friendship? Must the Quaker then
Bow in the house of Rimmon, saying, Lord
Pardon in this thy servant? Do not some
Fail to resist encroachments, when they come
Clothed in enticing words, and wear the guise
Of charity and kindness, and are veiled,
Or sweetened to the taste, by courtesy?
But is a snare less certain, when concealed
By some enticing bait? or is a ball
Less sure and fatal, when it flies unheard,
Or, when the hand that sends it is unseen,
Or offers friendship? Did not Joab say,
"Art thou in health my brother?" and appeared
To kiss Amasa, while he thrust his sword
Into his life-blood? And when Jonas fled
From the Lord's service, and the stormy waves
Threatened the ship that bore him, was the cause
Not found within it? Was there not a calm
When he, whose disobedience to the Lord
Had raised the tempest, was no longer there?
Truth has a standard openly displayed,
Untornunsullied. Man indeed may change,
And may forsake it; but the Standard still
Remains immutable. May all who love
This Holy Banner, rally to it now!
May all whose dwellings are upon the sand,
Seek for a building on that living Rock,
Which stands forever;for a storm has come
A storm that tries foundations! Even now,
The flooding rains are falling, and the winds
Rapidly rising to a tempest, beat
Upon all dwellings. They alone can stand
Which have the Rock beneath them, and above
The Omnipresent and Omnipotent
Creator and Defender of His Church!

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 19482
Author: Anonymous
Release Date: Oct 6, 2006
Format: eBook
Language: English
Publisher: Joseph Kite & Co., Printers
Publication Date: 1846

Fables of Infidelity and Facts of Faith - Being an Examination of the Evidences of Infidelity

This is not so much a volume upon the Evidences of Christianity, as an
examination of the Evidences of Infidelity. When the Infidel tells us
that Christianity is false, and asks us to reject it, he is bound of
course to provide us with something better and truer instead; under
penalty of being considered a knave trying to swindle us out of our
birthright, and laughed at as a fool, for imagining that he could
persuade mankind to live and die without religion. Suppose he had proved
to the world's satisfaction that all religion is a hoax, and all men
professing it are liars, how does that comfort me in my hour of sorrow?
Scoffing will not sustain a man in his solitude, when he has nobody to
scoff at; and disbelief is only a bottomless tub, which will not float
me across the dark river. If Infidels intend to convert the world, they
must give us some positive system of truth which we can believe, and
venerate, and trust.
A glimmering idea of this necessity seems lately to have dawned upon
some of them. It is quite possible that they have also felt the want of
something for their own souls to believe; for an Infidel has a soul, a
poor, hungry, starved soul, just like other men. At any rate, having
grown tired of pelting the Church with the dirtballs of Voltaire and
Paine, they begin to acknowledge that it is, after all, an institution;
and that the Bible is an influential book, both popular and useful in
its way. Mankind, it seems, will have a Church and a Bible of some sort;
why not go to work and make a Church and a Bible of their own?
Accordingly they have gone to work, and in a very short time have
prepared a variety of ungodly religions, so various that the
worldly-minded man who can not be suited with one to his taste must be
very hard to please. Discordant and contradictory in their positive
statements, they are agreed only in negatives; denying the God of the
Bible, the resurrection of the dead, and judgment to come. Nevertheless
each discoverer or constructor presents his system to the world with
great confidence, large claims to superior benevolence, vast pretensions
to [Pg 2]learning and science, and no little cant about duty and piety.
Wonderful to tell, some of them are very fond of clothing their
ungodliness in the language of Scripture.
No pains are spared to secure the wide spread of these notions.
Prominent Infidels are invited to deliver courses of scientific
lectures, in which the science is made the medium of conveying the
Infidelity. Scientific books, novels, magazines, daily newspapers, and
common school books, are all enlisted in the work. The disciples of
Infidelity are numerous and zealous. It would be hard to find a factory,
boarding-house, steamboat or hotel where twelve persons are employed,
without an Infidel; and harder still to find an Infidel who will not use
his influence to poison his associates.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 19566
Author: Patterson, Robert
Release Date: Oct 17, 2006
Format: eBook
Language: English

History of Dogma, Volume 1

In the six years that have passed since the appearance of
the second edition I have continued to work at the book, and
have made use of the new sources and investigations that have
appeared during this period, as well as corrected and extended
my account in many passages. Hugh Binning

As thou art in thyself a rare jewel, a most precious stone, one of a thousand, yea, of
ten thousand, being compared with the many thousands of common stones, I mean,
external professors in the visible church, who rest on a bare name, and of whom that
is verified in every nation, which our Saviour saith, Matth. xx. 16. Many are
called, but few are chosen; and of many of whom that is also too true in every
generation, (and, oh! that it were not too manifest in this also,) which Paul observed
in his time, Phil. iii. 18, 19. For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and
now tell you, even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ. Whose
end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who
mind earthly things, and as to Christ thy Lord, most comely as the lily among
thorns, being his love among the daughters, Cant. ii. 2. so also, thou, in a
special way, art the dearly beloved and longed for, the joy and crown, of every sincere
servant of Christ in the gospel, Phil. iv. 1. Thou art, if not the only, yet the chief
object of their labours, their work being either to confirm and strengthen thee in
thy way, that thou mayest so stand fast in the Lord, or remove impediments, make
crooked things straight, and so prepare the way of the Lord before thee, or to guide
thee by the light of God's word in the dark night of temptation and desertion. Now, as
we are confident these sermons were preached at first by that blessed, serious labourer
in the work of the ministry, Mr. Hugh Binning, with a special eye to the advancement
of sincere seekers after fellowship with God, and seriously heaven-ward-tending
Christians amongst his hearers, so to whom shall we direct this posthumous,
and alas! unperfected work, but to thee, (O serious Christian,) who makest it thy
work not only to seek after the knowledge of God in Christ, in a mere speculative
way, that thou mayest know, and therein rest, as if thy work were done, but also to
follow after the enjoyment of that known God, and believed on Saviour, and all
the promised privileges of grace in this life, and of eternal glory in the life to come.
To thee especially belong these precious soul-ravishing truths delivered in these
sermons. Two things, we know, thou hast determined thy soul unto, and fixed thine
eye on, as thine aim and mark in thy generation, viz. the light of knowledge and
the life of practice. As to knowledge, we are confident that with the apostle Paul,
1 Cor. ii. 2. thou hast determined to know nothing but Christ, and him crucified;
and as to practice, with the said apostle thou prayest, that thou mayest be sincere
and without offence till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of
righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ unto the glory of God, Phil. i. 10, 11; and
that thou mayest be blameless and harmless, the son of God without rebuke in the
midst of a crooked and perverse nation, shining as a light in the world, Phil. ii. 15.
Now in reading these sermons thou shalt perceive, that to help thee in both these,
hath been the very scope and design of this serious preacher. Desirest thou to
know Jesus Christ the Lord of life, either according to his eternal subsistence in the
infinite understanding of the Father, as God, or as to his appearance in the flesh, as
Man, or fitness as Mediator, to reconcile thee to God his Father, both in respect of
willingness and ability to save? Then here thou shalt behold him delineate to the
[pg 270]
life. Wouldst thou be clearly informed anent220 the only true and sure foundation of
fellowship with God, the way of entertaining it, the honour or happiness of it, and
sweet fruits of it, that fulness of joy that accompanies it? Here shalt thou find
so clear a light as shall rejoice thy soul. Wouldst thou be fortified against the
incursions and recursions of sin and Satan? Then come to this magazine, and be furnished
abundantly. Desirest thou to have thy soul increased in the love of God,
and to see manifest demonstrations of his love in Christ to thee? Oh! then turn
in hither, and get satisfaction to thy soul's desires. If thou desirest with David, to
hate sin with a perfect hatred, here, if any where, thou shalt obtain thy desire.
Yet let none think that we limit the benefit and usefulness of these sermons to serious
Christians only, and so by consequence exclude all others from any hope of soul-advantage
in reading them. Nay, we declare, that though it be undeniable, that
John did write this epistle with a special respect to the spiritual advantage of serious
Christians, and that this holy preacher also had this same design, yet we dare be
bold to invite all of what degree soever, to the serious perusing of them, assuring
them that in so doing they shall not find their labour in vain in the Lord, for here
are such pregnant demonstrations of a Deity, infinite, eternal, omnipotent,
incomprehensible, governing all things by the word of his power, as may dash the boldness
of the most metaphysical, notional, or profanely practical atheist, and with conviction
of spirit make him cry out, as in Psal. lxxiii. 22. So foolish was I and ignorant,
I was as a beast before thee! Here are such clear discoveries of the vileness of sin,
of its direct opposition to a holy God, and his most holy will, of its woful soul-damning
effects, as may convince the most profane and stout-hearted carnalist, and awake
him out of his soul-destroying sleep of security and presumption. Here are so glorious
evidences of God's free and inconceivable love to the world, in Christ Jesus the
Son of his love, as are able to enlighten with the light of consolation, the sadliest
dejected and casten down soul, under the apprehension of the curse and wrath of
God due to it for sin, and raise it up to the hope of mercy in and through so clearly
a revealed Saviour. In a word, here are to be found convictions for atheists, piercing
rebukes to the profane, clear instructions to the ignorant, milk to babes in Christ,
strong meat for the strong, strength to the weak, quickening and reviving for such
as faint in the way, restoratives for such as are in a decay, reclamations and loud
oyeses221
after backsliders to reveal them, breasts of consolations for Zion's mourners,
whether under the first convictions of the law, and pangs of the new birth, or under
the challenges and compunctions of heart for recidivations and relapses after conversion,
even while they are groaning under the power and burden of the body of death,
Rom. vii. And to add no more, here are most excellent counsels and directions to
serious seekers of fellowship with God, to guide them in their way, and help them
forward to the attainment of that fulness of a joy which is to be had in fellowship
with the Father and the Son. That the Lord may bless all such to whose hands
these sermons shall come, with blessings suitable to their soul's condition, especially
the serious Christian, for whose soul's furtherance and advancement these sermons
were first penned, and now printed, is the most affectionate desire of,

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 24238
Author: Binning, Hugh
Release Date: Jan 10, 2008
Format: eBook
Language: English

American Lutheranism, Volume 2\r - The United Lutheran Church (General Synod, General Council, United Synod in the South)

As appears from this second volume, our chief object is to record the
facts as to the theological attitude of the various Lutheran bodies in
America, with such comment only as we deemed necessary.
THE UNITED LUTHYERAN CHURCH..1-11

Merger..1

Constitution..5

Character..9

THE GENERAL SYNOD.12-175

Organization.12

Character.19

Constitution.22

Evaluation25

Doctrinal Basis.32

Basis Interpreted..40

Unionism..48

Union Letter of 1845..58

Christian Union.63

Theology Reformed..68

Revivalism76

"American Lutheranism"89

Definite Platform Controversy.101

Position of District Synods toward Platform..111

General Synod's Attitude toward Platform..117

York Convention123

Secessions and Separations.130

Influential Theologians.136

Missouri's Influence.153

Explanatory Statements of Doctrinal Basis.158

Restatement of Basis.161

Actual Conditions.166

Un-Lutheran Practise.170

THE GENERAL COUNCIL.176-227

Synods Composing the Council..176

Charles Porterfield Krauth.181

Other Representative Theologians.187

Constitution190

Subtile Unionism..195

The Four Points198

Akron-Galesburg Rule.202

Interdenominational Fellowship204

Attitude toward Lodges..207

Chiliasm.210

Other Aberrations.212

Romanism.214

Synergism217

Liberalistic Trends..220

Equivocal Doctrinal Attitude..224

THE UNITED SYNOD SOUTH.228-243

Organization228

Doctrinal Basis229

Indifferentism.232

Un-Lutheran Practise.234

Tennessee and Holston Synods..236

Common Service.241

1. Origin of the New Body.On April 18, 1917, at Philadelphia, the
Joint Quadricentennial Committee, appointed by the General Synod, the
General Council, and the United Synod in the South to arrange for a
union celebration of the Reformation, decided that the merging of the
three affiliated general bodies would be "the fittest commemoration and
noblest memorial of the four-hundredth Reformation Jubilee." Accordingly,
the presidents of these bodies, being present, were requested to form a
joint committee, which should prepare a constitution for a united Church
and present the same to the three general bodies for their consideration,
and, if approved, for submission to the District Synods. The
constitution, framed by the committee, was in the same year adopted by
all of the three general bodies, the General Synod, which, in 1820, had
been founded for the express purpose of uniting all Lutheran synods in
America, being the first to assent to the Merger during its session at
Chicago, June 20 to 27, 1917. The various District Synods also having
approved of the union and having ratified the constitution, the Merger
was consummated at New York City, November 15, 1918. Dr. F. H. Knubel, a
member of the General Synod, was elected President of the new body
"The United Lutheran Church in America." Of the total number of
Lutherans in America (63 synods, 15,243 congregations, 9,790 pastors,
2,450,000 confirmed and 3,780,000 baptized members) the United Church
embraces 45 synods, 10 theological seminaries with 46 professors and 267
students, 17 colleges, 6 academies, 3,747 congregations and
mission-posts, 2,754 pastors, almost 1,000,000 baptized members, and
758,000 confirmed members, the General Synod contributing 364,000, the
General Council 340,000, and the United Synod in the South 53,000. The
United Church is the second largest Lutheran body in America, the
Synodical Conference outnumbering it by only about 50,000 confirmed
members. The merged bodies will continue to exist legally until no
property rights are imperiled. Months ago I
said to a beloved relative that during the greater part of my life I had
more to do than I could well accomplish, and that now, with health and
strength in a measure restored, I sometimes thought I had not enough to
do. He said: "Why not write the reminiscences of your Indian life?" The
counsel struck me as good, and I have acted on it.
My theme has not the advantage of novelty: I cannot tell of a new
country explored, and a new people brought within the knowledge of the
world; but it has the advantage of greatness and variety. I am not aware
that any book on Indian Missions has achieved signal success. I do not
think, however, a single one has been written in vain. That must have
been a singularly poor book on so great a subject which has not had
something in it fitted to interest and inform readers. That must have
been a very solitary, lonely missionary, who has had no friends ready to
listen to what he has had to say. These books may have received little
general attention; but here and there, as the result of their perusal,
there has been a more intelligent apprehension of our work, deeper
sympathy with us, and heartier support rendered to us. I have ventured
to add a volume to those already pub[Pg viii]lished in the hope that it may do
some good before it passes into the oblivion which necessarily awaits
most of the productions of the press.
A glance at the contents of this volume will show it takes up a number
of subjects, some of which are merely touched in most books on Missions,
and others not at all. Reminiscences, especially when they spread over
many years, and embrace great events, admit of very discursive
treatment. They leave the writer unfettered to take up any subject
within his wide scope which he may deem fitted to interest his readers.
I have allowed myself the freedom thus afforded me. My aim has been to
take my readers with me to our Indian home, to see us at our work, to
hear us conversing with the people, to accompany us on our journeys, to
surround them in thought with our surroundings, so that they may realize
our position, trials, difficulties, and joys. I have throughout
maintained the standpoint of one whose Indian life has been devoted to
Mission work. In the year 1553, one Friday morning, August 4, the eve
of the feast of Our Lady of the Snows, while St. Ignatius was in the
garden, I began to give him an account of my soul, and, among other
things, I spoke to him of how I was tempted by vain glory. The
spiritual advice he gave me was this: "Refer everything that you do to
God; strive to offer Him all the good you find in yourself,
acknowledging that this comes from God, and thank Him for it." The
advice given to me on this occasion [Pg 10]was so consoling to me that I
could not refrain from tears. St. Ignatius then related to me that for
two years he had struggled against vain glory; so much so, indeed,
that when he was about to embark for Jerusalem at Barcelona he did not
dare to tell any one where he was going. He told me, moreover, that
since that time his soul had experienced great peace in regard to this
matter.
An hour or two later we went to dinner, and, while Master Polancus and
I were dining with him, St. Ignatius said that Master Natalis and
others of the Society had often asked him to give a narrative of his
life, but he had never as yet decided to do so. On this occasion,
however, after I had spoken to him, he reflected upon it alone. He was
favorably inclined toward it. From the way he spoke, it was evident
God had enlightened him. He had resolved to manifest [Pg 11]the main points
of his interior life up to the present, and had concluded that I was
the one to whom he would make these things known.
At that time St. Ignatius was in very feeble health. He did not
promise himself one day of life, but, on the contrary, if any one were
to say, "I shall do that within two weeks or a week," St. Ignatius was
accustomed to say: "How is that? Do you think you are going to live
that long?" However, on this occasion, he said he hoped to live three
or four months to finish the narrative. The next day when I asked him
when he wished to begin, he answered that I should remind him every
day until he had an opportunity for it. As he could not find time,
partly on account of his many occupations, he told me to remind him of
it every Sunday. In the following September he called me, and began to
relate his whole [Pg 12]life clearly and distinctly with all the
accompanying circumstances. Afterward, in the same month, he called me
three or four times, and told me the history of his life up to the
time of his dwelling at Manresa. The method followed by St. Ignatius
is so clear that he places vividly before our eyes the events of the
past.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 24534
Author: Ignatius, of Loyola
Release Date: Feb 6, 2008
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: O'Conor, J. This will account for its homely garb, and apologize for it, if apology be necessary. Frank Allen had no time to spend upon mere style in anything he wrote. The soul-ensnaring
error of the greatest part of men, who choose to
themselves such a way to the kingdom of heaven as
is broad, and smooth, and easy, and but little or nothing
at all displeasing to flesh and blood, like
him that tumbled down upon the grass and said,
Utinam hoc esset laborare. 2. Our brethren also helping together by
prayer for us, that for the mercy bestowed on us
by means of the prayers of many, thanks may be
given by many on our behalf. The Lord liveth,
and blessed be my Rock: and let the God of my salvation
be exalted, Psal. xviii, 46; He is our God;
and we will prepare for him an habitation; our father's
God, and we will exalt him, Exod. xv. 2;
Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who
only doeth wondrous things. But previous to
the opening of this tragical train of examples, (of the Lord's righteous
justice and judgment on his and his church's enemies) let the following
few particulars be observed. And,
1st, Let none think that this is a subject foreign or remote to either
scripture, apocrypha, or history. No; I might instance Cain, the
proto-persecutor and murderer; Pharaoh, who was drowned in the Red sea;
Corah and others, who were swallowed up quick and burnt before the Lord;
Saul, who finished his own regicide; wicked Joram, whose bowels fell
out; apostate Joash and Jehoiakim, who burnt the roll, came to
ignominious ends: Ahab and Zedekiah, false prophets, whom the king of
Babylon roasted in the fire; Haman, who was hanged: Antiochus Epiphanes,
who was eaten of vermin, and rotted while alive; Melenaus the apostate,
who was smothered to death in ashes; Herod, who killed the children of
Bethlehem, and had the same fate with Antiochus; Herod Antipas, who
killed John Baptist; Herodias and Salmon the dancer came to(iv) fearful
ends: Judas and Caiaphas became their own executioners; Pilate also
ended his own wretched life; Herod Agrippa was eaten up of worms: Nero
and all the succeeding emperors, authors of the ten persecutions; Philip
II. of Spain, Charles IX. Henry III. and IV. kings of France, Dukes of
Guise, Anjou, Austria, &c. the cardinals Wolsey and Pool, bloody Mary
of England, bishop Gardiner, with an immense number more both of this
and inferior ranks, too tedious here to mention, came all to deserved
wretched deaths suitable to such wicked and bloody lives.Nay, God will
have such reverence paid to what bears the name of deity and religion,
that even amongst the very heathens, who had not the knowledge of the
true God, those who blasphemed or affronted the gods, robbed their
temples, or mal-treated and persecuted their priests, did not pass
without some public mark of divine displeasure, (of which I might give a
number of instances from history, were it needful). They are far from being the most important
of its incidents. Their importance has perhaps
been exaggerated, and their purport is commonly
misunderstood. My object is to place them in their
true relation to other incidents. It is useless to study
them apart; they cannot be understood except as
details of a connected history. I shall confine myself,
however, to a narrow, question: assuming the general
history, I shall ask how the several Acts of Uniformity
come into it, with what purpose and with what ultimate
effect. To study immediate effects would be to
engage in too wide an inquiry.
We owe thanks to the men who drafted the
statutes of the sixteenth century for their long argumentative
preambles. These are invaluable as showing
the occasion and purpose of the Acts. We shall not
go to them for an uncoloured record of factstheir
unsupported assertions will hardly, indeed, be taken as
evidence for facts at all; but they tell us to what facts
the legislator wished to call attention, and in what
light he would have them regarded. The preamble
of the first Act of Uniformity is among the most
illuminating, and with its help we can assemble the
facts in relation to which the purport of the Act must
be determined.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 28659
Author: Lacey, T. And His Time

The history of Pius IX. will always be read with interest.
His Pontificate was, indeed, eventful. In no preceding age
were the annals of the Church so grandly illustrated.

The spiritual sovereignty, with which, to use the words
of a British statesman, there is nothing on this earth that
can at all compare, was crowned with surpassing glory.
Doctrines which, hitherto, had been open to theological discussion,
were ascertained and pronounced to be in accordance
with the belief of all preceding Christian ages. The Church
was enabled, through the labors of her Chief and the zeal of
her Priesthood, to extend vastly the place of her tent. The
life of Pius IX. himself was a marvel and a glory. None of
his predecessors, not even Peter, attained to his length of days.

On the other hand, the venerable Pontiff, and, together with
him, the Catholic people, were doomed to behold and lament
the loss of the time-honored patrimony of St. Peter. The
Papacy, however, unlike all temporal sovereignties, was able
to sustain so great a loss. More ancient than its temporal
power, it still survives; not a mere antique, but in undiminished
vigor.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 29143
Author: Dawson, Æneas MacDonell
Release Date: Jun 17, 2009
Format: eBook
Language: English

Presbyterian Worship: Its Spirit, Method and History

The worship of the sanctuary is a living subject of discussion and
practice in the Presbyterian Churches of the world at large, and,
within late years, in that of the Canadian Dominion. Many earnest
minds are approaching the study of the subject from various
standpoints, each worthy of attentive consideration. One regards it
from the dogmatic position of scriptural precedent, or from the larger
one of Christian principle; the aesthetic mind comes to it with visions
of order and beauty; the practical, with his view of the Church's needs
in mission fields and in mixed congregations. There is room in the
discussion for the largest statement of lawful opinion, founded on
conviction of absolute right, and on Christian expediency, and for the
exercise of abundant charity.

Dr. Johnston gives no uncertain sound on the subject. To his mind the
duty of the Church, first and last, is to preserve spirituality of
worship, and to discountenance everything that may tend to interfere
with the same. But, while this spirit pervades his work, his method is
historical, and thus preeminently fair and impartial in statement. The
presentation of the argument in concrete or historical form invests it
with an interest which could hardly be commanded by either dogmatic or
practical methods, while it excludes neither.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 30675
Author: Johnston, Robert
Release Date: Dec 14, 2009
Format: eBook
Language: English
