The record is not that of the life of a
nation but of the scattered remnants of a race. It was inevitable that
under the influence of their varied environment, the survivors of the
Jewish race should develop very different beliefs and characteristics.
The result is that many different currents of thought and shades of belief
are reflected in the literature of this period; some of it is dross, but
much of it is purest gold. While the period following the destruction of
Jerusalem was a reflective and a retrospective age in which the teaching
of the earlier priests and prophets gained wide acceptance, it was also a
creative era. Fully half of the literature of the Old Testament and all of
the important writings of the Apocrypha come from these tragic five
centuries. Although the historical records are by no means complete, the
great crises in Israel's life are illuminated by such remarkable
historical writings as the memoirs of Nehemiah, the first book of
Maccabees, and the detailed histories of Josephus.
The majority of the writings, however, reveal above all the soul of the
race. Out of its anguish and suffering came the immortal poems found in
Isaiah 40-66, the book of Job, and the Psalter. Instead of the distinctly
nationalistic point of view, which characterizes practically all of the
writings of the pre-exilic period, the interest becomes individual and the
outlook universal. During these centuries Israel's prophets, priests,
and sages became not merely teachers of the nation but of humanity.
Conspicuous among the great teachers of his day stands the noble sage,
Jesus the son of Sirach, who gleaned out and presented in effective form
that which was most vital in the earlier teaching of his race. In his
broad, simple faith in God and man, in his emphasis on deeds and
character, as well as ceremonial, and in his practical philosophy of life
he was a worthy forerunner of the Great Teacher whose name he bore.
This period represents the culmination and fruition of the divine
Influences at work in Israel's early history. It was during this period
that Judaism was born and attained its full development, Israel accepted
the absolute rule of the written law, and the scribes succeeded the earlier
prophets and sages. Out of the heat and conflict of the Maccabean
struggle the parties of the Pharisees and Sadducees sprang into existence
and won their commanding place in the life of Judaism. Hence this period
is the natural historical introduction to the study of the birth and early
development of Christianity. It is also the link that binds the revelation
found in the Old Testament to that of the New.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 11701
Author: Kent, Charles Foster
Release Date: Mar 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Covenanters of Damascus; A Hitherto Unknown Jewish Sect

Among the Hebrew manuscripts recovered in 1896 from the
Genizah of an old synagogue at Fostat, near Cairo, and now in
the Cambridge University Library, England, were found eight
leaves of a Hebrew manuscript which proved to be fragments of
a book containing the teaching of a peculiar Jewish sect; a single
leaf of a second manuscript, in part parallel to the first, in part
supplementing it, was also discovered. But what the exact
nature of the change is, and what we are to deduce
from it, is a matter of debate, for the facts are only
known to professional students and to a few others
who may have been led to interest themselves in the
subject. With some, for instance, the idea prevails
that the Old Testament has been so discredited by
modern research that its religious significance is now
practically worthless. Others believe that the results
arrived at are untrue, and regard them as the outcome
of wicked attacks made upon the veracity of the
Word of God by men whose scholarship is a cloak for
their sinister designs or a mask of their incapacity
to comprehend its spiritual message. There is perhaps
a middle course open to some who have found
a message of God to their souls in the Old Testament,
and who, on hearing that the authorship of this book
has been questioned or the historicity of that passage
assailed, are unmoved, because they believe that itviii
does not matter who wrote the Pentateuch or the
Psalms so long as through these documents they
hear the voice of the living Word of God. Here
then is a subject on which there exists a distressing
confusion, and, moreover, a subject in which ignorance
plays no small part. Save with a few devout souls who
have made a long and continuous study of the Scriptures,
it may be doubted whether there is any widespread
knowledge of the actual message of the Old
Testament, even among Christian people. There
are certainly many people willing to defend the
authority of the Bible who spend very little time in
reading it. The favourite Psalms and the evangelical
passages of Isaiah are probably well known, and
beyond this there is but the knowledge gained in
early days, from which stand out in the memory
the personalities of Samson and Saul, David and
Goliath, and Daniel in the lion's den, together with
the impressive stories of the Flood, the destruction
of Sodom and Gomorrah, the crossing of the Red
Sea, and the fall of Jericho. A very little is probably
carried away from the public reading of the Scriptures
in places of worship. It cannot be said that this
acquaintance conveys any real impression of the
magnificent message that lies embedded in these
thirty-nine books which go to make up the Old
Testament. Now whatever harm may be charged to
the modern methods, it can at least be claimed thatix
neglected portions have been carefully studied, the
meaning of obscure passages discovered, and much
of importance and interest brought to light; but
more than this, it has been discovered that the
essential message of the Old Testament lies largely
apart from those narratives and personalities that
impress the superficial reader, and rather in the
record of a gradual development of the conception of
God and of His purpose in calling Israel to be the
recipient of His self-disclosure. It has been found
that the striking figures of the landscape are of less
importance than the road that winds among them
along which revelation moves to its final goal.
It may be objected that the new inspiration, which
so many who have studied the Scriptures by these
methods claim to have felt, throws quite a new
emphasis on our conception of the Old Testament
and is revolutionary of all that we have been accustomed
to believe concerning it; that the methods
are such as could not legitimately be applied to the
Word of God, and are the products of a criticism
which is puffed up with a sense of its own superiority;
and that the results are discreditable to the Old
Testament, since they allege that some of the narratives
are unhistorical, some passages and even whole books
unauthentic, and traditions on which the gravest
issues have been staked shown to have nothing more
than a legendary basis. There is much in thesex
objections that is natural, but much that is misunderstanding.
It is true that the contribution which the
Old Testament makes to religion is estimated differently
from what it was fifty years ago, and it must be
allowed that this brings a charge of having misunderstood
the Scriptures against generations of scholars
and saints. But it is admitted that all matters of
knowledge are open to misunderstanding. It is no
argument against the conception that the earth moves
round the sun, that the contrary idea was held in
other ages. We know that the understanding of the
Old Testament has been obscured, often by those
who ought to have been the greatest authorities on
its meaning. Jesus read into the Scriptures a meaning
unrecognised by the authorities of His day, and
dealt with them in a fashion that was regarded as
revolutionary. To some of the Scriptures He appealed
as to a final authority, but others He regarded as
imperfect and only suited to the time in which they
were written. The Jews of His day venerated every
letter of the sacred writings, and regarded the very
copies of the Law as sacred to the touch, and yet on
their understanding of the Scriptures they rejected
the mission and message of Jesus. Christian scholarship
has undoubtedly followed rather after the Rabbis
than after Christ. The message of the Old Testament
that the new methods have made clear
certainly appears to be more in conformity with thexi
Spirit of Christ than with that of His opponents, and if
this is revolutionary then it is no new thing; religion
always moves along such lines.
Great offence has been caused and insuperable
prejudice aroused among many by the name under
which these methods have become known. The
name, "higher criticism," conveys to most people a
suggestion of carping fault-finding and an assumption
of superiority. This is due to an entire misunderstanding
of a technical term. Criticism is
nothing more than the exercise of the faculty of
judgment, and, moreover, judgment that ought to
be perfectly fair. The sinister suggestion that is
conveyed in the word is due to the fact that our
criticisms are so often biassed by personal prejudices.
But this only condemns our faults, and not the
method. "Higher" criticism does not mean any
assumption of superiority, but is simply a term
used to distinguish it from "lower" criticism. The
criticism that endeavours to ascertain the original
text by a comparison of the various documents
available is called lower, and that which deals
with matters higher up the stream of descent by
which the writings have been conveyed to us, namely,
matters of date and authorship, is called higher
criticism. It might well be called literary and historical
criticism, in distinction from textual criticism.
It employs historical methods, and uses the simplexii
tests of comparison and contemporaneity. For the
understanding of a particular age, it prefers those
documents that describe the times in which they
were written, and give indirect evidence, rather than
those histories which were written long after the event
and which reveal a purpose other than the strictly
historical. Fortunately, we have in the Old Testament
many such contemporary and indirect witnesses
in the writings of the Prophets. They are
not consciously writing history, but they tell us
indirectly what the practices of their day were, and
especially what religious ideas were prevalent; for
it is these things that they feel called upon to attack.
With these reliable standards we can compare the
regular histories, which were necessarily written at a
much later age, and very often to serve some religious
purpose.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 45952
Author: Orchard, W. I have left out much that
would necessarily be included in a system, and confined
myself to a limited portion of what can be proved to be
the matter of the Hebrew myths. Even within the actual
domain of my labours, I was not anxious to subject the
extant narratives in all their minutest features to mythological
analysis. The application of the certain results of
the science of Mythology in general to a domain hitherto
almost ignored with reference to this subject, could only
be accomplished by some self-limitation on the part of the
author; and my immediate task was only to show that
Semitism in general, and Hebrew in particular, could not
be exceptions to the laws of mythological enquiry established
on the basis of psychology and the science of language,
and that it is possible from Semitism itself, on
psychological and philological principles, to construct a
scientific Semitic Mythology.
By blindly tracing out copious matters of detail, the
investigator of myths is very easily and unconsciously
seduced to the slippery ground of improbabilities; and
therefore I preferred, in the first instance, to enlarge only
on subjects on which I was confident of being able to present
what was self-evident, and in these only, so to speak,
to reveal the first cellular formations, from which later
growths were produced, and to leave the analysis of the
entire substance, and of the separate elements which complete
the conception of the mythical figures, to a future
time, when the science will have gained a firmer footing
even on the Semitic domain, and will have less distrust
and misunderstanding to contend against. I am myself
responsible for this limitation of the subject, in the service
of which, encouraged by kind friends, I resolved to publish
the following pages. In mythological affairs I acknowledge
myself a pupil of the school established on the
Aryan domain by Ad. Kuhn and Max Mller. Only in
certain points, which, however, occasionally touch upon
first principles, I have been compelled to differ from the
masters of Comparative Mythology. It may be boldly
asserted that, especially through Max Mllers literary
labours, Comparative Mythology and the Science of
Religion have been added to those chapters of human
knowledge with which certain borderlands of science cannot
dispense, and which can claim to have become an essential
portion of general culture.[2] This conviction must
excuse frequent copiousness of exposition, which I have
adopted knowingly and intentionally. I have had in my
eye not only the small circle of professional mythologists
on the Aryan and other domains, but also the larger circle
of educated readers who will be interested in learning
how the results of Comparative Mythology shape themselves
when applied to Semitic nations. But, on the other
hand, I must crave the indulgence of the latter readers,
if I have not always succeeded (especially in the fifth
chapter) in making my meaning as intelligible as I could
wish. For it is a fact that the Semitic still remains
further removed from the mind of educated society than
the Aryan, which, through the study of classical antiquity,
has so ensnared us from our school-days with its
irresistible charms, that it can never cease to determine
the direction of our thought and action. Therefore I
have had resort to foreign examples, sometimes non-Semitic
instances from antiquity, sometimes instances
from modern poets, for illustrations of particular assertions,
which otherwise would appear improbable, but
could thus be brought nearer to the understanding.
From the figures used by poets the wealth and variety of
the mythical apperception of the primeval man is truly
elucidated. Here and there I have also permitted myself
to make reference to Hungarian idioms, which was very
natural, as I originally composed this book in my Hungarian
mother-tongue for the purpose of University lectures,
and then translated it myself into German. Some
parts of these essays have been already published in
Hungarian, in a different connexion and with special
reference to linguistic results, in the first and second
parts of Vol. XII. of the Nyelvtudomnyi Kzlemnyek
(Philological Essays), edited by Paul Hunfalvy for the
Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
In adducing Aryan parallels, I am very far from
thinking that where the Hebrew exhibits a striking similarity
to something Aryan it has borrowed from the
latter, or that, as a recent scholar tried to make out, the
Hebrews themselves were originally Aryans, who afterwards
took a Semitic language and preserved their Aryan
habits of thought. I start from the conviction that the
Myth is something universal, that the faculty of forming
it cannot a priori be denied to any race as such, and that
the coincidence of mythical ideas and modes of expression
is the result of the uniformity of the psychological process
which is the foundation of the creation of myths in all
races; and this very uniformity of mythical ideas may
consequently serve to psychologists as an argument for
the thesis of the psychological uniformity of all races.[3]
Where no historical transference of myths can be proved,
says Bastian very justly,[4] the uniformity must be referred
to the organic law of the growth of the mind, which will
everywhere put forth similar products, corresponding and
alike, but variously modified by surrounding influences.
The oldest history of paleography exhibits on the ideographic
and figurative stage the most striking similarities
in the modes of apperception belonging to nations of the
most various races. Lenormant says: Nous pourrions
le cuniforme anarien.[5] The same lesson is taught by
Prehistoric Archeology, the comparative study of which
among the various races would present very instructive
examples. In our museums we see identical implements
used by men of the most various races at the same primitive
stage of civilisation,[6] yet in this case the idea of one
having borrowed from another enters no ones head.
Why should we be surprised at meeting with the very
same phenomenon in Comparative Mythology?
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 48967
Author: Goldziher, Ignác
Release Date: May 15, 2015
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Translator: Martineau, R. It is a story that erases much of the nuance of Jewish religious tradition and warps our understanding of Israel and Palestine. After Gaza, where Jewish texts, history, and language have been deployed to justify mass slaughter and starvation, Beinart argues, Jews must tell a new story. After this war, whose horror will echo for generations, they must do nothing less than offer a new answer to the question: What does it mean to be a Jew?

Beinart imagines an alternate narrative, which would draw on other nations' efforts at moral reconstruction and a different reading of Jewish tradition. This doctrinal position affirms that the Bible is unlike all other books or collections of works in that it is free of error due to having been given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works (2 Tim. 3:16, 17). While no other text can claim this same unique authority, the Book of Enoch is an ancient Jewish religious work, ascribed by tradition to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah, which played a crucial role in forming the worldview of the authors of the New Testament, who were not only familiar with it but quoted it in the New Testament, Epistle of Jude, Jude 1:14 15, and is attributed there to "Enoch the Seventh from Adam" (1 En 60:8). The text was also utilized by the community that originally collected and studied the Dead Sea Scrolls. While some churches today include Enoch as part of the biblical canon (for example the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church), other Christian denominations and scholars accept it only as having historical or theological non-canonical interest and frequently use or assigned it as supplemental materials within academic settings to help students and scholars discover or better understand cultural and historical context of the early Christian Church. The Book of Enoch provides commentators valuable insight into what many ancient Jews and early Christians believed when, God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets (Heb. 1:1). As Dr. Michael S. Heiser in the Introduction to his important book Reversing Hermon so powerfully notes: For those to whom 1 Enoch sounds unfamiliar, this is the ancient apocalyptic literary work known popularly (but imprecisely) as the Book of Enoch. Most scholars believe that 1 Enoch was originally written in Aramaic perhaps as early as the 3rd century B.C. The oldest fragments of the book were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls and dated to roughly the second century B.C. This places the book squarely in the middle of what scholars call the Second Temple Period (ca. 500 B.C. 70 A.D.), an era more commonly referred to as the Intertestamental Period. This book will use the more academic designation ( Second Temple Period ) [...] The Watcher story of 1 Enoch, as many readers will recall, is an expansion of the episode described in Genesis 6:1-4, where the sons of God (Hebrew: beney ha- elohim) came in to the daughters of man (Gen 6:4; ESV). Consequently, Watchers is the Enochian term of choice (among others) for the divine sons of God. While the story of this supernatural rebellion occupies scant space in Genesis, it received considerable attention during the Second Temple Period [...] The Enochian version of the events of Gen 6:1-4 preserves and transmits the original Mesopotamian context for the first four verses of the flood account. Every element of Gen 6:1-4 has a Mesopotamian counterpoint a theological target that provides the rationale for why these four verses wound up in the inspired text in the first place. Connections to that backstory can be found in the Old Testament, but they are scattered and unsystematically presented. This is not the case with Second Temple Jewish literature like 1 Enoch. Books like 1 Enoch preserve all of the Mesopotamian touchpoints with Gen 6:1-4 when presenting their expanded retelling of the events of that biblical passage. The Book of Enoch is therefore intended to be an important supplemental resource for assisting serious researchers and students in the study of the Bible.

Author: Thomas R,Horn
Publisher: Defender Publishing
Published: 09/09/2023
Pages: 130
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.44lbs
Size: 9.00h x 6.00w x 0.31d
ISBN: 9781738600526
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_8b80a6ef-9bcd-421f-b837-256b763c9e57.jpg?v=1759858193
mans-search-for-meaning-gift-edition-9780807060100
Man's Search for Meaning: Gift Edition
The bestselling Holocaust memoir about finding purpose and strength in times of despair--selected as a Library of Congress "10 Most Influential Books in America"

This stunning gift edition of "one of the great books of our time" (Harold S. He sees the magnificence of God and begins to preach to those around him against sin. He warns that the sinners will be winnowed and that God himself will appear on Mount Sinai to judge the humans as well as the fallen angels on Earth. Among the more controversial material within this text is the detailed account it gives of fallen angels on earth and their cursed offspring, the Nephilim. Azazel features heavily as the instigator of metal weapon production, the use of cosmetics and advocate of widespread promiscuity and fornication. In this book, the figure of Enoch is charged with the knowledge of God's chosen and brutal punishment for the Nephilim, their human mothers and their Angel fathers. The Book of Enoch is a pseudoepigraphal work (a work that claims to be by a biblical character). The Book of Enoch was not included in either the Hebrew or most Christian biblical canons, but could have been considered a sacred text by the sectarians. The original Aramaic version was lost until the Dead Sea fragments were discovered. This is a compilation of several separate works, most of which are apocalyptic. Its oldest portion is the "Apocalypse of Weeks," written shortly before the Maccabean uprising of 167 BC against the Seleucids. The Ethiopic Book of Enoch is called a "pseudepigraphical work," meaning one that is not included in any canon of scripture, outside of even the Apocrypha. The only complete extant version is an Ethiopic translation of a previous Greek translation made in Palestine from the original Hebrew or Aramaic. The Book of the Watcher, tells the story of fallen angels from Gen 6:1-4 that took wives, created the Nephilim, and taught advanced technology to mankind, ultimately leading to the great flood and their destruction. The Parables of Similitude, is an apocalyptic book about the Son of Man and the Ancient of Days. These ancient prophecies of Jesus are directly in line with what we find in the Bible, and are remarkably similar to The Book of Revelation. The Book of the Courses of the Heavenly Luminaries is a detailed account of the stars and their functions. The Dream Visions is the prophecy of all human history, from the creation of mankind all the way to the end times and the final judgement. The past, present, and future are foretold in grand detail. The prophecy of weeks is similar to the prophecy structure in the book of Daniel. The Noah Fragments is the untold story of Noah from the Bible. We learn more about his mission to save all humanity and the struggles of his father Lamech and his grandfather Methuselah. Finally, included herein are all known fragments of The Book of Giants. Each work is independent, but all the works are bound by a common theme: the punishment of the wicked and the blessedness of the righteous.

Author: Enoch
Publisher: A.R. Reading the Old Testament is not enough, writes Matthias Henze in this slender volume aimed at the student of the Bible. To understand the Jews of the Second Temple period, it's essential to read what they wrote-and what Jesus and his followers might have read-beyond the Hebrew scriptures. Henze introduces the four-century gap between the Old and New Testaments and some of the writings produced during this period (different Old Testaments, the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha, the Dead Sea Scrolls); discusses how these texts have been read from the Reformation to the present, emphasizing the importance of the discovery of Qumran; guides the student's encounter with select texts from each collection; and then introduces key ideas found in specific New Testament texts that simply can't be understood without these early Jewish "intertestamental" writings-the Messiah, angels and demons, the law, and the resurrection of the dead. Finally, he discusses the role of these writings in the "parting of the ways" between Judaism and Christianity. Mind the Gap broadens curious students' perspectives on early Judaism and early Christianity and welcomes them to deeper study.

Author: Matthais Henze
Publisher: Augsburg Fortress Publishing
Published: 08/01/2017
Pages: 242
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.80lbs
Size: 8.40h x 5.40w x 0.70d
ISBN: 9781506406428
Audience: Young Adult

This title is not returnable
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_34808274-59fa-44d0-bfe8-afead5c9a7c8.jpg?v=1759919738
the-book-of-enoch-9781602065680
The Book of Enoch
The early Christian Fathers and the Essenes of Qumran respected 'The Book of Enoch' but by the 4th century AD the text was deemed heretical and all extant copies were destroyed. Was there really a forced exile in the first century, at the hands of the Romans? Should we regard the Jewish people, throughout two millennia, as both a distinct ethnic group and a putative nation--returned at last to its Biblical homeland?

Shlomo Sand argues that most Jews actually descend from converts, whose native lands were scattered far across the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The formation of a Jewish people and then a Jewish nation out of these disparate groups could only take place under the sway of a new historiography, developing in response to the rise of nationalism throughout Europe. Beneath the biblical back fill of the nineteenth-century historians, and the twentieth-century intellectuals who replaced rabbis as the architects of Jewish identity, The Invention of the Jewish People uncovers a new narrative of Israel's formation, and proposes a bold analysis of nationalism that accounts for the old myths.

After a long stay on Israel's bestseller list, and winning the coveted Aujourd'hui Award in France, The Invention of the Jewish People is finally available in English. The central importance of the conflict in the Middle East ensures that Sand's arguments will reverberate well beyond the historians and politicians that he takes to task. Without an adequate understanding of Israel's past, capable of superseding today's opposing views, diplomatic solutions are likely to remain elusive. In this iconoclastic work of history, Shlomo Sand provides the intellectual foundations for a new vision of Israel's future.

Author: Shlomo Sand
Publisher: Verso
Published: 08/04/2020
Pages: 368
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.75lbs
Size: 8.20h x 5.50w x 0.90d
ISBN: 9781788736619

About the Author
Shlomo Sand studied history at the University of Tel Aviv and at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales, in Paris. She paints a richly textured and sometimes troubling portrait of the period, exploring how southern Jews have been targets of antisemitism and violence but also complicit in racial injustice. Rabin considers Jewish immigration and institution building, participation in the Civil War, the 1915 lynching of Leo Frank, and Jewish support for and resistance to the modern fight for Black civil rights. At a time of worldwide crisis, venerable answers to this question have become unsettled. In To Be a Jew Today, the legal scholar and columnist Noah Feldman draws on a lifelong engagement with his religion to offer a wide-ranging interpretation of Judaism in its current varieties. How do Jews today understand their relationship to God, to Israel, and to each other--and live their lives accordingly?

Writing sympathetically but incisively about diverse outlooks, Feldman clarifies what's at stake in the choice of how to be a Jew, and discusses the shared "theology of struggle" that Jews engage in as they wrestle with who God is, what God wants, or whether God exists. He shows how the founding of Israel has transformed Judaism itself over the last century--and explores the ongoing consequences of that transformation for all Jews, who find the meaning of their Jewishness and their views about Israel intertwined, no matter what those views are. And he examines the analogies between being Jewish and belonging to a large, messy family--a family that often makes its members crazy, but a family all the same. Written with learning, empathy and clarity, To Be a Jew Today is a critical resource for readers of all faiths.

Author: Noah Feldman
Publisher: Picador USA
Published: 03/04/2025
Pages: 416
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.75lbs
Size: 8.40h x 5.50w x 1.20d
ISBN: 9781250371904

About the Author
Noah Feldman is the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law and chair of the Society of Fellows at Harvard University, where he is also the founding director of the Julis-Rabinowitz Program on Jewish and Israeli Law. From a spectrum of disciplines, state-of-the-art archeological breakthroughs, and fresh discoveries within scripture, he brings real evidence of a historical basis for the exodus -- the history behind the story. The biblical account of millions fleeing Egypt may be an exaggeration, but the exodus itself is not a myth.

Friedman does not stop there. Known for his ability to make Bible scholarship accessible to readers, Friedman proceeds to reveal how much is at stake when we explore the historicity of the exodus. The implications, he writes, are monumental. We learn that it became the starting-point of the formation of monotheism, the defining concept of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Bergsma reveals how this Jewish sect directly influenced the beliefs, sacraments, and practices of early Christianity and offers new information on how Christians lived their lives, worshipped, and eventually went on to influence the Roman Empire and Western civilization. Looking to Hebrew scripture and Jewish tradition, Bergsma helps to further explain how a simple Jewish peasant could go on to inspire a religion and a philosophy that still resonates 2,000 years later.

In this enriching and exciting exploration, Bergsma demonstrates how the Dead Sea Scrolls--the world's greatest modern archaeological discovery--can shed light on the Church as a sacred society that offered hope, redemption, and salvation to its member. But women have played a role in Jewish religious leadership from the days of the Bible and even before. Miriam the Prophetess and Deborah the Judge are just the two most prominent of these women, most of whose names are lost to history. The Hebrew Priestess tells the stories of these women, often reading between the lines of the Bible and Talmud to rediscover the women that rabbinic editors tried to erase. The authors bring a unique vantage point: They are founders of the Kohenet Institute, which trains Jewish women as religious leaders - as Hebrew priestesses. They believe the spiritual gifts of Jewish women cannot be incorporated into Judaism unless women explore the Divine through their own lens. The Kohenet Institute offers an embodied, ecstatic earth-based approach to Jewish spiritual practice and leadership. The Hebrew Priestess weaves together a careful examination of historical antecedents of these new priestesses, along with the personal experiences of women who embarked on this new path of Jewish priestesshood. The Hebrew Priestess delineates 13 models of spiritual leadership - among them prophetess, weaver, drummer, shrinekeeper, midwife, mother, maiden, witch, and fool - and shows how each model was manifest in ancient times, its continuation through Jewish history, and how women in our day are following that path. Finally, it shows how you can incorporate part of that path into your own life. Ambitious, erudite, practical, and deeply personal, the Hebrew Priestsess offers a deep connection to Jewish history and to profound holy experiences today. "A very readable and much-needed book!" --Starhawk "An extraordinary and amazing work." -Alicia Ostriker "A book to savor." --Max Dashu "The articulation of my dreams and longings." -Rabbi Shefa Gold "Read this book, but don't stop there-live it as well!" -Rabbi Rami Shapiro

Author: Jill Hammer,Taya Shere
Publisher: Ben Yehuda Press
Published: 07/28/2015
Pages: 328
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 1.06lbs
Size: 9.00h x 6.00w x 0.73d
ISBN: 9781934730461
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_6c0e5663-c11f-427c-a70a-bffe7098d0be.jpg?v=1760032139
the-newish-jewish-encyclopedia-from-abraham-to-zabars-and-everything-in-between-9781579658939
The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia: From Abraham to Zabar's and Everything in Between
Named one of Library Journal's Best Religion & Spirituality Books of the Year

An Unorthodox Guide to Everything Jewish

Deeply knowing, highly entertaining, and just a little bit irreverent, this unputdownable encyclopedia of all things Jewish and Jew-ish covers culture, religion, history, habits, language, and more.

Julius describes Abraham's life as two separate lives, and as a version of the collective life of the Jewish people.

Abraham's first life is an early adulthood of questioning the polytheism of his home city of Ur Kasdim until its ruler, Nimrod, condemns him to death and he is rescued, he believes, by a miracle. In his second life, Abraham's focus is no longer on critique but rather on conversion and on his leadership over his growing household, until God's command that he sacrifice his son Isaac. This test, the Akedah (or "Binding"), ends with another miracle, as he believes, but as Julius argues, it is also a catastrophe for Abraham. The Akedah represents for him an unsurpassed horizon--and in Jewish life thereafter.
