That does not mean that
his head was in the clouds, or that the particular sciences lacked
interest for him. Not at allhe felt a lively concern for
theological debate, he was a mathematician of the first rank, he made
original contributions to physics, he gave a realistic attention to moral
psychology. But he was incapable of looking at the objects of any special
enquiry without seeing them as aspects or parts of one intelligible
universe. He strove constantly after system, and the instrument on which
his effort relied was the speculative reason. He embodied in an extreme
form the spirit of his age. Nothing could be less like the spirit of
ours. To many people now alive metaphysics means a body of wild and
meaningless assertions resting on spurious argument. A professor of
metaphysics may nowadays be held to deal handsomely with the duties of
his chair if he is prepared to handle metaphysical statements at all,
though it be only for the purpose of getting rid of them, by showing them
up as confused forms of something else. Judging, however, that it is now more than ever improbable
that I shall myself be able to detect any errors in my reasoning, I feel
that it is time to present the latter to the contemplation of other
minds; and in doing so, I make this explanation only because I feel it
desirable to state at the outset that the present treatise was written
before the publication of Mr. Mill's treatise on the same subject. It is
desirable to make this statement, first, because in several instances the
trains of reasoning in the two essays are parallel, and next, because in
other instances I have quoted passages from Mr. Mill's essay in
connections which would be scarcely intelligible were it not understood
that these passages are insertions made after the present essay had been
completed. I have also added several supplementary essays which have been
written since the main essay was finished.
It is desirable further to observe, that the only reason why I publish
this edition anonymously is because I feel very strongly that, in matters
of the kind with which the present essay deals, opinions and arguments
should be allowed to produce the exact degree of influence to which as
opinions and arguments they are entitled: they should be permitted to
stand upon their own intrinsic merits alone, and quite beyond the shadow
of that unfair prejudication which cannot but arise so soon as their
author's authority, or absence of authority, becomes known.
Notwithstanding this avowal, however, I fear that many who glance over
the following pages will read in the "Physicus" of the first one a very
different motive. There is at the present time a wonderfully wide-spread
sentiment pervading all classes of societya sentiment which it
would not be easy to define, but the practical outcome of which is, that
to discuss the question of which this essay treats is, in some way or
other, morally wrong. Many, therefore, who share this sentiment will
doubtless attribute my reticence to a puerile fear on my part to meet it.
I can only say that such is not the case. Although I allude to this
sentiment with all respectbelieving as I do that it is an offshoot
from the stock which contains all that is best and greatest in human
naturenevertheless it seems to me impossible to deny that the
sentiment in question is as unreasonable as the frame of mind which
harbours it must be unreasoning. If there is no God, where can be the
harm in our examining the spurious evidence of his existence? If there is
a God, surely our first duty towards him must be to exert to our utmost,
in our attempts to find him, the most noble faculty with which he has
endowed usas carefully to investigate the evidence which he has
seen fit to furnish of his own existence as we investigate the evidence
of inferior things in his dependent creation. To say that there is one
rule or method for ascertaining truth in the latter case, which it is not
legitimate to apply in the former case, is merely a covert way of saying
that the Deity, if he exists, has not supplied us with rational evidence
of his existence. For my own part, I feel that such an assertion cannot
but embody far more unworthy conceptions of a Personal God than are
represented by any amount of earnest inquiry into whatever evidence of
his existence there may be present; but, neglecting this reflection, if
there is a God, it is certain that reason is the faculty by which he has
enabled man to discover truth, and it is no less certain that the
scientific methods have proved themselves by far the most trustworthy for
reason to adopt. To my mind, therefore, it is impossible to resist the
conclusion that, looking to this undoubted pre-eminence of the scientific
methods as ways to truth, whether or not there is a God, the question as
to his existence is both more morally and more reverently contemplated if
we regard it purely as a problem for methodical analysis to solve, than
if we regard it in any other light. Or, stating the case in other words,
I believe that in whatever degree we intentionally abstain from using in
this case what we know to be the most trustworthy methods of
inquiry in other cases, in that degree are we either unworthily closing
our eyes to a dreaded truth, or we are guilty of the worst among human
sins"Depart from us, for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways."
If it is said that, supposing man to be in a state of probation, faith,
and not reason, must be the instrument of his trial, I am ready to admit
the validity of the remark; but I must also ask it to be remembered, that
unless faith has some basis of reason whereon to rest, it differs
in nothing from superstition; and hence that it is still our duty to
investigate the rational standing of the question before us by the
scientific methods alone. And I may here observe parenthetically,
that the same reasoning applies to all investigations concerning the
reality of a supposed revelation. With such investigations, however, the
present essay has nothing to do, although, I may remark that if there is
any evidence of a Divine Mind discernible in the structure of a
professing revelation, such evidence, in whatever degree present, would
be of the best possible kind for substantiating the hypothesis of
 Theism.
Such being, then, what I conceive the only reasonable, as well as the
most truly moral, way of regarding the question to be discussed in the
following pages, even if the conclusions yielded by this discussion were
more negative than they are, I should deem it culpable cowardice in me
for this reason to publish anonymously. For even if an inquiry of
the present kind could ever result in a final demonstration of Atheism,
there might be much for its author to regret, but nothing for him to be
ashamed of; and, by parity of reasoning, in whatever degree the result of
such an inquiry is seen to have a tendency to negative the theistic
theory, the author should not be ashamed candidly to acknowledge his
conviction as to the degree of such tendency, provided only that his
conviction is an honest one, and that he is conscious of its
having been reached by using his faculties with the utmost care of which
 he is capable.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 19003
Author: Romanes, George John
Release Date: Aug 7, 2006
Format: eBook
Language: English

The Basis of Early Christian Theism

A question which every author ought to ask of himself before he sends
forth his work, and one which must occur to every thoughtful reader, is
the inquiry, Cui bono?what justification has one for treating the
subject at all, and why in the particular way which he has chosen? To
the pertinency of this question to the present treatise the author has
been deeply sensible, and therefore cannot forbear a few prefatory words
of explanation of his object and method.
In accounts of the theistic argument, as in the history of philosophy in
general, it has been customary to pass over a space of well-nigh ten
centuries of the Christian era in silence, or with such scanty and
unsympathetic notice as to make silence the better alternative. Largely
through the influence of such treatment as this, we moderns have almost
forgotten at times that during this period there lived men inferior to
none in history in endowments of mind and influence on succeeding
generations, and that there then took place some of the most significant
and far-reaching intellectual conflicts in the history of thought. "With
Cicero," says Professor Stirling, "we reached in our course a most
important and critical halting-place.... We have still ... to wait those
thousand years yet before Anselm shall arrive with what is to be named
the new proof, the proof ontological, and during the entire interval it
is the Fathers of the Church and their immediate followers who, in
repetition of the old, or suggestion of the new, connect thinker[Pg 10] with
thinker, philosopher with philosopher, pagan with Christian."[1] To
attempt to account for even one of the details of thought during this
period cannot be without its advantages.
For Christianity gave a new and unique turn to thought. It brought with
it a new set of data, and a new subject-matter. The Christian doctrine
of God, the distinctions in the Trinity, the great doctrines centering
around the person of Jesus Christ, though, perhaps, faintly foreshadowed
in some of the earlier speculations, are, in their fulness and
completeness, first given to the world by the Founder of Christianity.
The claims made for these doctrines, too, gave them a unique character.
In contrast with the half-hearted, faltering conclusions of the
prevalent philosophical schools, Christianity asserted that its
teachings were absolute truth; it claimed to be nothing less than a
revelation from the Creator of the world. It will be readily seen that
the introduction of such a system as this into the Greek world would be
attended with important results, not only in its effects upon the
intellectual life of the times, but also in the influence of the current
philosophical conceptions on the statement of its doctrine. The
significance of this early period lies in the fact that, in the
positive, definite system of Christianity, systematic thought, which was
fast becoming disorganized and sceptical, found a center about which it
might rally and focus itself, and the scattered fragments of philosophy
were all collected together, by either friends or foes, about the new
religion. The new point of view and the new relations would be most
significant, too, in that department of thought with which the contact
of this new central system had most to do, and thus the treatment of the
theistic problem exhibits in a special degree the alteration in the
[Pg 11]standpoint and method of philosophy. It threw into bold relief the old
basis of belief in the divine, and aroused a comparison and discussion
of the validity of the various arguments hitherto used by speculative
thought, and set them over in sharp contrast to the claims of the new
revelation. In the early period when this contrast was most clearly
felt, and time had not yet permitted a complete fusion and blending of
the two points of view, we find a simplicity of situation which will aid
analysis and facilitate the study of the relation of the old arguments
for the existence of a God to the Christian doctrine, and which will
help in determining the elements due to each and in interpreting the
reasons for the direction of thought on this subject, which
characterized the whole of the Medival period.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 24328
Author: Cole, Lawrence Thomas
Release Date: Jan 16, 2008
Format: eBook
Language: English

Theism or Atheism: The Great Alternative

Shrouded in the cloak of philosophy, the question of the existence of
God continues to attract attention, and, I may add, to command more
respect than it deserves. For it is only by a subterfuge that it assumes
the rank of philosophy. "God" enters into philosophy only when it is
beginning to lose caste in its proper home, and then in its new
environment it undergoes such a transformation as to contain very little
likeness to its former, and proper, self. It disowns its parentage and
claims another origin, and, like so many genealogists devising pedigrees
for the parvenu, certain philosophers attempt to map out for the
newcomer an ancestry to which he can establish no valid claim. Nothing
would, indeed, surprise the ancestor more than to be brought face to
face with his descendant. He would not be more astonished than would the
ancient Eohippus on meeting with a modern dray-horse. In anthropology or
history the idea of God may fairly claim a place, but it has no place in
philosophy on any sensible meaning of the word.
The consequence of this transference of the idea of God to the sphere of
philosophy is the curious position that the God in which people believe
is not the God whose existence is made the product of an argument, and
the God of the argument is not the God of belief. The theory and the
fact have no more likeness to each other than a chestnut horse has to a
horse-chestnut. A fallacy is perpetuated by appealing to a fact, but the
fact immediately discredits the fallacy by disowning it in practice. The
grounds upon which the belief in God is supposed to rest, the reasoning
from which it springs, are seen to follow the belief instead of
preceding it. The roots are in the air, and on closer[Pg vii] inspection are
seen to be artificial adornments, so many imitations that have been hung
there for the purpose of imposing on near-sighted or careless observers.
The purpose of the following pages is to make clear the nature of this
alliance and to expose the real character of what we are asked to
worship. There are, of course, many on whose ears any amount of
reasoning will fall without effect. To that class this book will not
appeal; it may be questioned whether many will even read it. They will
go on professing the belief they have always professed, and taking pride
in the fact that they have an intellect which is superior to proof, and
which disdains evidence when it runs contrary to "my belief." Others
will, I expect, complain that the treatment of so solemn a subject is
not "reverent" enough. But why any subject should be treated
reverently, as a condition of examination, is more than I have ever been
able to discover. It is asking the inquirer to commence his
investigation with a half-promise to find something good in what he is
about to examine. Whether a thing is worthy of reverence or not is a
conclusion that must follow investigation, not precede it. The first part,
"The Mystery of Evil," written soon after "The Idea of God," was
designed to supply some considerations which for the sake of conciseness
had been omitted from that book. Its close kinship with the second part,
"The Cosmic Roots of Love and Self-Sacrifice," will be at once apparent
to the reader.
That second part is, with a few slight changes, the Phi Beta Kappa
oration delivered by me at Harvard University, in June, 1895. Its
original title was "Ethics in the Cosmic Process," and its form of
statement was partly determined by the fact that it was intended as a
reply to[Pg vi] Huxley's famous Romanes lecture delivered at the University of
Oxford in 1893. Readers of "The Destiny of Man" will observe that I have
here repeated a portion of the argument of that book. The detection of
the part played by the lengthening of infancy in the genesis of the
human race is my own especial contribution to the Doctrine of Evolution,
so that I naturally feel somewhat uncertain as to how far that subject
is generally understood, and how far a brief allusion to it will
suffice. It therefore seemed best to recapitulate the argument while
indicating its bearing upon the ethics of the Cosmic Process.
I can never cease to regret that Huxley should have passed away without
seeing my argument and giving me the benefit of his comments. The
subject is one of a kind which we loved to discuss on quiet Sunday
evenings at his fireside in London, many years ago. I have observed on
Huxley's part, not only in the Romanes lecture, but also in the charming
"Prolegomena,"[Pg vii] written in 1894, a tendency to use the phrase "cosmic
process" in a restricted sense as equivalent to "natural selection;" and
doubtless if due allowance were made for that circumstance, the
appearance of antagonism between us would be greatly diminished. In our
many talks, however, I always felt that, along with abundant general
sympathy, there was a discernible difference in mental attitude. Upon
the proposition that "the foundation of morality is to ... give up
pretending to believe that for which there is no evidence," we were
heartily agreed. It was because the doctrines of the Hamiltonian
School were believed to be dangerous errors, which this process
of thought exposes, that it was undertaken.
Logically, and in the final analysis, there can be but two
systems of philosophical theology in the world. The one
will be Pantheism, or Atheism, both of which contain
the same essential principle, but viewed from different standpoints, the
other will be a pure Theism. In the schools
of Brahma and Buddh, or in the schools of Christ, the truth
is to be found. And this is so because every teacher is to be
held responsible for all which can be logically deduced from
his system; and every erroneous result which can be so
deduced is decisive of the presence of an error in principle
in the foundation; and all schemes of philosophy, by such a
trial, are seen to be based on one of these two classes of
schools. Just here a quotation from Dr. Laurens Hickok's
"Rational Psychology" will be in point:
"Except as we determine the absolute to be personality
wholly out of and beyond all the conditions and modes of
space and time, we can by no possibility leave nature for the
supernatural. The clear-sighted and honest intellect, resting
in this conclusion that the conditions of space and time[vi]
cannot be transcended, will be Atheistic; while the deluded
intellect, which has put the false play of the discursive understanding
in its abstract speculations for the decisions of an
all-embracing reason, and deems itself so fortunate as to have
found a deity within the modes of space and time, will be
Pantheistic. The Pantheism will be ideal and transcendent,
when it reaches its conclusions by a logical process in the
abstract law of thought; and it will be material and empiric,
when it concludes from the fixed connections of cause and
effect in the generalized law of nature; but in neither case
is the Pantheism any other than Atheism, for the Deity,
circumscribed in the conditions of space and time with nature,
is but nature still, and, whether in abstract thought or generalized
reality, is no God."
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 37864
Author: Jones, Jesse Henry
Release Date: Oct 27, 2011
Format: eBook
Language: English

Theism; being the Baird Lecture of 1876

The Lectures in this volume have been delivered
in Glasgow, St Andrews, and Edinburgh,
in connection with the Lectureship
founded by the late Mr James Baird of
Auchmedden and Cambusdoon. The transition
has been rapid from negative criticism of the Christian
religion to direct assault upon the very foundation
of all religionthe personality and providence of God.
Distrust of a supernatural revelation, and denial of all
authority to the teaching of the sacred Scriptures, has
been succeeded by doubt of the existence of God in the
proper import of that sacred name. The Theistic postulate
is degraded to the rank of a mere hypothesis, which is
pronounced inadequate to explain the universe. A "law-governed
Cosmos, full of life and reason," eternal and in[Pg 5]finite,
must now take the place of a personal God, the
Creator and Ruler of the universe. This is the "New
Faith" which is to supersede the Old.
The question, "Are we still Christians?" has received
a final answer in the words of Strauss: "If we would
speak as honest, upright men, we must acknowledge we
are no longer Christians."[1] And in giving this answer he
is confident he speaks in the name of a large and rapidly
increasing number of men who once believed in the truth
of Christianity"The We I mean no longer counts only
by thousands."[2] The further question, "Have we still a
Religion?" (understanding by religion "the recognition
and veneration of God, and the belief in a future life")
is also answered in the negative. Religion "is a delusion,
to abolish which ought to be the endeavor of every man
whose eyes are open to the truth."[3] The only question
which now remains for the speculative intellect is, "What
is our conception of the Universe?"the conception
which henceforth must take the place of a personal God.
The answer of Strauss is explicit, and in his estimation
final: "The conception of the Cosmos, instead of that of
a personal God as the finality to which we are led by
perception and thought, or as the ultimate fact beyond
which we can not proceed, ... assumes the more definite
shape of matter infinitely agitated, which, by differentiation
and integration, develops itself to ever higher forms[Pg 6]
and functions, and describes an everlasting circle by evolution,
dissolution, and then fresh evolution."[4]
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 46544
Author: Cocker, B. No such reproduction
would have been either expedient or
possible. The lectures were not read: they
were spoken (with the aid of brief notes) in
such terms as suggested themselves at the
moment; and their duration was rigidly
fixed, to suit my academic audience, so as
just to occupy the customary hour. Although,
therefore, they were largely (though
not wholly) based upon written drafts, none
of the language, and not all the ideas and
illustrations contained in the original could
be reproduced in the spoken lectures, nor
did everything in the spoken lectures represent
passages in the written originals.
It is not, in these circumstances, surprisingviii
that the work has had, in large measure, to
be rewritten, though the argument itself, and
the order in which its various parts are presented
for consideration, remains substantially
unchanged.
I should not have troubled the reader with
this very unimportant narrative except for
the purpose of explaining the long interval
that has elapsed between the delivery of the
lectures and their publication. Literary composition
I have always found laborious and
slow, even in favourable conditions. But the
conditions have not been favourable. My
anxiety to make the argument easy to read
for persons who take little interest in, and
have small knowledge of, philosophical controversies
did not make it easy to write;
while external circumstances were singularly
unfavourable to rapid composition. No one
who took any part in public affairs between
March 1914 and the outbreak of the war, or
between the outbreak of the war and the
present moment, is likely to regard these
months as providing convenient occasion for
quiet thought and careful writing.
