I used to read it without knowing the secret of the pleasure I
found in it, but as I grow older I begin to detect some of the simple
expedients of this natural magic. Open the book where you will, it takes
you out of doors. In our broiling July weather one can walk out with this
genially garrulous Fellow of Oriel and find refreshment instead of
fatigue. You have no trouble in keeping abreast of him as he ambles along
on his hobby-horse, now pointing to a pretty view, now stopping to watch
the motions of a bird or an insect, or to bag a specimen for the Honorable
Daines Barrington or Mr. Pennant. In simplicity of taste and natural
refinement he reminds one of Walton; in tenderness toward what he would
have called the brute creation, of Cowper. I do not know whether his
descriptions of scenery are good or not, but they have made me familiar
with his neighborhood. Since I first read him, I have walked over some of
his favorite haunts, but I still see them through his eyes rather than by
any recollection of actual and personal vision. The book has also the
delightfulness of absolute leisure. Mr. White seems never to have had any
harder work to do than to study the habits of his feathered
fellow-townsfolk, or to watch the ripening of his peaches on the wall. His
volumes are the journal of Adam in Paradise,

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 880
Author: Lowell, James Russell
Release Date: Apr 1, 1997
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/880_eec08d65-316d-483f-97fd-404dd3244e35.jpg?v=1671248991
warum-wir-sterben-gb-24618

It was a kind of Encyclical from
the reigning pontiff of science, and since that potentate changed every
year there was some uncertainty as to his subject and its treatment, and
there was this further piquant attraction, wanting in other and
better-known Encyclicals, that the address of one year might not merely
contradict but might even exhibit a lofty contempt for that or for those
which had immediately preceded it.
During the three years immediately preceding the war we had excellent
examples of all these things. Its arguments were
mostly based upon what even to the tyro in chemistry seemed to be rather
shaky foundations. From the foundational deities of ancient Egypt to the reactions of squeamish children today, it is a historically commonplace belief that snakes are devious, dangerous, and even evil. But where there is hatred and fear, there is also fascination and reverence. How is it that creatures so despised and sinister, so foreign of movement and ostensibly devoid of sociality and emotion, have fired the imaginations of poets, prophets, and painters across time and cultures?

In Slither, Stephen S. In doing so, he explores not only what neurologically triggers our wary fascination with these limbless creatures, but also how the current generation of snake scientists is using cutting-edge technologies to discover new truths about these evolutionarily ancient creatures--truths that may ultimately affect and enhance human health.

Author: Stephen S. Want to know what would happen if you rode a helicopter blade, built a billion-story building, made a lava lamp out of lava, or jumped on a geyser as it erupted? Okay, if you insist.

Before you go on a cosmic road trip, feed the residents of New York City to a T. rex, or fill every church with bananas, be sure to consult this practical guide for impractical ideas. While it's clear that women and girls are vital voices and agents of change for this planet, they are too often missing from the proverbial table. More than a problem of bias, it's a dynamic that sets us up for failure. To change everything, we need everyone.

All We Can Save illuminates the expertise and insights of dozens of diverse women leading on climate in the United States--scientists, journalists, farmers, lawyers, teachers, activists, innovators, wonks, and designers, across generations, geographies, and race--and aims to advance a more representative, nuanced, and solution-oriented public conversation on the climate crisis. These women offer a spectrum of ideas and insights for how we can rapidly, radically reshape society.

Intermixing essays with poetry and art, this book is both a balm and a guide for knowing and holding what has been done to the world, while bolstering our resolve never to give up on one another or our collective future. Curated by two climate leaders, this collection is a celebration of visionaries who are leading us on a path toward all we can save.

With essays and poems by:

Emily Atkin - Xiye Bastida - Ellen Bass - Colette Pichon Battle - Jainey K. From Alaska to Honduras, Lyons's stories are braided with careful observation, scientific research, and wonder to foster the connection between us and our nonhuman neighbors. By focusing on the Anthropocene--the era during which human activities have had substantial impacts on the functioning of our planet--Lyons highlights the need to protect the planet's quickly diminishing diversity.

Each essay within Entwined seeks to keep nonhuman stories in the foreground, with Lyons's personal experiences acting as a backdrop. Some of these moments include navigating icebergs in Alaska while researching the nesting strategies of common eiders, witnessing the apparent demise of a humpback whale on the Baja Peninsula while instructing a wilderness course, and observing ibex while trail running the Alps.

While each piece can stand on its own as a literary examination of a creature's life and a facet of the human experience, collectively, the narrative invites readers to consider what they have in common with even the most seemingly foreign of species, such as sea stars and sponges. Entwined rests on the belief that when we take the time to know unfamiliar creatures, we are more likely to alter our choices and behaviors in ways that ensure their continued existence on the planet.

Author: Bridget A. The book serves as an extended field guide and natural history reference for residents of the region and those visiting and exploring the Sierra. Through her writing, the author shares personal narratives and information gleaned from experts in the field, including biologists, ornithologists, and foresters. Each of the book's twenty-one essays begins with a detailed black-and-white drawing by illustrator Anne Chadwick that provides a backdrop for the vignettes that follow.

Quesnel embraces the notion that to simply walk in one's neighborhood is to familiarize oneself with the local flora and fauna, drawing attention to everyday things too often neglected. She argues that we can be complacent with what surrounds us, but with careful observation and research, we become acutely aware--and in awe of--nature's everyday activities. The black bear's hibernation techniques and mountain chickadee's caching methods reveal just two of nature's wily ways. Quesnel chases other curiosities as well, asking, "How does a spider create an orb web?" or, "How does a boulder the size of a small car end up alone in the woods?" In the introduction, she writes, "It is this 'un-peeling' of layers in nature that opens up our world."

For anyone interested in nature writing, whether an armchair explorer, outdoor enthusiast, or science aficionado, Snow Fleas and Chickadees provides an entertaining and engaging discovery of the picturesque Sierra Nevada.

Author: Eve Quesnel
Publisher: University of Nevada Press
Published: 05/20/2025
Pages: 160
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 0.60lbs
Size: 7.10h x 5.20w x 0.80d
ISBN: 9781647791896

About the Author
Eve Quesnel has written articles centered on her observations through a storytelling and educational approach for more than two decades. She challenges conventional fixes for our problems, highlighting the need to tackle issues at multiple levels, understand interdependence, and embrace ambiguity. Insisting on our collective responsibility to confront the looming threats to humanity' s survival, she advocates change through interconnectedness and challenges us to rethink our perspectives on relationships, community, and the very essence of being human. A blend of intellectual inquiry, essays, emotional engagement, storytelling, poetry and graphic art, 'Combining' is an invitation to nurture genuine connections and navigate a world brimming with " Warm Data" - the interrelationships that integrate elements of every complex system. The book calls on us to shed our linear thinking and embrace " Aphanipoiesis" - the unseen ways in which life comes together to foster vitality and propel evolution. In 'Combining', love, humor, curiosity, and vulnerability entwine amidst the trials of a world in flux. As we face the Polycrisis, Nora Bateson urges us to swerve from the traditional paths and to dismantle the illusions of fitting in.
