Green and thick and sappy
to the touch, they felt like summer, soft and elastic, as if full
of life, mere rushes though they were. On the fingers they
left a green scent; rushes have a separate scent of green, so,
too, have ferns, very different from that of grass or
leaves. Rising from brown sheaths, the tall stems enlarged
a little in the middle, like classical columns, and heavy with
their sap and freshness, leaned against the hawthorn
sprays. From the earth they had drawn its moisture, and
made the ditch dry; some of the sweetness of the air had entered
into their fibres, and the rushesthe common
rusheswere full of beautiful summer. The white
pollen of early grasses growing on the edge was dusted from them
each time the hawthorn boughs were shaken by a thrush.
These lower sprays came down in among the grass, and leaves and
grass-blades touched. Smooth round stems of angelica, big
as a gun-barrel, hollow and strong, stood on the slope of the
mound, their tiers of well-balanced branches rising like those of
a tree. Such a sturdy growth pushed back the ranks of hedge
parsley in full white flower, which blocked every avenue and
winding birds-path of the bank. But the
gix, or wild parsnip, reached already high above
both, and would rear its fluted stalk, joint on joint, till it
could face a man. Trees they were to the lesser birds, not
even bending if perched on; but though so stout, the birds did
not place their nests on or against them. Something in the
odour of these umbelliferous plants, perhaps, is not quite liked;
if brushed or bruised they give out a bitter greenish
scent. Under their cover, well shaded and hidden, birds
build, but not against or on the stems, though they will affix
their nests to much less certain supports. With the grasses
that overhung the edge, with the rushes in the ditch itself, and
these great plants on the mound, the whole hedge was wrapped and
thickened. No cunning of glance could see through it; it
would have needed a ladder to help any one look over.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 414
Author: Jefferies, Richard
Release Date: Jan 1, 1996
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/414_84370c7d-2f8f-477d-9121-305581872c6f.jpg?v=1671248048
glaucus-or-the-wonders-of-the-shore-gb-695
Glaucus Or, The Wonders of the Shore

Glaucus; Or, The Wonders of the Shore

I cannot forego the pleasure of
dedicating this little book to you; excepting of course the
opening exhortation (needless enough in your case) to those who
have not yet discovered the value of Natural History.
Accept it as a memorial of pleasant hours spent by us already,
and as an earnest, I trust, of pleasant hours to be spent
hereafter (perhaps, too, beyond this life in the nobler world to
come), in examining together the works of our Father in
heaven.
1. I used to read it without knowing the secret of the pleasure I
found in it, but as I grow older I begin to detect some of the simple
expedients of this natural magic. Open the book where you will, it takes
you out of doors. In our broiling July weather one can walk out with this
genially garrulous Fellow of Oriel and find refreshment instead of
fatigue. You have no trouble in keeping abreast of him as he ambles along
on his hobby-horse, now pointing to a pretty view, now stopping to watch
the motions of a bird or an insect, or to bag a specimen for the Honorable
Daines Barrington or Mr. Pennant. In simplicity of taste and natural
refinement he reminds one of Walton; in tenderness toward what he would
have called the brute creation, of Cowper. I do not know whether his
descriptions of scenery are good or not, but they have made me familiar
with his neighborhood. Since I first read him, I have walked over some of
his favorite haunts, but I still see them through his eyes rather than by
any recollection of actual and personal vision. The book has also the
delightfulness of absolute leisure. Mr. White seems never to have had any
harder work to do than to study the habits of his feathered
fellow-townsfolk, or to watch the ripening of his peaches on the wall. As I feel that the opportunities which I enjoyed
of studying the Natural History of the different countries we visited,
have been wholly due to Captain Fitz Roy, I hope I may here be permitted
to repeat my expression of gratitude to him; and to add that, during the
five years we were together, I received from him the most cordial
friendship and steady assistance. Both to Captain Fitz Roy and to all the
Officers of the Beagle 10 I shall ever feel most thankful
for the undeviating kindness with which I was treated during our long
      voyage.

This volume contains, in the form of a Journal, a history of our voyage,
and a sketch of those observations in Natural History and Geology, which I
think will possess some interest for the general reader. I have in this
edition largely condensed and corrected some parts, and have added a
little to others, in order to render the volume more fitted for popular
reading; but I trust that naturalists will remember, that they must refer
for details to the larger publications which comprise the scientific
results of the Expedition. The Zoology of the Voyage of the Beagle
includes an account of the Fossil Mammalia, by Professor Owen; of the
Living Mammalia, by Mr. Waterhouse; of the Birds, by Mr. Gould; of the
Fish, by the Rev. L. Jenyns; and of the Reptiles, by Mr. Bell. I have
appended to the descriptions of each species an account of its habits and
range. These works, which I owe to the high talents and disinterested zeal
of the above distinguished authors, could not have been undertaken, had it
not been for the liberality of the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's
Treasury, who, through the representation of the Right Honourable the
Chancellor of the Exchequer, have been pleased to grant a sum of one
thousand pounds towards defraying part of the expenses of publication.

I have myself published separate volumes on the 'Structure and
Distribution of Coral Reefs;' on the 'Volcanic Islands visited during the
Voyage of the Beagle;' and on the 'Geology of South America.' The sixth
volume of the 'Geological Transactions' contains two papers of mine on the
Erratic Boulders and Volcanic Phenomena of South America. Messrs.
Waterhouse, Walker, Newman, and White, have published several able papers
on the Insects which were collected, and I trust that many others will
hereafter follow. The plants from the southern parts of America will be
given by Dr. J. Hooker, in his great work on the Botany of the Southern
Hemisphere. The Flora of the Galapagos Archipelago is the subject of a
separate memoir by him, in the 'Linnean Transactions.' The Reverend
Professor Henslow has published a list of the plants collected by me at
the Keeling Islands; and the Reverend J. M. The living scene of our time is lit by the
light of the sun, and for every few rays that enter the human eye, and
convey the image of it to the human mind, great floods of the reflected
light pour out, swiftly and indefinitely, into space. Imagine, then, a man
moving out into space more rapidly than light, his face turned toward the
earth. Flashing through the void at, let us say, a million miles a second,
he would (if we can overlook the dispersion of the rays of light) overtake
in succession the light that fell on the French Revolution, the
Reformation, the Norman Conquest, and the faces of the ancient empires. He
would read, in reverse order, the living history of man and whatever lay
      before the coming of man.

Few thought, as they smiled over this fairy tale of science, that some
such panoramic survey of the story of the earth, and even of the heavens,
might one day be made in a leisure hour by ordinary mortals; that in the
soil on which they trod were surer records of the past than in its
doubtful literary remains, and in the deeper rocks were records that dimly
lit a vast abyss of time of which they never dreamed. It is the supreme
achievement of modern science to have discovered and deciphered these
records. The picture of the past which they afford is, on the whole, an
outline sketch. Here and there the details, the colour, the light and
shade, may be added; but the greater part of the canvas is left to the
more skilful hand of a future generation, and even the broad lines are at
times uncertain. Yet each age would know how far its scientific men have
advanced in constructing that picture of the growth of the heavens and the
earth, and the aim of the present volume is to give, in clear and plain
language, as full an account of the story as the present condition of our
knowledge and the limits of the volume will allow. The author has been for
many years interested in the evolution of things, or the way in which suns
and atoms, fishes and flowers, hills and elephants, even man and his
institutions, came to be what they are. Lecturing and writing on one or
other phase of the subject have, moreover, taught him a language which the
inexpert seem to understand, although he is not content merely to give a
superficial description of the past inhabitants of the earth.

The particular features which, it is hoped, may give the book a
distinctive place in the large literature of evolution are, first, that it
includes the many evolutionary discoveries of the last few years, gathers
its material from the score of sciences which confine themselves to
separate aspects of the universe, and blends all these facts and
discoveries in a more or less continuous chronicle of the life of the
heavens and the earth. Then the author has endeavoured to show, not merely
how, but why, scene succeeds scene in the chronicle of the earth, and life
slowly climbs from level to level. He has taken nature in the past as we
find it to-day: an interconnected whole, in which the changes of land and
sea, of heat and cold, of swamp and hill, are faithfully reflected in the
forms of its living population. And, finally, he has written for those who
are not students of science, or whose knowledge may be confined to one
branch of science, and used a plain speech which assumes no previous
      knowledge on the reader's part.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1043
Author: McCabe, Joseph
Release Date: Sep 1, 1997
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1043_69ed5c5a-dde5-4b87-8756-b83985ccb24e.jpg?v=1671249989
the-expression-of-the-emotions-in-man-and-animals-gb-1227
The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals

The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals

Many works have been written on Expression, but a greater number on
Physiognomy, that is, on the recognition of character through the
study of the permanent form of the features. With this latter subject I am
not here concerned. The older treatises,[1] which I have consulted,
have been of little or no service to me. The famous Confrences[2] of the
painter Le Brun, published in 1667, is the best known ancient work, and
contains some good remarks. Another somewhat old essay, namely, the
Discours, delivered 1774-1782, by the well-known Dutch anatomist Camper,[3] can
hardly be considered as having made any marked advance in the subject. The
following works, on the contrary, deserve the fullest consideration.

Sir Charles Bell, so illustrious for his discoveries in physiology,
published in 1806 the first edition, and in the third edition of his
Anatomy and Philosophy of Expression.[4] He may with justice be
said, not only to have laid the foundations of the subject as a branch of
science, but to have built up a noble structure. His work is in every way
deeply interesting; it includes graphic descriptions of the various
emotions, and is admirably illustrated. It is generally admitted that his
service consists chiefly in having shown the intimate relation which
exists between the movements of expression and those of respiration. One
of the most important points, small as it may at first appear, is that the
muscles round the eyes are involuntarily contracted during violent
expiratory efforts, in order to protect these delicate organs from the
pressure of the blood. This fact, which has been fully investigated for me
with the greatest kindness by Professors Donders of Utrecht, throws, as we
shall hereafter see, a flood of light on several of the most important
expressions of the human countenance. The merits of Sir C. Bells work
have been undervalued or quite ignored by several foreign writers, but
have been fully admitted by some, for instance by M. Lemoine,[5] who
with great justice says:Le livre de Ch. Bell devrait tre mdit
par quiconque essaye de faire parler le visage de lhomme, par les
philosophes aussi bien que par les artistes, car, sous une apparence plus
lgre et sous le prtexte de lesthtique, cest un des plus beaux
monuments de la science des rapports du physique et du moral.

From reasons which will presently be assigned, Sir C. Bell did not attempt
to follow out his views as far as they might have been carried. He does
not try to explain why different muscles are brought into action under
different emotions; why, for instance, the inner ends of the eyebrows are
raised, and the corners of the mouth depressed, by a person suffering from
grief or anxiety.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1227
Author: Darwin, Charles
Release Date: Mar 1, 1998
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1227_61aac209-5c6a-4dfa-8be0-f562cdf40633.jpg?v=1671250428
on-the-origin-of-species-by-means-of-natural-selection-gb-1228
On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection

On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection\r - Or, the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life

When on board H.M.S. On my return home, it occurred to me, in 1837, that
something might perhaps be made out on this question by patiently accumulating
and reflecting on all sorts of facts which could possibly have any bearing on
it. After five years work I allowed myself to speculate on the subject,
and drew up some short notes; these I enlarged in 1844 into a sketch of the
conclusions, which then seemed to me probable: from that period to the present
day I have steadily pursued the same object. I have more especially been induced to do this, as Mr.
Wallace, who is now studying the

natural history of the Malay archipelago, has arrived at almost exactly the
same general conclusions that I have on the origin of species. Last year he
sent to me a memoir on this subject, with a request that I would forward it to
Sir Charles Lyell, who sent it to the Linnean Society, and it is published in
the third volume of the Journal of that Society. It is given gladly in answer to the call for more from
those who have read the previous volumes, and whose letters are full of
the spirit of kindness and appreciation.

Many questions have come of late with these same letters; chief of which
is this: How shall one discover such things for himself? how shall we,
too, read the secrets of the Wood Folk? There is no space here to answer,
to describe the long training, even if one could explain perfectly what is
more or less unconscious. I would only suggest that perhaps the real
reason why we see so little in the woods is the way we go through themtalking,
laughing, rustling, smashing twigs, disturbing the peace of the solitudes
by what must seem strange and uncouth noises to the little wild creatures.
They, on the other hand, slip with noiseless feet through their native
coverts, shy, silent, listening, more concerned to hear than to be heard,
loving the silence, hating noise and fearing it, as they fear and hate
      their natural enemies.

We would not feel comfortable if a big barbarian came into our quiet home,
broke the door down, whacked his war-club on the furniture, and whooped
his battle yell. We could hardly be natural under the circumstances. Our
true dispositions would hide themselves. We might even vacate the house
bodily. Just so Wood Folk. Only as you copy their ways can you expect to
share their life and their secrets. And it is astonishing how little the
shyest of them fears you, if you but keep silence and avoid all
excitement, even of feeling; for they understand your feeling quite as
      much as your action.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1901
Author: Long, William J. A
fair result can be obtained only by fully stating and balancing the facts and
arguments on both sides of each question; and this is here impossible.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2009
Author: Darwin, Charles
Release Date: Dec 1, 1999
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2009_d4aebcdd-ae15-4f3a-93fd-82c0ce0088b7.jpg?v=1671252220
the-autobiography-of-charles-darwin-gb-2010
The Autobiography of Charles Darwin

The Autobiography of Charles Darwin

[My fathers autobiographical recollections, given in the present
chapter, were written for his children, and written without any thought
that they would ever be published. This sketch of my life was begun about May
28th at Hopedene (Mr. Hensleigh Wedgwoods house in Surrey.), and since
then I have written for nearly an hour on most afternoons. But his life was so
essentially one of work, that a history of the man could not be written
without following closely the career of the author. Thus it comes about
that the chief part of the book falls into chapters whose titles
correspond to the names of his books.

In arranging the letters I have adhered as far as possible to
chronological sequence, but the character and variety of his researches
make a strictly chronological order an impossibility. It was his habit to
work more or less simultaneously at several subjects. Experimental work
was often carried on as a refreshment or variety, while books entailing
reasoning and the marshalling of large bodies of facts were being written.
Moreover, many of his researches were allowed to drop, and only resumed
after an interval of years. Thus a rigidly chronological series of letters
would present a patchwork of subjects, each of which would be difficult to
follow. The Table of Contents will show in what way I have attempted to
      avoid this result.

In printing the letters I have followed (except in a few cases) the usual
plan of indicating the existence of omissions or insertions. My father's
letters give frequent evidence of having been written when he was tired or
hurried, and they bear the marks of this circumstance. In writing to a
friend, or to one of his family, he frequently omitted the articles: these
have been inserted without the usual indications, except in a few
instances, where it is of special interest to preserve intact the hurried
character of the letter. Other small words, such as "of", "to", etc., have
been inserted usually within brackets. I have not followed the originals
as regards the spelling of names, the use of capitals, or in the matter of
punctuation. My father underlined many words in his letters; these have
not always been given in italics,a rendering which would unfairly
      exaggerate their effect.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2087
Author: Darwin, Charles
Release Date: Feb 1, 2000
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Darwin, Francis, Sir, 1848-1925

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2087_8df17f7a-0700-4101-a506-a18722a4b6b7.jpg?v=1671252432
life-and-letters-of-charles-darwin-volume-2-gb-2088
Life and Letters of Charles Darwin — Volume 2

Life and Letters of Charles Darwin — Volume 2

led to comprehend true affinities. Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex

The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex

The nature of the following work will be best understood by a brief account of
how it came to be written. During many years I collected notes on the origin or
descent of man, without any intention of publishing on the subject, but rather
with the determination not to publish, as I thought that I should thus only add
to the prejudices against my views. It seemed to me sufficient to indicate, in
the first edition of my Origin of Species, that by this work
light would be thrown on the origin of man and his history; and
this implies that man must be included with other organic beings in any general
conclusion respecting his manner of appearance on this earth. Now the case
wears a wholly different aspect. When a naturalist like Carl Vogt ventures to
say in his address as President of the National Institution of Geneva (1869),
personne, en Europe au moins, nose plus soutenir la creation
indpendante et de toutes pices, des espces, it is manifest that at
least a large number of naturalists must admit that species are the modified
descendants of other species; and this especially holds good with the younger
and rising naturalists. The greater number accept the agency of natural
selection; though some urge, whether with justice the future must decide, that
I have greatly overrated its importance. Of the older and honoured chiefs in
natural science, many unfortunately are still opposed to evolution in every
form.

In consequence of the views now adopted by most naturalists, and which will
ultimately, as in every other case, be followed by others who are not
scientific, I have been led to put together my notes, so as to see how far the
general conclusions arrived at in my former works were applicable to man. This
seemed all the more desirable, as I had never deliberately applied these views
to a species taken singly. When we confine our attention to any one form, we
are deprived of the weighty arguments derived from the nature of the affinities
which connect together whole groups of organismstheir geographical
distribution in past and present times, and their geological succession. The
homological structure, embryological development, and rudimentary organs of a
species remain to be considered, whether it be man or any other animal, to
which our attention may be directed; but these great classes of facts afford,
as it appears to me, ample and conclusive evidence in favour of the principle
of gradual evolution. The strong support derived from the other arguments
should, however, always be kept before the mind.

The sole object of this work is to consider, firstly, whether man, like every
other species, is descended from some pre-existing form; secondly, the manner
of his development; and thirdly, the value of the differences between the
so-called races of man. As I shall confine myself to these points, it will not
be necessary to describe in detail the differences between the several
racesan enormous subject which has been fully described in many valuable
works. The high antiquity of man has recently been demonstrated by the labours
of a host of eminent men, beginning with M. Boucher de Perthes; and this is the
indispensable basis for understanding his origin. I shall, therefore, take this
conclusion for granted, and may refer my readers to the admirable treatises of
Sir Charles Lyell, Sir John Lubbock, and others. Nor shall I have occasion to
do more than to allude to the amount of difference between man and the
anthropomorphous apes; for Prof. Huxley, in the opinion of most competent
judges, has conclusively shewn that in every visible character man differs less
from the higher apes, than these do from the lower members of the same order of
Primates.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2300
Author: Darwin, Charles
Release Date: Aug 1, 2000
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2300_abe51f6c-7156-4f4a-906c-7d781b6f75b3.jpg?v=1671252931
note-on-the-resemblances-and-differences-in-the-structure-and-the-development-of-the-brain-in-man-and-apes-gb-2354
Note on the Resemblances and Differences in the Structure and the Development of the Brain in Man and Apes

Note on the Resemblances and Differences in the Structure and the Development of the Brain in Man and Apes

[This essay is taken from 'The Descent of Man and Selection in relation
to Sex' by Charles Darwin where it appears at the end of Chapter VII
which is also the end of Part I. Footnotes are numbered as they appear
in 'The Descent of Man.']

The controversy respecting the nature and the extent of the differences
in the structure of the brain in man and the apes, which arose some
fifteen years ago, has not yet come to an end, though the subject
matter of the dispute is, at present, totally different from what it
was formerly. It was originally asserted and re-asserted, with
singular pertinacity, that the brain of all the apes, even the highest,
differs from that of man, in the absence of such conspicuous structures
as the posterior lobes of the cerebral hemispheres, with the posterior
cornu of the lateral ventricle and the hippocampus minor, contained in
those lobes, which are so obvious in man.

But the truth that the three structures in question are as well
developed in apes' as in human brains, or even better; and that it is
characteristic of all the Primates (if we exclude the Lemurs) to have
these parts well developed, stands at present on as secure a basis as
any proposition in comparative anatomy. Moreover, it is admitted by
every one of the long series of anatomists who, of late years, have
paid special attention to the arrangement of the complicated sulci and
gyri which appear upon the surface of the cerebral hemispheres in man
and the higher apes, that they are disposed after the very same pattern
in him, as in them. Every principal gyrus and sulcus of a chimpanzee's
brain is clearly represented in that of a man, so that the terminology
which applies to the one answers for the other. On this point there is
no difference of opinion. Some years since, Professor Bischoff
published a memoir (70. 'Die Grosshirn-Windungen des Menschen;'
'Abhandlungen der K. The uniform fineness of
the particles of which it is composed is one of its chief
characteristic features; and this may be well observed in any
gravelly country, where a recently-ploughed field immediately
adjoins one which has long remained undisturbed for pasture, and
where the vegetable mould is exposed on the sides of a ditch or
hole. The subject may appear an insignificant one, but we
shall see that it possesses some interest; and the maxim
de minimis non curat lex, does not apply to
science. Even lie de Beaumont, who generally
undervalues small agencies and their accumulated effects,
remarks: [2] La couche trs-mince de la
terre vgtale est un monument dune haute
antiquit, et, par le fait de sa permanence, un objet
digne doccuper le gologue, et capable de lui
fournir des remarques intressantes. Although
the superficial layer of vegetable mould as a whole no doubt is
of the highest antiquity, yet in regard to its permanence, we
shall hereafter see reason to believe that its component
particles are in most cases removed at not a very slow rate, and
are replaced by others due to the disintegration of the
underlying materials.
As I was led to keep in my study during many months worms in
pots filled with earth, I became interested in them, and wished
to learn how far they acted consciously, and how much mental
power they displayed. I was the more desirous to learn
something on this head, as few observations of this kind have
been made, as far as I know, on animals so low in the scale of
organization and so poorly provided with sense-organs, as are
earth-worms.
In the year 1837, a short paper was read by me before the
Geological Society of London, [3] On the
Formation of Mould, in which it was shown that small
fragments of burnt marl, cinders, &c., which had been thickly
strewed over the surface of several meadows, were found after a
few years lying at the depth of some inches beneath the turf, but
still forming a layer. This apparent sinking of superficial
bodies is due, as was first suggested to me by Mr. Wedgwood of
Maer Hall in Staffordshire, to the large quantity of fine earth
continually brought up to the surface by worms in the form of
castings. These castings are sooner or later spread out and
cover up any object left on the surface. I was thus led to
conclude that all the vegetable mould over the whole country has
passed many times through, and will again pass many times
through, the intestinal canals of worms. Hence the term
animal mould would be in some respects more
appropriate than that commonly used of vegetable
mould.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2355
Author: Darwin, Charles
Release Date: Oct 1, 2000
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2355_838f53c3-8e1f-4cba-a1ae-f58574894d53.jpg?v=1671253080
the-naturalist-on-the-river-amazons-gb-2440
The Naturalist on the River Amazons

The Naturalist on the River Amazons

Having been urged to prepare a new edition of this
work for a wider circle than that contemplated in the former one, I
have thought it advisable to condense those portions which,
treating of abstruse scientific questions, presuppose a larger
amount of Natural History knowledge than an author has a right to
expect of the general reader. The personal narrative has been left
entire, together with those descriptive details likely to interest
all classes, young and old, relating to the great river itself, and
the wonderful country through which it flows, the luxuriant
primaeval forests that clothe almost every part of it, the climate,
productions, and inhabitants.

Signs are not wanting that this fertile, but scantily peopled
region will soon become, through recent efforts of the Peruvian and
Brazilian governments to make it accessible and colonise it, of far
higher importance to the nations of Northern Europe than it has
been hitherto. The full significance of the title, the
largest river in the world, which we are all taught
in our schoolboy days to apply to the Amazons, without having a
distinct idea of its magnitude, will then become apparent to the
English public. It will be new to most people, that this noble
stream has recently been navigated by steamers to a distance of
2200 geographical miles from its mouth at Par, or double
the distance which vessels are able to reach on the Yang-tze-Kiang,
the largest river of the old world; the depth of water in the dry
season being about seven fathoms up to this terminus of navigation.
It is not, however, the length of the trunk stream, that has earned
for the Amazons the appellation of the Mediterranean of
South America, given it by the Brazilians of Par;
but the network of by-channels and lakes, which everywhere
accompanies its course at a distance from the banks, and which adds
many thousands of miles of easy inland navigation to the total
presented by the main river and its tributaries. The Peruvians,
especially, if I may judge from letters received within the past
few weeks, seem to be stirring themselves to grasp the advantages
which the possession of the upper course of the river places within
their reach. Vessels of heavy tonnage have arrived in Par,
from England, with materials for the formation of shipbuilding
establishments, at a point situated two thousand miles from the
mouth of the river. Peruvian steamers have navigated from the Andes
to the Atlantic, and a quantity of cotton (now exported for the
first time), the product of the rich and healthy country bordering
the Upper Amazons, has been conveyed by this means, and shipped
from Par to Europe. The probability of general curiosity in
England being excited before long with regard to this hitherto
neglected country, will be considered, of itself, a sufficient
reason for placing an account of its natural features and present
condition within reach of all readers.

LONDON, January, 1864.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2440
Author: Bates, Henry Walter
Release Date: Dec 1, 2000
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2440_5e2e1f1f-29d7-4744-9412-4a4c387a1ee9.jpg?v=1671253297
more-letters-of-charles-darwin-volume-1-gb-2739
More Letters of Charles Darwin — Volume 1

More Letters of Charles Darwin — Volume 1\r - A Record of His Work in a Series of Hitherto Unpublished Letters

The "Life and Letters of Charles Darwin" was published in 1887. Since that
date, through the kindness of various correspondents, additional letters
have been received; among them may be mentioned those written by Mr.
Darwin to Mr. Belt, Lady Derby, Hugh Falconer, Mr. Francis Galton, Huxley,
Lyell, Mr. John Morley, Max Muller, Owen, Lord Playfair, John Scott,
Thwaites, Sir William Turner, John Jenner Weir. But the material for our
work consisted in chief part of a mass of letters which, for want of space
or for other reasons, were not printed in the "Life and Letters." We would
draw particular attention to the correspondence with Sir Joseph Hooker. To
him Mr. Darwin wrote with complete freedom, and this has given something
of a personal charm to the most technical of his letters. There is also
much correspondence, hardly inferior in biographical interest, with Sir
Charles Lyell, Fritz Muller, Mr. Huxley, and Mr. Wallace. From this unused
material we have been able to compile an almost complete record of Mr.
Darwin's work in a series of letters now published for the first time. We
have, however, in a few instances, repeated paragraphs, or in one or two
cases whole letters, from the "Life and Letters," where such repetition
seemed necessary for the sake of clearness or continuity.

Our two volumes contain practically all the matter that it now seems
desirable to publish. But at some future time others may find interesting
data in what remains unprinted; this is certainly true of a short series
of letters dealing with the Cirripedes, which are omitted solely for want
of space. (Preface/1. Those addressed to the late Albany Hancock have
already appeared in the "Transactions of the Tyneside Nat. Field Club,"
      VIII., page 250.)

We are fortunate in being permitted, by Sir Joseph Hooker and by Mr.
Wallace, to publish certain letters from them to Mr. Darwin. We have also
been able to give a few letters from Sir Charles Lyell, Hugh Falconer,
Edward Forbes, Dr. Asa Gray, Professor Hyatt, Fritz Muller, Mr. Francis
Galton, and Sir T. Lauder Brunton. I grieve to bother you on such a subject. I am sick and
tired of this carte correspondence. I cannot conceive what Humboldt's
Pyrenean violet is: no such is mentioned in Webb, and no alpine one at
all. I am sorry I forgot to mention the stronger African affinity of the
eastern Canary Islands. Thank you for mentioning it. I cannot admit,
without further analysis, that most of the peculiar Atlantic Islands
genera were derived from Europe, and have since become extinct there. I
have rather thought that many are only altered forms of existing European
genera; but this is a very difficult point, and would require a careful
study of such genera and allies with this object in view. The subject has
often presented itself to me as a grand one for analytic botany. No doubt
its establishment would account for the community of the peculiar genera
on the several groups and islets, but whilst so many species are common we
must allow for a good deal of migration of peculiar genera too.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2740
Author: Darwin, Charles
Release Date: Jul 1, 2001
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Darwin, Francis, Sir, 1848-1925 , Seward, A. The general result of
our investigations might be summed up thus: we found that the multiplicity
of the forms of animal life, great as that may be, may be reduced to a
comparatively few primitive plans or types of construction; that a further
study of the development of those different forms revealed to us that they
were again reducible, until we at last brought the infinite diversity of
animal, and even vegetable life, down to the primordial form of a single
      cell.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2922
Author: Huxley, Thomas Henry
Release Date: Nov 1, 2001
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2922_47306baf-ed38-454a-9667-7c669e576584.jpg?v=1671254559
