I suppose there are still
people who, given a choice, will go to a drive-through teller just so
they can deal with a "live person" instead of a machine. But even those
people will admit that it is nice to have the option of doing things for
yourself, on your own schedule, anywhere. Do you remember what it was
like before automatic tellers? Banks closed at 3 p.m. on weekdays.
Each Saturday you had to guess how much money you would need for the
following week. If you were wrong you had to cash a check at a food
store (and maybe buy something you didn't want). And if you were out of
town? Well, there were always credit cards.
We don't do that anymore. I think many people go to the automatic
teller because they like the privacy of handling their own business
without having to explain it all to someone else. It deals
with the practical aspects of using the rapidly growing global online
information resource.
The book is distributed in a form that is designed to be easily
accessible with the maximum range of computers, printer types, and
search programs. Also, it has been designed to be compatible with
electronic reading devices for the blind. Therefore, many frills
(such as fancy formatting, extraneous characters or tags) have been
omitted.
The main subject of the book is what you can get out of the
online resource.
Expect an outline, not a comprehensive list or directory of all
available offerings. This book explores selected applications
across network and service boundaries, to show how these needs may
be satisfied.
In the process, it gives access information for a large number
of specific online offerings.
The applications range from entertainment and the bizarre to
databases and special services for professionals and organizations.
You are not expected to live in the United States or in Norway.
Emphasis is on major international offerings available through
services and networks like the Internet, BITNET, CompuServe, Echo,
FidoNet, Usenet, Dialcom, Dow Jones/News Retrieval, MCI, NewsNet
and UUCP. These services can be accessed from almost anywhere.
Talking about the Internet, we do not expect that it will be
easy for you to get full access. We assume that most people can get
access to this network by electronic mail only.
I wrote The Online World for parents and youth, teachers,
students, business people, social workers, psychologists, young,
old, for anybody interested in knowing a bit more about our
current "Global Village."
You can read it like a novel, to get an idea of what is going
on. It can be used as a practical guide book to online data bases
and news sources, or as a book of reference.
You need not be a computer expert or an experienced "onliner"
to find it useful.
While not being a textbook on data communications, it contains
much information to help novices get started. For an introduction
to telecommunications, check out appendix 2 and 3 before continuing
with Chapter 1.
Before you start, one word of warning. New online offerings are
born each day, while others are being closed down. EFF is a
nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., dedicated to ensuring
that everyone has access to the newly emerging communications technologies
vital to active participation in the events of our world. As more and more
information is available online, new doors open up for those who have
access to that information. Unfortunately, unless access is broadly
encouraged, individuals can be disenfranchised and doors can close, as
well. The Big Dummy's Guide to the Internet was written to help open some
doors to the vast amounts of information available on the world's largest
network, the Internet.
The spark for the Big Dummy's Guide to the Internet was ignited in
a few informal conversations that included myself and Steve Cisler of Apple
Computer, Inc., in June of 1991. With the support of Apple Computer, EFF
engaged Adam Gaffin to write the book and actually took on the project in
September of 1991.
The idea was to write a guide to the Internet for people who had
little or no experience with network communications. We intended to post
this guide to the Net in ASCII and HyperCard formats and to give it away on
disk, as well as have a print edition available. We have more than
realized our goal. Individuals from as geographically far away as Germany,
Italy, Canada, South Africa, Japan, Scotland, Norway, and Antarctica have
all sent electronic mail to say that they downloaded the Big Dummy's Guide
to the Internet. The guide is now available in a wide array of formats,
including ACSCII text, HyperCard, World Wide Web, PostScript and
AmigaGuide. And the guide will be published in a printed format by MIT
Press in June of 1994.
EFF would like to thank author Adam Gaffin for doing a terrific job
of explaining the Net in such a nonthreatening way. We'd also like to
thank the folks at Apple, especially Steve Cisler of the Apple Library, for
their support of our efforts to bring this guide to you.
We invite you to join with EFF in our fight to ensure that equal
access to the networks and free speech are protected in newly emerging
technologies. We are a membership organization, and through donations like
yours, we can continue to sponsor important projects to make communications
easier. Information about the Electronic Frontier Foundation and some of
the work that we do can be found at the end of this book.
We hope that the Big Dummy's Guide to the Internet helps you learn
about whole new worlds, where new friends and experiences are sure to be
yours. There is a
parish of Stevenston in Cunningham; a second place of the name in
the Barony of Bothwell in Lanark; a third on Lyne, above Drochil
Castle; the fourth on the Tyne, near Traprain Law.
Stevenson of Stevenson (co. Lanark) swore fealty to Edward I in
1296, and the last of that family died after the
Restoration. Stevensons of Hirdmanshiels, in Midlothian,
rode in the Bishops Raid of Aberlady, served as jurors,
stood bail for neighboursHunter of Polwood, for
instanceand became extinct about the same period, or
possibly earlier. A Stevenson of Luthrie and another of
Pitroddie make their bows, give their names, and vanish.
And by the year 1700 it does not appear that any acre of Scots
land was vested in any Stevenson. [2a]
Here is, so far, a melancholy picture of backward progress,
and a family posting towards extinction. But the law
(however administered, and I am bound to aver that, in Scotland,
it couldna weel be waur) acts as a kind of dredge,
and with dispassionate impartiality brings up into the light of
day, and shows us for a moment, in the jury-box or on the
gallows, the creeping things of the past. By these broken
glimpses we are able to trace the existence of many other and
more inglorious Stevensons, picking a private way through the
brawl that makes Scots history. They were members of
Parliament for Peebles, Stirling, Pittenweem, Kilrenny, and
Inverurie. We find them burgesses of Edinburgh; indwellers
in Biggar, Perth, and Dalkeith. Thomas was the forester of
Newbattle Park, Gavin was a baker, John a maltman, Francis a
chirurgeon, and Schir William a priest. In
the feuds of Humes and Heatleys, Cunninghams, Montgomeries,
Mures, Ogilvies, and Turnbulls, we find them inconspicuously
involved, and apparently getting rather better than they
gave. Schir William (reverend gentleman) was cruellie
slaughtered on the Links of Kincraig in 1582; James (in
the mill-town of Roberton), murdered in 1590; Archibald
(in Gallowfarren), killed with shots of pistols and
hagbuts in 1608. Three violent deaths in about seventy
years, against which we can only put the case of Thomas, servant
to Hume of Cowden Knowes, who was arraigned with his two young
masters for the death of the Bastard of Mellerstanes in
1569. John (in Dalkeith) stood sentry without
Holyrood while the banded lords were despatching Rizzio
within. William, at the ringing of Perth bell, ran before
Gowrie House with ane sword, and, entering to the yearde,
saw George Craiggingilt with ane twa-handit sword and utheris
nychtbouris; at quilk time James Boig cryit ower ane wynds,
Awa hame! ye will all be hangita
piece of advice which William took, and immediately
depairtit. John got a maid with child to him
in Biggar, and seemingly deserted her; she was hanged on the
Castle Hill for infanticide, June 1614; and Martin, elder in
Dalkeith, eternally disgraced the name by signing witness in a
witch trial, 1661. These are two of our black sheep. [3a] Under the Restoration, one
Stevenson was a bailie in Edinburgh, and another the lessee of
the Canonmills. There were at the same period two
physicians of the name in Edinburgh, one of whom, Dr. Archibald,
appears to have been a famous man in his day and
generation. The Court had continual need of him; it was he
who reported, for instance, on the state of Rumbold; and he was
for some time in the enjoyment of a pension of a thousand pounds
Scots (about eighty pounds sterling) at a time when five hundred
pounds is described as an opulent future. I
do not know if I should be glad or sorry that he failed to keep
favour; but on 6th January 1682 (rather a cheerless New
Years present) his pension was expunged. [4a] There need be no doubt, at least,
of my exultation at the fact that he was knighted and recorded
arms. Not quite so genteel, but still in public life, Hugh
was Under-Clerk to the Privy Council, and liked being so
extremely. I gather this from his conduct in September
1681, when, with all the lords and their servants, he took the
woful and soul-destroying Test, swearing it word by word
upon his knees. And, behold! it was in vain, for
Hugh was turned out of his small post in 1684. [4b] Sir Archibald and Hugh were both
plainly inclined to be trimmers; but there was one witness of the
name of Stevenson who held high the banner of the
CovenantJohn, Land-Labourer, [4c] in the parish of Daily, in
Carrick, that eminently pious man. He
seems to have been a poor sickly soul, and shows himself disabled
with scrofula, and prostrate and groaning aloud with fever; but
the enthusiasm of the martyr burned high within him.
I was made to take joyfully the spoiling of my goods,
and with pleasure for His names sake wandered in deserts
and in mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. I lay
four months in the coldest season of the year in a haystack in my
fathers garden, and a whole February in the open fields
not far from Camragen, and this I did without the least prejudice
from the night air; one night, when lying in the fields near to
the Carrick-Miln, I was all covered with snow in the
morning. Many nights have I lain with pleasure in the
churchyard of Old Daily, and made a grave my pillow; frequently
have I resorted to the old walls about the glen, near to
Camragen, and there sweetly rested. The visible band
of God protected and directed him. Dragoons were turned
aside from the bramble-bush where he lay hidden. Miracles
were performed for his behoof. I got a horse and a
woman to carry the child, and came to the same mountain, where I
wandered by the mist before; it is commonly known by the name of
Kellsrhins: when we came to go up the mountain, there came on a
great rain, which we thought was the occasion of the
childs weeping, and she wept so bitterly, that all we
could do could not divert her from it, so that she was ready to
burst. When we got to the top of the mountain, where the
Lord had been formerly kind to my soul in prayer, I looked round
me for a stone, and espying one, I went and brought it.
When the woman with me saw me set down the stone, she smiled, and
asked what I was going to do with it. I told her I was
going to set it up as my Ebenezer, because hitherto, and in that
place, the Lord had formerly helped, and I hoped would yet
help. The rain still continuing, the child weeping
bitterly, I went to prayer, and no sooner did I cry to God, but
the child gave over weeping, and when we got up from prayer, the
rain was pouring down on every side, but in the way where we were
to go there fell not one drop; the place not rained on was as big
as an ordinary avenue. And so great a saint was the
natural butt of Satans persecutions. I
retired to the fields for secret prayer about mid-night.
When I went to pray I was much straitened, and could not get one
request, but Lord pity, Lord help;
this I came over frequently; at length the terror of Satan fell
on me in a high degree, and all I could say even then
wasLord help. I continued in the duty
for some time, notwithstanding of this terror. At length I
got up to my feet, and the terror still increased; then the enemy
took me by the arm-pits, and seemed to lift me up by my
arms. While commemorating the labours and honouring the names of
those who have striven to elevate man above the material and
mechanical, the labours of the important industrial class to whom
society owes so much of its comfort and well-being are also entitled to
consideration. They derive their
appellation from the fact that when charged with hydrogen, or some
other form of gas, they are lighter than the air which they displace.
Of these three types the free balloon is by far the oldest and the
simplest, but it is entirely at the mercy of the wind and other
elements, and cannot be controlled for direction, but must drift
whithersoever the wind or air currents take it. On the other hand, the
airship, being provided with engines to propel it through the air, and
with rudders and elevators to control it for direction and height, can
be steered in whatever direction is desired, and voyages can be made
from one place to another--always provided that the force of the wind
is not sufficiently strong to overcome the power of the engines. In no other trend of human endeavour is this
factor so potently demonstrated as in connection with Man's Conquest of
      the Air.

The dogged struggle against the blind forces of Nature was waged
tenaciously and perseveringly for centuries. But the measure of success
recorded from time to time was so disappointing as to convey the
impression, except in a limited circle, that the problem was impossible of
solution. In the meantime wondrous changes had taken place in the methods
of transportation by land and sea. The steam and electric railway, steam
propulsion of vessels, and mechanical movement along the highroads had
been evolved and advanced to a high standard of perfection, to the untold
advantage of the community. Consequently it was argued, if only a system
of travel along the aerial highways could be established, then all other
methods of mechanical transportation would be rendered, if not entirely
      obsolete, at least antiquated.

At last man triumphed over Natureat least to such a degree as to
inspire the confidence of the world at large, and to bring aerial travel
and transportation within range of realisation. But what has been the
result? We will try add 800 more,
during 1997, but it will take all the effort we can manage to do
the doubling of our library again this year, what with the other
massive requirements it is going to take to get incorporated and
establish something that will have some permanence.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 817
Author: Raymond, Eric S.
Release Date: Feb 1, 1997
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Raymond, Eric S., 1957- , Steele, Guy L., 1954-

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/817_9528d73f-8705-4757-b36d-0ba0e6880df0.jpg?v=1671248866
the-aeroplane-speaks-gb-818
The Aeroplane Speaks

The Aeroplane Speaks

The reasons impelling me to write this book, the maiden effort of my pen,
are, firstly, a strong desire to help the ordinary man to understand the
Aeroplane and the joys and troubles of its Pilot; and, secondly, to
produce something of PRACTICAL assistance to the Pilot and his invaluable
assistant the Rigger. Three million telephones are now scattered abroad in foreign
countries, and seven millions are massed here, in the land of its birth.

So entirely has the telephone outgrown the ridicule with which, as many
people can well remember, it was first received, that it is now in most
places taken for granted, as though it were a part of the natural
phenomena of this planet. It has so marvellously extended the facilities
of conversationthat "art in which a man has all mankind for
competitors"that it is now an indispensable help to whoever would
live the convenient life. The disadvantage of being deaf and dumb to all
absent persons, which was universal in pre-telephonic days, has now
happily been overcome; and I hope that this story of how and by whom it
was done will be a welcome addition to American libraries.

It is such a story as the telephone itself might tell, if it could speak
with a voice of its own. It is not technical. It is not statistical. It is
not exhaustive. It is so brief, in fact, that a second volume could
readily be made by describing the careers of telephone leaders whose names
I find have been omitted unintentionally from this booksuch
indispensable men, for instance, as William R. Sargent, three veterans who know telephony in all
its phases; George Y. Wallace, the last survivor of the Rocky Mountain
pioneers; Jasper N. Keller, of Texas and New England; W. T. Gentry, the
central figure of the Southeast, and the following presidents of telephone
companies: Bernard E. Sunny, of Chicago; E. B. Field, of Denver; D. The
desirability of such a digest is not to be denied, but as there are some
twenty-five hundred or more inventions to be considered (including those
covered by caveats), the task of its preparation would be stupendous.
Besides, the resultant data would extend this book into several additional
volumes, thereby rendering it of value chiefly to the technical student,
but taking it beyond the bounds of biography.

We should, however, deem our presentation of Mr. Edison's work to be
imperfectly executed if we neglected to include an intelligible exposition
of the broader theoretical principles of his more important inventions. No attempt has been made to conform with strictly scientific
terminology, but, for the benefit of the general reader, well-understood
conventional expressions, such as "flow of current," etc., have been
employed. No discovery, in the whole range of
history, has elicited an equal degree of applause and admirationnever
has the genius of man won a triumph which at first blush seemed more
glorious. The mathematical and physical sciences had in aeronautics
achieved apparently their greatest honours, and inaugurated a new era in
the progress of knowledge. After having subjected the earth to their
power; after having made the waves of the sea stoop in submission under
the keels of their ships; after having caught the lightning of heaven and
made it subservient to the ordinary purposes of life, the genius of man
undertook to conquer the regions of the air. Imagination, intoxicated with
past successes, could descry no limit to human power; the gates of the
infinite seemed to be swinging back before mans advancing step, and the
last was believed to be the greatest of his achievements.

In order to comprehend the frenzy of the enthusiasm which the first
aeronautic triumphs called forth, it is necessary to recall the appearance
of Montgolfier at Versailles, on the 19th of September, 1783, before Louis
XVI, or of the earliest aeronauts at the Tuileries. Paris hailed the first
of these men with the greatest acclaim, and then, as now, says a French
writer, the voice of Paris gave the cue to France, and France to the
world! Nobles and artisans, scientific men and badauds, great and small,
were moved with one universal impulse. In the streets the praises of the
balloon were sung; in the libraries models of it abounded; and in the
salons the one universal topic was the great machine. In anticipation,
the poet delighted himself with birds-eye views of the scenery of strange
countries; the prisoner mused on what might be a new way of escape; the
physicist visited the laboratory in which the lightning and the meteors
were manufactured; the geometrician beheld the plans of cities and the
outlines of kingdoms; the general discovered the position of the enemy or
rained shells on the besieged town; the police beheld a new mode in which
to carry on the secret service; Hope heralded a new conquest from the
domain of nature, and the historian registered a new chapter in the annals
      of human knowledge.

Scientific discoveries in general, says Arago, even those from which
men expect the most advantage, like those of the compass and the
steam-engine, were greeted at first with contempt, or at the best with
indifference. Political events, and the fortunes of armies monopolised
almost entirely the attention of the people. But to this rule there are
two exceptionsthe discoveries of America and of aerostatics, the
advents of Columbus and of Montgolfier. It is not here our duty to
inquire how it happened that the discoveries made by these two personages
are classed together. Air-travelling may be as unproductive of actual good
to society as filling the belly with the east wind is to the body, while
every one knows something of the extent to which the discovery of Columbus
has influenced the character, the civilisation, the destinies, in short,
of the human race. We are speaking at present of the known and
well-attested fact, that the discovery of America and the discovery of the
method of traversing space by means of balloonshowever they may
differ in respect of results to manrank equally in this, that of
all other discoveries these two have attracted the greatest amount of
attention, and given, in their respective eras, the greatest impulse to
popular feeling. Let the reader recall the marks of enthusiasm which the
discovery of the islands on the east coast of America excited in
Andalusia, in Catalonia, in Aragon and Castilelet him read the
narrative of the honours paid by town and village, not only to the hero of
the enterprise, but even to his commonest sailors, and then let him search
the records of the epoch for the degree of sensation produced by the
discovery of aeronautics in France, which stands in the same relationship
to this event as that in which Spain stands to the other. The processions
of Seville and Barcelona are the exact prototypes of the fetes of Lyons
and Paris. In France, in 1783, as in Spain two centuries previously, the
popular imagination was so greatly excited by the deeds performed, that it
began to believe in possibilities of the most unlikely description. In
Spain, the conquestadores and their followers believed that in a few days
after they had landed on American soil, they would have gathered as much
gold and precious stones, as were then possessed by the richest European
Sovereigns. In France, each one following his own notions, made out for
himself special benefits to flow from the discovery of balloons. Every
discovery then appeared to be only the precursor of other and greater
discoveries, and nothing after that time seemed to be impossible to him
who attempted the conquest of the atmosphere. This idea clothed itself in
every form. The young embraced it with enthusiasm, the old made it the
subject of endless regrets. When one of the first aeronautic ascents was
made, the old Marechal Villeroi, an octogenarian and an invalid, was
conducted to one of the windows of the Tuileries, almost by force, for he
did not believe in balloons. The balloon, meanwhile, detached itself from
its moorings; the physician Charles, seated in the car, gaily saluted the
public, and was then majestically launched into space in his air-boat; and
at once the old Marechal, beholding this, passed suddenly from unbelief to
perfect faith in aerostatics and in the capacity of the human mind, fell
on his knees, and, with his eyes bathed in tears, moaned out pitifully the
words, Yes, it is fixed! It is certain! They will find out the secret of
avoiding death; but it will be after I am gone!

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 899
Author: Marion, Fulgence
Release Date: May 1, 1997
Format: eBook
Language: English
Publication Date: 1870

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/899_d3ac37ad-6262-4750-8735-958e62022dbe.jpg?v=1671249027
flying-machines-construction-and-operation-gb-907
Flying Machines: Construction and Operation

Flying Machines: Construction and Operation\r - A Practical Book Which Shows, in Illustrations, Working Plans and Text, How to Build and Navigate the Modern Airship

This book is written for the guidance of the novice in aviationthe
man who seeks practical information as to the theory, construction and
operation of the modern flying machine. With this object in view the
wording is intentionally plain and non-technical. I put
this Fellow upon an Account of his office: Where he fell to Discourse of
this Palate-Science, with such a settled Countenance and Magisterial
Gravity, as if he had been handling some profound Point of Divinity. He
made a Learned Distinction of the several sorts of Appetites, of that of a
Man before he begins to eat, and of those after the second and third
Service: The Means simply to satisfy the first, and then to raise and
acute the other two: The ordering of the Sauces, first in general, and
then proceeded to the Qualities of the Ingredients, and their Effects: The
Differences of Sallets, according to their seasons, which ought to be
serv'd up hot, and which cold: The Manner of their Garnishment and
Decoration, to render them yet more acceptable to the Eye after which he
entered upon the Order of the whole Service, full of weighty and important
      Considerations."

It is consistent with Montaigne's large-minded habit thus to applaud the
gifts of this master of his art who happened not to be a Frenchman. It is
a canon of belief with the modern Englishman that the French alone can
achieve excellence in the art of cookery, and when once a notion of this
sort shall have found a lodgment in an Englishman's brain, the task of
removing it will be a hard one. Not for a moment is it suggested that
Englishmen or any one else should cease to recognise the sovereign merits
of French cookery; all that is entreated is toleration, and perchance
approval, of cookery of other schools. But the favourable consideration of
any plea of this sort is hindered by the fact that the vast majority of
Englishmen when they go abroad find no other school of cookery by the
testing of which they may form a comparison. This universal prevalence of
French cookery may be held to be a proof of its supreme excellencethat
it is first, and the rest nowhere; but the victory is not so complete as
it seems, and the facts would bring grief and humiliation rather than
patriotic pride to the heart of a Frenchman like Brillat-Savarin. For the
cookery we meet in the hotels of the great European cities, though it may
be based on French traditions, is not the genuine thing, but a bastard,
cosmopolitan growth, the same everywhere, and generally vapid and
uninteresting. French cookery of the grand school suffers by being
associated with such commonplace achievements. It is noted in the
following pages how rarely English people on their travels penetrate where
true Italian cookery may be tasted, wherefore it has seemed worth while to
place within the reach of English housewives some Italian recipes which
are especially fitted for the presentation of English fare to English
palates under a different and not unappetising guise. Most of them will be
found simple and inexpensive, and special care has been taken to include
those recipes which enable the less esteemed portions of meat and the
cheaper vegetables and fish to be treated more elaborately than they have
hitherto been treated by English cooks.

The author wishes to tender her acknowledgments to her husband for certain
suggestions and emendations made in the revision of the introduction, and
for his courage in dining, "greatly daring," off many of the dishes. He
still lives and thrives. Also to Mrs. Mitchell, her cook, for the interest
and enthusiasm she has shown in the work, for her valuable advice, and for
the care taken in testing the recipes.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 930
Author: Waters, W. Those who occupy
official position and who can help to ameliorate this
increasing evil, should begin to do so without delay.
Abroad England, Germany and France and at home
Massachusetts and Connecticut have sought to modify
these conditions by legislation and our National Treasury
Department only last year, in establishing a standard
for its ink, gives official recognition of these
truths.
There is no "History of Ink;" but of ink history
there is a wealth of material, although historians have
neglected to record information about the very substance
by which they sought to keep and transmit the
chronicles they most desired to preserve. From the
beginning of the Christian era to the present day,
"Ink" literature, exclusive of its etymology, chemical
formulas, and methods of manufacture, has been confined
to brief statements in the encyclopedias, which
but repeat each other. A half dozen original articles,
covering only some particular branch together with a
few treatises more general in their ramifications of
the subject, can also be found. Seventy lines about
"writing ink" covering its history for nearly four
thousand years is all that is said in "The Origin and
Progress of Handwriting," a revised book of hundreds
of pages of Sir Thomas Astle, London, 1876, and once
deemed the very highest authority.
The mass of ancient and comparatively modern documents
which we have inherited, chronicle nothing
about the material with which they were written.
The more valuable of them are disfigured by the
superscription of newer writings over the partially
erased earlier ones, thus rendering the work of
ascertaining their real character most difficult.
Nevertheless, patient research and advanced science have
enabled us to intelligently study and investigate, and
from the evidence thus gained, to state facts and
formulate opinions that may perhaps outlast criticism.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1483
Author: Carvalho, David Nunes
Release Date: Oct 1, 1998
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1483_0e9e6adf-4844-479c-a2d2-b4166f10ee83.jpg?v=1671251001
the-perdue-chicken-cookbook-gb-1979
The Perdue Chicken Cookbook

The Perdue Chicken Cookbook

Want to know a high stress situation? All this book seeks to do is to outline the
personalities of some of the outstanding American inventors and indicate
      the significance of their achievements.

Acknowledgments are due the Editor of the Series and to members of the
staff of the Yale University Press particularly, Miss Constance Lindsay
Skinner, Mr. Arthur Edwin Krows, and Miss Frances Hartwithout whose
intelligent assistance the book could not have been completed in time to
take its place in the Series.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 2900
Author: Thompson, Holland
Release Date: Nov 1, 2001
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/2900_438c39ee-4fc9-4805-8ba1-83c6fac2d81c.jpg?v=1671254512
the-jargon-file-version-4-2-2-20-aug-2000-gb-3008
The Jargon File, Version 4.2.2, 20 Aug 2000

The Jargon File, Version 4.2.2, 20 Aug 2000

This document is a collection of slang terms used by various
subcultures of computer hackers. Though some technical material
is included for background and flavor, it is not a technical
dictionary; what we describe here is the language hackers use
among themselves for fun, social communication, and technical
debate.
The `hacker culture' is actually a loosely networked
collection of subcultures that is nevertheless conscious of some
important shared experiences, shared roots, and shared values. It
has its own myths, heroes, villains, folk epics, in-jokes,
taboos, and dreams. Because hackers as a group are particularly
creative people who define themselves partly by rejection of
`normal' values and working habits, it has unusually rich and
conscious traditions for an intentional culture less than 40
years old.
As usual with slang, the special vocabulary of hackers helps
hold their culture together -- it helps hackers recognize each
other's places in the community and expresses shared values and
experiences. Also as usual, not knowing the slang (or
using it inappropriately) defines one as an outsider, a mundane,
or (worst of all in hackish vocabulary) possibly even a suit. All human cultures use slang in this
threefold way -- as a tool of communication, and of inclusion,
and of exclusion.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 3008
Author: Raymond, Eric S.
Release Date: Jan 1, 2002
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Editor: Raymond, Eric S., 1957- , Steele, Guy L., 1954-

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/3008_7d07a7f9-7c0f-4c3d-a74e-772b23f6cf04.jpg?v=1671254794
getting-gold-a-practical-treatise-for-prospectors-miners-and-students-gb-3679
Getting Gold: A Practical Treatise for Prospectors, Miners and Students

Getting Gold: A Practical Treatise for Prospectors, Miners and Students

Some six years ago the author published a small book entitled "Practical
Mining," designed specially for the use of those engaged in the always
fascinating, though not as invariably profitable, pursuit of "Getting
Gold." Of this ten thousand copies were sold, nearly all in Australasia,
and the work is now out of print. The London Mining Journal of
September 9th, 1891, said of it: "We have seldom seen a book in which so
much interesting matter combined with useful information is given in so
      small a space."

The gold-mining industry has grown considerably since 1891, and it
appeared to the writer that the present would be a propitious time to
bring out a similar work, but with a considerably enlarged scope. What has
been aimed at is to make "Getting Gold" a compendium, in specially
concrete form, of useful information respecting the processes of winning
from the soil and the after-treatment of gold and gold ores, including
some original practical discoveries by the author. Practical information,
original and selected, is given to mining company directors, mine
managers, quartz mill operators, and prospectors. In "Rules of Thumb,"
chapters XI. and XII., will be found a large number of useful hints on
subjects directly and indirectly connected with gold-mining.

The author's mining experience extends back thirty years and he therefore
ventures to believe with some degree of confidence that the information,
original or compiled, which the book contains, will be found both useful
and profitable to those who are in any capacity interested in the
      gold-mining industry.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 3679
Author: Johnson, J. Wicken

Although this work fully deals with all the many matters connected with
the art of living in Australia, its principal object is the attempt to
bring about some improvement in the extraordinary food-habits at
present in vogue. For years past the fact that our people live in
direct opposition to their semi-tropical environment has been
constantly before me. As it will be found in the opening portion of the
chapter on School Cookery, the consumption of butcher's meat and of tea
is enormously in excess of any common sense requirements, and is
paralleled nowhere else in the world. On the other hand, there has been
no real attempt to develop our deep-sea fisheries; market gardening is
deplorably neglected, only a few of the more ordinary varieties being
cultivated; salads, which are easily within the daily reach of every
home, are conspicuous by their absence; and Australian wine, which
should be the national beverage of every-day life, is at tablealmost
a curiosity.
Nearly three years have been occupied in the preparation of this
volume, as several of the subjects it treats of have hitherto remained
practically unexplored. This statement is not intended to excuse
any shortcomings, but simply to explain the impediments which had to be
overcome. There has been some little difficulty, therefore, in
obtaining information in many instances. At the same time, it must be
cheerfully recorded that assistance was freely forthcoming on the part
of those from whom it was sought. Quite a number have been interviewed
on the topics with which they were familiar; and on several occasions
this has necessitated journeys out of Sydney on the writer's part. With
the object of making inquiries into the fish supply of Melbourne, also,
a special visit was paid to that city. And further, in order to gain an
insight into vineyard work and cellar management, an instructive time
was passed at Dr. T. Fiaschi's magnificent Tizzana vineyard on the
Hawkesbury River.
It may seem to savour somewhat of boldness, yet I hazard the opinion
that the real development of Australia will never actually begin till
this wilful violation of her people's food-life ceases. For let us
suppose that the semi-tropical character of our Australian life was
duly appreciated by one and all. If such were the caseand I would it
were sothere would be a wonderful change from the present state of
affairs. But as it is, the manners and customs of the Australians are a
perpetual challenge to the range of temperature in which they live.
Indeed, the form of food they indulge in proves incontestably
that they have never yet realized their semi-tropical environment. With
a proper recognition of existing climatic surroundings there would be
an overwhelming demand for more fish food; for something better than
the present Liliputian supply; and for the creation of extensive deep-sea
fisheries. Fish in Australia is nothing more than a high-priced
luxury, although projects for the development of the deep-sea fisheries
have been repeatedly suggested. Somehow or other we never get beyond
this stage, and as a consequence the yield from our fisheries is simply
pitiable. A widespread use of fish and an adequate fish supply would
give employment to hundreds and to thousands. As I have pointed out in
the chapter relating to this subject, the want of enterprise shown in
starting our deep-sea fisheries is an inexplicable anomaly. If the
Australian people had sprung from an inland race, this would not,
perhaps, have been so difficult to understand. But coming, as we do,
from a stock the most maritime the world has ever seen, such a defect
is not to our credit as inheritors of the old traditions.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 4219
Author: Muskett, Philip E.
Release Date: Jul 1, 2003
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/4219_14de7c75-6af3-4bab-bf15-18e4c22375ae.jpg?v=1671277591
on-the-economy-of-machinery-and-manufactures-gb-4238
On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures

On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures

The object of the present volume is to point out the effects
and the advantages which arise from the use of tools and
machines;to endeavour to classify their modes of action;and to
trace both the causes and the consequences of applying machinery
to supersede the skill and power of the human arm.
A view of the mechanical part of the subject will, in the
first instance, occupy our attention, and to this the first
section of the work will be devoted. The eleventh chapter
contains numerous subdivisions, and is important from the
extensive classification it affords of the arts in which copying
is so largely employed. The twelfth chapter, which completes the
first section, contains a few suggestions for the assistance of
those who propose visiting manufactories.
The second section, after an introductory chapter on the
difference between making and manufacturing, will contain, in the
succeeding chapters, a discussion of many of the questions which
relate to the political economy of the subject.
