It was his intention to follow the natural
and artificial connecting watercourses of the
continent in the most direct line southward to the gulf
coast of Florida, making portages as seldom as
possible, to show how few were the interruptions to
a continuous water-way for vessels of light draught,
from the chilly, foggy, and rocky regions of the Gulf
of St. Lawrence in the north, to the semi-tropical
waters of the great Southern Sea, the waves of which
beat upon the sandy shores of the southernmost
United States. Having proceeded about four
hundred miles upon his voyage, the author reached
Troy, on the Hudson River, New York state, where
for several years E. Waters & Sons had been
perfecting the construction of paper boats.
The advantages in using a boat of only fifty-eight
pounds weight, the strength and durability of which
had been well and satisfactorily tested, could not
be questioned, and the author dismissed his
assistant, and "paddled his own canoe" about two
thousand miles to the end of the journey. Though
frequently lost in the labyrinth of creeks and marshes
which skirt the southern coast of his country, the
author's difficulties were greatly lessened by the use
of the valuable and elaborate charts of the United
States Coast Survey Bureau, to the faithful
executers of which he desires to give unqualified and
grateful praise.
To an unknown wanderer among the creeks, rivers,
and sounds of the coast, the courteous treatment of
the Southern people was most gratifying. The
author can only add to this expression an extract
from his reply to the address of the Mayor of St.
Mary's, Georgia, which city honored him with an
ovation and presentation of flags after the
completion of his voyage:
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1082
Author: Bishop, Nathaniel H. I have not allowed the division among the
States and the breaking out of civil war to interfere with my
intention; but I should not purposely have chosen this period either
for my book or for my visit. I say so much, in order that it may not
be supposed that it is my special purpose to write an account of the
struggle as far as it has yet been carried. My wish is to describe as
well as I can the present social and political state of the country.
This I should have attempted, with more personal satisfaction in the
work, had there been no disruption between the North and South; but I
have not allowed that disruption to deter me from an object which, if
it were delayed, might probably never be carried out. It was presumed when Washington was founded that these three
advantages would be secured by the selected position. As regards the
first, the Potomac affords to the city but few of the advantages of a
sea-port. Ships can come up, but not ships of large burthen. The
river seems to have dwindled since the site was chosen; and at
present it is, I think, evident that Washington can never be great in
its shipping. Statio benefida carinis can never be its motto. As
regards the second point, singularly enough Washington is the only
city of the Union that has been in an enemy's possession since the
United States became a nation. In the war of 1812 it fell into our
hands, and we burnt it. As regards the third point, Washington, from
the lie of the land, can hardly have been said to be centrical at any
time. Owing to the irregularities of the coast it is not easy of
access by railways from different sides. Baltimore would have been
far better. But as far as we can now see, and as well as we can now
judge, Washington will soon be on the borders of the nation to which
it belongs, instead of at its centre. I fear, therefore, that we must
acknowledge that the site chosen for his country's capital by George
Washington has not been fortunate.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1866
Author: Trollope, Anthony
Release Date: Aug 1, 1999
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1866_e03cdf90-1ac6-4d85-a2d7-bd71dcd7d985.jpg?v=1671251853
a-woman-s-way-through-unknown-labrador-gb-4266
A Woman's Way Through Unknown Labrador

A Woman's Way Through Unknown Labrador

This book is the result of a determination on my part to complete
Mr. Hubbard's unfinished work, and having done this to set before
the public a plain statement, not only of my own journey, but of
his as well. I had traversed the old country until satisfied, if not satiated; and I had sailed many a weary thousand miles from west to east, and from north to south, until people, manners, and customs were looked upon by me with indifference.
The press was constantly pouring out works upon the new world, so contradictory to each other, and pronounced so unjust by the Americans, that my curiosity was excited. It appeared strange to me that travellers whose works showed evident marks of talent should view the same people through such very different mediums; and that their gleanings should, generally speaking, be of such meagre materials. Was there so little to be remarked about America, its government, its institutions, and the effect which these had upon the people, that the pages of so many writers upon that country should be filled up with how the Americans dined or drank wine, and what description of spoons and forks were used at table? Either the Americans remained purely and unchangedly English, as when they left their father-land; or the question required more investigation and deeper research than travellers in their hasty movements have been able to bestow upon it. Whether I should be capable of throwing any new light upon the subject, I knew not, but at all events I made up my mind that I would visit the country and judge for myself.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 23137
Author: Marryat, Frederick
Release Date: Oct 21, 2007
Format: eBook
Language: English

Diary in America, Series Two

I believe that the remarks of a traveller in any country not his own, let his work be ever so trifling or badly written, will point out some peculiarity which will have escaped the notice of those who were born and reside in that country, unless they happen to be natives of that portion of it in which the circumstance alluded to was observed. It is a fact that no one knows his own country; from assuetude and, perhaps, from the feelings of regard which we naturally have for our native land, we pass over what nevertheless does not escape the eye of a foreigner. Indeed, from the consciousness that we can always see such and such objects of interest whenever we please, we very often procrastinate until we never see them at all. I knew an old gentleman who having always resided in London, every year declared his intention of seeing the Tower of London with its Curiosities. It was his intention to follow the natural
and artificial connecting watercourses of the continent
in the most direct line southward to the gulf
coast of Florida, making portages as seldom as
possible, to show how few were the interruptions to
a continuous water-way for vessels of light draught,
from the chilly, foggy, and rocky regions of the Gulf
of St. Lawrence in the north, to the semi-tropical
waters of the great Southern Sea, the waves of which
beat upon the sandy shores of the southernmost
United States. Having proceeded about four hundred
miles upon his voyage, the author reached
Troy, on the Hudson River, New York state, where
for several years E. Though
frequently lost in the labyrinth of creeks and marshes
which skirt the southern coast of his country, the
author's difficulties were greatly lessened by the use
of the valuable and elaborate charts of the United
States Coast Survey Bureau, to the faithful executers
of which he desires to give unqualified and
grateful praise.
To an unknown wanderer among the creeks, rivers,
and sounds of the coast, the courteous treatment of
the Southern people was most gratifying. In search of unknown trails, he bought his first mountain bike in 1985. By 2000 he formed a MTB riding group for the Toronto Bicycling Network and lead rides for over ten years. Those trail rides took him to new places and eventually led him to share his knowledge with the cycling community on ontariobiketrails.com, a website he both produces and manages. Dan's curiosity for finding new trails, combined with a love of cycling, map-making, photography, and a background as a multimedia artist, helps bring it all together-and keeps him busy. He also produces a sister site, for winter Nordic ski and snowshoe trails called ontarioskitrails.com. Based near the Beaches on the east side of Toronto, Dan can always find a reason to get out, leave town, and find a trail to enjoy.

This title is not returnable
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/files/img_562021b6-8839-4809-899b-81aefd057617.jpg?v=1759999879
moon-newfoundland-labrador-wildlife-watching-iceberg-excursions-viking-settlements-9798886471229
Moon Newfoundland & Labrador: Wildlife-Watching, Iceberg Excursions, Viking Settlements
Awe-inspiring icebergs, clifftop lighthouses, and rare fossils: experience the magic of Canada's easternmost province with Moon Newfoundland & Labrador.

Flexible itineraries for weekend getaways or spending 7 days in Newfoundland and Labrador

Top experiences: Visit an active archaeological dig or learn about the history and local art of the province. Many are internationally well known and attract visitors from around the globe. Others no less important remain hidden in plain sight.
During the last 3 billion years Ontario has been witness to giant tectonic collisions as North America collided in turn with South America and Africa creating huge mountains now long gone. Many of Ontario's northern rocks originated as magma on ancient ocean floors long before life flourished. The province has been dented by fiery meteorites, drifted across the equator, been flooded by tropical seas rich in marine life and scraped bare by ice sheets.

Ontario's rich geologic history is illustrated here by short descriptions of more than 200 field sites ranging from Timmins in the north to Windsor in the south. These include the Sleeping Giant near Thunder Bay; Agawa Canyon; the Sudbury meteorite crater; Niagara Escarpment; the Falls and Gorge; numerous caves, the mineral-rich Bancroft area; and the high lakeshore cliffs at Scarborough Bluffs. Some sites are sacred to First Nations and are associated with spectacular rock art.

Also included are sites from adjacent parts of Quebec such as the Monteregian Hills near Montreal, the Gatineau Hills at Ottawa and a few sites in New York State, all of which add to the story of the geological evolution of Ontario and all of which are all within easy driving distance from Ontario.
