These two asked Mr. Titmarsh to join company with them,
and the conversation naturally fell upon the tour Mr. James was about to
take. The Peninsular and Oriental Company had arranged an excursion in the
Mediterranean, by which, in the space of a couple of months, as many men
and cities were to be seen as Ulysses surveyed and noted in ten years.
Malta, Athens, Smyrna, Constantinople, Jerusalem, Cairo were to be
visited, and everybody was to be back in London by Lord Mayor's Day.

      The idea of beholding these famous places inflamed Mr. Titmarsh's mind;
and the charms of such a journey were eloquently impressed upon him by Mr.
James. "Come," said that kind and hospitable gentleman, "and make one of
my family party; in all your life you will never probably have a chance
again to see so much in so short a time. Considerit is as easy as a
      journey to Paris or to Baden." Mr. Titmarsh considered all these things;
but also the difficulties of the situation: he had but six-and-thirty
hours to get ready for so portentous a journeyhe had engagements at
home finally, could he afford it? In spite of these objections,
however, with every glass of claret the enthusiasm somehow rose, and the
      difficulties vanished.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1863
Author: Thackeray, William Makepeace
Release Date: Aug 1, 1999
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1863_2861b78d-2816-47ad-9e86-490d5c6ec9a6.jpg?v=1671251836
penelope-s-postscripts-gb-1868
Penelope's Postscripts

Penelope's Postscripts

Salemina and I were in
Geneva. Some of these have
never been brought to light since their publication more than three hundred
years ago, or been mentioned by the few writers who have interested
themselves in the literature of this subject. In the collections of voyages
and explorations, so often garnered, these have found no place. Most of
them are very rare, and have never been reprinted. Yet they do not deserve
to be thus overlooked, and in several ways this survey of them will, I
think, be useful for students of literature.
They reveal a widespread custom among Elizabethan and Jacobean
gentlemen, of completing their education by travel. There are scattered
allusions to this practice, in contemporary social documents: Anthony
Wood frequently explains how such an Oxonian "travelled beyond
seas and returned a compleat Person,"--but nowhere is this ideal of a
cosmopolitan education so explicitly set forth as it is in these essays.
Addressed to the intending tourist, they are in no sense to be confused
with guide-books or itineraries. They are
discussions of the benefits of travel, admonitions and warnings, arranged
to put the traveller in the proper attitude of mind towards his great task
of self-development. Taken in chronological order they outline for us the
life of the travelling student.
Beginning with the end of the sixteenth century when travel became the
fashion, as the only means of acquiring modern languages and modern
history, as well as those physical accomplishments and social graces by
which a young man won his way at Court, they trace his evolution up to the
time when it had no longer any serious motive; that is, when the chairs of
modern history and modern languages were founded at the English
universities, and when, with the fall of the Stuarts, the Court ceased to
be the arbiter of men's fortunes. In the course of this evolution they show
us many phases of continental influence in England; how Italian immorality
infected young imaginations, how the Jesuits won travellers to their
religion, how France became the model of deportment, what were the origins
of the Grand Tour, and so forth.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 13403
Author: Howard, Clare
Release Date: Sep 9, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

Aunt Jo's Scrap Bag, Volume 2\r - Shawl-Straps

There is a sort of fate about writing books of travel which it is
impossible to escape. Afterwards, the
boat Water Witch laboured up French rivers, and
through a hundred tedious locks on the Ble
canal. But these and other voyages of three or
five men in an open boat were necessarily very
limited. In the wildest parts of the best rivers
the channel is too narrow for oars, or, if wide, it[2]
is too shallow for a row-boat; and the tortuous
passages, the rocks and banks, the weeds and
snags, the milldams, barriers, fallen trees, rapids,
whirlpools, and waterfalls that constantly occur
on a river winding among hills, make those very
parts where the scenery is wildest and best to be
quite unapproachable in an open boat, for it would
be swamped by the sharp waves, or upset over
the sunken rocks which it is utterly impossible
for a steersman to see.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 40238
Author: MacGregor, John
Release Date: Jul 15, 2012
Format: eBook
Language: English

First Impressions on a Tour upon the Continent\r - In the summer of 1818 through parts of France, Italy, Switzerland, the borders of Germany, and a part of French Flanders

In perusing the following pages, it will I hope be believed, that they
were not originally written with any view to publication: circumstances
have since occurred, which induce me to alter my first intention, and to
submit them to a more enlarged circle, than that of a few intimate
friends, to whose eye alone I had once thought of presenting them.
In committing my First Impressions to so fearful an ordeal as the
opinion of the Public, I feel oppressed by a sense of their various
imperfections, and by the conviction of their trifling value as a work
[vi]of the sort; yet I still flatter myself they will be received with
forbearance. I had much amusement in attempting this little sketch, and
I most sincerely entreat that it may be considered as what it is, a
sketch only. My friends will not, and readers in general must not, look
for fine writing from the pen of such a novice as myself; nor ought they
to expect me (labouring under the twofold disadvantage of sex and
inexperience) to narrate with the accuracy and precision of a regular
tourist, the history (natural, moral, political, literary and
commercial) of all the places we visited: still less, that (in
compliment to the lovers of the gastronomic art) I should undertake to
give the bill of fare of every table d'hte or traiteur that we met
with in our progress.
Among the many fears which assail me, there is one that recurs to my
mind with more pertinacity than the rest: that I may be taxed with
[vii]having bestowed too warm and glowing a colouring upon some objects of
natural beauty and sublimity. Formerly, indeed, I believe I was in
danger of leaning towards romance in describing scenes which had
particularly impressed my imagination or interested my feelings, and of
attempting to imitate, with too rash and unadvised a pencil, the fervour
of a Mrs. Radcliffe, although to catch the peculiar charm and spirit of
her style I felt to be (for me) impossible. But notwithstanding that I
still remember with complacence the time when the vivid imagination of
very early youth procured me the enjoyment of a thousand bright and
lovely illusions, and cast a sort of fairy splendour over existence
which was certainly more bewitching than many realities that I have
since met with, I at present feel (as better becomes me) more inclined
to worship at the sober shrine of reason and judgment. This, it will be
easily conceived, was likely to render[viii] my Tour a more faithful picture,
than if it had been undertaken some years ago, and I can safely affirm,
that I commenced it with a determination to observe all things without
prejudice of any sort, not even that of nationality; for prejudice is
still the same irrational and unworthy feeling, in every shape and under
every name. I was much hurried at the time of writing this Journal; but
a greater degree of subsequent leisure has enabled me to add some few
notes which may, I hope, amuse and interest my readers. In these I
acknowledge with gratitude the occasional assistance of a partial
friend.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 40746
Author: Baillie, Marianne
Release Date: Sep 13, 2012
Format: eBook
Language: English

My Wonderful Visit

A steak-and-kidney pie, influenza,
and a cablegram. Its appearance is
that, which we have so often described;
better than Cologne, and worse than Mentz;
its size is about a third part of the latter
city. On descending to it, the first distinct
object is the spire of the great church, a
remarkable structure, the stones of which
are laid with open interstices, so that the
light appears through its tapering sides. Of
this sort of stone fillagree work there are
said to be other specimens in Germany.
The city was once strongly fortified, and
has endured some celebrated sieges. I have seen a little something
of life. I have been a newspaper man,
editor, magazine contributor, author and, before
these things, several odd kinds of clerk before I found
out what I could do.
Eleven years ago I wrote my first novel, which was
issued by a New York publisher and suppressed by him,
Heaven knows why. For, the same year they suppressed
my book because of its alleged immoral tendencies, they
published Zolas Fecundity and An Englishwomans
Love Letters. I fancy now, after eleven years of
wonder, that it was not so much the supposed immorality,
as the books straightforward, plain-spoken discussion
of American life in general. We were not used
then in America to calling a spade a spade, particularly
in books. We had great admiration for Tolstoi and
Flaubert and Balzac and de Maupassant at a distancesome
of usand it was quite an honor to have handsome
sets of these men on our shelves, but mostly we had
been schooled in the literature of Dickens, Thackeray,
George Eliot, Charles Lamb and that refined company of
English sentimental realists who told us something about
life, but not everything. No doubt all of these great
men knew how shabby a thing this world ishow full
of lies, make-believe, seeming and false pretense it4
all is, but they had agreed among themselves, or with
the public, or with sentiment generally, not to talk
about that too much. Books were always to be built
out of facts concerning our better natures. We
were always to be seen as we wish to be seen. There
were villains to be sureliars, dogs, thieves, scoundrelsbut
they were strange creatures, hiding away
in dark, unconventional places and scarcely seen save at
night and peradventure; whereas we, all clean, bright,
honest, well-meaning people, were living in nice homes,
going our way honestly and truthfully, going to church,
raising our children believing in a Father, a Son and a
Holy Ghost, and never doing anything wrong at any time
save as these miserable liars, dogs, thieves, et cetera,
might suddenly appear and make us. Our books largely
showed us as heroes. If anything happened to our
daughters it was not their fault but the fault of these
miserable villains. Most of us were without original
sin. The business of our books, our church, our laws,
our jails, was to keep us so.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 65765
Author: Dreiser, Theodore
Release Date: Jul 5, 2021
Format: eBook
Language: English

Contributors

Illustrator: Glackens, William J., 1870-1938

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - One of the most remarkable true-crime narratives of the twenty-first century - "The Art Thief, like its title character, has confidence, élan, and a great sense of timing."--The New Yorker

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, The New Yorker, Lit Hub

"Enthralling." --The Wall Street Journal

Stéphane Bréitwieser is the most prolific art thief of all time.

He pulled off more than 200 heists, often in crowded museums in broad daylight.

His girlfriend served as his accomplice.

His collection was worth an estimated $2 billion.

He never sold a piece, displaying his stolen art in his attic bedroom.

He felt like a king.

Until everything came to a shocking end.

In this spellbinding portrait of obsession and flawed genius, Michael Finkel gives us one of the most remarkable true-crime narratives of our times, a riveting story of art, theft, love, and an insatiable hunger to possess beauty at any cost.

Author: Michael Finkel
Publisher: Vintage
Published: 06/25/2024
Pages: 240
Binding Type: Paperback
Weight: 0.56lbs
Size: 7.90h x 5.10w x 0.90d
ISBN: 9781984898456

About the Author
MICHAEL FINKEL is the best-selling author of The Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit and True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa. You'll feel as though you've stepped out of time, out of Paris, and into another place entirely. In his debut memoir, Gallot, head curator of Père Lachaise and son of a grave stonemason, pulls back the curtains on his otherworldly workplace--a cemetery crammed with tourists in the high season and mourners year round, but also a natural paradise, where foxes roam, birds flit between trees, and wildflowers and moss encroach onto tombstones.

In elegant, engrossing chapters, Gallot reveals the secret world of Père Lachaise--its Napoleonic origins, its unusual graves and monuments--alongside touching stories from his working life in the cemetery. Born into a family of undertakers, Gallot was named curator of Père-Lachaise in his early-thirties, inheriting the complex job of managing over 100 acres of green space, overseeing 70,000 graves, and arranging burials and cremations, all while contending with millions of tourists--plus film crews, birdwatchers, ghost hunters, and the occasional nude performance artist. Gallot, who also lives on the cemetery grounds with his wife and young children, demystifies his unusual and often misunderstood profession, which in reality requires much more contact with living people than dead ones. In doing so, he provides insight into the history of graveyards and our evolving relationship with death.

Gallot also shares vivid descriptions of flora and fauna, which have reemerged in recent years thanks to a huge rewilding effort. Initially unsure about the idea, he embraced it as the cemetery alleys blossomed and birdsong proliferated. Then in April 2020, with the city in lockdown, Gallot took an early-morning stroll and crossed paths with a fox--in the middle of Paris! He snapped a picture and posted it, unwittingly setting off a media frenzy. Gallot's daily photographs of Père-Lachaise's flourishing animal and plant life have attracted followers from around the world, helping to change the public perception of cemeteries, which ultimately exist as places for the living.

A bestseller in France, lauded as "a superb book ... full of humor, empathy, and great sweetness" by the French literary press, The Secret Life of a Cemetery is a life-affirming read that will stand the test of time.

Author: Benoît Gallot
Publisher: Greystone Books
Published: 04/29/2025
Pages: 240
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 0.75lbs
Size: 7.60h x 5.20w x 0.90d
ISBN: 9781778401589

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 03/15/2025
Foreword 04/21/2025

About the Author

Benoît Gallot has been the curator of Père Lachaise Cemetery since 2018 and was born into a family of grave stonemasons. A New York Times-bestselling author, Rick produces a guidebook series, a public television series, and a public radio show, and he organizes small-group tours that take over 30,000 travelers to Europe annually. He does all of this with the help of more than 100 well-traveled staff members at Rick Steves' Europe in Edmonds, WA (near Seattle). Whether that's preparing a meal for your family and taking the time to enjoy it together around the table or taking an extra moment to set the table with fresh flowers, curating your own joy is worth your time. This cookbook offers plenty of ideas for adopting this particularly French habit in your own life.

French at Heart shows how to create simple, joyous family meals around your own table, in whatever place you call home. Recipes range from classics that will make you fall in love with France--things like Salade Niçoise, French Onion Soup, and Tarte Tatin--to more modern French favorites with surprising flavors, like Tataki-Style Beef Tenderloin and Duck Confit Tostadas.

They are simple recipes, what Taylor and Smith Franchini often cook for their family after a long day, and reflect their take on familiar French dishes. There is plenty of advice from the heart on how to serve a memorable cheese or charcuterie board, curate a French-inspired pantry, start your own kitchen garden, or get the most out of your local farmers' market.

Creating meaningful moments around meals and sharing them turns out to be quite contagious--and exactly why people love coming to see Taylor and Smith Franchini at their cooking school.

Author: Marjorie Taylor,Kendall Smith Franchini
Publisher: Abrams Books
Published: 04/08/2025
Pages: 288
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 2.98lbs
Size: 10.17h x 8.32w x 1.30d
ISBN: 9781419771972

About the Author
Marjorie Taylor and Kendall Smith Franchini are the mother-daughter duo and cofounders of the Cook's Atelier, a French cooking school, culinary boutique, and wine shop in Beaune, France. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. When not on the road, Rick is active in his church and with advocacy groups focused on economic and social justice, drug policy reform, and ending hunger. What's the ideal vacation for a professional traveler? For Rick, it's to play his piano, relax at his family cabin in the Cascade Mountains, and spend time with family and friends at home in Edmonds.
