Impelled by a
particular inclination to linguistic science, I had in early youth
occupied myself with several languages of Europe and Asia. The various
stores of Oriental and Western literature were in the first instance
the object of my eager study. At a later period I began to interest
myself in the reciprocal relations of the languages themselves; and
here it is not surprising if I, in applying the proverb 'nosce
teipsum,' directed my principal attention to the affinities and to the
origin of my own mother-tongue.

That the Hungarian language belongs to the stock called Altaic is well
known, but whether it is to be referred to the Finnish or the Tartaric
branch is a question that still awaits decision. This enquiry,
interesting [Footnote 1] to us Hungarians both in a scientific and
{viii} a national point of view, was the principal and the moving
cause of my journey to the East. I was desirous of ascertaining, by
the practical study of the living languages, the positive degree of
affinity which had at once struck me as existing between the Hungarian
and the Turco-Tartaric dialects when contemplating them by the feeble
light which theory supplied. I went first to Constantinople. Several
years' residence in Turkish houses, and frequent visits to Islamite
schools and libraries, soon transformed me into a Turk--nay, into an
Efendi. The progress of my linguistic researches impelled me further
towards the remote East; and when I proposed to carry out my views by
actually undertaking a journey to Central Asia, I found it advisable
to retain this character of Efendi, and to visit the East as an
Oriental.

[Footnote 1: The opinion consequently that we Hungarians go to Asia
to seek there those of our race who were left behind, is erroneous.
Such an object, the carrying out of which, both from ethnographical
as well as philological reasons, would be an impossibility, would
render a man amenable to the charge of gross ignorance. It would have
been objectionable, and highly imprudent, to
have entered the countries lying between India
and Europe, as I had voyaged on the Indus, an
accredited agent; and I was directed to appear
(which I myself had suggested) as a private
individual.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 58074
Author: Burnes, Alexander
Release Date: Oct 11, 2018
Format: eBook
Language: English

Travels Into Bokhara (Volume 2 of 3)\r - Being the Account of A Journey from India to Cabool, Tartary, and Persia; Also, Narrative of a Voyage on the Indus, From the Sea to Lahore, With Presents From the King of Great Britain; Performed Under the Orders of the Supreme Government of India, in the Years 1831, 1832, and 1833

ALSO, NARRATIVE OF
A VOYAGE ON THE INDUS,

FROM THE SEA TO LAHORE,

WITH PRESENTS FROM THE KING OF GREAT BRITAIN;

PERFORMED UNDER THE ORDERS OF THE SUPREME GOVERNMENT
OF INDIA, IN THE YEARS 1831, 1832, AND 1833.
At midday, on the 16th of August, we commenced
our march on the Oxus, which was
about twenty-seven miles distant. After journeying
for ten miles, we halted in the evening
at a small village, and set out at midnight
for the river, under a bright moon.
Sand hills.
For a
great part of the night our route led us among
vast fields of soft sand, formed into ridges which
exactly resembled, in colour and appearance,
those on the verge of the ocean. The belt of
these sand-hills, which lie between Bokhara and
the Oxus, varies in breadth from twelve to
fifteen miles. They were utterly destitute of
vegetation. There was a remarkable uniformity
in their formation; the whole of them preserved
the shape and form of a horse-shoe,
the outer rim presenting itself to the north,
the direction from which the winds of this
country blow. On this side the mounds sloped,[2]
while the interior of the figure was invariably
precipitous; but loose sand will ever take
its position from the prevailing winds. None
of the hills exceeded the height of fifteen or
twenty feet, and they all rested on a hard base.
The wind was high, and the particles of sand
moved from one mound to another, wheeling
in the eddy or interior of the semicircle, and
having now and then, particularly under the
rays of the sun, much the look of water; an
appearance, I imagine, which has given rise to
the opinion of moving sands in a desert. The
thermometer, which had risen to 100, fell at
night to 70 among the sand-hills; and I have
always observed that the vicissitudes of cold
and heat are greatest among sand. About an
hour after the sun had risen, we exchanged this
dreary route for verdant fields, irrigated by the
Oxus; and, after winding among them for about
four miles, encamped on the verge of the river,
where we hid ourselves from the suns rays
under the panniers of our camels.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 64247
Author: Burnes, Alexander
Release Date: Jan 9, 2021
Format: eBook
Language: English

Travels into Bokhara (Volume 3 of 3) - Being the Account of A Journey from India to Cabool, Tartary, and Persia; Also, Narrative of a Voyage on the Indus, From the Sea to Lahore, With Presents From the King of Great Britain; Performed Under the Orders of the Supreme Government of India, in the Years 1831, 1832, and 1833

I was employed as an officer of the Quartermaster-generals
department, for several years, in
the province of Cutch. In the course of enquiries
into its geography and history, I visited
the eastern mouth of the Indus, to which the
country adjoins, as well as that singular tract
called the Run, into which that river flows.
The extension of our knowledge in that quarter
served only to excite further curiosity, in which
I was stimulated by Lieut-General Sir Thomas
Bradford, then Commander-in-Chief of the Bombay
army. That officer directed his views, in a
most enlightened manner, to the acquisition of
every information regarding a frontier so important
to Britain as that of north-western India.
Encouraged by such approbation, for which I
am deeply grateful, I volunteered my services,[x]
in the year 1829, to traverse the deserts between
India and the Indus, and finally, endeavour to
descend that river to the sea. Such a journey
involved matters of political moment; but the
government of Bombay was then held by an individual
distinguished above all others, by zeal
in the cause of Asiatic geography and literature.
Sir John Malcolm despatched me at once, in
prosecution of the design, and was pleased to
remove me to the political branch of the service,
observing, that I should be then invested with
influence with the rulers, through whose
country I travelled, that would tend greatly
to allay that jealousy and alarm, which might
impede, if they did not arrest, the progress of
my enquiries.
In the year 1830, I entered the desert, accompanied
by Lieut. James Holland, of the
Quartermaster-generals department, an officer
ably qualified to assist me. After reaching
Jaysulmeer, we were overtaken by an express
from the Supreme Government of India, desiring
us to return, since at that time it was deemed[xi]
inexpedient to incur the hazard of exciting
the alarm and jealousy of the rulers of Sinde,
and other foreign states, by the prosecution of
the design. This disappointment, then most
acutely felt, was dissipated in the following year,
by the arrival of presents from the King of Great
Britain for the ruler of Lahore, coupled, at the
same time, with the desire that such an opportunity
for acquiring correct information of the
Indus should not be overlooked. The following
work contains the narrative of that mission,
which I conducted by the Indus to Lahore.
The information which I collected, relative to
Jaysulmeer and the countries on the N. But the days go on, and we are
getting accustomed to live in a state of war; war has
almost become a normal condition of existence. At
first we could do nothing but consider the facts of
the great quarrel of nations and the exploits of the
armies. War for the moment seemed to be our life,
our culture, and our religion. But things have
changed. War started by concentrating us and
making us narrow, but now it is giving us greater
breadth. We have become more interested in the
home life of our Allies, in the after-the-war prospects
of Europe, in the future of our own British
Empire and of the wide world generally. The war
has given us a larger consciousness, and we have
become, as some say, Continental. In any case,[x]
we are much less insular. France and Russia have
become real places to the man in the street, and the
account he gives of them is more credible. Even
our country labourer can say where Gallipoli is, Mesopotamia,
Egypt, Salonica, Bulgaria, Serbia, though,
indeed, I have frequently heard the latter spoken of
as Siberia. My sons gone to Siberia, says the
countryman; its a cold place. Our imagination
ranges farther afield, and young men of all classes
think of making far travels when the war is
over. We are not less interested in other things,
but more; only less interested in the old suffocating
business and industrial life of the time before
the war, of the stuffy rooms, the circumscribed
horizons, the dull grind. All eyes are opened wider,
all hearts have greater hopes, and that which dares in
us dares more. We are reading more, reading better,
and, among other matters, are thinking more of foreign
countries, empires, far-away climes. The war, bringing
so many nations together, has touched imaginations.
It has mixed our themes of conversations and enriched
our life with new colours, new ideas. So, perhaps,
the story of this journey and my impressions of an
interesting but remote portion of the Tsars Empire
will not come amiss just now. Moreover, during the
war many problems have become clearer, especially
those of the British Empire, clearer, but none the
less unsolved, and I feel that a study of a vast stretch[xi]
of the Russian Empire, and of its problems and its
prospective future, cannot but be helpful.
Among the letters sent me care of The Times there
is one written about an article which has become a
chapter in this book:
Since I was a child and steeped myself in the Arabian
Nights, I have never been so enthralled as I was by an
article of yours called Towards Turkestan, which appeared
in The Times long since, as it seems now (last May?). Slaght had a chance encounter with one of the most mysterious birds on Earth. Bigger than any owl he knew, it looked like a small bear with decorative feathers. He snapped a quick photo and shared it with experts. Soon he was on a five-year journey, searching for this enormous, enigmatic creature in the lush, remote forests of eastern Russia. That first sighting set his calling as a scientist.

Despite a wingspan of six feet and a height of over two feet, the Blakiston's fish owl is highly elusive. They are easiest to find in winter, when their tracks mark the snowy banks of the rivers where they feed. They are also endangered. And so, as Slaght and his devoted team set out to locate the owls, they aim to craft a conservation plan that helps ensure the species' survival. This quest sends them on all-night monitoring missions in freezing tents, mad dashes across thawing rivers, and free-climbs up rotting trees to check nests for precious eggs. They use cutting-edge tracking technology and improvise ingenious traps. And all along, they must keep watch against a run-in with a bear or an Amur tiger. At the heart of Slaght's story are the fish owls themselves: cunning hunters, devoted parents, singers of eerie duets, and survivors in a harsh and shrinking habitat.

Through this rare glimpse into the everyday life of a field scientist and conservationist, Owls of the Eastern Ice testifies to the determination and creativity essential to scientific advancement and serves as a powerful reminder of the beauty, strength, and vulnerability of the natural world.

Author: Jonathan C. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929).

After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books, The Pastures of Heaven (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933), and worked on short stories later collected in The Long Valley (1938). Popular success and financial security came only with Tortilla Flat (1935), stories about Monterey's paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class: In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937), and the book considered by many his finest, The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.

Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker with The Forgotten Village (1941) and a serious student of marine biology with Sea of Cortez (1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-novelette The Moon is Down (1942).Cannery Row (1945), The Wayward Bus (1948), another experimental drama, Burning Bright(1950), and The Log from the Sea of Cortez (1951) preceded publication of the monumental East of Eden (1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family's history.

The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. But by the final years of the Cold War, only a few hundred tigers stepped quietly through the snow of the Amur River basin. Soon, the Soviet Union fell, bringing catastrophe; without the careful oversight of a central authority, poaching and logging took a fast, astonishing toll on an already vulnerable species.

Just as these changes arrived, scientists came together to found the Siberian Tiger Project. Led by Dale Miquelle, a moose researcher, and Zhenya Smirnov, a mouse biologist, the team captured and released more than 114 tigers over three decades. They witnessed mating rituals and fights, hunting and feeding, the ceding and taking of territory, the creation of families.

Within these pages, characters--both feline and human--come fully alive as we travel with them through the quiet and changing forests of Amur. We travel across time, too, as the fate of the species has been shaped by the history and politics of empires--such as the Qing dynasty's Willow Palisade, which once slowed human settlement, or the later introduction of roads through Russian reserves. The Siberian Tiger Project became the longest-running tiger research initiative; its work continues to guide conservationists today. Jonathan C. In A Kingdom and a Village, acclaimed historian Simon Morrison offers a vividly rendered history of Russia's heart and soul, tracing its transformation from a "big village"--the demeaning nickname the St. Peterburg nobility gave to its provincial neighbor--into a spectacular metropolis of vast geopolitical import.

That arc is the stuff of dramatic, violent, stranger-than-fiction historical narrative: the last century alone has featured invasions and costly battles, the destruction (and reconstruction) of sacred cultural and religious landmarks, and the collapse of the Soviet republic--not to mention the rise of an authoritarian leader who is a keen student of Russian history. Morrison reaches back further still, to the founding of the place we now know as Moscow as a fortress on a river nearly a millennium ago. In the centuries that followed, any number of external forces--from Tatar Mongols and Swedes to Napoleon and Hitler--set their sights on Moscow, reinforcing its self-conception as both a glittering prize and a site of perpetual defense and resurrection.

Drawing on a rich array of archival materials, from the birchbark scrawls that record the oldest layer of Russian civilization to the articles in European newspapers heralding the opening of the magnificent Bolshoi Theater, Morrison brings to life the bloody power struggles; cultural marvels; excruciating famines, droughts, storms, and fires that have shaped and reshaped the city and reinforced its essential character.

With A Kingdom and a Village, Morrison makes a persuasive, even impassioned case that to understand Moscow is not only to unlock the spellbinding mysteries of Russia's past but also, critically, to grasp the grim logic of its present. Gigantic control panels, monumental telescopes, inexplicable machinery--the facilities he documents might be found in comic book and graphic novel fantasies or the science fiction of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. But why were these institutes built and what purposes do they serve today?
The Soviets promoted science as a utopian ideal to replace religion and rapidly modernize the country. "Big science" projects, primarily for Cold War military purposes, involved thousands of researchers working in complete secrecy. In the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many institutes were left destitute, their sophisticated technology condemned to extinction. But some scientists persevered, adapting to the new landscape. Today, defying the odds, they persist--even in wartime--to continue their work.
Lusito gained unique access to sites across former republics and satellites of the USSR--from a cosmic ray research center in the remote Armenian mountains, to one of the world's largest radars located in Ukraine, which locals believed to be a climate-altering weapon.
