They can examine for themselves
whether there has been anything in the public career of that
country since, at home or abroad, which suggests that those
influences and tendencies really did exist. It was his intention to follow the natural
and artificial connecting watercourses of the
continent in the most direct line southward to the gulf
coast of Florida, making portages as seldom as
possible, to show how few were the interruptions to
a continuous water-way for vessels of light draught,
from the chilly, foggy, and rocky regions of the Gulf
of St. Lawrence in the north, to the semi-tropical
waters of the great Southern Sea, the waves of which
beat upon the sandy shores of the southernmost
United States. I have not allowed the division among the
States and the breaking out of civil war to interfere with my
intention; but I should not purposely have chosen this period either
for my book or for my visit. It was presumed when Washington was founded that these three
advantages would be secured by the selected position. As regards the
first, the Potomac affords to the city but few of the advantages of a
sea-port. Ships can come up, but not ships of large burthen. The
river seems to have dwindled since the site was chosen; and at
present it is, I think, evident that Washington can never be great in
its shipping. Statio benefida carinis can never be its motto. As
regards the second point, singularly enough Washington is the only
city of the Union that has been in an enemy's possession since the
United States became a nation. In the war of 1812 it fell into our
hands, and we burnt it. As regards the third point, Washington, from
the lie of the land, can hardly have been said to be centrical at any
time. Owing to the irregularities of the coast it is not easy of
access by railways from different sides. Baltimore would have been
far better. But as far as we can now see, and as well as we can now
judge, Washington will soon be on the borders of the nation to which
it belongs, instead of at its centre. I fear, therefore, that we must
acknowledge that the site chosen for his country's capital by George
Washington has not been fortunate.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 1866
Author: Trollope, Anthony
Release Date: Aug 1, 1999
Format: eBook
Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0619/5648/9373/products/1866_e03cdf90-1ac6-4d85-a2d7-bd71dcd7d985.jpg?v=1671251853
letters-from-america-gb-6445
Letters from America

Letters from America

The author started in May 1913 on a journey to the United States, Canada,
and the South Seas, from which he returned next year at the beginning of
June. Deeply impressed with the conviction
that the advancement of these is intimately connected
with the progress of right views among professing Christians
in that country, it was my desire not only to inform
myself of the actual state of feeling and opinion among
this important class, but if possible, to contribute my mite
of encouragement and aid to those who are bearing the
burden and heat of the day, in an arduous contest, on
whose issue the alternative of a vast amount of human
happiness or misery depends. This general outline of my
motives included several specific, practical objects, which
will be found detailed in the ensuing pages.

For obvious reasons, the abolition of slavery in the
               United States is the most prominent topic in my narrative;
but I have freely interspersed observations on other
subjects of interest and importance, as they came under
consideration. Short notices are introduced of some of
the prominent abolitionists of America; and, though sensible
how imperfectly I have done justice to exertions,
which, either in degree or kind, have scarcely a parallel
in the annals of self-denying benevolence, I fear I shall
occasionally have hurt the feelings of the individuals

referred to, by what they may deem undeserved or
unseasonable praise; yet I trust they will pardon the act
for the sake of the motive, which is to introduce the
English anti-slavery reader to a better acquaintance with
his fellow laborers in the United States. My short stay,
and the limited extent of my visit, prevented my becoming
acquainted with many who are equally deserving of
            notice.

Less than twelve months have elapsed since I embarked
on this "visit;" and though, with the help of
steam by sea and land, an extensive journey may now be
performed in a comparatively short time, yet, during this
brief interval, my own engagements would have prevented
my placing the following narrative so early before the
public without assistance. It is right to state that a large
portion of the work has been prepared for the press from
a rough transcript of my journal, from my correspondence,
and other documents, by the friend who accompanied me
on a former journey to the West Indies, and who then
compiled the account of our joint labors.

......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 11454
Author: Sturge, Joseph
Release Date: Mar 1, 2004
Format: eBook
Language: English

Two Thousand Miles on an Automobile\r - Being a Desultory Narrative of a Trip Through New England, New York, Canada, and the West, By "Chauffeur"

Title: Two Thousand Miles on an Automobile
Subtitle: Being a Desultory Narrative of a Trip Through New England, New York, Canada, and the West, By "Chauffeur"
Author: Arthur Jerome Eddy
Release Date: May 1, 2004 [EBook #12380]
Language: English

You provide, in accordance with paragraph 1.F.3, a full refund of
any money paid for a work or a replacement copy, if a defect in the
electronic work is discovered and reported to you within 90 days of
        receipt of the work.

1.F.3. I
don't want to apologize to her. Far be it from me. But I do want to
explain. Unfortunately, I do not know her name, much less her present
address. If her eyes should chance upon these lines, I hope she will write
to me.
It was in Reno, Nevada, in the summer of 1892. Also, it was fair-time, and
the town was filled with petty crooks and tin-horns, to say nothing of a
vast and hungry horde of hoboes. It was the hungry hoboes that made the
town a "hungry" town. They "battered" the back doors of the homes of the
citizens until the back doors became unresponsive.
A hard town for "scoffings," was what the hoboes called it at that time. I
know that I missed many a meal, in spite of the fact that I could "throw
my feet" with the next one when it came to "slamming a gate" for a
"poke-out" or a "set-down," or hitting for a "light piece" on the street.
Why, I was so hard put in that town, one day, that I gave the porter the
slip and invaded the private car of some itinerant millionnaire. The train
started as I made the platform, and I headed for the aforesaid
millionnaire with the porter one jump behind and reaching for me. It was a
dead heat, for I reached the millionnaire at the same instant that the
porter reached me. I had no time for formalities. "Gimme a quarter to eat
on," I blurted out. And as I live, that millionnaire dipped into his
pocket and gave me ... just ... precisely ... a quarter. It is my
conviction that he was so flabbergasted that he obeyed automatically, and
it has been a matter of keen regret ever since, on my part, that I didn't
ask him for a dollar. I know that I'd have got it. I swung off the
platform of that private car with the porter manoeuvring to kick me in the
face. He missed me. One is at a terrible disadvantage when trying to swing
off the lowest step of a car and not break his neck on the right of way,
with, at the same time, an irate Ethiopian on the platform above trying
to land him in the face with a number eleven. But soon a sentiment of great
admiration for the gallantry and determination of the Southerners,
together with the unhappy contrast afforded by the foolish bullying
conduct of the Northerners, caused a complete revulsion in my
feelings, and I was unable to repress a strong wish to go to
America and see something of this wonderful struggle.vi
Having successfully accomplished my design, I returned to
England, and found amongst all my friends an extreme desire to know
the truth of what was going on in the South; for, in consequence of
the blockade, the truth can with difficulty be arrived at, as
intelligence coming mainly through Northern sources is not
believed; and, in fact, nowhere is the ignorance of what is passing
in the South more profound than it is in the Northern States.
In consequence of a desire often expressed, I now publish the
Diary which I endeavoured, as well as I could, to keep up day by
day during my travels throughout the Confederate States. I had traversed the old country until satisfied, if not satiated; and I had sailed many a weary thousand miles from west to east, and from north to south, until people, manners, and customs were looked upon by me with indifference.
The press was constantly pouring out works upon the new world, so contradictory to each other, and pronounced so unjust by the Americans, that my curiosity was excited. It appeared strange to me that travellers whose works showed evident marks of talent should view the same people through such very different mediums; and that their gleanings should, generally speaking, be of such meagre materials. Was there so little to be remarked about America, its government, its institutions, and the effect which these had upon the people, that the pages of so many writers upon that country should be filled up with how the Americans dined or drank wine, and what description of spoons and forks were used at table? Either the Americans remained purely and unchangedly English, as when they left their father-land; or the question required more investigation and deeper research than travellers in their hasty movements have been able to bestow upon it. It is a fact that no one knows his own country; from assuetude and, perhaps, from the feelings of regard which we naturally have for our native land, we pass over what nevertheless does not escape the eye of a foreigner. Indeed, from the consciousness that we can always see such and such objects of interest whenever we please, we very often procrastinate until we never see them at all. I knew an old gentleman who having always resided in London, every year declared his intention of seeing the Tower of London with its Curiosities. At least a man must make a double effort of moral humility and
imaginative energy to prevent it from narrowing his mind. Indeed there
is something touching and even tragic about the thought of the
thoughtless tourist, who might have stayed at home loving Laplanders,
embracing Chinamen, and clasping Patagonians to his heart in Hampstead
or Surbiton, but for his blind and suicidal impulse to go and see what
they looked like. This is not meant for nonsense; still less is it meant
for the silliest sort of nonsense, which is cynicism. The human bond
that he feels at home is not an illusion. On the contrary, it is rather
an inner reality. Man is inside all men. In a real sense any man may be
inside any men. But to travel is to leave the inside and draw
dangerously near the outside. So long as he thought of men in the
abstract, like naked toiling figures in some classic frieze, merely as
those who labour and love their children and die, he was thinking the
fundamental truth about them. By going to look at their unfamiliar
manners and customs he is inviting them to disguise themselves in
fantastic masks and costumes. Many modern internationalists talk as if
men of different nationalities had only to meet and mix and understand
each other. In reality that is the moment of supreme dangerthe moment
when[Pg 2] they meet. We might shiver, as at the old euphemism by which a
meeting meant a duel.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 27250
Author: Chesterton, G. It was his intention to follow the natural
and artificial connecting watercourses of the continent
in the most direct line southward to the gulf
coast of Florida, making portages as seldom as
possible, to show how few were the interruptions to
a continuous water-way for vessels of light draught,
from the chilly, foggy, and rocky regions of the Gulf
of St. Lawrence in the north, to the semi-tropical
waters of the great Southern Sea, the waves of which
beat upon the sandy shores of the southernmost
United States. As I was stepping on
board, Judge P. said he hoped we were each provided with
a life-preserver. I concluded he was in joke; but he declared
himself perfectly serious, adding that we should
probably find ourselves the only cabin passengers unprovided
with this means of safety. We should have been informed
of this before; it was too late now. Mr. E., of our party on
board, told me all that this inquiry made me anxious to know.
He had been accustomed to ascend and descend the river
annually with his family, and he made his arrangements according
to his knowledge of the danger of the navigation.
It was his custom to sit up till near the time of other people's
[Pg 6]
rising, and to sleep in the day. There are always companies
of gamblers in these boats, who, being awake and
dressed during the hours of darkness, are able to seize the
boats on the first alarm of an accident in the night, and are
apt to leave the rest of the passengers behind. Mr. E. was
a friend of the captain; he was a man of gigantic bodily
strength and cool temper, every way fitted to be of use in an
emergency; and the captain gave him the charge of the
boats in case of a night accident. Mr. E. told me that, as
we were particularly under his charge, his first thought in
a time of danger would be of us. He had a life-preserver,
and was an excellent swimmer, so that he had little doubt of
being able to save us in any case. He only asked us to
come the instant we were called, to do as we were bid, and
to be quiet. As we looked at the stately vessel, with her
active captain, her two pilots, the crowds of gay passengers,
and all the provision for safety and comfort, it was scarcely
possible to realize the idea of danger; but we knew that the
perils of this extraordinary river, sudden and overwhelming,
are not like those of the ocean, which can be, in a great
measure, guarded against by skill and care. The utmost
watchfulness cannot here provide against danger from squalls,
from changes in the channel of the river, and from the snags,
planters, and sawyers (trunks of trees brought down from
above by the current, and fixed in the mud under water)
which may at any moment pierce the hull of the vessel.
......Buy Now (To Read More)

Product details

Ebook Number: 40281
Author: Martineau, Harriet
Release Date: Jul 19, 2012
Format: eBook
Language: English

Travels Through North America, During the Years 1825 and 1826. v. 1-2

This text uses UTF-8 (Unicode)
file encoding. One of the
most vivid little episodes of the trip, that
came after two months of walking, I would
like to tell at this point. It was in southern
Colorado. It was early morning. Around
the cliff, with a boom, a rattle and a bang,
appeared a gypsy wagon. On the front seat
was a Romany, himself dressed inconspicuously,
[10]
but with his woman more bedecked
than Carmen. She wore the bangles and
spangles of her Hindu progenitors. The
woman began to shout at me, I could not
distinguish just what. The two seemed to
think this was the gayest morning the sun
ever shone upon. They came faster and
faster, then, suddenly, at the woman's suggestion,
pulled up short. And she asked me
with a fraternal, confidential air, "What you
sellin', what you sellin', boy?"
If we had met on the first of June, when
I had just started, she would have pretended
to know all about me, she would have asked
to tell my fortune. On the first of June I
wore about the same costume I wear on the
streets of Springfield. I was white as paper
from two years of writing poetry indoors.
Now, on the first of August I was sunburned
a quarter of an inch deep. Not long after, he was dead. Into the Wild is the mesmerizing, heartbreaking tale of an enigmatic young man who goes missing in the wild and whose story captured the world's attention.

Immediately after graduating from college in 1991, McCandless had roamed through the West and Southwest on a vision quest like those made by his heroes Jack London and John Muir. In the Mojave Desert he abandoned his car, stripped it of its license plates, and burned all of his cash. He would give himself a new name, Alexander Supertramp, and, unencumbered by money and belongings, he would be free to wallow in the raw, unfiltered experiences that nature presented. Craving a blank spot on the map, McCandless simply threw the maps away. Leaving behind his desperate parents and sister, he vanished into the wild.

Jon Krakauer constructs a clarifying prism through which he reassembles the disquieting facts of McCandless's short life. Admitting an interest that borders on obsession, he searches for the clues to the drives and desires that propelled McCandless.

When McCandless's innocent mistakes turn out to be irreversible and fatal, he becomes the stuff of tabloid headlines and is dismissed for his naiveté, pretensions, and hubris. He is said to have had a death wish but wanting to die is a very different thing from being compelled to look over the edge. Krakauer brings McCandless's uncompromising pilgrimage out of the shadows, and the peril, adversity, and renunciation sought by this enigmatic young man are illuminated with a rare understanding--and not an ounce of sentimentality. Into the Wild is a tour de force. The one constant in her life--the place Bridget felt whole and fully herself--was the river. When she discovered the world of whitewater rafting, she knew she'd found her calling.

On the river, Bridget learned to read the natural world around her and came to know the language of rivers. One of the few female guides on the Snake River, she then traveled to the Zambezi River in Africa, some of the most dangerous whitewater in the world, where she faced death and learned to conquer her fears--both on the water and off. The river taught her how to overcome years of betrayals and abuse, to trust herself, and, finally, how to help heal her family from generational cycles of trauma and poverty.

A beautifully rendered memoir of a woman coming into her own, The River's Daughter opens us to the possibilities of transformation through nature.

Author: Bridget Crocker
Publisher: Spiegel & Grau
Published: 06/03/2025
Pages: 320
Binding Type: Hardcover
Weight: 1.15lbs
Size: 9.40h x 6.10w x 1.40d
ISBN: 9781954118546

Review Citation(s):
Kirkus Reviews 04/01/2025
Publishers Weekly 04/28/2025
Booklist 05/01/2025 pg. 17

About the Author
Bridget Crocker is a trailblazer in women's empowerment within the outdoor industry.
