Hinter yin und yang steht das qi, genauer gesagt das yin-qi und yang-qi, das vielen hierzulande als Inbegriff gespurter Lebenskraft oder fliessender Lebensenergie vertraut sein durfte. Die Idee selbst stammt aus dem ersten Jahrtausend v. Chr.: yin steht im damaligen Denken fur Schatten, Dunkelheit, Regenwolken, die Nordseite des Berges und yang fur das Gegenteil: Licht, Helligkeit, Sonnenstrahl, die Sudseite des Berges. Den Menschen der fruhen Dynastien war bereits bewusst, dass yin und yang aufeinander angewiesen sind, eines das andere bedingt und hervorbringt. In der Folgezeit lagerten sich weitere Polaritaten an das Begriffspaar an, wie Ruhe (yin) und Bewegung (yang), das Weiche (yin) und das Harte (yang), das Feuchte (yin) und das Trockene (yang), das Schwere (yin) und das Leichte (yang), die Dichte und Fulle (yin), das Zerstreute und die Leere (yang) usw. - bis schliesslich die ganze Welt, einschliesslich des Menschen, zweiwertig nach yin und yang geordnet war. Die polare Zusammengehorigkeit macht das yin und yang-Emblem zum Symbol fur die Suche nach Ganzheit, der das chinesische Denken trotz einiger Irrungen treu geblieben ist - bis heute, zumindest in der Traditionellen Chinesischen Medizin (TCM), in der Kampfkunst, im Qigong oder im Schattenboxen. Gudula Linck macht das vielgestaltige Verhaltnis von yin und yang in Philosophie, Religion und Sozialgeschichte Chinas an zahlreichen Beispielen deutlich.
