Jupiter, le souverain des Dieux, doit paratre le premier; on le reconnat facilement ce caractre donn de grandeur et de majest, sa chevelure touffue, sa barbe paisse et profonde, et au foudre dont il reste un fragment dans sa main droite. Tout le nu du bras gauche est une restauration moderne. L'artiste, par imitation de quelques statues antiques, n'a mis dans la main du Dieu qu'une portion du sceptre. Le sceptre est donn avec raison Jupiter, comme l'un de ses principaux attributs. Quelques fois ce n'est qu'un long bton (hasta) marque d'honneur des premiers rois: souvent il est surmont d'un aigle, d'un petit globe ou d'un fleuron. Ovide peint Jupiter appuy sur un sceptre d'ivoire (Mt. I. 180.). Les Pythagoriciens croyaient ce sceptre, de bois de cyprs, arbre consacr la mort qui sert de passage l'immortalit.
