Die Liebschaften junger Scholarensemester in Frankreich und in der Schweiz, einst die Quelle von friedlich lebenden Kameraden bewundernd gehrter Abenteuer, kamen ihm wie in slichrosa gebundene Dumasprosa vor. Die Debatten in Weinstuben und Klublokalen hallten ein leeres Echo. Halb von Begeisterungszunder verkohlte Taten ragten als verkrppelte Wegweiser auf durchschrittenem Pfad. So hatte er nichts, was ihm wert genug schien, da er es fortsetzte. Kurz entschlossen verkaufte er seine schne Bibliothek, zu der er oft des Nachts in der Qual seiner Gedanken geflohen war, und trat in ein Bankgeschft ein.
