Uno de los nombres ms admiradosy temidosde nuestra literatura contempornea ha sido el de Leopoldo Alas, que hizo famoso el seudnimo de Clarn. Fu profesor de Derecho, escribi tratados de Filosofa del Derecho, artculos de crtica, cuentos, novelas, y en todo cuanto hizo, en sus escritos, en sus clases, en sus conversaciones, dej la huella de un alto espritu de sinceridad moral, de un ingenio agudsimo, de una honda sensibilidad, de un dominio absoluto del arte literario. Naci en 1852 en Zamora, siendo su padre gobernador civil de aquella provincia. La familia, asturiana de origen, regres pronto a la tierra cantbrica, cuando Clarn contaba an pocos meses de edad. En Asturias se cri Clarn; all estudi y termin la carrera de Derecho. Aficionado a la literatura desde nio, pas a Madrid a estudiar Filosofa y Letras, por los aos del reinado de D. Amadeo. En la corte, no slo se entreg a sus estudios, sino que se dedic tambin al cultivo de la crtica en los peridicos satricos ms conocidos entonces.
