Grecia foi o nome dado pelos Romanos ao paiz chamado Hllada pelos seus naturaes. Tal nome coube primeiramente a uma pequena diviso do Epiro; depois applicou-se Thessalia, aos paizes ao sul das Thermopylas e ao Peloponeso, vindo, com o andar do tempo, a comprehender todo o Epiro, a Illyria na sua maior parte e a Macedonia. Mas o vocabulo no era conhecido pelos habitantes do paiz, do mesmo modo que estes se no designavam pelo nome de Gregos, com que ficaram memorados na Historia. Na lingua grega a Grecia era chamada Hllada, como dissemos, Hellenia ou paiz dos Hellenos. So ignorados os motivos pelos quaes prevaleceram os nomesGrecia e Gregosempregados na lingua romana. A palavra Hllada (em grego Hellas) designou primitivamente um pequeno districto da Phthiotida, na Thessalia. D'ahi, os Hellenos espalharam-se gradualmente por todo o resto da Grecia,mas ainda no tempo de Homero o seu nome no era commum a toda a nao grega. O grande poeta designa os Gregos pelos nomes de Danaos, Acheus, ou Argivos; e imbora na Iliada, cant.
