Uno de sus m s ac rrimos defensores fue el escritor William Makepeace Thackeray, al cual muchos atribuyeron la obra, pues la autora permaneci en el anonimato hasta un tiempo despu s de su publicaci n. Como agradecimiento, Charlotte le dedic la segunda edici n de su novela. Puede llegar a ser una autobiograf a, ya que la autora ten a un amor secreto con un profesor belga llamado Constantin Heger.1 La novela es considerada una de las primeras novelas feministas.
